Developing Convictions

Jeremiah 17:5-8

An acorn needs nutrients and time to grow into a tall, sturdy oak
tree. Likewise, men and women of conviction develop gradually through
committed Bible study and prayer. Ready to get planted firmly in
biblical truth? Here's how:

Make a list of issues for which you need to form a conviction. Here
are questions to help you get started: Do you consider the Bible true
and trustworthy? Do you think that believing in Jesus Christ is the
only way to be saved? What is the Holy Spirit's role in the lives of
believers and unbelievers? Are we to forgive others in every
situation? How should Christians approach finances? What's your
purpose in life? What is your role in the church and at work? How
should you think and act regarding social issues like capital
punishment, abortion, and racism?

It is my hope that these questions will open the eyes of those who
haven't contemplated how their personal philosophies have developed.
It's time to change that. Study the Bible and make God's Word the
cornerstone of your thinking. A concordance will point you to
scriptures that relate to the above topics. Evaluate what the Bible
says rather than looking at an issue through the lens of personal
preference. Ask, What does God say? rather than What does this mean to
me?

Once you know what God says, you have a choice to make: Believe Him
and commit to living according to your conviction, or continue being
tossed by waves of doubt and indecision (James 1:6). Root yourself in
God's Word and be called one of His oaks of righteousness (Isa. 61:3).

"Engage"

"And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew
nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to
meet the Philistine." 1 Samuel 17:48

I woke up this morning hearing the word "engage" in my spirit. A
couple of the definitions for the word engage are: to occupy oneself;
become involved; enter into conflict. The Bible plainly lets us know
that there is a very real spiritual battle going on in the world and
that we have an enemy who has waged war against us for the purpose to
kill, steal and destroy. When we realize that, we also have to
realize that there are times when we have to get into the battle. We
cannot stand idly by and do nothing.

Each day for forty days the giant Goliath would come out and threaten
the army of Israel. But they did nothing. They just stared at him,
commented on his size, focused on their inability to overcome him, hid
behind one another and cowed down in fear. This was an army, they
should have been doing what armies do best-- fight. No amount of
hiding was going to "get rid of him". Fear and complacency are never
weapons that bring victory over the enemy. It only adds strength to
the opponent. As long as the Israelites stood back unwilling to
engage in the battle, his threats did not stop and they were held
prisoners to fear and discouragement.

The Israelites did not experience victory until David stepped up and
engaged the giant. Once he did, the giant was defeated and the
Philistine army was sent fleeing. After having endured his threats
for forty days, the enemy was defeated in one day all because someone
decided to engage instead of sit back and just "talk about it".

You can sit back and continue to talk about your enemy- how he has
treated you, how big he is, how much power he has, how helpless you
feel against him; or you can go out and met him face to face and do
battle against him. There are two things that are for sure. 1) If
you do nothing, he won't quit. He will continue to torment you. He
will continue to threaten you. He will continue to defeat you. 2)
If you engage him, you will defeat him. Did David lose the battle
against the giant? No. The reasons why are plain: he knew that God
was greater, he knew that this was more than just a battle between two
natural armies, he knew that the Lord was with him, and he trusted
fully in God's power to defeat and deliver them from the enemy.

You can go out there and defeat the enemy that keeps taunting and
harassing you too. (Let me interject something here. Please don't
misunderstand, I am NOT talking about a natural battle, but a
spiritual one. Remember that we don't fight against flesh and blood,
and the weapons that we use are not natural weapons like guns or
knives. Our weapons are spiritual in nature- prayer, fasting, God's
word, praise, our confession.) So the decision is up to you-- sit
back and do nothing and let the enemy keep defeating you, or engage in
the battle and become victorious.

Have a great day. You will never win the battle if you sit back and
do nothing. You have to engage the enemy.

Romans 3:10-11

Perhaps you've seen or heard the illustration of people trying to get
to heaven as trying to leap over an ocean. The illustration goes that
some may jump further than others, but the point is clear that no one
can jump across the ocean. And in the same way, while some may live
better lives than others, the point is that no one can live a life
holy enough to get to heaven.

