INDIVIDUALITY
If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself.
Matthew 16:24
Individuality is the husk of the personal life. Individuality is all
elbows, it separates and isolates. It is the characteristic of the
child and rightly so; but if we mistake individuality for the
personal life, we will remain isolated. The shell of individuality is
God's created natural covering for the protection of the personal
life; but individuality must go in order that the personal life may
come out and be brought into fellowship with God. Individuality
counterfeits personality as lust counterfeits love. God designed
human nature for Himself; individuality debases human nature for
itself.
The characteristics of individuality are independence and
self-assertiveness. It is the continual assertion of individuality
that hinders our spiritual life more than anything else. If you say -
"I cannot believe," it is because individuality is in the road;
individuality never can believe. Personality cannot help believing.
Watch yourself when the Spirit of God is at work. He pushes you to
the margins of your individuality, and you have either to say - "I
shan't," or to surrender, to break the husk of individuality and let
the personal life emerge. The Holy Spirit narrows it down every time
to one thing (cf. Matthew 5:23-24). The thing in you that will not be
reconciled to your brother is your individuality. God wants to bring
you into union with Himself, but unless you are willing to give up
your right to yourself He cannot. "Let him deny himself" - deny his
independent right to himself, then the real life has a chance to
grow.

[Jesus said,] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an
hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

Trust and Do; Do and Trust
Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and
verily thou shalt be fed. (Psalm 37:3)
Trust and do are words which go well together, in the order in which
the Holy Spirit has placed them. We should have faith, and that faith
should work. Trust in God sets us upon holy doing: we trust God for
good, and then we do good. We do not sit still because we trust, but
we arouse ourselves and expect the Lord to work through us and by us.
It is not ours to worry and do evil but to trust and do good. We
neither trust without doing nor do without trusting.
Adversaries would root us out if they could; but by trusting and doing
we dwell in the land. We will not go into Egypt, but we will remain in
Immanuel's land-the providence of God, the Canaan of covenant love. We
are not so easily to be got rid of as the Lord's enemies suppose. They
cannot thrust us Out nor stamp us out: where God has given us a name
and a place, there we abide.
But what about the supply of our necessities? The Lord has put a
"verily" into this promise. As sure as God is true, His people shall
be fed. It is theirs to trust and to do, and it is the Lord's to do
according to their trust. If not fed by ravens, or fed by an Obadiah,
or fed by a widow, yet they shall be fed somehow. Away, ye fears!
As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Psalm 145:2
Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.
Janet, Ann, and Jenny all agreed. This year they were going to get
together daily to pray together and share their experiences. Over the
past few months they had spent more time in fellowship with one
another, and it was the best part of their weeks. They all worked in
the same office, ate lunch together, went to church together, and they
lived close enough that they could meet at one another's homes when
necessary. In covenant with God and one another, they promised to get
together for praise and prayer.
Perhaps such a set-up is not feasible for everyone, but it is easier
and more enjoyable when we can share our faith with others. Other
people hold us accountable to the commitment we make in a way that God
does not. He will not force anyone to make time for Him. It is from a
willing heart that God wants our time with Him to come. Friends and
prayer partners can help us remember God every day, and thereby help
us praise Him always.
Prayer: Every day will I praise Thee, Lord. I will try to take time
each day to reflect on the great gifts I have been given and the
wonderful love that is in my heart. Thank You for that love. Amen.

God Impressions
Live wisely among those who are not Christians, and make
the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and
effective so that you will have the right answer for everyone.
--Colossians 4:5-6 NLT
Have you ever played with Silly Putty-that pink,
squeezable, rubbery clay that comes in a plastic egg? One of the most
fun aspects of the putty is the way it will copy color pictures out of
a magazine or comic book.
I often think of that property of Silly Putty when I want
to leave what I call "God impressions" on people. You squeeze in a
moment, or stretch out the time to press your love of Christ up
against someone. Maybe it's just a smile and a "God bless your day."
Or returning a kindness with, "Thanks for helping me, and the next
time you're near a Bible, look up Hebrews 6:10... it's definitely
you!" Often, I'm able to leave a God impression on someone by singing
a hymn. People see me in this wheelchair, hear me singing praises to
God, and wonder, Where in the world does her joy come from? It has to
be God.
It's a way of pressing my life up against theirs for a
brief moment so that when I peel away... I've left a God impression on
that person-however brief or fleeting it might have been. And once you
encounter the Lord, you find yourself thirsty for something this world
can't offer, hungry for something this world can't satisfy.
Busy as you may be, you still encounter many people during
the course of your day. Press your love for Christ up against that
friend down the street or that co-worker or that woman you regularly
greet at the cash register. When you do, you'll leave them with a God
impression... and make them thirsty for more.
Father, may the fragrance of your Son be upon my life, so
that even entering or leaving a room, some lingering sense of his
presence will draw hearts to seek you.
Blessings,
Joni and Friends

