The Body of Christ
Ephesians 4:11-16
As we saw yesterday, all the people who gather to worship in churches
around the world form one body—the body of Christ. Jesus is the head. Paul
described Him as "the beginning, the first-born from the dead" (Col. 1:18).
He takes priority in the church and in the lives of every believer.
At salvation, you become a part of the body, no matter what your local
church's membership rules may be. By receiving the Savior, a person is made
one with Jesus. Therefore, if you're a believer, you are a breathing and
active part of Christ, who is at work on earth through His followers. The
church is Jesus' feet to carry the gospel message, His arms to care for
those in need of love, and His hands to uphold the weak.
Christ's physical body underwent terrible pain and persecution. His church
body cannot expect a cozy, easy existence either. Being Jesus to the world
means making sacrifices, accepting ridicule, and loving our enemies (Heb.
13:16, Matt. 5:44). God called us to spread the gospel, but that doesn't
mean people always like what we have to say. Sin and accountability aren't
popular messages. Yet being trendy and well liked is not the point. We're
here to carry out the work and mission of God, even when doing so is
uncomfortable.
The spiritual makeup of the church is linked to its mission. The gospel
cannot be spread except through the strength and wisdom of Jesus Christ,
the head. The body of believers is united with Him through the indwelling
presence of His Holy Spirit. He reaches the world through His church and
its members.

* Love Your Enemies*
*MATTHEW 5:44 NKJ
44 "But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse
you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who
spitefully use you and persecute you,*
*"Love your enemies? What kind of advice is that? How can you
have enemies, if you act in love toward them?"*
*Good point.*
*Why would anyone want to have enemies? Do you?*
*God's instructions, if acted upon, will make friends out of
enemies. Think how much better the world would be then.*
*God can, and does, love His enemies. He proved it. No matter
what they did to Jesus, He never quit walking in love.*
*But it may be impossible for a normal human to love their
enemies -- without God's help. Fortunately, God's help is
available!*
*No matter how hard it seems, you can love those who have hurt
you. If it was not possible, God would not command us to do it.
Of course, to be successful at it, we need to call on the Lord
and receive His help.*
*"But why should I love my enemies?" You should know it is the
best thing for you to do, just because God said it. It benefits
you as well as the one who wronged you.*
*You have two basic choices when someone does you wrong. Do
wrong back to them. Or, return good for evil.*
*If you fight back, then they will have a valid excuse to
continue mistreating you. Is that what you want? If not, then
the intelligent choice is to stop the vicious cycle by
returning good for evil. Love your enemies until they become
your friends.*
*SAY THIS: I can, and will, love everyone with God's help.*

Yet the LORD longs to be gracious to you;