Now, I want you to know that I believe all of that is true. Not one
person is good enough to go to heaven. And even those who seem to live
better lives than others still fall short, by far.

But do you know what I've noticed in life? It's that most people don't
even try to jump to attain salvation. Oh, there may be a few religious
people who try to prove themselves to God, but very few people today
even bother to try to jump to get to God because most people today
assume they're already okay.

However, the reality is that not one person apart from Christ is okay.
Every single individual has sinned and has fallen short of God's holy
standard. No one is okay, but God has given them a way to be made okay
with Him.

So, don't let the prevailing attitude of "I'm okay, you're okay" keep
you from sharing God's truth. It's only through Christ that anyone can
come to God, so share that with others each day!

NO ONE CAN COME TO GOD APART FROM JESUS CHRIST. SO LIVE YOUR LIFE TO
TELL THE WORLD THAT JESUS HAS MADE A WAY BACK TO GOD!

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my

There is no way to measure the tremendous love and
compassion that God has for those who love Him; For this is love: not
that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning
sacrifice for our sins. ( 1 John 4:10 ) Therefore; We know and rely on
the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in
God, and God in him. ( 1 John 4:16 )

Also through our faith we come to know peace as we have never known
it before, for it is written; Therefore, since we have been justified
through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
( Romans 5:1 )

Therefore, Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as
members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
( Colossians 3:15 )

So if you haven't already, give your heart to God, for then; The
peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your
heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. Amen.
( Philippians 4:7 )

DEAD TO SIN

Romans 6:11, 12
Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ
Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body that you should
obey its lusts

Sin is the condition into which all descendants of fallen Adam are born
(Romans 5:12). Sin is living our lives independently of God. It's the
result of being deceived by Satan to believe that meaning and purpose in
life may be achieved apart from a personal relationship with, and obedience
to, the Creator of life (Deuteronomy 30:19, 20; 1 John 5:12). In the
non-Christian, sin permeates the old nature, dominates the old self, and
perpetuates the deeds of the flesh. Satan is at the heart of all sin (1
John 3:8). He deceives people into believing a lie and counsels them to
rebel against God.

When you received Christ you died to sin and its power to dominate you was
broken. Satan and sin have not died; they are still strong and appealing.
But you no longer have to sin because you are dead to sin and alive to God
in Christ (Romans 6:11). You are not dead to sin because you consider it
so; you consider it so because it is so. In Christ you have already died to
sin.

Paul goes on to say that we are not to use our bodies as instruments of
unrighteousness (verse 13). If we do, we allow sin to rule in our mortal
bodies. For example, it is virtually impossible for someone to commit a
sexual sin and not use his body as an instrument of unrighteousness,
allowing sin to rule. Ask the Lord to reveal to your mind how you have
wrongly used your body, especially sexually. Renounce that wrong use and
then submit your body to God as a living sacrifice. It is your
responsibility not to let "sin reign in your mortal body that you should
obey its lusts" (Romans 6:12).

Prayer: Loving Lord, I know that sin's power over me has been broken. Help
me live today in the light of that truth by renouncing sin and submitting
my body to You.

