Will The Christ Child Come?

Halfway through December we were doing the regular evening things when
there was a knock at the door. We opened it to find a small package
with a beautiful ceramic lamb inside. We looked at the calendar and
realized that the 12 days of Christmas were beginning!! We waited
excitedly for the next night's surprise and only then, with the gift
of a matching shepherd, did we realize that the lamb was part of a
nativity set.

Each night we grew more excited to see what piece we would receive.
Each was exquisitely beautiful. The kids kept trying to catch the
givers as we slowly built the scene at the manager and began to focus
on Christ's birth.

On Christmas Eve, all the pieces were in place, but the baby Jesus. My
12 year-old son really wanted to catch our benefactors and began to
devise all kinds of ways to trap them. He ate his dinner in the mini-
van watching and waiting, but no one came.

Finally we called him in to go through our family's Christmas Eve
traditions. But before the kids went to bed we checked the front step-
No Baby Jesus! We began to worry that my son had scared them off. My
husband suggested that maybe they dropped the Jesus and there wouldn't
be anything coming. Somehow something was missing that Christmas Eve.

There was a feeling that things weren't complete. The kids went to bed
and I put out Christmas, but before I went to bed I again checked to
see if the Jesus had come - no, the doorstep was empty. In our family
the kids can open their stockings when they want to, but they have to
wait to open any presents until Dad wakes up. So one by one they woke
up very early and I also woke up to watch them.

Even before they opened their stockings, each child checked to see if
perhaps during the night the baby Jesus had come. Missing that piece
of the set seemed to have an odd effect. At least it changed my focus.
I knew there were presents under the tree for me and I was excited to
watch the children open their gifts, but first on my mind was the
feeling of waiting for the ceramic Christ Child.

We had opened just about all of the presents when one of the children
found one more for me buried deep beneath the limbs of the tree. He
handed me a small package from my former visiting teaching companion.
This sister was somewhat less active in the church. I had learned over
time they didn't have much for Christmas, so that their focus was the
children. It sounded like she didn't get many gifts to open, so I had
always given her a small package - new dish towels, the next year's
lesson manual - not much, but something for her to open. I was touched
when at Church on the day before Christmas, she had given me this
small package, saying it was just a token of her love and
appreciation.

As I took off the bow, I remembered my friendship with her and was
filled with gratitude for knowing her and for her kindness and
sacrifice in this year giving me a gift. But as the paper fell away, I
began to tremble and cry. There in the small brown box was the baby
Jesus. He had come!

I realized on that Christmas Day that Christ will come into our lives
in ways that we don't expect. The spirit of Christ comes into our
hearts as we serve one another. We had waited and watched for him to
come, expecting the dramatic "knock at the door and scurrying of feet"
but he came in a small, simple package that represented service,
friendship, gratitude, and love.

This experience taught me that the beginning of the true spirit of
Christmas comes as we open our hearts and actively focus on the
Savior. But we will most likely find him in the small and simple acts
of love, friendship and service that we give to each other. This
Christmas I want to feel again the joy of knowing that Christ is in
our home. I want to focus on loving and serving. More than that I want
to open my heart to Him all year that I may see Him again.

Don't forget the reason for the Season.

To this end we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy
of His calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every work
of faith by His power.

2 Thessalonians 1:11

Not long ago, I woke up early for some reason with a strange, urgent
need to pray for a member of our church. Now, I hadn't thought about
this person in several months, but I had been meeting with him and
helping him through some problems in his life before he abruptly
stopped making his regular appointment.

So I went ahead and got up and spent some time in prayer for him. The
very next Sunday, just a few days after I prayed, I walked into church
and he was the first person I saw. Imagine that… I didn't see him for
months, God lays him on my heart to pray for, and he's the first
person I see the very next Sunday!

So we sat and talked for awhile, and I had a great time just
encouraging him and praying for him. He told me what God was doing in
his life, and I let him know God was still laying him on my heart. It
was wonderful!

