SPIRITUALLY ALIVE

1 John 5:11, 12 NIV
And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is
in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of
God does not have life.

When God breathed life into Adam, he was both physically and spiritually
alive. Adam was spiritually alive because his soul was in union with God.
We were never designed to be separated from God or to live independently of
Him. We were born to be spiritually alive.

For the Christian, to be spiritually alive is to be in union with God. This
concept is repeatedly presented in Scripture by the prepositional phrase in
Christ . Being in Christ is the theme of the New Testament. Like Adam, we
were created to be in union with God. But Adam sinned and his union with
God, and ours as well, was severed. It is God's eternal plan to bring human
creation back to Himself and restore the union He enjoyed with Adam at
creation. That restored union with God, which we find in Christ, is the
essence of our identity.

When you were born again, your soul was united with God and you came alive
spiritually, as alive as Adam was in the garden before he sinned. As the
New Testament repeatedly declares, you are now in Christ , and Christ is in
you. Since Christ who is in you is eternal, the spiritual life you have
received from Him is eternal. You don't have to wait until you die to get
eternal life; you possess it right now!

The apostle John wrote, "He who has the Son has the life" (1 John 5:12). He
probably remembered Jesus' statement to Martha: "I am the resurrection and
the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone
who lives and believes in Me shall never die" (John 11:25, 26). After Jesus
said this to Martha, He added, "Do you believe this?" (verse 26).

The Word of God is clear: Because of Jesus, we will continue to live
spiritually even after we die physically. Do you believe this?

Prayer: Dear Father, I declare my wholehearted belief that my spiritual
life--eternal life--is in You. Help me live today with eternity's values in
view.

Read Genesis 49 – Exodus 1
Highlights:
Jacob's prophecies; deaths of Jacob and Joseph; the Hebrews oppressed in
Egypt.
After Joseph's death, the prestige the Israelites had enjoyed in Egypt
gradually declined and then disappeared. There arose up a new king over
Egypt who felt no obligation to the descendants of Joseph (Ex. 1:8).
Instead, he was fearful of the Israelites' growing numbers and said to his
administrators: Behold, the people . . . of Israel are more and mightier
than we . . . let us deal wisely with them; lest . . . they join . . . our
enemies, and fight against us. . . . Therefore they did set over them
taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. . . . But the more they
afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved
because of the children of Israel (1:9-12).
Desperate for an answer to his dilemma, Pharaoh demanded of the Hebrew
midwives . . . if it be a son, then ye shall kill him (1:15-16). Sometime
after this horrible edict was issued, a man of the house of Levi . . . took
to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman . . . bare a son: and . . . she
hid him three months (2:1-2). But then, fearful of being discovered, she
prepared an ark of bulrushes . . . and put the child therein; and she laid
it in the flags (reeds) by the river's brink (edge) (2:3).
If it had not been for Pharaoh's cruel edict, Moses would never have been
rescued by Pharaoh's daughter and given all the advantages of the world's
greatest empire of that time. God was preparing Moses to lead the
Israelites to the promised land.
We may be forced to endure suffering under the control of a situation where
we may be as powerless as the baby Moses in a homemade ark floating in the
Nile River. It could be that death has left us without a parent or spouse.
Some may feel defeated following a divorce. Others may have received a
diagnosis of terminal illness from a doctor. Throughout life, all of us
will face unforeseen and unavoidable sorrows.
In spite of all life's difficulties, every Christian, regardless of
circumstances, can say with the Apostle Paul: I am persuaded (convinced),
that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers,
nor things present, nor things to come . . . nor any other creature, shall
be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our
Lord (Rom. 8:38-39).
Thought for Today:
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath
called you out of darkness into His marvellous light (I Pet. 2:9).
Christ Revealed:
As the Messiah who would come through the tribe of Judah. The sceptre shall
not depart from Judah . . . until Shiloh (Peacemaker) come (Gen. 49:10).
Jesus . . . the son (descendant)of . . . Juda (Luke 3:23-33).
Word Studies:
Gen. 49:10 gathering, obedience; 49:20 fat, rich; 49:21 hind, deer; 50:15

Genesis 37

Jacob's son, Joseph, is sold by his brothers.

INSIGHT

Feeling loved is one of life's greatest needs. When we do not feel loved,
we often will go to great lengths to try to earn love or retaliate against
those who keep us from being loved.