Read Exodus 5 – 7
Highlights:
Moses' demands to Pharaoh; Aaron to speak for Moses; Moses' rod turned into
a serpent; plague of blood.
God commanded Moses to face the Pharaoh of Egypt, who referred to himself
as a god, and say: Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Let My people go,
that they may hold (celebrate) a feast unto Me in the wilderness. And
Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel
go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go (Ex. 5:1-2).
Moses' immediate reaction was to blame God, saying: Wherefore hast Thou so
evil entreated (brought harm to) this people? why is it that Thou hast sent
me? For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Thy Name, he hath done evil to
this people; neither hast Thou delivered Thy people (5:22-23).
How often in life our questions far outnumber our answers: "Why have I been
diagnosed with cancer? Why did my husband divorce me? Why did my child
become a drug addict? Why was my child born with handicaps? Why did I lose
my job? Why me?" God didn't answer Moses' questions, and seldom does He
answer us in the way we expect.
When Moses cried out: "Why, Lord?," God first reminded him of who He was.
And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, I am the LORD (6:2) meaning:
"I am the only Self-Existent God and the One who knows what is best. I am
altogether sufficient to meet your needs." What is important for us to know
is that God is the unchangeable, loving, Almighty, all-wise God of truth.
He promised Moses: I will bring you out from under the burdens of the
Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage . . . I will take you to
Me for a people, and I will be to you . . . your God (6:6-8).
Everyone is important to God. He is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34).
After His seventh I will, He repeated for emphasis: I am the LORD (Ex.
6:8). God has never once failed to keep His Word when our lives are in
harmony with His Word. But, seldom are His promises fulfilled as soon as we
expect, and almost never in the way we think best.
Pharaoh persisted in keeping the Israelites under his cruel authority.
However, as had been foretold, the judgment of God was poured forth on each
false Egyptian deity, and, eventually, on Pharaoh himself and on his
armies. To day . . . hear His voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the
provocation (provoking Me), in the day of temptation (testing) in the
wilderness. . . . I was grieved with that generation (Heb. 3:7-8,10).
Thought for Today:
Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard
for Me (Jer. 32:27)?
Christ Revealed:
As the Redeemer from the bondage of sin. I will bring you out . . . I will
redeem you (Ex. 6:6). Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with
corruptible things . . . But with the precious blood of Christ (I Pet.
1:18-19).

Genesis 40

Joseph is confined in prison.
INSIGHT
Joseph is one of the finest examples in the Bible of faithfulness in the
face of tribulation. Wherever he was, Joseph lived for the glory of God. He
demonstrated that he could be trusted in the tough times, thereby making
himself eligible for God to use him in other settings. Joseph was faithful
over small things, so God was able to set him over large things.
Most of our failures come with the small things. It rarely occurs to us
that the challenge of the moment is to demonstrate ourselves faithful at
that point. Then -- and only then -- will we be trusted in the greater
things. Joseph is a good reminder.
PRAYER
· Faithfulness in praise is a part of our privilege as servants of God:

Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
And Your dominion endures throughout all generations (Psalm 145:13).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free from sin and
in fellowship with Him:

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
Make me hear joy and gladness,
That the bones You have broken may rejoice.
Hide Your face from my sins,
And blot out all my iniquities (Psalm 51:7-9).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to
salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the
Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith;
as it is written, "The just shall live by faith" (Romans 1:16-17).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· deliverance from temptation,
· laborers for His harvest,
· the concerns of your heart.

· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be
honor and glory forever and ever. Amen (1 Timothy 1:17).

Lost Donkeys


"Now the donkeys belonging to Saul's father Kish were lost" (1 Sam 9:3).
God used adversity to call the first king of Israel. In 1 Samuel 9 and 10,
we find Saul working in the family business, employed by his father, Kish.
In Bible times, donkeys represented trade and commerce, for they were the
primary means of transporting goods.
Some of Kish's donkeys were missing, so Kish told his son Saul to take a
servant with him and go find the missing donkeys. Saul and the servant
traveled the countryside three days in search of the missing donkeys - but
without results. Saul thought his father might worry about him, so he told
the servant, "Let's go back."
The servant replied, "Look, in this town there's a man of God, a prophet.
Let's go see him and maybe he will tell us which way to take." In today's
terminology, it was time to call in a consultant.
So Saul and the servant went through the town and the prophet - a man named
Samuel - was walking toward them along the street. As Samuel walked toward
Saul, God told the prophet, "The man who is approaching is the one I told
you about. He will be the leader of My people."
Saul stopped Samuel in the street and said, "Sir, would you please tell me
how to find the house of the prophet?"
"I'm the prophet you're looking for," Samuel replied. "Today you'll have
dinner with me and tomorrow I'll tell you everything that is in your heart."
Saul's pathway to leadership led through the experience of a business
setback: a missing herd of donkeys. God arranged every step of Saul's
journey.
It was God who sent the donkeys away, which made it necessary for Saul to
go searching for them. When Saul was ready to give up the search, God
arranged for the servant to suggest that they look for a prophet in a
nearby city. The Lord spoke to the prophet and told him to expect Saul's
arrival. There was not a single detail left to chance. God's plan worked
flawlessly.
So it is in your life and mine. God is in control of every detail in your
life.

