January 18, 2012

VERSE:
For you know that it was not with perishable things such as
silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life
handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious
blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
-- 1 Peter 1:18-19

THOUGHT:
A: "How much did it cost?" B: "What? This old thing? This sack
of bones and blood and brain? This heart and mind and soul that
live inside?" A: "Yeah! How much did it cost?" B: "It cost the
greatest gift of heaven to redeem it and make me whole. That's how
much God thinks of me. Incredible, isn't it?!"

PRAYER:
Father, I am bewildered, humbled, and thrilled to know that you
value me so highly. Forgive me for cheapening myself with sin, for
dwelling on things that are petty, and for chasing after things
that are worthless. Thank you for loving me so. By your Spirit,
please help me live up to the value you see in me and aspire to the
lofty life you call me to live. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Bad Grief
Day 224

Grief is a process. A process is a series of actions and gradual
changes that one progresses through. The grieving process involves
forward movement-going from one emotion, one level, one day to the
next.

There is such a thing as good grief. It involves identifying the loss,
recognizing the grieving process, accepting that life will never be
the same, and continuing forward on the journey. There is also bad
grief: continually thinking about the person who died and refusing to
let him or her go.

"Let me give you an example of bad grief," says Dr. Erwin Lutzer.
"Here's a woman whose husband has been dead for fifteen years, and she
will not touch his study, but leaves it exactly as he left it, fearing
that if she were to touch it or sell the books, it would be a sign of
dishonor and disrespect.

"Let me give you another example of bad grief. A woman convinced her
husband to go to a concert that he didn't want to go to. So they go to
this concert, and he's killed in a car accident. For fourteen years
she goes to his grave every single morning, bemoaning the fact that
she convinced him to go to something that he didn't want to go to.
That grief is not of God. That is bad grief."

Grief that is not of God will not bring healing and peace. Humble
yourself before God, and seek His forgiveness if you have a
preoccupation with your lost loved one and have refused to let him or
her go.

"Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may
lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares
for you" (1 Peter 5:6-7).

Holy God, it is hard to let go. Forgive me for holding on so tightly.
Help me to release my feelings and fears and to look for Your ray of
sunshine each day. Amen.

Listening to God
Renee Swope

"So Jesus explained, 'I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by
himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the
Father does, the Son also does.'" John 5:19 (NLT)

I want to be a woman who listens to God. But, sometimes I'm not sure
if it's God talking or just me thinking.

And if I'm really honest, when I do sense Him whispering to my heart,
I'm not always crazy about what I sense He's telling me to do. Like
the time I knew without a doubt God wanted me to share my testimony
publicly. I pretty much ran from that assignment for a decade.

Yet, I've learned over the past twenty something years when I listen
to God, I discover His best for me. And, I grow my trust in Him.

I've seen again and again that His ways lead to His goodness, and when
I follow Him, His mercy follows me. At the end of my ten-year
spiritual sprint away from what scared me most - sharing the story of
my brokenness with others - I surrendered to what God was calling me
to do.

I started listening closely to Him and trusting completely in Him, so
that I could experience a day-by-day abiding in His presence and
promises. From there, His plans unfolded day-by-day.

I honestly thought I had been listening to Him all that time. But one
day while I was seeking God's direction in some decisions, the Holy
Spirit showed me I had a habit of asking God what He wanted me to do
and where He wanted me to invest my time. Then I went about doing it,
without depending on Him for direction each step of the way.

Oftentimes, I would seek God for the larger plans in life, convinced
that if I figured out what He wanted me to do then I could become the
person He created me to be, and fulfill the calling He had for me.

Have you ever thought: "If only God would show me what job to take;
what man to marry; what church to attend; what ministry to serve in -
then my life would be complete and I could trust Him with my whole
heart?"

The problem is, sometimes we get a glimpse of where God wants us to go
and then assume we know how to get there.

Or we get a peek at what He wants us to do and think we know how He
wants us to do it. How many times have I made that mistake and then
wondered why I wasn't getting anywhere?

Over time, God has taught me that He wants my spiritual ears more than
my spiritual efforts.

He wants daily dependence, interaction and intimacy with me. And He is
more concerned with my character than what I schedule for Him on my
calendar.

In today's key verse, Jesus tells us that He depended on the Father
for the large and fine print written in His life plan. He listened
closely and obeyed quickly: "...'I tell you the truth, the Son can do
nothing by himself; He does only what He sees the Father doing.
Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.'" (John 5:19 NLT)

Like Jesus, we will discover God's purpose for our lives through
dependent hearts that seek to listen to His - day by day, moment by
moment. Let's position our hearts, minds and souls to hear Him speak
to us today.

