The Manger of My Heart
Renee Swope
"Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will
conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." Isaiah
7:14 (NIV)
As the days get shorter in December, it seems the time I spend with
God does too. I long for His presence. I know I need His perspective
and peace. But as I prepare for the holidays, my heart can get so
focused on planning and buying gifts that I forget to unwrap the most
important gift—the gift of Immanuel—God with us.
In all the hustle and bustle, it's easy to fill our heart with
everything but Him, and miss the calm hush His presence brings. I felt
an unusual void around the holidays several years ago, and wrote this
Christmas prayer to help me keep my heart where it needs to be. I
display it where I'll see it often - to remind me of what matters
most.
The Manger of My Heart
This Christmas, Lord, come to the manger of my heart.
Fill me with Your presence from the very start.
As I prepare for the holidays and gifts to be given,
Remind me of the gift You gave when You sent Your Son from Heaven.
The first Christmas gift, it was the greatest gift ever.
You came as a baby born in a manger.
Wrapped like the gifts I find under my tree,
Waiting to be opened, to reveal Your love to me.
Restore to me the wonder that came with Jesus' birth,
when He left the riches of Heaven and wrapped Himself in rags of
earth.
Immanuel, God with us, Your presence came that night.
And angels announced, "Into your darkness, God brings His Light."
"Do not be afraid," they said, to shepherds in the field.
Speak to my heart today, Lord, and help me to yield.
Make me like those shepherd boys, obedient to Your call.
Setting distractions and worries aside, to You I surrender them all.
Surround me with Your presence, Lord, I long to hear Your voice.
Clear my mind of countless concerns and all the holiday noise.
Slow me down this Christmas, let me not be in a rush.
In the midst of parties and planning, I want to feel Your hush.
This Christmas, Jesus, come to the manger of my heart.
Invade my soul like Bethlehem, bringing peace to every part.
Dwell within and around me, as I unwrap Your presence each day.
Keep me close to You, Lord. It's in Your wonderful Name I pray.
Thousands of years ago God gave us the gift of His one and only Son,
born in a humble manger. Making room in our hearts for Jesus through
prayer during this busy season is a gift we give to Him, and
ourselves. Right now, let's quiet our racing thoughts and take a
moment to enjoy the hush of Immanuel—God with us. His presence in our
lives is a gift we can open every day of the year.
Dear Lord, I'm so thankful for the gift of Jesus, Immanuel, my God
with me. Help me be still when I feel frazzled and remember You are
God. I want to make room for You in the manger of my heart this
Christmas and unwrap Your presence each day. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord,
how often shall my brother sin against
me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?"
Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up
to seven times, but up to seventy times
seven.
( Matthew 18:21-22 *NKJV )
Peter asked this question because the Rabbis' taught that one should
only forgive another three times. That was based on what was written
in the Book of Amos, Verses 1:3,6,9,11,13 & 2:1,4,6.
Now Peter was being generous when asking Jesus about
seven times, however Our Savior answered seventy times seven, meaning
that we should not even keep track of how many times we forgive
others.
Further Our Savior taught us that we must forgive others if we are to
receive forgiveness from God! For Jesus also stated; "If you forgive
men their trespasses, your Heavenly
Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their
trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
( Matthew 6:14-15 )
After all we are not to avenge or try to repay others for what
they have done. For we know Him who said,
"Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
And again, "The Lord will judge His people."
( Hebrews 10:30 )
Therefore; Bear with one another, and forgiving
one another, if anyone has a complaint against
another; even as Christ forgave you, so you
also must do Amen. ( Colossians 3:13 )

