The Expression Of Pride
Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling
Pride is a killer. Pride says, "I can do it alone. I can get myself out of
this mess without God's help." Oh, no you can't! We absolutely need God,
and we desperately need each other. Paul wrote, "We are the true
circumcision, who worship in the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus
and put no confidence in the flesh" (Philippians 3:3). Humility is
confidence properly placed. Examine the instructions on pride and humility
in James 4:6-10 and 1 Peter 5:1-10. The context reveals that spiritual
conflict follows the expression of pride. Pride is what caused Lucifer to
be thrown out of heaven.
Jesus said, "Simon, Simon [Peter], behold, Satan has demanded permission to
sift you like wheat" (Luke 22:31). On what basis could Satan make that
demand? The context reveals the answer: "There arose also a dispute among
them as to which one of them was regarded to be greatest" (Luke 22:24).
Pride was Peter's downfall, and it opened the door to the devil's
opposition.
The Lord says that pride goes before destruction and an arrogant spirit
before stumbling (Proverbs 16:18). We must confess areas where we have not
denied ourselves, picked up our cross daily, and followed Him (Matthew
16:24). In so doing we have given ground to the enemy in our lives.
Have we believed that we could be successful and live victoriously by our
own strength and resources? We must confess that we have sinned against God
by placing our will before His and by centering our lives around self
instead of Him. We must renounce the self life and by so doing cancel all
the ground that has been gained in our members by the enemies of the Lord
Jesus Christ.
We must pray that God will guide us so that we will do nothing from
selfishness or empty conceit, but that with humility of mind we will regard
others as more important than ourselves (Philippians 2:3). We must ask God
to enable us through love to serve others and in honor prefer others
(Romans 12:10).
Prayer: Loving Lord, I want my life to be marked by a humble spirit today.
Forgive me for my proud, self-centered ways and independent spirit.

Read Hebrews 1 – 4
Highlights:
Jesus, the Son and Heir, is greater than the angels (Heb. chap. 1). Jesus,
the Man (2:17; 3:6), overcame all temptations (4:15). Jesus is greater than
Moses (chap. 3). Jesus, the Word, cuts deeply and truly (4:12; see John
1:1-5,14). Jesus provides His mercy and grace every day (Heb. 4:16).
The superiority of Christ is the theme of the Book of Hebrews. He is far
superior to the prophets, the priests, Moses, and the Law, as well as
angels. For unto which of the angels said He (God) at any time, Thou art My
Son (Heb. 1:5)? Although angels are messengers of God, Jesus Christ — the
Son of God — is superior though born in a Bethlehem manger.
The Lord Jesus Christ is also superior to the high priest. Seeing then that
we have a great High Priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son
of God, let us hold fast our profession (4:14).
Christ cleansed us from our sins by His blood; He now sits at the right
hand of God as our High Priest: Wherefore He is able also to save them to
the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make
intercession for them (7:25). The Covenant of God with the Israelites
centered upon the Ten Commandments that were on tables of stone, written
with the finger of God (Ex. 31:18); but the Covenant of Christ with His
born-again believers is written upon our hearts (Heb. 8:10).
The Old Covenant was temporary, but the Covenant of Christ is eternal
(13:20). For believers to worship God under the Old Covenant, it was
necessary for the blood of many animals to be offered daily. But the New
Covenant required only one sacrifice — Christ's own blood once for all
(10:1-29).
The word better is one of the key words in the Book of Hebrews. We have a
better Covenant (8:6), better promises (8:6), a better hope (7:19), and a
better . . . substance (10:34).
This Book reveals that the power to live the victorious Christian life is
Jesus Christ. As the Living Word of God, He is all-wise and all-knowing.
The Holy Spirit uses the Bible as our all-sufficient source of strength,
enabling us to live in fellowship with Him.
Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into His
rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. . . . For the Word of God
is quick (full of life), and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints
and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. .
. . Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may
obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:1,12,16).

or think, according to the power that worketh in us (Eph. 3:20).

Word Studies:
Heb. 2:17 behoved, was necessary for, was imperative for; 4:8 Jesus, Joshua
(not the Lord Jesus Christ). Jesus is the Greek word of the Hebrew word
Joshua. Joshua could not provide complete peace in their "promised land"
because of their unbelief. Israelites in that day had to look forward (in
time) to heaven for their perfect peace, just as Christians do today.

