Coffee Break
"The Living Bible"
"Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men."
2 Corinthians 3:2
I am sure that when you read the title of this morning's devotional,
you thought I was going to be talking about one of the modern day
translations of the Bible. I am not. I am going to talk about our
lives- those who are believers, followers of Christ, Christians.
The verse above says that our lives are like a Bible that all men can
read. How do they "read" our lives? They read it through the things we
say, our actions, our attitudes, the way we respond in situations, by
our character, through the way we conduct ourselves and by the way we
love others. If we are following Christ, then our lives should be
imitating Him- what He does and how He does it. If we are doers of
God's word and not hearers only, then our conduct should line up with
its teachings. The scriptures should be coming alive in our lives so
that the meaning of the scripture is easily understood because they
see its meaning plainly through our conduct.
So what does your life say? What do others read from it? Does it paint
a confusing picture hard to understand? Is it a picture of peace and
joy? Does your life speak of defeat and misery? Does it speak of
victory? If your life is the only "Bible" that those around you have
to "read", then what are they reading? Are they reading enough to get
an understanding of the love, grace and mercy that God has waiting for
them? Are they able to read enough that they would want to turn to the
Lord and receive His great salvation? Is what they are reading making
them desire to know Him or turning them away from Him?
Some people will never pick up the Bible to read it; some will never
go to a church; some will never turn on Christian television, for them
the only hope of "hearing and seeing" the truth of God's word will
only come through your life... is what they are seeing enough for them
to see Christ and desire to have Him?
Have a great day. If your life is the only Bible some folks will
read.... what are they reading?

"So Teach Us How to Number Our Days. . ."
"And, behold, I come quickly; and My reward is with Me, to give every
man according as his work shall be." Revelation 22:12
The difference between people is not that one has more time than the
other. The difference is whether they use their time wisely.
You say, "Well, I'm just killing time." To kill time, is to commit
suicide by degrees. You are just killing yourself because you + time =
life. Now that doesn't mean you are going to be busy every moment.
There needs to be balance in your life – checking in with God first
before you make plans and add things to your agenda.
Make sure you are doing what God wants you to do. Jesus came to the
end of His life and do you know what He said? "I have glorified Thee
on earth: I have finished the work that Thou gavest Me to do" (John
17:4).

Listening to God
Renee Swope
"So Jesus explained, 'I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by
himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the
Father does, the Son also does.'" John 5:19 (NLT)
I want to be a woman who listens to God. But, sometimes I'm not sure
if it's God talking or just me thinking.
And if I'm really honest, when I do sense Him whispering to my heart,
I'm not always crazy about what I sense He's telling me to do. Like
the time I knew without a doubt God wanted me to share my testimony
publicly. I pretty much ran from that assignment for a decade.
Yet, I've learned over the past twenty something years when I listen
to God, I discover His best for me. And, I grow my trust in Him.
I've seen again and again that His ways lead to His goodness, and when
I follow Him, His mercy follows me. At the end of my ten-year
spiritual sprint away from what scared me most — sharing the story of
my brokenness with others — I surrendered to what God was calling me
to do.
I started listening closely to Him and trusting completely in Him, so
that I could experience a day-by-day abiding in His presence and
promises. From there, His plans unfolded day-by-day.
I honestly thought I had been listening to Him all that time. But one
day while I was seeking God's direction in some decisions, the Holy
Spirit showed me I had a habit of asking God what He wanted me to do
and where He wanted me to invest my time. Then I went about doing it,
without depending on Him for direction each step of the way.
Oftentimes, I would seek God for the larger plans in life, convinced
that if I figured out what He wanted me to do then I could become the
person He created me to be, and fulfill the calling He had for me.
Have you ever thought: "If only God would show me what job to take;
what man to marry; what church to attend; what ministry to serve in —
then my life would be complete and I could trust Him with my whole
heart?"
The problem is, sometimes we get a glimpse of where God wants us to go
and then assume we know how to get there.
Or we get a peek at what He wants us to do and think we know how He
wants us to do it. How many times have I made that mistake and then
wondered why I wasn't getting anywhere?
Over time, God has taught me that He wants my spiritual ears more than
my spiritual efforts.
He wants daily dependence, interaction and intimacy with me. And He is
more concerned with my character than what I schedule for Him on my
calendar.
In today's key verse, Jesus tells us that He depended on the Father
for the large and fine print written in His life plan. He listened
closely and obeyed quickly: "...'I tell you the truth, the Son can do
nothing by himself; He does only what He sees the Father doing.
Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.'" (John 5:19 NLT)
Like Jesus, we will discover God's purpose for our lives through
dependent hearts that seek to listen to His — day by day, moment by
moment. Let's position our hearts, minds and souls to hear Him speak
to us today.
Dear Lord, I want to become a woman who listens to You. I come to You
today with a seeking heart, asking not only for direction but for
discernment, humility and dependence on You -- each step of the way.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Reflect and Respond:
Do I read my Bible so God's words and ways are familiar to me? Do I
intentionally listen for God's voice, or do I assume I know what He
wants me to do?
• Take time to pull away from distractions and quiet your thoughts,
even if it's just 10-15 minutes.
• Tell God you want to hear Him speak - through a verse, a song, a
person or a whisper in your soul.
• Talk to Him about your plans for the day and ask Him to show you
His. Give Him permission to interrupt your thoughts and agenda and
lead you in a different direction if He wants to.
• Then get ready for a day filled with adventure and companionship as
you walk hand in hand with your Maker.

