14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – C

ISAIAH 66:10-14
Rejoice with Jerusalem, be glad for her, all you who love her!
Rejoice, rejoice with her, all you who mourned her! So that you may be
suckled and satisfied from her consoling breast, so that you may drink
deep with delight from her generous nipple. For Yahweh says this:
Look, I am going to send peace flowing over her like a river, and like
a stream in spate the glory of the nations. You will be suckled,
carried on her hip and fondled in her lap. As a mother comforts a
child, so I shall comfort you; you will be comforted in Jerusalem. At
the sight your heart will rejoice, and your limbs regain vigour like
the grass. To his servants Yahweh will reveal his hand, but to his
enemies his fury.

GALATIANS 6:14-18
But as for me, it is out of the question that I should boast at all,
except of the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world
has been crucified to me, and I to the world. It is not being
circumcised or uncircumcised that matters; but what matters is a new
creation. Peace and mercy to all who follow this as their rule and to
the Israel of God. After this, let no one trouble me; I carry branded
on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be
with your spirit, my brothers. Amen.

LUKE 10:1-9
After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them out
ahead of him in pairs, to all the towns and places he himself would be
visiting. And he said to them, 'The harvest is rich but the labourers
are few, so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers to do his
harvesting. Start off now, but look, I am sending you out like lambs
among wolves. Take no purse with you, no haversack, no sandals. Salute
no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, let your first words be,
"Peace to this house!" And if a man of peace lives there, your peace
will go and rest on him; if not, it will come back to you. Stay in the
same house, taking what food and drink they have to offer, for the
labourer deserves his wages; do not move from house to house. Whenever
you go into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put before
you. Cure those in it who are sick, and say, "The kingdom of God is
very near to you."

REFLECTION
Traveling in the time of Jesus was both dangerous and difficult. Roads
were not paved. Street lights were nonexistent. Bandits waited for the
next victim. The trust level for the basic traveler was not very high.
Our gospel reading no doubt caused trouble for Jesus and we moderns as
well. Consider this: "Do not carry a walking staff or traveling bag;
wear no sandals and greet no one along the way." Is Jesus serious? Who
is going to provide for the needs of the seventy-two disciples?

Jesus is challenging us to trust. The disciples are to trust the
providence of God and the generosity of the people to whom they
preach. Jesus does not merely preach the reign of God, but challenges
his disciples to live its reality. That is, God is at work in our head
and hear t. He does not abandon his people. The same good and caring
God who liberated Israel from Egypt will provide for our needs. God
does not forget. We can be confident and trusting.

God's love is like a nurturing mother whose love is faithful and life-
giving. It is abundant and everlasting. Jesus is not advocating
imprudence or presumption. He is challenging us to trust in God's
abiding love. The disciples must also learn to trust in the generosity
of the community. The Christian life is not for loners. We are
interdependent. Jesus sends his disciples out in pairs to rely on the
hospitality offered by the local community. They are to be satisfied
with what is offered.

The disciples and the local community share in the work of the kingdom
of God. Each has their own ministry and their part to play. The
disciples are to impart peace to those who show hospitality. They are
to cure the sick and preach the word of God. They lovingly work
together for God's kingdom. The bottom line is this: we can trust
others because we trust God. God can be relied upon to bring life from
death, hope in the face of despair and grace in greater abundance than
sin.

The world encourages us to be self-reliant and in total control. We
are to pull our own strings and be suspicious of others. The helping
hands should be our own hands. Such is not the case with the disciples
of Jesus. The Christian is not consumed by worldly cares and
anxieties. Even dangerous traveling for the Lord does not cause panic.
In the words of St. Paul: "All that matters is that one is created
anew."

Let us go with trust in God and one another. Let us extend hospitality
to all in need. Let us help with the spiritual and material needs of
others. In so doing, we can rejoice because we too are finding our way
to God.

SATURDAY 13TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

EPHESIANS 2:19-22
So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors; you are fellow-
citizens with the holy people of God and part of God's household. You
are built upon the foundations of the apostles and prophets, and
Christ Jesus himself is the cornerstone. Every structure knit together
in him grows into a holy temple in the Lord; and you too, in him, are
being built up into a dwelling-place of God in the Spirit.

JOHN 20:24-29
Thomas, called the Twin, who was one of the Twelve, was not with them
when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, 'We have seen the
Lord,' but he answered, 'Unless I can see the holes that the nails
made in his hands and can put my finger into the holes they made, and
unless I can put my hand into his side, I refuse to believe.' Eight
days later the disciples were in the house again and Thomas was with
them. The doors were closed, but Jesus came in and stood among them.
'Peace be with you,' he said. Then he spoke to Thomas, 'Put your
finger here; look, here are my hands. Give me your hand; put it into
my side. Do not be unbelieving any more but believe.' Thomas replied,
'My Lord and my God!' Jesus said to him: You believe because you can
see me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.

REFLECTION
The apostles knew how he suffered and died. Jesus himself told them
that he would overcome death after his mission for mankind's
redemption has been fulfilled.

And yet, they doubted. Who wouldn't? How many of the apostles believed
the women when they first reported the very extraordinary event? Would
they have voiced what Thomas asked had they not seen Christ for
themselves? Would we have reacted the same way?

We are truly blessed when we are finally able to go beyond our fears,
insecurities and attachments and accept completely God's love for us.

Let us break free from selfishness and doubt and surrender to him,
confident with the knowledge that he is indeed "Our Lord and Our God."