God Called Out

But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" (Genesis 3:9 NIV)
Friend to Friend
Eden was full of God's glory—breathtaking beauty with unbroken union and
constant communion with God. But as we know, something went terribly wrong,
and Adam and Eve found themselves naked and ashamed. And what was the first
thing they did when that happened?
They hid.
They hid from God.
"Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was
walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD
God among the trees of the garden. But the LORD God called to the man,
"Where are you?" (Genesis 3:9). God called out.
God.
Called.
Out.
"Where are you?" God asked. It was the very first question in the Bible,
and it was asked by an all-knowing God. He still asks that very question
today. Perhaps you've heard it as well. I have.
The real tragedy of Adam and Eve's disobedience was that union between God
and man was broken. Shattered. Destroyed. But as soon as Eve sank her teeth
into the forbidden fruit, the shadow of the cross rose on the horizon, and
God's redemptive plan to restore all that we had lost was set in motion.
All through the rest of the Old Testament, from Genesis 3:9 to Malachi 4:6,
we read of God calling humanity back to Himself.
We read of cycles of humanity's fellowship with God, followed by humanity's
rebellion against God, followed by God's wooing humanity back in the midst
of difficult circumstances, followed by humanity's repentance, followed by
humanity's fellowship with God, followed by humanity's rebellion against
God, followed by God's wooing humanity back in the midst of difficult
situations, followed by humanity's repentance, followed by humanity's
fellowship with God, followed by….
And all along God continues His passionate pursuit of the human heart as He
relentlessly romances us, His image bearers, and calls out to us first one
way, then another.
Interestingly, the Hebrew word for Bible is mikra, and it means the calling
out of God. Isn't that what the Bible really is? The calling out of God to
draw mankind back to Himself. To restore our original glory through the
finished work of Jesus Christ? He begins with calling out that very first
question: "Where are you?" He ends it the same. "I stand at the door and
knock," (Revelation 3:20).
The Bible tells us, "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"
(Romans 3:23). There is not one of us who is completely and perfectly
living the life that God had intended in the Garden. But the good news is
that Christ in us is the hope of glory (Colossians 1:24-27). It is through
that union that glory moments occur. Without Christ in us, we are not even
able to detect or reflect God's glory at all. And yet, that was God's
original intent for us "in the beginning."
Most people would agree that we are born with an inherent inner nagging
that there has to be something more than what we see. Solomon wrote: "He
has also set eternity in the hearts of men" (Ecclesiastes 3:11). No matter
how humanity has tried to satisfy the hunger, quench the thirst, or mask
the reality of God's existence, eternity still pulls at the heart. A
longing to experience God persists. The glory ache is a chronic throb.
But here is the good news! Aren't you ready for some good news? This is not
our final home! We are merely passing through this thing called life. Until
those who know Christ leave this earth and enter God's glory once and for
all, until we inhale eternity, He gives us glimpses of glory right here on
earth! Moments of sudden glory abound, if we will but take the time to
recognize them, to embrace them, to enjoy them … to taste and see that the
Lord is good!

Let's Pray
Here I am, Lord. I'm right here in Your presence. Thank You for not leaving
me hiding in shame, but called me out of hiding to join You in a
relationship.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.

*A hospital operator received a call from a woman one morning
who demanded to know "how is Mrs. Brinkman?' A voice with authority
came on and told said, "Her blood pressure is just fine. She has been
eating
and sleeping well. The Doctor is sending her home at noon today."