This experience reminded me of the powerful impact prayer for another
person can have. When you pray for others, God is supernaturally
allowing you to bless them and make a difference in their lives no
matter where they are. So do this: make a list of your top five people
you want to pray for, spend time praying for them over the next few
weeks, and watch God do something great!

GOD ANSWERS PRAYER WHEN YOU PRAY FOR OTHERS. SO MAKE A LIST OF OTHER
PEOPLE TO PRAY FOR AND WATCH GOD WORK IN THEIR LIVES!

Coffee Break

"Don't You Waver"

"Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for
he is faithful that promised;)." Hebrews 10:23

If there is any wavering it is clear that it is on our part, not
God's. He is faithful- always has been, always will be. He hasn't
changed and He never will. He was faithful in the past and He will be
faithful in the future. He was faithful yesterday and He will still
be today. He remains faithful even when we aren't.

We are the ones who need to hold fast- be firm, not give up, not
change, not waver- in our profession of faith, in our trust in Him, in
our belief in His word. We are the ones who need to anchor our trust
in His word, pattern our lives after it, build our hopes upon it. And
we can, because He is faithful as promised.

How do we hold fast our profession of His faithfulness? How do we
keep from wavering when the storms and trials come? By being grounded
in His word. By hiding it in our hearts. By studying it. By
renewing our minds with it. By keeping it before our eyes and in the
hearing of our ears. This will build our faith and reinforce the
foundation of His faithfulness that we are standing upon.

Have a great day. God will always be faithful, there is no wavering
in Him.

Rubber Bands for Rina
Karen Ehman

"Then these righteous ones will reply, 'Lord, when did we ever see you
hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a
stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing?
When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the
King will say, 'I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the
least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'"
Matthew 25:37-40 (NLT)

"What's up with the rubber bands, Mom?"

Curiosity shone in my nine-year-old son's face as he coaxed a beige
wad out of his Christmas stocking. One by one our three children
discovered, nestled beneath foil-wrapped candies and glittery
trinkets, a tangled mass of rubber bands.

"When you've finished, Dad and I will explain," I answered with a wink
to my husband.

My children were about to get a lesson in giving, even as they were
receiving. Those rubber bands represented more than a way to bind up
loose things; they represented the life of a child in need.

As a family we sponsor a little girl from Indonesia through Compassion
International's program in her local church. Rina's smiling face in
the photograph on our fridge reminds us to serve "the least of these"
and be thankful for the bounty we enjoy. Each month we tuck a check in
an envelope wrapped in prayer. It's our way of investing in Rina's
education, spiritual growth and basic physical needs.

We regularly get updates on what she's learning at church as well as
her academic progress and health. Compassion International also gives
us a peek at Rina's family life and activities she enjoys. Not too
long before Christmas, one sentence stopped me in my tracks: "Rina
helps out around her home, caring for her younger siblings and
assisting her mother with the cooking and with the family's animals.
She also enjoys playing with rubber bands."

My heart sank. What! No dolls? No balls? Not even a jump rope? When
finished with her chores, this precious girl passes time by playing
with flimsy rubber bands. Hot tears poured as I eyed my own kids'
overflowing toy box. Many items hadn't been touched in months.

That Christmas, my husband and I cut back on buying gifts for our
family in order to send extra money to Compassion to purchase a
special present for Rina. And, I prayed a portion of the offering
would buy her a doll.

After our children had finished opening gifts in their stockings, we
read Rina's report. "Can you imagine playing only with rubber bands?"
I asked. "When we read that, Dad and I decided to use some of the
money we would have spent on you to buy a present for Rina."

Two kids were immediately glad we did and one slightly sulked.
However, we were all thrilled a few months later when Rina wrote us a
letter scrawled in her own handwriting, and translated to English:
"Thank you so greatly for the gift of the new clothes. And the doll."
I just smiled. The previously sulking child asked if this could become
an annual tradition.

Whether it's next door or across the world, people are in need.
Today's key verse invites us to consider those lacking refreshment,
encouragement or care. We are told that when we reach out to someone
in any kind of need, it's not just a neighbor, co-worker or child
across the world playing with rubber bands we are serving ... it's
Jesus.

