The Queen of Disks
As the Queen of the Suit most connected to the home environment,
families, materiality and fecundity, the woman represented by the
Queen of Disks will most likely be a person whose attention centres
upon the family environment. Here, she will excel, gaining a great
deal of pleasure from providing a secure haven where she and others
can feel cosseted and cared for.
In modern times the qualities for which this Queen stands have tended
to be devalued and downgraded ('I'm only a housewife'). This causes
difficulties for the woman who feels most fulfilled expending her
energies in a home situation, working with her family and a close
circle of friends.
Yet the contribution that this sort of work makes to the lives of
anyone who comes into contact with it cannot be underestimated. We all
want to feel welcome and warm in our own homes. We want to feel
nurtured and secure. So perhaps it's time to re-instate the Queen of
Disks to her rightful place - Regent to the Empress, and important to
everybody. Furthermore, maybe we need to invoke our own caring
qualities more readily so that we all pour our unique energies into
our domestic surroundings.
If the Queen of Disks is ill-dignified in a reading, she will
generally have lost sight of her position - or, perhaps, is being
taken for granted by others. At that point the weaker side of her
personality will show through. She may become dependent and clingy,
believing herself to be unable to stand alone. She might manipulate by
adopting a passive victim's role.
Though usually the type of woman indicated by the Queen of Disks is a
gentle soul, when angered she can become a fierce enemy, particularly
where she sees injustice done to her family and friends. She's loyal
and willing to help, rooted in the practical aspects of life.
Her concept of spirituality centres on the nourishing aspects of her
personality - she is therefor a facilitator, quietly assisting others
on their journey, though often her contribution will go unnoticed.
She is often interested in, and involved with, the healing arts, being
a willing and generous healer. When she is ambitious it is usually for
others, again in her facilitator role. She maintains a strong link
with Nature, loving plants, trees and animals.
Working with the Queen of Disks
A day ruled by the Queen of Disks is one where we need to turn our
attention to the practical roots of our security and sense of domestic
contentment. This Queen provides us with a stable foundation from
which to move forth into the often turbulent forces of life.
When we feel safe, and at peace; when we know our home for a haven;
when we have a place to rest and regenerate, we function much better
as human beings. We are more tolerant, less fearful, more
compassionate, less grasping.
So on one of these days, we must make a point of doing something to
love ourselves in our home environment, and also something to make
that environment more welcoming, more attuned to our own sense of
peacefulness.
We can do this in many different ways. For ourselves, we can take half
an hour or an hour out to do the things which make us feel at peace.
We could do some work in the garden, or take a long relaxing bath, or
cook ourselves something special to eat, or listen to music with a
whole head, or whatever else makes us feel gentle and timeless and
happy.
For our homes, we can buy something that makes things more
comfortable, or we can re-arrange something so it's more pleasing, or
we can clean out that cupboard that has been gathering cobwebs for
ages.
The key here is to spend time and energy both on yourself, and your
home - and to do both of these things with the intent to harmonise
more thoroughly, to feel more rested and centred, to make more of a
haven than we already have.
Remember - our intentions, when coupled with actions, have a powerful
influence on our environment. They create new streams of energy which
will manifest. And since the Queen of Disks is about the home and
family, and about our view of ourselves in that environment, on her
day we must nourish those things in order to put them in their
rightful place in life.
In creating a happy environment on the physical level, we become
empowered to create a happy environment within ourselves, too. And
that's a very nourishing experience.
Affirmation: My heart's haven surrounds me always