The LORD spoke to Manasseh and to his people, but they paid no
attention.
2 Chronicles 33:10
One day several years ago, an older lady came to me and said, "Pastor,
I get up at 4:30 every morning to pray." Now, I know this woman, and
she wasn't bragging. As a matter of fact, she even admitted next, "But
I don't listen to God enough. I do all the talking!"
That almost brought a tear to my eye. Here's a lady who knows that
prayer makes the difference. But most importantly, she knows how
necessary it is to not just talk to God, but to listen to what He has
to say. And really, I think that's a trap that so many Christians fall
into today… they like to talk, but completely forget to listen.
You see, it's one thing to bring your requests and petitions to the
Lord, asking for His favor and blessings in your life. And there's
nothing wrong with that at all! But it's another thing altogether to
open yourself up to Him and be willing to hear when He talks back!
So when you pray, spend some time in quietness and listen to what God
is saying back. Ask Him to speak to you in those moments, and be
willing to hear Him even if it might change how you think. Once prayer
becomes more about aligning yourself with God's will, you'll open up a
whole new line of communication with Him!
PRAYER IS A TWO-WAY LINE OF COMMUNICATION WITH GOD. SO WHEN YOU PRAY,
ASK GOD TO SPEAK TO YOU AND SPEND SOME TIME LISTENING TO WHAT HE HAS
TO SAY!

Coffee Break
"Ignorance Equals Concern"
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them
which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no
hope." 1 Thessalonians 4:13
It is always our ignorance that gives us cause for concern. When we
are concerned about a matter, it is usually because we are ignorant of
the details, outcome or results concerning the matter. If I have
understanding and knowledge of the matter I am less concerned. As in
the verse above. These believers at Thessalonica were concerned about
their brothers and sisters in the Lord who had already died as to what
would become of them at the resurrection. The apostle set their minds
at ease with the truth of God's word concerning this matter.
We don't have to stay in a state of confusion and concern because of
ignorance. God's word gives us clarity, enlightenment and
understanding- and along with that comes hope. If you are concerned
about a matter, if you aren't sure about what is going on, then go to
God's word, go to Him in prayer, seek Him. He will enlighten the eyes
of your understanding. He will give you revelation and insight. He
will guide you, calm your fears, and clarify your concerns. After
all, He doesn't want us to be anxious, worried or overly concerned.
And He doesn't want us in ignorance. He wants us to know the truth
because when we do, the truth will set us free-- free from worry and
anxiety.
Have a great day. Ignorance often causes us to worry and be anxious,
but the knowledge of the truth gives clarity and peace.

Contagious Joy
1 John 1:1-4
Jesus calls us to be His "witnesses." When some Christians hear this
word, they worry that they need exceptional skill or charisma in order
to share the good news with others. Yet to witness is not to merely
speak of the "plan of salvation" to someone. The word literally means
to see, hear, or know by personal presence and perception; to testify;
bear witness to; give or afford evidence of. When John wrote that he
was sharing what he had experienced first-hand, he was saying, "I am
full of joy because of the experience of knowing Jesus, and I want to
invite you to share in that joy!"
When you're in love with someone, you are excited about the
relationship and time spent together. Likewise, when you're in love
with Jesus, you can't keep to yourself the joy that comes from knowing
Him—it just spills over, bearing witness and strengthening other
believers. In fact, as you give testimony of who God is and how He's
working in your life, it makes no difference whether you speak quietly
or with great exuberance: in their spirit, Christians will pick up on
the deep, genuine gladness in your heart that goes beyond natural
happiness. And people who don't yet know the Lord will find themselves
hungering for the relationship you have. In that way, they will be
drawn to His Spirit in you.
Witnessing is not a matter of eloquence or talent. It's an overflow of
the personal relationship with Jesus Christ that is conforming you to
His image. As you allow the Holy Spirit to increasingly express His
life and power through you, contagious joy will be "fruit" of His
indwelling presence.

Lend Me Your Hope
Romans 15:13
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that
you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
Lend me your hope for awhile, I seem to have mislaid mine.
Lost and hopeless feelings accompany me daily, pain and confusion are my
companions.
I know not where to turn; looking ahead to future times does not bring
forth images of renewed hope.
I see troubled times, pain-filled days, and more tragedy.
Lend me your hope for awhile, I seem to have mislaid mine.
Hold my hand and hug me; listen to all my ramblings, recovery seems so far
distant.
The road to healing seems like a long and lonely one.
Lend me your hope for awhile, I seem to have mislaid mine.
Stand by me, offer me your presence, your heart and your love.
Acknowledge my pain, it is so real and ever present.
I am overwhelmed with sad and conflicting thoughts.
Lend me your hope for awhile; a time will come when I will heal, and I will
share my renewal, hope, and love with others (adapted from the poem "Lend
Me Your Hope," author unknown).
The apostle Paul gives us the biblical basis for our comfort and hope:
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
mercies and God of all comfort; who comforts us in all our affliction so
that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the
comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For just as the
sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant
through Christ" (2 Corinthians 1:3-5).
Prayer: I praise You for hope, Lord. Help me be a source of hope in all my
relationships and circumstances today.