Joseph's brothers contemplated murder but instead kidnapped Joseph to get
rid of him. His brothers thought of him as a threat -- all because Jacob
displayed his preference for Joseph.

Jacob's preferential treatment of Joseph in no way condones the actions of
the brothers, but it points out to us as Christians that we should love all
men as Christ would. When individuals feel that love, it makes it easier
for them to love others in return.

PRAYER

· Praise our Lord that He can enable us to avoid showing partiality, so
that we can love as He loves (James 2:1):

Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints!
There is no want to those who fear Him
(Psalm 34:8-9).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free from sin and
in fellowship with Him:

Against You, You only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in Your sight --
That You may be found just when You speak,
And blameless when You judge (Psalm 51:4).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the
things which God has prepared for those who love Him (1 Corinthians 2:9).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· wisdom in decision making,
· the needs of your friends,
· your prayer list.

· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

The Lord bless us and keep us;
The Lord make His face shine upon us,
And be gracious to us;
The Lord lift up His countenance upon us,
And give us peace
(based on Numbers 6:24-26).

The Marketplace Minister and the Pulpit Minister Partnership

"When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took
hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD's anger burned
against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down
and he died there beside the ark of God."- (2 Samuel 6:6-8).
David was the ultimate marketplace leader. He began his life as a shepherd.
He later became a warrior, then king. He never lost a battle. He amassed
wealth and was responsible for building the greatest physical testimony to
the living God on earth when he established the plan for his son Solomon to
build the temple of God in Jerusalem.
David wanted to honor the Lord by bringing the tabernacle home from Balah
of Judah. He prepared for this glorious day and worshiped God during the
entire trip. However, David moved the tabernacle using a cart being drawn
by oxen. During the journey, a crisis took place. The cart tilted and one
of his favorite men grabbed for the cart in an effort to sturdy it. He was
immediately struck dead by God. Yes, by God!
David was devastated. He thought he was doing a good thing. He became so
angry with God that he delayed the transfer of the ark for three months.
From this point forward, David's belief about God radically changed.
The problem was that David had passion without knowledge. The Ark could
only be carried with poles by the priests. Had David consulted the priests
about his desire to bring God's presence into the city, he would have been
informed of the requirements for moving the ark. The lesson here is that
David moved out of presumption. His presumption cost him dearly.
Today, the role of priest is to equip the saints for the work of ministry
(Ephesians 4:11). It does not mean that saints don't have a responsibility
to seek God on their own. However, God desires a partnership between the
workplace minister and the pulpit minister. We are a team that needs one
another to accomplish the task of bringing God's presence into the city.

