Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

January 19
Mouth Confession; Heart Belief

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe
in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be
saved. (Romans 10:9)
There must be confession with the mouth. Have I made it? Have I openly
avowed my faith in Jesus as the Savior whom God has raised from the
dead, and have I done it in God's way! Let me honestly answer this
question.
There must also be belief with the heart. Do I sincerely believe in
the risen Lord Jesus? Do I trust in Him as my sole hope of salvation?
Is this trust from my heart? Let me answer as before God.
If I can truly claim that I have both confessed Christ and believed in
Him, then I am saved. The text does not say it may be so, but it is
plain as a pikestaff and clear as the sun in the heavens: "Thou shalt
be saved." As a believer and a confessor, I may lay my hand on this
promise and plead it before the Lord God at this moment, and
throughout life, and in the hour of death, and at the Day of Judgment.
I must be saved from the guilt of sin, the power of sin, the
punishment of sin, and ultimately from the very being of sin. God hath
said it—"Thou shalt be saved." I believe it. I shall be saved. I am
saved. Glory be to God forever and ever!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Maintain Confidence in Uncertain Times
by Jane Powell

"Confidence comes from your internal power plant."

Confidence is a strong, powerful force. When it is part
of your heart, you have the ability to conquer any obstacles life may
throw at you.

Undoubtedly, situations will come up where you may feel
uncertain or less confident. Don't let doubtful feelings stop you.
It's up to you and nobody else to keep going in times of uncertainty.

There is a saying, "Fake it till you make it." You can
pretend to be what you want to be until you grow into it. Try it. It's
what a lot of successful women admit to doing when they are unsure.

It doesn't take long before the power of your confidence
resurfaces and you're back on track to achieving your goals.

DO-OVERS

Even if you're not from Washington D.C. you may have
heard of former
Mayor Anthony Williams. He has a remarkable story.
Williams was born
to an unwed teen who gave him up. He was known as a
"problem child"
in foster care. By age three, little Anthony had still
never spoken
a word. It seemed that a pattern for his life was set, that is,
until two warm and caring people took a chance on him.

Anthony was taken in by an opera-singing postal clerk and her
equally generous-hearted husband. He soon began to speak and
eventually thrived in their home. He excelled
academically and later
attended both Harvard and Yale Universities.

In 1998, he came from obscurity to win 66% of the vote to become
mayor in one of the world's major cities. In his
inaugural address,
Williams said: "Forty-four years ago, my parents adopted
me and gave
me a second chance. I feel this city has now adopted me and I will
give to it everything my parents taught me about love, service,
commitment."

It's no doubt that, had he never been adopted into his particular
family, his life would have been wholly different. He
was saved by a
second chance. And haven't each of us been given second
chances? He
got a do-over on his birth family. Haven't we been given
do-overs on
relationships, jobs, blown opportunities and the like? Quite often
second chances are the result of the generosity of
someone who cares
a great deal. And sometimes we are saved by those second chances.

Author Dr. Seuss says in his book THE LORAX, "Unless someone like
you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's
not."

I recently came across a story of a young American woman who was
saved by a do-over. During the second World War, she lost her
husband. He died in India of a tropical disease and she became
despondent. In time, despair turned into depression and
she lost all
interest in living. She just didn't care anymore.

She booked passage on a ship back to America. On the voyage, she
became acquainted with a seven-year-old boy who, like her, was all
alone. His parents had died in the fighting in Burma. He seemed to
want to be with the young woman, but her pain would not allow it.
She wanted nothing to do with him and avoided him
whenever possible.
She felt so ravaged by loss, that she was unable to get outside of
herself and care about anyone else. And she certainly did not have
the energy to take on someone else's problems.

Then one night the ship was torpedoed. The young woman
made her way
to the deck and prepared herself to go down with the
doomed vessel.
Some part of her actually welcomed it as an escape from her pain.
The child, too, came on deck. He shivered with cold and
fright. When
he spotted the woman, he came over and clung to her.

That was when a lump of ice melted somewhere deep inside her. She
put her arms around the child and led him to one of the lifeboats.
For several days, as they waited to be rescued, she held
him and he
held her. Years later her friends would say that they didn't know
whether the woman saved the boy, or the boy saved the woman. They
each gave the other a second chance at life and a do-over on love.

