Spending Our Inheritance

Ephesians 1:11-22

The word "inheritance" usually brings to mind the money and real
estate handed down from one generation to another. But God has an even
greater legacy to share with His children—one that they are given the
moment they enter His family.

Galatians 4:7 tells us that believers are God's heirs. First among our
priceless treasures is a living hope in Jesus Christ that cannot be
taken away (1 Peter 1:3). What's more, He pledged to supply our needs
according to His riches (Phil 4:19). In other words, we already have
all that we need for an abundant and victorious life.

However, some folks get stuck in spiritual poverty because they refuse
to view themselves as adopted children. Failing to tap into their
inheritance, they're like a man who sees himself as a poor, sinful
creature: he wanders through this big angry world hoping to hold on to
his meager scrap of faith until he's lucky enough to die and go to
heaven. Of course that man misses the blessings available in this
life, because he's not looking for them.

How differently people see themselves when they look through the eyes
of Jesus. Christians who live like the beloved, empowered heirs that
they are will lavishly spend their inheritance of grace to benefit
everyone they meet.

God gives all believers a pledge of inheritance out of the unsurpassed
riches of His infinite grace. We are spiritually rich citizens of
heaven who have nothing to fear in this world. Choose to live boldly
for Christ, and see how abundantly God pours out blessing from the
legacy already set aside for you.

For you are all sons of God through faith
in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as
were baptized into Christ have put on
Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek,
there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female; for you are all
one in Christ Jesus.
( Galatians 3:26-28 *NKJV )

Now you know why the message is addressed to God's
Children this morning! For truly those who love and
worship God are His children; For in Him we live
and move and have our being.' As some of
your own poets have said, 'We are His offspring.
( Acts 17:28 ) Think about that the next time you are
feeling low, or are depressed and worried because of a
problem that you are facing. I'll bet that problem won't
seem so big if you do!

So, as a member of God's Great Family,
never feel alone and think that there is no one to turn too,
For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you
nor forsake you." So we may boldly say: "The
Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can
man do to me?" ( Hebrews 13:5-6 ) Therefore ,
He will always be there to love you, and guide you through any
difficulty!

Now as the Prophet David wrote; You are my rock
and my fortress, for the sake of Your Name lead
and guide me. ( PSALM 31:3 ) So; Trust in Him at
all times, you people; Pour out your heart before
Him; God is a refuge for us. A refuge indeed!
Amen. ( Psalms 62:8 )

*A Time When Promises are Kept*

by Elfrieda Nikkel

"This God – his way is perfect; the promise of the Lord proves true."
Psalm 18:30
The Christmas story is an announcement to the world that God keeps his
promises. Over the years God made a promise to send a Savior and now it was
fulfilled. The first word of promise was given in the Garden of Eden just
after man lost his place of privilege and friendship with God. Rather than
spending a lot of time scolding Adam and Eve, God reached out to help.
Again and again through the centuries he reminded the people that he had
not forgotten this promise. Along with the promise of a Savior, God gives
other promises that are ours to claim. He promises to give strength, to
give wisdom, to guide, to give counsel and to walk with us. Have we
claimed these promises as our own? May the banner over this Christmas
season read, "The promises of the Lord prove true."

*Peace on Earth *
*

*
by John Grant

"Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
Luke 2:14
Out in space two alien forms are speaking with each other. The first
spaceman says, "The dominant life forms on the earth planet have developed
satellite-based weapons." The second alien, who looks exactly like the
first, asks, "Are they an emerging intelligence?" The first spaceman says,
"I don't think so…They have them aimed at themselves."
Now that's a cute little story, but one that ends with more truth than
humor. As we approach that season of the year when people talk about peace
on earth, we soberly note that there is anything but peace on earth. Civil
and international wars and conflicts are being fought all over the globe
and the threat of the unseen enemy of terrorism is ever present.
The root cause of it all is greed and sin, something God sent His Son to
free us from, but before He came, when He came and ever since He came,
people have rejected both Him and His Father. In 1 Samuel (10:19) we read
"You have rejected God…and asked for a king".
As long as people are looking for earthly power (a king) and not heavenly
power (God), nothing will change. As we look around the world, people are
aiming their weapons as one another and even shooing their own, all in the
name of greed, power and international control.
As we enter this yuletide season amidst a fallen world of strife and
conflict, we should be reminded about what Jesus said about peace.
In Matthew He said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called
sons of God" (5:9) and "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and
I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am
gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my
yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (11:28-30).
In John, He said, "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as
the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither
let them be afraid" (14:27) and "I have said these things to you, that in
me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take
heart; I have overcome the world" (16:33).
The prophet Isaiah said, "They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and
their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against
nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Isaiah 2:4). It has yet to
happen, but most assuredly it will. God said so.
When we read or watch the daily press it seems to be all focused on the
strife war and threats of war in the world, but as we celebrate this coming
remembrance of the birth of our Savior, may our focus be not on the world,
but on the manger that held the true agent of peace on earth…… real peace
…….. and eternal peace.
(a thought on life from John Grant )

