JULY 29, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST. MARTHA, DISCIPLE OF THE LORD
THURSDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
1 JOHN 4:7-16
My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and
everyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. Whoever fails to
love does not know God, because God is love. This is the revelation of
God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we
might have life through him. Love consists in this: it is not we who
loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate our sins. My
dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another.
No one has ever seen God, but as long as we love one another God
remains in us and his love comes to its perfection in us. This is the
proof that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us a share
in his Spirit. We ourselves have seen and testify that the Father sent
his Son as Saviour of the world. Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is
the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God. We have recognised
for ourselves, and put our faith in, the love God has for us. God is
love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.
LUKE 10:38-42
In the course of their journey he came to a village, and a woman named
Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who
sat down at the Lord's feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha,
who was distracted with all the serving, came to him and said, 'Lord,
do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by
myself? Please tell her to help me.' But the Lord answered, 'Martha,
Martha,' he said, 'you worry and fret about so many things, and yet
few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better
part, and it is not to be taken from her.'
REFLECTION
Martha seems to be put in a bad light when she asked Jesus to instruct
Mary to help her with some chores. That's because Mary chose to sit
and listen to Jesus instead of assisting Martha. Martha, at times, is
perceived to be the model of love in action. Refreshments won't
magically serve themselves. Venues remain dirty until they are cleaned
up by those specifically tasked to do just that. If nobody moves, most
probably nothing will happen or get done.
Of course, praying in church and attending inspirational talks play
their part. If it gives more meaning to what we do for God, that
source of wisdom and insight can place our outreach efforts in the
proper context — to do things that can benefit the community, things
need to get done; and some physical activity is required for this.
May we be inspired by Martha in the aspect of committed service. As we
offer that glass of refreshing water, as we offer any financial aid we
can, as we give our time and effort for a good cause, may we be Martha
to each other. With his guidance, may we all become more involved in
our ministries which truly cater to helping others.
