* Make Friends Of Enemies*

*PROVERBS 25:21-22 LB
21-22 If your enemy is hungry, give him food! If he is thirsty,
give him something to drink! This will make him feel ashamed of
himself, and God will reward you.*

*Why would anyone want to be an enemy of someone who treated
them well?*

*Your actions should cause your enemy to reconsider being your
enemy.*

*When you treat your enemies well, not only do you have a good
chance of making them friends, but also God will reward you.*

*ROMANS 12:19-21 LB
19 Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God,
for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. [Don't
take the law into your own hands.]
20 Instead, feed your enemy if he is hungry. If he is thirsty
give him something to drink and you will be "heaping coals of
fire on his head." In other words, he will feel ashamed of
himself for what he has done to you.
21 Don't let evil get the upper hand, but conquer evil by doing
good.*

*The way to turn an enemy into a friend is to treat them in a
friendly manner.*

*This is God's plan. It should be your plan, too.*

*SAY THIS: Treat enemies like friends and you won't have any
enemies.*

*The Fear of the Lord brings Wisdom and Life! *
*

For thy name's sake, O LORD,
pardon mine iniquity;
for it is great.

What man is he that feareth the LORD?
him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.

His soul shall dwell at ease;
and his seed shall inherit the earth.

Psalm 25:11-13 KJV

________________

If thou seekest her (Wisdom) as silver,
and searchest for her as for hid treasures;

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD,
and find the knowledge of God.

For the LORD giveth wisdom:
out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Proverbs 2:4-6 KJV

________________

Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still;
teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning.

"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

For through me your days will be many,
and years will be added to your life.

Proverbs 9:9-11 NIV

________________

Thanks be unto God for His wonderful gift:
Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God
is the object of our faith; the only faith that
saves is faith in Him.

THE BELIEVER'S TENT

Genesis 2:7
Then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being

Biblically, life means to unite and death means to separate . When Adam
became a living being, his soul was in union with his body. When he died,
his soul separated from his body.

As long as you are alive, your soul is united with your body. But when that
separation occurs, you do not cease to exist. Paul said that to be absent
from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). Your
primary identity is not found in your physical existence. Paul said, "From
now on we recognize no man according to the flesh" (2 Corinthians 5:16).

Even though your principal identity is more than physical, in this temporal
life you cannot function without your physical body. Your immaterial self
needs your material self, and vice versa. You need your physical brain to
control your movements and responses, and you need your immaterial mind to
reason and make value judgments. Your brain is like a computer and your
mind is the programmer. The finest human brain can't accomplish anything in
a corpse which lacks a mind. And the most brilliant mind cannot function in
a brain damaged by Alzheimer's disease.

In 2 Corinthians 5:1-4 Paul referred to the believer's body as a tent, the
temporary dwelling place of the soul. Using his illustration, I must
confess that my tent pegs are coming up, my poles are sagging, and my seams
are becoming frayed! At my age I'm just glad that there's more to me than
the disposable earth suit I walk around in.

You don't exist for your body; it exists for you. That's why Paul said, "I
beat my body and make it my slave" (1 Corinthians 9:27 NIV ). In order to
fulfill your purpose for being here, you need to manage your body well
through exercise, balanced diet and adequate rest.

Prayer: Lord, help me to not overemphasize or underemphasize the
significance of my physical life but stay in step with Your view.

*Daily Devotional
*Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based on the book of
Proverbs in the Bible. * * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:*

*Proverbs 21:28-29 (KJV):
**28 A false witness shall perish: but the man that heareth speaketh
constantly.
29 A wicked man hardeneth his face: but as for the upright, he directeth
his way.
**
**Proverbs 21:28-29 (AMP):
**28 A false witness will perish, but the word of a man who hears
attentively will endure and go unchallenged.
29 A wicked man puts on the bold, unfeeling face (of guilt), but as for the
upright, he considers, directs, and establishes his way (with the
confidence of integrity).*

*Thoughts for the Day:*

Throughout the book of *Proverbs,* we continue to find comparisons between
the wicked and the upright, and in these scriptures we are told the wicked
person will perish, while the upright man will endure and be established in
his society. *Verse 28* tells us that every day we are given choices to
speak and also to keep quiet. A man that listens to the wisdom of God
attentively will endure, and since God's Word is the final authority, he
cannot be challenged.

