comes from a new United Nations report released over a week ago calling for
the abandonment of the U.S. Dollar as the main global reserve currency. What
would replace the U.S. Dollar to serve this function? The answer is that no
existing currency would be able to fill that gap. Even the Euro which may
have been a viable alternative a few years ago would currently not be
sufficient considering the horrendous economic problems of European

I have previously noted, Corexit is toxic, is less effective than other
dispersants, and is actually worsening the damage caused by the oil spill.
Now, two toxicologists are saying that Corexit is much more harmful to human
health and marine life than we've been told. Specifically Gulf toxicologist
Dr. Susan Shaw – Founder and Director of the Marine Environmental Research
Institute – dove into the oil spill to examine the chemicals present. Dr.
Shaw told CNN: If I can tell you what happens — because I was in the oil —
to people… Shrimpers throwing their nets into water… [then] water from the
nets splashed on his skin. [He experienced a] headache that lasted 3 weeks…
heart palpitations… muscle spasms… bleeding from the rectum… And that's what
that Corexit does, it ruptures red blood cells, causes internal bleeding,
and liver and kidney damage. … This stuff is so toxic combined… not the oil
or dispersants alone. … Very, very toxic and goes right through skin.

better assess the effect of methane on global climate change. Naturally
occurring methane seeps have been linked to rapid climate change. For
instance, an event occurring 55 million years ago may have caused one of
these spikes, scientists believe. This event, the Late Paleocene Thermal
Maximum (LPTM), lasted about 100,000 years. Large undersea methane caused
explosions and mass extinctions. So the Deepwater Horizon environmental
disaster may, at least, help scientists better understand and perhaps
predict methane effects on global temperatures.

"And biting is sort of an extension of the hickey. It's that same thing

has been biting his girlfriend on and off for about a year. "For me, biting
is the way to show affection toward the other person and to just get a crazy

transformation Monday, adopting a more "forward-looking" logo called "The
Y." "We are changing how we talk about ourselves so that people better
understand the benefits of engaging with the Y," said Kate Coleman, senior
vice president and chief marketing officer of the YMCA of the USA, in a
press release for the brand change. "We are simplifying how we describe the
programs we offer so that it is immediately apparent that everything we do
is designed to nurture that potential of children and teens, improve health
and well-being and support our neighbors and the large community," she said.
The YMCA was founded in 1844 in London. It was named the "Young Men's
Christian Association" and sought to create healthy social conditions for
young men during the Industrial Revolution. The parallel YWCA for women also
dates back to the 19th century, and the YMCA began admitting women in its
programs at the end of World War II.

Jerusalem was part of the monthly "March around Old City Temple Gates," a
colorful event featuring the recital of Psalms at various closed gates
around the Temple Mount. The monthly march usually attracts 2,000-3,000
people, but organizers successfully brought out thousands more Monday night
as Jews around the world marked the beginning of the Hebrew month of Av. The
Ninth of Av is marked every year as the day when foreign invaders destroyed
the First and Second Holy Temples. The marches feature music and dancing and
are peaceful, but police have barred several of the monthly prayer
rallies during the past year because of fears of Arab violence.

The UK's Royal Society is launching a major study into human population
growth and how it may affect social and economic development in coming
decades. The world's population has risen from two billion in 1930 to 6.8
billion now, with nine billion projected by 2050. The society acknowledges
it is delving into a hugely controversial area, but says a comprehensive and
scientific review of the evidence is needed. It is led by Nobel laureate Sir
John Sulston of Human Genome Project fame. "This is a topic that has gone to
and fro in the last few decades, and appears to be moving back up the
political agenda now," he told BBC News. "So it seems a good moment for the
Royal Society to launch a study that looks objectively at the scientific
basis for changes in population, for the different regional and cultural
factors that may affect that, and at the effects that population changes
will have on our future in term of sustainable development." The burgeoning
human population is acknowledged as one of the underlying causes of
environmental issues such as climate change, deforestation, depletion of

will propose allowing pro-GM states such as Spain and the Netherlands to
increase production, while also allowing others such as Germany and Austria
to maintain restrictions. The rare instance of Brussels handing back power
to individual nations will likely present Britain's government with a
delicate decision; caught between a robust GM industry lobby and a vocal
protest movement. While making it easier for states to ban GM crops, giving