On This Day:
Friday January 20, 2012
This is the 20th day of the year, with 346 days remaining in 2012.
Fact of the Day: golf holes
The 18 holes come from the renovations of the Old Course at St.
Andrews, the ostensible first golf course from 1400's. In 1848 or so,
with the invention of the new, cheap, golf ball, the Brits went golf
mad, like the tennis buffs in the 1970's and the joggers in the
'1980's. They were churning up the Old Course something fierce,
playing the 9 holes both directions, (this was way it was done, up,
then back same course.) So decisions were made to alleviate the
problem. First thought was to extend the course and bring it around
into a circle, ending at beginning. This was met with great uproar and
consternation. So the additional 8 greens were added by increasing the
width and people go up "the back nine" and back the additional. Then
George V saw what they had done and had an 18 hole course built at
Richmond Palace, with the object in mind to provide the people who
couldn't afford the private clubs a golf course. Old Course at St.
Andrews 18 hole, this Prince's and the subseque nt Duke's courses are
part of the heart of the British people.

The Two of Cups speak of emotional engagements. These may be in the
form of deep connections made with our lovers, friends, family,
partners, or co-workers.
To be sure, these connections are complimentary as if two halves are
coming together to form a perfect union.
This coming together is a new beginning and one filled with promise,
hope and trust. There is a prickling at the back of our neck at the
freshness and vitality a new relationship brings us. There is an
intensity of our focus upon the sparkly energy of high emotion as we
connect more deeply with our unifying contra.
There is also a sense of vulnerability here - as if we have to remove
a mask in order to tap into that promising union the Two of Cups
represent. All bets are off, we must be at our most exposed in order
to reap the fullest benefit of this new connection with another or
ourselves.
On an esoteric level, this card is also symbolic of bringing together
the dualistic nature of self into a harmonized whole.
To more clearly grasp this concept, consider the associations
connected to this card:
Number Two
The Suit of Cups
The Element of Water
The Realm of Emotions
A few symbol meanings on for this card:

Caduceus: Varied in its meaning, the Caduceus symbol meanings deal
with balance, health, duality (union of opposites), proper moral
conduct, protection and cosmic energy. Seen on the two of cups, the
caduceus bodes well for new partnerships, and serves as a message that
with honor and respect to balance, new relationships shall be
fruitful. It may also indicate the querent is joining forces with
another party in order to facilitate healing.

Wreath: Wreaths have long been a symbol of victory ever since the
first ancient games upon mount Olympus where the victor was crowned in
laurels (hence the term "resting on his laurels"). A sweet smelling
laurel wreath is also a symbol of protection, peace and purification
and is associated with the god Apollo. It is a message that the favor
of the Gods is upon us, and that we shall be the victor in this stage
of our lives. Click here to view all other Rider-Waite Tarot cards

Some questions the Two of Cups asks us:
Am I open to new beginnings? New Relationships?
Am I evolved enough to see the other person's point of view without bias?
What connections can I make between my thoughts and my actions?

