Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to roll out sophisticated electronic ID tags to
track individual pairs of jeans and underwear, the first step in a system
that advocates say better controls inventory but some critics say raises
privacy concerns. Starting next month, the retailer will place removable
"smart tags" on individual garments that can be read by a hand-held scanner.
Wal-Mart workers will be able to quickly learn, for instance, which size of
Wrangler jeans is missing, with the aim of ensuring shelves are optimally
stocked and inventory tightly watched. If successful, the radio-frequency ID
tags will be rolled out on other products at Wal-Mart's more than 3,750 U.S.
stores. "This ability to wave the wand and have a sense of all the products
that are on the floor or in the back room in seconds is something that we
feel can really transform our business," said Raul Vazquez, the executive in
charge of Wal-Mart stores in the western U.S. Before now, retailers
including Wal-Mart have primarily used RFID tags, which store unique
numerical identification codes that can be scanned from a distance, to track
pallets of merchandise traveling through their supply chains

out the window of my 153rd floor home at the other Farmpartments, all energy
self-sufficient and covered with dwarf fruit that the robo-monkeys pick for
us in the night. What should I do first? Get my e-democracy voting over
with, or loosen up with my Sexbot? I chose the latter. As I grunt happily
with my Margaret Sanger model, I hear my wife in the next room doing the
same thing with her love-droid. Ha, ha. These were great 80th Anniversary
presents for each other. *6:30*: Now I'm voting. What a chore. With
representative democracy, instead of the every-two-year ballot box, I now
vote on numerous issues every single day. My phone shows me myriad ways
that the budget can be balanced. I check "b" and move on to the
propositions. *7:00:* My son Lexus e-calls to find out how I voted. We
generally disagree on everything. I tell him I voted "no" on the proposal
for government-supervised eugenics because I support the rights of parents
to choose. "But those moron Luddite kids are failing in school!" he
screeches. "They're so retarded that they can't do calculus in kindergarten!
Plus, they're crippled with near-sightedness and acne!" I interrupt. "You're
arguing about a tiny demographic," I counter. "Hardly anybody has kids

Six months since it launched, the world's first factory for making
professional-quality biological DNA 'parts' is beginning to stock its
shelves. More than 60 people — academic researchers, industry partners and
interested members of the community — joined the staff at the International
Open Facility Advancing Biotechnology (BIOFAB), at a meeting on 19 and 20
July to discuss the facility's progress so far and its aims over the next
few years. BIOFAB aims to supply synthetic biologists with a collection of
genetic parts that they can use in their experiments. Biological parts —
actually sequences of DNA — should have known and predictable functions, so
they can be inserted into cells to boost the production of a particular
protein, for example, or make it sensitive to a specific toxin. BIOFAB has
begun to add some early attempts at parts sequences to its registry. But
there is still some way to go before the fruits of BIOFAB's labours can be
useful to researchers, says Drew Endy, the facility's director and a
synthetic biologist at Stanford University in Palo Alto

There's a new televangelist soap opera. Reports this week suggest a
still-married Benny Hinn is now romantically involved with Paula White,
another television preacher with a colourful past. The 57-year-old Hinn, who
began his preaching career at a church hall near Yonge and Bloor Streets in
the 1970s, is best known for his faith-healing "Miracle Crusades" and his
half-hour television show, *This is Your Day*. White, 44, is the star of
television's *Paula White Today*, whose ministries reputedly pulled in $40
million in donations and sales of various goods in 2006. Her website's
current offerings include the four-CD set, "Creating Healthy Relationship"
in return for "any gift amount." Neither Hinn nor White could be reached for
comment Friday. In February, Hinn's wife Suzanne filed for divorce, citing
"irreconcilable differences." The two were at that point living apart. But
in a broadcast shortly after Suzanne filed for divorce, Hinn said it had
come as a "total shock." "The children and I never expected this to happen,"
he said. "Divorce was the last thing on my mind and theirs. "There was
absolutely no immorality involved in my life or in Suzanne's life, ever,"
Hinn continued. "We were totally committed to each other for 30 years of