APPROVED UNTO GOD

Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that
needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of
truth.
2 Timothy 2:15

If you cannot express yourself on any subject, struggle until you
can. If you do not, someone will be the poorer all the, days of his
life. Struggle to re-express some truth of God to your self, and God
will use that expression to some one else. Go through the winepress
of God where the grapes are crushed. You must struggle to get
expression experimentally, then there will come a time when that
expression will become the very wine of strengthening to someone
else; but if you say lazily - "I am not going to struggle to express
this thing for myself, I will borrow what I say," the expression will
not only be of no use to you, but of no use to anyone. Try to state
to yourself what you feel implicitly to be God's truth, and you give
God a chance to pass it on to someone else through you.

Always make a practice of provoking your own mind to think out what
it accepts easily. Our position is not ours until we make it ours by
suffering. The author who benefits you most is not the one who tells
you something you did not know before, but the one who gives
expression to the truth that has been dumbly struggling in you for
utterance.

*Daily Devotional
* Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based
on the book of Proverbs in the Bible.* * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:

Proverbs 19:26-27(KJV):
26 He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that
causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.
27 Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the
words of knowledge.

Proverbs 19:24-25(AMP):
26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son
who causes shame and brings reproach.
27 Cease, my son, to hear instruction only to ignore it and stray from the
words of knowledge. *

*Thoughts for the Day:*

*Great wisdom for young people can be found in the book of **Proverbs. **
Verse* *26* states that a son (or daughter) who *wastes* his father, and
chases away his mother (will not listen to her) will cause the family shame
and reproach. When we look at the dictionary definition of the word
"waste", we can better understand what this means. Quoting from *Webster's
New World Dictionary *the word "waste" means: (1.) to destroy; devastate;
ruin (2.) to wear away; consume gradually; use up (3.) to make weak,
feeble, wear away strength ....(4.) to use up or spend without real need,
gain, or purpose; squander (5.) to fail to take proper advantage of (to *
waste* an opportunity) (6.) (Slang) to kill, usually with violence; esp. to
murder.

An evil child who continually rebels and comes against a good father's
instructions, in time, will begin to wear away his father and mother. Many
parents who are vexed with unruly children become "worn out" in the process
of trying to raise them. Children who do not take advantage of having
godly parents will live to regret it in time. The Bible gives instructions
to children to obey their parents and also admonishes the parent to raise
them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

*Ephesians 6:1-4:
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2 Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;
3 That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in
the nurture and admonition of the Lord.*

These verses contain a promise to children. If children will honor and
obey their parents things will go well for them and they will live a long
life. Children who disobey take the risk of cutting their lives short as
rebellion opens the door for evil things to happen to them. An example
would be when parents tell their child not to smoke, drink alcohol, or take
drugs. If the child then disobeys, the use of these substances will cut
their lives short.

It is shocking in our world today that there are children who even murder
their own parents. This kind of evil is demonic and can come about when
children over a period of time rebel not only against their parents, but
they also resist the rules of society and a hatred sets in their hearts
that leads them to an act of horror of murdering their own parents.

These verses also tell fathers (and mothers) not to provoke their children
to anger. This means we must use wisdom and love when we deal with our
children and not treat them unfairly. It does not mean that they may not
become angry when they are disciplined and spanked; however, their anger
will be short lived when they are disciplined in love. This does not mean
giving children their way in all the things they want to do; however, it
does mean that a parent will not exchange angry shouts with their children
and act as childish as the youngster. As parents, we need God's help to
keep from resorting to angry outbursts where we become out of control.
Uncontrolled anger begats uncontrolled anger.

*Verse 27 *of *Proverbs *also tells young people not to listen to the
instructions of those who would cause them to stray from their parents
instructions. The knowledge of good parents is a blessing, as it prevents
the child from being hurt by evil advice. Young people are told to stay
away from those who would give them knowledge and instruction that is bad.
If children refuse to stay away from those who are hurting them , then the
parents must take the action necessary for breaking up a relationship with
someone who is a bad influence on their children. In doing so this will
prevent the shame and reproach that the devil wants to bring upon a
family. It will also prevent the enemy from hurting our children.