Dear Lord, I want to become a woman who listens to You. I come to You
today with a seeking heart, asking not only for direction but for
discernment, humility and dependence on You -- each step of the way.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Reflect and Respond:
Do I read my Bible so God's words and ways are familiar to me? Do I
intentionally listen for God's voice, or do I assume I know what He
wants me to do?

. Take time to pull away from distractions and quiet your thoughts,
even if it's just 10-15 minutes.
. Tell God you want to hear Him speak - through a verse, a song, a
person or a whisper in your soul.
. Talk to Him about your plans for the day and ask Him to show you
His. Give Him permission to interrupt your thoughts and agenda and
lead you in a different direction if He wants to.
. Then get ready for a day filled with adventure and companionship as
you walk hand in hand with your Maker.

Power Verses:
Psalm 119:16, "I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word." (NIV)

John 14:31, "...but I will do what the Father requires of me, so that
the world will know that I love the Father." (NLT)

1 Samuel 3:10, "The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other
times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is
listening.'" (NIV)

them all as worthless without the inward certainty and experience of
Jesus' love.

Following at a Distance
But Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he
went in and sat with the servants to see the end. (Matthew 26:58)
Distance from the Lord is at the heart of every fall.
For example, you can show me a marriage that is falling apart and cite all
of the various reasons for it, but I will tell you exactly where it broke
down. It broke down in the couple's communication. Something happened, and
the friendship their marriage was built on and the companionship they once
enjoyed isn't what it used to be. Then all of those other problems found
their way into a fractured marriage.
The same can be said of our relationship with God. We get away from the
Lord in closeness. We are no longer starting the day with Bible study and
prayer. We are too busy doing other things, and then other problems
develop. And we find ourselves following at a distance.
That is one of the steps Peter took toward his denial of the Lord. The
Bible tells us that after Jesus was arrested, "Peter followed Him at a
distance to the high priest's courtyard. And he went in and sat with the
servants to see the end" (Matthew 26:58, emphasis added).
There are people like this in church. They are usually late to the service
and the first ones to leave. They are usually sitting in the back row. They
want to live in two worlds, so they are following at a distance. That is
what happened to Peter.
I heard the story of a little boy who fell out of bed in the middle of the
night. When his mom asked him what happened, he said, "Well, I think I
stayed too close to the place where I got in."
And that is the same reason we fall away from the Lord. We stayed too close
to the place where we got in.

Summary sentence: Do you have closeness or distance in your following of
Jesus?

"God's Word to You"!

God's Word to You today is found in Hebrews 13:20-21

20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus,
the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21
equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that
which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory
forever and ever. Amen.

I mentioned my brother Moises has gone home to Jesus. It amazes me how God
works in His children's lives. See I met Moises in 2008 on my trip to
Panama. He was an amazing man filled with love for others, compassion and
a heart for Jesus.

He was an excited man who was frank and told things like they were. I
remember first hearing him address the pastor we were going to work with.
His first words to them were asking how they felt about their churches. He
mentioned several items about things and desires they had for their
church.

And then he proceeded to advise them how they were going down the wrong
path by claiming the church was theirs. It is God's church and they are
the leaders and caretakers.

And he lived a life of finding Jesus, thanking Jesus, growing like a child
with Jesus, having hard times with Jesus, being abundantly full of joy with
Jesus and finally going home to Jesus.

My music minister approached me two weeks ago about singing a song on what
would have been this last Sunday nite. Just before the weekend he asked if
I could change it to this Sunday. Last Sunday my brother Moises went
home.

This Sunday I will sing a song about each of the points I just wrote about
Moises walk with Christ.

I will sing to praise my Lord and my heart will sing in memory of my
brother.

Amazing how God works .

me n' God love ya

Morning

Him that was to come.

Jesus . . . made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death,
. . . that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.--One
died for all.--As by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by
the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was made] a
living spirit.--That [was] not first which is spiritual, but that which is
natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.--God said, Let us make man
in our image, after our likeness. . . . So God created man in his [own]
image, in the image of God created he him.--God hath in these last days
spoken to us by [his] Son, the brightness of [his] glory, and the express
image of his person.--Thou hast given him power over all flesh.