This verse challenges me to pause in the midst of my holiday hustle
and consider ways I can reach out to others and make their lives
better. There is always something we can do - whether it's prepare a
meal for a family struggling financially, share toys with a child or
spend time with someone alone. The size of the gift doesn't matter -
it's the love behind the gift that does.

God chose to make our lives better that first Christmas. He gave us
His Son so that we, prisoners of sin, hungering for truth, and
thirsting for living water, might have eternal life. Now it is our
turn. A simple gesture. Done in His Name. A life just might be changed
forever.

Not only someone else's life ... but ours as well.

Dear Lord, are there those You want me to reach out to this Christmas?
Speak. I'm listening. Show me how and where I can give. In Jesus'
Name, Amen.

Conviction for the Believer

Romans 1:24-25, Psalm 23

Recently I spoke to a heartbroken woman. Her father was dying, and he
was cold toward his family and God. He desired no contact and refused
to discuss any spiritual matter.

But God is able to reach anyone—even someone hostile to the faith.
Consider the apostle Paul's conversion! Yet Scripture also teaches
that the Lord eventually gives people over to the hardness of their
own hearts. There may come a point when He no longer draws them by
revealing their need for a Savior.

The situation is different for believers, though. When we, in our
humanness, continue to sin, the Holy Spirit convicts us so we'll get
back on track. At that point, we can humbly repent and follow Him or
ignore His voice and continue to sin. If we persist in error, our
Father will keep calling us back. But the danger is that our hearts
may become desensitized and eventually we may cease hearing His
warning.

Thankfully, we are children of God, and He loves us too much to let us
remain in a sinful pattern. Though chastisement and conviction are
never pleasant, He knows our travelling down the wrong road results in
much greater heartache. The Lord is a shepherd, using His staff and
rod to lovingly bring us to green pastures.

On the Christian journey, there will be temptations to stray, falsely
promising to satisfy longings. Stay closely connected to Jesus through
prayer and Scripture. Be listening so you can obey immediately when He
calls you to change course. In the long run, living God's way brings
the greatest joy.

Welcome to the Nugget

Today's Devotional:
LESSONS ON REBIRTH FROM THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Part 1: Introduction and
The Virgin Birth

INTRODUCTION

Did you ever think about the fact that we put a lot more hoopla into
the
celebration of Christmas than we do into the celebration of Easter?
Though Easter is becoming much more commercialized in the Western
world, it still doesn't top the Christmas celebration. Or the
"Holidays" as we've been admonished to say. What, with santas running
around on street corners, "Holiday" sales in every store, lights and
blow-up lawn ornaments, why, one would think that this is the greater
of the two celebrations!

It makes me think, and I have to ask myself, "What is more important:
The
birth of our Lord and Saviour, or His death and resurrection?"

My natural tendency has always been to think that His death and
resurrection, the two vital pieces of Salvation, are the most
important
pieces of the story. Couple this with the relative lack of hoopla
around Easter, and it's a natural choice!

But wait: Did God call Wisemen from the East to visit Jesus when He
was
resurrected? Did His star light up the universe the night Jesus died?
Did
the angel choir sing for all to hear when Jesus lay in the grave?

It's true that Jesus death and resurrection is what brings us
salvation,
it's what makes it all possible. And there were plenty of miracles
associated with it as well, but perhaps all of the advertisement that
God put into Jesus' birth is there to teach us some important lessons.

When I think of Jesus' birth, I am reminded that the new life in
Christ is
often referred to as "rebirth": "Jesus answered and said to him,
'Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God.'" (John 3:3 NKJV); and "Since you have purified your
souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the
brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been
born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the
word of God which lives and abides forever …" (1 Peter 1:22-23 NKJV)

Could it be that through the story of Jesus' miraculous birth, God is
trying
to help us understand the importance of the rebirth process? The
importance of the new life in Christ?

