God Is Our Loving Father

Luke 15:11-24

Humanity tends to project its own faulty habits onto God. This is
especially true regarding the nature of His love. We think we must
barter, plead, or try hard to earn the Lord's favor. But as the
prodigal son learned, the Father's love is unconditional.

The wayward son expected his father's love to be diminished.
Therefore, he went home hoping for a place among the family servants.
Imagine the boy's delight when Dad greeted him with a hug and a
celebration. His actions certainly didn't merit an outpouring of
affection, but Jesus' parable is all about a Father who doesn't give
people what they deserve.

A love based on conduct would keep people guessing, Have I done
enough? Instead, God cares for you simply because you're you, and He
expects nothing in return. Consider the prodigal's life after his
homecoming party. He didn't move into the servants' quarters and get
to work. He was reinstated to his place as the second son of a wealthy
man, with all of the privilege that entails. In the same way,
believers are the Lord's cherished children (2 Cor. 6:18). When God
looks at His loved ones, He doesn't focus upon past failures, faults,
or sin. He sees the heirs to His kingdom—men and women who love Him
and desire to spend eternity in His presence.

No matter how far we may wander from the Lord's perfect will for our
lives, we are always welcome back. The Bible teaches that God's love
cannot be lost, regardless of sin or poor decisions (though we may
have to live with the consequences). Our Father's arms are always
open.

OUR DYNAMIC POWER SOURCE

Ephesians 1:19
. . . the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. These
are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might . . .

In Ephesians 1:19-21, Paul gives us a peek at the dynamic source of our
authority in Christ. He explains that the authority at our disposal flows
from the reservoir of power which raised Jesus Christ from the dead and
seated Him at the Father's right hand. That power source is so dynamic that
Paul used four different Greek words in verse 19 to describe it: power
(dunameos), working (energeian), strength (kratous), and might (ischuos) .
Behind the resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ lies the mightiest work of
power recorded in the Word of God. And the same power which raised Christ
from the dead and defeated Satan is the power available to us to overcome
the works of Satan in our daily lives.

Paul opens our eyes to the expansive scope of Christ's authority which is
"far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name
that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come"
(Ephesians 1:21). Think about the most powerful and influential political
or military leaders in the world. Imagine the most feared terrorists, crime
kingpins and drug barons. Think about Satan and all the power of darkness
marshaled under his command. Jesus' authority is not only above all these
human and spiritual authorities past, present and future, but He is far
above them. We share the same position because we are seated with Christ in
the heavenlies, which enable us to live in freedom and victory over demonic
intrusion and influence.

Don't be deceived. You are not under Satan's power or subject to his
authority. You are in Christ above all demonic rule, authority and power.

Prayer: Reigning with You, Lord--what a liberating thought! I praise You
today for the power You share with me.