For 70 years, a quixotic organisation called Federal Union has been
campaigning for a worldwide confederation. There is a whiff of benign 1930s
dottiness about its campaign: of handbills and sandals, Esperanto and
vegetarianism, decimalisation and naturism. You can't help warming to people
whose only real complaint against the EU is that it is insufficiently
ambitious, and that regional blocs are a potential obstacle to global
administration. Anyway, Federal Union has taken issue with my contention
that we should not have supported unwise banks with taxpayers' money.
Iceland, I pointed out, had been unable to bail out its financiers and,
while paper fortunes there were wiped out in consequence, nothing in the
real economy has changed very much. Crops are growing, wheels turn in
factories, traffic lights change, shops open. Indeed, when you look at the
government's total liabilities, Iceland is in a far happier situation than
the countries which assumed their banks' debts. Which perhaps explains why
Reykjavik looks and feels so counter-intuitively prosperous.

The food printer is at the concept design stage, and would work by storing
and refrigerating ingredients and then mixing them, cooking layers of the
mixture and printing them onto a serving tray. The concept design was
introduced by two graduate students at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) Fluid Interfaces Group Media Lab: designer/engineer in
algorithmic image process development Amit Zoran, and designer and research
assistant Marcelo Coelho. The food printing process begins with selecting
the required food canisters in which ingredients are stored and kept
refrigerated. Ingredients are then fed into a mixing chamber and the mixture
is extruded and deposited in layers of various and complex combinations of
ingredients. During deposition of the layers onto the serving tray the
ingredients are either cooked or cooled in the chamber or by heating/cooling
tubes attached to the printing head.

Military-funded research is already behind some of the most cutting-edge
regenerative science. Extreme projects, like bone-fusing cement and
muscle-growing cell scaffolds, are rolling into human trials thanks to a $12
million Pentagon grant earlier this year, and Darpa-funded scientists have
made rapid strides toward regrowing human limbs. But the military's not done
yet: The Office of the Secretary of Defense is soliciting small business
proposals for two new projects to transform the regeneration of damaged
tissue and cartilage, which afflict 85 percent of injured troops in Iraq and
Afghanistan. The first program would, if successful, replace skin grafting
that transplants tissue from one's own body, or a donor, to an injured area.
Instead, medics could use "an advanced topical delivery system" that spurs
the regeneration of damaged, degenerated tissue. Grafting poses plenty of
challenges, not the least of which is adequate supply — especially when, as
the solicitation notes, degenerated musculoskeletal tissues "represent the
most common cause of pain and disability worldwide." Skin grafts are also
vulnerable to rejection and infection.

Scientists have good reason to be weary of fanciful speculation over the
safety of their experiments, but some academics claim there are valuable
lessons to be learned from the LHC experience, ones that could save us from
more realistic catastrophes before the century is out. Nick Bostrom,
director of the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University, says that
advances in fields such as weapons technology, artificial intelligence and
synthetic biology (which has already given researchers the tools to create
viruses from scratch) could lead to what he calls "existential threats".
These are catastrophes that play out on an unprecedented scale, ones that
have the potential to bring an end to the human story, either by wiping us
out completely, or by "permanently and drastically destroying our
future potential". The creation of a lethal synthetic virus that kills on a
global scale is but one potential risk that Bostrom highlights.
Breakthroughs in physics could lead to new weapons that increase the dangers
of war, he says, while advances in computing could see the advent of
machines that can improve their own intelligence, and surpass that of
humans. Even attempts to manipulate the atmosphere to combat global warming
might backfire and trigger a global disaster.