The Two of Cups
And here we have the Lord of Love, a card of bliss, deep joyous love
reciprocated fully and with great enthusiasm, a card of
reconciliations and new growth! Here we see harmonious and contented
exchanges of emotion, which vibrate with an ecstatic undercurrent of
passion and heat.
Because this card is a reflective and receptive one, there's an issue
that people sometimes forget when reading it - to be truly loved,
deeply treasured, valued highly by others, we must first and foremost
strive to feel those things for ourselves. When we work toward loving
ourselves, we hold our inner nature in high regard, treating it with
deference and proper respect. When we see ourselves in that light,
other people cannot help but respond to our personal sense of value.
Furthermore, when we work to love ourselves, we release so many areas
of self-doubt and uncertainty that we become infused by a new energy -
and this we can lavish on others. The 2 of Cups is about engaging in a
caring and tender fashion with our own needs, first and foremost.
It isn't so much about achieving self-love, as about, in every single
day of our lives, striving towards self-love. That action leads us
into a positive, self-supportive and accepting approach to life. And
also, when we stop wasting energy telling ourselves what's wrong with
us, we have lots more energy to enjoy being who we are.
When this card comes up in a reading, if it relates to the inner
journey, then it tells you to put your attention in the moment, to
leave the past behind, and to let yourself be free to enjoy everything
that comes your way.
If it relates to outer events, it may point to a forthcoming
reconciliation in a relationship where there has been pain and
disappointment - this need not be a love affair, it can cover many
different types of loving relationship.
It might point up a new relationship which has recently begun and
which will grow into a deep and lasting friendship or affair.
And finally, it may reassure you that the meaningful relationship in
your life will strengthen and grow, developing into exactly what you
need it to be!!
Working with the Two of Cups
As I said when defining this card, the most important aspect of the
Lord of Love is that we learn to develop self-love, self-trust and
self- reliance. Hopefully there are many of you who can think, with
confidence, I've done this.
And for those of you who can, a day ruled by the 2 of Cups is a day to
count those you love, and those who love you. It is a day to be deeply
grateful that you have such abundance and bounty in your life. There
is no greater wealth we can aspire to than a wealth of love.
For those people who have not yet managed to achieve real self-love,
this is a day to work on it. Throughout a day ruled by the Lord of
Love, try to be conscious of your feelings toward yourself. Look
carefully at the ways you choose to describe yourself. Examine how you
feel when dealing with other people.
Try to see yourself and your actions without standing in judgement on
them. Often it is the obsession with judging ourselves (often through
our interpretation of how others see us) that stops us from seeing
ourselves as loving and loveable. So put a hold on your judgement on
this day.
Simply observe what you do, what you think, how you feel. If you
discover that you are putting yourself down, then decide that, at
least for today, you will stop. After all, if you get so much out of
doing this, you can always start again tomorrow ;-)
Instead, say your affirmation, tell that judgmental little gremlin
that it can have the day off, and allow the world to reflect you back
to yourself. You might just get a big surprise!
Affirmation: Love flows into my life in an endless stream.