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us instructions in the Bible as
to how we are to help our children. Help us to be good parents. Lord,
when we need to discipline our children, help us to do so in Your love and
not yield to becoming so emotionally upset that we lose our temper and hurt
more than help them. Lord, help us not to shrink from spanking and
disciplining our children when they need it knowing that it will cause them
to cease from rebellion and evil. May our children understand Your ways
and desire to follow You and have a spirit of obedience. Lord, heal any
breaches between parents and their children and cause our families to walk
in Your love. I ask this in the name of Jesus. Amen.** *

Sensing Noel
Can you see what I see?
It's as clear as can be,
See the brightest star glow?
The Bethlehem one we know.
This Christmastime held dear
Harken to what you hear,
Hear the sleigh bells jingle?
Soon will come Kriss Kringle.
Do you smell the evergreen?
Christmas trees can be seen,
Breath deeply the scented air,
Their fragrance is everywhere.
Feel the spirit the heart touch?
'Tis the Noel we love so much,
Feel joy and goodwill abound,
Adoration for all is around.
Soon you will taste the holiday
As tables laden before you lay,
Foods kept for a special treat,
Will be lain to hungrily eat.
'Tis the time of red berries and holly
As we await old St. Nick so jolly
And kisses wait under the mistletoe
Can you feel the love flow?
Christmastide season comes to us
To honor the birth of Baby Jesus
And we know great joy in our hearts
When the sacred season starts.
In a manger filled with new hay
A new baby boy one day lay
And today Jesus is at your side
As we celebrate The Christmastide.

Christmas is such a special time.

Just filled with pleasant thoughts.

The things we did to prepare for Christmas,

And sharing gifts we'd bought.

I remember walking in the forest

To find that perfect Christmas tree.

The fun and excitement we had,

Filled with Christmas glee.

Not just any tree would do,

It had to be just so.

The right height for the room

So all the lights would show.

The tinsel was bright and shiny,

The lights were all aglow;

Gifts all wrapped in Christmas paper,

With pretty shiny bows.

Mom was in the kitchen,

Baking all her special treats;

Each one their special dish,

To make the meal complete.

I still remember the applesauce cake,

The aroma was so sweet.

But the fresh coconut cake,

Was my favorite treat.

There was a fruity Jell-o salad,

With apples, oranges and nuts,

That gave the coconut cake

That special added touch.

We always had goose and dressing,

And giblet gravy, too.

And of course the cranberry sauce,

To leave that out - why, that would never do!

Mom always planned for us,

Each one their favorite dish,

Of course the coconut cake,

Would always be my pick.

At the close of Christmas Day,

We'd gathered round to sing

Songs of gratitude and thankfulness,

To our Provider, Lord and King.

Read | 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

Is there something God has told you to do that seems just too
difficult? You can be sure that if He has called you to carry out His
will, He's going to be faithful to accomplish it through His Spirit
living and working in you. So if you tell Him, "I can't do that,
Lord—what if I fail?" you're really saying, "God doesn't keep His
word." And yet, our total expectation should be in Him—not in our own
energy, ability, or experience.

When you doubt God's trustworthiness, that unbelief becomes a
gap in your spiritual armor, and you can be sure that's exactly where
Satan will attack you. You'll begin to doubt even more about God's
character, such as His goodness—and that distrust will become a heavy
load of baggage you'll needlessly drag through every area of your
life.

You might feel that you do not have enough faith to obey, but
the Lord isn't asking you to have faith in favorable circumstances.
He's asking you to trust that He is who He says He is.

Do you believe that God is a liar? It's really that simple:
either He is truthful or He's not. But if you believe that
faithfulness is His character, then you can do anything He requires.
You'll be strengthened by your dependence on Him—whether a deluge or
trials or a flood of blessing comes.

It's actually when life gets rough and rugged that the sweetness
of God's faithfulness makes itself real in your heart. As you walk
through those storms in complete reliance on His strength, your trust
in His character becomes part of who you are and strengthens from
within.

Rise Above the Temptation to Quit

by Jane Powell

Everyone wants to be a success in life. But, unless
you make a commitment to never quit no matter what, it may never
happen.

The one thing that makes a you successful is
persistence. It's not talent, not ability, nor education. Just plain
old persistence!

Life will always present you with opportunities to
succeed, as well as reasons to quit. Rise above the temptation to quit
and find an incentive not to give in.

Today, make an I'll never quit! commitment to
yourself. Because you can do anything if you try.

