The Lord Stood at My Side
"No one came to my support, but everyone deserted me...But the Lord
stood at my side and gave me strength." 2 Tim 4:16, 17

Paul here lets us in on a precious truth, that when we are at our
lowest, when it seems that no one is there for us, when loneliness
overwhelms us, it is then that our precious Lord will stand by our
side and give us strength. Many of the greatest meetings with the Lord
took place when his people were lonely and at their lowest point. When
we are in a pit, like Daniel, alone and surrounded by lions, the Lord
will be there to protect us. When we find ourselves in the fiery
furnaces of life, He will stand with us. When we like Hagar, are cast
off, alone, without hope, the Lord will meet with us. When we are in
deep despair like Job, God will speak to us from the whirlwind. No
matter where we are or what the circumstances, the Lord will lift up
our downtrodden spirits by his presence. Isn¹t it just like our
precious Lord to stand with us when all others let us down, giving us
the strength to go on. So next time you are all alone and despair is
overtaking
you, look for the Lord, He will be there, standing by your side and
then you, like Paul, will find strength in Him and can go forth to
bring Him glory and honor.
Father, thank You for the reassurance that though the entire world may
desert me You will never leave me nor forsake me. You are always there
at my side and from You I can always derive the strength I need to see
me through. Help me to never lose sight of Your presence with me and
to always reach out to You and live in Your strength. Amen

A Spirit of FearFor God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of
power and of love and of a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

Fear! It sucks the life out of the soul! And when fear shapes our
lives, safety becomes our god. We worship the risk-free life!

The fear-filled cannot love deeply. Love is just too risky. No
wonder Jesus wages such a war against fear.

Don't be afraid. Take courage.

Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.

Don't let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me.

Jesus steps into the storm and asks, "Why are you fearful, O you of
little faith?"

Fear may fill the world, but it doesn't have to fill your heart!
Hysteria is not from God. And Jesus doesn't want you to live there!
The promise of Christ is ... God has not given you a spirit of fear!

1 Samuel 2:30
'. . . Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and
they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.'

A friend of mine played basketball in high school. He did everything
he could to become the best player he could be. He worked with the
coach every day. He respected the coach and did everything the coach
told him, in order to please him. His hard work paid off. He starred
on the team, and when he graduated, the coach told him he was the
finest player he had ever had the privilege of coaching. Are we doing
everything we can to please God by being the best people we can be?
When we diet, we do God honor, and He will be faithful to honor us in
return. If we ignore our bodies, the gift that God gave us, then we
show contempt for God, and He will lose respect for us.

Today's thought: Today I will do everything I can to please God!

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He called a little child and had
him stand among them. And He said: "I tell you the truth, unless you
change and become like little children, you will never enter the
kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child
is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
( Matthew 18:1-4 *NIV )

Jesus used a small child to help Him make a point with His
Disciples, and to us as well!. The point was not to be childish, but
rather childlike, with humble and sincere hearts!

When we think of it, a little child is humble and also has a pure
heart! Further, they are innocent of the evils of the World, and
trusting! For a child trusts whatever a parent tells them. They have
no preconceived ideas in their mind, and are excited to learn all that
they can with honest
curiosity.

When we apply that to ourselves, it means that we must also be
humble, and trust God with all our heart and place
all of our faith in Him. We must also have the desire to learn His
precious Word as well, believing it without preconceived ideas of our
own. For it is written: Trust in
the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways
acknowledge Him,
( Proverbs 3:5-6 )

For then you will: Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. ( 2
Peter 3:18 )

She Stands Alone
Glynnis Whitwer

"Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move
you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you
know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain." 1 Corinthians 15:58
(NIV)

I wiped beads of sweat from my forehead as I pushed the shopping cart
towards my car. Unloading my groceries as fast as I could, I hopped in
my car, hoping for quick relief. But the triple digit temperatures had
seeped inside. Blasting the air conditioning, I pulled out of the
parking lot on to a back street. That's when I saw her. Standing
alone.