As we move now to Chochma, which is the second Sephira on the Tree,
the supernal father, wisdom, we see the lovely card for the Two of
Cups. We will recall that the position of the Two represents the place
of relatedness and introduces the possibility or relationship. In
Keter, the place of the One, or Ace, everything is everything else,
and everything is one and we're all united. There is no possibility of
relationship. Only when we get to Chochma, the place of the Two, does
relationship become possible. I-Thou becomes possible. The Suit of
cups is the most hospitable place for the energy of the To.
Relationship is natural to the suit of feeling. We consequently see
here a very comfortable card in the place of Chochma, a balanced and
beautiful one.
We see in the Two of cups an expression of the magic that can take
place when two come together, not just in passion but in spiritual
love. We see a man and a woman; the woman magnetic, remains still; the
man, dynamic, approaches. Each, handsomely dressed, is crowned with a
garland, the woman's distinctly the laurel of victory. Each then is a
winner. This explains why the two are not sharing a cup: she has hers,
he has his.
The suggestion here is that this is not a codependent relationship.
The woman does not come to the man saying, "I'm desperate! Still my
terror, ease my pain, or I'm not going to make it! Let me drink from
your cup because I don't have one." The man does not say, "At last!
Someone in worse shape than I am! Compared to her, I'm a bloody hero!
She can't even tie her own shoelaces. She needs me. If I have her in
my life, I don't have to deal with my own stuff. Dealing with her
crises – just ensuring her survival – will take all my time and
energy. So what if I can't get through a day without a couple of
six-packs? I function great compared to her!" What we see, rather, is
that the man approaches the woman saying, "I have a full cup, and I
would like to share it with you." We may imagine her reply to be, "I
too have a full cup and I would like to share it with you." The
relationship suggested is that between two independent people. Chochma
means "wisdom"; the wisdom they have achieved as individuals has
prepared them for the relationship.
Because of their mutual independence, a cordial distance that is
almost chivalric can be maintained between the two. There is a
gentleness and caring; rather than risk intrusion or offence, the two
keep a respectful distance. In recent years, we have seen a return to
the gradual development of relationships. The madness of the late
sixties through the early eighties seems to be gone. People no longer
think that instant physical intimacy is an expression of freedom. We
seem again to recognize the need for preparation, whether in cooking
or spiritual development or relationship. We cannot achieve true
intimacy without putting in time and work.
Over the figures in the Two of Cups we see a winged lion head, the red
leonine energy of passion. The spread wings unite the two as one so
that the relationship is more than the sum of its parts. The whole is
something entirely different. A fiery angel has been created by the
feeling between these two: there is the suggestion of being uplifted
as well as merging in passion.
Finally, between the two we see the caduceus, the symbol of the
medical profession; and therefore the symbol of healing. This is an
important and lovely concept, that relationships have the power to
heal. The caduceus, for those of you who may not be aware of it, was
created when the Greek god Hermes was walking down a dusty road and
saw two snakes tangled in battle. He three his staff down between them
to keep them from harming each other, and they wound around his staff
in the now familiar pattern. By virtue of having prevented harm,
Hermes became the god of medicine and healing, and the caduceus a
symbol of the healing arts.
The suggestion of healing is particularly interesting when we consider
an old Hebrew midrash, or interpretive story, about the creation of
Adam and Eve that Rabbi Steve Robbins tells most beautifully. It is
similar to the more exoteric forms of the myth in the Bible, but
different enough to make a lot of us (especially feminists) very
happy. The original creation myth is that God, having completed the
rest of creation, made a being in His/Her own likeness and called it
Adam. Because everything that was in God was also in Adam, it was
possible for Adam to communicate with God at any time. But Adam
wandered around the Garden of Eden and saw that each creature had a
mate unto its own kind, and Adam alone had no mate. The earthling was
lonely and said to god, "Of all the creatures in the world, I alone am
without a mate, and I cannot function in this world." (Interestingly,
the word in Hebrew for sexual intercourse has the same root as the
verb "to function". So much for any notions of sexuality as sinful)
God replied, "I can make a mate for you, but if I do this, our
relationship will never be the same because then you will be only half
of what I am, and you will not be able to relate to me in the same way
as you do now." Adam said, "It would be worth it. I must have a mate.
I must feel that I am a part of this world." so god put Adam into a
deep sleep and divided his first human down the centre and, as the
story goes, the two danced apart. Adam the androgyne was divided into
two beings, the male and the female. (This story is very different
from the version in which woman is created from only from Adam's rib,
the implication being that his heart, or even a lung, of which he had
two, was too valuable to sacrifice for the creation of a mere woman.
Apparently, even a finger would have constituted too great a cost to
Adam's dexterity. So what does Adam have so many of and so little use
for that he'll never miss one? The suggestion is that a woman is worth
the concession of a single rib, and not an earlobe more).
This moving midrash enables us to understand in a new way the
tremendous yearning we each have within us to find our mate, because
what we are really looking for is our own other half. This is what we
feel when we talk about looking for our soul mate. We are looking for
the one who will make us feel complete, whole.
Now, I want to stress here that this is, of course, metaphor. We each
have male and female energies within us. It may be that my other half
also takes the physical form of a woman. Or it may be that a man's
other half takes the physical form of a man. That doesn't matter. When
we talk about male and female, we're talking about male energy and
female energy. It's very important to remember that. All varieties of
love are valid to the heart. What is important is that two come
together as one and create a relationship through healing and love
that is both passionate and spiritual, the whole of which is greater
than the sum of its parts. Between the two figures of the Two of Cups
we see mutual respect. Recall for a moment the Six of Pentacles. That
is an image of domination. This is an image of partnership.
We have said that Tarot cards all have both positive and negative
charges. What could be wrong withe the Two of Cups? Perhaps it is a
little too good to be true. There is something so idealistic, so
pristine, so perfect about the partnership represented that it sets
people up for disappointment. You know, when you have this kind of
entirely lovely relationship, you don't want to be around the other
person when your hair needs washing. Yet sooner or later everybody's
hair needs washing. And if you're actually going to set up house with
someone about whom you feel this way, inevitably that person is going
to see it all, and so are you. He will see you, bloated and short
tempered with a touch of acne, roughly once a month. You will watch in
horrified fascination as he laughs at moronic jokes on his favourite
sitcom. He will wonder why you can cook only three different dishes.
You will wonder why he drives ten minutes out of his way to save three
cents a gallon on gas. And everyone has some personal habit fit only
for total privacy in which we can be surprised, to our mortification
and out mate's disillusion, if only perfection will do. Laughter at
such moments is not an option for the figures in the Two of Cups.
The Two of Cups, then, is a card often associated with the beginning
of relationships, because as they develop it becomes clear that no one
on this earth can be our perfect counterpart. That is our ideal, but
it is not realizable. We begin to find the little flaws and to see the
grating inconsistencies between our image and what that person really
is. That's when the highly romantic love gets tested. In "The Road
Less Traveled", M. Scott Peck actually goes so far as to say that you
can't begin loving someone until you fall out of love with them! You
can't begin loving someone until you see and accept that person as
they genuinely are.
There is another aspect of the Two of Cups that can be seen as
negative; it is, as you have probably noticed by now, a separation
card. As idyllic as the little house and rolling green hills of the
background may appear, the couple pictured have separated themselves
from it. They are in the early stage of their relationship that
involves what John Bradshaw calls "primal gazing", the kind of mooning
absorption appropriate to nursing babies and their mothers. This state
of total infatuation separates the couple from everyone else. They are
in their own little world, which, like a cocoon, spares them any
awareness of troubles and sorrows "out there". We will see more mature
images of love as our work progresses, but the couple in the Two are
complete unto themselves. May they savor the exquisite fleeting
moment. May we all.