This 5-part Christmas mini-series will look for clues about the
rebirth
process in the miracles that occurred around Jesus' birth. Let's begin
with
…

THE IMMACULATE BIRTH

"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin
shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel."
(Isa 7:14 NKJV)

There are many stories of miraculous births in the Bible, but perhaps
the
most miraculous of all is this one: The virgin Mary conceived and bore
a
son! In fact, this has to be the most miraculous birth of all times!

But wait a minute: Is it more miraculous than the rebirth process?

The Bible tells us that in our sinful state, we are dirty. But this
doesn't
sound too, bad, does it? After all, when I come in from cutting the
grass,
my hands are a little dirty. I wash them, and I'm good to go.

But there is another kind of dirty. Take, for example, when my golden
retriever runs through a muddy ditch! Now THAT is dirty! And it's just
this
run-through-the-mud kind of dirty that represents our sinful state:
"Though your sins are like scarlet …Though they are red like crimson
…"
(Isa 1:18 NKJV)

To God, our sins look dried-blood red! Not very appealing!

And the Bible goes on to say that "There is none who seeks after God.
They have all turned aside."
(Rom 3:10-12 NKJV)

That means that without Jesus, not only are we dried-blood,
run-through-the-mud dirty, but we don't even seek after God!

When my dog has been running through a muddy ditch, she could care
less that she's dirty. She would never seek to take a bath. Ever. And
that's how we are in our sinful state! We are dirty from sin, and we
don't seek anything better!

Imagine a new life in Christ budding from THAT!

Just as Mary became pregnant with the Holy Spirit, it is the Holy
Spirit who convicts us of sin: "And when He has come, He will convict
the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment" (John 16:8-9
NKJV).
When we accept Jesus' gift of Salvation, "though your sins be as
scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow…" (Isa 1:18 KJV)

In addition to salvation, Christ comes to live in our hearts: "To them
God
willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery â
€¦
which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."
(Col 1:27-28 NKJV
); and "if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the
Spirit
is life because of righteousness."
(Rom 8:10-11 NKJV)

Jesus' birth to a virgin was a miracle, indeed. But so is the process
of
rebirth in Christ. This Christmas, as we contemplate the miracle of
the
virgin birth, let's think about the miracle of the rebirth. We have
been brought OUT of our lives of sin, we have been CLEANSED from ALL
unrighteousness! We are truly reborn in Christ Jesus!

Please join us next Thursday for LESSONS ON REBIRTH FROM THE
CHRISTMAS
STORY, Part 2: The Heavenly choir.

This is what the LORD says -He who made
you, who formed you in the womb
( Isaiah 44:2 *NKJV )

God knew you long before you were born, just as
He knew Isaiah and Jeremiah. He thought about you and
planned for you! For He wanted someone just like you,
therefore you are very special to Him. After all God has
said; "Before I formed you in the womb I knew
you, before you were born I set you apart."
( Jeremiah 1:5 )

So when you feel discouraged or inadequate, remember
that God has always thought of you as very valuable. He is
always with you and He loves you dearly, and nothing can
separate you from that love! For I am convinced that
neither death nor life, neither angels nor
demons, neither the present nor the future,
nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor
anything else in all creation, will be able to
separate us from the love of God that is in
Christ Jesus our Lord. ( Romans 8:38-39 )

So never feel that you are unloved, or let one of
life's many discouragements set you back, instead; Be
confident of this, that He who began a good work
in you will carry it on to completion until the day
of Christ Jesus. Amen ( Philippians 1:6 )

Adapting Ministry

1 Corinthians 9:22
I have become all things to all men, that I may be all means save some

The world at the end of the twentieth century is changing at an alarming
rate. People are under tremendous stress to keep up with the rapid rate of
change. The ecclesiastical challenge is to give anxious people the timeless
message of Christ and present it in a contemporary way that relates to a
changing culture.

Many of the older and mature saints who rightfully constitute the boards
and committees in our traditional evangelical churches resist change. They
are comfortable with the form of worship, style of music, and methods of
teaching that brought them to Christ and helped them mature. They get
uncomfortable when a young pastor comes in with new ideas.

