This is the day that you are alive. This is the moment that you are in.
All your hopes and dreams are real right now. All your
possibilities are ready to be lived.

Everything you've ever done has led you to this point. You are
more fully alive, aware, experienced and prepared than you have ever
been.

What matters is not how old or how young you may think you are.
What matters is making the most of this moment you now have.

What matters is not how much or how little you may think you
have, how fairly or unfairly you may think life has treated you. What
matters is that you make the most of who you are.

This is it. This is your moment to fill with the best you can imagine.

Live it with love, with purpose and joy.

People will forget what you did,
But people will never forget how you made them feel"

* Why I Speak In Tongues*

*1 CORINTHIANS 14:18 NIV
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.*

*Speaking in tongues is speaking in a language you have never
learned. It is a supernatural act possible only by the help of
the indwelling Holy Spirit.*

*MARK 16:17 NKJ
17 "And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name
they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;*

*It is estimated that today over 500 million Christians, in
every country on earth, do speak in tongues. It started on the
day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2:4.*

*ACTS 2:4 NKJ
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to
speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.*

*Every believer can speak in tongues, if they desire. It is a
free gift available to all believers.*

*1 CORINTHIANS 14:5 NKJ
5 I wish you all spoke with tongues . . . .*

*I think this doctrine has been so controversial because the
devil is against it, knowing how helpful it is to believers.*

*I have no desire to argue with anyone. I do desire to see
everyone enjoy all the benefits God has freely provided for us.*

*I speak in tongues because:*

** It allows me to communicate with God better. There are things
my mind just cannot put into words which I can express through
the spirit by praying in tongues.*

*1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 NKJ
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to
God . . . .*

** It builds me up spiritually and refreshes me.*

*1 CORINTHIANS 14:4 NKJ
4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself . . . .*

*There are other benefits. I hope you are enjoying them, too.*

*SAY THIS: Thank you Lord that I can speak in tongues.*

When you find yourself getting angry or resentful
it is natural to start blaming. First, you yell;
then the argument escalates into damaging
accusations.

Be aware that when you do this, it only perpetuates
more hurt and anger, To avoid painful words, stop and
think about how you feel and why. This will dissolve the
negative energy right away, and help you to move to a
place where you can focus on what is most important.

After you're clear about how you feel, focus on your
needs. Ask yourself what you need to feel better
about the situation. It may be as simple as a phone call.

Next time anger strikes, take a moment to focus on your
feelings and needs. Share them in a non-threatening
way, to replace hurt and anger with happiness.

*Daily Devotional
*Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based on the book of
Proverbs in the Bible. * * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:*

*Proverbs 21:22 (KJV):
**22 A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty, and casteth down the
strength of the confidence thereof.**
**
**Proverbs 21:22 (AMP):
22 A wise man scales the city walls of the mighty and brings down the
stronghold in which they trust. *

*Thoughts for the Day:*

This scripture in *Proverbs* tells us that a wise man can take a city and
bring down the mighty stronghold of any enemy. When he accomplishes this,
he destroys the trust the enemy had in his stronghold. We can apply this
analogy to the "spiritual warfare" of the saints the Bible speaks about.
What is "spiritual warfare?"

Spiritual warfare has become a subject much discussed and preached among
Christians today. At the present hour, the Holy Spirit is emphasizing this
subject to the church. Warfare means waging an assault against an enemy.
God and His people are at war against Satan and his followers. Since this
warfare is in the invisible spiritual realm, it is called "spiritual
warfare." We must have an understanding of the spiritual realm and be able
to recognize the enemy and his tactics, if we are to obtain victory.

The place to begin our warfare is on a personal level. Unless we're
victorious in our personal lives, we'll never be able to help others gain
their needed victories, much less be able to battle spiritually for our
cities and nation. We must learn to rule and reign in our individual lives
by casting down the flesh or carnal desires and yielding to Christ in all
things.