*Daily Devotional
*Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based on the book of
Proverbs in the Bible. * * * The Wisdom of God*
*Verses for the Day:*
*Proverbs 21:11-12 (KJV):
**11 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the
wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
12 The righteous man wisely considereth the house of the wicked: but God
overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.
**
**Proverbs 21:11-12 (AMP):
11 When the scoffer is punished, the fool gets a lesson in being wise; but
men of wisdom and good sense learn by being instructed.
**12 The (uncompromisingly) righteous man considers well the house of the
wicked, how the wicked are cast down to ruin. *
*Thoughts for the Day:*
These verses in *Proverbs *show us that there are two ways to gain
instruction in living. One is to learn by instruction and observation and
the other is to learn by the experience of sowing and reaping. In* verse
11 *we are shown how the scorner learns a lesson when he does something
foolish, because he will suffer punishment for his wrong doings. However,
the wise person does not have to learn things the hard way because he will
take advice and listen to instruction; therefore, he will not suffer any
ill-effects because he will not do the things that cause them. This is the
law of "cause and effect" or the Bible calls it the law of "sowing and
reaping."
Many times God is blamed for things that He did not do. God set the limits
and boundaries for mankind, and when we violate them, we cause problems for
ourselves. God did not bring these on us. They come on us because we
violate the law or the rules that God set. The only way we can blame God
for these is to blame Him for creating us and giving us His rules.
However, we should not be mad at God for doing this, as being one of His
children is a great privilege, not something that is bad. We can avoid much
of the pain we suffer in this world by obeying God's rules.
We can learn by two different means. We can learn by hearing and obeying,
or we can learn by trial and error. If we hear and obey, we need not go
through bad experiences to discover the truth. Some people declare they
learned a lot through their tragedies. The same lessons, however, could
have been learned by studying the Word of God, and then obeying it. For
example, I do not have to learn the truth of the following
*Proverb*through actual transgression,
* "...the way of transgressors is hard" (Proverb 13:15)*. I can simply
believe that it is the truth, and commit no transgression. If I choose to
disbelieve this verse and sin, I will find out the "hard way" that the way
of the transgressor is hard. The Lord would have us believe His Word and
obey it.
According to* verse 12*, another way we can avoid reaping evil consequences
is by taking notice as to what happens to the wicked and thereby avoiding
doing the things that they do. When we look at the fate of the wicked it
should be a visual lesson for us not to engage in the kind of activities
that brought them down. The wicked are destroyed by reaping what they have
sown.
*Psalm
9:16a:
The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared
in the work of his own hands. *
The Lord instructs us to follow Him in submissive obedience and not be like
a horse or mule that has to have a bit and bridle in its mouth to guide it.*
*We are promised mercy and blessing when we follow God, while the wicked
will suffer many sorrows. *
Psalm 32:8-10:
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I
will guide thee with mine eye.
9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding:
whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto
thee.
10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD,
mercy shall compass him about.*
*Prayer for the Day:*
*Dear Heavenly Father, I praise You and thank You that You do hear and
answer my prayers. Lord, help me stay on the straight and narrow path so
that I do not go down the wrong roads and have to learn the hard way.
Lord, I know that when I diligently seek You, that You will answer me and
save me from many pitfalls. Help me to avoid the things that will cause me
pain and trouble in the future. I want to hear Your voice so that I can
make wise decisions and avert many of the traps and tribulations that the
enemy wants to use to destroy me. Keep me from evil, and help me to trust
You. Please give me the strength to obey You in all things. I ask this in
Jesus' name. Amen.*

The Man of Galilee
For reading & meditation: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance ...
that he was raised on the third day ..." (vv. 3-4)
What other world religion has at its heart such a glorious fact as our
Lord's resurrection? Christianity is the only faith whose Founder died
upon a cross, was buried for three days, and then returned from the
dead. There are voices in today's church trying to persuade us that
the resurrection of Christ never took place - that our Lord did not
rise from the dead in bodily form. "It is not necessary to believe in
the bodily resurrection of Christ in order to be a Christian," says
one modern-day religious teacher. He goes on to claim: We may freely
say that the bones of Jesus are still lying somewhere in the land of
Israel." "I quite expect," says another religious writer, "that the
bones of Jesus will be dug up one day." And a few years ago, David
Jenkins, the former Anglican bishop, shocked the Christian world, as
you probably know, with the statement: I have not the slightest
interest in a conjuring trick with bones. In the British Museum in
London
there used to be a grim exhibit known as The Galilee Man," so called
because the remains were found in the area surrounding Galilee. I
remember thinking to myself the first time I visited the British
Museum and saw that the exhibit was captioned "The Galilee Man," how
wonderful that the disinterred bones of the Galilee man are not the
remains of the Man of Galilee.
Prayer:
Loving heavenly Father, help me understand even more deeply the truth
of Your Son's resurrection, for such an important truth cannot be left
to lie in the realm of uncertainty. Take my hand and lead me more
deeply into this truth. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
For further study:
John 20:1-18; Acts 2:23-24; Acts 2:23-24;
Thank God for what you have,
Trust God for what you need.

Morning
Think upon me, my God, for good.
Thus saith the LORD; I remember thee, the kindness of thy youth, the love
of thy espousals, when thou wentest after me in the wilderness.--I will
remember my covenant with thee in the days of thy youth, and I will
establish to thee an everlasting covenant.--I will visit you, and perform
my good word toward you.--For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,
saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected
end.
[As] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your
ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.--I would seek to God, and to God
would I commit my cause: who doeth great things and unsearchable; wonderful
things without number.--Many, O LORD my God, [are] thy wonderful works
[which] thou hast done, and thy thoughts [which are] toward us: they cannot
be reckoned up in order to thee: [if] I would declare and speak [of them],
they are more than can be numbered.

Evening
I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
There failed nothing of any good thing which the LORD had spoken to the
house of Israel; all came to pass.--God [is] not a man, that he should lie;
neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he
not do [it]? or hath he spoke, and shall he not make it good?
The LORD thy God, he [is] God, the faithful God, who keepeth covenant and
mercy with them that love him.--He will ever be mindful of his covenant.
Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion
on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet I will not forget thee.
Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of [my] hands; thy walls [are]
continually before me.
The LORD thy God in the midst of thee [is] mighty; he will save, he will
rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee
with singing.