Jesus said you can't put new wine into old wineskins (Luke 5:37). The
wineskins don't represent the substance of our faith; they represent the
package our faith comes in. Christian practices wear out their purposes and
the next generation doesn't relate to them.

Jesus not only came to fulfill the law, but He also came to usher in a new
age. The Jewish community was locked in tradition. Most of the opposition
didn't come when He presented the truth, but when He confronted their
traditions. When one doesn't conform to the customs and practices of the
status quo, the establishment will be offended. The new wine often comes
under the scrutiny, and sometimes the wrath, of the old wineskins.

I had the privilege of helping an established church through an
organizational change. The pastor had been there for 30 years and had led
the church from its beginnings to more than 1000 attenders. The
organization had evolved with little planning or purpose, so we reorganized
26 committees into seven. Although the organizational change was
significant, it took place without any dissension. The major key in this
case was the vision and credibility of the pastor, who realized the need
for new wineskins.

God is leading us into the twenty-first century, and we must learn how to
adapt our ministry to a changing culture.

Prayer: Lord, enable me to establish my life on the substance of faith, not
the package of traditions and customs it comes in.

Read Hebrews 5 – 7
Highlights:
Jesus was chosen by God to be our High Priest (Heb. 5:1-10). He (Jesus)
became the Author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him (5:9;
Rom. 6:23).
In Israel, there was a vast difference between the high priest and the
other priests. Only the high priest was permitted annually to enter the
Holy of Holies and into the very presence of God. He alone bore on his
forehead the golden crown with the words: Holiness to the Lord (Ex.
28:36-38), and only he could offer sacrifices for the sins of the nation
and intercede on the annual Day of Atonement.
In the Old Testament, a sinless animal was substituted for an Israelite and
was slain in his place for his sin. Thus, the devout Jew was continually
reminded that it is the blood that maketh an atonement for the soul (Lev.
17:11). But the need for animal sacrifices ceased on the day Jesus, the
sinless Son of God, died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins as
the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He
(also) became the Author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him
(Heb. 5:9).
How thankful we are that mercy is an attribute of God, for it is one of our
greatest daily needs! Mercy is an expression of His willingness to forgive
sinners and deliver them from eternal hell. Mercy is a practical
demonstration of love and compassion. But, because God is holy, He must
also enforce the penalty for sin without respect of persons (I Pet. 1:17),
and the wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23).
Under the Levitical priesthood, it was emphasized many times that God is
merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and Truth,
Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin
(Ex. 34:6-7). How much more we can be assured of the mercy of God through
Christ, our exalted Lord, because He makes intercession for us (Heb. 7:25;
9:24)!
Our highest privilege is to press on to be like Him and treasure the will
of God as the most precious thing in our lives. Too often our trouble is
not that we do not know the will of God but, rather, that we choose our
will instead of His though He makes it clear.
Christ's soon return should be our strongest motivation to do the Savior's
will. Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the
great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; who gave Himself for us, that He
might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar
people, zealous of good works (Titus 2:13-14).
Thought for Today:
Ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your
spirit, which are God's (I Cor. 6:20).

2 Peter 3

Some people will scoff at the Day of the Lord, but we ought to purify
ourselves for it.

INSIGHT
Most people agree that the world cannot last forever. Eventually the
hydrogen in the sun will burn out, and the sun will grow cold, destroying
the earth in the process. So how will the earth end? The Bible tells us
that the day will come when the heavens and the earth will be destroyed by
fire. It may not happen soon, but it will happen. Since all of us must face
"the end" sometime, Peter writes that as we look forward to these things,
we should accept salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.

PRAYER
Though we are not always consistent in our Christian walk, we can praise
the Lord that He is always faithful to us:
Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us,
But to Your name give glory,
Because of Your mercy,
Because of Your truth. . . .
You who fear the Lord, trust in the Lord;
He is their help and their shield. . . .
But we will bless the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore.
Praise the Lord! (Psalm 115:1, 11, 18).

