A Basic Precondition
For reading & meditation: John 20:1-18
"They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise
from the dead.)" (v. 9)
The late Bishop John Robinson stated: "The resurrection of the body of
Christ is no essential belief for Christian people, and it would make
no difference to their faith if the Lord's body had been flung into
the Valley of Hinnom, like those of the malefactors, to disintegrate
among the rotting corpses." Such a statement flies in the very face of
Scripture. Paul wrote: "If you confess with your mouth, 'Jesus is
Lord,' and believe ... that God raised him from the dead, you will be
saved" (Rom. 10:9, italics added). Here Paul makes it crystal clear
that acceptance of the fact that Christ rose from the dead is a basic
precondition for being a Christian. But what exactly do we mean by
resurrection? "Spiritual survival" is how the liberals in the church
define it. But it was not just the spiritual part of Jesus that
continued after the tomb - it was the total Christ. True, His body
possessed additional powers and properties, but the physical frame
which
housed His spirit after He left the tomb was the same one that was
nailed to the cross. "See my hands," He said to doubting Thomas, "put
[your hand] into my side ... and believe" (John 20:27). Eric Sauer, a
writer and Bible teacher, makes the point: "Just as our Lord's body
was capable of transfiguration without losing its identity, so it was
capable of disfiguration without losing its identity." Make no mistake
about it, our Lord's resurrection was a physical one. If it wasn't,
then there is no salvation.
Prayer:
Father, if I am not sure of the resurrection how can I be sure I am
saved? However, I am sure, for I live in a resurrected Christ. Since
He was resurrected, I know I shall be too. Death has been conquered.
Hallelujah!

Morning

They that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD,
hast not forsaken them that seek thee.

The name of the LORD [is] a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it,
and is safe.--I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD [is] my
strength and [my] song; he also is become my salvation.

I have been young, and [now] am old; yet I have not seen the righteous
forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.--For the LORD loveth judgment, and
forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the
wicked shall be cut off. --The LORD will not forsake his people for his
great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his
people.-- Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom
we trust that he will yet deliver [us].

[Be] content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord [is] my
helper, and I will not fear what man shall do to me.

Evening

They are without fault before the throne of God.

The iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and [there shall be] none; and
the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom
I reserve.--Who [is] a God like thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth
by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his
anger for ever, because he delighteth [in] mercy. He will turn again, he
will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt
cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.

He hath made us accepted in the beloved.--To present you holy and
unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present [you]
faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, to God the
only wise, our Saviour, [be] glory and majesty, dominion and power, both
now and ever. Amen.

Morning

"The iniquity of the holy things."-Exodus 28:38

What a veil is lifted up by these words, and what a disclosure is made! It
will be humbling and profitable for us to pause awhile and see this sad
sight. The iniquities of our public worship, its hypocrisy, formality,
lukewarmness, irreverence, wandering of heart and forgetfulness of God,
what a full measure have we there! Our work for the Lord, its emulation,
selfishness, carelessness, slackness, unbelief, what a mass of defilement
is there! Our private devotions, their laxity, coldness, neglect,
sleepiness, and vanity, what a mountain of dead earth is there! If we
looked more carefully we should find this iniquity to be far greater than
appears at first sight. Dr. Payson, writing to his brother, says, "My
parish, as well as my heart, very much resembles the garden of the
sluggard; and what is worse, I find that very many of my desires for the
melioration of both, proceed either from pride or vanity or indolence. I
look at the weeds which overspread my garden, and breathe !
out an earnest wish that they were eradicated. But why? What prompts the
wish? It may be that I may walk out and say to myself, 'In what fine order
is my garden kept!' This is pride. Or, it may be that my neighbours may
look over the wall and say, 'How finely your garden flourishes!' This is
vanity. Or I may wish for the destruction of the weeds, because I am weary
of pulling them up. This is indolence." So that even our desires after
holiness may be polluted by ill motives. Under the greenest sods worms hide
themselves; we need not look long to discover them. How cheering is the
thought, that when the High Priest bore the iniquity of the holy things he
wore upon his brow the words, "HOLINESS TO THE LORD:" and even so while
Jesus bears our sin, He presents before His Father's face not our
unholiness, but his own holiness. O for grace to view our great High Priest
by the eye of faith!