The first man [is] from the earth, earthy: the second man [is] the Lord
from heaven. As [is] the earthy, such [are] they also that are earthy: and
as [is] the heavenly, such [are] they also that are heavenly.

Evening

The things which shall be after this.

It is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into
the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love
him. But God hath revealed [them] to us by his Spirit.--The Spirit of truth
. . . will show you things to come.

Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they [also]
who pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him.
Even so, Amen.

I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them who are
asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others who have no hope. For if we
believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also who sleep in
Jesus will God bring with him. . . . For the Lord himself shall descend
from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the
trumpet of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we who are
alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to
meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Morning

"There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God."-Hebrews 4:9

How different will be the state of the believer in heaven from what it is
here! Here he is born to toil and suffer weariness, but in the land of the
immortal, fatigue is never known. Anxious to serve his Master, he finds his
strength unequal to his zeal: his constant cry is, "Help me to serve Thee,
O my God." If he be thoroughly active, he will have much labour; not too
much for his will, but more than enough for his power, so that he will cry
out, "I am not wearied of the labour, but I am wearied in it. " Ah!
Christian, the hot day of weariness lasts not for ever; the sun is nearing
the horizon; it shall rise again with a brighter day than thou hast ever
seen upon a land where they serve God day and night, and yet rest from
their labours. Here, rest is but partial, there, it is perfect. Here, the
Christian is always unsettled; he feels that he has not yet attained.
There, all are at rest; they have attained the summit of the mountain; they
have ascended to the bosom of thei!
r God. Higher they cannot go. Ah, toil-worn labourer, only think when thou
shalt rest for ever! Canst thou conceive it? It is a rest eternal; a rest
that "remaineth." Here, my best joys bear "mortal" on their brow; my fair
flowers fade; my dainty cups are drained to dregs; my sweetest birds fall
before Death's arrows; my most pleasant days are shadowed into nights; and
the flood-tides of my bliss subside into ebbs of sorrow; but there,
everything is immortal; the harp abides unrusted, the crown unwithered, the
eye undimmed, the voice unfaltering, the heart unwavering, and the immortal
being is wholly absorbed in infinite delight. Happy day! happy! when
mortality shall be swallowed up of life, and the Eternal Sabbath shall
begin.

Evening

"He expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning
himself."-Luke 24:27
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus had a most profitable journey.
Their companion and teacher was the best of tutors; the interpreter one of
a thousand, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. The
Lord Jesus condescended to become a preacher of the gospel, and He was not
ashamed to exercise His calling before an audience of two persons, neither
does He now refuse to become the teacher of even one. Let us court the
company of so excellent an Instructor, for till He is made unto us wisdom
we shall never be wise unto salvation.
This unrivalled tutor used as His class-book the best of books. Although
able to reveal fresh truth, He preferred to expound the old. He knew by His
omniscience what was the most instructive way of teaching, and by turning
at once to Moses and the prophets, He showed us that the surest road to
wisdom is not speculation, reasoning, or reading human books, but
meditation upon the Word of God. The readiest way to be spiritually rich in
heavenly knowledge is to dig in this mine of diamonds, to gather pearls
from this heavenly sea. When Jesus Himself sought to enrich others, He
wrought in the quarry of Holy Scripture.
The favoured pair were led to consider the best of subjects, for Jesus
spake of Jesus, and expounded the things concerning Himself. Here the
diamond cut the diamond, and what could be more admirable? The Master of
the House unlocked His own doors, conducted the guests to His table, and
placed His own dainties upon it. He who hid the treasure in the field
Himself guided the searchers to it. Our Lord would naturally discourse upon
the sweetest of topics, and He could find none sweeter than His own person
and work: with an eye to these we should always search the Word. O for
grace to study the Bible with Jesus as both our teacher and our lesson!

Where to find your true worth
January 18, 2012
But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day
is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
2 Peter 3:8
A story is told about a man who was talking with the Lord and said,
"Lord, is it true that with You, a day is like a thousand years and a
thousand years is like a day?" And the Lord said, "Yes, that's true."
"Does that mean that a penny to you is like a million dollars and a
million dollars like a penny?" And the Lord said, "Yes, a million
dollars to you is like a penny to me."
The man said, "Well, Lord, since a million dollars to you is like a
penny to me, could I have a penny?" And the Lord said, "Yes… in a
minute."
When it comes to what you and I consider precious such as time, money,
or anything else of value, in the grand scheme of things it's really
worthless. You can be the richest person in the world, but on the day
you meet God, all your earthly possessions will count for nothing.
It's been said that that's why you never see a hearse towing a U-Haul
trailer!
Compared to everything God has, you really have very little. So when
you count your real value, remember that God sees past material wealth
and petty possessions into your very soul. And with Christ on your
side, you can have the only kind of riches that really matter in His
eyes!