"For me to live is Christ."-Philippians 1:21
The believer did not always live to Christ. He began to do so when God the
Holy Spirit convinced him of sin, and when by grace he was brought to see
the dying Saviour making a propitiation for his guilt. From the moment of
the new and celestial birth the man begins to live to Christ. Jesus is to
believers the one pearl of great price, for whom we are willing to part
with all that we have. He has so completely won our love, that it beats
alone for Him; to His glory we would live, and in defence of His gospel we
would die; He is the pattern of our life, and the model after which we
would sculpture our character. Paul's words mean more than most men think;
they imply that the aim and end of his life was Christ-nay, his life itself
was Jesus. In the words of an ancient saint, he did eat, and drink, and
sleep eternal life. Jesus was his very breath, the soul of his soul, the
heart of his heart, the life of his life. Can you say, as a professing
Christian, that you live up to this!
idea? Can you honestly say that for you to live is Christ? Your
business-are you doing it for Christ? Is it not done for
self-aggrandizement and for family advantage? Do you ask, "Is that a mean
reason?" For the Christian it is. He professes to live for Christ; how can
he live for another object without committing a spiritual adultery? Many
there are who carry out this principle in some measure; but who is there
that dare say that he hath lived wholly for Christ as the apostle did?
Yet,this alone is the true life of a Christian-its source, its sustenance,
its fashion, its end, all gathered up in one word-Christ Jesus. Lord,
accept me; I here present myself, praying to live only in Thee and to Thee.
Let me be as the bullock which stands between the plough and the altar, to
work or to be sacrificed; and let my motto be, "Ready for either."

"My sister, my spouse."-Song of Solomon 4:12
Observe the sweet titles with which the heavenly Solomon with intense
affection addresses His bride the church. "My sister, one near to me by
ties of nature, partaker of the same sympathies. My spouse, nearest and
dearest, united to me by the tenderest bands of love; my sweet companion,
part of my own self. My sister, by my Incarnation, which makes me bone of
thy bone and flesh of thy flesh; my spouse, by heavenly betrothal, in which
I have espoused thee unto myself in righteousness. My sister, whom I knew
of old, and over whom I watched from her earliest infancy; my spouse, taken
from among the daughters, embraced by arms of love, and affianced unto me
for ever. See how true it is that our royal Kinsman is not ashamed of us,
for He dwells with manifest delight upon this two-fold relationship. We
have the word "my" twice in our version; as if Christ dwelt with rapture on
His possession of His Church. "His delights were with the sons of men,"
because those sons of men were Hi!
s own chosen ones. He, the Shepherd, sought the sheep, because they were
His sheep; He has gone about "to seek and to save that which was lost,"
because that which was lost was His long before it was lost to itself or
lost to Him. The church is the exclusive portion of her Lord; none else may
claim a partnership, or pretend to share her love. Jesus, thy church
delights to have it so! Let every believing soul drink solace out of these
wells. Soul! Christ is near to thee in ties of relationship; Christ is dear
to thee in bonds of marriage union, and thou art dear to Him; behold He
grasps both of thy hands with both His own, saying, "My sister, my spouse."
Mark the two sacred holdfasts by which thy Lord gets such a double hold of
thee that He neither can nor will ever let thee go. Be not, O beloved, slow
to return the hallowed flame of His love.

A New and Living Way
"Therefore brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy
Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us
through the curtain, that is his body. . . let us draw near to God
with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts
sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies
washed in pure water. . ." Hebrews 10:19-22
Unlike worshipers of old we no longer have to depend on sacrifices and
priests to enter into worship with God. When Christ died to redeem
mankind the veil of the temple was rent in two. No longer was there a
veil separating the worshiper from his God. This rending of the veil
opened the way for every worshiper to come by a new and living way
straight into the divine Presence of God. No longer were there any
restrictions placed on the worshiper. Christ has cleansed us from all
unrighteousness, he has removed what once separated us from God. He
has opened the door, let us enter in, let us draw near to Him and
dwell in His presence. God wills that we should push on into His
presence and live our whole lives there.
Father, thank You for making a way for us to enter into Your presence.
You provided Jesus to pay the price that we might have the opportunity
to live in Your presence always. The world wishes to pull us away from
You, Lord; help us to live in Your presence for all eternity. Amen

Love Like God"Though he was God, he did not demand and cling to his
rights as God." Philippians 2:6 NLT
Need more patience? Drink from the patience of God (2 Peter 3:9). Is
generosity an elusive virtue? Then consider how generous God has been
with you (Romans 5:8).
Having trouble putting up with ungrateful relatives or cranky
neighbors? God puts up with you when you act the same. "He is kind to
the ungrateful and the wicked" (Luke 6:35 NIV).
Can't we love like this?