"Thy love is better than wine."-Song of Solomon 1:2
Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship with Christ. He has
enjoyment as others have in the common mercies of life, he can be glad both
in God's gifts and God's works; but in all these separately, yea, and in
all of them added together, he doth not find such substantial delight as in
the matchless person of his Lord Jesus. He has wine which no vineyard on
earth ever yielded; he has bread which all the corn-fields of Egypt could
never bring forth. Where can such sweetness be found as we have tasted in
communion with our Beloved? In our esteem, the joys of earth are little
better than husks for swine compared with Jesus, the heavenly manna. We
would rather have one mouthful of Christ's love, and a sip of his
fellowship, than a whole world full of carnal delights. What is the chaff
to the wheat? What is the sparkling paste to the true diamond? What is a
dream to the glorious reality? What is time's mirth, in its best trim,
compared to our Lord Jesus in His most d!
espised estate? If you know anything of the inner life, you will confess
that our highest, purest, and most enduring joys must be the fruit of the
tree of life which is in the midst of the Paradise of God. No spring yields
such sweet water as that well of God which was digged with the soldier's
spear. All earthly bliss is of the earth earthy, but the comforts of
Christ's presence are like Himself, heavenly. We can review our communion
with Jesus, and find no regrets of emptiness therein; there are no dregs in
this wine, no dead flies in this ointment. The joy of the Lord is solid and
enduring. Vanity hath not looked upon it, but discretion and prudence
testify that it abideth the test of years, and is in time and in eternity
worthy to be called "the only true delight." For nourishment, consolation,
exhilaration, and refreshment, no wine can rival the love of Jesus. Let us
drink to the full this evening.

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

January 8
Purity of Heart and Life

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. (Matthew 5:8)
Purity, even purity of heart, is the main thing to be aimed at. We
need to be made clean within through the Spirit and the Word, and then
we shall be clean without by consecration and obedience. There is a
close connection between the affections and the understanding: if we
love evil we cannot understand that which is good. If the heart is
foul, the eye will be dim. How can those men see a holy God who love
unholy things?
What a privilege it is to see God here! A glimpse of Him is heaven
below! In Christ Jesus the pure in heart behold the Father. We see
Him, His truth, His love, His purpose, His sovereignty, His covenant
character, yea, we see Himself in Christ. But this is only apprehended
as sin is kept out of the heart. Only those who aim at godliness can
cry, "Mine eyes are ever towards the Lord." The desire of Moses, "I
beseech thee, show me thy glory," can only be fulfilled in us as we
purify ourselves from all iniquity. We shall "see him as he is," and
"every one that hath this hope in him purifieth himself." The
enjoyment of present fellowship and the hope of the beatific vision
are urgent motives for purity of heart and life. Lord, make us pure in
heart that we may see Thee!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

January 8
Psalm 3:6
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set
themselves against me round abou t.
All of the customers had been so hateful and belligerent. Nancy
thought that if one more unpleasant person assaulted her, she would
scream. To make matters worse, the store owners were being
unreasonable and hard to get along with. She didn't know how much more
she could take. She rested here chin on her chest and heaved a heavy
sight. Then, the cross she wore around her neck caught her eye, and
she felt strangely calm. The frustrations of the day melted away as
the peace of Christ settled upon her heart.

In the daily battles we find ourselves engaged in, it is vital that we
remember we have an ally who is greater than anyone who might oppose
us or wish to make us unhappy. Jesus Christ became victor over
everything this world could throw at Him; even death itself. It we
will give Him control of our hearts, He will be true to us and grant
us victory in the struggles we face.

Prayer: Father, You have made me a conqueror through Your Son, Jesus
Christ. Help me to live as a victor and not as one defeated. Lift me
up to be a sign to the world that in Christ we need never be afraid.
Amen.