DON'T BE DECEIVED INTO THINKING YOUR VALUE IS FOUND IN THE THINGS OF
THIS WORLD. THE ONLY RICHES THAT MATTER ARE THOSE YOU HAVE IN CHRIST!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Good News

The news source is very reliable
It's pure truth is undeniable,
My source of news is Heaven sent
To alter lives being misspent.

Inside is news bulletins for today
The Book will show a fresh way,
When you're feeling less than zero
The Bible offers a shielding hero.

The bad news is you dilly-dally
Lingering down in the valley,
The good news is Jesus is there
And your burdens he will bear.

Rise up above the mountain-top
With Jesus the misery will stop,
You can't climb mountains alone,
Walk with Jesus the path shown.

The bad news is you have sank
Your daily life is in the tank,
Good news! There is expert help
And a prayer is the first step.

The bad news is you'll stay mired
Realizing nothing you've desired
Until you know the truthful news
And accept The Bible's good views.

The bad news is mortals will waver
Even though their in Gods' favor
But the good news is when you fail
Prayer is the mode for safe sail.

The bad news? There is indeed a Hell
But there is glorious Heaven as well
And for those who's Savior is Jesus
That's the good news for all of us.

PATHS
poem by Anne R. C. Neale

There is no road block on Life's Path,
It has no ending at all,
Your Spirit moves forward to Heaven's portal
Where you will meet God with you Spirit and Soul.

There is a point where you will change
From a physical life to a Spirituals one,
God programmed everything that there is
And God's Will will be surely done.

There maybe potholes or bumps on Life's road,
But you will move forward every day,
There is no turning around you see,
Your are destined to meet God come what may.

So enjoy your life, Follow God's Ten Rules
You'll find your life will then be great,
Love and help your " sisters and your brothers',
One day you'll be "called " to Heaven's gate.

Read | Jeremiah 17:5-8

An acorn needs nutrients and time to grow into a tall, sturdy
oak tree. Likewise, men and women of conviction develop gradually
through committed Bible study and prayer. Ready to get planted firmly
in biblical truth? Here's how:

Make a list of issues for which you need to form a conviction.
Here are questions to help you get started: Do you consider the Bible
true and trustworthy? Do you think that believing in Jesus Christ is
the only way to be saved? What is the Holy Spirit's role in the lives
of believers and unbelievers? Are we to forgive others in every
situation? How should Christians approach finances? What's your
purpose in life? What is your role in the church and at work? How
should you think and act regarding social issues like capital
punishment, abortion, and racism?

It is my hope that these questions will open the eyes of those
who haven't contemplated how their personal philosophies have
developed. It's time to change that. Study the Bible and make God's
Word the cornerstone of your thinking. A concordance will point you to
scriptures that relate to the above topics. Evaluate what the Bible
says rather than looking at an issue through the lens of personal
preference. Ask, What does God say? rather than What does this mean to
me?

Once you know what God says, you have a choice to make: Believe
Him and commit to living according to your conviction, or continue
being tossed by waves of doubt and indecision (James 1:6). Root
yourself in God's Word and be called one of His oaks of righteousness
(Isa. 61:3).

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

January 18
Christ and His Children

When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his
seed. (Isaiah 53:10)
Our Lord Jesus has not died in vain. His death was sacrificial: He
died as our substitute, because death was the penalty of our sins.
Because His substitution was accepted of God, He has saved those for
whom He made His soul a sacrifice. By death He became like the corn of
wheat which bringeth forth much fruit. There must be a succession of
children unto Jesus; He is "the Father of the everlasting age." He
shall say, "Behold, I and the children whom Thou hast given me."
A man is honored in his sons, and Jesus hath His quiver full of these
arrows of the mighty. A man is represented in his children, and so is
the Christ in Christians. In his seed a man's life seems to be
prolonged and extended; and so is the life of Jesus continued in
believers.
Jesus lives, for He sees His seed. He fixes His eye on us, He delights
in us, He recognizes us as the fruit of His soul travail. Let us be
glad that our Lord does not fail to enjoy the result of His dread
sacrifice, and that He will never cease to feast His eyes upon the
harvest of His death. Those eyes which once wept for us are now
viewing us with pleasure. Yes, He looks upon those who are looking
unto Him. Our eyes meet! What a joy is this!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Maintain Confidence in Uncertain Times
by Jane Powell

"Confidence comes from your internal power plant."