Since the book of *Proverbs* is all about wisdom, one of the main things it
stresses, is to give thought to what we speak, and also, to consider what
we give an "ear" to. A false witness is a liar. Most of us have probably
seen a portrayal of the three monkeys, with each one of them having their
hands over a different part of their heads. One, has his hands over his
ears, another one is covering his eyes, while the last one has his hands
over his mouth. The caption beneath the picture says, "Hear No Evil, See
No Evil, and Speak No Evil." This little analogy is actually proclaiming
advice from the Bible. If we just practiced this admonishment, it would
keep us out of a lot of trouble. Honesty is a virtue that we all should
walk in. The world is getting more wicked, and for many people, lying has
become the normal thing to do.

*Luke 8:18
(KJV):
Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given;
and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth
to have.*

*Luke 8:18
(AMP):
Be careful therefore how you listen, for to him who has (spiritual
knowledge) will more be given, and from him who does not have (spiritual
knowledge) even what he thinks and guesses and supposes that he has will be
taken away.*

In this scripture, we are told that by our hearing we can obtain some
things, and by our hearing we can lose some things. The scripture above in
*Luke 8 *is given at the conclusion of Jesus' *Parable of the Sower and the
Seed. *Jesus told the people that a sower went out to sow seed, and that
the seed would produce fruit, if it was put in good ground. He also listed
the kind of ground that the seed would not take root and grow in (ground
that was continually walked on, rocky ground, and thorny ground). He then
told them, that in this parable, the seed represented the Word of God, and
if it was sown in good soil (which was an honest and good heart) and if
they would be patient and keep the Word, it would produce fruit. The Lord
not only told them that they needed to be careful about what they heard,
but also, what they saw, as we must guard our eye gate and ear gate if we
are going to produce fruit for God.

*Verse 29* in our study tells us that the wicked man will even look guilty
when he is up to no good, while a righteous man will direct his way by
heeding the Word of God, which will always promote integrity in a person's
life. Years ago, I heard an interview with an old-time political figure. A
reporter ask him how he had such a good memory, and was able to remember
the promises he made, and who he made them to, and not contradict himself
in regard to what he told different people. He replied, "That's easy, when
you tell the truth, you never have to remember any lies you told, that
would require additional lies to cover them." Walking in truth, and
maintaining integrity, should be the goal of every Christian.

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for giving us Your Word in the Bible.
Help me to read and study it more. Lord, I not only want to hear what You
have to say, but I also want to do the things You have instructed us to do
in the Word of God. Give me Your grace to be obedient to the Word. Lord, I
also ask You to help me not to listen to things that I should not hear.
Lord, give me grace to turn my eyes away from those things that hinder my
growth in You. I know if I see and listen to Your Words, then I will be
able to speak the things I need to say. I ask this is the name of Jesus.
Amen.*