times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is
listening.'" (NIV)

Surrendering All
"None of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own
possessions." – Luke 14:33 NASB
Judson Van DeVenter could not find direction in his life. Van
DeVenter, born on this day in 1855, taught art after attending
college. Failing to find
satisfaction, he wondered if God wanted him to go into full-time
evangelistic work. Yet he
continued to struggle.
While conducting a meeting in East Palestine, Ohio, he decided that
the only way he could have peace and know God's will was to surrender
his life anew to Jesus. He wrote his decision in the words to a song,
called "I Surrender All."
As he thought about this decision, Van DeVenter wrote, "All to Jesus,
I
surrender; all to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him,
in His presence daily live."
He humbly bowed at Jesus' feet, ready to forsake "worldly pleasures."
He prayed, "Jesus, take me now." He asked the Lord to make him "wholly
Thine," that he might feel the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
He told Him, "Lord,
I give myself to Thee; fill me with Thy love and power; let Thy
blessing fall on me."
With this deep surrender, Van DeVenter discovered that "a new day was
ushered into my life." He became an evangelist and discovered that
"God had
hidden a song in my heart." He found direction and peace by obeying
the command of
Jesus to leave everything else behind. He had surrendered all.
Do you have any struggles? Do you face decisions about your direction?
Your future?
You can find your answer by surrendering your life fully to Jesus.
Don't seek your own way, but submit your thoughts, goals, and
ambitions to Him.
Seek His will and His Kingdom, not your own.
In absolute surrender, you'll find perfect peace. He will guide you
and give you fulfillment and satisfaction. Don't wait! Do it right
now!
Today's Inspirational Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to You. I humble myself before
You. Fill me with Your Spirit, and use me for Your Kingdom. Let Your
blessings
fall on me. In Your name. Amen.

Forgive
I forgive others and hold them in prayer.
When I have been hurt by another, the last thing I may feel like doing
is forgiving. If a person says something that upsets or insults me, an
organization takes action that angers me, or life seems unfair, there
is a part of me that may want justice, not forgiveness.
In truth, though, there is no victory in resentment. I am the one who
suffers when I choose not to forgive. As I release and let go of my
need to defend my position, I am liberated. I experience a return to
peace, rather than a need to blame.
While I do not condone hurtful behavior, and I take action when
necessary, I do not hold anger in my heart. I forgive and bring the
matter to God in prayer.
Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against
anyone.--Mark 11:25

Jesus said; He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who
loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My
Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him."
( John 14:21 *NKJV )
When we lovingly obey God's Commandments, and study
His Word we begin to experience a more intimate knowledge
of our Heavenly Father. It is through that knowledge that we
become closer to Him as well, for it is written that if you; Draw near
to God and He will draw near to you.
( James 4:8 )
Now isn't is a pity that so many in this World today feel unloved and
alone, when all they have to do is reach out to God? For it is also
written; God is love. (1 John 4:8)
Why not pray for them tonight, and always tell God how much you love
Him when you pray. For God has said; I love those who love me, And
those who seek
me diligently will find Me. ( Proverbs 8:17 )
So love the LORD your God with
all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your
mind.' ( Matthew 22:37 ) And He will love you and bless you, in
return. He will also fill
you with His Great Love, a love that many in the World do not know.
Amen.