"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going
to get better. It's not."

But it's the people who give do-overs who truly change the world.

Steve Goodier

Where is the best place to start, when you're determined to
make real improvements in your life? Where is the best place
to start, when you're totally committed to following your
dream?

The best place to start is precisely where you are. The best
time to start is the moment you are in.

As difficult and challenging as your situation may be, in
that situation is a way to move forward. From where you are
right now, there is a path that leads to precisely where you
would like to be.

Don't waste your time wishing for a more favorable starting
point. Instead, make use of the starting point you have, and
get going.

Rather than complaining about not having enough, use your
creativity and imagination to become more and more effective
with what you do have. Devote your energy to creating new
value in the present, not to resentment of the past.

This is the best place to start, because this is the place
from which you can start right now. From here you can
literally go anywhere, so go ahead, take that first step and
don't look back.

BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART

THEM!
Galatians 3:28-29
"There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is
there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you
belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to
the promise."

Here in the U.S. we have just celebrated the birthday of Martin Luther
King, Jr. As I have been reflecting on the evils of prejudice, I
recall an early-childhood incident that perhaps changed all my life. I
was about ten or eleven and Mom and I were waiting in the car for my
dad to finish his shift as a regional bus driver.

While we were waiting we noticed an African American boy about my age
lovingly cradle a large platter. My mom persuaded me to go and talk
with him and find out about the platter. It was the first time I had
ever spoken to someone of another color.

I felt no animosity toward any others, but I guess in my mind he was
THEM and I was US. Within a few minutes the two of us were happily
engaged in conversation as he bubbled over with excitement about how
he had won the plate at an amusement park and was going to give it to
his mama. As I returned to our car he was no longer one of THEM—he had
just expanded my world.
Take a few minutes and think of others that in your mind you have
classified as THEM. After you have done this, pray and ask the Lord to
show you how you can make them a brother or sister in the Lord. No
longer THEM, but US!

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, trust Him completely and
be a blessing.

Expect trouble as an inevitable part of life, and when it comes,
hold your head high. Look it squarely in the eye, and say, "I will be

To be loved, you have to be willing to love first

Maybe life is all about being first after all! Not so
fast. Being first is about consciousness, not competitiveness, i.e.,
"as you sow, so shall you reap." To be loved, you have to be willing
to love first; to be cherished, you have to be willing to give respect
first; to be heard, you have to be willing to listen first; and to
experience forgiveness and freedom, you have to be willing to forgive
first.

I honestly believe that the only way to get to happiness
is to be happy already. Many people live their life according to the
formula: Do + Have = Be. They cannot just be happy because first they
have to do "x," and then they have to have "y." In other words, they
have to have a house, they have to do more, they have to do even more,
they have to have a partner, they have to have lots of money, etc. But
why not just be happy?

In the healing process, people often convince themselves
that they have to get well before they can choose happiness again. In
my work I encourage my clients to honor their pain and choose peace,
to feel fear and choose love, to face the anger and choose
forgiveness, to experience the heartbreak and choose happiness, and to
experience guilt and choose innocence.

Gandhi once said you have to be the change you want. Why?
Because the mirror cannot change without you. And the world is only a
mirror. Remember, you see only your thoughts. When you shift, shift
happens. If you don't, you simply experience more of the same. It is
no good saying, "I'll be open with you, as soon as you are open with
me." Be first. Be different if you want a different outcome. Be the
goal.

What "to be" decisions will you make today? Think of your
goals, your challenges, your relationships, and ask yourself, "Is how
I am being going to bring me what I really want?" Be still a moment
and reset your intention to be loving no matter what, to be kind in
spite of everything, to shine your light come what may. Your "to be"
decisions are between you and God. Let nothing steal them away.

In each challenge
+++++++++++++++++++

In each challenge is great opportunity. So step forward, meet
the challenge, work persistently through it, and make the
opportunity yours.

It's difficult, complicated, inconvenient, and demanding.
And you are wonderfully able to deal with all that, to
create a valuable outcome.

There are plenty of excuses you could make, and yet you know
the excuses have no real value. There will be times when you
feel like quitting, and yet in every case you know you can
overcome the desire to quit with your positive enthusiasm
for seeing it through.