valid birth certificate." Such claims about Obama's birth certificate have
been discredited. But with the crowd applauding the question, Vitter
responded that although he doesn't personally have legal standing to bring
litigation, he supports "conservative legal organizations and others who
would bring that to court," according to a video of the event. "I think that
is the valid and most possibly effective grounds to do it," Vitter said,
although he later cautioned that the matter could distract from policy
issues. "I think if we focus on that issue and let our eye off the ball ...
I think that's a big mistake," he said. "I'm not dismissing any of this. I
think first and foremost, we need to fight the Obama agenda at the ballot

state's tough new immigration law requiring state and local police to ask ID

"What is interesting here is that Americans are on the side of Arizona and

Harvard professor and prolific author Niall Ferguson opened the 2010 Aspen
Ideas Festival Monday with a stark warning about the increasing prospect of
the American "empire" suddenly collapsing due to the country's rising debt
level. "I think this is a problem that is going to go live really soon,"
Ferguson said. "In that sense, I mean within the next two years. Because the
whole thing, fiscally and other ways, is very near the edge of chaos. And
we've seen already in Greece what happens when the bond market loses faith
in your fiscal policy." Ferguson said empires — such as the former Soviet
Union and the Roman empire — can collapse quite quickly and the tipping
point is often when the cost of servicing an empire's debt is larger than
the cost of its defense budget. "That has not been the case I think at any
point in U.S. history," Ferguson said. "It will be the case in the next five
years." Ferguson was conscious of opening the Ideas Festival on such a stark
note. "Walter Isaacson, the leader of this great institution said, 'Don't be
too dark!,'" Ferguson said. The affable British scholar tried to keep it
light. He used a stage whisper to tell the Aspen Institute audience, "I know
you're not comfortable with the word 'empire,' especially just after the
Fourth of July, but you are the Redcoats now." He said the U.S. is now
deeply in the red as a country because of a combination of the Great
Recession, Obama's federal stimulus and financial bailout programs, two
wars, the Bush tax cuts, and a growth in social entitlement programs.

Opposition to new full-body imaging machines to screen passengers and the
government's deployment of them at most major airports is growing.
Many frequent fliers complain they're time-consuming or invade their
privacy. The world's airlines say they shouldn't be used for primary
security screening. And questions are being raised about possible effects on
passengers' health.
"The system takes three to five times as long as walking through a metal
detector," says Phil Bush of Atlanta, one of many fliers on USA TODAY's Road
Warriors panel who oppose the machines. "This looks to be yet another
disaster waiting to happen."
BODY SCANNERS: Concerns about privacy and health set off debate
The machines — dubbed by some fliers as virtual strip searches — were
installed at many airports in March after a Christmas Day airline bombing
attempt. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has spent more
than $80 million for about 500 machines, including 133 now at airports. It
plans to install about 1,000 by the end of next year.
The machines are running into complaints and questions here and overseas:
•The International Air Transport Association, which represents 250 of the
world's airlines, including major U.S. carriers, says the TSA lacks "a
strategy and a vision" of how the machines fit into a comprehensive
checkpoint security plan. "The TSA is putting the cart before the horse,"
association spokesman Steve Lott says.
•Security officials in Dubai said this month they wouldn't use the machines
because they violate "personal privacy," and information about their "side
effects" on health isn't known.
•Last month, the European Commission said in a report that "a rigorous
scientific assessment" of potential health risks is needed before machines
are deployed there. It also said screening methods besides the new machines
should be used on pregnant women, babies, children and people with
disabilities.
The U.S. Government Accountability Office said in October that the TSA was
deploying the machines without fully testing them and assessing whether they
could detect "threat items" concealed on various parts of the body. And in
March, the office said it "remains unclear" whether they would have detected
the explosives that police allege Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to
detonate on a jet bound for Detroit on Christmas.
TSA spokeswoman Kristin Lee says the agency completed testing at the end of
last year and is "highly confident" in the machines' detection capability.
She also says their use hasn't slowed screening at airports and that the
agency has taken steps to ensure privacy and safety.
The TSA is deploying two types of machines that can see underneath clothing.
One uses a high-speed X-ray beam, and the other bounces electromagnetic
waves off a passenger's body.
Passengers can refuse screening by the machines and receive a pat-down
search by a security officer, screening by a metal detector, or both, the
TSA says.