Pause for praise and thanksgiving.

Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from
sin:
Remember, O Lord, Your tender mercies and Your lovingkindnesses,
For they are from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions;
According to Your mercy remember me,
For Your goodnessÕ sake, O Lord (Psalm 25:6-7).

Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. Now pray this
affirmation to the Lord:
Jesus answered and said to him, "If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word;
and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with
him."
(John 14:23)

As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:
spiritual victory over sin,
opportunities to serve the Lord in your home, office, or neighborhood,
your activities for the day.
Finally, offer this closing prayer to the Lord:
Teach us to number our days,
That we may gain a heart of wisdom. . . .
Oh, satisfy us early with Your mercy,
That we may rejoice and be glad all our days! (Psalm 90:12, 14).

Spiritual Harassment

"Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone
to devour" (1 Peter 5:8-9).
I was twenty years old when I approached the first tee of the sectional
qualifying round of the Professional Golfers Association US Open, one of
the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. I was a college golfer
and was teeing it up with the world's best golfers. I was competing against
many of the tour players for only a handful of spots available to get into
the tournament.
I was called to the tee and teed up my ball when something unusual
happened. As I am looking down at my ball I notice the shoes of someone
standing no more than two feet from where I am about to tee off. I am
thinking to myself with great irritation, "Who in the world is standing
this close to me!?" I look up and it is Sam Snead, still one of golf's
greatest players. This man was known for intimidating tactics. But this was
beyond belief. Here he was trying to intimidate a young college player. I
proceeded to ignore his presence and hit the ball straight down the fairway.
In the spiritual realm we deal with spiritual harassment from Satan and his
legions. The Bible says "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this
dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms"
(Eph. 6:12). It is important to recognize when we are coming against these
forces. Satan attempts to distract us from our calling and destiny in life.
We often trivialize the reality of the spirit realm of evil.
Paul tells us we must set our minds to deal with the spiritual realm of
evil when it impacts our lives. "Therefore put on the full armor of God, so
that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and
after you have done everything, to stand. (Eph 6:13).
The next time you feel obstacles have been placed in your life designed to
distract you from your God-ordained mission, remember Paul's words and
stand firm in Christ.