Girlfriends in God

The Power of Forgiveness Part 1
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
The LORD said to me again, 'Go, show your love to a woman loved by someone
else, who has been unfaithful to you. In the same way the LORD loves the
people of Israel, even though they worship other gods and love to eat the
raisin cakes.' So I bought her for six ounces of silver and ten bushels of
barley. Then I told her, 'You must wait for me for many days. You must not
be a prostitute, and you must not have sexual relations with any other man.
I will act the same way toward you.' In the same way Israel will live many
days without a king or leader, without sacrifices or holy stone pillars,
and without the holy vest or an idol. After this, the people of Israel will
return to the LORD their God and follow him and the king from David's
family. In the last days, they will turn in fear to the LORD, and he will
bless them (Hosea 3:1-5, NCV).
Friend to Friend
True love is strong, unconditional – God's love – a love that we cannot
understand or explain in human terms. The life of the Old Testament
prophet, Hosea, powerfully illustrates this kind of love. Hosea was married
to Gomer and together they had three children. Gomer was unfaithful to
Hosea, betraying the covenant of marriage. Hosea had every right to walk
away, but love that never fails calls us up to higher choices that are
beyond human reasoning. Supernatural choices demand supernatural action and
sacrifice.
Hosea 3:2 "So I bought her for six ounces of silver and ten bushels of
barley" (NCV).
Think about it. Hosea was the one who had been wronged and humiliated. Yes,
he was the one following God but he was also the one called to sacrifice.
We misunderstand the full meaning of sacrifice, thinking it is only a
decision to "give up" self-centered rights, hoarded resources or the
freedom to walk away. Sacrifice is a mirror reflecting our own pride and
sin, calling us to lay down all sense of human justice or fairness in order
for God to work in and through us to love others. What sacrifices did God
call Hosea to make?
· Hosea had to sacrifice his pride.
The phrase "loved by another," suggests Gomer was owned by a family friend
or fellow citizen. She may have been sleeping with one or more of Hosea's
friends or, at the very least, one of his neighbors. Hosea had to swallow
his pride and go to her in love and forgiveness. Now let me just tell you
that if I had been the one going to find Gomer, I would have been more
likely to snatch her up by the hair and drag her home in front of as many
people as possible to prove she could not get away with what she was doing.
Better yet, I would have said, "Good riddance. You can keep her!" I am
certain I could find many who would agree with my plan of punishment and
revenge. It seems to me that Hosea stood to gain very little but lose a
great deal by choosing to respond as he did. Hosea was called on to
sacrifice everything to redeem a woman who did not deserve sacrifice or
redemption. Jesus did the same thing for us when He died on the cross. He
now calls us to respond with that same God-like heart attitude of
redemption.
· Hosea had to sacrifice his rights.
Gomer broke the covenant of marriage. Don't miss this pivotal truth.
Biblically, Hosea had every justification to divorce Gomer. He could have
tossed her out and turned her children against her, stripping her life of
every good thing. Hosea could have destroyed Gomer, and no one would have
blamed him. Instead, Hosea rose to a higher place when he laid down his
anger, hurt and the right to retaliate or seek revenge. It doesn't stop
there.
Hosea took the initiative and went to her. Matthew describes a forgiveness
we find hard to understand. "So if you are standing before the altar in the
Temple, offering a sacrifice to God, and you suddenly remember that someone
has something against you, leave your sacrifice there beside the altar. Go
and be reconciled to that person. Then come and offer your sacrifice to
God" (Matthew 5:23, NLT). Notice what this verse says. If we know someone
has something against us and we refuse to deal with it, nothing we do or
say will count in Kingdom work. God always seeks restoration and
reconciliation and commands us to look past what seems like a logical
reaction to the highest obedience we can offer.
There is one more very important step in learning to truly forgive. Don't
miss the rest of Hosea and Gomer's story in Thursday's devotion.

Let's Pray
Father, I am so tired of holding on to the pain in my life. I want to
forgive those who have hurt me and learn how to let go of the pain and walk
on. Today, I lay down my pride and my rights. I will not seek revenge or
retaliation. Instead, I choose to love my enemies and bless those who have
harmed me. Please give me the strength and power to honor you as I step out
in obedience.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

~CHOOSE YOU THIS DAY~

".......But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."
....Joshua 24: 15.
* * * * * * * * * * *
The world looks at people and makes a decision of which side they are on, by
their actions. When we see people who serve the Lord with all their
heart,
we know they are on the Lord's side. Yet, when people are observed by
others
who live a life of sin, we know they are not on the Lord's side.
Regardless
of how religious one may act, if they have not made Jesus Lord of their
life,
they are lost in sin.

Christians are told not to "forsake not the assembling of themselves
together." The Body of Christ needs one another, as we all work together,
for His purpose, with goals to edify and build up the Church.
Some Christians are not physically able to gather with other believers
to worship and praise the Lord. And, we see those who are able,
yet have no desire to do so. Our prayer is that every heart will see
a need to fellowship with other believers to worship the Lord,
and obey His commands.

God has given many opportunities to reach those with a desire for the
Lord, who are unable to join with other believers, and also for these to
participate
in worship through various internet ministries. May our desire be to
reach
out to others, in the name of the Lord, and believe He will provide all we
need.
"Little is much" when God is in it.

There are many in the churches today, who are also a part of the world, and
have not fully surrendered every part of their life to the Lord. Jesus is
calling
them, and patiently waits for them to let Him be Lord of all. Our prayers
can make a difference, if we see others through the eyes of love, and
know Jesus came to set them free. Just as He brought us out and gave
us new life, He stands ready to restore those who will repent and follow
Him.

Our Lord did not come to condemn the world, but that the world through
Him, might be saved. Our prayer is for eyes to be opened to behold
the Savior and hear His call for them to let Him be "Lord of all."