A petite figure stood on the sidewalk in front of a brick building. A
black covering draped her head, leading to a black dress, black hose
and sturdy black shoes. Though she faced the building, I could see she
held a Bible. Her head bent over the cradled book as she stood in the
sweltering heat. Alone.

It took but a moment to pass her, but the image of her standing alone
branded into my brain. Oh, I've seen people standing alone in front of
buildings. But this wasn't just any building. This wasn't a bank or a
restaurant. There was no bus stop in front. The women entering this
building were broken, and weren't going in for healing.

And on that hot summer afternoon one woman stood alone praying for
them and the children they carried.

She stood alone for what she believed God told her to do that day. In
the heat. Facing discomfort, odd looks and probably some derisive
comments. Some might say her sacrifice made no difference. We'll never
know.

We'll never know whose plans were changed by her prayers, by her
willingness to stand alone.

Moments before I saw her, all I thought about was getting out of the
heat. But her conviction challenged me to ask: For what cause am I
willing to stand alone?

The sight of her touched me deeply because I know the exhaustion of
battle fatigue. I've sat in frustration rather than standing firm. I
know what weary feels like when it seems my efforts aren't making a
significant difference. I've felt cornered rather than like a
conqueror.

Some days, I'm tired of standing for what I believe in. I think others
would stand taller, or with less exhaustion. They'd deal with
discouragement better than me. They'd show mercy where I show
frustration. Maybe someone else could ... maybe they should ... take
over for me.

That's when the image of this humble woman comes to mind. And the Lord
says to me:

You just think she's standing alone. She's not. I'm right next to her.
And I'll be right next to you. Keep standing.

So I breathe in and breathe out. I picture the precious sister
standing in front of the building. Only this time, she's not alone. In
my mind I see Jesus standing beside her.

And on my own street, in my own life, in my own home, facing my own
calling, wondering if I'm making any difference, I determine to stand
another day. For a cause I believe in ... for the cause of Christ ...
wherever He calls me to stand.

Dear Lord, thank You for reminding me that when I think I'm standing
alone, I'm not. Thank You for being my hope in difficult times, and
holding me up when I want to sit this one out. Help me to remember You
are a very present help in times of trouble. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

When you purchase resources through Proverbs 31 Ministries, you touch
eternity because your purchase supports the many areas of hope-giving
ministry we provide at no cost. We wish we could, but we simply can't
compete with prices offered by huge online warehouses. Therefore, we
are extremely grateful for each and every purchase you make with us.
Thank you!

Reflect and Respond:
Have I ever been tempted to give up on something because it seems too
overwhelming? What difference would it make if I knew Jesus was
standing right beside me?

Identify an area of your life where you have given up or want to.
Perhaps you've stopped praying, or inviting, or asking to talk with
someone. Commit to do one thing this week to move forward in this
area. This could be pray for five minutes, invite once more or ask
again.

Coffee Break

"When We Fall"

"The LORD upholdeth all that fall, and raiseth up all those that be
bowed down." Psalm 145:14

"The Lord upholds all that fall." The Hebrew word for uphold here
means to uphold, to sustain, to aid. So the Lord aids those who
fall. He sustains them. He upholds them by His power and grace. He
doesn't beat down those who fall. He doesn't condemn them. He
doesn't turn His back on them. He doesn't belittle those who fall.
When we fall during a time of temptation or weakness, the Lord doesn't
walk away from us. Instead He lifts us up. He strengthens us. He
brings help and aid to us. Though we fall we are not utterly cast
down. When we fall, it is not the end of us.

Why do we think that God will turn His back and be done with us when
we fall? When my daughter was little and learning how to walk, there
were times when she would fall down. Even as she began to grow up
there were times when she didn't do as well as she should have. There
were also times that she knew better than to do some of the things
that she did, but she did them anyway. Did I turn my back on her?
Did I forsake and leave her? Did I give up on her? Did I condemn and
beat her up about it? No. And the reason why I didn't is simple-- I
love her dearly. Therefore, I want to see her succeed. I want to see
her going forward in life. Did the mistakes she made always make me
happy? No, but I still loved her. And my love for her compelled me
to help her keep going forward.