Read Genesis 46 – 48
Highlights:
Jacob's vision at Beersheba; the journey to Egypt; Joseph and the famine;
the best land given to Jacob; Joseph's sons blessed.
Jacob knew that God had planned for his people to live in Canaan, not in
Egypt, so he did not rush to Egypt for a grand reunion with his precious
son Joseph. Since the will of God was uppermost in Jacob's heart, he sought
assurance from God concerning his journey to Egypt, so Jacob left Hebron,
journeyed about 25 miles to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices unto the God
of his father Isaac. And God spake unto Israel in the visions of the night,
and said, Jacob, Jacob. And he said, Here am I. And He said . . . fear not
to go down into Egypt; for I will there make of thee a great nation . . . I
will also surely bring thee up again (Gen. 46:1-4).
The Lord assured Jacob that their sojourn in Egypt was not to be a
permanent one, but that it would be a time of preparing his family to
become a great nation. Earthly life is a time of preparation for eternity
(Luke 12:20-21). What gets priority, and how we live, is an important part
of our preparation. Our eyes should not be set on worldly securities,
pleasures, or achievements but should be foremost on becoming the person
God wants us to be in order to accomplish the purpose for which He created
us.
The life of Jacob gives the believer insight into the sovereignty of God,
who assists, strengthens, and sustains all who are faithful to Him. As the
years in Egypt passed, Jacob came to see how God had been directing,
protecting, and providing for him all of his life.
This remarkable man of God received much abuse throughout his life, but the
Lord conferred more blessings on Jacob than any other man in Old Testament
history. The name of Abraham, the father of the faithful (Rom. 4:11),
appears over 300 times in the Scriptures. The name Isaac appears only 131
times, often only in conjunction with Abraham and Jacob. Jacob, however, is
mentioned over 370 times. His new name Israel, referring to both himself
and his descendants, appears over 2500 times. It is a serious thing to
criticize one whom God has chosen to esteem, as He clearly said: Jacob have
I loved, but Esau have I hated (Rom. 9:13; Mal. 1:2-3).
Thought for Today:
The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich (spiritually), and He addeth no
sorrow with it (Prov. 10:22).
Christ Portrayed:
By Joseph, who was placed second only to Pharaoh (Gen. 41:39-40) to sustain
life and give provision (47:15-17). Jesus said: The Bread of God is He
which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world (John 6:33).
Word Studies:
46:4 put his hand upon thine eyes, be with you when you die; 46:31 Pharaoh
was a title given to the monarchs of Egypt; 47:4 sore, severe; 47:6
activity, ability, competence; 48:6 thy issue, your offspring; 48:14
wittingly, knowingly.

Jesus Wept
"Jesus Wept" John 11:35

Have you thought about the kind of Saviour we have. When the world
thinks of a savior they think of a man who comes to save the oppressed
with strength and power. Well, our Savior is better than any man the
world could think up, because while he came with all the strength and
power that heaven could afford him, he came in love. He was one who
will enter with us into all of our experiences. He felt the pain of
those around him so intensely that he wept, even though he knew he was
going to raise Lazarus from the dead. Think about it. This same Jesus
who had such power at his finger-tips, surrendered to the flow of
tears on his friends behalf...and even now, on our behalf. It is
remarkable to think that our struggles would trouble his spirit and
that our pain would bring tears to his eyes, but that's what is so
incredible about our Savior. Yes, he has strength and power, but he is
so much more than that. He is tender, gentle and loving. Jesus is the
man of
our dreams! He cares for us, he feels for us, he prays for us, he
sheds tears for us, and ultimately he died for us. Hallelujah! What a
Savior!
Thank you Father, for a Savior who weeps. Thank You for giving us Your
Son, who is the very image of you. Thank You for Your tears, O God.
The tears You both have shed for us make us realize that there is
compassion and love and tenderness reaching down to us. Father, help
us to realize that we need look no further than Jesus to find all that
our hearts desire. Amen

Genesis 28

Jacob dreams of angels and heaven.

INSIGHT

Jacob's dream -- in which he sees the angels ascending and descending the
ladder to heaven -- seems to be a turning point in his life. It appears to
be the point at which he receives a personal relationship with the Lord.
Jacob's life after this encounter was not flawless. But God was able to use
him in a central role to fulfill ancient promises.

So, too, we must have a personal relationship with God through Jesus, His
Son, and our Savior, before we can experience the work of God in us and
through us. Do you know Jesus personally? If not, why not receive Him as
your Savior and Lord now?

PRAYER

· Offer praise to your Savior in the words of this psalm:

Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,
And into His courts with praise.
Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.
For the Lord is good;
His mercy is everlasting,
And His truth endures to all generations (Psalm 100:4-5).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord:

Unto You I lift up my eyes,
O You who dwell in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So my eyes look to You, the Lord my God,
Until You have mercy on me
(based on Psalm 123:1-2).

· As you confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind, voice
your affirmation of God's Word:

For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich,
yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might
become rich (2 Corinthians 8:9).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· greater love for your family,
· the work of missions in North and South America,
· today's activities.

· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

Now may the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing, that
we may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit
(based on Romans 15:13).

Where's the Path?Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the
age. Matthew 28:19-20

There's a story of a man on an African safari deep in the jungle. The
guide assigned to him had a machete and was whacking away the tall
weeds and thick underbrush.