Read Hebrews 8 – 10
Highlights:
Jesus is seated with highest honor — at the right hand of God (Heb. 8:1-2).
Jesus Christ is the Mediator of a better Covenant, which was established
upon better promises (8:6). For this is the Covenant that I will make . . .
I will put My Laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts (8:10).
The just shall live by faith (10:38).
The Old Testament's God-ordained Aaronic priesthood, animal sacrifices, and
Temple ceremonies were all symbolic of Christ and were fulfilled in Him.
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer
sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much
more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the Living God (Heb. 9:13-14)? He was the One True Sacrifice and is the One
Eternal High Priest.
God required the Old Testament Israelites to make sacrifices and offerings
for sin. But no sacrifice or offering could truly satisfy God or restore
fellowship between God and man because they were only temporary coverings
for sin. These sacrifices and offerings were only symbolic of Christ who
was to come. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the Book it is
written of Me,) to do Thy will, O God. Above when He said, Sacrifice and
offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin Thou wouldest not,
neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the Law; Then said He,
Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that He may
establish the second (10:7-9).
Christ's words, Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God, expressed His willingness
to do everything necessary to carry out the plan of God to redeem lost
mankind. For by one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are
sanctified. . . . This is the Covenant that I will make with them after
those days, saith the Lord, I will put My Laws into their hearts, and in
their minds will I write them (10:14,16).
When we are living to please our Lord, we will enjoy the peace of God,
which passeth all understanding (Phil. 4:7) — regardless of circumstances.
We praise the Lord for the privilege of obeying Him with all our hearts!
Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for He is
faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto
love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together,
as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more,
as ye see the day approaching (Heb. 10:23-25).
Thought for Today:
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus (II
Tim. 2:1).

1 John 1
If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with God.
INSIGHT
The truth about our sin is a difficult thing to keep balanced in our minds.
On the one hand, we know we should not sin; it is wrong. We should never
take sinning lightly. On the other hand, we all sin; it is unavoidable.
John writes: "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves" (v. 8).
Therefore, God had to make provision for us to be in fellowship with Him.
If we confess our sins, He will forgive us. When we sin, we can accept
God's forgiveness and restoration to fellowship. We need not berate
ourselves endlessly or do a form of penance. Only the blood of Christ can
pay for our sins. And only confession can bring restoration to fellowship
with God.
PRAYER
The Lord forgives and restores us to fellowship, and in fellowship we can
praise Him:
Praise the Lord!
I will praise the Lord with my whole heart,
In the assembly of the upright and in the congregation. . . .
His work is honorable and glorious,
And His righteousness endures forever. . . .
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
A good understanding have all those who do His commandments.
His praise endures forever (Psalm 111:1, 3, 10).
Pause for praise and thanksgiving. Pray this confession to the Lord as you
seek to keep your life free from sin:
Who can understand his errors?
Cleanse me from secret faults.
Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.
Then I shall be blameless,
And I shall be innocent of great transgression (Psalm 19:12-13).
Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this
affirmation to the Lord:
To me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21).
As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:
passion for moral excellence,
Christian educational institutions,
whatever else is on your heart.
Finally, offer this closing prayer to the Lord:
Be of good courage,
And He shall strengthen your heart,
All you who hope in the Lord (Psalm 31:24).