Read Genesis 25 – 27
Highlights:
Abraham's death; birth of Jacob and Esau; Esau sells his birthright; Isaac
blesses Jacob with the Abrahamic Covenant.
Esau and Jacob were twin brothers, but Esau was born first and had legal
rights to the family birthright which included, among other things, being
heir to the Covenant between God and Abraham. This birthright was a link in
the line of descendants through which the Promised Messiah was to come
(Num. 24:17-19). In contrast with Esau, Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in
tents (Gen. 25:27). The Hebrew word for plain is the same word translated
in other Scripture as perfect, upright, undefiled. So the word plain refers
to Jacob's character as a man of God. God records His highest praise and
blessing for Jacob: The LORD hath chosen Jacob unto Himself (Ps. 135:4).
Esau came from the field, and he was faint: And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me
. . . with that same red pottage (stew); for I am faint (Gen. 25:29-30).
Knowing the character of his brother, Jacob replied: Sell me this day thy
birthright (25:31). Esau had no interest in spiritual things so he agreed,
saying: I am at the point (about) to die: and what profit shall this
birthright do to me (25:32-34)? Esau could not have been at the point to
die by missing one meal, but he revealed what little regard he had for the
birthright.
Though much slandered by Esau, the fact is, Jacob purchased the birthright
for what Esau thought it was worth. More importantly, God had earlier told
Rebekah that the elder shall serve the younger (25:23). So God had chosen
Jacob to receive the birthright even before he was born.
It appears that Isaac's admiration for his worldly-minded son Esau caused
him to ignore the prophecy that God had revealed to Rebekah before the
twins' birth, and he chose to disregard Esau's sale of his birthright to
Jacob (25:33-34).
But the moment Isaac realized that Rebekah had thwarted his evil scheme, he
quickly and openly conferred the Abrahamic Covenant upon Jacob, which was
an obvious admission of how terribly wrong he had been (28:1-4). There is
no hint that Isaac thought that Rebekah did wrong. The Hebrew word Jacob is
often translated "supplanter." One of the definitions of supplant in
Webster's Dictionary is "to take the place of and serve as a substitute
for, especially by reason of superior excellence."
To accuse Jacob of wrongdoing is to misinterpret the Word of God. The
writer of Hebrews referred to Esau as a profane (godless) person (Heb.
12:16). Before their births, God knew that Esau's descendants would become
enemies of Israel for generations to come, and He knew Jacob was a man of
integrity. He had preordained that Jacob would be in the lineage of Jesus.
Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of
bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; Lest
there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of
meat (food) sold his birthright (Heb. 12:15-16).
Thought for Today:
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a
peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of Him who hath
called you out of darkness into His marvellous light (I Pet. 2:9).
Christ Revealed:
As the spiritual Seed that would bless all the nations of the earth (Gen.
26:4). Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. . . . as of one
. . . which is Christ (Gal. 3:16).
Word Studies:
26:8 sporting with, caressing, expressing love; 26:14 great store, a great
number; 26:21 Sitnah, enmity, anger; 26:31 betimes, early; 27:36 supplanted
me, taken my place; 27:42 as touching thee, concerning you.

Genesis 12

God establishes a unilateral covenant with Abraham.
INSIGHT
The opposite of obedience is unbelief; the essence of obedience is belief.
If you truly believe God is totally good and all powerful, if you truly
believe He always acts for His children's benefit, you will obey whatever
He asks of you. It is when you doubt these truths that obedience to the
Lord becomes difficult.
The New Testament tells us: "Abraham believed God" (James 2:23). Therefore,
he obeyed when God said, "Get out of your country" (Genesis 12:1).
Are you struggling with obedience in an area of your life? Perhaps there is
something in the Scriptures you do not truly believe. Search your life, and
in the tradition of the disciples, ask the Lord to increase your faith
(Luke 17:5).
PRAYER
· In faith and obedience, offer to the Lord the praise of your lips:

Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel,
Who only does wondrous things!
And blessed be His glorious name forever!
And let the whole earth be filled with His
glory (Psalm 72:18-19).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free from sin and
in fellowship with Him:

All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity
of us all (Isaiah 53:6).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new
(2 Corinthians 5:17).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· greater love for the lost,
· the work of missions in Africa,
· the concerns of your heart.

· Offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

Great is our Lord, and mighty in power;
His understanding is infinite.
The Lord lifts up the humble;
He casts the wicked down to the ground
(Psalm 147:5-6).

The Lord will command His lovingkindness
in the daytime,
And in the night His song shall be with me
(Psalm 42:8).

*Today God Is First
*

"He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They
were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven."
(Ps 107:29-30).
Imagine for a moment you began an exciting sailing adventure. You've been
trained to navigate and sail on the ocean and be ready should trouble
arise. You are confident you can handle the challenge. However, midway in
the journey your resources have dried up. It almost seems God has
intentionally destroyed all the skills you have to deal with the weather
and the obstacles and your sails are now damaged. Even your engine has
broken down. And to make matters even worse, your oars were lost overboard.
You are stuck in the middle of the ocean and there is no wind to propel
your boat. You are, as they say, "up the creek without a paddle."
All of this leads you to the end of yourself and you say, "Lord, I don't
know why you brought me out here only to die." The silence is deafening.
Finally, the Lord speaks, "Yes, you are right. I did bring you out here. I
did destroy your sails. I did break your engine. And yes, I do want you
dead. Not in a physical sense, mind you, but in a spiritual sense. In order
that you may LIVE."
"You see my child, you are nothing without Me. You cannot do anything
without my grace and power in your life." The sailor quietly yields.
Suddenly, a gentle wave lifts the front of the boat. An easterly wind blows
through the broken sail moving the boat in the right direction. You realize
God is moving your boat! Your role now is to steer it.
Do your sails no longer have wind to move you? Is your engine broken? Does
it feel like God has propelled you into the open sea only to stop midway
with no options? Perhaps He is saying it is time to die in order that He
might live through you. Give the Lord total control today and you will see
His wind moving through your tattered sails.