Confidence is a strong, powerful force. When it is part of
your heart, you have the ability to conquer any obstacles life may
throw at you.

Undoubtedly, situations will come up where you may feel
uncertain or less confident. Don't let doubtful feelings stop you.
It's up to you and nobody else to keep going in times of uncertainty.

There is a saying, "Fake it till you make it." You can
pretend to be what you want to be until you grow into it. Try it. It's
what a lot of successful women admit to doing when they are unsure.

It doesn't take long before the power of your confidence
resurfaces and you're back on track to achieving your goals.

DO-OVERS

Even if you're not from Washington D.C. you may have heard of former
Mayor Anthony Williams. He has a remarkable story. Williams was born
to an unwed teen who gave him up. He was known as a "problem child"
in foster care. By age three, little Anthony had still never spoken
a word. It seemed that a pattern for his life was set, that is,
until two warm and caring people took a chance on him.

Anthony was taken in by an opera-singing postal clerk and her
equally generous-hearted husband. He soon began to speak and
eventually thrived in their home. He excelled academically and later
attended both Harvard and Yale Universities.

In 1998, he came from obscurity to win 66% of the vote to become
mayor in one of the world's major cities. In his inaugural address,
Williams said: "Forty-four years ago, my parents adopted me and gave
me a second chance. I feel this city has now adopted me and I will
give to it everything my parents taught me about love, service,
commitment."

It's no doubt that, had he never been adopted into his particular
family, his life would have been wholly different. He was saved by a
second chance. And haven't each of us been given second chances? He
got a do-over on his birth family. Haven't we been given do-overs on
relationships, jobs, blown opportunities and the like? Quite often
second chances are the result of the generosity of someone who cares
a great deal. And sometimes we are saved by those second chances.

Author Dr. Seuss says in his book THE LORAX, "Unless someone like
you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's
not."

I recently came across a story of a young American woman who was
saved by a do-over. During the second World War, she lost her
husband. He died in India of a tropical disease and she became
despondent. In time, despair turned into depression and she lost all
interest in living. She just didn't care anymore.

She booked passage on a ship back to America. On the voyage, she
became acquainted with a seven-year-old boy who, like her, was all
alone. His parents had died in the fighting in Burma. He seemed to
want to be with the young woman, but her pain would not allow it.
She wanted nothing to do with him and avoided him whenever possible.
She felt so ravaged by loss, that she was unable to get outside of
herself and care about anyone else. And she certainly did not have
the energy to take on someone else's problems.

Then one night the ship was torpedoed. The young woman made her way
to the deck and prepared herself to go down with the doomed vessel.
Some part of her actually welcomed it as an escape from her pain.
The child, too, came on deck. He shivered with cold and fright. When
he spotted the woman, he came over and clung to her.

That was when a lump of ice melted somewhere deep inside her. She
put her arms around the child and led him to one of the lifeboats.
For several days, as they waited to be rescued, she held him and he
held her. Years later her friends would say that they didn't know
whether the woman saved the boy, or the boy saved the woman. They
each gave the other a second chance at life and a do-over on love.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going
to get better. It's not."

But it's the people who give do-overs who truly change the world.

Steve Goodier

Where is the best place to start, when you're determined to
make real improvements in your life? Where is the best place
to start, when you're totally committed to following your
dream?

The best place to start is precisely where you are. The best
time to start is the moment you are in.

As difficult and challenging as your situation may be, in
that situation is a way to move forward. From where you are
right now, there is a path that leads to precisely where you
would like to be.

Don't waste your time wishing for a more favorable starting
point. Instead, make use of the starting point you have, and
get going.

Rather than complaining about not having enough, use your
creativity and imagination to become more and more effective
with what you do have. Devote your energy to creating new
value in the present, not to resentment of the past.

This is the best place to start, because this is the place
from which you can start right now. From here you can
literally go anywhere, so go ahead, take that first step and
don't look back.

DAILY-E-VOTIONAL
BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART
Pastor Cecil A. Thompson
January 18, 2012

OUT OF THE PITS!
Psalm 42:5, 8
"Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your
hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God. By day
the LORD directs His love, at night His song is with me a prayer to
the God of my life."