To win our spiritual battles, we must be aggressive against our enemy,
Satan. We cannot be passive. We must take the initiative. Ours must be the
offensive position, rather than the defensive. Truly God is calling His
people to rise up and war against their enemy. We're in a war. Note how
the Bible describes our warfare:

*2 Corinthians 10:3-6:
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (for the
weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the
pulling down of strongholds;) casting down imaginations, and every high
thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into
captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; and having in a
readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled. *

This passage points out that our warfare is a spiritual one. Then the next
verse asks, *"Do ye look on things after the outward appearance?" (2
Corinthians 10:7a). *That's a good question: Are we looking on things after
the outward appearance? If so, we're missing the reality that we live in a
spiritual realm with an ongoing battle in that realm. We cannot be relying
upon the appearance of things in the natural because it is the spirit realm
that is influencing the natural realm. Thus, even though we're flesh and
blood, we're not to walk after the flesh, but rather after the spirit. *"That
the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after
the flesh, but after the Spirit" (Romans 8:4)*. God wants His people to see
with the eyes of the spirit and not look after the outward appearance.

If we walk close to Him, totally yielded, He will give us discernment to
see in the spirit realm. Then we can truly understand what's going on.
Looking at things with the natural eye will never suffice. * "But as it is
written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the
heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth
all things, yea, the deep things of God. For what man knoweth the things of
a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God
knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit
of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things
that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the
words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth;
comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man receiveth
not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him:
neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1
Corinthians 2:9-14).*

Spiritual discernment is crucial. As God gives us spiritual eyes, we'll see
things correctly. For example, in the church, we'll see one another in the
proper light as brothers and sisters in Christ. Instead of focusing on one
another's faults and shortcomings, we'll be set to help each other overcome
any weaknesses. We'll help through supportive prayer and by showing love
and kindness to one another. Spiritual discernment will open up our
awareness of the spirit realm. What is the spirit realm? It is a realm made
up of two kingdoms, one of darkness and one of light. While God rules the
kingdom of light, Satan is master over the kingdom of darkness. We can do
mighty things for God, as we take the enemy's strongholds and bring them
down through prayer and fasting.

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Heavenly Father, Help me to be a strong warrior for You and not
shrink back from spiritual warfare. You told us to "submit unto You, and
resist the devil and he would flee" in James 4. So, first Lord, I voice my
submission to You, to do Your will. Now, we know the devil flees at Your
Word ,so I say to the enemy: "Satan, I resist you in the name of Jesus and
command you to leave me, my family and this ministry. You are a defeated
foe, and you have no authority in my life, so therefore you must flee with
your temptation, your division, your sickness, and every evil thing you
would try to bring against me and those that I am praying for. I declare
that no weapon formed against me shall prosper! Be gone in the name of
Jesus!" Thank You, Lord, that You gave us victory over the devil and all
of his evil plans. Amen.*

January 13
Psalm 6:1
O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
Child experts have discovered that one of the most traumatic
experiences children face is to have their parents scold or punish
them in front of their friends. The humiliation that accompanies the
punishment can leave deep emotional scars. The actual punishment pales
in comparison with the embarrassment the child suffers. Most children
would rather face any penalty other than public chastisement.

Just as loving parents guard and protect their children's dignity, so
our Lord protects the dignity of His children. To believe that God
would punish us in such a way as to rob us of our self-esteem is
ridiculous. God would never do such a thing. God does not deal with us
in hot anger, for He loves us too much. He watches us closely, guiding
us gently, and regarding us as valuable creations. We need never
believe that God has punished us in order to humiliate us. His own Son
was humbled by men and women, but the Lord of all life lifted Him up,
and He will lift us up, also.

Prayer: Though I face trials and problems, I know that You are not to
blame, Lord. You give so much, and You help me in times when I most
need You. Have patience with me, God, and help me to grow. Amen.

If you really want it, you will have it. If it means enough to you, it
will happen.
For if you really want it, you will find a way. You'll stop
making excuses and start making it real.

The obstacles you encounter are not there to prevent you from
reaching your goal. The obstacles are there to make sure you really
want it.

When you really want it, you'll find a way around, under, above
or through each one of those obstacles. And as you do, you'll be
literally creating the value of what you intend to achieve.

When you really want it enough, it is in many ways already
yours. Full and complete attainment then becomes a matter of going
through the motions and following a path that leads surely there.

