HE'S NOT PLAYING FAVORITES -- Judges 1:17 NIV
Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their brothers and attacked
the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city.
Therefore it was called Hormah. (Hormah means "destruction".)
The fact that God told Israel to destroy the Canaanites and drive them out
of the land seems cruel and harsh doesn't it? It sounds like God was
playing favorites, telling Israel to go in and take someone's property away
from them and either kill them or drive them off into the desert.
But look at what God did to Israel, both before and after their conquest of
Canaan. They had spent 400 years in slavery in Egypt. They had been forced
to follow the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night all
over the wilderness for 40 years, eating manna until they probably thought
they would choke on it. Later, they would be driven out of Canaan and
scattered all over the earth - each time because of their lack of faith,
their lack of faithfulness, their stubbornness, their turning to evil ways
and to other gods.
God doesn't play favorites... with anyone. Each person who lives on this
earth - no matter who you are, what gender you are, what color you are,
where you live, what you own or don't own, how educated or uneducated you
are, how rich or poor you are, what language you speak, how intelligent you
are, what church you attend - you have exactly the same standing before God.
Each person stands subject to God's judgment, His discipline, and His
punishment. But each person also has available all of God's love, all of
His faithfulness, all of His forgiveness, and all of His mercy, all of His
grace and blessings. When that person is adopted into God's family through
faith in Jesus Christ, that person becomes a son or daughter of the Father,
with all the rights and blessings granted to any beloved child.
"You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who
were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is
neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one
in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:26-28 NIV