Living as Light in the World

Whether or not the Christian should separate himself from the world is
not open to debate. The question has been settled for him by the
Sacred Scriptures, an authority from which there can be no appeal. The
New Testament is very plain: "They are not of the world," said our
Lord, "even as I am not of the world." James wrote, "Ye adulterers and
adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity
with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the
enemy of God." John said, "Love not the world, neither the things that
are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is
not in him." Such teaching as this would appear to be plain enough,
and there should be no doubt about what is intended. But we must never
underestimate the ability of the human mind to get itself lost on a
paved highway in broad daylight. Some well-intentioned souls have
managed to get themselves confused about their relation to the world
and have sought to escape it by hiding from it. They read into the
biblical command to separate from the world the idea of complete
withdrawal from all human activities and seek peace of heart by
cutting themselves off, as far as possible, from the great stream of
human life and thought. And that is not good.

Verse
You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they
put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In
the same way, let your light shine before men, th Matthew 5:14-16

Thought
If God had wanted us completely out of the world He could have taken
us home to heaven at the time of our spiritual birth. No, we are to be
in the world but not of it. We are to shine as light in world-system
darkness.

Prayer
Forgive me, Lord, for unhealthy accommodation to the world in which I
live. May I not forget that I am a stranger here with citizenship in
heaven--but a stranger ablaze with the light of Christ.

The Change
Steven Curtis Chapman
from the album Speechless

Well I got myself a T-shirt that says what I believe
I got letters on my bracelet to seve as my ID
I got the necklace and the key chain
And almost everything a good Christian needs, yeah
I got the little Bible magnets on my refrigerator door
And a welcome mat to bless you before you walk across my floor
I got a Jesus bumper sticker
And the outline of a fish stuck on my car
And even thought this stuff's all well and good, yeah
I cannot help but ask myself

What about the change
What about the difference
What about the grace
What about forgiveness
What about a life that's showing
I'm undergoing the change

Well I've got this way of thinking that comes so naturally
Where I believer the whole world is revolving around me
And I got this way of living that I have to die to every single day
'Cause if God's Spirit lives inside of me, yeah
I'm gonna live life differently

I'm gonna have the change
I'm gonna have the difference
I'm gonna have the grace
I'm gonna have forgiveness
I'm gonna live a life that's showing
I'm undergoing the change

What about the change
What about the difference
What about the grace
What about forgiveness
I want to live a life that's showing
I'm undergoing the change

My children you still have little understanding of My love for you and
try to cause Me to love you more by your actions and somewhat afraid
of losing My love. This happens when your faith is weak and satan
comes against your faith by deceiving and accusing you. This is not
the way I would have you think. I would have you to accept My love
for you and be grateful that I have chosen to love you with an
unlimited love. There are times when you feel yourself much closer to
Me than others but My love for you is always an ongoing thing that you
have no power to change for you are dear to the heart of God and He
created you for a purpose and that to love and have fellowship with
Him for even while you were in a sinful state Jesus loved you enough
to die for you. You may feel your life is purposeless sometimes and
cast yourself down by the deception of evil forces around you.
The world is void of love, and the hearts of mankind seem to lack in
love and it is only the love of God flowing through His people that
love abounds on the earth. The greater the number of the children of
God so much more will love abound in a nation even though God is
always near and always loving those that know Him not. Your loving
heavenly Father never tires of expressing His love to you but He must
have a listening ear of the soul in order to do so even though His
love is forever expressed in His Holy Word of which should always be
your daily portion. Oh! that all My people would come expecting and
believing in the love of God that their souls mount up as eagles
soaring above the needy proclaiming the love of God to the godless and
lost societies of the world. The majority of My people have let satan
silence their voices in proclaiming God's love and saving grace for
humanity. satan would have no one be saved and come to repentance for
he has never loved anyone but God loves all people of all races and He
would have all men come to repentance and salvation for all were lost
and born without a savior, but God sent His only begotten Son to save
all that will come to Him for in Him alone are you complete and set
free from the curse that your sinful nature put upon you. Your Father
God is pouring His love out upon you abundantly even at this moment
and He will continue to do so for His love for you is an everlasting
love. Keep in mind that I love that one that you have judged too
sinful or unworthy of My love, for all were unworthy but I have

A Right Resolution

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are
wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. --II
Corinthians 4:16

My first week of New Year's resolutions is behind me.
Truth is I am not big on making them (it's probably because I never
keep them). Give up desserts for a year? I blow that the first sight
of a chocolate éclair. A few years ago I made a resolution to answer
all my mail within a week of receiving it - I'm still catching up on
November's letters. The list goes on: do not bite nails... give up
sugar... quit being a slave to email... smaller portions on your
plate... turn off the TV... organize your ATM receipts.