Our Convictions Our Defense
Romans 14:20-23
A person of conviction has become convinced, by either evidence or
argument, that his beliefs are true. Today, most men and women would
rather live by preference than conviction. They choose to believe
something based on certain conditions and circumstances. When the
situation changes, so does their loyalty. In other words, a lot of
people vacillate on issues that require a firm resolve.
Contrast this wishy-washy approach with the mindset of the great men
and women of Scripture. Despite many years of unfair treatment, Joseph
never wavered in his commitment to godly principles . As a result, he
was in the right place at the right time to ensure Israel's survival
(Gen. 50:20). Daniel, another righteous man in an idolatrous land,
earned the trust of foreign kings by standing firm in his beliefs
(Dan. 1:20). When his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego also
refused to compromise their beliefs, they influenced a king to
recognize Jehovah as the one true God (3:29).
As these biblical heroes show, godly convictions can withstand the
changing winds of opinion and the persuasive arguments of opponents.
If we are grounded in the Word and trust what God has said, we can
stand firm in our beliefs. Confidence breeds the courage to remain
strong amid conflict.
Instead of following your own preferences, choose to live by godly
conviction. The Bible has much to say about the most important aspects
of your life. See if God's principles and promises hold true. Through
prayer and study, allow Him to firmly root you in solid biblical
convictions.

But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day
is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:8
A story is told about a man who was talking with the Lord and said,
"Lord, is it true that with You, a day is like a thousand years and a
thousand years is like a day?" And the Lord said, "Yes, that's true."
"Does that mean that a penny to you is like a million dollars and a
million dollars like a penny?" And the Lord said, "Yes, a million
dollars to you is like a penny to me."
The man said, "Well, Lord, since a million dollars to you is like a
penny to me, could I have a penny?" And the Lord said, "Yes… in a
minute."
When it comes to what you and I consider precious such as time, money,
or anything else of value, in the grand scheme of things it's really
worthless. You can be the richest person in the world, but on the day
you meet God, all your earthly possessions will count for nothing.
It's been said that that's why you never see a hearse towing a U-Haul
trailer!
Compared to everything God has, you really have very little. So when
you count your real value, remember that God sees past material wealth
and petty possessions into your very soul. And with Christ on your
side, you can have the only kind of riches that really matter in His
eyes!
DON'T BE DECEIVED INTO THINKING YOUR VALUE IS FOUND IN THE THINGS OF
THIS WORLD. THE ONLY RICHES THAT MATTER ARE THOSE YOU HAVE IN CHRIST!

THE EFFECTS OF THE FALL
Romans 5:12
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death
through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned
Unfortunately, the idyllic setting in the Garden of Eden was shattered.
Genesis 3 tells the sad story of Adam and Eve's lost relationship with God
through sin. The effects of man's fall were dramatic, immediate and
far-reaching, infecting every subsequent member of the human race.
What happened to Adam and Eve spiritually because of the Fall? They died.
Their union with God was severed and they were separated from God. God had
specifically said: "You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good
and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die" (Genesis 2:17 NIV ).
They ate and they died.
Did they die physically? No. The process of physical death was set in
motion, but they were alive physically for several hundred more years. They
died spiritually; their souls were separated from God. They were banished
from God's presence. They were cast out of the Garden of Eden and guarding
the entrance were cherubim waving a flaming sword (Genesis 3:23, 24).
After Adam, everyone who comes into the world is born physically alive but
spiritually dead, separated from God. Paul wrote, "As for you, you were
dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live" (Ephesians
2:1 NIV ).
How did Jesus remedy this problem? In two dramatic, life-changing ways.
First, He died on the cross to cure the disease that caused us to die: sin.
Romans 6:23 begins, "The wages of sin is death." Then He rose from the dead
to give us spiritual life. The verse continues, "But the free gift of God
is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Jesus Himself said, "I came that
they might have life" (John 10:10).
The bad news is that , as a child of Adam, you inherited spiritual death.
But the eternally good news is that, as a child of God through faith in
Christ, you will live forever because of the life He has provided for you.
Prayer: Thank You, heavenly Father, for sending Jesus to die on the cross
for my sins and then raising Him from the dead so I may have life.