TEMPERING OUR TEMPER

A young girl came into the house with a tear in her
pants. Her
mother was exasperated, as this had happened too
many times before.
At her wits end, she said to her daughter, "Now you
go into your
room, take off those pants, and sew up that tear!"
The poor child
had never held needle and thread in her life.

So understandably, a little while later her mother
saw the pants
crumpled on the floor of her daughter's bedroom --
still torn. She
looked around for her daughter. Spying the basement
light on, she
called down the stairs, "Are you down there running
around with your
pants off?"

A big voice boomed up, "No ma'am. I'm reading the gas meter."

Of course, what parent can't relate to her exasperation?

On the other hand, I DO have trouble understanding
the guy in Los
Angeles who was arrested for negligent discharge of
a weapon after
shooting his toilet bowl five times with a handgun
(and yes, this is
true). Why did he assault the commode? He apparently
exploded when
he couldn't extract a hair brush his daughter flushed down.

He might benefit from the advice of one of America's great
presidents, Thomas Jefferson, who cautioned, "When
angry, count to
ten before you speak; if very angry, count to 100."
I think it
applies to discharging weapons, too.

Maybe another technique works better for you. One
husband asked his
wife, "When I get mad at you, you never fight back.
How do you
control your anger?"

She smiled at him. "I clean the toilet bowl." (Uh-oh, toilets
again.)

"How does that help?"

"I use your toothbrush," she said sweetly.

It's not that anger is a bad thing in itself. A good
bit of fire in
the belly may be needed to right the world's wrongs.
But this isn't
about righteous indignation. It's about tempering our temper.

I've seen marriages destroyed, careers derailed and
relationships of
all kinds decimated by uncontrolled rage. It's no
wonder all of the
world's great religions have something to say about
it. To name a
few, the Buddha said, "You will not be punished for
your anger, you
will be punished by your anger." In the Koran we
find, "He is not
strong and powerful who throws people down, but he
is strong who
withholds himself from anger." And in Christian
scripture Jesus
instructs, "If someone strikes you on the right
cheek, turn to him
the other also."

You get the idea.

I like the motto Mahatma Gandhi hung on his wall at Sevagram:

"When you are in the right,
You can afford to keep your temper;
When you are in the wrong,
You can't afford to lose it."

I'm sure I could never say it better.

Reason is not everything

Make good and effective use of reason, but don't let
it be the only thing that informs you. Some of the most beautiful and
valuable aspects of life have little basis in reason.

Love does not adhere to reason, and yet it is real.
People regularly act on faith, wholly apart from reason, and create
great value in doing so.

You know much more than you can prove. Let your
amazing ability to reason move you forward, but don't let it put
limits on how far you can go.

Pay attention to the reasons, and pay attention also
to how you feel. You are more than merely a set of logically
determined options.

Even when every reason argues against it, hope is
never lost. For the power of hope, the power of authentic desire and
the power of dreams cannot be calculated or limited by reason.

There is a reason for everything and yet reason
itself is not everything. Go joyfully forward, now and always, whether
there is reason to or not.

Genuine Strength

Ephesians 6:10-12: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty
power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand
against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and
blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in
the heavenly realms.

Never doubt that there is a very real spiritual conflict going on. Be
strong for that conflict. Be prepared to take your stand. The devil
and the powers of the dark are scheming against us, but we can be
powerful in the Lord.

Coffee Break

"Who's Your Friend?"

"But Amnon had a friend, whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah
David's brother: and Jonadab was a very subtil man." 2 Samuel 13:3

Let me give you a little background about this verse. Amnon was King
David's oldest son. He fell in love with his half sister Tamar. The
Bible records that he wanted her so badly that it made him ill because
he thought it was impossible for him to ever be with her. So he made
no attempts toward her, but just grew sicker and sicker because of his
longing for her.

But Amnon had a "friend" so all that was about to change. This friend
encouraged him to pursue his desire and even devised a plan to fulfill
it. The end of the story was that Amnon finally fulfilled his desire
to be with his sister by raping her. Although he wanted her badly he
did not make any advance to cause it to happen until his "friend"
showed him how to get what he wanted.

Friendship is a wonderful blessing, or it can be a curse if you don't
choose your friends wisely. The Bible warns us that evil companions
corrupt good morals. This was certainly the case with Amnon's
"friend". It was only at the advice and prompting of his friend that
he filled his lust toward his sister by raping her. Up until that
point he made no advances toward her and was innocent of that evil.

How many of us have gotten into trouble because we listened to a
"friend's advice". This is why it is so important that you choose
your friends wisely. The right kind of friends will encourage you to
do the right thing. Many people have been led astray by their
"friend". This is one of the first things we encourage those who are
getting out of the recovery center to do-- break ties with those
"friends" that you did drugs with- they will only bring you back down
into that pit with them. This is why parents are concerned about
their children's friendships.