If we will treat our own children with love and care, why do we think
that God won't do the same with us? Evidently, we don't realize how
much He truly loves us. We must know that He is for us and on our
side. He wants to see you succeed. He wants to help you when you
fall. He wants to put you back on your feet and help you to learn to
stand. He is not the one who condemns us. He does not turn His back
on us.

Have you fallen? Let God pick you up. Let Him come to your aid. Let
Him sustain you and help you to continue to go forward. He loves you
and desires to get you back on your feet again.

Have a great day. God does not turn His back on us when we fall. He
wants to help us get up.

"Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out…"

Acts 3:19

In his famous book, I Surrender, Patrick Morley writes that many of
the problems in the church today lie in the misconception "that we can
add Christ to our lives, but not subtract sin. It is a change in
belief without a change in behavior."

Now, that change in behavior, which the Bible calls repentance is not
something that you change yourself. Instead, repentance is the act of
God changing you from the inside out. So, when Jesus said, "…unless
you repent, you will all likewise perish" (Luke 13:5), He meant that
repentance is a key indicator of salvation.

Many people in church today may say, "Oh, I joined the church. I
walked down an aisle. I was baptized!" But unless you repent by
saying, "God, I'm sorry for my sin," you'll never truly experience
what it means to receive the grace of God in your life.

So today, if you've never truly repented, pray and tell God that you
want to turn from sin. Let Him know that He is preeminent in your life
and that you want to follow Him instead of the ways of the world. When
you do that, you'll not only have a clear conscience, but you'll be
sure you can experience eternal life with Him!

ONE OF THE KEY ASPECTS OF THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS REPENTANCE. SO IF YOU
HAVEN'T YET, TELL GOD TODAY THAT YOU WANT TO TURN FROM SIN AND LIVE
FOR HIM!

Go to the Ant

Proverbs 6:6-8

God is a masterful Creator. He has integrated many of His principles
into the fabric of nature so that we can see His handiwork and learn
of Him (Ps. 19:1-6). If you desire to acquire wisdom, do not neglect
to look outdoors for His lessons.

Now, of course, the outdoors sometimes comes inside. If you've ever
battled ants in your kitchen or pantry, wisdom probably isn't the
first trait you would attribute to them—you probably would choose a
description more like determination. But to the lazy person, God
points out these tiny creatures as an example of wise living. Simply
consider how many characteristics of the ant people would be smart to
adopt: preparation, cooperation, perseverance, diligence, unity, and
the list goes on. So interacting with righteous men isn't the only way
to acquire wisdom. God also wants us to observe the lowly ant that He
created to work in community.

There's much to learn from the created world. By directing attention
to the birds, Jesus challenges His followers to consider the folly of
anxiety (Matt. 6:26). Birds do not reap or gather grain but rather
assume their food will be supplied as it always has been. The lesson
in this observation of nature is that the Lord who provides for birds
can be trusted to meet His people's needs as well.

Our quest for wisdom is to be rooted in Scripture and covered in
prayer. But don't overlook the many lessons unfolding right outside
the front door. Ask God for "eyes to see" (Mark 8:18). Then take every
chance to grow in understanding so your capacity to live by His
principles will be strengthened.

**Scripture*
*After these events, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
"Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield;
your reward will be very great." Genesis 15:1, HCSB*

*Thought*
To understand your bad or difficult circumstances, God's perspective is
vital. Deep trouble and crisis is often the easiest time to hear God speak.
One word He always gives in such situations, "Do not be afraid." Fear is
the human reaction toproblems. Hope is God's reaction.

*Prayer*
You who takes away all fear, look in love on me today. You know the
circumstances that bring fear, frustration, and failure to my life. Only
Your word can dispel my fears and deepen my hope. Amen.