Exodus 2 – 4
Highlights:
Early life of Moses; his flight into Midian; the burning bush; his
commission to free the nation of Israel; his return to Egypt.
Moses, the son of Israelite slaves, enjoyed the luxury of the Egyptian
palace and received all the privileges and opportunities of administrative
training. As the adopted son of Pharaoh's daughter, it appears that he
could have been the next Pharaoh of Egypt.
Moses was 40 years old when he executed the cruel Egyptian who was smiting
(striking, beating) an Hebrew, one of his brethren (Ex. 2:11-12). This
probably was Moses' legal right since he was of the royal household and
possibly second only to Pharaoh in administering justice. Moses was in the
prime of his life and, from a natural point of view, it would seem to be
the ideal time for God to use him to set His people free from their
suffering.
Instead, it was the will of God that Moses flee Egypt. This was followed by
40 years of loneliness as a shepherd in a desert wilderness. It must have
seemed to Moses a waste of 40 of his best years to do nothing of
importance. But, with the Lord, such time is never wasted. It was in the
desert that the Lord appeared to him and said: Draw not nigh hither: put
off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is
holy ground (3:5). Moses probably would never have learned humility or been
able to come closer to God in an Egyptian palace. He was too busy and too
important. However, both experiences — growing up in the palace and being
humbled by God in the desert — were vital in preparing him to be the person
God could use to lead His people out of Egypt, through the desert, and on
to the border of the promised land.
No matter how much wisdom of the world we might accumulate, it alone cannot
qualify us to make right decisions in life. We must be taught and led by
the Holy Spirit of God through reading His Word and being obedient to its
truth. It is the Holy Spirit's blessing on what we do and say that makes
our lives truly worthwhile. Like Moses, our most basic need is to recognize
the danger of self-sufficiency. It was spiritually necessary for Moses to
tend sheep on the backside of the desert in order for him to develop
greater dependence on God (3:1).
Regardless of the outcome, by faith Moses, when he was come to years,
refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing rather to
suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of
sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the
treasures in Egypt (Heb. 11:24-26).
Thought for Today:
Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the
furnace of affliction (Is. 48:10).
Christ Revealed:
As the I AM THAT I AM who commissioned Moses (Ex. 3:13-14; comp. Heb.
13:8). Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily (Truly, truly), I say unto you,
Before Abraham was, I am (John 8:58).
Word Studies:
2:13 strove, were quarreling; 2:16 of Midian, of the descendants of Abraham
through his second wife Keturah (Gen. 25:1-4); 2:23 sighed by reason of,
groaned because of; 2:25 had respect unto, was concerned about; 3:22 spoil,
take the wealth of.

Genesis 39
Joseph resists the advances of Potiphar's wife.
INSIGHT
Mark Twain once wrote: "Always do right. It will gratify some and astonish
the rest." While we smile at that, there are greater reasons for doing
right.
Joseph is a good example. When he resisted the advances of Potiphar's wife,
Joseph set himself on the road to the throne of Egypt. Had he given in,
Joseph would have set himself on the road to ruin.
Always do right. There is more at stake than you might think.
PRAYER
· We praise Christ Jesus for His wonderful works:
O Lord, You have searched me and known me. . .
I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Marvelous are Your works,
And that my soul knows very well. . .
How precious also are Your thoughts to me,
O God!
How great is the sum of them!
(Psalm 139:1, 14, 17).
· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free from sin and
in fellowship with Him:
Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression (Psalm 19:12-13).
· As you confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, voice
your affirmation of God's Word:
Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade
itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is
not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in
the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures
all things (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· a passion for moral excellence,
· Christian education institutions,
· today's activities.
· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:
So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm
90:12).

Competition in the Kingdom
"LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot
secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I
have a delightful inheritance" (Ps 16:5-6).
There is absolutely no place for competitiveness in ministry or marketplace
activity if you understand God's view of receiving. The Scripture tells us
that we are not only to bless our competition, but we are also called to
bless our enemies.
The reason we can do this is because our security and provision is not
based on posturing ourselves against another, but fulfilling what God has
called us to do. When we take a proactive step to bless another, we
actually apply a Kingdom principle that results in greater blessing to
others, the Kingdom of God and even to ourselves.
Our ministry tries to help other ministries like ours. Some would say that
we are in danger of losing "market share" or even our donors. This is the
worldly model of competition. Those who cannot bless others are insecure in
their own calling and insecure in God's ability to provide for their own
enterprise.
God has already allocated His portion for you before the foundation of the
world. You cannot out-give God. As you do your work unto Him God allows you
to receive the fruit of your work.
"If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands
I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations
on earth. All these blessings will come upon you and accompany you if you
obey the LORD your God: You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the
country. . . The LORD will grant that the enemies who rise up against you
will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but
flee from you in seven. The LORD will send a blessing on your barns and on
everything you put your hand to. The LORD your God will bless you in the
land he is giving you" (Deut 28:1-8).
Life is to be a lived vertically before the Lord, not horizontally. When we
worry about the activities of others, we acknowledge our lack of faith in
the One who called us.