Choosing your friends wisely is so important. A good friend has your
best interest at heart. They will help you make the wisest choice and
weigh the consequences of making the wrong choice- not just help you
figure out how to get what you want. Ungodly friends will lead you in
the wrong direction. It may have seemed like Jonadab had his friend's
best interest at heart, but he wound up doing him more harm in the
end-- Amnon hated Tamar after he raped her instead of loving her, and
his act against her eventually led to his death.

Think about your friendships. Do you have any that you should not
have? Are your friends building you up or pulling you down? Are they
encouraging you to do the right thing, or the wrong thing? Are they
helping you get closer to the Lord and obeying His commands, or do
they pull you further away from Him and into sin?

Have a great day. Friendship is a wonderful blessing, or it can be a
curse if you don't choose your friends wisely.

Grace upon Grace
John 1:1--17
"From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing
after another." (v. 16)
The Amplified Bible translates today's verse thus: "For out of His
fullness (abundance) we all received -- all had a share and we were
all supplied with -- one grace after another and spiritual blessing
upon spiritual blessing, and even favor upon favor and gift [heaped]
upon gift." I love the phrase "one grace after another." The thought
contained in the original text is of grace succeeding grace. Our
capacity to receive grace at any level depends on our use of it at the
lowest level. Refuse God's grace at one level of your life and you
make it difficult to receive it at another level. We must use the
present proffered grace to be granted the grace which succeeds it. One
preacher said: "I remember when I sat for my first scholarship. I
recall going to my professor and saying: 'What will I do when I have
used the paper up?' He laughed. 'You needn't worry about that,' he
said. 'When you have used all you have, just ask for more.' Much
relieved I added:
'Will he give me all I want?' 'No,' replied the professor, 'but he
will give you all you can use.'" God is eager to give His grace to
every one of us, and there is so much of it. Grace is flowing like a
river Millions there have been supplied ... But it mustn't be wasted.
You can have all you are able to use, but to have more you must use
what you have. How good are you at using God's grace?

Prayer:
My Father and my God, show me how to use Your grace -- really use it.
Help me to throw myself on You, to be less self-reliant and more
God-reliant. I need to understand this even more, dear Lord. Please
help me. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

One Day at a Time

LORD, I have called daily upon You; I have stretched out my hands to You.
Psalm 88:9

Recommended Reading
Philippians 4:6-9
Suppose you have a long glass tube the exact diameter of a marble, lying on
its side, with openings at both ends. Presently, the tube contains exactly
100 black marbles filling the tube in single file from one end to the
other. Your goal is to fill the tube with 100 white marbles, but you can
remove only one black marble per day. How many days will it take to fill
the tube with white marbles? Obviously, 100 days. As you push one new white
marble in one end of the tube each day, a black marble will fall out of the
tube on the opposite end. By the one-hundredth day--in with a white marble,
out with a black--the tube will be full of white marbles.

Can you do the same with spiritual growth? Can your mind--the battlefield
in spiritual warfare--be filled more and more with godly thoughts, driving
out ungodly thoughts of fear, worry, and anxiety? Yes, but it won't happen
overnight. Following Paul's admonition in Philippians 4:8-9 is a good place
to begin by meditating daily on what is noble, just, pure, lovely, good,
virtuous, and praiseworthy.

The more we fill our heart and mind with godly prayer and meditation, the
less room there will be for worry.

Spending Our Inheritance
Ephesians 1:11-22
The word "inheritance" usually brings to mind the money and real estate
handed down from one generation to another. But God has an even greater
legacy to share with His children—one that they are given the moment they
enter His family.
Galatians 4:7 tells us that believers are God's heirs. First among our
priceless treasures is a living hope in Jesus Christ that cannot be taken
away (1 Peter 1:3). What's more, He pledged to supply our needs according
to His riches (Phil 4:19). In other words, we already have all that we need
for an abundant and victorious life.
However, some folks get stuck in spiritual poverty because they refuse to
view themselves as adopted children. Failing to tap into their inheritance,
they're like a man who sees himself as a poor, sinful creature: he wanders
through this big angry world hoping to hold on to his meager scrap of faith
until he's lucky enough to die and go to heaven. Of course that man misses
the blessings available in this life, because he's not looking for them.
How differently people see themselves when they look through the eyes of
Jesus. Christians who live like the beloved, empowered heirs that they are
will lavishly spend their inheritance of grace to benefit everyone they
meet.
God gives all believers a pledge of inheritance out of the unsurpassed
riches of His infinite grace. We are spiritually rich citizens of heaven
who have nothing to fear in this world. Choose to live boldly for Christ,
and see how abundantly God pours out blessing from the legacy already set
aside for you.