The Confession of St. Peter

*Matthew 16:13-19<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#134ef8578db0154a_verses>
(Click
to view Bible text below.)*

Peter's confession of faith by no means places him on any pathway to
perfection. Right after this scene he fails to get why Jesus is going to be
crucified. Not so long before, watching the wind more than Jesus, he starts
to sink in the sea (14:28). He misses what the Transfiguration is all about
(17:4), falls asleep in the Garden (26:40), and-in spite of boasting about
his loyalty-denies Jesus three times (26:69-75). Some track record:
petering out one time after another. If confessing our faith (however
sincerely) doesn't make us into better people, then why do it? Bonhoeffer
in *Discipleship* encourages us to place ourselves where we know that grace
will be found. That's what Peter does. Know what? It works.

*Holy and gracious God, you who are our Rock, place us like Peter on the
rock-foundation of faith in your Son, the crucified and risen Christ. Amen.

*Matthew 16:13-19* (NRSV)

13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his
disciples, "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?"

14 And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still
others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

15 He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

17 And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh
and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven.

18 "And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church,
and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.

19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you
bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will
be loosed in heaven."

*January 18, 2012*

*Jeremiah*

*The words of Jeremiah...to whom the word of the LORD came... Jeremiah
1:1-2 (NKJV) *

*Of all the books of prophecy in the Bible, Jeremiah's is the most
personal. Large sections of Jeremiah are descriptive of what was happening
in this prophet's heart as he follows through with the task that God had
called him to...and it was one of the most difficult tasks the Lord had
ever assigned to someone. *

*From the start, God told Jeremiah his audience wouldn't receive him, and
his ministry wouldn't appear successful to outward eyes (Jeremiah 1:18).
That didn't matter, however. Jeremiah was to speak for the Lord, no matter
how unreceptive the people were. And he did. He faithfully carried out his
duties as a prophet of the Lord for more than forty years. *

*But as hard as Jeremiah's ministry was, he had a secret weapon. He had
something that always overcame the adversity he faced. He had an
uninhibited connection with God. Over and over again, the Book of Jeremiah
gives us snapshots of the back-and-forth between the prophet and the Lord.
And what we see is a man who was real with God when he was truly suffering.
Here's just a small sampling: *

*"Let me talk with You about Your judgments. Why does the way of the wicked
prosper? Why are those happy who deal so treacherously...woe is me, my
mother, that you have borne me...Why is my pain perpetual and my wound
incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will You surely be to me like an
unreliable stream, as waters that fail?" Jeremiah 12:1, 15:10, 18 (NKJV)
Do you see how real and raw Jeremiah is with the Lord? He doesn't approach
God in a detached or cold way but speaks to Him like a real
person...because He is. *

*Sadly, a lot of people don't have that kind of connection with the Lord.
Even many Christians never feel the freedom to be this honest when they
pray to Him. Don't let that be true of you. Be respectful and reverent
towards God, but at the same time be as real with Him as Jeremiah was. *

*Think About It? What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?
*

*Our Daily Devotional:*

*Results*

*1 Peter 1:6-7, NIV: "In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little
while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have
come so that your faith--of greater worth than gold, which perishes even
though refined by fire--may be proved genuine and may result in praise,
glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."*

*We are encouraged by some to seek out where God is at work, and to join
Him. As well we should. After all, it is His work we are seeking to be a
part of--not our own. "The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it"
(Ps.24:1). The world is His, the people are His, and the Church is His. It
is by His plan, His purpose, His way, and His vision that we are to serve.
It's funny how we often confuse our good intentions with God's will. Yet
God's will does not change, and His will encompasses a great many purposes
we fail to see. How often do we do what we believe God tells us, only to be
confused by the results? But even as the work is the Lord's, so are the
results. We should never do His work expecting Him to package the results
to our liking. It is His will we must seek above all else--even if it means
our labor appears fruitless to us.*

He Went on His Way Rejoicing
"And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord
caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on
his way rejoicing." Acts 8:39 The effectiveness of a faithful witness,
empowered by the Holy Spirit, is like the ripples on a pond when you
throw a rock in the middle: They multiply over and over again in all
directions. Four major results of Stephen's martyrdom are still
effective today!