The traveler, tired and hot, and a bit frustrated said, "Where are we?
Do you know where you're taking me? Where's the path?"

The seasoned guide stopped—looked back at the man and said, "I am the path!"
We ask the same questions, don't we? We ask God, "Where are you
taking me? Where's the path?"

And he, like the guide, doesn't tell us. Oh he may give us a hint or
two, but that's all.
If he did, would we understand? Would we comprehend? No, like the
traveler, we're unacquainted with this jungle.

Jesus gives us a far greater gift. He says, "I am with you always, to
the very end of the age."

He gives us himself!

Be Still

"And the Lord appeared unto Isaac the same night" (Gen. 26:24).
"Appeared the same night," the night on which he went to Beer-sheba.
Do you think this revelation was an accident? Do you think the time of
it was an accident? Do you think it could have happened on any other
night as well as this? If so, you are grievously mistaken. Why did it
come to Isaac in the night on which he reached Beer-sheba? Because
that was the night on which he reached rest. In his old locality, he
had been tormented. There had been a whole series of petty quarrels
about the possession of paltry wells. There are no worries like little
worries, particularly if there is an accumulation of them. Isaac felt
this. Even after the strife was past, the place retained a
disagreeable association. He determined to leave. He sought change of
scene. He pitched his tent away from the place of former strife. That
very night the revelation came. God spoke when there was no inward
storm. He could not speak when the mind was fretted; His voice demands
the
silence of the soul. Only in the hush of the spirit could Isaac hear
the garments of his God sweep by. His still night was his starry
night.
My soul, hast thou pondered these words, "Be still, and know"? In the
hour of perturbation, thou canst not hear the answer to thy prayers.
How often has the answer seemed to come long after I The heart got no
response in the moment of its crying--in its thunder, its earthquake,
and its fire. But when the crying ceased, when the stillness fell,
when thy hand desisted from knocking on the iron gate, when the
interest of other lives broke the tragedy of thine own, then appeared
the long-delayed reply. Thou must rest, O soul, if thou wouldst have
thy heart's desire. Still the beating of thy pulse of personal care.
Hide thy tempest of individual trouble behind the altar of a common
tribulation and, that same night, the Lord shall appear to thee. The
rainbow shall span the place of the subsiding flood, and in thy
stillness thou shalt hear the everlasting music. --George Matheson
Tread in solitude thy pathway,
Quiet heart and undismayed.
Thou shalt know things strange, mysterious,
Which to thee no voice has said.
While the crowd of petty hustlers
Grasps at vain and paltry things,
Thou wilt see a great world rising
Where soft mystic music rings.
Leave the dusty road to others,
Spotless keep thy soul and bright,
As the radiant ocean's surface
When the sun is taking flight.

WITH smile of trust and folded hands,
The passive soul in waiting stands
To feel, as flowers in the sun and dew,
The One true Life its own renew.
JOHN G. WHITTIER
THE whole duty and blessedness of waiting on God has its root in this,
that He is such a blessed Being, full, to overflowing, of goodness and
power and life and joy, that we, however wretched, cannot for any time
come into contact with Him, without that life and power secretly,
silently, beginning to enter into us and blessing us. God is Love!
God's love is just His delight to impart Himself and His blessedness
to His children. Come, and however feeble you feel, just wait in His
presence. As a feeble invalid is brought out into the sunshine to let
its warmth go through him, come with all that is dark and cold in you
into the sunshine of God's holy, omnipotent love, and sit and wait
there, with the one thought: Here I am, in the sunshine of His love.
As the sun does its work in the weak one who seeks its rays, God will
do His work in you.