The Power of Forgiveness Part 2
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
The LORD said to me again, 'Go, show your love to a woman loved by someone
else, who has been unfaithful to you. In the same way the LORD loves the
people of Israel, even though they worship other gods and love to eat the
raisin cakes.' So I bought her for six ounces of silver and ten bushels of
barley. Then I told her, 'You must wait for me for many days. You must not
be a prostitute, and you must not have sexual relations with any other man.
I will act the same way toward you.' In the same way Israel will live many
days without a king or leader, without sacrifices or holy stone pillars,
and without the holy vest or an idol. After this, the people of Israel will
return to the LORD their God and follow him and the king from David's
family. In the last days, they will turn in fear to the LORD, and he will
bless them (Hosea 3:1-5, NCV).
Friend to Friend
True forgiveness always requires sacrifice on our part – a truth that may
often seem unfair in human terms. After all, we are the ones who have been
hurt. Why should we have to sacrifice anything? Shouldn't the people who
hurt us be the ones who have to make the first move and offer the biggest
sacrifice? True forgiveness – God's forgiveness – defies human logic and
cannot be explained in human terms. Human forgiveness is easier but a
shallow substitute and cheap imitation for the amazing power of God's
forgiveness.
Hosea was married to a woman who hurt and humiliated him. Scripture does
not say Gomer ever repented and asked for Hosea's forgiveness. But that did
not stop Hosea from forgiving her. In fact, Hosea sacrificed his pride and
his human rights in order to forgive Gomer. Hosea's forgiveness also
required a financial sacrifice.
· Hosea had to sacrifice materially.
Hosea had to buy back his own wife. Seriously? Gomer was damaged goods and
she definitely was not on sale. The price was substantial. Six ounces of
silver and ten bushels of barley was the going price of a slave and since
prophets are definitely not in the top income bracket, the payment was a
great financial sacrifice for Hosea. Gomer's own sin had placed her in
bondage. Even so, Hosea was willing to make a financial sacrifice in order
to fulfill his commitment in marriage. Love that never gives up is willing
to pay a price, to sacrifice so people in bondage can be set free.
Mother Teresa said, "Love, to be real must cost. It must hurt. It must
empty us of self!" The words of King David reveal the essence of love and
forgiveness. "No, I must pay the full price. I won't give an offering that
costs me nothing" (1 Chronicles 21:24, ICB).
Hosea could have played it safe. Nowhere in Scripture does it suggest Gomer
wanted his forgiveness, and Hosea had no guarantee she would not do the
very same thing again. He took a huge risk in bringing Gomer home. What
passes for true love is often little more than a convenient emotional
arrangement. Someone is kind to us so we are kind in return. Someone treats
us badly, so we don't get mad, we get even. Sound fair? Seem reasonable?
Yes, but only in human terms. Love that never fails goes beyond reason and
refuses to settle for justice alone but insists on granting mercy.
I love the story of a doctor who told the little boy that he could save his
sister's life by giving her some of his blood. "Johnny, are you sure you
want to give your blood for Mary?" the doctor asked. The boy hesitated for
several moments; his lips trembled as tears filled his eyes. His parents
and the doctor assured Johnny that the procedure would not be very painful
and would be over with quickly. Finally, he smiled bravely and said, "Sure
Doc. I'll give my blood for my sister." As the transfusion took place, the
little girl began to respond immediately. Parents, doctors and nurses
erupted into cheers and applause. When the ordeal was almost over, Johnny's
brave little voice was heard, "Hey, Doc, when do I die?" A stunned silence
fell across the room. The doctor and parents suddenly realized what Johnny
was thinking. Johnny thought when he gave his blood to his sister, he would
die – a very high price he was willing to pay.
Love that never fails is willing to pay a great price and make a great
sacrifice. Love that never fails is yours to receive and yours to give.
Let's Pray
Father, I come to You today, asking first for Your forgiveness for the sin
in my life. I choose to turn from that sin and obey you. Thank You for your
grace and mercy. Give me the strength and power to extend that same mercy
and grace to those in my life who have hurt me.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