Today's Promise from the Bible
Romans 5:9
Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved
from wrath through him.
Reflection
You are made right, O believer, in the blood of Christ! The curse of
Adam—that damnation unquenchable—has sloughed its hell-weight from
upon your shoulders and its death-strike shall not fell your head! No,
it has fallen upon another: the Christ! His righteousness is made
yours, and more: so too His salvation! No simple justification is the
believer's mere claim, but life—life eternal! Rejoice therefore, O
believer, in the princely salvation made yours by the blood of God
Himself!

Careful to Live Wisely
Ephesians 5:15-17: Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise
but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days
are evil. therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's
will is.
We live in an evil age, and therefore we must be careful to live
wisely. The alternative to being foolish and unwise is to understand
what the Lord's will is (and to live it).

Membership in the Universal Church
Sometimes people come into the local church who have never come into
the universal church. People join a church who have never been born
into the true church. Some churches actually throw the doors open and
say, "Now we'll sing the closing hymn for those who want to unite with
the church. Come to the front." Al Capone could come in and join.
Nobody asks any questions; they just take in anybody. I do not believe
in that at all, and I know you do not either. I believe that if you
are going to get into a local church, you should first be in the
universal church, which Jesus purchased with His own blood. You should
get into the church with rebirth, the Holy Spirit and regeneration.
Then you should join a local assembly. It is impossible to receive
Christ and reject His people. How do you find the Shepherd? Go where
the sheep are! If you do not know where the Shepherd is, then go where
the sheep are. All else being equal, that is where you will find the
Shepherd. Whoever receives Christ must receive His people too. Jesus
said, "He who receives you receives me" (Matthew 10:40a). Whoever
rejects the bride rejects the Bridegroom, and whoever rejects the
flock rejects the Shepherd. I think that is clear enough.
Verse
Then the church [singular noun] throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria
enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the
Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord. Acts
9:31
Thought
One does not enter the Church through the front door of a building,
the "New Comers Class" or an interview with elders. It is by being
born of God through faith in Christ. Then comes identification with a
local group of fellow believers who form a local
Prayer
Lord, thank You for local believers with whom I can worship, through
whom I can be ministered to and with whom I can be part of Your Church
in my community.

How often we say we would like to have some strong Christian pray for
us. In doing so we feel relieved to think that person is carrying us
in his or her faith.
But there is One whose prayers never fail to be fulfilled and who is
more willing to pray for us than is any human friend. His one business
at God's right hand is to make intercession for His people. When we
lay our burdens upon Him and claim His advocacy without doubt or fear,
we are simply acknowledging the truth of His own appointment and His
own definite promise and provision.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the
heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us . . . come boldly unto the
throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in
time of need (Hebrews 4:14, 16).
O'er the heavenly altar bending,
Jesus interceding stands,
All our prayers to heaven ascending,
Reach the Father through His hands.
Scripture
I pray not for the world, but for them—John 17:9

The Father's House
"Lord, I love the habitation of Thy House, and the place where Thy
glory dwelleth." Psalm 26:8
Worship is such a blessed privilege! The psalmist knew this and, while
in exile, longed for the Father's house and the worship he once had
experienced. Once we have tasted of true worship, it will be sorely
missed when it is absent from our lives. Worship changes us. We come
to His courts with expectation, ready to feel His presence and to hear
Him speak to us. It is in His glorious presence that we are able to
put into perspective all that happens to us. We regain our focus and
are pointed in the right direction once again. Worship brings us back
to the very heart of God. Living a life of continual worship is like
an exciting pilgrimage into the depths of God. As we worship Him more,
we learn more about Him. We will feel Him with us, we will know
without any doubt that we can trust Him. We will be able to go forth
into the world knowing He is at our side and that He will never leave
us or forsake us. His promises will be sure. This is what draws us
back to His House: our love for Him, for His sanctuary, and for the
place where His glory dwells.
Father, thank You for the splendors of worship! Thank You for what
worship does to my heart: gives me hope and courage and conviction to
move ahead in You. How I love to worship in Your house, O Lord! Thank
You for that privilege; may I never take it for granted and may it
always be the one place that my heart longs for! Amen