TWO OF CUPS
Attribution - Venus in Cancer
Cups is the suit of emotion, inner states, feelings, relationships,
memories, spiritual experiences.
Twos represent formation, duality, balance, partnership, dilemmas,
choices, competing or combined forces, conflict, see-saw, creativity
not yet fulfilled, reflection. The number two represents yin energy
and promotes co-operation, partnership, friendship and receptivity.
Rider-Waite Imagery
The Number two is related to the 2nd Kabalistic world and is called
wisdom. Cups represent the world of emotions and relationships. These
two ideas together form the two of cups which is about the union of
soul mates and all relationships based on mutual understanding. A man
and a woman are shown on this card looking at each other. The woman is
wearing a Laurel wreath (controlled energy) and the man is wearing a
rose wreath (ennobled passion).
They are offering their cups as a pledge of faith and fidelity. The
Lion, above the couple, is the symbol of the soul created from the
union of a pair of people or opposites. The red that shows up on this
card on the lion, rose head wreath, and woman's' shoes represents
desire. Both figures are wearing white (spirit). The woman has a blue
(wisdom) over garment and the man is wearing yellow (consciousness).

On This Day:
Thursday January 19, 2012
This is the 19th day of the year, with 347 days remaining in 2012.
Fact of the Day: AIDS
The current consensus on the origin of the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency
Virus) virus is that it was a virus living in simians (monkeys) in
Western Africa, that somehow "jumped" across the species border to
become a human-viable disease - possibly as a result of the use of
monkey meat as a foodstuff in Western Africa. A version of the virus
known as SIV (Simian Immundeficiency Virus) is prevalent among monkeys
in that region. In the Western world, the disease first became
commonly recognized as a sexually-transmitted disease spreading among
the gay community on the West Coast of the USA, and among inhabitants
of Haiti. It is possible that the disease reached the western
hemisphere through Haiti. Originally known as GRIDS (Gay-Related
Immune Deficiency Syndrome), the disease later received the name AIDS
(Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) in recognition of the fact that
it was not specifically a homosexual disease.