Gifts That Matter Part 1

Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
If you give, you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full
measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running
over. Whatever measure you use in giving—large or small—it will be used to
measure what is given back to you (Luke 6:38, NLT).
Friend to Friend
The world would like us to believe that the success of Christmas depends
upon how much we spend, how many presents we give or how many presents we
receive. Christmas is about giving, but price tags do not determine the
success of our giving. Giving is not dependent on the condition of our
checkbooks. Giving is dependent on the condition of our hearts. I am so
glad! Like you, we have to plan carefully what we buy and how much we spend
on each gift. As a result, we have discovered some creative ways to give
gifts from the heart, meaningful gifts that cost very little.
A homemade gift
In 1 Corinthians 4:12, Paul teaches that we should "work hard with our own
hands." This principle can easily be applied to Christmas gifts. Giving a
homemade gift represents time, thought and is a part of you. When our
children were small, one of our favorite Christmas traditions was to create
and deliver a homemade hot chocolate mix in decorated mason jars to our
neighbors. We placed the jars just to the left of each neighbor's front
door, rang their doorbell and ran like crazy! I am not certain who enjoyed
it the most … our neighbors or us. But every year, we were amazed by how
much the neighbors enjoyed our homemade gift. (By the way, the recipe
posted on my website if you want to carry on this tradition.)
A possession gift
In Matthew 6:40, Jesus spoke about giving away the shirt and coat on our
backs. Giving something we already own can be a wonderful Christmas gift if
it is something of special value to us. In other words, it is not the idea
of getting rid of junk but sharing our treasure. Do not ask the question,
"What can I buy for Sally?" Ask the question, "What do I have that would
mean a lot to Sally?" My husband is a pastor. During a message, Dan
mentioned he collects old Bibles. The next Christmas, one of our church
members gave him a family Bible that had been passed down through several
generations of family members. It was and still is one of Dan's most
precious possessions.
A gift of time
Time is a valuable gift, a precious commodity. The apostle Paul wrote, "Be
very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, making the
most of every opportunity" (Ephesians 5:15-16, NIV). When we give someone
30 minutes of our time, we are giving them 30 minutes of our lives. While
Dan was in seminary, we rarely had a spare minute or extra dollar between
school, jobs and babies. A close friend who knew our schedule gave us a
precious gift of time. "I have no money but wanted to give you a gift for
Christmas," he said, handing us a card. Inside was a coupon for free
childcare one afternoon each week for the spring semester. That was over
twenty-five years ago, and I still remember that wonderful gift of time.
A gift of prayer
The greatest gift we can give someone is the commitment to pray for them
consistently. James writes, "Pray for each other so that you may be healed.
The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and wonderful
results" (James 5:16, NLT). Following our traditional Christmas Eve
service, an elderly lady approached Dan and said, "I don't have anything to
give you, Pastor. But I want you to know that I will pray for you, Mary and
the kids every morning this year at 6:00 a.m." And she did! What a
priceless gift! Every time she saw us, this sweet lady asked what we needed
and how she should pray. Only Heaven knows all that God accomplished in our
lives through the prayers of this godly woman.
A gift of encouragement
As the writer of Proverbs says, encouragement is a powerful gift. "An
anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up" (Proverbs
12:25, NIV). We assume the people in our lives know how much they mean to
us. They rarely do. This Christmas, write a letter to someone you love and
appreciate, telling them how important they are to you. Be specific. A
written note or letter requires time, careful thought and allows that
person to read your words of encouragement again and again. One of my most
prized possessions is a blue wooden box our son built and gave me one year
for Christmas. In that box, I store notes, letters and cards of affirmation
so on my "blue" days, I can pull out a dose of encouragement. One year, I
wrote a letter of encouragement to my husband and to each child. The
letters were placed in decorated envelopes, tied to branches of the
Christmas tree and opened first on Christmas morning.
On Thursday, I will share with you six more gifts from the heart. I pray
this holiday season will lead us once again to the manger, where we will
worship the Christ child and experience a Christmas holiday filled with
love, peace and joy.

Let's Pray
Father, teach us to celebrate Your birth in the way we give to others.
Lord, I don't want to get caught up in buying gifts that make me feel good.
I want to give gifts that honor God, encourage others and point them to the
real reason for this season – Jesus. Be glorified in every gift I give this
year.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

~THE DAY WHEN THERE SHALL BE NO MORE NIGHT~

Revelation 22: 1-5
* * * * * * * * * * *
There is coming a day when the darkness of this old world shall be no
more. All things will be
made new, as heaven and earth will pass away. The new Jerusalem shall
descend from heaven
above prepared as a bride, adorned for her husband. All whose names are
written in the Lamb's
Book of Life are a part of the heavenly city of God, and shall reign with
the Lord forever.

The great city, holy Jerusalem, shall have the glory of God and her light
will be like unto
a stone most precious, even a jasper stone, clear as crystal. The wall of
the city shall be great
and high, with twelve gates and at the gates twelve angels, and names
written thereon, which
are the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. The city shall lie
foursquare, and the length be
as large as the breadth; with the length, breadth, and height being equal.
The building of the wall
shall be of jasper, and the city of pure gold, such as we have not seen on
this earth, even like unto
clear glass. We can't picture the beauty of the walls of jasper and gates
of pearls. Even the streets
shall be of pure gold.

We are told there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the
Lamb shall be in it; and
God's servants shall serve Him. We shall see His face, and His name shall
be in our foreheads.
There will be no need for candle in that great city, or light of the sun.
For the Lord God shall
give light, as the light of the city will be God Himself.

And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither
whatsoever maketh abomination,
or maketh a lie; but they which are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.
And God shall wipe away all
tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow,
nor crying, neither shall
there be any more pain: for the former things will be passed away, when God
makes all things new.