Morning

Make his praise glorious.

This people have I formed for myself; they shall shew forth my praise.--I
will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against
me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and
whereby they have transgressed against me. And it shall be to me a name of
joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth.--By him
therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is,
the fruit of [our] lips giving thanks to his name.

I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify
thy name for evermore. For great [is] thy mercy toward me: and thou hast
delivered my soul from the lowest hell. --Who [is] like unto thee, O LORD,
. . . glorious in holiness, fearful [in] praises, doing wonders?--I will
praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with
thanksgiving.--They sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song
of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous [are] thy works, Lord God
Almighty.

We ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving

Job answered the LORD, and said, Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer
thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.--The LORD said unto Satan, Hast
thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth,
a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive
me.--David . . . to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found

Morning

"They go from strength to strength."-Psalm 84:7

They go from strength to strength. There are various renderings of these
words, but all of them contain the idea of progress.

Our own good translation of the authorized version is enough for us this
morning. "They go from strength to strength." That is, they grow stronger
and stronger. Usually, if we are walking, we go from strength to weakness;
we start fresh and in good order for our journey, but by-and-by the road is
rough, and the sun is hot, we sit down by the wayside, and then again
painfully pursue our weary way. But the Christian pilgrim having obtained
fresh supplies of grace, is as vigorous after years of toilsome travel and
struggle as when he first set out. He may not be quite so elate and
buoyant, nor perhaps quite so hot and hasty in his zeal as he once was, but
he is much stronger in all that constitutes real power, and travels, if
more slowly, far more surely. Some gray-haired veterans have been as firm
in their grasp of truth, and as zealous in diffusing it, as they were in
their younger days; but, alas, it must be confessed it is often otherwise,
for the love of many waxes cold an!
d iniquity abounds, but this is their own sin and not the fault of the
promise which still holds good: "The youths shall faint and be weary, and
the young men shall utterly fall, but they that wait upon the Lord shall
renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles, they shall
run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint." Fretful spirits
sit down and trouble themselves about the future. "Alas!" say they, "we go
from affliction to affliction." Very true, O thou of little faith, but then
thou goest from strength to strength also. Thou shalt never find a bundle
of affliction which has not bound up in the midst of it sufficient grace.
God will give the strength of ripe manhood with the burden allotted to
full-grown shoulders.

Evening

"I am crucified with Christ."-Galatians 2:20

The Lord Jesus Christ acted in what He did as a great public representative
person, and His dying upon the cross was the virtual dying of all His
people. Then all His saints rendered unto justice what was due, and made an
expiation to divine vengeance for all their sins. The apostle of the
Gentiles delighted to think that as one of Christ's chosen people, he died
upon the cross in Christ. He did more than believe this doctrinally, he
accepted it confidently, resting his hope upon it. He believed that by
virtue of Christ's death, he had satisfied divine justice, and found
reconciliation with God. Beloved, what a blessed thing it is when the soul
can, as it were, stretch itself upon the cross of Christ, and feel, "I am
dead; the law has slain me, and I am therefore free from its power, because
in my Surety I have borne the curse, and in the person of my Substitute the
whole that the law could do, by way of condemnation, has been executed upon
me, for I am crucified with Christ!
."
But Paul meant even more than this. He not only believed in Christ's death,
and trusted in it, but he actually felt its power in himself in causing the
crucifixion of his old corrupt nature. When he saw the pleasures of sin, he
said, "I cannot enjoy these: I am dead to them." Such is the experience of
every true Christian. Having received Christ, he is to this world as one
who is utterly dead. Yet, while conscious of death to the world, he can, at
the same time, exclaim with the apostle, "Nevertheless I live." He is fully
alive unto God. The Christian's life is a matchless riddle. No worldling
can comprehend it; even the believer himself cannot understand it. Dead,
yet alive! crucified with Christ, and yet at the same time risen with
Christ in newness of life! Union with the suffering, bleeding Saviour, and
death to the world and sin, are soul-cheering things. O for more enjoyment
of them!