Decide what you really want, and be careful what you decide
upon. For when you truly want it, you will make it so.

him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." John
15:5

The vine is Christ, we are the branches. The Holy Spirit is the sap
that runs through the vine into the branches. The branches live, grow,
and bear fruit not by struggles and effort but by simply abiding. The
Christian life is a life of abiding in Christ. How does the branch
bear fruit? Not by continuous effort for sunshine and air; not by
striving to produce beautiful blossoms and lush green leaves. No, it
simply abides in the vine, in quiet union with the vine, with no
effort on its part, the branch produces blossoms and fruit, the
natural result of feeding off the vine. A Christian who has the Holy
Spirit flowing through his life produces the fruits of the Spirit. Our
job then is to fully concentrate our thoughts and affections on
Christ, to abide in him. This is no easy task, by nature we want to be
doing, accomplishing, working but as Hebrews 4:11 tells us, "let us
labour therefore to enter into that rest". Our job is to work at
resting in Him,
surrendering to Him, abiding in the vine. For when we completely
surrender ourselves to Him, the sap will flow through us and fruitage
will appear. So let us abide in the vine, setting our hearts on Christ
that we might bear fruit to His glory and honor.
Help us to abide in you, Jesus. May Your Holy Spirit flow through us,
Father, that we might thrive and flourish for Your glory and honor.
Help us remain connected to the vine that we might bring forth
abundant fruit. Help us to submit ourselves and, in doing so, flourish
for you. We ask this in the name of the true Vine, Jesus. Amen

Pray About EverythingCall to me in times of trouble. I will save you,
and you will honor me. Psalm 50:15

Want to worry less? Then pray more!

Rather than look forward in fear—in worry—look to God. Jesus taught
people that it was necessary for them to pray consistently and never
quit.

Paul told believers, "Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind
and a thankful heart."

James said, "Are any among you suffering? Keep on praying about it!"
Regarding prayer, the Bible never blushes. Rather than worry about
anything, "pray about everything!"

Everything? Diaper changes and dates? Business meetings and stopped
up bathtubs?
Schedules and flight delays? Procrastinations and prognostications?
Really?

Pray about everything!

Devotional For Dieters 1/13

January 13

Proverbs 21:21
He that followeth after righteousness and mercy findeth life,
righteousness, and honour.

Long-distance runners train themselves to think of the finish line.
They visualize it just ahead. They say this keeps them from wanting to
give up somewhere along the way. The reward of crossing the finish
line is worth more than any pain or discomfort on the way. Dieters can
learn from this. Instead of dwelling on how hungry we are, or how much
we long for rich foods, we should continually think in terms of the
rewards that await us at the end. Christians follow Christ with hope
of a heavenly reward. Faith means we await something yet to come.
Dieting means we live in the hope of trimming down and looking fit.

Today's thought: The reward of our diet is greater than the sacrifice!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has
passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Augustine, the famed theologian and philosopher, was a very carnal
young man, often frequenting houses of prostitution. So when he came
to know Christ as his Savior, he was dramatically transformed and
changed by the power of God.

One day he was walking down one of the streets in his home town and a
shady lady that he had known previously was standing on the street
corner. She saw Augustine and said, "Augustine! Augustine! It is I!"
So Augustine immediately turned the other direction and said, "Yes,
but it is not I."

You see, when you become a believer in Christ, you are radically
changed from the inside out. That's because Jesus takes your sin away,
liberating you from its bondage, and has given you the Spirit of God
to live inside of you. The result is that your old self is dead and
your new self enables you to live a life pleasing to God.

God can give you a new heart and a new life if you're in Christ. And
as a Christian, you can make a commitment to holiness and godliness
because of that new life. So if you've been made new in Christ, live
your life focused on bringing glory to Him!

IN CHRIST, GOD HAS TAKEN AWAY YOUR OLD SELF AND GIVEN YOU A NEW LIFE.
SO LIVE YOUR LIFE IN FREEDOM FROM THE BONDAGE OF SIN AND GIVE THE
GLORY TO GOD!

January 13, 2012 *[image: Daily Devotional] * *Another kingdom**
**Then Jesus went to all the towns and villages, teaching in their
synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom, and healing every
disease and every sickness. Matthew 9:35, HCSB*

While we focus our thoughts on the kingdom of God, we must not forget that
there exists in the universe another kingdom - the kingdom of Satan. The
Bible shows us that in ages past there was just one kingdom, the kingdom of
God. But, through the rebellion of an angel named Lucifer (now known as
Satan), another kingdom was established over which the Prince of Darkness
rules.

Every person since Adam (with the single exception of Jesus Christ) comes
under the dominion of Satan and is, in fact, classified as a citizen of the
devil's kingdom (Eph 2:1-2). When, through conversion, we become followers
of the Lord Jesus Christ, we become citizens of the kingdom of God (Col
1:13).

