Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe
Sing and rejoice, O daughter Zion! See, I am coming to dwell among
you, says the LORD. Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on
that day, and they shall be his people, and he will dwell among you,
and you shall know that the LORD of hosts has sent me to you.
Zechariah 2:14-15
"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High
will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called
holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also
conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her
who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." Luke
1:35-37
Piety
Remember us, our Lady of Guadalupe. In your appearance to Juan Diego
on Mount Tepeyac, you promised to show pity and compassion to all who,
loving and trusting you, seek your help and protection. Please listen
now to our request and grant us consolation and relief from the
temptations of this world so that we can fully respond to the word of
the Lord with obedience and stability. In hope, we rely upon your help
so that nothing will be able to get in the way of our conversion. As
the Mother of the Americas, intercede for us to be granted the graces
we need in our Fourth Day. Amen.
Study
The image of a pregnant woman makes it easy to understand how God
dwelled within Mary. Her actions and reactions to the news delivered
by the archangel Gabrielle cemented that understanding. In this way,
Mary's obedience is the perfect contrast to Eve's disobedience in the
Garden.
Mary's study of the prophets probably made her intimately familiar
with the words of the prophet Isaiah from whom we have been hearing
and listening during the Mass this Advent season. On the third Sunday
of Advent, we heard a reading from Isaiah 61 which laid the groundwork
for the Nazareth mission of Jesus…and the life of his mother. That
reading also is echoed today in the Gospel words from Gabriel and in
the life of Mary -- "The Holy Spirit will come upon you."
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed
me; he has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to heal the
brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the
prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the LORD and a day of
vindication by our God. Isaiah 61:1-2a
Action
Our study of this attitude of obedience can not end there. We must
take this to fulfillment in our piety and our action.
What are you being asked to obey these days? The new language in the
liturgy? The call for social action this holiday season? The pain of
your family and friends? The death of loved ones?
No matter how hard the burden, consider the attitude we hear over and
over again this season. Advent is only 28 days long. Yet today's
reading from Luke will be repeated four times in 28 days -- basically
once a week for the entire season. Over and over this season we will
hear these words echo: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it
be done to me according to your word."
How can this surrender to the word and will of God help us endure life
as we await the coming of the promised redeemer Lord? How can you
place yourself in the presence of the Lord and offer yourself to Him
just as he will offer Himself to you on December 25?
Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patron of the Americas and has a special
place in the Cursillo movement in this hemisphere. She can be of
special assistance in this season of waitingness and throughout the
rest of the liturgical calendar.

Third Sunday of Advent B
By Rev. Joe McCloskey, SJ
Isaiah 61:1-2a
Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give
thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. Do not
quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test
everything; retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil. 1
Thessalonians 5:16-22
A man named John was sent from God. He came for testimony, to testify
to the light, so that all might believe through him. He was not the
light, but came to testify to the light. John 1:6-8
Piety
Piety is the light of our life. The good we do shines out on our world
as the light of Christ. Our love brings the presence of God. "Wherever
there is love God is there." God is the love of our live. Piety is our
God life within our souls. Even as John could not claim to be the
Christ, piety is our Christ life and our claim on God's love for us.
We need only live our lives for the sake of those that are part of
them by giving our time and our energy to what needs doing and our
lives become the light of Christ and the love of God has its
brilliance in the ordinary becoming extraordinary by our sharing the
best of our heart with another. In jour Baptism Christ gives us his
life. In the good we do for one another, we give Christ flesh in who
we are in the good we do. We do not so much point out Christ as become
Christ by living our lives with Christ becoming the need we have of
each other. Whatever is done for the least one, Christ takes as done
for himself because he identifies with our need. John could only point
out Christ. We can become Christ by our piety making it possible to
live the life of Christ for each other.
Study
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon us when we bring good tidings to
the poor and when we do our best to heal the brokenhearted. We study
how to proclaim liberty to the captives and release to prisoners. The
good of our lives announce a year of favor from God. Our hearts fill
up with joy when we do our best to bring the salvation of the Lord to
those who need our goodness. By our staying close to the Lord through
study and good companionship the justice and the praise of God springs
out of what we do in the name of the Lord.
Action
The good that we do and the good that others do that we are a part of
allow us to rejoice always in the Lord. When our tasks seem beyond our
strength, we find our work becoming our prayer as the Lord shows his
strength in the midst of our weakness. The Lord wraps our action with
the mantle of justice as God takes the littleness of our efforts and
makes something special out of them for our world. Our work proclaims
the greatness of the Lord as we surrender our actions to the great
things the Lord can do for us his lowly servants. We are called to
carry the cross of Christ for the world we serve. The love of the Lord
flowing through us is only limited by the smallness of our vision. Our
work reaches the whole world if we offer our lives in the name of
Christ for the world we are part of in the extent of our love. The
only limit on God's love flowing out of us is the intention we have in
the offering of our lives for others. We have cause to rejoice just
like Mary when we realize how wonderful are the things the Lord can do
through us if we invite him to use us. Our lives can be his goodness
to the world. Our joy is fulfilled in how we offer our lives for each
other. Christ invites us to love our world even as he has loved us by
giving our life for each other.