The blessings that come with being thankful
December 15, 2011
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you
were called in one body. And be thankful.
Colossians 3:15
I heard about two young city slickers who were driving through a small
town out in East Texas. They stopped at a little café for a bite to
eat, and they noticed an old farmer bowing his head and giving thanks
for his food.
Now, this wasn't something they were used to seeing in the city. So
they walked over to that old man with a little smirk on their faces
and said, "Sir, does everybody around here pray like that before they
eat?" Without even looking up at the two, the old man said, "Nope. The
hogs don't."
As believers in Christ, expressing your thankfulness toward God for
the blessings in your life is of the upmost importance. In fact, as
you read today's passage, you'll see that there is a direct
correlation between letting Christ rule in your hearts and being
thankful for His blessings!
Now, I'm not saying you have to bow your head and close your eyes
every time you chew a piece of gum. But take some time each day to
acknowledge God's blessings, and thank Him for what He's given you.
When you do that, you'll begin to see just how blessed you are and
just how good God is!

THANKFULNESS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE CHRISTIAN
LIFE. SO SPEND SOME TIME EACH DAY ACKNOWLEDGING GOD'S BLESSINGS AND
EXPRESSING YOUR GRATEFULNESS TO HIM.

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

December 15
World Concord

And they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears
into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war any more. (Isaiah 2:4)
Oh, that these happy times were come! At present the nations are
heavily armed and are inventing weapons more and more terrible, as if
the chief end of man could only be answered by destroying myriads of
his fellows. Yet peace will prevail one day; yes, and so prevail that
the instruments of destruction shall be beaten into other shapes and
used for better purposes.
How will this come about? By trade? By civilization? By arbitration?
We do not believe it. Past experience forbids our trusting to means so
feeble. Peace will be established only by the reign of the Prince of
Peace. He must teach the people by His Spirit, renew their hearts by
His grace, and reign over them by His supreme power, and then will
they cease to wound and kill. Man is a monster when once his blood is
up, and only the Lord Jesus can turn this lion into a lamb. By
changing man's heart, his bloodthirsty passions are removed. Let every
reader of this book of promises offer special prayer today to the Lord
and Giver of Peace that He would speedily put an end to war and
establish concord over the whole world.

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

DAILY-E-VOTIONAL
BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART
Pastor Cecil A. Thompson
December 15, 2011

ALL DONE!
John 17:3-5
Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and
Jesus Christ, whom You have sent. I have brought You glory on earth by
finishing the work You gave Me to do. And now, Father, glorify Me in
Your presence with the glory I had with You before the world began.

During all my school days (first grade through graduate school) I
dreaded taking tests. As I write this, I am sure that I can hear a
chorus of "amen's." Tests are one of the terrors students encounter.
One of my good friends is a medical doctor and shared with me the
ordeal leading up to his boards. He had studied all through the night
into the early morning when he heard the sounds of the trash being
picked up. Looking out the window my friend saw the garbage man and
immediately thought to himself how lucky that man was.

More than one time as I completed a test I would think to myself, "I'm
done." I might just as well have added, "I'm all done for!" Anyway
there was a feeling of doing what I could and the results would be
determined by the teacher who would be grading the test.

In today's Scripture Jesus is praying earnestly to the Heavenly
Father. The prayer is a fantastic picture of His completed work here
on earth. Jesus knew that He would soon die on the cross for the sins
of the world. His death on the cross would pronounce victory over
Satan and life to all who would receive Him as their personal Savior
and Lord.

There is nothing we can do to earn our own salvation. It is only by
His shed blood that we are saved. After we have been born again we can
learn to know Him better and grow as we do His will for our lives.[but
how does one become born again?] He has done it all for us.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely
and be a blessing!

Striking Imagery

Joel 1-3, Revelation 5
Key Verse: Revelation 5:6
John's vision of the heavenly throne room is one of the most moving
worship scenes in the Bible, one filled with rich and striking imagery
that joins Old and New Testament truth in a single person, Jesus
Christ. He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David and
the Lamb of God, the only One worthy to open the scroll and to loose
its seven seals.
Allow for a moment your mind to dwell on this scene. John "wept and
wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll" (v.
4). Then he heard that the Lion of the tribe of Judah had "triumphed"
and was able to open the scroll (v. 5). He turned to see the Lion and
saw the Lamb. Old and New Testament converge and contain a striking
imagery not seen in our English translations.
The Lamb is described as looking "as if it had been slain" (v. 6).
That phrase is a translation of a Greek word that means "with its
throat cut." Our English versions emphasize that the marks of death
are visible, but the original language communicates the picture of a
sacrifice. How else would a lamb have been sacrificed? Its throat
would have been cut.
Yet notice that the Lamb is standing. He is not dead, even though slain.
Jesus is the Lamb of God. He died for our sins, yet He lives! And He
alone is worthy "'to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!'" (v. 12).
We prefer a nicer image of the death of Christ to this bloody one. Yet
the truth is that Jesus died a cruel death for us. Meditate on this
truth today. Thank God for the Lamb, the One who was slain.