Where Are You Going?
Sharon Jaynes
Today's Truth
For God so loved the world, that Hegave His only begotten Son, that whoever
believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life, (John3:16, NASB).
Friend to Friend
I was traveling to Canada to speak at a women's conference. As I approached
the passport checker, I held out my little book like a seasoned traveler.
"Are you here for business or pleasure," the guard asked?
"Well, I'm not sure what to call it. I'm here for ministry. I'm speaking
at a women's event and it is my pleasure to be here."
"Where are you going?"
"I'm not sure where the event is, "I answered. "They have someone picking
me up."
"Where are you staying?" she continued.
"You know, I have no idea," I answered with a smile.
"Excuse me, ma'am. Will you please set aside and follow me?"
"Of course."
I followed what looked like a police officer as she led me to a little
room. All of a sudden, a twinge of fear rose up in my throat, and I
realized I might not have answered her questions with the best answers. I
was entering a foreign country and I couldn't tell them where I was going
or where I was staying. I sat in the plastic chair and noticed a security
camera in the corner.
In quick order, another man came in the room with an official looking note
pad. He asked me a battery of questions. I quickly learned that when those
border patrol people ask you where you are going and where you are staying,
you'd better have a ready answer. You do not want to be ushered into the
little white room with the camera recording your every move.
Thankfully, they let me in the country, and I spoke at the women's
retreat. But I can assure you, every other time I've crossed the border,
whether north, south, east or west, I've had a ready answer to the
questions that I know will be coming my way.
That brings me to a couple of questions we're all going to have to answer
one day. Do you know where you are going? Do you know where you are
staying? Not tomorrow or the next day, but for eternity? If you were to die
today, do you know where you're headed? If you're not sure, Click hereto
find out more about how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ
and the assurance of heaven as your final destination.

Let's Pray
Dear Jesus, thank You for giving Your life for me so that I can have
eternal life in heaven. I know that I could never earn my salvation…that I
could never be good enough. But You were good enough for me. Because of
Your finished work on the cross, God has made a way for everyone to believe
on You, confess your Name, and be saved.
In Your Name,
Amen.

~Lord Of All~

Have you given the Lord reign
over every part of your heart?
Have you let His mercy and grace
give your life a brand new start?

The Savior desires to be Lord of all
and have control of our lives,
If we let Him have His rightful place,
we can live in peace, without sin or strife.

Many people call Him Savior
but won't let Him be Lord of all.
He has not only saved us
but will be there, when on His name we call.

Let Jesus be your Master
leaning always unto Him
You'll find His grace is all sufficient,
He'll be your dearest friend.

When you don't know what to do

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from
you. --James 4:7
Shortly after the Civil War, General William T. Sherman's army was
scheduled to march in a victory parade in [City Name, State].
The night before the parade, Sherman called General Oliver Howard to his
room and said, "General, you were at the head of one of the divisions that
marched with me through Georgia, and you should rightfully ride at the head
of your division in the parade tomorrow. However, I've been asked to let
the general who preceded you in command represent the division."
General Howard replied, "With all due respect, sir, I think I am entitled
to represent my division, since I led them to victory."
Sherman said, "Yes, you are. But I know you're a Christian, and I was
wondering if you would yield your rights for the sake of peace."
Quickly, Howard responded, "Of course I'll yield."
"All right," General Sherman said, "I will arrange so, and I want you to
report to me in the morning at 9:00 a.m. You will be riding with me at the
head of the parade."
General Howard's willingness to yield his position to his commander led to
an even greater position of honor. Just the same, God blesses those who are
completely submitted to Him. Psalm 51:17 says, "The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise."