God's Ways Are Right"When you pass through the waters, I will be with
you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you." Isaiah
43:2-3 NASB
God knows what is best. No struggle will come your way apart from his
purpose, presence, and permission. What encouragement this brings!
You are never the victim of nature or the prey of fate. Chance is
eliminated. You are more than a weather vane whipped about by the
winds of fortune. Would God truly abandon you to the whims of
drug-crazed thieves, greedy corporate raiders, or evil leaders?
Perish the thought!
We live beneath the protective palm of a sovereign King who
superintends every circumstance of our lives and delights in doing us
good.
Nothing comes your way that has not first passed through the filter of his love.

John 3:21
'But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be
made manifest, that they are wrought in God.'
Jack was so proud to show off his wife, Eileen, when they went home
for the holidays. Over the summer and fall, she had lost sixty-five
pounds. She looked great, and Jack was proud of her. She had worked so
hard, and he felt she deserved some credit. It made Eileen feel good
to know it meant so much to Jack. God had been good to them both. He
had given them patience to deal with each other, and had blessed them
both with strength and encouragement. It was true that when a person
worked to do what the Lord wanted her to do, He crowned her in victory
and allowed her to bask in the limelight for awhile!

WHAT SPECIAL GIFT DO YOU
WANT TO RECEIVE?
And by their prayer for you, which long after
you for the exceeding grace of God in you.
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.
II Corinthians 9:14-15
When God sent His Son Jesus to be the Savior of the world, He gave us
many gifts within the Gift. When people receive the gift of Jesus,
they also receive these special gifts, which they could obtain in no
other way:
Forgiveness of sin. In Jesus we have redemption through His blood,
the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.
Teaching from the Holy Spirit. Jesus promised, The Helper, the Holy
Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all
things.
External life and a home in heaven. John said, "He who has the Son
has life". Jesus promised, "In My Father's house are many mansions; .
. . I go to prepare a place for you".
A love like no other. "As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you
. . . . Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's
life for his friends".
Jesus is both the gift and the Giver of every good gift. Have you
received God's indescribable Gift?

*Romans 8:19-25<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#1342bd1bdfc5a8c5_verses>
(Click

An acorn promises to grow into a giant oak tree, and it will keep this
promise if not eaten by a squirrel. A chicken lays an egg with the promise
that a new chick will hatch, unless, of course, we decide to eat bacon and
eggs for breakfast. Politicians promise to keep their country safe and
prosperous, but this promise can be met only if they are elected and if the
government cooperates. When God raised Jesus from the dead on the first
Easter Sunday, God promised you and me that we too will be raised into the
everlasting new creation. Will God keep this promise? We're waiting.
*God of promise, keep us steadfast in our hope. Nourish our hope so that it
sprouts into joy, cheerfulness, and care for all of your creatures. Come
Lord Jesus. Amen. *

*Romans 8:19-25* (NRSV)
19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the
children of God;
20 for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by
the will of the one who subjected it, in hope
21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and
will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.
22 We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until
now;
23 and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits
of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of
our bodies.
24 For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who
hopes for what is seen?
25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