A Penetrating Prayer

Read Psalm 139:19-24
There is no higher occupation than the contemplation and the worship
of God. David says, "My God knows everything; I can't fool Him. My God
is everywhere; I can't flee from Him. My God can do anything; I can't
fight Him. What should I do?" We find his answer in verses 23 and 24.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties;
and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way
everlasting." That's one of the most penetrating prayers found in the
Bible.
If we can't fool God, flee from Him or fight Him, the only thing for
us to do is surrender to Him--in awe, reverence and worship. Notice
the psalmist's request: "Search me, O God, and know my heart." God
knows our hearts. He knows us from top to bottom, inside out. But we
don't know our own hearts. Jeremiah said, "The heart is deceitful
above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jer.
17:9). Only God can know it. The Hebrew word for search used in verse
23 means to dig in a mine and find ore. "Search me, O God; I am like a
mine. I am deep, but dig out the potential that is in me. Dig out all
the treasure you have put into me, even before I was born." It also
means to explore a land. How broad and wide are the horizons of
possibility in life. "Search me, O God; bring out of me all that is
there for your glory."
Then David says, "Try me, and know my anxieties." Try means to test
metal in a furnace. That's why we suffer sometimes. "See if there is
any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (v. 24).
Here, then, are three penetrating requests: search me, try me and lead
me. Are you asking God to lead you in His will today? If you do, He
will bring out of the mine of your life treasures that will glorify
His name.

* * *
Can you echo David's prayer? If not, perhaps you need to surrender to
God's will or ask Him to forgive some sin in your life. Remember, He
knows you intimately. Ask Him for the grace to stand up to His
scrutiny.

Spirituality Demands Honesty
Isaiah 6:1-8
The Bible has a great deal to say about the conscience. Much is said
to believers with regard to the conscience. For example, Paul wrote in
Romans 9:1: "1 say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also
bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost."
The apostle connected his conscience and the Holy Spirit in such a way
as to show that the Holy Spirit works with the believer's conscience
to keep it clear, to keep it functioning as it should.
One of God's attributes is His holiness. He hates--and will eventually
destroy--evil, but He loves good. A person's conscience reflects God's
attitude in this. It condemns sin and approves what is right.
God created people with a conscience to hate sin and to love right.
The conscience condemns sin and approves of what pleases God. So
through the conscience God still works in people.
The believer who wants to be filled, or controlled, by the Holy Spirit
must allow God to instruct and control his conscience. Therefore,
since God the Holy Spirit works through the conscience, it must be
trained by the Word of God to be sensitive to the Spirit's dealing.
A clear conscience will characterize a spiritual person. We need an
alert conscience, as Paul said, "My conscience also bearing me witness
in the Holy Ghost" (Rom. 9:1).
"Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee"
(Ps. 119:11).

1 Kings 8:10-11
And it came to pass, when the priests came out of the holy place, that
the cloud filled the house of the Lord, so that the priests could not
continue ministering because of the cloud; for the glory of the Lord
filled the house of the Lord.
Be Filled
There are many occasions in life where it's essential that some things
be absolutely full. If you're headed out for a long trip, for example,
the gas tank needs to be filled. A half of a tank just won't do. Or
when the doctor writes a prescription for antibiotics for you, he
always tells you to take all the pills, even after you feel better.
Take the full dose; a partial dose won't insure that you'll get
better.
When Solomon and the people of Israel dedicated the temple, it was
important for God to make His presence known in complete fullness. It
was God's way of putting His stamp of approval both on Solomon and on
the structure he built for the Lord's glory. An anemic demonstration
of God's presence would not be sufficient. So God chose to fill the
temple with the cloud of His glory until the priests had to halt
temporarily the offering of sacrifices. His presence was so
overwhelming that those who served Him had to vacate the premises.
A Christian needs to experience this same filling as well. The Lord's
glory (or character) needs to so fill our lives that we overflow with
God's goodness, purity and all the other traits that make up who He
is. That's why the apostle Paul wrote, "And do not be drunk with wine,
in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit" (Eph. 5:18).
Not just once, as when the temple was dedicated, but continually be
filled. And not just a little bit, but be filled all the way, right to
the brim, until the Spirit of God spills out from you.
Ask God to fill you with His glory through the Holy Spirit (Luke
11:13). Don't be satisfied with a nominal, lukewarm Christianity. Pray
that God's character will so fill you that it will flow out to
everyone around you.
He who is full of God can never be full of himself.