First, on the very day of his martyrdom, widespread persecution of
Christians was initiated. Believers in Jerusalem fled in fear in every
direction. It was by no accident of fate that a zealous young Pharisee
by the name of Saul witnessed the martyrdom of Stephen. Saul was an
educated man and could understand the reasoning of Stephen as he
addressed the ruling elders. He saw the steadfast way Stephen faced
his accusers, the courageous way he died, his complete resignation to
God. He saw grace "manifested beyond measure" as Stephen prayed for
his enemies. God indelibly inscribed these things upon the heart of
Saul, who soon was converted and began a ministry anointed of God that
has influenced the world ever since!

Second, Saul was determined to stamp out this insidious Christian
movement, dragging Christians from their homes, torturing them, and
putting them in prison. But God caused the believers to be scattered
into the surrounding countries with their faithful witness, and the
gospel was spread in an unprecedented way. In trying to extinguish the
flames of Christianity, opponents scattered the sparks far and wide,
increasing the scope of its fire and the intensity of its message. It
has spread around the world ever since by the mighty power of God.

Third, the Holy Spirit came upon Philip, and led him to preach the
gospel in Samaria to a people who despised the Jews. Likewise, the
Jews regarded the Samaritans as unclean, unbelieving, and despicable.
Intense hostility was constantly evident between the two. This was the
first recorded instance of the gospel being "taken to and received by"
the Samaritans. A tremendous spiritual awakening broke out in Samaria,
and many believed. The Gospel was implanted in their lives, and
churches were founded.

Fourth, Philip is divinely led to travel a desert road from Jerusalem
to Gaza, where he encounters an Ethiopian eunuch, the treasurer for
the Ethiopian ruler Candace. The Jewish law prohibited a eunuch from
entering the temple. God planned to reach this influential man by
sending Philip personally to interpret the Scriptures and reveal to
him the way of eternal life. The eunuch was saved, baptized, and used
mightily by God in spreading the Gospel. Significant? Tremendously so!
The gospel had never been proclaimed in Ethiopia. As the eunuch
returned to his country, many churches were raised up through his
life. The gospel was spread into Africa!

These four significant things changed the course of the whole world!
It all started through the courageous, faithful witness of one who was
"constrained by the love of God." Man will not restrain the hand of
God. Through His own, God will manifest His power and carry out His
plan and purpose. HE IS SOVEREIGN!

The River of Life

The River of Life

There is a river that's flowing,
flowing deep and wide;
It's flowing from Mount Calvary, from the Savior's pierced and bleeding side.

Have you plunged into this river
and been cleansed and made pure,
spotless and white?
Have you given your heart to Jesus,
and with Him made everything right?

If you haven't made this choice,
then I pray you will make it today;
He wants to bring peace and joy to your life,
and take all the guilt and the heartache away.

He's waiting patiently outside your door for you to invite Him to come in;
He has so much to offer to you and a glorious new life in Him will begin!

When you plunge into that river
you will find that your life will
start anew;
No more searching or struggling
for He will always be there for you!

~Helen Johnson~

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal,
proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

My child, come boldly to the throne of grace for My grace is
sufficient for you. You have no reason to concern yourself about the
cares of life, but in everything give thanks for this is God's will
that you do so. It is good that you have come early. It is good that
you stay close that I might commune with you. I Am the dearest and
most faithful friend you shall ever have but My faithful friends are
few and I know your thoughts right now and yes, indeed I have had many
faithful friends but far more are they that know me not, and many have
heard of Me and know that I died for their sins and even believe it in
a mental state but their hearts are far from me, and they are not
willing to accept Me as Savior and Lord, yet even plan to go to heaven
when they die the natural death. Heaven would be miserable company for
those who have not the Spirit of God for no one has ever desired to
fellowship with Me who seeks Me not. Blessed are those that seek Me,
blessed are the redeemed for your sins and iniquities I will remember
no more. My child, it is always My desire to bless My children and
many are the blessings I have in store for them. Even your ability to
sit with pen in hand to hear My words is a blessing that few have ever
attained and there was once a time when you knew nothing of such and
wouldn't have believed it was possible. How far you have come in your
spiritual walk for there was once a time when you had no desire to
hear the words from My heart to yours. The more My people seek the
more they shall find and you have found Me to be pleasant company for
in Me is a love feast that you can find at no other place.
I love you even as you are but it is My desire to make you as well as
all more like I AM for perfection is found in no other but in Me; but
My people have the perfection of Christ Jesus in the Spiritual realm
for in Him is your righteousness.