There is, however, one resolution worth considering.
Second Corinthians 4:16 states that the inner man - your inner being,
the new creation - must be renewed day by day. It's a necessity. The
inner man has to be daily nourished, whether it's January 7th, 8th,
9th, February, March, summer or fall. Too often we feed our inner
being only on Sunday mornings, or when we hear a good sermon, or
during a monthly Christian luncheon or a seasonal Bible retreat. Many
of us allow the year to wear us down because we ignore this simple
fact - our fellowship with God must be renewed day by day. Our inner
being metabolizes quickly and just one day of neglect will bring on
spiritual malnutrition.

I pray "that he would grant you, according to the riches
of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner
man" (Ephesians 3:16 KJV). Covenant with God today to invite his
Spirit to replenish you as you spend time in his Word and in prayer.
It's a must. It's one resolution you can't afford not to keep. It'll
make this year happy.

Lord Jesus, show me fresh insights every day in your
Word... reveal your heart to me in prayer... and in so doing, renew my
inner man, day by day.

Blessings,

Psalm 4:2-3

O ye sons of men, how long [will ye turn] my glory into shame? [how

Overflowing Love

1 Thessalonians 3:12 May the Lord make your love increase and
overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for
you.

Overflowing love is the example that Paul sets for the Thessalonians,
and the prayer that he has for them. It should be our goal and prayer
also. And it should be the example we set for others.

A little child with a tale of woe on his heart flies to his mother's
arms for comfort-intending to tell her the whole story of his trouble.
But as soon as that mother takes the child in her arms and expresses
her love, the child becomes so occupied with her and the sweetness of
her affection that he forgets to tell his story, and in a little while
even the memory of the trouble is forgotten. It has just been loved
away and the mother has taken its place in the heart of her child.

In this same manner, God comforts us. It is I, be not afraid is His
reassuring word. The circumstances are not altered, but He Himself
comes in their place and satisfies our every need, and we forget all
things in His gracious presence as He becomes our all in all.

I am breathing out my sorrow

On Thy kind and loving breast;

Breathing in Thy joy and comfort,

Breathing in Thy peace and rest.

I am breathing out my longings

In Thy listening, loving ear;

I am breathing in Thy answer,

Stilling every doubt and fear.

Scripture
It is I, be not afraid—Mark 6:50

God Meant it for Good
"God meant it for good." Genesis 50:20

Joseph came from what we might call a very dysfunctional family. Yet
he rose above that family background to become a great man of God. His
mother and Aunt Leah, were both married to his father and fought
constantly over who had a higher standing. They battled over who would
give Jacob more children, even getting their handmaidens in the act.
When you think about it, all this rivalry must have affected the
children. It is easy to see how Joseph became so hated by his
brothers. The striking thing about this story is that Joseph overcame
the hatred and rose above all the horrible things that happened to
him. He did not let bitterness and self-pity destroy him when he was
sold as a slave, but became the best slave he could be, rising to the
very top in his household. When he was betrayed by his master's wife
and sent to prison wrongfully, he again rose above his circumstances
which eventually led him to be second in command of Egypt. He looked
to God and
he believed that no matter what happened in his life, God meant it
for good. That is the kind of trust we should have in our Father. So
the next time life gets you down, you are treated unfairly, or the sky
starts to look very dark, remember Joseph and trust God . . .He means
it for good . . .and see what marvelous things will happen!
Father, help us to live like Joseph. Let us rise above our
circumstances and trust You, knowing that You will work out all of
life's afflictions for our good. Help us to see what You are doing in
our lives, what You are making of us through the struggles and the
trials. Help us to rise to the top as Joseph did because we trust You
as he did. Amen

O blessed peace of a perfect trust,
My loving God, in Thee
Unwavering faith that never doubts
Thou choosest best for me.