The story was told of a little old man who was seen every Sunday morning,
walking to church. He was deaf, so he could not hear a word of the sermon
or
the music of the choir, or the hymns sung by the congregation. A
scoffer asked,
"Why do you spend your Sundays in that church when you can't hear a word?"
He replied, "I want my neighbors to know which side I'm on!" The man
had a desire to let the world know He was on the Lord's side, not only
by his testimony, but by his works and faithfulness to keep God's commands.
Circumstances around the elderly gentleman did not determine his
joy or heart's desire.

We must choose this day whom we will serve, and be truly dedicated to the
Lord.
Others know by our works and actions, if we are truly dedicated to God.
When our hearts are fully committed to Him, we serve Him faithfully. We
will
also care for others. God rewards our faithfulness. Jesus is our candle
in
the wind and light in the darkest night. It's good to know we are on
the
Lord's side, and His side is the only winning team! Stay on the right path
with the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be abundantly blessed.

Blessings In Christ,

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around
in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" …But Jesus kept looking
around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to
her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole
truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace
and be freed from your suffering." --Mark 5:30, 32-34
During the 1890's, a small newspaper reported that Julia Ward Howe, a woman
dedicated to helping free slaves, asked a United States senator to help
liberate a black man who was in a dangerous situation.
The politician said, "Madam, I'm so busy with plans for the benefit of the
whole race that I have no time to help individuals!"
Angry by his lack of compassion and sympathy, Howe quickly replied, "I'm so
glad our Lord never displayed such a calloused attitude!"
In our busy lives, we must never forget our service to others in the name
of Jesus. Timothy was a true servant of the Lord. Paul said of him, "I
hope…to send Timothy to you soon…I have no one else like him, who takes a
genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own
interests, not those of Jesus Christ. But you know that Timothy has proved
himself, because…he has served with me in the work of the gospel"
(Philippians 2:19-22).
People like Timothy, the apostle Paul, and Christ's disciples worked to
spread the Gospel of Jesus and serve others as Christ did. Are you serving
the Lord and others consistently? It is your responsibility as a believer
to always put aside the busyness of life, position, and social status to
serve others in the name of Jesus. When you learn to have an obedient and
servant heart for Him, He'll accomplish great things through your life,
things you may not have thought possible.

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Ask God to show you opportunities to serve others in His
name.

January 17, 2012

VERSE:
Learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend
the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
-- Isaiah 1:17

THOUGHT:
"A man's got to take care of himself!" Yeah, we do have to be
responsible folks. But, part of being responsible, part of being
blessed -- at least as God sees it -- is to care for others, to
stick up for the disadvantaged, and to intervene when someone else
is being exploited. After all, we are our "brother's and sister's
keeper!"

PRAYER:
Remove the heart of selfishness, O God, that keeps me from
caring for the downtrodden, abused, forgotten, and broken. Give me
your eyes of concern and Jesus' heart of compassion to see them and
minister to them. In his name, the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

How Your Perception of God Affects You
Day 223

Points to think about:
. Your identity, security, and confidence are all deeply woven into
your perception of God.

. You may have a false perception of God because of the human tendency
to project onto Him the unloving characteristics of people you have
looked up to.

. You may believe that God is going to treat you as others do.

. Your perception of God must come from the Scriptures and not from
your past relationships, some of which may have been very harmful.

Robert McGee in Search for Significance says, "There have been many
times in my life when I felt that God was going to punish me by
causing me to lose all that I had, either because I'd done something I
shouldn't have, or because I failed to do something I should have.
This erroneous perception of God had driven me away from Him on many
occasions when I've needed Him most, and is completely contrary to the
One whom Paul describes as the 'Father of mercies and God of all
comfort [2 Corinthians 1:3]'" (Word Publishing, 1998).

Father God, my relationship with You is not about my effort to obey or
to be a good Christian; it is about who You are and who I can be
through You. Amen.

She Stands Alone
Glynnis Whitwer

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move
you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you
know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58
(NIV)

I wiped beads of sweat from my forehead as I pushed the shopping cart
towards my car. Unloading my groceries as fast as I could, I hopped in
my car, hoping for quick relief. But the triple digit temperatures had
seeped inside. Blasting the air conditioning, I pulled out of the
parking lot on to a back street. That's when I saw her. Standing
alone.

