Message for the day 14.02.2012

The more I sow seeds of effort, the more I reap the fruits of result.

Thought to Ponder:

When I go on putting in effort in the right direction, I will keep
gaining qualities. I will be able to keep drawing the best from
everything around and also keep receiving cooperation from people. If,
in between anything or anyone hinders this, effort needed to be put in
at that time will be not so much because I am continuing to put in my
efforts anyway.

Point to Practice:

Today I will put in efforts towards my aim, without worrying about
the results. I will at least do 3 things that can take me towards my
aim. This will ensure that I have a practice of continuous inputs.
For, I know the result will come anyway, at its own time.

The Princess of Disks

A young woman indicated by the Princess of Disks would be a quiet,
reserved person - sometimes shy. She will be practical and capable,
though rarely seeking the limelight. I used to know a stage manager
who always came up as a Princess of Disks - she loved the glitz of the
theatre as long as she could stay behind the scenes - having, of
course, created them first!

She's a gentle person who, like the Queen of Disks, is much concerned
with domestic matters, and with Nature and growth. As a result,
sometimes when this card comes up we may be looking at somebody who is
expecting a child. The Princess of Cups often represents conception,

The Princess of Disks woman is a reliable and diligent person,
trustworthy and hard-working. She is faithful by nature, and deals

Attribution - Earth of Earth; Capricorn

Potato chips were invented in 1853 at Saratoga Springs, New York,
where chef George Crum of Moon's Lake House shaved potatoes paper thin
and sent them out to a patron who had complained that his French fries

encouraged Crum to open up his own restaurant. Crum's new restaurant

Ralph Waldo Emerson summed it up well when he said, "The religion of
one age is the literary entertainment of the next." At one time there
were magnificent temples of Apollo and Zeus, people prayed to them,
made offerings to them.

Today no one believes that those gods and goddesses were anything but
figments of ancient people's imagination. Today we learn about these
gods as part of myths.

All these ancient deities are history now, but they have left their
mark on the language. This week we'll look at five words that are
derived from the names of gods and goddesses. I could say mythological
gods and goddesses, but then I'd be repeating myself.

Promethean

PRONUNCIATION:

(pruh-MEE-thee-uhn)

MEANING:

adjective: Boldly creative; defiant; audacious.

noun: A person who is boldly creative or defiantly original.

ETYMOLOGY:

After Prometheus, a demigod in Greek mythology. He made man from clay,
stole fire from Zeus by trickery, and gave it to humans. For his crime
he was chained to a rock and an eagle devoured his liver to have it
grow again to be eaten again the next day. The name means forethinker,
from Greek pro- (before) + manthanein (to learn). Earliest documented
use: 1594.

USAGE:

"A Promethean impulse lives on in the financial markets, where
quantitative investors hubristically strive to invent and speculate
beyond their capacity to understand."

MONDAY 6TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME – YEAR II

Jas 1:1-11 / Mk 8:11-13

JAMES 1:1-11
James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, sends greetings
to the twelve tribes scattered among the nations. Consider yourselves
fortunate, my brothers and sisters, when you meet with every kind of
trial, for you know that the testing of your faith makes you
steadfast. Let your steadfastness become perfect with deeds, that you
yourselves may be perfect and blame less, without any defect. If any
of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God who gives to all easily and
unconditionally. But ask with faith, not doubting, for the one who
doubts is like a wave driven and tossed on the sea by the wind. Such a
person should not expect anything from the Lord, since the doubter has
two minds and his conduct will always be insecure. Let the believer
who is poor boast in been uplifted, and let the rich one boast in
being humbled, because he will pass away like the flower of the field.
The sun rises and its heat dries the grass; the flower withers and its
beauty vanishes. So, too, will the rich person fade away even in the
midst of his pursuits.

MARK 8:11-13
The Pharisees came and started to argue with Jesus. Hoping to
embarrass him, they asked for some heavenly sign. Then his spirit was
moved. He gave a deep sigh and said, "Why do the people of this
present time ask for a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign shall be
given to this people." Then he left them, got into the boat again and
went to the other side of the lake.

REFLECTION
"Go home now. As you believed, so let it be." Jesus, struck by the
strong faith of the centurion, a captain in the Roman army, who asked
him to heal his servant in his house by just speaking a word, cures
his slave from a distance. This kind of faith is so different from the
skepticism of the people in today's gospel. They were expecting a
totally different type of Messiah – one who will manifest himself with
extraordinary signs, an invincible leader with devastating power. They
were blind to the signs of God's presence in everything around them.
William Barclay puts it this way: "To Jesus, such a demand (for signs)
was not due to the desire to see the hand of God; it was due to the
fact that they were blind to his hand."

May today's reading be a reminder to all of us to see, and believe,
that God is truly present in all things – the air we breathe, the
tireless beating of the heart from birth until death, the rainbow
colored flowers bathed in sunshine, and the thousand little things we
hardly notice in our daily lives – all of them whispering to each one
of us, "God loves you."