Have you ever had the blue funks, the down days, the blahs? Remember
that old lament, "Nobody loves me everybody hates me, I'm going to eat
some angle worms. Down goes a fat one, down goes a skinny one. Oh, how
they wiggle when they squirm?" Boy! That is one from way back in my
boyhood days! Aren't you glad that I share such spiritually profound
gems with you?

Psalm 42 is credited to the Sons of Korah. The Sons of Korah member
who wrote this particular Psalm, seems to have been depressed when he
wrote it. It is interesting that there is a conversation here with his
soul. It is a picture of a person who is talking to himself. Have you
ever done that?

I once heard that it is permissible to talk to yourself. That's
right—you can talk to yourself all you want. The problem arises when
you answer yourself and then the conversation turns into an argument!
If and when this happens --- you're in trouble! Here is an important
principle that I learned long ago: When someone is depressed, the last
thing you want to tell them is,"Cheer up!" That is a good way for you
to find yourself on the receiving end of a tirade!

In today's Scripture the Psalmist is not simply moaning and whining
about his emotional state, he proceeds to give his condition over to
the Lord. Listen to the Lord's song to bring you out of the pit of
despair.

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, trust Him completely and
be a blessing.

January 18
Psalm 8:5
Thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned
him with glory and honour.
There are not many days that go by where I feel very holy. As much as
I might like to be a reflection of Jesus Christ, I am afraid that my
image is a very dim one at best. For each success I have at walking in
the footsteps of Christ, I have a dozen failures where I have strayed
from the path. And through it all, God still loves me totally. In my
imperfection, God still reveres me and thinks I am good. It boggles
the mind to realize that human beings are God's pride and joy. Despite
the grief and frustration we must be, God believes in us and helps us
to be the best people that we can be. He loves His children and
rejoices in their victories. Our Lord created us just lower than the
angels; the most perfect of His creations.

Despair not. No matter how inadequate we might feel, we are considered
beautiful by our Creator, and in the end it is His opinion, not ours,
that makes all the difference in the world.

Prayer: Grant me spiritual wings that I might soar as an angel on this
earth, O Lord. Help me to live up to the intention You had at my
creation. Let me wear my crown wisely and proudly, to Your glory.
Amen.

*Reason Together*

by Phil Ware

"Come now, let us reason together,' says the Lord. 'Though your sins are
like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as
crimson, they shall be like wool." Isaiah 1:18
Thoughts on today's verse
Nothing stains quite like sin. It not only leaves a stain in our heart but
a residue in our minds. But God's grace is shown in that he doesn't just
forgive our sins, he doesn't just forget our sins, he banishes them. They
are gone. The stain is removed, the guilt is taken away. We are clean by
his grace.
Prayer:
O the joy your grace gives me! I can never thank you or praise you enough
for rerouting my life so that it will end, and begin again, in you. Through
Jesus I pray. Amen.

*Shrinking Back *
*

*
by Gail Rodgers

We met in Starbucks. She was just passing through town and it was a treat
to get together in person. As usual, we jumped in at the deep end and
wanted to share what God was teaching us these days. As she raised requests
I suggested we pray. Quietly, with open eyes, I asked God to meet the needs
of her life.
We talked more and then she said she wanted to pray for me. With not so
quiet a voice and with eyes pressed closed and hands grasping mine across
the table she lifted her heart to our Heavenly Father.
And I felt my heart shrink back. Could she pray a little quieter or a
little less intensely? I am ashamed to say I felt a twinge of embarrassment
enter my heart.
Very shortly after that God put a book in my pathway that challenged just
this very thing in my life. In essence I was denying Christ. I thought of
Peter and how easy it was for him to deny Jesus on that night of Jesus'
death. Then in my own devotions I read these words,
"For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not
delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back I
will not be pleased with him.
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who
believe and are saved." Hebrews 10: 38-39
It took me by surprise that I could find myself in that same position as
Peter found himself in ….. only I was in Starbucks where there was no
threat at all to my faith or my life.
How good God is to reveal the very nature of our hearts to us when we feel
we are being "faithful" followers. What a challenge it is to grow in our
boldness in following our Lord and Savior.
Today, whether you are a quiet Christian, a bold witness, or somewhere in
between why not join me in asking God to fill you with a greater boldness
and more courage to stand in persevering faith… one never knows when in
this world we will be called upon to stand firm. We need to be determined
not to shrink back. God will help us as we ask Him to.
Heavenly Father, Forgive me for shrinking back when You call me to
boldness. May my heart be ever more courageous to stand for You. In Jesus'
name I pray, amen.