O blessed peace of a perfect trust
That looks away from all;
That sees Thy hand in everything,
In great events or small;

That hears Thy voice – a Father's voice –
Directing for the best:
O blessed peace of a perfect trust,
A heart with Thee at rest!

He Was God-man"In Christ there is all of God in a human body."
Colossians 2:9 TLB

Jesus was not a godlike man, nor a manlike God. He was God-man . . .
The maker of the world with a bellybutton . . .

What do we do with such a person? We applaud men for doing good
things? We enshrine God for doing great things. But when a man does
God things?

One thing is certain, we can't ignore him. Why would we want to?

Devotional For Dieters 1/8

January 8

John 6:58
This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers
did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live
for ever.

Face it: Dieting wouldn't be so hard if food didn't taste so good!
Like anything good, we want to get as much of it as we can. It's easy
to place a high value on the food we eat. But, there is such a thing
as too much of a good thing. God has given us many freedoms, but one
we should not abuse is the freedom to consume as much food as we want.
No one can limit what we eat except ourselves. We need to realize that
our daily bread supplies what we need, not what we want. Excessive
eating is selfishness, and selfishness is sin. When we feel the urge
to overeat, let us turn to God and nourish ourselves on the true bread
that comes from Him-His Word.

Today's thought: God's bread of life is nonfattening!

Living Through the Pits of Life

As we open to Psalm 40, David feels life's become like a horrible pit.
Probably the closest public event that would mirror David's life is
what the quake-struck residents of Haiti and Chile had felt, going
through the 7.0 quake that hit Haiti on 1/12/10 and the much larger
8.8 quake hit in Chile 2/27/10. Since these twin events:

list of 6 items
• Millions of lives were disrupted.
• Over 200,000 have died.
• Nearly 100,000 are still homeless.
• Tens of thousands got out of touch with friends and family.
• Multiplied thousands are jobless, and have become refugees.
• And all of them are unsure about the future.
list end

Events like those we watched are unforgettably imprinted upon our
memories.

The fear, pain, and hopelessness we saw reflected from the crowds
wandering around dazed by the devastation in the aftermath of those
quakes—is a collective picture of what both David, and many others
feel at times in life. Life after a huge disaster can aptly be
described as living in the pits.

What we saw hundreds of thousands of people facing together, is what
David faced alone for months. That is a summary of:

David's Life in the Pits

We are searching the Scriptures and finding the testimonies of David
from key events in his life that God has given to us as inspired
Psalms. Where is David when he wrote the 40th Psalm?

David had just gone through an emotional quake that is off the scale.
He was still feeling aftershocks, and in Psalm 40 he was remembering
life at the
bottom, life in the pits.

list of 6 items
• David had lost everything.
• David was homeless.
• David was out of touch with his family and friends and did not know
who
survived and who hadn't.
• David had no sure supply or food or water.
• David had to find an escape route to flee the dangers he faced.
• David's life and emotions were flooded by a hurricane of troubles.
list end

But David had a choice—sink into despair or flee to the Lord as his
refuge. That is the same choice we all have each day of our lives.

Sink or Find Refuge

David chose to flee to God for refuge; and wrote down in Psalm 40 the
pathway out for others who find themselves hitting the bottom in life.

*Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for You are
with me; Your rod and Your staff--they comfort me. Psalm 23:4, HCSB*

David's beautiful psalm about the Good Shepherd is one of the Bible's most
well-known passages. In fact, it's probably read or recited as much outside
of church as in it. Truly, this inspiring message of hope speaks in a way
that all of us can understand.

David did what every good writer does: he wrote about what he knew. He knew
lots about life's shadows, plus he was intimately acquainted with
shepherding. So he masterfully joined the two together to pen some of the
most comforting words of hope ever written.