2 Peter 2
Beware of false teachers whose lives deny their faith and who will be
judged by God.
INSIGHT
False teachers are viewed gravely in the Scriptures. Perhaps the most
scathing rebukes and most unthinkable punishments are articulated against
these "wolves in sheep's clothing." Why are they dealt with so harshly?
Because while refusing salvation themselves, they also keep others from it.
It is like a drowning man who not only refuses to accept a lifesaver, but
also insists on drowning someone else with him. We must take great care to
accurately teach the truth and shun those who do not.
PRAYER
We can walk in fellowship with the Lord and praise Him regardless of how we
feel:
Praise the Lord!
Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the name of the Lord!
Blessed be the name of the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its going down
The Lord's name is to be praised. . . .
Who is like the Lord our God,
Who dwells on high,
Who humbles Himself to behold
The things that are in the heavens and in the earth? . . .
He grants the barren woman a home,
Like a joyful mother of children.
Praise the Lord! (Psalm 113:1-3, 5-6, 9).
Pause for praise and thanksgiving.
Pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from
sin:
Show me Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day (Psalm 25:4-5).
Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, and pray this
affirmation to the Lord:
Having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have
your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin
is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 6:22-23)
As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:
wisdom in decision making,
the needs of your friends,
whatever else is on your heart.
Finally, offer this prayer to the Lord:
This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it (Psalm 118:24).

Great is Your Faithfulness
"Pour out your heart like water in the presence of the Lord" (Lamentations
2:19).
Recently I was playing Bible Challenge, a Bible trivia game, with some
friends. My partner and I got the question "Who is the author of
Lamentations?" My partner shouted out "Jeremiah!" I thought it was someone
else, but she spoke with such conviction, I went with her answer. It turns
out she was right.
My friend laughed and said, "You know you're bad off when you're looking
for comfort in the book of Lamentations!" She had been walking through
three years of medical challenges and felt like she was still no closer to
resolve than when she started her journey. At times she has been
discouraged to the point of despair and felt totally abandoned by a God she
knows loves her. And yet in the midst of all of it she found comfort in
Jeremiah's words in Lamentations 3.
"He has driven me away and made me walk in darkness rather than light;
indeed He has turned His hand against me again and again, all day long. He
has made my skin and my flesh grow old... Even when I call out or cry for
help He shuts out my prayer... I have been deprived of peace; I have
forgotten what prosperity is. So I say, "my splendor is gone and all that I
had hoped from the Lord." I remember my affliction and my wandering... I
well remember them and my soul is downcast within me. Yet this I call to
mind and therefore I have hope.
Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions
NEVER fail. They are new every morning; GREAT IS YOUR FAITHFULNESS. I say
to myself, 'The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for Him.'"
(emphasis mine).
If you are at the point of despair, do what Jeremiah did and pour out your
heart to God. And then call to your mind the fact that GREAT is God's
faithfulness. He has not abandoned you and He loves you. Don't allow Satan
to deceive you to think anything else. God will be faithful in your life.

Hang On!

Today's Truth
My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me (Psalm 63:8, NIV).
Friend to Friend
Have you ever felt that this thing called life is just too hard? I know I
have. Sometimes life just does not turn out like I thought it would.
That's when I have to hang onto God and simply trust Him.
I remember when my son was four-years-old and I was trying to teach him how
to snow ski. The first day was just horrible…at least it was for me. I
felt like a down-covered workhorse as I lugged two sets of skis in one arm
while dragging along Steven with the other. Clunky ski boots, overstuffed
mittens, and a hooded snowsuit made it difficult for Steven to maneuver.
Add all that to the slippery snow, and we had the perfect formula for a day
of whining in winter wonderland.
I tried to teach Steven how to snow plow to keep from going too fast.
That's when you point the tips of the skis toward the center and the backs
of the skis point out. Well, he just wasn't catching on. He fell and he
fell and he fell.
Finally, I came up with another idea. I made an A-frame tent with my legs,
Steven stood in front of me, and wrapped his arms around my thighs. Off we
went. We moved as one. If I turned left, he went with me. If I turned
right, he went with me. His only responsibility was to hang on and
relinquish control. And even though he thought he was skiing, in reality,
I was the one skiing and he was simply along for the ride.
That is a great picture of what trusting God is all about. That's a
picture of what "abiding in Jesus" is all about. We cling to him, hang on
to Him, abide in Him. If He goes left, I go left. If He goes right, I go
right. David wrote in Psalm 63:8, "My soul clings to You." In other words,
David was saying, "I'm hanging on for dear life" Just like Steven did.
Today, as you move through life, cling to Jesus. Hang on to Him.
Acknowledge His presence with you and His Spirit in you. Trust Him!
Let's Pray
Jesus, I'm trusting You today. I'm clinging to You. I'm hanging on Your
every word.