A petite figure stood on the sidewalk in front of a brick building. A
black covering draped her head, leading to a black dress, black hose
and sturdy black shoes. Though she faced the building, I could see she
held a Bible. Her head bent over the cradled book as she stood in the
sweltering heat. Alone.

It took but a moment to pass her, but the image of her standing alone
branded into my brain. Oh, I've seen people standing alone in front of
buildings. But this wasn't just any building. This wasn't a bank or a
restaurant. There was no bus stop in front. The women entering this
building were broken, and weren't going in for healing.

And on that hot summer afternoon one woman stood alone praying for
them and the children they carried.

She stood alone for what she believed God told her to do that day. In
the heat. Facing discomfort, odd looks and probably some derisive
comments. Some might say her sacrifice made no difference. We'll never
know.

We'll never know whose plans were changed by her prayers, by her
willingness to stand alone.

Moments before I saw her, all I thought about was getting out of the
heat. But her conviction challenged me to ask: For what cause am I
willing to stand alone?

The sight of her touched me deeply because I know the exhaustion of
battle fatigue. I've sat in frustration rather than standing firm. I
know what weary feels like when it seems my efforts aren't making a
significant difference. I've felt cornered rather than like a
conqueror.

Some days, I'm tired of standing for what I believe in. I think others
would stand taller, or with less exhaustion. They'd deal with
discouragement better than me. They'd show mercy where I show
frustration. Maybe someone else could ... maybe they should ... take
over for me.

That's when the image of this humble woman comes to mind. And the Lord
says to me:

You just think she's standing alone. She's not. I'm right next to her.
And I'll be right next to you. Keep standing.

So I breathe in and breathe out. I picture the precious sister
standing in front of the building. Only this time, she's not alone. In
my mind I see Jesus standing beside her.

And on my own street, in my own life, in my own home, facing my own
calling, wondering if I'm making any difference, I determine to stand
another day. For a cause I believe in ... for the cause of Christ ...
wherever He calls me to stand.

Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me that when I think I'm standing
alone, I'm not. Thank You for being my hope in difficult times, and
holding me up when I want to sit this one out. Help me to remember You
are a very present help in times of trouble. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Reflect and Respond:
Have I ever been tempted to give up on something because it seems too
overwhelming? What difference would it make if I knew Jesus was
standing right beside me?

Identify an area of your life where you have given up or want to.
Perhaps you've stopped praying, or inviting, or asking to talk with
someone. Commit to do one thing this week to move forward in this
area. This could be pray for five minutes, invite once more or ask
again.

Power Verses:
Romans 14:7, "For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us
dies for ourselves alone." (NIV)

Isaiah 41:10, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed,
for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold
you with my righteous right hand." (NIV)

This Day's Thought

Prayerless people cut themselves off from God's prevailing power, and
the frequent result is the familiar feeling of being overwhelmed,
overrun, beaten down, pushed around, defeated. Surprising numbers of
people are willing to settle for lives like that.

This Day's Verse

And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying
aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house,
the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe
that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he
touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to
you." And their eyes were opened.

The Sin of Prayerlessness
Pray without ceasing, (1 Thessalonians 5:17)
We must never forget that prayer is not only for petition, but also for
protection and for preparation. Prayer not only gives us what we want; it
prepares us for and protects us from what we don't want.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus was in anguish as He contemplated the
horrors of the cross. All He wanted the disciples to do was to be present
and praying. Being God, He knew what was ahead. He knew every detail. And
so He prayed, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me;
nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will" (Matthew 26:39).
All Jesus asked for was some companionship. He didn't need a sermon; He
needed some friends. But His friends were sleeping. And this was a direct
result of the sin of self-confidence.
The same can be true of us. We pray when we think we need to pray. When a
crisis hits, when we get bad news from the doctor, when we are laid off,
when we are having problems with our marriage or problems with our
children, what do we do? We pray. And that is good. It's what we should do.
But what about when things are going well? When the bills are paid, when
the job is looking good, when there is no bad news from any front, do you
pray then? Is it because you think you don't need to? Is it because of
self-confidence?
Failure to pray actually can be a sin. Sin isn't just breaking a
commandment, though it includes that. There is also the sin of omission.
James 4:17 tells us, "Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not
do it, to him it is sin.
Summary sentence: Pride and prayerlessness go hand in hand.

"God's Word to You"!