Forgiving Those Who Judge Your
"After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD made him prosperous again
and gave him twice as much as he had before" (Job 42:10).
Have you ever been wrongly judged? Have you ever had people assume there
was sin in your life because of the troubles you may have experienced? Or
perhaps they judged your motives as wrong. What if the people judging you
were your closest friends?
This was exactly what happened in the life of Job. His friends did not
understand how a godly person could ever go through his degree of adversity
his unless God was judging him for his sin. However, his friends were wrong
and God intervened. "I am angry with you and your two friends, because you
have not spoken of me what is right, as my servant Job has," said God to
Job's three friends.
Nothing has really changed after thousands of years. I recall going through
a seven year "Job" experience. Friends in the marketplace could not
understand why I would experience such calamity unless I had made poor
choices. Those in the Church often wrongly equated trouble with sin.
Sometimes this can be true, but often trouble is simply a consequence of a
call on one's life such as Joseph and the apostle Paul experienced.
Joseph was required to forgive his brothers. Jesus was required to forgive
Judas and the disciples for betrayal. You and I are required to forgive
those who wrongfully judge us.
This forgiveness is often THE most important step in gaining restoration in
our own lives. The scripture above reveals that it was not until Job prayed
for his friends that he was restored in the things he had lost.
Is there someone in your life you need to forgive? It may be the missing
piece of your puzzle for restoration.

I Want a Daddy
Sharon Jaynes
Today's Truth
I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters (2
Corinthians 6:18 emphasis added, NIV).
Friend to Friend
Several years ago, my friend Gayle learned a wonderful lesson from her
pint-size granddaughter. Carlie was sitting in the back seat of Gayle's car
with her little best friend. Carlie and this little friend were born on
the same day, and their moms were in hospital rooms right beside each
other. Not only that, the two girls lived in the same apartment complex.
One difference was that Carlie's friend never knew her father. Her mom had
boyfriends that came and went through the years, but never a real dad.
When Gayle kept Carlie on the weekends, sometimes her best friend came
along. That meant that on Sunday's when Gayle and her granddaughter went to
church, Carlie's little friend went along, too.
One day, Gayle had both girls in the back seat when she was running an
errand. They were about five-years-old at the time. And out of the blue,
Carlie's little friend said, "I wish I had a daddy like you have a daddy."
And Carlie replied, "Oh you do have a daddy."
"No I don't. I want a daddy like you have a daddy. I wish I had a daddy."
"But you do have a daddy," Carlie answered back. "We all have a daddy. God
is our daddy. He's everybody's daddy."
Gayle looked in her rearview mirror and saw Carlie's friend hold up her
hands in exasperation. "Why has nobody ever told me this?"
How precious! Listen. I have a daddy. You have a daddy. God is your
Father and He loves you more than you could ever know. Today, my prayer is
that you'll know just how much your Heavenly Father loves you! He's crazy
about you and excited to spend this time with you. Trust God! He's got so
much to share with you.
Let's Pray
Dear Abba Father, I am trusting You today! I am so thankful that You are
my heavenly Father who loves me unconditionally, cares for me unceasingly,
and provides for me unreservedly.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

~A MERRY HEART~
"A merry heart doeth good as a medicine....."
---Proverbs 17: 22
* * * * * * * *
Henry Ward Beecher said, "Mirth is God's medicine. Everybody ought to
bathe in it.
Grim care, sadness, anxiety—all this rust of life—ought to be scoured off
by the oil of mirth."
This is so true. God has the best cure for all of life's ills. His joy is
our strength and a merry heart
does one good, like a medicine. Whatever the problem may be, God has a
solution.
Mirth has been defined as that which causes merriment. When in Christ, we
have the joy
of the Lord within our hearts. Regardless of the circumstances within us,
we can be secure
in the one in whom we abide.
Have you ever seen Christians who seem to have no joy or happiness in their
lives?
The Lord will restore unto them the "joy of their salvation" when they pray
as David
the Psalmist, and seek the Lord's face. Life is not always a bed of roses
and may
have many thorns. However, we know that Jesus is as the Rose of Sharon
among all
the thorns of this life. He is the "sweet fragrance" of God who gives us
true joy
as only He can do. If one ever comes to the place where they feel Jesus
is all
they have, they will find Jesus is all they ever need.
As we draw nigh unto the Lord, He promises to draw nigh unto us. There are
people
who feel they have something missing in their lives. The solution is to go
back to the
Father, back home where they belong. God's great love will roll the
clouds of darkness
away that souls may see the light of day. Jesus is the light that shines
brighter unto
the perfect day. May His love and joy fill hearts today and give new hope
and purpose.
With Christ in our lives, everything will be alright. Remember, God gives
His children
a merry heart, which is the best medicine of all. In Him, we find true
strength, joy, peace
and love. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
Blessings In Christ,