*No earthly good?*
*And we also ought to lay down our lives... 1 John 3:16 (NKJV) *
*
"You're so heavenly minded that you're no earthly good!"
Ever hear that expression before? Of course you have, because there's often
a dynamic that takes place when it comes to the balance between earth and
eternity. Here's what can happen: People can become so fully focused on the
things of eternity that they lose touch with their responsibilities in the
here and now.
That's the exact opposite effect eternity is supposed to have on us. While
God wants us to have an eternal perspective, He also wants us actively
engaged with the world around us. The hope of Heaven shouldn't render us
useless but rather make us more and more useful.
What the world needs are people who are more sacrificial and less selfish.
A heavenward focus here on earth ought to inspire an attitude of sacrifice.
It's people who realize that Heaven is awaiting them who are able to loosen
their grip on the things of this life. They can gladly sacrifice now
because they're fully assured of what God will give them later.
Now, what would happen if everyone who is headed for Heaven really took
hold of this truth and applied it in a radical way? What if they became
more sacrificial and less selfish? What if they started serving others
instead of themselves? What if they started setting aside their own rights
and privileges in order to make things better for the people around them?
You already know the answer. Their lives would become much more useful
because, as Jesus taught us, our lives become most useful when we
sacrificially lay them down (John 12:25). A healthy perspective of Heaven
can always be measured by a sacrificial attitude here on earth. May we be
filled with both!
Think About It? What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?

*Joshua 3:8,15-17, NIV: "Tell the priests who carry the ark of the
covenant: 'When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in
the river.' ...as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the
Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, the water from upstream
stopped flowing. ...The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the
LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel
passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground."*
*"Where is He?" I wondered. There I was in the place where God wanted me,
prepared to do whatever He asked, but I felt alone. Didn't He say that He
would be there with me? I prayed. I knew it is during my prayer time that I
feel most connected to Him. Surely, while I prayed I would feel His
presence. I finished praying, and still I felt alone. "I don't want to do
this without You," I petitioned. And so, I began to teach. In obedience to
Him, I opened my heart and my mouth. And there He was. He met me in my
simple act of faith, and I felt His presence as I continued to do the work
He had brought me there to do. Just as with the priests of Israel who bore
the Ark of the Covenant, it often takes a step of obedience in faith before
we see God's work unfold.*

The Marvel of Life
Read Psalm 139:13-18
The greatest evidence of God's power is human birth. When a baby is
born, there is promise, potential and excitement. David considered
babies to be miracles from the hand of God. Eugene Peterson has said,
"In the presence of birth we don't calculate, we marvel." As we ponder
these truths, what should be our response?
We worship God. The word fearfully means "I am shuddering with
astonishment; I am trembling with awe" (v. 14). I fear that today
people have taken sex, conception, birth and babies and turned the
process into something functional instead of miraculous. Some people
think of sex as animal excitement, but David thought of spiritual
enrichment. No wonder we are aborting babies today; we don't see
anything holy about sex, conception and birth.
We show confidence in God. What we are is God's gift to us. What we do
with our lives is our gift to Him. He accepts us as we are. He's not
going to judge us on the basis of what He has given someone else, but
on the basis of what we have done with what He has given us. Never be
discouraged by what you don't have. Having confidence in God about
your life brings eager expectation.
We obey God. The more we glorify God, the more we enjoy Him. We can
take the miracle of life He gave us and wreck it, or we can present
our bodies to the Lord as a living sacrifice.
* * *
To leave God out of your life is simply to exist, not really to live.
Jesus died that you might be saved from your sins and one day go to
heaven. But while you're here on earth, God wants you to fulfill all
that He has built into you. Are you responding to His power for your
life? Worship Him, place your confidence in Him and obey Him.