Tisha B'Av and Sovereignty On The Temple Mount

All public transportation silenced, all restaurants closed in Jerusalem on
Monday evening as the sun set. The Hebrew day of great tragedies, Tisha
b'Av, fell at sundown. In remembrance, tens of thousands of Jews gathered at
the Western Wall to pray and petition the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel.
Tisha b'Av is simply Hebrew for the 9th day of the month of Av, and it
completes the Three Weeks of mourning that began with the Fast of Tammuz.
Many disasters have befallen the Jews on the 9th of Av throughout history.
According to Jewish tradition, this was the day that God told the Children
of Israel they were prohibited from entering the Promised Land because of
disbelief. They were forced to wander in the desert forty more years until
that adult generation had died out. That tragic day was just the beginning…
On the 9th of Av in:
*
586 BC, Solomon's Temple was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, and the
Babylonian captivity began;
*
AD 70, the Second Temple, which stood during Christ's ministry, was
destroyed by the Romans precisely as Jesus predicted in Luke 19;
*
AD 135, the famous Bar Kokhba revolt was squelched when Bethar, the
last Jewish stronghold, fell to the Romans;
*
AD 136, the Roman Emperor Hadrian established a heathen temple to
Jupiter on the site of the Jewish Temple. Hadrian rebuilt Jerusalem as a
pagan city, and renamed the land as Palestina, to distance its Jewish
heritage. The date when the Temple area was plowed under by the Romans was
the 9th of Av.
The day has continued to be associated with grief for the Jewish people
throughout history. For example, Pope Urban II declared the Crusades on the
9th of Av in 1242. The Jews were expelled from Spain in 1492 on this day,
and in 1942, the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto were mass deported to the
Treblinka extermination camp in Poland. Thus the 9th of Av, Tisha B'Av, has
become a symbol of all the persecutions and misfortunes of the Jewish
people, for the loss of their national independence and their sufferings in
exile. Above all, it is a day of intense mourning for the destruction of the
Temple.
The Temple Mount:
This week, Jews look toward the Temple Mount with even more longing than
normal. Israel has technically controlled the Temple Mount since the Six-Day
War in 1967, but the Waqf, a Muslim council, manages the site, which is
noticeably dominated by the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.
Israeli law is supposed to protect free access to the site, but the Israeli
government enforces a ban on any non-Muslim prayer on the Temple Mount in
order to avoid Muslim riots. Tuesday morning three Jews were removed from
the area after allegedly "trying to cause a provocation" (which could have
just included praying there), and the Temple Mount was closed to visitors at
11am.
But while Israel enforces the prayer ban and the Waqf's oversight, there is
still a deeply felt belief in the Knesset that Israel has greater legitimate
rights to the Temple Mount than do the Muslims. In the Knesset on the 9th of
Av a year ago, Dr. Mordechai Keidar commented on the lack of a Palestinian
connection to the Temple Mount, saying:
"Jerusalem does not appear in the Koran, not even once, not even in any
one of the four different names the city has in Arabic. The struggle for
Jerusalem is not territorial, it's theological. Is Judaism still a relevant
religion, or do we give in to the Muslim claim that Judaism is no longer
relevant? And that's why we heard from PA official Saeb Erekat not long ago
that they will not recognize the State of Israel as a Jewish state even in
1000 years. Why is this? Because Judaism in their eyes is irrelevant, so how
could a Jewish state be founded?"
Keidar also noted that the Palestinians are not moderate on the issue of
Jerusalem and the Temple Mount, but claim it as their own. He held up a PLO
traditional garment, which bore the words, "Jerusalem is ours."
Tuesday, Likud party lawmaker Danny Danon toured the Temple Mount with an
armed police escort. "There is full religious freedom for Jews and Muslims
on the Temple Mount," Danon said. "But it is more difficult for the Jew than
the Muslim to go and pray on the Temple Mount. This is a distortion that
must be corrected." He added, "If Jews want to go and pray on the Temple
Mount then they should be allowed to do it."
Not all Jews want people flooding the Temple Mount, however. Nobody is
certain exactly where the Holy of Holies was located, and these faithful
Jews do not want the unwitting visitor to tread on that spot. Worshipers
must first be cleansed with the ashes of the red heifer, as required in
Numbers 19, before Jews can worship freely in the Temple area.
East Jerusalem and the Temple Mount have been points of major contention in
past efforts to negotiate a two-state agreement. The Palestinians want East
Jerusalem, and the Jews do not want to give up this location that is so
precious to Judaism. The world would never expect the Muslims to hand over
control of the Kaaba in Mecca in order to keep peace, but the Jews are not
free to worship on their holiest site because they fear Muslim violence.
A Day of Mourning.... And Future Joy
Tisha b'Av is indeed a day of mourning. It is marked with sadness and
fasting from food and drink. Observant Jews avoid bathing or washing
clothes or enjoying entertainment like music or movies, and the Book of
Lamentations is traditionally read both in the evening and during the day.
On this day the Jews are reminded of their tragic history.
Yet, this day is also expressly linked with Israel's glorious destiny. The
Jews also look forward to the ultimate rebuilding of the Temple, to a time
when Tisha b'Av will become a day of joy and gladness (as it was foretold in
Zechariah 8:19).
We do know that the Temple will be rebuilt because Jesus, John, and Paul all
make reference to it (Matt 24:15; Rev 11:1, 2; 2 Thess 2:4). But we also
know that this Temple will be desecrated by the Coming World Leader when he
sets himself up to be worshiped (2 Thess 2:3-4). It is possible this
prophetic event will also take place on Tisha b'Av - and may happen in the
not-too-distant future.