You've successfully endured every challenge in your life so
far, and you certainly have what it takes to successfully
take on even bigger challenges. You are able to make a
difference, and the more you make use of that ability, the
stronger it grows.

Though many things will go wrong, you know from experience
that even in adversity there is much value to be gained.
Each obstacle makes the eventual achievement all the more
rewarding.

You're good at dealing with challenges, so put that ability
to meaningful and rewarding use. Step forward, meet the
challenges that lead to your dreams, and bring those dreams
to life.

Father of Compassion
"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father
of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our
troubles, so that we can comfort those in trouble with the comfort we
ourselves have received from God."
2 Corinthians. 1:3, 4

When we realize that all our trials have a purpose in God's plan for
our lives, they become opportunities for growth, not just an
experience we must endure. Have you ever had the experience of
comforting someone in a special way because you had experienced a
similar trial in your own life? When we can impact the life of one of
our brothers or sisters because we have "been there", we find
ourselves praising God for the way in which He has led us. It is
because we have felt the comfort of our Father, "the God of all
comfort", that we can pass on that same kind of comfort to others. It
is because of the struggles we have experienced and the comfort that
we have received that we have been equipped with the tools necessary
to pass this comfort on to others. Sometimes, years may go by before
we will be able to use what we have learned, but we can trust God that
there is a purpose and a time for passing on the comfort we have
received. Let us be ever aware of
God's comfort in our lives, so that we may complete the circle by
passing His comfort on to others. This is the legacy we can leave
behind; we can be known as God's comforters.
Thank You Father, for Your comfort. Thank You for never leaving me
alone, but for always being there for me. Help me to reach out to
others and comfort them as You have comforted me. Give me a ministry
of compassion that I might help others to see You! Amen

The Wolf ManJesus arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there
was a great calm. So, the men marveled, saying "Who can this be, that
even the winds and the sea obey him? Matthew 8:26-27

When I was six, my dad let me watch the movie, The Wolf Man. Boy, did
he regret that decision!

I was convinced the wolf man spent each night prowling our den! To
reach the kitchen from my bedroom I had to pass perilously close.
More than once I woke up my dad. Like Jesus in the boat, dad was
sound asleep in the storm.
He'd ask, "Now why are you afraid?"

I'd remind him of the monster. And with super-human courage, he'd
escort me through the valley of the shadow of death, and pour me a
glass of milk. I'd look at him and think, "What kind of man is this?"

God views our storms the way my father viewed my Wolf Man angst.
Jesus got up, gave a command to the wind and the waves, and it became
completely calm!
What kind of man is this? What kind of man, indeed!

Devotional For Dieters 1/19

January 19

1 Peter 2:21, 24
. . .because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that
ye should follow his steps. . .Who his own self bare our sins in his
own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto
righteousness. . .

It is good for us to remember, as we sit feeling sorry for ourselves
because we may not indulge in tasty pleasures, that our sacrifice is
not really so great when we compare it to the many sacrifices Christ
made. What we are doing is indeed a sacrifice, but for self rather
than for others. Christ sacrificed for us in order that we might enjoy
life to the fullest. Let us learn from the sacrifice of Christ and
remember that He has given us the power to overcome any temptation
that might present itself.

Today's thought: Christ has conquered temptation and will be with me!

For the Love of Football

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth
so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another
deeply, from the heart. --I Peter 1:22-23

My husband, Ken, loves this time of year. It's almost time
for the Super Bowl. Ken loves football - he has played and coached it,
he appreciates the physical demands it makes on the body, he loves the
tackles, plays, strategy, everything. He doesn't even care who is
playing. On the other hand, I'm a football snob. If it isn't "my" team
on the field, I just as soon watch paint dry. The difference between
Ken and me? He's not so selective -- Ken delights in the game, even
one between two last place teams. But me? If it isn't a team I can
relate to, then I don't care to be involved.

Ken loves the game because it's, well... football.
Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could love the church because... it's
the church, the bride of Jesus, his body?! Most of us, though, are far
too selective. We prefer a church we can relate to; a group of other
Christians we like and can identify with.

God calls us to love his people because they are, well...
his people. And we are to love our brothers and sisters deeply, as
from the heart. True, there will be people in the body of Christ with
whom you can identify better than most. But the church that God calls
us to honor and cherish is bigger than your denomination or mine. We
can't be denominational snobs. The same Holy Spirit who lives in me,
also lives in certain Christians I'm not prone to cheer for or
fellowship with. This year, widen your circle of Christian fellowship
to include brothers and sisters in other denominations.