As we walk through this world, we are to love one another. The Apostle
Paul
gave good advice to the Romans, and also to all who read his words
throughout
the ages. He tells us "to live peaceable with all persons, if it be
possible,
as much as lieth in you." He goes on to instruct the dearly beloved, not
to avenge
themselves, or give place unto wrath, for the Lord has said, "vengeance is
mine;
I will repay." God will recompense for evil done unto his children. He
will fight
the battles, and has already won the war. We must leave things in God's
hands.
After one has done all they can, they can stand still and expect to see the
salvation
of the Lord, just as promised.
Instructions given by the great Apostle Paul, sum up the real
core of Christian living. If we love others as Christ loves us, we will be
willing
to forgive. Because we have experienced the grace of our Lord, we will want
to pass it on to others, and be merciful. Grace is undeserved favor, and we
must be willing to return good for evil. In spite of one's faults or
failures,
when we forgive, we show love as Jesus has shown us.
If a Christian returns evil, for evil, it will hurt them as much as the one
who did harm unto them. Even if a person's enemy never repents, forgiving
them will free one from carrying a heavy load of bitterness and set them
free. Many times, right actions will lead to right feelings. Circumstances
can change, through the help of the Lord.
We notice Paul said, "if at all possible," to do these things. We can
forgive one,
regardless of circumstances, but reconciliation may not be possible in
some cases,
or may be rejected. If this be the case, the Lord will be the Judge, and
will
give the grace needed for each person to have peace. He is our hiding
place.
In this place, we will find his extra grace is sufficient, for all the
storms of life.
We should seek to keep peace in our lives. We know His peace is
a blessing of being in God's love and favor. We should also seek to live
in harmony and unity with one another. Peacemakers are blessed now, and
will also be blessed in the days to come, as children of God.
We could never repay Christ for the debt He paid for us on Calvary. But,
because of His great love, but we can show love to others as he has shown
to
us. "Be ye kind one to another" is great advice. The world would
be a better place in which to live if all obeyed the admonitions given in
God's Word. God's grace is still amazing as He keeps on saving.
When we think of His forgiveness and great love, we sometimes ask
the question, "who am I, that a King should live and die for?"
Thanks to the Lord today for having us on his mind, when He was on the
cross of Calvary.
May we have him on our mind, as we take up our cross and follow Him each
day.
He is the Bridge of Life that will take us one day to our Father's House.
Jesus will always be with us and His grace is all sufficient.

What's Your Message?

"Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not
forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart
as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children
after them." Deuteronomy 4:9 (NIV)
My heart breaks as I see my girls struggle. Navigating the waters of
school, I watch as waves of rejection slam against the boats of their
hearts.
Often, I feel like I'm in the storm with them. Why do I feel
vulnerable when I see the tears in their eyes?
Perhaps memories of my own turbulent teen years are not far gone.
Painful remembrances of growing up come to the surface: confusion, a
boy's brush-off, constant over-analyzing myself.
Yet my girls' struggles also bring thankfulness to my heart. I'm so
grateful God sent amazing friends into my life when I was a young
woman. I'll never forget friends who helped me discover that no man -
be it a dad, boyfriend or even a husband one day - could fill the love
gap in my heart. Only Jesus can fill what He created.
I am also thankful God placed me here, in my girls' lives, to share
with them this same truth. You see, when Jesus showed me He was the
only one who can fill the emptiness of my heart, He didn't just give
that truth for me!
Jesus gave me His truth so I can pass His radical love onto my kids
and hopefully my grandkids one day.
As today's key verse tells us, "Only be careful, and watch yourselves
closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or
let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your
children and to their children after them." (Deut. 4:9) We have
opportunity and influence in the lives of your children and others.
What is one truth God has revealed that you can pass on to your
children, your children's children or young people in your world? Are
there revelations or treasures from His Word, glimpses into His heart
that He's given to you? If so, they are not just for your benefit, but
also for the benefit of your family and those in your sphere of
influence.
Has the Lord given you a clear understanding of forgiveness? Teach
your child the process of working through a grudge.
Have you experienced the Lord's healing? Come alongside those in your
life as they mend.
Do you cling to hope because God has lifted your spirits? Share that
with another who's in the middle of grim circumstances.
Let's not take for granted all the Lord has done in our lives.
Instead, let's intentionally ask God to show us our message so we can
naturally share it with others, passing on the truth and stories of
God's faithfulness for generations to come.
Dear Lord, help me be intentional today to share with my children, and
others in my life, all of the truth You have set to work in my heart.
Help me make the most of the message You have given me and pass Your
Word on to the next generation. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