The lady on the phone replied, "Wonderful!" "I'm Mrs. Brinkman,
and my Doctor never tells me anything." :o)

It is so different with our Lord who is our Great Physician. We
don't have to stay in darkness if we call upon Him. Jesus tells
us to call unto Him as He will answer us. Sometimes people
are slow to call upon the Lord and call upon everyone else
first, before looking to God. He will never fail us and
will show us great and mighty things which we know not.
He will sustain us with His help and hope, through Christ
Jesus, our Lord.

God's Word speaks to our hearts as well as His Holy Spirit when we
lean upon Him. He'll give us true wisdom and discernment just
as promised. We give thanks for we truly have a Mighty God
who will never leave or forsake us. Jesus really is all we need!

A young woman excited about her salvation developed a deep desire to share
the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the world. She felt called to missions, so
she asked her pastor where she might go to serve to be most effective. He
told her to come back the following day and he would have an answer for her
then.
The next day, when she returned to his office, the pastor was waiting for
her with an answer. He handed her a folded slip of paper and said, "I'm
suggesting that you begin with someone who needs Christ right now more than
anyone else in the entire world."
The young woman quickly left the pastor's office, eager to find out where
her mission field was. She carefully opened the note and was surprised to
discover two words: "Your father."
She had been so passionate about reaching the lost in foreign lands that
she had neglected to share the Gospel with someone so close to home.
Are there people in your life who don't know Jesus? Maybe it's a parent, a
sibling, a grandchild, a close friend, an acquaintance, one of your
children, or even your spouse. Many people make the mistake of thinking the
only mission field is overseas.
But God has called you to share the Good News of His Word right where you
are—in your city, neighborhood, and among your circle of friends. If you
know someone who is living with no hope and without a relationship with
Jesus, then take the time today to share truth that will change their lives
forever.

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Ask God to reveal people in your life that need to know
the Lord so you can share Christ with them. Pray that He would open up the
right opportunity at the right time for the Holy Spirit to work in their
lives through you.

To be loved, you have to be willing to love first

Maybe life is all about being first after all! Not so fast.
Being first is about consciousness, not competitiveness, i.e., "as you
sow, so shall you reap." To be loved, you have to be willing to love
first; to be cherished, you have to be willing to give respect first;
to be heard, you have to be willing to listen first; and to experience
forgiveness and freedom, you have to be willing to forgive first.

I honestly believe that the only way to get to happiness is to
be happy already. Many people live their life according to the
formula: Do + Have = Be. They cannot just be happy because first they
have to do "x," and then they have to have "y." In other words, they
have to have a house, they have to do more, they have to do even more,
they have to have a partner, they have to have lots of money, etc. But
why not just be happy?

In the healing process, people often convince themselves that
they have to get well before they can choose happiness again. In my
work I encourage my clients to honor their pain and choose peace, to
feel fear and choose love, to face the anger and choose forgiveness,
to experience the heartbreak and choose happiness, and to experience
guilt and choose innocence.

Gandhi once said you have to be the change you want. Why?
Because the mirror cannot change without you. And the world is only a
mirror. Remember, you see only your thoughts. When you shift, shift
happens. If you don't, you simply experience more of the same. It is
no good saying, "I'll be open with you, as soon as you are open with
me." Be first. Be different if you want a different outcome. Be the
goal.

What "to be" decisions will you make today? Think of your goals,
your challenges, your relationships, and ask yourself, "Is how I am
being going to bring me what I really want?" Be still a moment and
reset your intention to be loving no matter what, to be kind in spite
of everything, to shine your light come what may. Your "to be"
decisions are between you and God. Let nothing steal them away.

Read | Judges 16:1-24

The book of Judges tells of a man named Samson, who was so
strong he could kill a lion with his bare hands (14:5-6). He possessed
physical strength unequalled by any human being. But this could not
compensate for his inner weakness.

All of us have areas of weakness. God wants these character
flaws to show us how totally dependent we are upon Him. When we handle
them properly, they drive us into a deeper, more intimate relationship
with the Lord. But uncontrolled weakness wreaks havoc in a person's
life.