Once we receive this new citizenship, whether we realize it or not, we are
thrust into the front line of the age-long conflict which has existed
between God and Satan, and we become participators in the Almighty's plan
to bring about Satan's defeat and to bring the universe once again under
the control of God and His kingdom.

Standing as we do on the cutting edge between the kingdom of God and the
kingdom of Satan, the Almighty has given us the most powerful weapon in all
the armories of heaven. That weapon is prayer. Our citizenship in God's
kingdom entitles and enables us to pray: "Thy kingdom come." And when said
with sincerity and trust, those words spell out every time they are spoken
the ultimate triumph of the kingdom of God.

*Daily Prayer*
Father, I am utterly amazed when I realize You have not only taken me out
of Satan's kingdom, but You are using my prayer, when it is in line with
Your pattern, to demolish his kingdom and re-establish Yours. Help me
participate with all my might. Amen.

*John 1:43-51<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#134d5c7790fd1948_verses>
(Click
to view Bible text below.)*

One who pushes people from behind with threats and a fear-based mindset
cannot logically be a leader. If you are to follow, you must have some
advance knowledge as to what the person who is to lead you is all about. If
you chose to follow someone who is not genuine in nature, the road ahead
will be very rough indeed.

Philip knew about Jesus before he met him. What a great surprise it must
have been for him to hear Jesus say, "Follow me." Philip knew who was
calling him and went to his friend Nathanael who couldn't quite believe
what Philip was saying. "Come and see," says Philip. When he went to see
Jesus he was received with friendly foreknowledge: "...an Israelite in whom
there is no deceit."

"I saw you under the fig tree" can probably be described as a euphemism for
someone who often sits contemplating wisdom and knowledge. Yup. Jesus can
use someone like that too. In an age when some Christians have disdain for
the intellectual pursuit of biblical truth, we should encourage all
questions as if they were entwined with the breath of God's Holy Spirit.

*Remind us, O Lord, that when you call us you also grant us strength to
perform the tasks we encounter. Thus your will is done and we grow in faith
observing your power at work. Amen. *

*John 1:43-51* (NRSV)

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to
him, "Follow me."

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom
Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from
Nazareth."

46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip
said to him, "Come and see."

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, "Here is
truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"

48 Nathanael asked him, "Where did you come to know me?" Jesus answered, "I
saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you."

49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of
Israel!"

50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under
the fig tree? You will see greater things than these."

51 And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

*January 13, 2012*

*Jude*

*Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James... Jude 1:1
(NKJV) *

*Yesterday we looked at the life of James, the half-brother of Jesus.
Today, we'll fix our focus on yet another half-brother of Jesus...Jude. *

*Jude's identity as a half-sibling is well established because the crowds
refer to Jesus having a brother named Juda, which is a common
transliteration of Jude, in Mark 6:3. Also, Jude calls himself James'
brother as he begins his letter, which is included in the New Testament. *

*Here's what's especially interesting about Jude and his letter: He tells
his readers that he originally intended to write to them about one thing
but decided to switch gears and write about something else: *

*Beloved, while I was very diligent to write to you concerning our common
salvation, I found it necessary to write to you exhorting you to contend
earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints.
Jude 1:3 (NKJV) *

*So we can picture Jude, poised and ready to encourage a group of
Christians about their salvation in Jesus. He's setting out to comfort and
console, but then something grabs hold of his heart - he recognizes that
there's a more important matter at hand. More and more fake followers are
infiltrating the Body of Christ and infecting it with unrighteousness.
What's needed is a word of warning, which is what Jude proceeds to pen for
his original audience and for us. *

*We can't help but appreciate Jude's sensitivity to the situation and for
stepping up and doing what had to be done. It would have been easy to
elaborate on the good news of salvation. But he was willing to warn, which
can often be an unpopular and difficult thing to do. *

*Oftentimes, God will call us to do something that's more difficult than we
originally intended. When He does, we need to remember Jude's willingness
to warn, and we need to be just as willing to obey the Lord's leading on
our lives instead of rigidly clinging to our original plans. Be sensitive,
be flexible, and be willing to do what's difficult.*

*Think About It? What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?
*

*The Oak Tree*

*Isaiah 55:8-10, NIV: "'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are
your ways my ways,' declares the LORD. 'As the heavens are higher than the
earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your
thoughts.'"*