THOUGHTS FOR TODAY
Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin
shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Isaiah 9:6-7
(6) For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the
government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
(7) Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no
end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and
to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth
and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

prince of peace Jesus Christ , Read: Luke 2:1-20
The events leading up to the birth of Christ weren't coincidental, but
were put in place by God, so that the prophecies of old would be
fulfilled, in Isaiah 7: 13-14; Isaiah 9: 6-7; Micah 5: 2-5.
Everything that happened, from the time the census was ordered, to
everyone returning to their own city to be registered, and then the
birth of Jesus while Joseph & Mary were in Bethlehem, was orchestrated
by God. Out of Bethlehem, a small town in the City of David, came the
Messiah.
This event was the beginning of something so incredible. Jesus Christ
left His throne in glory and took on human form just to bring us
reconciliation to our Father God. He came into the world, miraculously
conceived, and then born as all humans are. He was first a baby, then
became a toddler, then grew into a child and went through adolescence
before becoming an adult. He experienced humanity at all levels. He
truly can identify with all people at all stages of life.
This very first Christmas, God gave the greatest gift ever. His Son!
And His Son gave the gift of His life - which was why He came. Because
of this, we can have relationship with God as His children. Through
Jesus Christ, we are Sons and Daughters of the Most High God.
So this Christmas, bear in mind the 'True' Christmas story, which led
to the 'True' Easter story. Let us give thanks and praise to our
heavenly Father for these events, which have changed our lives
forever.
No matter how 'secular' the world is becoming, disregarding the truth
of Christmas, let us boldly proclaim the truth about the birth of
Jesus as the reason for the season.
Let us claim 'CHRISTmas' back!
If we could condense all the truths of Christmas into only three
words, these would be the words: "God with us." We tend to focus our
attention at Christmas on the infancy of Christ. The greater truth of
the holiday is His deity. More astonishing than a baby in the manger
is the truth that this promised baby is the omnipotent Creator of the
heavens and the earth!

In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can
extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet
of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.
Ephesians 6:16-18
Not long ago, I was talking with one of the men at church about why
people don't pray today. And after going back in forth for awhile, we
both concluded that there's really a simple answer: because most of
them know nothing about spiritual warfare.
You see, understanding spiritual warfare is the key to prayer. One
author wrote, "Prayer is a wartime walkie-talkie, not a domestic
intercom." And it's when we think of prayer as a way of just asking
for more comforts and less trouble that we cease to pray biblically,
and instead pray comfortably.
Another reason I think so many don't pray is because they don't really
have the faith to pray. To them, prayer doesn't really make that much
of a difference. But if they really believed that God moved in
response to their prayers, nothing would keep them from taking their
request to Him!
It's not enough just to have faith to believe in God. You have to
believe God. You have to trust that He will come through when you need
Him, and will never hold back what is good and perfect for you. So
when you pray, pray dangerously and expect a great response from your
Father in heaven!
BIBLICAL PRAYER IS MORE THAN JUST ASKING FOR MORE COMFORT AND LESS
TROUBLE. SO WHEN YOU PRAY, ASK GOD TO DO BIG THINGS AND EXPECT A GREAT
RESPONSE!

God's Wisdom Revealed
1 Corinthians 2:6-16
After exposing the futility of worldly thinking in 1 Corinthians 1,
Paul introduces Christians to the higher realm of godly wisdom. This
kind of knowledge and understanding isn't available through human
intelligence and reasoning; it comes strictly through divine
revelation. Only those indwelt by God's Spirit have "the mind of
Christ" (v. 16) and access to "the things freely given" to them by God
(v. 12).
Without this supernatural insight, no one can accurately know the Lord
or His ways. Many people say they believe in God yet may not have a
correct understanding of Him because their perceptions are based on
their own thoughts and ideas. It's easier to custom-design a god to
fit our preferences than to make the required adjustments that worship
of the one true God demands.
Even believers need to guard against trying to fit God into their
preconceived image of Him. The Bible is the only reliable source of
divine revelation, but we must be careful to consider the Scriptures
as a whole—it's critical that we don't just pick and choose the verses
we want to believe. For example, by focusing only on passages that
emphasize the Lord's lovingkindness while excluding those that speak
of His holiness and justice, we misunderstand His true nature.
Let's seek to know the Lord in truth by considering the entire counsel
of Scripture. Divine wisdom is available to every believer through the
Holy Spirit, who searches the depths of God. May we never try to limit
Him to fit our preferences. Instead, may He enlarge our minds to
embrace His thoughts.