David faced many dangers in his life--times when he didn't know if he'd
live out the day; times when he was misunderstood, threatened, and
attacked; times when the shame of his own sin sent him into the depths of
despair. Yet through it all, he experienced the unwavering presence of God.

Just as he once led his sheep through the valleys, David's Shepherd guided
him through the dark times in his life. Just as David's sheep used to
recognize his voice through the darkness and follow the sound, God's voice
brought comfort and direction to David when he didn't know where to go.

Life is full of shadows. There's evil out there--dangers and frightening
valleys where the mountains block out the light. But Jesus, your Good
Shepherd, will walk with you through the valleys and dispel the shadows of
fear.

What good things have you been kept from enjoying because of fear?

*"Songs of Thankfulness and Praise," ELW
310<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#134bc03b930e1ad2_hymn>
(Click
to view the hymn text below.)*

We have seen the star and followed the Magi to see Jesus. When we gather
today for worship we will see Jesus at the Jordan to be baptized by his
cousin John. Jesus has entered into our world as one of us. Now Jesus
enters the waters of repentance to know us as we are. This is beginning of
the journey that will follow to the cross and through the grave into the
great light of God's eternity.

This hymn, by Christopher Wordsworth (1807-1885), tells the story of the
season of Epiphany—in the waters of the Jordan, at the wedding at Cana, in
temptation, in healing and in the preaching of God's new reign.
Epiphany—appearance, manifestation, light shining over everything—lets us
see how God is at work in us and through us as we carry out the ministry of
Jesus in our time and place. In our baptism, we are given the gift of being
bearers of the light of Christ. Let your lights shine!

*Jesus our light, our life, our brother and friend, be with us each day as
we share your love in our words and actions. May all the earth see you
manifest in us. Amen. *

*"Songs of Thankfulness and Praise," ELW 310*

1 Songs of thankfulness and praise,
Jesus, Lord, to thee we raise;
manifested by the star to the sages from afar;
branch of royal David's stem
in thy birth at Bethlehem:
anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.

2 Manifest at Jordan's stream,
prophet, priest and king supreme;
and at Cana wedding guest in thy Godhead manifest;
manifest in pow'r divine,
changing water into wine;
anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.

3 Manifest in making whole weakened body, fainting soul;
manifest in valiant fight,
quelling all the devil's might;
manifest in gracious will,
ever bringing good from ill:
anthems be to thee addressed,
God in flesh made manifest.

4 Grant us grace to see thee, Lord,
present in thy holy word;
grace to imitate thee now and be pure, as pure art thou;
that we might become like thee at thy great epiphany,
and may praise thee, ever blest,
God in flesh made manifest.

*Jonathan*

*The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him
as his own soul. 1 Samuel 18:1 (NKJV) *

*Some Bible characters are so strong in one particular attribute that you
immediately think of it whenever they're mentioned. In Jonathan's case, we
immediately think of his faithful friendship towards David. *

*Jonathan defines all that a friend should be. He never once wavered in his
support or loyalty towards David, which is all the more impressive when you
understand the historical context of their friendship. *

*Keep in mind that Jonathan's father was Saul, the first-ever king of
Israel. Conventional wisdom would say that the king's son, Jonathan, would
be next in line to inherit the crown. But in this case, God had different
plans. He chose to strip Saul of the kingdom and give it to an irrelevant
shepherd boy named David. *

*If there were ever two people who seemed to be on a collision course, it
was Jonathan and David. And yet, they were the closest of friends. Jonathan
put loyalty ahead of his own desires. When it became clear God had chosen
David to rule Israel, Jonathan didn't go into self-preservation mode. He
faithfully stood by his friend, even at his own personal expense (1 Samuel
20).*

*What a precious commodity to have a Jonathan in your life! To have a
friend who is tried and true, who stands by your side no matter what, who
even puts the sanctity of your friendship ahead of his or her own desires. *

*In all likelihood, many of us don't have a friend like that. If not, why
not let it start with us? Take the challenge to be a loyal and faithful
friend, even if it comes at a personal expense. That kind of friendship has
a way of being reciprocated, and if we're lacking that "Jonathan" in our
lives, perhaps the solution is for us to be one.*

*A man who has friends must himself be friendly... Proverbs 18:24 (NKJV)*
*

Think About It… What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?

