JULY 23, 2010
MEMORIAL, ST. BRIDGET OF SWEDEN, RELIGIOUS
FRIDAY 16TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

JEREMIAH 3:14-17
"Come back, disloyal children, Yahweh declares, for I alone am your
Master, and I will take you, one from a town, two from a family, and
bring you to Zion. I shall give you shepherds after my own heart, who
will pasture you wisely and discreetly. Then, when you have increased
and grown numerous in the country, Yahweh declares, no one will ever
again say: The ark of the covenant of Yahweh! It will not enter their
minds, they will not remember it or miss it, nor will another one be
made. When that time comes, Jerusalem will be called: The Throne of
Yahweh, and all the nations will converge on her, on Yahweh's name, on
Jerusalem, and will no longer follow their own stubborn and wicked
inclinations.

MATTHEW 13:18-23
'So pay attention to the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the
word of the kingdom without understanding, the Evil One comes and
carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the seed sown on the
edge of the path. The seed sown on patches of rock is someone who
hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But such a person has
no root deep down and does not last; should some trial come, or some
persecution on account of the word, at once he falls away. The seed
sown in thorns is someone who hears the word, but the worry of the
world and the lure of riches choke the word and so it produces
nothing. And the seed sown in rich soil is someone who hears the word
and understands it; this is the one who yields a harvest and produces
now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.'

REFLECTION
Today's first reading from Jeremiah shows what the Lord offers the
Israelites, if they will only obey his commands and turn from their
evil ways. The Lord invites Israel to believe and trust in the Lord so
that they no longer need the external sign of the Ark of the Covenant.
It will be evident from how they live that they are the throne of the
Lord. This is not due to what they have, but who they are. They will
become a people of good soil for the seed of the Lord to take root.

Becoming good soil for the seed of the Lord is the theme of today's
gospel. For us to truly believe and bear the fruit of Christ, we must
allow the Word of the Lord and the experience of Christ in prayer lead
us. We must create in us the fertile soil in which Christ's seed can
take root. Are we preparing our soil? Do we let the Word of God guide
our daily actions and prayers so that we can move closer to God? Or
are we like the rocky soil where the Word excites and energizes us but
falls away as soon as other cares or concerns get in the way? Do we
become so involved with the concerns of our lives that we forget about
what it means to truly Love?