God's Word to You today is found in Acts 4:20

20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard."

I use this verse ever so often. It is one of my favorite verses. See, I
love sharing what I have seen Jesus do and the things He has allowed me to
see and be a part of in my life.

I also appreciate where He has taken me as well as what He has taken me out
of. My testimony is full of dire deeds and less than attractive
instances. In basic words I was good at sinning.

But my true testimony isn't where I was. It is where I am and where I am
going. I am thankful for the lady who inspired todays message because it
again proves there are no limits where and how God will use us. LB He used
you today, huh? Just wait till Venezuela.

Ok so the New Testament is made up of about 60% Paul's testimony. How
often do you see him writing all his sins? Where does he elaborate on all
the things he did before he met Christ? You don't. He mentions how he
persecuted and harmed the followers of Christ in several writings but his
past is quickly abandoned that he may tell of how Jesus has changed and
blessed his life. Folks our testimony is less about who we were and all
about what Christ has done.

Today I have a serious challenge. Write and memorize your testimony. And
make it only two minutes long when spoken. And if you like, I would
absolutely love to read them.

THE RICHES OF GOD'S GRACE
CONCLUSION

31. Peace with God and the Peace of God.
One of the greatest blessings in Christ is that God has made
available to each believer His perfect
peace. We are at peace with Him. No enmity exists between God
and the Christian. And we can
have perfect peace in the midst of the turmoils of life,
knowing that our relationship with God is
at peace, and we are in His care (Rom. 5: 1, Gal. 5:22, Phil.
4:7).

32. "Blessed Hope".
That great assurance and expectation of Christ's imminent
return, when every believer will
be caught up in the air to meet Him "who is the center of all
reality for the believer" (Chafer),
and will be released from the bondage of fallen, sinful
humanity and clothed in the fulness
of His glory (Titus 2:13)!

33. The Inheritance of the Saints.
Our inheritance is God Himself, to spend eternity in intimate
relationship with Him, and all
that is encompassed by that incomparable truth (Eph. 1:14).

34. Glorified.
"Awaiting the Child of God is a surpassingly heavenly glory:
Partaking of a portion of the
infinite glory which belongs to the Godhead" (Chafer). So great
is the assurance of this
truth that God speaks of having already accomplished it in
every believer (Rom. 8:18,30, Col. 3:4).

35. Complete in Him.
This truth consists of two parts (Col. 2:9-10):
1. "Complete". According to God's highest standards there
is nothing more He can do for His child
to make him more acceptable to Himself.
2. "In Him". This completion by necessity is in Christ.
"The father finds infinite delight in His Son;
He cannot find delight in that which is less than the
perfection of His Son" (Chafer).
Therefore the Believer has been made a partaker of all
that Christ is, as outlined herein,
so that he or she may be a delight to the Father.

36. Eternal Life.
Every Believer will not only live forever but possesses the
quality of God's eternal life now.
This is not just eternal existence, but an intimate conjoining
to God and sharing of His life
for all eternity (Rom. 6:23,1 Jn. 5:12-13).

Just Think you are here,
Not by chance but by God's choosing.
His hand formed you
And made you the person you are.
He compares you to no one else - you are one of a kind.
You lack nothing that His grace can't give you.
He has allowed you to be here at this time in history
To fulfill His special purpose for this generation

Job 11:7
"Can you search out the deep things of God? Can you find out the
limits of the Almighty?"
A Big God
As the people of Job's day walked the earth, they likely didn't know
that our world is 8,000 miles in diameter, with approximately
198,980,000 square miles on its surface. It is unlikely that they
realized that this globe we call home is composed of 264 billion cubic
miles. Most surely it was beyond their knowledge to compute that even
though Earth is big, Saturn is 995 times bigger and Jupiter is 1,281
times bigger still. Furthermore, they had no inkling that beyond the
few stars they could see there were at least 300 billion more.
Yet even without the benefit of all these mind-boggling figures, the
people of Job's day knew that God, the Creator of all they saw, was
bigger than anything they could comprehend. Zophar the Naamathite, one
of Job's friends, was right when he said that no one could plumb God's
depths or find God's limits. His thoughts run deeper than any human
wisdom; His power outstrips man's best efforts.
Some people object to the concept of God because He is beyond their
ability to understand. They argue that if they can't comprehend Him,
then certainly He must not exist. Others simply dismiss Him as
irrelevant because He fails to act as they feel He should. Yet God
says, "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways
higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts" (Isa.
55:9). Who is man to try to whittle God down to what he can
understand?
Let God be God. Don't try to shrink Him down to fit neatly within your
scheme of things. If He were small enough for you to comprehend, He
wouldn't be big enough for you to worship. The fact that He is beyond
your understanding is confirmation that no situation will ever exceed
His ability to handle it. To live confidently, you don't have to
understand God--you just have to trust Him.
Only small people insist on a small God.