Parts I and II of this series of articles identified some toxic substances
found in common foods and medicines and described some of their effects on
the human brain. The main culprits discussed were aspartame, mercury,
fluoride and high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). Whether these substances
disturb the nervous system, decrease cognitive function, impair judgment, or
affect the memory, the net result is the general dumbing down of society.
All is not doom and gloom, however. Nature, with its wonderful tendency to
restore equilibrium, provides us humans the cure to almost any affliction we
might develop. Ancient healers even believed that nature helped humans
discover the cure to their illnesses in subtle and mysterious ways:

So, after dwelling in the awful world of poisonous chemicals and corrupted
officials, the only fitting way to conclude this series of articles is to
explore the all-natural ways to restore health.
Stop the Toxicification

are in need of a serious detox program, please consult a professional.*
The first step in ridding your body from poisons is, quite logically, to
stop ingesting poisons. It sounds simple enough, but this step is probably
the most difficult, as many toxins are found in everyday foods and even tap
water. An increased vigilance is necessary in everyday life and, sometimes,
some annoying actions must be taken to keep the toxins out of your body.
Nevertheless, once you actually feel your body and mind healing, you'll be
proud of your efforts.
Before we look at the ways to avoid specific toxins, here are some general
guidelines any health-conscious person should apply at all times: Avoid
processed foods and artificial drinks. Instead, look for organic and locally
grown produce or, even better, grow your own fruits, vegetables and herbs.
By doing so, you automatically avoid many harmful substances, including MSG,
HFCS, pesticides, sodium fluoride and mercury. You also save money, which is
always nice. When buying groceries, always read the labels and, as they say,
if you can't read it, don't eat it.
Here are specific ways to avoid particular toxins:
Avoiding Fluoride
There are two types of fluoride: calcium fluoride and sodium fluoride.
Calcium fluoride is naturally found in water sources, while sodium fluoride
is a synthetic waste product of the nuclear, aluminum, and phosphate
fertilizer industries. Guess which type is found in our water? Right, the
nasty one. Regular water filters such as Brita do a good job in reducing the
* taste *of metals and chemicals in the water but they *do not* filter out
the fluoride. Purifying the water through reverse osmosis is the most
effective way to remove sodium fluoride from water.

Some processed foods also contain high concentrations of sodium fluoride,
including instant tea, grape juice products, and soy milk for babies, so
once again, avoid processed foods. Also, switch to a fluoride-free
toothpaste (or at least try not to swallow the $0.93 Colgate you bought at
Walmart).
Consuming foods rich in calcium and magnesium help prevent fluoride
intoxication, as they prevent the poison from attaching to the body.