*He's Still There*

*Mark 1:40-42, NIV: "A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his
knees, 'If you are willing, you can make me clean.' Filled with compassion,
Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. 'I am willing,' he said.
'Be clean!' Immediately the leprosy left him and he was cured."*

*While Jesus was on earth, there were many sick and dying that were
healed--and many that were not. This fact did not escape the knowledge of
Jesus. "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?" Jesus asked, "Yet not one
of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father...So
don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." Christ is quite in
tune to the details of your life. He is aware of every little thing that
causes you joy--or causes you pain. While we do not always understand the
will of the Father as to why He would heal some while others continue to
struggle; we do know He has our best interest at heart, "He works all
things together for the good," and "He will never leave us nor forsake us."
Jesus still sees you, He is still filled with compassion concerning you,
and He is still willing to heal you in ways you could not imagine.*

Possessed by Christ
"I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but
Christ liveth in me: and the life I now live in the flesh I live by
the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."
Galatians 2:20 When we receive Christ as Savior, we have access to all
He has provided for us. We possess His life and nature, we are made a
new creation in Christ, and we are positionally in Christ. But there
is more! A radical change takes place when Christ possesses us, when
Christ has access to all of us! Paul said, "It is not I that lives,
but CHRIST LIVES IN ME!" He has possession of all there is of me, the
whole of my being. He is in sovereign control of my life.

When Christ possesses us, the self-imposed walls we have built around
us suddenly disappear. Gone! Those thoughts that generated "our image
and fostered our future" take on an entirely new perspective when
Christ possesses us.

Consider how Paul looked at his tribulations after he became a
believer. He could have said, "I have served God for years. I have
traveled, been beaten, suffered at the hands of evil men, been
shipwrecked, stoned, left for dead, falsely accused, robbed, in pain,
weary, cold, hungry, thirsty, in nakedness, and in peril on every
side! Why has all this come to me? It's not fair!" But there was not a
word of self-pity or any complaint for the things he endured. WHY?
Because Paul not only possessed the in-living Christ, but CHRIST
POSSESSED ALL OF PAUL!

Paul says I want you to see that all these things that I have
encountered since I became a believer have happened "unto the
furtherance of the Gospel." He saw God's hand in it all. Wow! Wouldn't
it be wonderful if we had such a focus of Christ in our life? I have
news for you: WE CAN! We serve the same Lord, who is the same
yesterday, today, and forever! It's a matter of CHRIST POSSESSING THE
WHOLE OF OUR LIFE! Paul does not focus on the trials and sufferings of
his life; they were but steppingstones that God permitted so that he
might be "conformed unto the image of His Son." Paul says, "In all
these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
To be "more than a conqueror" is not only to be victorious over the
enemy, but to take the very elements of battle that were used against
us and make them advantageous for our own use.

Let me illustrate. The printer and evangelist Dr. William Moon of
Brighton, England, was stricken with blindness at the height of is
career. He said, "Lord, I accept this blindness from you. Help me to
use it for your glory, that at your coming, you may receive your own
with great joy." Then God enabled him to invent the Moon Alphabet for
the blind, by which untold thousands have been able to read the
Scriptures and many of them have been gloriously saved. God did not
take away Paul's thorn in the flesh; He did better. Paul mastered that
thorn, made it his servant, and received the power to be "more than a
conqueror." The "ministry of thorns" often has been far greater than
the "ministry of thrones."

Oh that we might move to higher ground...to a new and living way...to
the exciting venture of being filled with the fullness of God. From
having "access to Christ" to BEING POSSESSED BY CHRIST! What a
difference!

My Heavenly Flight

My Heavenly Flight

When life gets tough and tries to drag me low........ I know it's time
to spread my wings, and to my heavenly Father I go.
He has the answers to all I need to get me through each day;
If I will give it all to Him, He'll help me find my way!
He knows just what is needed to help me rise above;
All life's daily struggles to find the peace that rests in His arms of love!
