The Eight of Swords

The Lord of Interference is the card that comes up to indicate
deliberate or accidental interference with the natural flow of energy.
This may come from inside ourselves, or from an outer (and possibly
malicious) source. It often signals problems with endurance, inability
to make decisions, lack of concentration on important details, and
overall disturbance.

At best, the 8 of Swords will indicate a period where nothing goes
quite the way you want it to. At worst it will indicate an obstructive
and difficult period where serious damage can be done to our material
environment, our emotional balance and our overall sense of
well-being.

When you draw this card (or are interpreting it for another person)
you need first to try to isolate the source of the problem. If it is
an inner imbalance, then you'll see cards like 7 of Cups, 7 of Swords
or 10 of Wands coming up nearby. If it is an outer force which is
causing trouble, then you're more likely to see the Tower, 9 of Swords
or a court card indicating another person.

The solution to this influence is more simple than you might at first
imagine - if you're giving yourself a hard time, then accept what is
happening and drop the project for a short time, delay making the
decision - in short, stop banging your head against the wall!
Sometimes this kind of interference is exacerbated by astrological or
lunar phases - so let 7 days pass by during which you do things which
satisfy you, which flow easily, and which help you to rest. Then come
back and tackle the original matter again.

If interference comes form an outside source, then withdraw yourself
from that source, and again, rest and do things you want to do. Return
to the issue that has been causing the problem once you have had time
to gain perspective and a little more insight.

If you are ever unfortunate enough to find the 8 of Swords coming up
to indicate a long-term problem, it will almost always be deliberate
and malicious interference from another person. If you have attracted
unwelcome attention from somebody, and you are doing nothing
whatsoever to feed their spite, then you must remove yourself as a
target. No good can come of engaging in this type of situation. And
often, when a person's barbs are no longer hitting the mark (or even
if they are, your attacker doesn't know that they are) they will find
somebody else to direct their negativity toward - there's nothing more
unsatisfying than making an enemy of somebody who completely ignores
you!

Working with the Eight of Swords

A day which is ruled by the Lord of Interference is bound to present
some difficulties. However, as with all Tarot cards, the 8 of Swords
carries with it the means of dealing with any obstacles or problems
which appear.

The first thing to recognise is that anybody's life has the occasional
bump - we would never get anywhere if it did not. Bumps can be caused
by all kinds of different things - people, our own attitudes,
astrological influences...the possibilities for interference are
boundless.

Make sure you're not going around in circles attempting to make a
decision through a sense of duty or guilt. That often causes problems
when this card is around.

Finally keep your eyes open for anyone else who may be deliberately
stepping in your path. Often when somebody interferes, merely
recognising what they are doing robs their actions of any power over
us.

However - whatever the source of the problem is, the message of the 8
of Swords is clear. Don't rush to fight with things that are not
currently going your way - you'll almost certainly fail. Go and find
something else to do instead. There will be a better time to deal with
the things that are in your way today.

Don't waste your energy hacking away at something that may be better
cleared up tomorrow. Don't frustrate yourself by banging on a door
that just will not open. Rely on the idea that things will ease off,
and that you will deal with them better for not having wasted hours on
them today!

Affirmation: I skilfully direct my energies into the things that will
make most difference.

EIGHT OF SWORDS

Attribution - Jupiter in Gemini

Swords is the suit of the intellect. It represents air, authority,
thought, reason, justice, truth and ethical principles.

The eight represents a yin energy associated with personal power,
advancement, reaping the harvest, material gain, regeneration, setting
new priorities, new ways forward, re-organization, control.

Rider-Waite Imagery

The suit of swords is related to the element of air. It concerns
matters of thoughts, ideas and the mind.

A woman stands bound & blindfolded. She is surrounded by 8 swords
stuck point down in the ground. There are three on the left side of
the card and five on the right side of the card. The ground is brown
and there are pools of water. Her feet are partially on the ground and
partially in water. The woman has black hair that is windswept and
almost reaches her shoulders. She has a blindfold and has fabric
wrapped four times around her body. She is wearing a red dress and a
brown undergarment with a round neck. The dress has long sleeves and
goes down to the tops of her shoes. The bottom of the skirt is draped
and slightly windblown to the right. Her shoes are brown. Behind the
woman is a pool of water. There is a mountain in the distance on the
left side on the card. In the background on the right is a tall hill
with a castle on it. The hill is gray and the roofs are red.

On This Day:

Wednesday January 18, 2012

This is the 18th day of the year, with 348 days remaining in 2012.

Fact of the Day: sounds

Over the course of the millions of years that hominids evolved into
homo sapiens, the human brain's ability to process sounds was critical
to survival. Creatures that responded appropriately enjoyed greater
probability for survival of themselves and their progeny. Sounds are a
mixture of audible frequencies. Some sounds are intrinsically soothing
and rest-inducing: gurgling water, the soft cooing/humming of human
voices, the low cackle of friendly fire. Other sounds cause the brain
to release chemicals that induce stress response: the prolonged
screech of a child or animal in pain or discomfort, or the screech of
claws (bear, big cat, dire wolf) against a hard surface. These sounds
of distress cause the individual to make addressing the stimulus a
primary consideration, dropping everything else to flee or change the
situation. On the level of human physiology, the human ear is designed
to accommodate a broad range of frequencies and volumes. When certain
sounds represent osci llations beyond the normal range of daily
hearing, the result is physical pain in the inner ear. Blackboard
screeching involves oscillations beyond the normal range of human
hearing, just as jackhammers are beyond the normal range of
comfortable volume. The result is that an individual orients to the
sounds with an appropriate physical response.

This week's theme

Miscellaneous words

This week's words

sagacity

A.Word.A.Day

with Anu Garg

Why do you learn new words? For some, it's the joy of discovering new
and unusual specimens in the language and the stories behind them. For
others, it's to improve their vocabulary, whether for college or work.

Sometimes readers write to say, "I'll never have a chance to use these
words!" You will. As you can see from the usage examples taken from
newspapers, magazines, and books, words featured in AWAD are not from
a museum. They're words that are in current use, even though you may
not read them as often.

Still, we take the point. What some are looking for are more practical
words: words they can use in an office memo or in a term paper; words
they are more likely to come across in a trade report or college exam.

This week we'll offer you five such practical words. Go ahead, employ
them, put them into practice.

sagacity

PRONUNCIATION:

(suh-GAS-i-tee)

MEANING:

noun: Keen judgment or wisdom.

ETYMOLOGY:

From Latin sagacitas (wisdom), from sagire (to perceive keenly).
Ultimately from the Indo-European root sag- (to seek out), which is
also the source of seek, ransack, ramshackle, forsake, and hegemony.
Earliest documented use: 1607.

USAGE:

"In a moment of odd sagacity, Sarah Palin lamented that the contest
for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination had become just
another reality television show."

Donald Mitchell; Palin Pulls a Palin; Los Angeles Times; Oct 9, 2011.

Explore "sagacity" in the Visual Thesaurus.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

I prayed for freedom for twenty years, but received no answer until I
prayed with my legs. -Frederick Douglass, Former slave, abolitionist,
editor, and orator (1817-1895)

The worthless word for the day is: crowkeeper

[crow + keeper]

obs. : a person employed to scare off crows

We'll have no Cupid hoodwink'd with a scarf,

Bearing a Tartar's painted bow of lath,

Scaring the ladies like a crowkeeper..

- Wm Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet (1597)

It was the technology of the scarecrow, presumably, that made the
crowkeeper obsolete.