The fearful, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, whoremongers, sorcerers,
and idolaters, and all
liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and
brimstone; which is the second death.
Blessed and holy are all those who have part in the first resurrection, as
the second death shall have
no power over these.

One day the river of the water of life will proceed out of the throne of
God and the Lamb. It will be
clear as crystal and on each side of the river, there will be the tree of
life, which will bear twelve
manner of fruits and yield her fruit each month. The leaves of the tree
will be for the
healing of the nations.

Can you imagine a river so pure it is clear as crystal? The beauty and
splendor that
awaits us cannot be fully comprehended, but we can anticipate the glory of
God which will
outshine everything else which we shall behold. He that overcometh shall
inherit all things,
and the Lord tells us, "I will be his God, and he shall be my son." He
will give unto all that
is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely. What a glorious
day it shall be when
we shall see Jesus face to face, and know that the sufferings of this life
were not worthy
to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed, on that great day.
We must keep the
faith as we keep on "keeping on" for Jesus. Heaven will surely be worth it
all on that glorious
day when there shall be no more night.

Blessings In Christ,

VERSE:
When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf,
do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless
and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the
work of your hands.
-- Deuteronomy 24:19

THOUGHT:
This is clearly a passage old Scrooge hadn't seen! God has
always set aside a provision for the poor. In this time of the year
when many people world over take special time to look after those
who are less fortunate, let's open our date books and schedule a
week to dedicate time for special generosity in May and in August
to go with a heart committed to be generous all the time. Let's not
let generosity and concern for those less fortunate be a once a
year thing!

PRAYER:
For all of your wonderful gifts of kindness and grace, I thank
you, dear Father and God. Please stir my heart to care for others
as you do. Please help me keep that spirit of concern alive all
year long and not just around Christmas time. In Jesus' name I ask
this. Amen.

Helping Children Grieve
Day 187

Children can accept loss if there is something to hope for, something
to look forward to. But if they view their lives as one loss after
another, recovery is extremely difficult.

Here are some general guidelines in helping your children grieve:
. Understand that children have feelings even if they do not show
them. A child's initial response, like adults, is denial.
. Tell your children about the feelings you are struggling with.
. Tell them they are not responsible for the loss.
. Help them understand what has happened. Share just enough details to
satisfy their questions, avoiding anything that would traumatize them.
. Be there for them. They need more than words. Your presence can help
them grieve the loss.
. Help them remember the good times and encourage them to share their emotions.
. Empathize with their hurt without condoning any wrong behavior.

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on
the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget
you!" (Isaiah 49:15).

Lord, You love my children even more than I do. Give me the wisdom to
care for them and nurture them through my grief. Amen.

In Jesus'
Name, Amen.

Application Steps:
Gather your family or group of close friends. Brainstorm who might
need some extra love or material goods this Christmas season.

What specifically could you do for them? Outline action steps and plan
to follow through over the next few weeks.

Reflections:
Have I ever been the recipient of a loving Christmas gesture? How did
it impact my life?

Power Verses:
Proverbs 31:20, "She opens her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out
her filled hands to the needy [whether in body, mind, or spirit]."

So familiar are the vine and the branches, it is not necessary to
explain that the branches and the vine are one. The vine does not say,
"I am the central trunk and you are the little branches." Rather it
acknowledges, "I am the whole thing, and you are the whole thing."

Jesus counts us partakers of His nature. Without me ye can do nothing.
The husband and the wife and many other illustrations contribute to
our understanding of this marvelous teaching. It has no parallel, no
precedent in any other teaching: that Christ is the life of His
people, and we are absolutely linked with and dependent upon Him. All
other systems teach how much man is and may become. Christianity shows
how a man must lose all he is if he would come into full unity with
Christ in His life.

Lord, help me this day to abide in Thee.

Oh! what a wonderful place

Jesus has given to me!

Saved by His glorious grace,

I may be even as He.

Scripture
He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much
fruit; for without me ye can do nothing—John 15:5