~MY BELOVED~
My Beloved is mine and I am His
Once upon an old rugged cross, He died in our place
His gift was freely given, that we might have new life,
His love is the greatest, we could ever embrace.
Jesus is our candle in the wind
Who burns brightly from day to day,
His Holy Spirit guides, as in Him we abide,
He walks before us, all along life's narrow way.
The beauty of earthly roses could never compare
With the fragrance of Jesus, whose grace forever blooms,
He is the Rose of Sharon ......The Lily of the valley so fair,
Our Savior arose in victory, over death and the tomb.
My beloved is the 'Bright and Morning star'
He lights up my life with His love,
Abundant joy He bestows, as His blessings flow,
His name is 'Wonderful'......He is heaven's Holy Dove.
There is a special place within my heart and soul
His temple, I always long to be,
His amazing grace is given, to every tribe and race,
Only our Beloved Savior can save souls and set free.
One day our Beloved shall split the Eastern skies
Jesus will call for His Bride in the air,
In the twinkling of an eye, we shall joyfully rise,
We shall meet our Savior, forever His glory we shall share.
How truly great you are, O Lord, my God
We worship and adore you, as King of all Kings,
May you be glorified, as in You we abide,
You love has given us new life. You make our hearts to sing.

Come near to God and He will come near to you. Wash your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and
wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble
yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up. --James 4:8-10
Many years ago, J. Wilbur Chapman, an American evangelist and pastor, wrote
the following about the impact of prayer in his life:
"At one of our missions in England the audience was exceedingly small, but
I received a note saying that an American missionary was going to beseech
the Lord on behalf of our work. The man was known as 'Praying Hyde.' Almost
immediately the tide changed. Crowds began to pack the hall, and many
accepted Christ as their Savior.
"Meeting Mr. Hyde later, I said, 'Brother, I want you to pray for me
personally.' He came to my room, turned the key in the door, and dropped to
his knees. He waited five minutes without a single syllable coming form his
lips. I felt hot tears as they began running down my face. Although he had
said nothing, I knew I was in the presence of God. Then with upturned face
and with eyes streaming, he said, 'O God!' and was still again.
"When he seemed to sense that he was in full communion with the Lord, there
came from the depths of his heart petitions such as I had never heard. I
rose from my knees to know what real prayer was!"
Jesus warned us not to pray like hypocrites who "love to pray standing in
the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. …But when you
pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is
unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you"
(Matthew 6:5-6).
PRAYER CHALLENGE: Today, go into a room by yourself and spend some time
alone in the presence of the Lord in prayer without any distractions. Ask
for His Holy Spirit to move, and then wait and listen for His still, small
voice.

Our Convictions Our Defense
Romans 14:20-23
A person of conviction has become convinced, by either evidence or
argument, that his beliefs are true. Today, most men and women would rather
live by preference than conviction. They choose to believe something based
on certain conditions and circumstances. When the situation changes, so
does their loyalty. In other words, a lot of people vacillate on issues
that require a firm resolve.
Contrast this wishy-washy approach with the mindset of the great men and
women of Scripture. Despite many years of unfair treatment, Joseph never
wavered in his commitment to godly principles . As a result, he was in the
right place at the right time to ensure Israel's survival (Gen. 50:20).
Daniel, another righteous man in an idolatrous land, earned the trust of
foreign kings by standing firm in his beliefs (Dan. 1:20). When his friends
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego also refused to compromise their beliefs,
they influenced a king to recognize Jehovah as the one true God (3:29).
As these biblical heroes show, godly convictions can withstand the changing
winds of opinion and the persuasive arguments of opponents. If we are
grounded in the Word and trust what God has said, we can stand firm in our
beliefs. Confidence breeds the courage to remain strong amid conflict.
Instead of following your own preferences, choose to live by godly
conviction. The Bible has much to say about the most important aspects of
your life. See if God's principles and promises hold true. Through prayer
and study, allow Him to firmly root you in solid biblical convictions.

THE outward features of our life may not be all that we should choose
them to be; there may be things we wish for that never come to us;
there may be much we wish away that we cannot part from. The persons
with whom we live, the circumstances by which we are surrounded, the
duties we have to perform, the burdens we have to bear, may not only
be other than what we should have selected for ourselves, but may even
seem inconsistent with that formation and discipline of character
which we honestly wish to promote. Knowing us better than we know
ourselves, fully understanding how greatly we are affected by the
outward events and conditions of life, He has ordered them with a view
to our entire and final, not only our immediate, happiness; and
whenever we can be safely trusted with pastures that are green, and
waters that are still, in the way of earthly blessing, the Good
Shepherd leads us there.