Today's Devotional
Let Every Heart
Luke 2:8-11,13-14 - And there were shepherds living out in the fields
nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord
appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and
they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I
bring good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in
the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the
Lord." Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the
angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on
earth peace to men on whom his favour rests." (NIV)
When I try to imagine what the shepherds witnessed, the best
description I can muster seems totally inadequate: an awe-inspiring
light show, an angelic proclamation, and a chorus of the army of
heaven praising God and invoking His peace. What they saw and heard
was so important that it caused them to hurry off to Bethlehem to
check whether what they had been told was real. After they saw the
Messiah, Christ the Lord, they spread the amazing word.
Seeing angels and then the Saviour changed the shepherds' lives. It
sent them out of their fields and into town! With that experience, how
could their hearts not have been changed? It is beyond comprehension
how any of them could deny the good news of great joy for all people
after the eye-popping, jaw-dropping experience that we read about in
Luke. Could we say that after the glory of the Lord shone around them
and they witnessed such a light show and angelic proclamation in the
fields, there was lots of room in the shepherds' hearts for Christ,
the Lord?
Most of us have sung these words at Christmas:
Joy to the world! The Lord is come:
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing.
All of us know of hearts where there could be more room for Christ. I
know that I want more room for Christ in my own heart. What is the
signal for me to clear clutter out of my heart? I frisk my attitudes
and beliefs using the
list of what is "love" and "not love" in 1 Corinthians 13:4-8: Am I
patient, kind, rejoicing in truth, always protecting, trusting,
hoping, and ready to persevere? Or do I find myself expressing "not
love": envy, boasting, false pride, rudeness, seeking selfish desires,
a short temper, unwillingness to
forgive, delighting in evil, and being ready to quit?
This Advent, I have a project. I want my heart to change and make more
room for Christ. When I want to weed something unlovely from my
innermost being, I use this promise:
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will
forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (NIV)
To me, that good news promise is captivating, glorious, almost beyond
comprehension, and love inspiring -- an idea with power to amaze me
equally as the shepherds were amazed. And just like the shepherds, it
sends me to seek and find more of Him.
Merry Christmas! Let's imagine what the shepherds began to realize
when Christ was born. Let us think what it did for them and what more
it could do for each of us!
Prayer: We praise You, Father! We ask You, in the name of Christ, to
help us to be so full of Your amazing love that it spills out to touch
everyone around us. Amen.

One of the functions of angels is to watch over
God's Children here on Earth. For it is written; For
He shall give His angels charge over you,
to keep you in all your ways. ( HEBREWS 1:14 ) Therefore it is
clear that our Heavenly Father will
send us an angel in times of need!
Now, let me ask you this, have you ever met an angel?
Well I bet you have! An angel doesn't have to be a Spiritual
Being, sometimes they are human beings just like you
and me. When you think about it, we all have encountered
another person who has been just like an angel to us.
A person who has reached out to help, comfort and guide
us in times of need. The World is full of these human
angels! I'll even bet that someone has even called you an
angel at one time or another.
So the next time you encounter a person in need,
reach out and be an angel to them! Your Heavenly Father
will bless you for it!
Now may; The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and the love of God, and the communion
of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.