*"Timber," the man shouted, after withdrawing his axe from a last
well-placed chop. Within a few seconds, after a few loud snaps and pops,
the massive oak fell to the ground. "Why would you chop down such a
beautiful tree?" someone asked. "Because," he replied, "I have another use
for it." Like with the oak, why would God bring someone to what seems to be
one thing, only to change the plans? Maybe because that was never His plan
to begin with. Where we might say, "Ah, look how God has made me;" God
says, "My child, we've only begun." As we reflect on our lives, it might be
easy to assume we know what God is making some of us to be. But, could it
be that God spends many years making us an oak tree, not so we will remain
an oak tree, but so we will finally be ready to be made into what He had
actually planned for us all along?*

understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your
paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6 Many believers are living under a
spiritual illusion rather than in the reality of a personal
relationship with the Lord. They conclude that their whole
relationship with God, with Jesus Christ as their Savior, and with the
indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, is wrapped up in an "act once
performed" when they were saved, rather than in a "life to be lived"
after their salvation in the power of the Holy Spirit. Their attitude
is that having found Him as Savior, they no longer need to seek Him.
Being born again is the BEGINNING of our spiritual journey. We need to
grow in grace and in the knowledge of His Word, becoming mature in our
spiritual life.

David's psalms ring out with the cry of the seeker and resound with
the glad song of the finder. Our beloved hymns of the faith were born
in the fires of trial and adversity by those who found strength,
comfort, and hope in an all-sufficient Savior. They went through those
devastating encounters daring to trust Him. The reality of our faith
is born when we cast all our care upon Him. It is then we see His
mighty hand intercede for us in ways that are completely beyond us. It
is a life of trust and obedience in a Living Savior, the Sovereign of
our life.

If we are to mature spiritually and come to a deeper experience in
knowing God, altering our circumstances is not God's first priority.
His first concern is to ALTER OUR HEARTS and then He will enable us to
deal with the needs on the outside. He wants us to learn to lean on
Him and to trust Him in our trials, not to seek deliverance from the
trials. It is in the trials that we learn to trust, abandon ourselves
to Him, and come to know Him as never before.

Can there be a more blessed experience than to be confronted with
devastating circumstances, to pray and trust Him, and to see Him do
what no other one can do? We will cry out with David, "Bless the Lord
O my soul and all that is within me; bless His holy name." We begin to
know and live in the reality of our faith, applying what we believe to
every phase of our life. Our spiritual journey is one of "becoming" in
the image of His Son. It is the process of His plan for each of us.

He gave His life for us, that He might give His life to us, so that He
might live His life through us. Paul said, "I consider everything but
loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my
Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them as
rubbish that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a
righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes
from God and is by faith. I want to know Christ and the power of his
resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings, becoming like him
in his death, to attain to the resurrection from the dead."

From commitment to Christ, we follow with perseverance and pursue with
purpose, "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is
ahead, [we] press toward the goal to win the prize for which Christ
has called [us] heavenward in Christ."

The Wings of God's Love

The Wings of God's Love

On wings of God's love my
soul takes flight;
I am lifted to new and
glorious heights!

A new feeling of freshness
soars through my being;
As new realms of His glory
my spiritual eyes are seeing.

The love of my Father brings
pure delight,
For He tells me I am precious
in His site!

Visions of His glory come
into view,
While my spirit and soul He
lifts and renews!

No evil can enter this haven
of rest,
I am safe and secure and so
wonderfully blest!

On the wings of His love above
all earthly trials;
No evil can enter to deceive and
defile.

The love of my Father has fully
captured my heart,
And from the wings of His love
I will never depart!

Soon I shall take wings as the
eagle and fly,
Into His waiting arms high
in the sky!

Are You Ready for Bigger Things?

You...enlarged me when I was in distress.
Psalms 4:1 (Amplified Bible)

Did you know that the hermit crab looks for a shell that fits him,
then lives in it until he outgrows it? At that point he has to scurry
along the ocean floor and find a bigger one; it's a process that
repeats itself throughout his entire life.

Are you clinging to something that no longer fits you, just because
it's easy and familiar? David said, You... freed me when I was hemmed
in and enlarged me when I was in distress. To develop and grow
spiritually you must be willing to move out of your comfort zone and
deal with a little distress. What worked for you yesterday may not
work today.

Maybe it's a job you've outgrown, a relationship you need to
re-examine or a behavior you need to change. Regardless of what it is,
never become so settled that you can't let go and move on when you
need to. Patience and persistence are admirable, but they won't work
in situations you've outgrown.