ALL THINGS ARE OURS
"We have been blessed with all spiritual blessings in the heavenlies
in Christ. He has given us all things that pertain to life and
godliness." Ephesians 1:3, 2 Peter 1:3How incredibly blessed we are!
But how little we possess! You might say, "What do you mean by that?"
Israel is a prime example. God had delivered them out of Egyptian
bondage, which they had endured for 400 years. He had led them to
Kadesh Barnea where Moses choose 12 men, one from each tribe, to
search out the land of Canaan that God had promised them. They were on
the brink of receiving from the hand of God a land that "flowed with
milk and honey." He had covenanted with them that no one could conquer
them if they walked in obedience to Him.
They did not have to fear the enemy for God had already guaranteed the
victory. All they had to do was to claim and appropriate what God had
already promised to them. You would think they would be excited, full
of faith and ready to enter into the great blessings of God that lay
before them. But Israel balked in unbelief at their first opportunity
to enter the land. Only those born during those 40 years of wandering
finally entered Canaan.
This was simply the beginning of something even more unbelievable. All
the land was given to them, but every inch of it had to be claimed as
their gift from God. "Every place that the sole of your foot shall
tread upon, that have I given you" (Joshua 1:3). They had to walk the
land as if to say, "This land is mine by the gift of God!" As they
exercised this right, God made it good. Wow, what a deal! You would
think they could not claim their land fast enough. But here is where
they fell so miserably. They only claimed 25% of all the land God had
promised to them. You might say, "That's incredible. Why didn't they
possess it all?"
This is the picture of you and me. God has promised us that He "shall
supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus"
(Philippians 4:19). God also said, "Call unto me, and I will answer
thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not"
(Jeremiah 33:3).
These are but a few of the hundreds of promises God has covenanted
with those who put their trust in Him and walk in obedience to Him.
You say, "That's great!" True, but let me ask you. How many promises
have you claimed by saying "This is mine by the grace of God?" "All
things are ours...He hath given us all things that pertain to life and
godliness." We have an inheritance that is beyond our comprehension,
yet we live as paupers! Our failure is even greater than Israel's. We
claim less of all that God has promised to us and purchased for us
through Christ!
May we with implicit faith launch out into a new and living way to
experience the blessing God has for us. We need to claim and
appropriate what is ours "in Christ." Let us search God's Word and not
depart from it to the right or to the left. Let us continue in prayer
until we enter into the abundant life God wants to give us. Then we
can experience the liberty and freedom of the Spirit that in "all
things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us" (Romans
8:37). He will empower, encourage, enable and be our sufficiency for
all we encounter. IT IS OURS IN CHRIST! Dare to believe Him in all
things. When we cannot see His hand, reach out in faith and trust His
heart. His mercies "are new every morning: great is [His]
faithfulness" (Lamentations 3:23). Possess your possessions!

Loved
Hosea 1-4, Revelation 1
Key Verse: Revelation 1:5
The apostle John knew Jesus. He walked with Him, heard Him teach and
joined with Him in ministry. When Jesus died on the cross, John was
there and was given a special responsibility, that of caring for Mary,
the mother of Jesus. He is remembered as the Apostle of Love-but he
was not always known by that name.
In the list of disciples in Mark 3, John and his brother James are
called the "Sons of Thunder" (v. 17). When the Samaritans would not
receive Jesus, John and James were ready to command fire from heaven
to destroy the place (Luke 9:54)! John not only was with Jesus, but he
also was changed by Jesus. He went from one who would react with a
call for judgment to being characterized as a man of love. John knew
the reality of being loved and became one who loved.
In the opening chapter of the Revelation of Jesus Christ, John gave
greetings and a doxology. Doxologies are words of praise. His praise
of Jesus includes this phrase: "to him who loves us and has freed us
from our sins by his blood" (v. 5). John had experienced both the love
of Jesus and the cleansing that can be received from Him.
John may not have been the most lovable of individuals. Typically,
someone described as a "son of thunder" does not invoke images of
relational warmth! Yet there is no more tender picture of closeness
and purity in relationship as that of John at the table during the
Last Supper, leaning on Jesus. He knew love and was changed by the
love of Jesus.
We are loved and it should show. How do others see you? If you are
more like a son of thunder than an apostle of love, ask Jesus to help
change you like He changed John.

The Word Cleanses Your Walk
John 17:13-19
The Bible speaks of our being sanctified by the Word of God as well as
by the blood of Christ and by the Holy Spirit.
Just as Christ is not of the world, so the believer is not of the
world. God uses His Word, under the power and work of the Holy Spirit,
to bring about the changes He wants in our conduct.
Concerning this our Saviour prayed in John 17:16-19, "They are not of
the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy
truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so
have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify
myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth."
This sanctification by the Word of God is a continuous process; it
goes on from day to day. Obviously, in order to be set apart by the
Word of God, we must learn to know the Word of God.
Some people are not separated from the old life of sin as they should
be, even though they have made a profession of faith in Christ. The
reason is not necessarily that they are not born again but that the
Word of God does not have the place in their lives it should.
The Holy Spirit indwells them, but because they have not studied the
Word of God and allowed the Spirit to apply it to their lives, they
have not experienced the purification and cleansing that follows.
"Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you" (John 15:3).
