A RIGHT REACTION - Judges 6:31 NIV
But Joash replied to the hostile crowd around him, "Are you going to plead
Baal's cause? Are you trying to save him? Whoever fights for him shall be
put to death by morning! If Baal really is a god, he can defend himself when
someone breaks down his altar."
Joash, Gideon's father, had a much different reaction to the destruction of
the altar and the Asherah. Instead of wanting to kill Gideon like the other
men of the city (v.30), Joash realized that Baal was not really a god. If
Baal was a real god, then his altar would never have been torn down. If he
was a god, he didn't need anyone to punish those who had torn down his
altar. He could punish whoever did the act himself. And, of course,
nothing happened to Gideon.
You have a wonderful job. You're successful. You have what you think is a
pretty good marriage. Everything in your life is centered on these two
things - your job and your spouse. Then one morning you wake up, and your
spouse is gone either through divorce or death. Not long after, your job is
gone, too. You're alone and broke. Your "gods" have failed you. Will you
be like the men of the city, wanting to lash out and destroy those who have
hurt you, blaming everyone and everything you can for the destruction of
your gods? Or will you be like Joash, and realize the worthlessness of the
things you have been worshipping?
Examine yourself today. Who (or what) is truly the center of your worship?