Instead of hanging in and trying harder, at certain points you have to
stop and ask yourself, Is this situation good for me? If you're not
sure, ask God for an understanding mind [to]...know the difference
between... right and... wrong (1 Kings 3:9 TLB). His Word says, If you
need wisdom... ask Him, and He will gladly give it to you. (James 1:5
NLT).

When God says it's time to move on, it's because there's another shell
out there that will fit you even better. But you can't take occupancy
until you vacate the old one. So how about it, are you ready for
bigger things?

GOD BLESS YOU!

"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon
you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give
you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

If you haven't done so, why not ask Jesus to forgive your sins and to
come into your heart to be your Savior and Lord? Just pray the
following prayer: "O God, I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sin and I
am willing to turn from it. I receive Jesus as my Savior; I confess
Him as my Lord. From now on, I want to follow Him in the fellowship
of His Church. In Jesus' name. Amen"

"Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects; therefore do not despise
the chastening of the Almighty."
God's Chastening
Lou Holtz, former head football coach of the Fighting Irish of Notre
Dame, is legendary in his adherence to discipline. In an interview
with The Saturday Evening Post in 1989, he was quoted as saying, "When
it comes to discipline here, we ask three questions: Will it make him
a better man? A better student? A better athlete? If the answer is
yes, we make him do it. The next step is up to him. An individual has
a choice when you discipline him: either to become bitter or better."
Judging by his squad's record, both on and off the field, Lou Holtz's
charges for the most part became better men.
Job's friends failed to understand God in many ways, but Eliphaz the
Temanite was right in this respect. God's discipline is never meant to
destroy but ultimately to bring joy. The word in this verse for
"happy" (also translated "blessed") literally means "to walk
straight." God's correction is given to keep His people from wandering
away from the straight path and getting into situations that bring
pain and heartache. Those who submit to His guidance will avoid many
of the experiences that bring unhappiness to others.
God's discipline doesn't always feel good, especially if we fight
against it. The writer of Hebrews confesses, "Now no chastening seems
to be joyful for the present, but grievous" (12:11). Yet the writer
continues, "Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of
righteousness to those who have been trained by it." A right
relationship with God ultimately leads to a happiness that makes
everything else seem insignificant.
Are you undergoing the chastening of God right now? If so, look ahead
to the fruit He will bring out of this difficulty. Remember that God
is seeking to correct your course so you can avoid future pitfalls
that will bring you even greater pain. Let Him have His way in your
life even if, at the moment, it's hard to bear. You'll be glad you
did!
Pain now means gain later.

Hedged In

"Reckon it nothing but joy...whenever you find yourself hedged in by
the various trials, be assured that the testing of your faith leads to
power of endurance" (James 1:2-3) Weymouth
God hedges in His own that He may preserve them, but oftentimes they
only see the wrong side of the hedge, and so misunderstand His
dealings. It was so with Job (Job 3:23). Ah, but Satan knew the value
of that hedge! See his testimony in chapter 1:10. Through the leaves
of every trial there are chinks of light to shine through. Thorns do
not prick you unless you lean against them, and not one touches
without His knowledge. The words that hurt you, the letter which gave
you pain, the cruel wound of your dearest friend, shortness of
money--are all known to Him, who sympathizes as none else can and
watches to see, if, through all, you will dare to trust Him wholly.
"The hawthorn hedge that keeps us from intruding,
Looks very fierce and bare
When stripped by winter, every branch protruding
Its thorns that would wound and tear.
"But spring-time comes; and like the rod that budded,
Each twig breaks out in green;
And cushions soft of tender leaves are studded,
Where spines alone were seen,
"The sorrows, that to us seem so perplexing,
Are mercies kindly sent
To guard our wayward souls from sadder vexing,
And greater ills prevent.
"To save us from the pit, no screen of roses
Would serve for our defense,
The hindrance that completely interposes
Stings back like thorny fence.
"At first when smarting from the shock, complaining
Of wounds that freely bleed,
God's hedges of severity us paining,
May seem severe indeed.
"But afterwards, God's blessed spring-time cometh,
And bitter murmurs cease;
The sharp severity that pierced us bloometh,
And yields the fruits of peace.
"Then let us sing, our guarded way thus wending
Life's hidden snares among,
Of mercy and of judgment sweetly blending;
Earth's sad, but lovely song."