The Breaking of the Storm

"And there arose a great storm" (Mark 4:37).
Some of the storms of life come suddenly: a great sorrow, a bitter
disappointment, a crushing defeat. Some come slowly. They appear upon
the ragged edges of the horizon no larger than a man's hand, but,
trouble that seems so insignificant spreads until it covers the sky
and overwhelms us.
Yet it is in the storm that God equips us for service. When God wants
an oak He plants it on the moor where the storms will shake it and the
rains will beat down upon it, and it is in the midnight battle with
elements that the oak wins its rugged fibre and becomes the king of
the forest.
When God wants to make a man He puts him into some storm. The history
of manhood is always rough and rugged. No man is made until he has
been out into the surge of the storm and found the sublime fulfillment
of the prayer: "O God, take me, break me, make me."
A Frenchman has painted a picture of universal genius. There stand
orators, philosophers and martyrs, all who have achieved pre-eminence
in any phase of life; the remarkable fact about the picture is this:
Every man who is pre-eminent for his ability was first pre-eminent for
suffering. In the foreground stands that figure of the man who was
denied the promised land, Moses. Beside him is another, feeling his
way--blind Homer. Milton is there, blind and heart-broken. Now comes
the form of one who towers above them all. What is His characteristic?
His Face is marred more than any man's. The artist might have written
under that great picture, "The Storm."
The beauties of nature come after the storm. The rugged beauty of the
mountain is born in a storm, and the heroes of life are the
storm-swept and the battle-scarred.
You have been in the storms and swept by the blasts. Have they left
you broken, weary, beaten in the valley, or have they lifted you to
the sunlit summits of a richer, deeper, more abiding manhood and
womanhood? Have they left you with more sympathy with the storm-swept
and the battle-scarred? --Selected
The wind that blows can never kill
The tree God plants;
It bloweth east, it bloweth west,
The tender leaves have little rest,
But any wind that blows is best.
The tree that God plants
Strikes deeper root, grows higher still,
Spreads greater boughs, for God's good will
Meets all its wants.
There is no storm hath power to blast
The tree God knows;
No thunderbolt, nor beating rain,
Nor lightning flash, nor hurricane;
When they are spent, it doth remain,
The tree God knows,
Through every tempest standeth fast,
And from its first day to its last
Still fairer grows. --Selected

The very hairs of your head are all numbered.

PSALMS 71:16
NO trouble is too small wherein to see the will of God for thee. Great
troubles come but seldom. Daily fretting trials, that is, what of
thyself would fret thee, may often, in God's hands, conform thee more
to His gracious will. They are the daily touches, whereby He traces on
thee the likeness of His divine will. There is nothing too slight
wherein to practice oneness with the will of God. By daily practice in
slight crosses of our own will, do we learn the lesson our Lord
taught, "Not as I will, but as Thou." All the things whereof men daily
complain may perfect thee in the will of God. The changes of the
seasons, bodily discomforts or ailments, rude words, petty slights,
little jealousies, unevenness of temper in those with whom thou
livest, misunderstandings, censures of thy faith or practice, severe
judgments, thanklessness of those thou wouldest benefit, interruptions
in what thou wouldest do, oppressiveness or distraction of thy
labors,--whatever
thou canst think of, wherein others fret themselves, and, still more,
thyself; therein thou seest how to be of one will with God.