Ephesians 2:13
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by
the blood of Christ.
A friend of mine who was dangerously overweight lamented to me once
that she was 'so fat that God wouldn't even recognize me as the person
He created.' She felt that her weight problems had driven a wedge
between her and God. How sad. Nothing that we do ever really separates
us from God, but when we feel badly about ourselves, we feel we are
unlovable, even by God. It is important that we see ourselves as good
people. God loves us no matter how we look, but He is delighted with
us when we take pride in who He created us to be. God will bless our
efforts, so we need to draw as close to Him as possible as we attempt
to diet.
Today's thought: God loves us just as we are.

C. H. Spurgeon
January 7
Always Growing
Thou shalt see greater than these. (John 1:50)
This is spoken to a childlike believer, who was ready to accept Jesus
as the Son of God, the King of Israel, upon one convincing piece of
argument. Those who are willing to see shall see; it is because we
shut our eyes that we become so sadly blind.
We have seen much already. Great things and unsearchable has the Lord
showed unto us, for which we praise His name; but there are greater
truths in His Word, greater depths of experience, greater heights of
fellow-ship, greater works of usefulness, greater discoveries of
power, and love, and wisdom. These we are yet to see if we are willing
to believe our Lord. The faculty of inventing false doctrine is
ruinous, but power to see the truth is a blessing. Heaven shall be
opened to us, the way thither shall be made clear to us in the Son of
Man, and the angelic commerce which goes on between the upper and the
lower kingdoms shall be made more manifest to us. Let us keep our eyes
open toward spiritual objects and expect to see more and more. Let us
believe that our lives will not drivel down into nothing but that we
shall be always on the growing hand, seeing greater and still greater
things, till we behold the great God Himself and never again lose the
sight of Him.
As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Psalm 3:3
But thou, O lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.
I was walking along one day, deeply troubled and feeling quite alone.
Pressures and problems seemed too much to bear, and I found nothing to
make me feel hopeful. My deep thought was broken by a flutter of wings
and a flash of color. A butterfly flitted in front of my face, then
alighted on my shoulder. The grace and beauty of the small creature
broke through my depression and caused me to smile. The great weight I
was feeling in my heart lifted, and I began chastising myself for
having been so foolish. In a world where such glory exists, why do we
continually allow worldly concerns to occupy so much our attention?
Let God be our glory, and indeed, when we find ourselves most down, He
will lift our heads up and show us all the wonders of His magnificent
creation.
Prayer: Lord, protect me from those things that turn my attention from
You. Clear the eyes of my heart so they can focus on the splendor of
Your creation. Thank You for the blessings of this day. Amen.

PSALMS 46:10 BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD; I WILL BE EXALTED
AMONG THE HEATHEN, I WILL BE EXALTED IN THE EARTH.
Today is a great day to give praise and honor to the Lord God Jehovah
who has patiently awaited to hear your words of praise in worship,
exalting Him above everything for He is everything for all things come
from Him even the lungs with which you breathe the breath of air that
comes from Him. You have every reason to praise the Lord for He is
worthy of praise at all times. Sometimes life seems to serve you
badly but God is still on His Throne where only He is able to abide
but He gives unto His people throne rights and He listens attentively
to the sinner's prayer of repentance, even all that call on His Name
for He saves the child who comes to Him seeking salvation knowing not
a repentant heart as do those that repentant sinners have.
There will be those who will say I have not spoken these words for it
is against what you have been taught and what you believe but all must
come to Me as a little child. Precious in My sight are the little
ones who have not been led astray by the wiles of the devil and who's
hearts are still tender.
Be careful to teach the little ones about the love of Jesus for the
world is ready to teach them the ways of the world which is contrary
to My ways.
Come for God is waiting for you now to come and worship.