The Believer's Reward
Genesis 15:1-6
God assured Abraham that He was Abraham's "exceeding great reward" (Gen. 15:1).
The king of Sodom had offered Abraham all the riches that Abraham and
his servants had brought back, but he turned them down. Notice that
the tense is not past or future, but present. Not "I was" or "I will
be" but "I am"--"I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward" (v.
1).
We see from God's promise to be Abraham's reward that God never
permits His children to lose when they honor Him and seek His glory.
God never leaves His child without spiritual blessings after His child
has taken a stand for the glory of God.
Although Abraham had no children at this time, his faith in the Lord
is recorded in verse 6: "He believed in the LORD; and he counted it to
him for righteousness."
Because of Abraham's faith in God, he was able to look into the future
and trust God for everything.
Ephesians 1:3 tells us that present-day believers have been blessed
with "all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ."
But we, too, must set our eyes on the future. We must be those who
look to their reward for glorifying God, rather than looking at the
temporal satisfactions of the present.
"The judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.... And
in keeping of them there is great reward" (Ps. 19:9,11).

Getting Ahead of God

And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle
of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the
child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the
wilderness of Beer-sheba.
It is sometimes disconcerting to board an airplane at the scheduled
departure time and then have to endure a lengthy wait on the runway
before being cleared for takeoff. Not only do you miss your
appointments in a distant city, but you begin to wonder if the marvels
of our space-age technology are so marvelous. Yet just as bad as an
unscheduled delay would be an unscheduled hastening of the takeoff.
You can imagine the turmoil if a flight scheduled for 2:00 o'clock
departure left at 1:30. Getting ahead of what is designed can be just
as devastating as falling behind.
Abraham was a great man of faith, a friend of God. When God called him
to leave his homeland and go to an unknown destination, Abraham
immediately obeyed. Later the Lord promised Abraham that his seed
would be as numberless as the dust the earth. But Abraham remained
childless. His only heir was Eliezer of Damascus, whom he had adopted.
When he questioned God, Abraham was told, "This shall not be thine
heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own loins shall be
thine heir. And He brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward
heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to number them: and He
said to him, So shall thy seed be." Abraham believed this promise and
the Lord counted it to him for righteousness (Genesis 15:4-6). Yet
Abraham and his wife suffered from the same frailties all humans do.
After years of expectation and disappointment, they began to wonder if
the divine promise was really true. Barren Sarah decided to take
matters into
her own hands. She had an Egyptian handmaid whose name was Hagar.
Herself not able conceive, Sarah convinced Abraham to take Hagar as
his wife that she might bear him a son.
Although this was a common practice in the Ancient Near East,
nevertheless it was not the fulfillment of God's promise. The
appointed time for the birth of Abraham's heir had not yet arrived,
but Sarah wanted to force the issue. Shortly Abraham was presented
with a son, but by Hagar, not Sarah. An angel of the Lord had
previously instructed Hagar to name the child Ishmael. But the
heavenly messenger also warned that the child would be a wild man and
every man's hand would be against him.
It wasn't until twenty-four years later that the Lord performed a
miracle for Sarah and the son of promise was born. Although Abraham
was now one hundred years old, this was the promised time and Isaac
was the promised son. On the eighth day Isaac was circumcised and
months later Abraham made a great feast when the child was weaned. At
this festive occasion the behavior of Ishmael betrayed his jealousy.
He taunted his young half brother, mocked and ridiculed baby Isaac. As
Sarah viewed this it raised her motherly dander. She demanded of her
husband, "Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this
bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac" (Genesis
21:10).
This grieved Abraham very much for Ishmael was his own flesh and
blood. But God comforted him assuring him that, although Isaac was
indeed the promised seed, nevertheless God would also make of Ishmael
a great nation. Thus, "Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took
bread, and a bottle of water," and bid Hagar and the boy a sad
good-bye (Genesis 21:14).
God was kind to Ishmael and providentially protected his mother and
him. But it was clear that Isaac was the child of promise, not
Ishmael. Ishmael was the result of the impatience of Abraham and
Sarah. The wild man was born because this couple got ahead of God.
They believed that God would provide the promised seed but mistakenly
attempted to speed up God's timetable. God performs what He promises,
but always in His own time. "Wait on the LORD be of good courage, and
He shall strengthen thine heart. Wait, I say, on the LORD" (Psalm
27:14). That's good advice for us today.
MORNING HYMN
My Jesus, as Thou wilt!
O may Thy will be mine;
Into Thy hand of love
I would my all resign.
Thro' sorrow, or thro' joy,
Conduct me as Thine own;
And help me still to say,
My Lord, Thy will be done.