Avoiding Mercury
First, if you or your children are being vaccinated, always request a
Thimerosal-free shot. Second, avoid fish and seafood with high mercury
levels; fish with the highest levels of mercury are marlin, orange roughy,
shark, swordfish, tilefish and tuna (ahi, albacore and Yellowfin). Some
seafood has low mercury levels, making them safer to consume, including
anchovies, catfish, clam, crab, shrimp, flounder, salmon, sardine, tilapia
and trout. As rule of thumb, bigger fish contain more mercury since they eat
smaller fish and absorb all their mercury, and live longer, allowing mercury
to build up.

Avoiding Aspartame
Always read labels and avoid "sugar-free" products. Aspartame is found in
soft drinks, over-the-counter drugs & prescription drugs (very common,
listed under "inactive ingredients"), vitamin & herb supplements, yogurt,
candy, breath mints, cereals, sugar-free chewing gum, cocoa mixes, coffee
beverages, instant breakfasts, gelatin desserts, frozen desserts, juice
beverages, laxatives, milk drinks, shake mixes, tabletop sweeteners, tea
beverages, instant teas and coffees, topping mixes and wine coolers.
Avoiding HFCS
Read the labels and if you find *high fructose corn syrup* at the top the
list of ingredients, tell the product "oh no you didn't!", snap your fingers
with attitude and put it back on the shelf. Ignore the confused looks of
other shoppers.
We will now look at some all-natural ways to detox the body from harmful
substances.
Cilantro

The standard procedure for removing heavy metals from the body is called
"chelation." It is accomplished by administering a chelating agent –
usually dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) – that binds to the heavy metals in
the body and cause them to be naturally flushed out. This type of treatment
is quite strenuous, has many side-effects and should be undertaken only with
medical supervision.
If, however, you believe that ridding the body of a harsh substance with
another harsh substance might be self-defeating, I tend to agree with you.
Fortunately there are herbs and spices that naturally act as chelating
agents: Cilantro does a great job at it.
The most widely used and loved herbs and spices worldwide are derived from
the same plant, Coriandrum sativum. The leaves of this plant are frequently

were given olive oil instead.
- A study by Aberdeen University, led by professor Lawrence Whalley,
found that fish oil helps the brain to work faster, increases IQ scores and
slows down the aging process.

that fish oil improves behaviour, concentration and learning in the

Malaysia's Mahathir Mohamad has once again stated that the September 11
attacks were a staged event, rejecting claims that his comments are a
publicity stunt.
"What do I gain from a publicity stunt? I am merely going by a public
statement. I am not going to be a Prime Minister anymore unless you
(pointing to a journalist) want me to …" the former Malaysian prime minister
told reporters on Friday.
After watching a three-hour video of the attack on the World Trade Center
buildings, Mohamad, had suggested earlier in his blog that the twin towers
had collapsed "demolition style."
Later on Friday, Mahathir also called on local television stations to show
the three-hour video.
"It sounds logical to me. Until today, you cannot even find scraps of the
plane that crashed into the World Trade Centre and there is no picture of
the other plane, which was supposed to crash."
"The way the tower came crashing down was also funny. People who saw it were
also not ordinary people. They were professional engineers and what they say
is quite credible."
"I wish some television stations would consent to show the video as it is
not long and only three hours. You can then see what I saw."
Mahathir also said some people were afraid of saying anything critical about
the governments of powerful countries or accusing them of doing something
wrong.
"But the government of powerful countries said lies to go to war," he added
"I have great respect for the Arabs but for them to hijack four planes is
not very Arab. Just imagine the amount of planning that would be involved."

stressed that he was "being more sensitive to the victims" as he was saying

attracting foreign investment.
"I have said this many times even when I was the prime minister. But we
still have the foreign direct investment. However, we cannot rely on foreign
direct investments alone. We must build on our own system," he said.
Mahathir made the comments at a debut held for a book titled Civilizations,
Nomadic Migrations, Empires and The Trail of Islam, at the Islamic Arts
Museum in Kuala Lumpur.

Now, let us return to our featured article to remind ourselves how the
Constitution set up the division of power between states and the Federal
Government.