God Means It
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to
accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. --Genesis
50:20-21
I draw a lot of inspiration from the story of Joseph.
Although he was never paralyzed, a lot of things happened to him that
could be construed as accidents. There were plenty of unfortunate
mishaps in Joseph's life, like being tossed by his envious brothers
into a pit and left to die. But later on -- after more mishaps --
Joseph told his brothers, "You intended to harm me, but God intended
it for good so that others might be saved."
I like that word intended. He is a God of intention -- he
has a purpose, a target, a goal, and a plan. God was a giant step
ahead of Joseph's brothers, aborting their evil intentions to suit his
own purposes. Joseph's problems did not catch God off guard,
presenting him with situations he wished would never have happened.
From the beginning, God calculated for Joseph to experience all these
things. Why? For the salvation of others.
God is not a sweep-up boy who follows you with a dustpan
and brush, second-guessing how everything will fit into a divine
pattern for good. He does not put on a hazmat suit so that an evil
situation doesn't contaminate his holy reputation.
Think of disappointing or bad things that have happened to
you. God's hands stay on the wheel of your life from start to finish
so that everything follows his intention for your life. This means
your trials have more meaning -- much more -- than you realize. Your
problems have more purpose than you can imagine. Not because God
merely used bad things, but because God intended them so that others
might be brought to Jesus through your example.
Lord God, I praise you that your intentions in my life are
always good. Every 'accident' happens so that somehow, someway others
might be introduced to the Savior through me.
Blessings,

Today's Promise from the Bible
1 Corinthians 1:8
Who shall also confirm you unto the end, [that ye may be] blameless in
the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reflection
"How desirable is it to be confirmed and kept of Christ for such a
purpose as this! How glorious are the hopes of such a privilege,
whether for ourselves or others! To be kept by the power of Christ
from the power of our own corruption and Satan's temptation, that we
may appear without blame in the great day! O glorious expectation,
especially when the faithfulness of God comes in to support our
hopes!"

Really Living
1 Thessalonians 3:7-9: Therefore, brothers, in all our distress and
persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. For
now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord. How can
we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the
presence of our God because of you?
When we contend for the faith in the lives of our friends, it is most
encouraging to see results. It would be good then to tell those who
have helped you in your faith what God is doing in your life. And it
is good to continue to encourage those that we have helped, so that
like Paul, we can "really live."

Meaningful Love
While the all-important distinction between the human and the
spiritual love of Jesus is one that must be discerned, and one which
can scarcely be explained, we yet venture to point out some marks
which may distinguish the two. Reverence, for one thing, will always
be present in the heart of the one who loves Christ in the Spirit. The
Spirit gives a holy solemnity to every thought of Jesus, so that is
psychologically impossible to think of the true Christ with humor or
levity. Neither can there be any unbecoming familiarity. The Person of
Christ precludes all such. Then, self-abasement is always found in the
heart that loves Jesus with true spiritual love. When Paul saw Jesus,
he fell on his face. John fell down as dead, and every soul that ever
saw and felt the terror and wonder of His glorious Presence, has known
some such experience of self-abasement. It is important that we know
whether our relation to Jesus is divine or human. It will pay us to
find out now.
Verse
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my
love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I
have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. John 15:9-10
Thought
Christ has loved us as the Father loved Him. We are to live in
Christ's love. That love will be shown to Him by obeying Him, not
merely to escape the results of disobedience, but because we love Him.
Prayer
O Lord, forgive me for those sentimental outbursts of which I am
sometimes guilty which are supposed to express love. If I really love
You I will obey You, worship You.

Days of Heaven on Earth

This is a most precious promise. The revised translation is both
accurate and suggestive. It is not merely from falling that He wants
to keep us, but from even the slightest stumbling.
We are told that Abraham staggered not at the promise (Romans 4:20).
God wants us to walk so steadily that there will not even be a quiver
in the line of His regiments as they face the foe. It is the little
stumblings of life that most discourage and hinder us, and most of
these stumblings are over trivialities. Satan would much rather knock
us down with a feather than with a gun. It is much more to his honor
and delight to defeat a child of God by some insignificant matter than
by some great temptation.
Beloved, let us be on guard against the banana peels that trip us on
our pathway, the little foxes that destroy the vines and the dead
flies that spoil a whole vessel of precious ointment. "Trifles make
perfection," and as we get farther on in our Christian life, God will
hold us much more closely to obedience in things that seem
insignificant.
Scripture
Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling—Jude 24