Samson's Achilles' heel was uncontrollable lust. Although he was
raised in a godly home and had a clear calling in life, he gave in to
his desires and deliberately violated the truth he knew so well.
Despite Nazirite laws forbidding involvement with foreign women,
Samson pursued a harlot in Gaza (16:1). Later, he met a woman named
Delilah, and even though her motives were blatantly treacherous, he
gave himself over—heart, mind, and spirit—to sexual indulgence. He was
in such bondage to the sin that he ultimately allowed it to dictate
his actions, even at the cost of his life.

Before he died, Samson lost everything: his strength, eyesight,
and honor. The man who once led his country mightily became a slave to
his enemies (vv. 18-25).

What is your weakness? Is it lust, insecurity, fear, greed,
gossip, or pride? Personality flaws can be a powerful motivation for
good or ill, depending on our response. A proclivity for sin can ruin
your life—as it did Samson's—or drive you to utter dependence on God.
The outcome is up to you.

THOUGHT:
I still don't understand resurrection. I get the concept. I
believe God did raise Jesus. Every once in a while, I experience
that power through the Spirit's work in my life strengthening me
for ministry, helping me love others in tough situations,
comforting me when I'm broken, giving me insight when I study the
Word, and strengthening me in the face of temptation. I am humbled,
thrilled, and left longing for more. I want others I love to
experience this awesome power. I'm sure it's the same with you. So
let's join together today, thousands of us all around world, and
let's pray for God to empower those closest to us to discover his
power and to do great things through his Spirit who lives in them.


PRAYER:
Loving God, Almighty Father, please empower me today to live for
you in glorious and wonderful ways. But Father, I don't just pray
that I may do this, please empower those that I love to live for
you. (Add the specific names of folks you want God to bless in this
way.) May we all know that the power in us tore away the bars of
death that held Jesus captive. May we experience this transforming
power and use it to your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Good Grief
Day 225

Good grief is accepting the fact that your loved one has died,
accepting the sorrow and pain, and knowing there is more to come. Good
grief is getting through the days, the months, and, eventually,
through the years.

Dr. Erwin Lutzer says, "There was a young woman who saw me for
counsel. She was madly in love with her husband, and he died
unexpectedly. She was contemplating suicide. She said, 'I simply
cannot live. I want to die, and I want to be with him. That's all that
I care about.' So I explained to her that what she needed to do was to
get through the first year. I promised her that the sun would shine
again.

"She saw me several months later, and she said, 'You know, the sun is
beginning to shine. I have now discovered I can make it without him.'
And she's on her way. Grief takes time but you will find it gets
better, and you must recognize that it is a period of transition to a
brand-new kind of life for you."

Your life will never be the same again, but you will get through the
grief. The grieving process is a transition into your new life.

"He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age" (Ruth 4:15).

Lord, I did not want a new life. I liked my old one just fine, but I
understand that going back is not an option. Therefore, Lord, I will
move forward. Teach me to seek You and embrace You and grow in this
new life. Amen.

Triggers

"So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray
that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power,
together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and
deep is the love of Christ." Ephesians 3:17-18 (NIV 1984)

I was elated one day when the number on my scale dipped below the
plateau weight I'd been stuck at for two weeks. I did a little happy
dance and thought, "Finally, I'm making some real progress in this
journey. It's going to be such a great day. I'm super motivated. Bring
on the raw veggies. Nothing's gonna stop me now!"

Too bad things didn't stay that way. Life, like math, can be
unpredictable. I'm no math whiz, but I do remember there being these
things called polynomials. Polynomials are algebraic expressions that
include real numbers and variables.

That's the way my food issues are-they contain real numbers and
variables. I suspect yours do as well. And while we must pay attention
to the real numbers by eating less and moving more, we would do well
to consider the variables in our lives as well.

Variables are those daily triggers we didn't account for but will
detour even the best of intentions. Triggers can be as large as the
stab of loneliness from a broken relationship or the memory of a
childhood trauma. Triggers can be as small as a discipline "chat" with
a teen out past curfew or stumbling across fresh doughnuts in the
office break room. They can prompt the thought, "Life will be better
if I eat that."

