JULY 27, 2010
TUESDAY 17TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II
JEREMIAH 14:17-22
'So say this word to them: May my eyes shed tears night and day,
unceasingly, since the daughter of my people has sustained a fearsome
wound, a crippling injury. If I go into the countryside, there lie
those killed by the sword; if I go into the city, I see people
tortured with hunger; even prophets and priests roam the country at
their wits' end.' Have you rejected Judah altogether? Does your very
soul revolt at Zion? Why have you struck us down without hope of cure?
We were hoping for peace -- no good came of it! For the moment of cure
-- nothing but terror! Yahweh, we acknowledge our wickedness and our
ancestors' guilt: we have indeed sinned against you. For your name's
sake do not reject us, do not dishonour the throne of your glory.
Remember us; do not break your covenant with us. Can any of the
nations' Futile Ones make it rain? Can the heavens of their own accord
give showers? Are you not the one, Yahweh our God? In you is our hope,
since you make all these things.
MATTHEW 13:35-43
This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet: I will speak to
you in parables, unfold what has been hidden since the foundation of
the world. Then, leaving the crowds, he went to the house; and his
disciples came to him and said, 'Explain to us the parable about the
darnel in the field.' He said in reply, 'The sower of the good seed is
the Son of man. The field is the world; the good seed is the subjects
of the kingdom; the darnel, the subjects of the Evil One; the enemy
who sowed it, the devil; the harvest is the end of the world; the
reapers are the angels. Well then, just as the darnel is gathered up
and burnt in the fire, so it will be at the end of time. The Son of
man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all
causes of falling and all who do evil, and throw them into the blazing
furnace, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth. Then the
upright will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Anyone
who has ears should listen!
REFLECTION
The parable in today's gospel concerns the problem of good and evil,
and how God allows them both to exist. But eventually they must be
separated. Harvest time is the time of decision, the time of judgment,
when good must be separated from evil. Can we take an extremely simple
view of this and say that the wheat are the good people, and the weeds
the bad people? Is this in line with most of our experience?
We know that there is no such thing as the all-good person and the
all-bad person. We have only to look at ourselves and those around us
to see that each one of us is wheat and weeds, good and evil. Sooner
or later, before we can enjoy true happiness and the reward of heaven,
all the evil in us must be cast off and burned.
Weeds grow in a garden that is neglected. The weeds of which Christ
speaks are those evils that grow in a neglected soul. One other
reality we see: many of us, do not complete this weeding out process
before God calls us and tells us: "Your time is up." Hence there is
the urgent need for good works on our part, the need to accomplish on
earth as much of this purification as we can before God calls us.
One way is by doing good to others. God made us to help one another.
So let us try to be more generous, more loving and less selfish
towards others. Let us also pray for our neighbor. The life we save
may be our own. "Lord, as we return to you, heal our hearts and renew
our lives.