Today's Promise from the Bible

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down
from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither
shadow of turning.

Reflection

Absolutely every good thing comes from our Father who tends to all our
needs according to His purpose. Amazingly, our gracious Father never
changes, but remains the same through all eternity. May we continue to
give thanks to Him who pours forth His love and peace to all who
believe.

I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.

1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant
about those who fall asleep, or to grieve like the rest of men, who
have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we
believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in
him.

This refers to believers who have died. We can grieve, but not like
unbelievers who have no hope of resurrection. We believe that Jesus
died, rose again, and will resurrect the believing dead along with

The Joy of the Lord

The Christian owes it to the world to be supernaturally joyful. In
this day of universal apprehension when men's hearts are failing them
for fear of those things that are coming upon the earth, we Christians
are strategically placed to display a happiness that is not of this
world and to exhibit a tranquillity that will be a little bit of
heaven here below. All this takes for granted that sin has been dealt
with by sincere repentance and thorough amendment of life. It assumes
that we are walking in the light of truth, for true joy cannot be
artificially induced. The "keep smiling" school of applied psychology
is not even remotely related to the true faith of Christ. The chief
fun of the comedian and the good humor of the wit who is the life of
the party are like flowers growing on old graves, briefly interesting,
but evanescent and always touched with sadness. But the fountain of
Christian joy flows out from the throne of God, pure, refreshing and
sweet everlastingly.

Verse
I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy
may be complete. John 15:11

Thought
It was Tertullian who said that the Christian saint is hilarious. The
closer one comes to God, the more joy is experienced. Joy based not on
circumstances or passing emotion but the joy of the Lord that comes
from knowing Him.

Prayer
O Lord, the reality of being Yours opens my heart to the flow of Your
joy. Thank You!

I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.
Psalm 18:1 (KJV)

There is a beautiful touch of loving thoughtfulness in the account of
Christ's miracle at Capernaum in providing the tribute money. After
the reference to Peter's interview with the tax collector, the
Scriptures add, when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him
(17:25); that is, anticipated him, as the old Saxon word means. Jesus
arranged for the need before Peter had to speak about it at all and
sent him down to the sea to find the piece of gold in the mouth of the
fish.

So the Lord is always thinking in advance of our needs. He loves to
save us from embarrassment. He anticipates and cares by laying up His
loving acts and providing before the emergency comes.

Then with exquisite tenderness the Master adds: That take, and give to
them for me and thee. He puts Himself first in the embarrassing need
and bears the heavy end of the burden for His distressed and suffering
child. He makes our cares His cares, our sorrows His sorrows, our
shame His shame. He is able to be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities (Hebrews 4:15).

Scripture
That take, and give unto them for me and thee—Matthew 17:27

The Difference Between Heaven and Hell

A Holy man was having a conversation with the Lord one day and said,
Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.

The Lord led the holy man to two doors.

He opened one of the doors and the holy man looked in. In the middle
of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a
large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the holy man's
mouth water.

The people sitting around the table were thin and sickly. They
appeared to be famished. They were holding spoons with very long
handles that were strapped to their arms and each found it possible to
reach into the pot of stew and take a spoonful.

But because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get
the spoons back into their mouths.
The holy man shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
The Lord said, You have seen Hell.

They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the
same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large
pot of stew which made the holy man's mouth water. The people were
equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were
well nourished and plump, laughing and talking.

The holy man said, I don't understand.

It is simple, said the Lord. It requires but one skill. You see they
have learned to feed each other, while the greedy think only of
themselves.