Triggers have nothing to do with physical hunger or the need for
legitimate nourishment. They are lies that we've thought so routinely
they've become well-worn paths to careless eating. Life is not made
better because we overindulge in an unhealthy choice.

The best thing we can do in these triggered moments is to pause. Pause
and ask ourselves, "Do I want to eat this right now because I need
nourishment or because I'm feeling empty emotionally or spiritually?"

If I need nourishment, I can choose a healthy option. If I'm just
feeling empty, I must realize food can fill my stomach but never my
soul.

The only way to negate an emotional eating trigger is to match it with
truth. The truth is this: "I'm not physically hungry right now, but I
need to be filled in another way."

The Bible tells us that we can be rooted in love, not emptiness; that
we have power to choose truth; and that as we comprehend the love of
Christ, we will be filled to the measure of all the fullness-not of
that brownie-but of God (Ephesians 3:17-19). And here's the great
thing about truth: it contains no variables! Truth is stable, secure
and a surefire way to get me through the unpredictable moments of
life.

Take time to pause and use God's truths to challenge your triggers.
And, when you're truly physically hungry, that pause will give you the
moment you need to choose a healthy snack. Then you will be truly
full.

Dear Lord, please help me to battle each of my triggers today with
truth. Your truth. Moment by moment. I understand that food can fill
my stomach but never my soul. Only You can fill my soul and I am
thankful for that. In Jesus' Name, Amen.


Reflect and Respond:
Food can fill my stomach but never my soul.

This week I'll write down what triggers determine an unhealthy pattern
with my eating habits. I'll pause and use God's truths to challenge my
triggers. And, when I'm truly physically hungry, that pause will give
me the moment I need to choose a healthy snack.

Power Verses:
James 1:3-4, "Because you know that the testing of your faith develops
perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be
mature and complete, not lacking anything." (NIV 1984)

John 10:10, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I
have come that you may have life, and have it to the full." (NIV 1984)

"It's a new day and a new attitude."

When you throw things away you can expect feelings of guilt to
creep in. Why? Because you wonder if you're making a mistake – God
forbid you may need it later. The truth is, you're not making a
mistake and secondly you can rest assured you won't throw away
anything that is essential in your life.

Remember that you are in the process of adopting a new attitude.
You don't need clutter in your life. Clutter is a prison wall, an iron
fence, a ball and chain, blocking you from the energy you need and
that you so much deserve.

It's a new day and the perfect time to set sail with a new
attitude. "Clutter Free Forever" is your new mantra.

You cannot enjoy what you need while you still need it, so
Let go of the need and allow the enjoyment. Instead of
Putting limitations and conditions on your fulfillment, put
More limitless possibilities into your awareness.

If there's something you need to do, let go of the needing
And just allow the doing. If there's something you need to
Have, let go of the need and experience how that thing
Begins to be tangibly expressed through your thoughts,
Feelings and actions.

Life is overflowing with every flavor of abundance. Yet when
You feel need, that very feeling is pushing the abundance
Away.

There is really nothing you could possibly need. In one way
Or another, all that exists is connected to you.

Inspired, fulfilled, joyful living is a matter of making the
Journey through those pathways that connect you with what
You seek. When you are free from thoughts of need, the
Journey proceeds quickly and with minimal hindrance.

See need as a mistaken impression existing only in your
Mind. Gently let it go, and immerse yourself fully in the
Powerful, creative flow of life.

Unconditional enjoyment
One of the most reliable ways to ruin your enjoyment of life is
to put too many conditions on that enjoyment. You can put so much time
and energy into getting the conditions just right, that there's
nothing left to enjoy.

Instead of seeking and striving to enjoy life, just simply enjoy
it. Enjoy the moment you're in, without placing so many judgments or
conditions on it.

Is it really so important that events and circumstances line up
in exactly the way you wish? Of course it's not.