Results of the Lack of Faith
Genesis 16:6-16
After Hagar fled from Sarah's presence, before Ishmael was born, the
angel of the Lord said to her, "Behold, thou art with child, and shalt
bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath
heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be
against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall
dwell in the presence of all his brethren" (Gen. 16:11,12).
The Arabs are the descendants of Ishmael, and this prophecy of
international trouble is being fulfilled today.
The centuries-old conflict between the Arabs and the Jews had its
beginning when Abraham tried to use the means of the flesh to produce
a spiritual result.
Not only did Abraham's sin produce family and international trouble,
but it also produced spiritual trouble. In the New Testament the
Apostle Paul wrote of this trouble in Galatians 4:22-26.
When churches or believers leave the simplicity and liberty that is in
Christ and return to the works of the flesh, there is nothing but
bondage. When religious ceremonies or other activities are substituted
for the work of the Holy Spirit, bondage results.
From this incident in Genesis we see the sad results of relying on the
flesh to bring about spiritual results.
"And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief"
(Matt. 13:58).

There is no greater contrast in all the Bible than the love and
patience of God with the general disregard for that love and patience
by men. Perhaps this theme is more clearly seen in the prophecy of
Jeremiah than in any other. Jeremiah is one of the most colorful
figures in Hebrew history. This is undoubtedly due to the fact that we
know more about his personality and character than we do about any
other Old Testament prophets. Called of God when he was but a child
(Jeremiah 1:6), Jeremiah knew personally the love and patience of God
and prophesied for Jehovah for nearly half a century. His concern was
to bring Israel back to God in repentance and faith. Tragically, he
stood in the mainstream of an ungrateful people who were rushing to
certain destruction, yet they sought not God.
Jehovah was so concerned for His people that He commissioned Jeremiah
to "stand in the gate of the LORD'S house, and proclaim there this
word, and say, Hear the word of the LORD, all ye of Judah, that enter
in at these gates to worship the LORD" (Jeremiah 7:2). God would not
permit His people to face imminent destruction and death without the
opportunity to repent and be restored. Jeremiah's task was to stand
between the Jews and certain destruction.
In a delightful picture of the concern of Jehovah for His people,
Jeremiah 7 twice indicates that God did not simply commission the
prophet and then withdraw Himself from interest in the Jews. Jeremiah
7:13 says, "And now, because ye have done all these works, saith the
LORD, and I spake unto you, rising up and speaking but ye heard not;
and I called you, but ye answered not." It is natural for anyone who
has loved ones facing pending danger to show diligence in dealing with
it. The same is true for Jehovah God. It is no impassive God who is
seen here. God takes a profound interest in His people. This indicates
that God is not disengaged from His people or the affairs that affect
them. He mourns over their sin and rejoices in their salvation. Still
they do not heed His call for repentance and thus He must deliver them
into the hand of the enemy.
The expression of Jehovah's rising early is strengthened in verse 25.
Here He reminds His people, "Since the day that your fathers came
forth out of the land of Egypt unto this day I have even sent unto you
all My servants the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them."
It is not the prophets alone who are said to rise early with the
message of repentance, but God Himself. Day after day, He rises to
recommission anew these prophets with their life-changing message.
And what will be Israel's response to this consistent love and concern
of Jehovah? Joshua 7:26 indicates, "Yet they hearkened not unto Me,
nor inclined their ear, but hardened their neck; they did worse than
their fathers." What a contrast! God calls and commissions prophets to
bring His message to a wayward people. He rises early every morning
and sends forth His prophets. Still, day after day, His people do not
hearken unto Him but harden their necks and become even more stubborn
in their sin.
Today God is just as concerned about us as He was about Old Testament
Israel. He showers His mercy on us as He did on them. He warns us of
our sin as He warned the Jews. And much like them, we do not listen,
nor do we heed the warnings of those whom He has raised to call us to
repentance. Remember, before we arose early to seek God today, He had
already risen to prepare this day for us. In response to His great
love and concern for us, let us serve Him faithfully today.
MORNING HYMN
Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heav'n to earth come down;
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling,
All Thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, Thou art all compassion,
Pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation,
Enter ev'ry trembling heart.