Lord Jesus, I confess that I do not love my Christian
brothers and sisters with a sincere affection and deeply from the
heart. Help me to fervently love all those who claim you as Savior.

Blessings,

Today is a very special day, and it is special because the Lord
foresaw and created it. It is special to God and therefore, should
be special to you that you have another day to worship Him. No matter
what might take place it is still a special day. I say unto you much
evil will take place but this is not the fault of God for He can do no
evil, but it is evil because it is of satan, the forces of darkness.
Darkness is trying to overshadow the light which is of God and without
God there would be no light. Men love darkness when their deeds are
evil, the light reveals to one what they are and no one can come to
God without the Holy Spirit draws them. It is the will of God to draw
all mankind unto Himself. Do not be deceived, do not let satan speak
his words of lies and deceit to you. He is trying to reveal a
different way which is away from God. Come to the Father, through the
Son, by the drawing and anointing of the Holy Spirit. Do not be
deceived, satan attends Church and he is in your Church, he is seeking
any heart that he can deceive and he seeks to gain entrance through
your thought life. You can only cast him out through the power of the
Holy Spirit whom the Father has clothed you with, and I say unto all
to bid him flee in the Holy Name of Jesus but he cannot touch any one
unless God allows it. Does not God have the power to kill and destroy
him at any time he chooses but God's time is not that of the world.
God is still on His throne and He keeps watch on His people but they
have a free will, and a free will to keep on the sword and shield of
faith, the armor of God through the Word. It is very important to
keep the Word in your heart and mind for God and His Word are one and
I will speak no lies, but the devil is a thief and a liar and I say
unto you, be not deceived by the world who claims that there is no
devil or evil spirits, but they are in the midst. It is true the
natural eye cannot see what the spiritual eye is able to behold, and I
tell you that satan is seeking to destroy the new generation but I
have promised to save your offspring if you abide in Me and My Word
abide in you who keep the faith.
It is time to give your time to prayer. Your family need your
prayers, My people need your prayers, the world need your prayers.
Oh! How much all mankind need God.

Today's Promise from the Bible

Hosea 14:4

I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger

Reflection

Praise be to God that He, in the midst of our depravity, drew us to
Him with the sweet chords of His melodious grace. We were wretched and
iniquitous, yet He chose to love us freely. Hallelujah! Praise the
Lord, provider of our salvation and promise of hope!

1 Thessalonians 5:4-6: But you, brothers, are not in darkness so that
this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all sons of the
light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the

Those Matters Beyond Human Understanding

A determination to know what cannot be known always works harm to the
Christian heart. Ignorance in matters on our human level is never to
be excused if there has been opportunity to correct it. But there are
matters which are obviously "too high for us." These we should meet in
trusting faith and say as Jesus said, "Even so, Father: for so it
seemed good in thy sight." There are things that we can never
understand until we have the benefit of advanced experience and the
addition of a light beyond anything we possess at present. Under those
circumstances it is not good to attempt to understand. Confessed
ignorance becomes us better. Human curiosity and pride often combine
to drive us to try to understand acts of God which are plainly outside
the field of human understanding. We dislike to admit that we do not
know what is going on, so we torture our minds trying to fathom the
mysterious ways of the Omniscient One. It's hard to conceive of a more
fruitless task. For instance, a child which had been long desired and
prayed for is suddenly taken away. The parents are prostrated with
grief, and to add to their suffering comes the torturing thought that
they should know why it all happened, but do not. Then begins the
long, painful attempt to learn the secret of life and death. Why did
this happen? What does God have in mind? These poor friends bruise
their minds cruelly trying to fathom the unfathomable. We may as well
learn (and the earlier the better) that God has no private secretaries
who are on the inside of the secrets of eternity. All God wanted to
say, He has said in the Scriptures. Beyond that we show the greatest
wisdom simply to remain still before Him and whisper, "Even so,
Father." To the adoring heart, the best and most satisfying
explanation for anything always will be, "It seemed good in thy
sight."