Often, life's surprises can turn out to be pleasant surprises if
you'll simply let them. Make the choice to do less fighting against
what comes, and more enjoying of what is.

Think of the time and effort you put into proving you're right
or getting your way. Visualize spending that time instead in
unconditional, authentic enjoyment of the amazing life with which
you're blessed.

Don't work so hard to make enjoyment what you think it should
be. Just relax and let your life be filled with the rich enjoyment of
each special moment.

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world
is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world
makes himself an enemy of God. (James 4:4)
Have you ever tried to be an undercover Christian? That is what happened to
Peter. He was trying to blend into the woodwork. He had been following
Jesus at a distance and became cold, so he was attracted to the warmth of
the enemy's fire.
At this point, Peter was worn down, defeated, weak, and vulnerable. Why was
he even in the high priest's courtyard? According to Matthew 26:58, "he
went in and sat with the servants to see the end." Peter had forgotten all
that Jesus had said about His resurrection from the dead. Now he was just
waiting for the end—the end of Jesus' life . . . the end of his dream . . .
the end of everything he held dear. But it was not the end. It would be a
new beginning.
Here was Peter's problem: he was in the wrong place with the wrong people,
about to do the wrong thing. And when that passion in our heart begins to
die, the fire we had for Christ will grow cold, and we will look elsewhere
for warmth.
The Bible tells us,
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands
in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; but his
delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and
night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings
forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and
whatever he does shall prosper. (Psalm 1:1–3)
When you hang out with the wrong people at the wrong place at the wrong
time, then it is only a matter of time until you do the wrong thing.
Summary sentence: Following Christ at a distance can cause you to be
attracted to the enemy's campfire.

Issue #3717 - Sand and space
As I was working on my sermon for Friday, I was reading about God
covenanting to make the offspring of Abraham more numerous than the grains
of sand on a beach or the stars of the sky. That got me thinking about the
two opposite ends of the size spectrum, the vastness of space and the
smallness of a sand grain.
We look into the heavens and we see stars or we walk along the beach and we
see sand, buts how often do we ever really look at them? Most of the time,
we are so used to seeing them that we pay them no mind whatsoever. Yet,
when we stop and really look it can take our breath away.
AS I pondered the two I searched the net and found a couple of images that
show the beauty of space and the beauty of a tiny grand of sand. They are
truly amazing
The Psalmist speaks of the heavens proclaiming the glory of God and the
marvel of His word.
Psalm 19:1-14 (ESV)
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his
handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of
the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a
bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course
with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of
them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the
Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the Lord are right,
rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the
eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the
Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also
than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great
reward.
Who can discern his errors? Declare me innocent from hidden faults.
Keep back your servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have
dominion over me! Then I shall be blameless, and innocent of great
transgression.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in
your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.


It is true that the heavens declare the wondrous nature of God, but so does
every created thing within the heavens. Every thing on the earth and under
the earth, every thing in the sea and under the sea all proclaim God.
From the vastness of space, to the tiniest grain of sand to the smallest
sub-atomic particle, everything declares that He is.
Take a few moments to truly look around yourself with fresh eyes and see
how wonderful our God is.

"God's Word to You"!

God's Word to You today is found in Matthew 5:13-16

13"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how
can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be
thrown out and trampled by men.

14"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put
it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16In the same
way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and
praise your Father in heaven.

Some believe once saved always saved. Some believe you can lose salvation.
Some believe we have free will both before and after and whether or not we
accept Christ. Some believe every word every action every thought is
predestined by the Lord.

Today I'm not going to discuss any of those. But I will tell you that
whatever you believe and however you choose to live you need to be the salt
and the light in this world.

If you believe you can't lose salvation and have free will then you need to
know that if you are saved you have a personal commitment to our Savior to
live your life for Him. You may have times you struggle and stumble and
when you do then your light dims and those around you may see a weak
witness. You can lose the joy of your salvation.

Live your life for God to the fullest of your ability. Give your life to
God as much as you can and know that daily there will be victories and
daily there will be losses.

But for today let your light shine that those around you may see His
light.