IT IS THE LORD!

Thomas answered and said unto Him, My Lord and my God.
John 20:2

"Give Me to drink." How many of us are set upon Jesus Christ slaking
our thirst when we ought to be satisfying Him? We should be pouring
out now, spending to the last limit, not drawing on Him to satisfy
us. "Ye shall be witnesses unto Me" - that means a life of unsullied,
uncompromising and unbribed devotion to the Lord Jesus, a
satisfaction to Him wherever He places us.

Beware of anything that competes with loyalty to Jesus Christ. The
greatest competitor of devotion to Jesus is service for Him. It is
easier to serve than to be drunk to the dregs. The one aim of the
call of God is the satisfaction of God, not a call to do something
for Him. We are not sent to battle for God, but to be used by God in
His battlings. Are we being more devoted to service than to Jesus
Christ?

*Daily Devotional
* Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based
on the book of Proverbs in the Bible.* * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:*

*Proverbs 22:1-2 (KJV):
**1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour
rather than silver and gold.
2 The rich and poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.
**
**Proverbs 22:1-2 (AMP):
**1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor
rather than silver and gold.
2 The rich and poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all. **

**Thoughts for the Day:*

These verses in *Proverbs *tell us that the value of virtue in one's life
is better than being wealthy, as material prosperity will mean nothing on
judgment day. *Verse 1 *admonishes us that if we were given a choice over
great riches, or a good name and loving favor, we would be wise to choose
the later. King Solomon, who wrote the book of *Proverbs*, could certainly
testify to this, as he was given a similar choice by God in a dream.
Because he was unselfish, and made the right choice, God then gave him
riches also. Solomon could have asked for anything, but he asked for an
understanding heart to serve his people. Here is the story:

*1 Kings 3:5-14:
5 In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said,
Ask what I shall give thee.
6 And Solomon said, Thou hast showed unto thy servant David my father great
mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness,
and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this
great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it
is this day.
7 And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David
my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a
great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people,
that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy
so great a people?
10 And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
11 And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not
asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor
hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself
understanding to discern judgment;
12 Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise
and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee,
neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
13 And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches,
and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee
all thy days.
14 And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my
commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.*

Solomon certainly had the loving favor of God upon him. The "favor of God"
comes in many forms; such as protection, health, blessing, provision, and
it can also come by the favor we find with men. In the New Testament we
find that Jesus had that favor on His life. It came as He increased in
wisdom. Praying to have wisdom would be a "wise" thing to do.

*Luke 2:52: And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with
God and man.*

*Verse 2 *in our study verses tells us that one day, the rich and the poor
will meet together, as all men will have to come before the judgment seat
of God and give an account for their lives. At that time, money will not
do the rich men any good as they certainly will not be able to "pay off"
God for a favorable report about their lives. The Bible tells us that every
person will have to appear before Christ and be judged for what they have
done in this life.

*2 Corinthians
5:10-11a:
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one
may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done,
whether it be good or bad. Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we
persuade men...*

*Romans 14:10-12:
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy
brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to
me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.*

Jesus will be a righteous judge, because He gave His life on the cross for
all who would come to Him and repent of their sins and believe in Him. He
told us that He came to save men, not judge them. We are judged by the
Word of God and Jesus' commandments. When we violate the Word of God, that
is sin, and there is only One Who can take away sin and *that One is Jesus.*

*John 12:44-50:
44 Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but
on him that sent me.
45 And he that seeth me seeth him that sent me.
46 I am come a light into the world, that whosoever believeth on me should
not abide in darkness.
47 And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I
came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth
him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.
49 For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave
me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak.
50 And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatsoever I speak
therefore, even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.*

The Bible tells us that if we confess our sins, He will forgive our sins,
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We can have life everlasting when
we come to Jesus and then we will not have to dread facing Him on the day
of judgment. We will be happy to see Him because He is the One Who saved
us.

*1 John
1:8-9:
If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not
in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our
sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.*

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Heavenly Father, I am grateful that You sent Your Son to die for my
sins. Thank You for saving my soul. I am happy that my name is written in
the Book of Life. Lord, use me to tell others that their names can be
written in that same book. Should I be forgetful about praying for the
lost, please remind me to do so. I do not want to stand before You ashamed
because I have failed in my witness on this earth. I want to hear those
words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." Open my eyes and give
me eternal vision so that the things of eternity are more important to me
than just the things I see with my natural eyes. I ask this in the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.*

Coffee Break

"The Living Bible"

"Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men."
2 Corinthians 3:2

I am sure that when you read the title of this morning's devotional,
you thought I was going to be talking about one of the modern day
translations of the Bible. I am not. I am going to talk about our
lives- those who are believers, followers of Christ, Christians.