Verse
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,'
declares the LORD. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are
my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'
Isaiah 55:8-9

Thought
There are mysteries God deigns to unlock for humankind and there are
other mysteries that will always remain just that. We sometimes
confuse the two categories.

Prayer
Thank You, God, that I am not God. For the foolishness of sometimes
trying to be, forgive me.

I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.
Psalm 18:1 (KJV)

Inspirational Readings by A.B. Simpson
Days of Heaven on Earth
Thursday, January 19, 2012

I once heard an old man say something that I have never forgotten.
"When God tests you it is a good time for you to test Him by putting
His promises to the proof. Claim from Him just as much as your trials
have made necessary."

There are two ways of getting out of a trial. One is simply to try to
get rid of the trial, and be thankful when it is over. The other is to
recognize the trial as a challenge from God to claim a larger blessing
than we have ever had. We should greet it with delight as an
opportunity of obtaining a larger measure of divine grace.

Thus even the adversary becomes an auxiliary, and the things that seem
to be against us turn out to be for the furtherance of our way.
Surely, we are to be more than conquerors through him who loved us
(Romans 8:37).

Fill us with Thy fragrance,

Keep us as Thou art.

Then Thy life will make us

Holy and complete;

In Thy grace triumphant,

In Thy sweetness, sweet.

An Unfailing Faith

"'Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have
prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have
turned back, strengthen your brothers.'" (LUKE 22:31-32)

Scripture Focus: Luke 22:31-34; 54-62

Imagine having Jesus Christ tell you personally, as He told Peter,
that He's praying your faith would not fail! All the trials,
temptations, and heartaches in our lives would not seem so
intimidating. In fact, we do not have to imagine that; Jesus is
praying for us.

Peter feared what others thought of him and consequently renounced
Jesus three times (vs. 54-62). But God had implanted faith deep in
Peter's heart. Peter repented, just as Jesus said he would, and became
a great leader of believers, encouraging and strengthening Christians
through the ages, even us today.

I've known many people who identify with Peter and have given in to
the fear of man. Myself included, we have denied Jesus by our words or
actions. Yet we remember that faith in Jesus is infused into our
hearts, into every part of us, once we believe in Him. Jesus does not
favor one person over another. What He prayed for Peter, He is praying
for us right now. This reality has comforted and strengthened me again
and again.

Insight: Right now Jesus is praying for you and me, praying that our
faith will not fail. He is the source of our faith.

Father, forgive us for the times that we have questioned
You; forgive us for the times we have doubted You; forgive us for the

**May Yahweh look with favor on you and give you peace. Numbers 6:26, HCSB

*Has someone ever turned his or her face away from you? Perhaps it was in
anger or hatred or disdain or contempt. No doubt you recall the hurt you
felt.

When God turns His face toward us, we may compare it to a father smiling at
his child or a person at a friend. We are assured of acceptance. The
promise inferred is we will receive peace.

In these verses from Numbers the Lord Jehovah bestows on Aaron and his sons
the priestly blessing that they in turn were to give to His people Israel.
The Lord's name is used three times in this benediction, perhaps
foreshadowing the Trinity and the New Testament benediction. The source of
the blessing is the favor of God. The blessing is upon individuals, not the
collective nation of Israel. Each of the blessings carries with it a
promise.

God's face shone on us when He sent His Son Jesus into the world to save us
from our sins. Jesus, in turn, promised us peace in our hearts when we know
Him as both Savior and Lord. As followers of Jesus, God never turns His
face away from us.

Father, thank You for turning Your face to me, accepting me as Your child,
and giving me peace.*

When I was a child, the *Saturday Evening Post* came every week. One of the
stock cartoon figures was the lonely doomsayer walking the city streets
wearing a sandwich board that read, "REPENT OR PERISH!" Very funny, we all
thought. Yet, how many times is "Repent or Perish!" just exactly the
message we need? The secretive addictions, out-of-control compulsions,
self-destructive habits, let alone the casual neglect of prayer and
worship. All of them root us in the Old Eve/Adam against whom repentance
(Christ's metanoia—Mark's word—rather than our paranoia) is the only sure
antidote. Fear can work, but how much more lively is our renewal when it is
not the threat of doom but the dawning of God's new day that's calling us
forward.

*Deliver us, Holy Lord, from self-deceitful complacency so that we may hear
your good news as if for the first time. Amen. *