If you have a feeling of 'deja vue" over this Afghanistan situation, you are
very observant. During the past few years, we have been subjected to the
same kind of conversation regarding whether or not Iraqi forces are capable
of taking over internal security. During the last couple of years of the
Vietnam War, we heard the same kind of debate. It took two full years to
develop, but when the North Vietnamese attacked the South, that country fell
like a house of cards. Right then and right there, all that debate over
whether South Vietnamese forces could provide adequate security was rendered
most useless.
The same situation is developing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Neither country
will be able to withstand the onslaught of the insurgency once Coalition
Forces are withdrawn. History is repeating itself!

believed to be specialist Brad Manning -- last May who claimed to be an Army
intelligence analyst with access to classified networks that showed
'incredible things, awful things... that belong in the public domain'."
What kinds of things could be so awful that an Army specialist would risk
jail time in order to divulge?
"The more than 90,000 reports published online reveal six years of
classified information, offering a blunt and dire view of American military
efforts in Afghanistan ... The 'war logs' offer startling detail about
everything from civilian casualties to enemy missile strikes. They also
reveal detailed reports that Pakistan's military spy agency, ISI, is guiding
the very insurgent network in Afghanistan that the Americans are trying to
defeat..."
These papers, as they continue to come to public domain, are likely to
verify the warnings about the war in Afghanistan and Iraq that we have been
issuing for the past nine years. American military brutality and its
difficulty in defeating an insurgent enemy are likely to be the focus of
these leaked reports.
Could these leaked papers have the same effect on public opinion as the
"Pentagon Papers" of 1971? I remember these leaked papers very well, as it
truly turned public opinion against the war effort. The most important fact
which was uncovered was that top American officials lied a lot to the people
in order to justify this worthless war.

'demonstrated, among other things, that the Johnson Administration had
systematically lied, not only to the public but also to Congress, about a
subject of transcendent national interest and significance'."

AN INVENTED TALE [Excerpts]
Every now and then you hear calls from critics of Islam for Islam to reform
itself--for mosques and madrassas to teach against the Islamic doctrines
that inspire terrorists. A dramatic example of this demand occurs in the
film Fitna when Geert Wilders invites Muslims to tear the offending pages
out of the Koran. In one scene you can hear the sound of tearing pages in
the background.
If thy page offend thee, pluck it out? The only trouble with this sort of
recommendation is that it assumes that there is enough positive material in
the Koran and other foundational documents to form the basics for a
reformation. But is there?
According to Moorthy Muthuswamy, an expert on political Islam, "61 percent
of the Koran talks ill of unbelievers or calls for their violent conquest
and subjugation, but only 2.6 percent talks about the overall good of
humanity." Hmmm. Seems as though that would amount to an awful lot of
offending pages.
It's a similar story when you turn to the sira, the biographies of Muhammad.
Take the earliest of these, the one written by Ibn Ishaq. Of the 130 short
chapters which detail the life of Muhammad after his arrival in Medina, over
70 are about raids, battles, and assassinations or else they are about
preparations for raids and battles, division of spoils, odes upon battles,
names of those who fought, etc. According to a content analysis done by Bill
Warner of the Center for the Study of Political Islam, at least 75% of the
sira is about jihad. These are inconvenient facts for those who hope Islam
can be reformed. No matter how reform-minded you may be, it is difficult to
come up with a symbolic interpretation of the Koran's numerous calls to make
war on unbelievers, since that was literally what Muhammad did.
So, rather than encourage Muslims to remove the violent and hateful parts of
the Koran, it might make more sense to encourage them to renounce it in
toto. The "good" parts of the Koran are so bound up with the "bad" parts
that trying to separate them is an impossible task. Besides, there is no
warrant in Islamic tradition for picking and choosing. Islamic authorities
say that the Koran given to Muhammad is a replica of the original which is
inscribed on "imperishable" tablets in heaven. And, just for the record,
"imperishable" beats "set in stone" by a wide margin. Talking of reforming
Islam by re-interpreting the Koran is like talking about reforming a marble
statue. Some things don't lend themselves to reformation.