Testing Follows Triumph
Genesis 16:1-6
Ten years had passed since God had first promised Abraham descendants,
and now three years had gone by since God had reassured Abraham of
this same thing.
Whereas in Genesis 15 Abraham is seen as a man of faith, in chapter 16
we see him as a man of unbelief. He could wait no longer for God to
fulfill His promise.
A lack of patience tends to foster unbelief. In chapter 15 Abraham
believed the Lord; in chapter 16 he hearkened unto the voice of his
wife. In chapter 15 Abraham walked after the Spirit; in chapter 16 he
walked after the energy of the flesh.
What a sad inconsistency in the life of this man of God. Only Jesus
Christ could say, "I do always those things that please him" (John
8:29).
Abraham was tested by the suggestion of a well-meaning wife. Would he
take matters out of the hand of God and act in the energy of the
flesh?
This test was the trying of the patience of his faith. Would he wait
on God to fulfill His word in His own time and way, or would Abraham's
patience give out and the flesh take over? God wanted him to have a
mature faith.
What would you have done in his situation?
"Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence
of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the
will of God, ye might receive the promise" (Heb. 10:35,36).

Sin in the Camp

Joshua rose up early in the morning, and brought Israel by their
tribes; and the tribe of Judah was taken.
Israel had just won the biggest battle in its military history. The
impregnable fortress of Jericho was destroyed by the mighty hand of
God. The inhabitants of Canaan trembled in terror before the armies of
Israel. But as is frequently the case, a great victory had made them
susceptible to a great defeat.
With the ashes of Jericho behind it, Israel now faced the next battle
in its conquest of Canaan. Situated east of Bethel, in the foothills
of the Judean highlands, was the tiny town of Ai. When spies returned
from scouting this town they reported that three thousand soldiers
were needed to seize this tiny, indefensible town. What they did not
know was that, whereas God had gone with them into battle at Jericho,
because of sin in their ranks God would not go with them in battle at
Ai. The Israelites soon learned that the difference between victory
and defeat is not military strength but the presence of the Lord.
The men of Ai routed the Israelite force, slaying thirty-six of them
and chasing the rest all the way to Shebarim. Licking their wounds,
they returned to Joshua and the elders who immediately fell on their
faces before the ark of the Lord. Joshua thought he had been abandoned
by God, but the Lord quickly revealed to him that the defeat at Ai was
due to sin in the camp of Israel. "So he rose up early in the morning,
and brought Israel by their tribes (Joshua 7:16). The tribe of Judah
was indicated. Then all the families of Judah were marched before
Joshua and Zerah pointed out as head of the sinning family. From the
family Zerahites, man by man, they were escorted into the presence
Joshua and Zabdi was taken. The household of Zabdi remained and Achan,
the son of Carmi, was accused.
Joshua bade Achan to give glory to the Lord God of Israel and make a
public confession. Achan confessed that his sin began innocently
enough when he saw the spoils of war. But immediately that simple
sight degenerated into covetousness and to actually taking the
accursed thing. But worse than that, because he thought he could get
away with his sin, he hid the beautiful garment and the silver and
gold he took in the earth beneath his tent. Although succumbing to the
temptation to sin was evil enough, Achan's greatest mistake was
thinking that he could hide that sin from God.
That we can never successfully hide our sin from God is the teaching
of Jesus' parable of the lighted candle. Luke 8:16-17 records, "No
man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or
putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candle-stick, that they
which enter in may see the light. For nothing is secret, that shall
not be made manifest; neither anything hid, that shall not be made
known and come abroad." The seeing eye of God searches even the
innermost secrets of men. No sin, however large or small, escapes the
eye of God.
Exodus 2 describes how Moses spied an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, and
he looked this way and that way, and when he saw no man watching him
he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand (Exodus 2:12). The very
next day however Moses' sin was discovered and he had to flee from the
land of the Pharaoh and spend the next forty years in Midian. Moses'
sin was unsuccessfully hidden. Beloved King David had a similar
experience. After sinning with Bathsheba and attempting to cover his
sin through the death of Uriah the Hittite, the trespass of David soon
came to light when Nathan the prophet pointed his finger in the king's
face and said, "Thou art the man" (2 Samuel 12:7). In remorse King
David said, "O God, Thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not
hid from Thee" (Psalm 69:5).
From the sad experiences of Achan and these others, let us learn well
the truth that sin is never successfully hidden. We cannot hide our
sin from God; we only can deal with it. "If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all
unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). Don't try to hide sin today; let God
forgive it instead.
MORNING HYMN
Depth of mercy! Can there be
mercy still reserved for me?
Can my God His wrath forbear
Me, the chief of sinners spare?