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Pray that God would give you a submissive spirit, so that
you can fully be used by Him.

*Notice what Jesus said to the woman caught in the act of
adultery.*

*JOHN 8:11 NKJ
11 She said, "No one, Lord." And Jesus said to her, "Neither do
I condemn you; go and sin no more."*

*Jesus does not condemn you for your sin. He understands. He
came to earth and lived in a human body just as you do.*

*Jesus knows the pressure you face. He knows the pain. And Jesus
cares. He cares enough to help you be free of the sin; because
He knows that sin will destroy you.*

*Sin may give a temporary pleasure, but in the end sin always
destroys. Jesus loves you so much, and does not want you to be
destroyed.*

*So Jesus is against sin because He loves you.*

*SAY THIS: Jesus is my friend.

*Daily Devotional
*Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based on the book of
Proverbs in the Bible. * * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:*

*Proverbs 21:15-16 (KJV):
**15 It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the
workers of iniquity.
16 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in
the congregation of the dead.**
**
**Proverbs 21:15-16 (AMP):
**15 When justice is done it is a joy to the righteous (the upright, in
right standing with God); but to the evildoers it is dismay, calamity and
ruin.
16 The man who wanders out of the way of understanding shall abide in the
congregation of the spirits -- of the dead.*

*Thoughts for the Day:*

These scriptures tell us of the fate and judgment of both those who pursue
unrighteousness and those who are just and righteous. Most of the time
when the word "judgment" is mentioned, it brings to mind destruction and
doom. However, there is a positive side to judgment.

*Verse 15* speaks of a joy for some who are judged, along with dismay for
others. Although judgment usually has an evil connotation to it (the
execution of the penalty for sin), it also has a positive side. Judgment
has to do with the sowing and reaping process. This is defined in the New
Testament.* *

*Galatians 6:7-9:
**7 **Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that
shall he also reap.
8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but
he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap,
if we faint not."*

From this, we can see that the negative side of judgment is destruction for
works of wickedness, while on the positive side, good that is sown through
Jesus is rewarded. God's judgment on evil is seen by the curse that is on
wicked men, while God's judgment for the righteous will manifest in His
blessings and rewards on them. This is true for individuals as well as
nations.

As a nation (the USA), we have sown both good and evil. I believe God has
been gracious and merciful to us because we have reached out to help the
other nations of the world. The church has sent many missionaries around
the world. Christians in this nation have supported many missionary works,
while Christians and others have supported humanitarian works in every
nation. The United States government has poured billions of dollars into
foreign aid and forgiven billions of dollars of indebtedness to other
countries. We are one of the first on the scene to arrive with aid and
assistance when natural disasters, such as earthquakes, strike other
countries. America has helped the oppressed and poor of other nations. She
has helped rebuild infrastructures, railways, etc. after nations have been
ravaged by war. I could name many more, but this should suffice.

As a nation, we have also sown much evil. We have exported our ungodly
music, movies, pornography, tobacco, alcohol. Our tobacco companies cannot
sell their wares to the young people in our nation, but they are allowed to
export it to the youth of other nations. We have been hypocritical in
calling ourselves a Christian nation when we allow abortion and other
evils. Many Americans are drug addicts, and are consumed with pornography
and vile movies. We commit adultery without blushing and are sex-crazed. I
have noticed that the most prevalent types of ads that daily come across
the Internet are ads selling something pertaining to sex; ads that tell you
how to become a millionaire; and those that encourage gambling. Instead of
being a good example to the world, we export our vices. Sharing Christ
with other nations is difficult when they see our lust and materialism. Our
American culture has been shot through with all types of sinful temptations
designed by the devil to keep us weak and fearful and powerless to fight
against him. Yes, judgment comes upon us as we reap what we have sown. God
wants to bless us with good things, but our sins prevent God from blessing
us.