VERSE:
I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with
thanksgiving. This will please the LORD more than an ox, more than
a bull with its horns and hoofs. The poor will see and be glad --
you who seek God, may your hearts live!
-- Psalm 69:30-32
THOUGHT:
Our praise should not only please God, it should also produce
joy and gladness in the streets among the poor! Why? Because praise
invites us to not only applaud God for what he does, but to also
join him in partnership as he does it. God's generosity, which
evokes our praise, should stir our generosity, which in turn
blesses others and leads them to praise God!
PRAYER:
Holy God, Almighty and majestic King, you are worthy of all
honor and praise. You have done wonderful and mighty things. You
have poured out your blessings upon me. You have kept your promises
and provided me with the way of salvation. Please empower and
strengthen me as I commit myself to bless, serve, and encourage
others for your glory. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Why of Death
Day 188
Right now you might not be feeling very close to God. You might be
thinking, Where is God? Does God really care? How could He let this
happen? What does my future hold?
Dr. Robert Jeffress shares the response of a man who lost three of his
seven children through horrible deaths to leukemia: "When somebody
asks him, 'How could you keep believing in a God who would allow you
and your children to experience such a tragedy?', this is what he
says, 'In those kind of experiences you have two choices: You can
either give up or you can keep believing in God even when it doesn't
make sense. Faith means something when it's exercised in the
darkness.'"
Dr. Jeffress adds his own insight: "I believe that faith means
something when you don't understand the whys. I don't think God ever
condemns you for asking why. But in the ultimate analysis, the
question is not why but it is Who? God calls on you to believe in Him
who said, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the
Father but by me. I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes
in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live again' [John 14:6,
11:25]. Ultimately you must trust in that."
Lord God, I have so many questions and doubts and feelings of guilt
and blame. Where do I go from here? Lead me in Your way, truth, and
life. Amen.

I know I need His perspective
and peace. But as I prepare for the holidays, my heart can get so
focused on planning and buying gifts that I forget to unwrap the most
important gift-the gift of Immanuel-God with us.
Restore to me the wonder that came with Jesus' birth,
when He left the riches of Heaven and wrapped Himself in rags of earth.
Making room in our hearts for Jesus through
prayer during this busy season is a gift we give to Him, and
ourselves. Right now, let's quiet our racing thoughts and take a
moment to enjoy the hush of Immanuel-God with us.

Power Verses:
Psalm 91:1-2, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will

refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'"(NIV)
Psalm 55:22, "Turn your burdens over to the LORD, and he will take
care of you." (GW)

This Day's Thought
To love what is below the human is degradation; to love what is human
for the sake of the human is mediocrity; to love the human for the
sake of the Divine is enriching; to love the Divine for its own sake
is sanctity.

This Day's Verse
Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall
flow together to the goodness of the LORD, for wheat, and for wine,
and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their
soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more
at all.

December 14
Psalm 146:3
Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help.
Jack called at meeting in the chairman's absence. During the meeting,
he outlined a new proposal for restructuring a part of the firm. It
was voted on and approved, ignoring the rules that stated that no
action could be taken in the chairman's absence. When the chairman
returned, he reconvened the meeting, overturned the decision, and
reminded the entire council of their bylaws. Jack was reprimanded for
usurping authority that was not his, and things got back to normal.
It is always wise to seek answers from the true authority. Decisions
made by people unqualified to make them often end in disaster. When we
put our trust in the wrong places, we may end up being hurt. The only
safe place to put our trust is in God. He will guide us in our
decisions, He will give us sound direction, and He will always be
honest and truthful with us.
Prayer: I look to many sources for guidance, Lord, but no one can
offer me the help You can. Help me place my total trust in You. Amen.