"Family Resemblance"
"And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the
image of the heavenly." 1 Corinthians 15:49
It's not very often that I get to spend much time with my sister, but
we were able to spend the whole day together just the two of us this
weekend. Each time we have been together for any length of time and
are out among the public, I have noticed that we are much more alike
than I thought we were. We both have some of the same mannerisms. We
interact with other people the same way. We have some of the same
characteristics. We think alike, act alike and conduct ourselves in
certain situations the same way- even though in many ways we are
uniquely different.
While my sister and I don't look alike at all, we do tend to act
alike. The reason is obvious-- we are family. I was thinking about
this yesterday and the Lord spoke to me about family resemblance. As
a part of God's family there should be some family resemblance that I
have with my Big Brother (Jesus). I should have the same character
and mannerisms that He has- love, grace, peace, joy. I should
interact with others the way He does- with concern, compassion, mercy,
patience.
The reason these same characteristics are evident in my sister and I
is because we have the same daddy and mama. Jesus and I have the same
Father- I am God's child. Therefore, I should be acting like Him. It
should be said of me- "when you have seen me, you have seen the
Father" (just as Jesus said). I am not saying that when you see me,
you see deity and you don't see a "little god", but you should see His
nature alive in me- the Fruit of the Spirit.
Another reason for the resemblance in our mannerisms is because my
sister and I both grew up in the same house together- we both got our
training, upbringing and influence from the same place. While Jesus
was on the earth He was trained in "God's word" and communed with the
Father through prayer. I am being trained in "God's word" also, and I
have the same communion with the Father that Jesus did- if I am
spending time with the Father in prayer. So, like my sister and I
both grew up under the same influence, Jesus (while He was on earth)
and I are under the same influence- God's word and His Holy Spirit.
This means there should be a family resemblance between us.
Is there a family resemblance between you and Jesus? Do you "look"
like the Father in your mannerisms, in the way you conduct yourself,
in the way you deal with others? Do other people know that you are
part of the family of God by the way you act and speak?
Have a great day. What kind of family resemblance do you bear with
your Big Brother Jesus?

"Now therefore, command that they [the servants of Hiram] cut down
cedars for me from Lebanon; and my servants will be with your
servants, and I will pay you wages for your servants according to
whatever you say. For you know there is none among us who has skill to
cut timber like the Sidonians."
Teamwork
Don Bennett, a Seattle businessman, decided he wanted to climb
Washington's Mount Rainier. It's a stiff climb to the peak of the
14,410-foot summit, but so many individuals have succeeded that it no
longer merits much attention. But for Bennett, the climb was a
remarkable achievement. He made the climb on one leg and two crutches.
Asked to share the most important lesson he learned, Bennett gave
credit to the team of individuals who helped him attain his dream. He
observed, "You can't do it alone."
Solomon realized this same truth. When he became king, he inherited
from his father not only the kingdom but also the task of building a
temple worthy of the God of the universe. Such an awesome
responsibility would have been overwhelming, but Solomon knew it could
be done if he called on others to help. Accordingly, he contacted a
friend of his father, King Hiram of Tyre, and requested his most
skilled lumbermen. The king graciously agreed. And thanks to the
benefit of teamwork, they built one of the most beautiful temples
ever.
Christians are notorious for not working together as a team. Some try
to worship God on their own. The writer of Hebrews had to admonish
such people about "forsaking the assembling of ourselves together"
(10:25). Others can be difficult to get along with (1 Cor. 1:11). But
whatever we accomplish alone is not nearly what we could have
accomplished with others.
Are you willing to be a team player? Can your pastor count on you to
pitch in with others in your church when there is a job to be done?
More will get done if we do it together. Learn from the wisdom of
Solomon. Be a part of something greater than yourself. Be a part of a
team.
The best work is teamwork.

Fullness Begins With Thirst
John 7:37-39
Along with obeying we must desire to be filled and then appropriate
the filling. Our Lord said in John 7:37, "If any man thirst, let him
come unto me, and drink."
Here are two prerequisites for the filling of the Holy Spirit: thirst
and trust. Thirst suggests desire, and drinking suggests obedience and
trust.
Included in this desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit must be our
wanting God to judge and put away sin in our lives.
We must desire to be separated unto the Lord from the world and its
evil system. We must reckon ourselves dead to sin and alive to God.
This is true positionally, but it can be made true in our spiritual
life only as we yield to the Holy Spirit's control.
We must also desire the fruit of the Spirit in our lives. Do we want
love, joy, peace and these other evidences of the Spirit's life in us?
Do we long to enthrone Christ as Lord?
Thirst should cause us to drink, and desire should cause us to trust.
In the words of our Saviour, out of our innermost beings "shall flow
rivers of living water" (v. 38).
We not only trust Christ to save us from sin, but we also trust Him to
fill us with the Spirit.
This particular phase of believing, or trusting, in Christ should be a
continuous attitude of trusting, of committing ourselves to the Lord
in order to be controlled by the Holy Spirit.
"And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the
Spirit" (Eph. 5:18).