"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon
you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give
you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

If you haven't done so, why not ask Jesus to forgive your sins and to
come into your heart to be your Savior and Lord? Just pray the
following prayer: "O God, I am a sinner. I am sorry for my sin and I
am willing to turn from it. I receive Jesus as my Savior; I confess
Him as my Lord. From now on, I want to follow Him in the fellowship
of His Church. In Jesus' name. Amen"

Job 13:15
"Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him."
Total Trust
Years ago a military officer and his wife were aboard a ship that was
caught in a raging storm at sea. Seeing his wife's fear, the man tried
to comfort her. Suddenly she grasped his sleeve and cried, "How can
you be so calm?" He stepped back and drew his sword. Pointing it at
her, he asked, "Are you afraid of this?" "Of course not!" she
answered. "Why not?" he inquired. "Because I know you love me too much
to hurt me," she said. He replied, "I also know the One who holds the
winds and the waters in the hollow of His hand, and He loves us too
much to fail to care for us!"
Job had that same trust. He had lost his children, his wealth and his
health. Even his wife had turned against him. He had only one more
thing to lose--his own life. Yet Job declared that even if it were to
come down to that final loss, he would continue to trust that God had
a purpose in everything that happened to him. In Job's eyes, the
important issue was not what was happening but whose hand was behind
it. If God did it, Job knew he could trust it.
Often our trust is based on the "what" rather than the "who." We focus
on the event rather than the One who controls that event.
Consequently, when trials and tribulations come crashing down upon us,
our faith is shaken. We can't understand why a loving Heavenly Father
would allow such grief to enter our lives. Yet if we truly believe
that He is loving, we can say with Job that even though He slay us, we
will believe He intends it for our good. In His infinite wisdom and
goodness, He will take the most difficult circumstances and use them
for our good.
When you are facing life's most severe trials, focus on the character
of God. Build your trust on who God is, not on what is taking place.
When you know who He is, you never have to worry about what He will
allow to happen.
Trust is based on character, not circumstances.

The Living God

"O Daniel, servant of the living God, is thy God whom thou servest
continually, able to deliver thee" (Dan. 6:20).
How many times we find this expression in the Scriptures, and yet it
is just this very thing that we are so prone to lose sight of. We know
it is written "the living God"; but in our daily life there is
scarcely anything we practically so much lose sight of as the fact
that God is the living God; that He is now whatever He was three or
four thousand years since; that He has the same sovereign power, the
same saving love towards those who love and serve Him as ever He had
and that He will do for them now what He did for others two, three,
four thousand years ago, simply because He is the living God, the
unchanging One. Oh, how therefore we should confide in Him, and in our
darkest moments never lose sight of the fact that He is still and ever
will be the living God!
Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him and expect help from
Him, He will never fail you. An older brother who has known the Lord
for forty-four years, who writes this, says to you for your
encouragement that He has never failed him. In the greatest
difficulties, in the heaviest trials, in the deepest poverty and
necessities, He has never failed me; but because I was enabled by His
grace to trust Him He has always appeared for my help. I delight in
speaking well of His name. --George Mueller
Luther was once found at a moment of peril and fear, when he had need
to grasp unseen strength, sitting in an abstracted mood tracing on the
table with his finger the words, "Vivit! vivit!" ("He lives! He
lives!"). It is our hope for ourselves, and for His truth, and for
mankind. Men come and go; leaders, teachers, thinkers speak and work
for a season, and then fall silent and impotent. He abides. They die,
but He lives. They are lights kindled, and, therefore, sooner or later
quenched; but He is the true light from which they draw all their
brightness, and He shines for evermore. --Alexander Maclaren
"One day I came to know Dr. John Douglas Adam," writes C. G. Trumbull.
"I learned from him that what he counted his greatest spiritual asset
was his unvarying consciousness of the actual presence of Jesus.
Nothing bore him up so, he said, as the realization that Jesus was
always with him in actual presence; and that this was so independent
of his own feelings, independent of his deserts, and independent of
his own notions as to how Jesus would manifest His presence.
"Moreover, he said that Christ was the home of his thoughts. Whenever
his mind was free from other matters it would turn to Christ; and he
would talk aloud to Christ when he was alone--on the street,
anywhere--as easily and naturally as to a human friend. So real to him
was Jesus' actual presence.