*Jeremiah
5:25:
Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have
withholden good things from you.*

In *Verse 16 *of our study today, we find that death and destruction is
awaiting those who fail to understand the Word of God. We are all being
judged by the Word of God daily. When we fail to keep God's laws and
Christ's commandments, we are judged in that respect. When we honor God
and keep His Word, we are also judged as faithful. There is one way we can
avert judgment. When we repent of our sins and walk in a daily
relationship with Jesus, we no longer come under judgment. Jesus took our
judgment on the cross to save us from hell, which is the penalty for our
sins. We must pray that the church comes to true repentance that will
produce a genuine revival in our nation and the world. Here are the Words
of Jesus:

*John 12:47-48:
**47 **And if any man hear my words, and believe not, I judge him not: for
I came not to judge the world, but to save the world.
48 He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth
him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day.*

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Father in Heaven, I thank You for Your great mercy to all of us
individually, and in our nation. Father, move on the hearts of Your people
to repent and turn back to You, so that we can avert any more judgments on
our land. Forgive us for our apathy and sin. Lord, help us to study Your
Word, pray Your Word, speak Your Word and walk in Your Word. Use us, Your
children, to bring light into this dark world by showing others the way to
Christ. I ask this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.*

Divine Direction

And so it was, when the cloud abode from even unto the morning, and
that the cloud was taken up in the morning, then they journeyed:
whether it was by day or by night that the cloud was taken up, they
journeyed.
Each of us who is active and aggressive in our service for the Lord
finds one aspect of the Christian life more difficult than any other.
We find it almost impossible just to sit and not to move when God is
not moving us. The best antidote for anxiety is to trust in God and
wait patiently on Him.
The movement of the nation of Israel through the wilderness
graphically illustrates the need for God's people to wait on Him.
Numbers 9 gives God's program for Israel's progression. The Jews were
not on a steady march for forty years in the wilderness, neither were
they at permanent rest. In fact, their journey was a long series of
stops and goes. Both were at the command of God.
God never leaves His people alone, without a witness or guide. Living
by faith sometimes means walking in the dark, it never means living
without a light. God would provide the natural phenomena of a cloud
and fire. On the day that it was erected, a cloud covered the
Tabernacle so that it was entirely enshrouded during the day. At night
fire appeared in the sky and prohibited Israel from losing sight of
the abode of God. Numbers 9:21 summarizes, "And so it was, when the
cloud bode from even unto the morning, and that the cloud was taken in
the morning then they journeyed: whether it was by day or night that
the cloud was taken up, they journeyed." Since the length of the stay
at any one place in the wilderness could vary from two days, to a
month, to a year, Israel's only obligation was to trust God and watch
for the movement of the cloud.
Many are the occasions that we find ourselves awaiting direction from
the Lord and wondering if it will ever come. But if we let Him be our
guide, we will not only "Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him"
(Psalm 37:7), but when He does move us we will be certain that our
direction is the correct one.
Some years ago a party of fisherman took their small boat into the
Gulf of Mexico. They came to their favorite spot, a place they had
been many times before. The weather was balmy, the fish were biting,
and they completely lost themselves in the hours of the afternoon. By
nightfall a dense fog had moved in and they found themselves
completely engulfed in the "soup" and could see only a few feet ahead
of them. Their hearts raced with excitement. Then one of the fishermen
remembered that he had a small compass in his pocket. They had already
determined which direction they should go, but the compass pointed in
the opposite direction. Now they were faced with a dilemma. Would they
follow their own instincts, or the sure rule of the compass? All the
men agreed to follow the direction of the compass. After what seemed
an endlessly long time, they saw the shadowy outline of the shore
emerging through the fog. They found themselves only a few yards from
the
dock where they started earlier in the day. The reliable compass had
told them which direction to go, they trusted it, and they returned
home safely.
Let us not be guilty today of attempting to move ahead of God when He
says to "sit still." Likewise, when through the Word of God we are
moved in a particular direction, let us not question that direction,
but do the will of God. The clouds of concern may completely encircle
us today but God will remove them in His own good time and will
provide direction for us if we simply trust Him and wait upon Him.
MORNING HYMN
Lord, I would clasp Thy hand in mine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine,
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since 'tis my God that leadeth me!