The verse above says that our lives are like a Bible that all men can
read. How do they "read" our lives? They read it through the things
we say, our actions, our attitudes, the way we respond in situations,
by our character, through the way we conduct ourselves and by the way
we love others. If we are following Christ, then our lives should be
imitating Him- what He does and how He does it. If we are doers of
God's word and not hearers only, then our conduct should line up with
its teachings. The scriptures should be coming alive in our lives so
that the meaning of the scripture is easily understood because they
see its meaning plainly through our conduct.

So what does your life say? What do others read from it? Does it
paint a confusing picture hard to understand? Is it a picture of
peace and joy? Does your life speak of defeat and misery? Does it
speak of victory? If your life is the only "Bible" that those around
you have to "read", then what are they reading? Are they reading
enough to get an understanding of the love, grace and mercy that God
has waiting for them? Are they able to read enough that they would
want to turn to the Lord and receive His great salvation? Is what
they are reading making them desire to know Him or turning them away
from Him?

Some people will never pick up the Bible to read it; some will never
go to a church; some will never turn on Christian television, for them
the only hope of "hearing and seeing" the truth of God's word will
only come through your life... is what they are seeing enough for them
to see Christ and desire to have Him?

Have a great day. If your life is the only Bible some folks will
read.... what are they reading?

Jesus, Yes - Church, No
For reading & meditation: 2 Corinthians 5:11-21
"We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God." (v. 20)
Now that we have looked at the aspects of our faith which make it
unique among all world religions, we must face some other important
issues before finally drawing to a close. Being Christians does not
mean we therefore have to believe that all other religions are
completely wrong. As C. S. Lewis pointed out: "If you are an atheist
you have to believe that the main point in all religions is simply one
huge mistake. But if you are a Christian you are free to think that
all religions, even the queerest of them, contain at least some hint
of truth. Being a Christian, however, does mean thinking that where
Christianity differs from other religions, Christianity is right and
they are wrong. As in arithmetic there is only one right answer to a
sum and all other answers are wrong. But some wrong answers are much
nearer to being right than others." While never budging from what we
believe, we must show a loving disposition toward those of other
faiths. A group
of adherents to the Muslim faith gathered outside a church in one of
Britain's northern cities shouting: "Jesus, Yes; the Church, No."
Their complaint was based on the fact that the minister and people of
that particular church had pushed thousands of leaflets through local
mailboxes stating: "Islam is a devilish religion; only the Christian
religion is of God." We can be passionate in our faith without being
discourteous to people. We may disagree with what someone believes,
but we must disagree agreeably. As one old preacher quaintly put it:
"To win some we must be winsome."

Prayer:
Father, I see from the text before me today that You want me to
implore people to come to You, not intimidate them. Make me a firm but
loving witness - one who can disagree without being disagreeable. In
Christ's Name I ask it. Amen.

How Your Garden Grows

But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who
sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
2 Corinthians 9:6

Recommended Reading
Proverbs 11:24
Evangelist D. L. Moody had just started preaching a sermon on Galatians 6:7
when a man in the audience stood up and shouted, "I don't believe it."

In 2005 scientists germinated a date palm seed that was recovered from
Herod the Great's palace atop Masada in the Judean wilderness--making it
around 2,000 years old. And a 1,300-year-old lotus seed recovered from
China was germinated in 1995.* These remarkable examples of preservation,
however, are more the exception than the rule. Seed companies today don't
normally guarantee the viability of their seed for more than a few years.

Lots of things determine the quality of a harvest: the quality of the seed,
the number of seeds sown, the quality of the soil, and the amounts of
moisture and nutrients provided. And the same is true with spiritual
harvest. God's laws of the harvest apply to the sowing we perform. If our
seeds are our good works, our financial investments, our prayers, our
study, and our service and worship, then quality and quantity are
important. No farmer would sow haphazardly and expect a beautiful,
bountiful harvest. And neither should we.

As stewards, we have been entrusted with seeds to sow. And as we sow, so
shall we reap.

Anyone can count the seeds in one apple, but only God can count the apples
in one seed.