Saturday of the First Week of Advent
You were destined, it is written, in time to come to put an end to
wrath before the day of the LORD, To turn back the hearts of fathers
toward their sons, and to re-establish the tribes of Jacob. Blessed is
he who shall have seen you and who falls asleep in your friendship.
Sirach 48:10-11
"Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" He said in
reply, "Elijah will indeed come and restore all things; but I tell you
that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him but did
to him whatever they pleased. So also will the Son of Man suffer at
their hands." Matthew 17:10-12

Save us, O Lord, carry us back, rouse your power and come.
Rescue your people, show us your face, bring us back.
O Shepherd of Israel hear us. Return and we shall be saved.
Arise, O Lord, hear our cries, O Lord; bring us back!
How long will you hide from your people? we long to see your face,
give ear to us, draw near to us, Lord God of hosts!
Turn again, care for your vine, protect what your right hand has
planted,
Your vineyards are trampled, uprooted and burned. Come to us, Father
of Might!
("Save Us, Oh Lord" by Bob Dufford, performed by the St. Louis
Jesuits)
Study
Dom Basil Pennington has several books written and talks recorded on
the Rule of St. Benedict. In "Listen With Your Heart," he uses an
expression over and over again, an expression that rolls off the tip
of his tongue quite frequently as you listen to him at least with your
ears. "We are all poor, weak, stupid sinners."
Part of maturity is coming to the realization to accept the fact that
we are all poor, weak, stupid sinners, he explains.
That idea came to mind as I was reflecting on the Psalm today. Because
we are all poor, weak, stupid sinners, we behave like a very poor
image of God. Jesus was the perfect image of God. The easiest way for
redemption might be if we just throw up our hands and surrender. Lord,
make us turn to you. Don't make us battle with the forces of
temptation. The forces of sin in the world are so strong and we are
all poor, weak, stupid sinners. Abbot Pennington tells us so. Do not
make us convert. Change is hard and we are weak. Just wave your
healing hands and force us to turn to you.
Ah! That would be so easy for God and for us. Yet that is not the path
of Advent. That is not the path of the cross. That is not the path of
life. We have to choose our path. Piety puts us in the right frame of
mind. Study helps us find the map to where we should go. But only our
action -- action rooted in our free will -- will help us turn toward
our God (whom we need) and away from the world and all we do not need
-- a world filled with poor, weak, stupid sinners and all of the
wondrous gifts we have from the Lord.
God is always there for us like the father in the Prodigal Son story.
He will protect what the right hand has planted. Yet we are free to
stray and get down in the weeds. We can take our inheritance and run
off to a foreign land. God won't make us turn back to him. Yet at the
first sign that we are accepting His holy invitation and coming home,
he will rush out and greet us.
Action
We are nearly half way through with Advent. Have you put on the spirit
of Psalm 80? If we make that a part of our mind, our heart and our
action, then we are taking the first steps of the Prodigal daughters
and sons to turn toward that little town of Bethlehem and set out to
complete our census. Who know what will happen when we get there.
