On This Day:

Saturday January 21, 2012

This is the 21st day of the year, with 345 days remaining in 2012.

Fact of the Day: gun salute

Gun or cannon salutes, used to honor distinguished persons or to mark
special occasions, originate from the practice of firing all guns of a
battery, fort or ship as a token of disarming them, because early guns
were not speedily reloaded. Modern gun salutes are fired with blank
cartridges or charges. The number of shots is prescribed by
international custom and agreement. Referred to as the royal salute,
the 21-gun salute is fired for chiefs of state, heads of government,
members of a reigning royal family and others of comparable rank.
Salutes of 17, 15, 13, 11, seven, and five shots are fired for people
of lesser rank. Firing an odd number of shots is believed to stem from
an ancient naval superstition that an even number of shots is unlucky.

Lord of Happiness

The Nine of Cups

This is a lovely card, known as Lord of Happiness. It talks about a
sense of inner fulfillment and bliss, which radiates outward to touch
everybody with whom you come into contact.

At a spiritual level, we're talking about inner harmony, contentment
and tranquility - an appreciation of the High Powers, feeling at one
with the Universe. This feeling leads to feeling that we are blessed
by life.

On an everyday level, the card will often come up to mark periods of
high achievement, and the resulting sense of pleasure and
satisfaction. It will also come up to acknowledge joy and happiness in
an emotional relationship.

When this card appears in your reading, it's important to make the
time to simply enjoy your own feelings, to revel in your sense of
calmness and joy.

Working with the Nine of Cups

On a day which is ruled by the Lord of Happiness, we need only open
ourselves to the infinite blessings of the Universe, and we will be
surrounded by warm happy loving energy. At its highest level, this
card reminds us of the completely inexhaustible supply of love that
flows continuously about us, and tells us to simply step forward and
enjoy!

In the hurly burly of modern life it's easy to forget to count our
blessings. And in so doing, we lose sight of a very basic spiritual
truth - love IS all around us. Beauty springs up in the most
unexpected places. Radiance and wonder abound in this world of ours.

Yes - sure, there's a lot of pain out there too. Sure, not everything
may be as we wish it to be. Sure, we might hear a news report that
does not fill us with faith and belief in the race.

But we can look up to the sky....and there (no matter what the
weather) we will see an image of pure perfection. We can study a
flower, and we will see a miracle. We can look at our lives and be
thankful for all the things that we're glad are present in it.

And we can do this with an open heart - no doubts, no yes-buts, no
compromises. When we do this, we fill our souls with the colour of
wonder. We touch the dreaming parts of us. And once filled, those
secret silent places can feed us strength when we confront ugliness or
cruelty.

All it takes to see the brightness of life is our willingness to look
- without reservation. And when we see brightness, and we allow it to
enter inside us, we become brighter, and hope is an easier emotion.

So on a Lord of Happiness day, do these things - look until you find
something perfect; seek till you discover something beautiful;
contemplate until you find something to be grateful for. And having
done those things, draw that beauty, that perfection, that gratitude
inside you. And live the rest of the day in accordance with what you
have discovered. You'll make miracles!! I promise!

Affirmation: Life fills me with wonder and light

After the difficult choices of the Seven and the stagnation of the
Eight, the Cups suit starts to balance out with the Nine. One of the
most positive and uplifting cards of the entire deck, the Nine of Cups
shows satisfaction on all levels - emotional, physical, sensual. It is
little wonder that most Tarot readers refer to this as the Wish Card,
and its appearance is often taken as a sign that, whatever your
heart's desire is, it shall be granted in the coming days. It may not
be granted exactly as you expected but you can rest assured that you
will get what you want.

As it is a Cups card, the Nine of Cups usually refers to an
emotionally fulfilling situation, such as the strengthening of a
romantic bond, the solidification of a friendship or the consommation
of a sexual relationship. It shows that joy and happiness are
certainly within your grasp, and that you probably already have them.
It is a sign to enjoy the abundance of life for as long as it lasts.
Feel each of your emotions as if you had never felt any of them
before. Take some time to value every person you love - and all those
who love you back. See the perfection all around you.

On a more physical level, this card signals delight and pleasure,
contentment with what you have and a steady foundation for the future.
Your worries are all in the past, and you can look forward to a bright
future. The Nine of Cups shows excellent health, though when badly
dignified it can often point to an overabundance of physical pleasure
that can lead to intoxication and illness. But this is really the only
caution of the Nine of Cups: enjoy life and enjoy living but don't
take it too far, because pleasure without regard to the consequences
is rapidly lost.

It is rare that the Nine of Cups refers to a sense of spiritual bliss,
since the cards of the spirit are the Swords. But with the Swords suit
so full of strife and danger, the Nine of Cups would look out of place
anywhere else but in the Cups suit. And if you think about it this
makes sense, because when the pleasure and contentment of the physical
plane is transferred to the spiritual level, it becomes inner peace
and harmony with the Universe. The Universe is, after all, the source
of all the love and pleasure that flows through the Nine of Cups into
our lives. It only makes sense that we can sometimes follow that river
to its source.

NINE OF CUPS

Attribution - Jupiter in Pisces

Cups is the suit of emotion, inner states, feelings, relationships,
memories, spiritual experiences. The cup is the container of something
sacred. It is the suit of artists, musicians, creativity, healing,
imagination.

Nines are about nearing the end, the final stage, dreams, courage,
mastery, letting go and terminating properly.

Rider-Waite Imagery

A man wearing a red hat sits with arms crossed. Behind him is a table
with 9 cups on it. The table cloth is blue.

The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite (1911)

refreshment of wine is on the arched counter behind him, seeming to

material side only, but there are other aspects.

Cold turkey

Meaning

The sudden and complete withdrawal from an addictive substance and/or
the physiological effects of such a withdrawal. Also, predominantly in
the USA, plain speaking.

Origin

At this time of year you have probably had enough of cold turkey to
last until next year's festivities. Nevertheless, here's another
plateful.

The term 'cold turkey' is now predominantly used as the name of the
drug withdrawal process. Also, by extension, it is used to refer to
any abrupt termination of something we are accustomed to. To find the
origin of the term we need to delve into the annals of American
speech. Let's talk turkey.

Cold turkey The turkey looms large in the American psyche because of
its link to early European colonists and is, as even Limies like me
know, the centrepiece of the annual Thanksgiving meal. In the USA, and
as far as I can tell nowhere else, 'plain speaking/getting down to
business' is called 'talking cold turkey'. This usage dates from the
early part of the 20th century, as in this example from The Des Moines
Daily News, May 1914:

I've heard [Reverend Billy] Sunday give his 'Booze' sermon, and
believe me that rascal can make tears flow out of a stone. And
furthermore he talks "cold turkey". You know what I mean - calls a
spade a spade.

The English newspaper The Daily Express introduced the phrase to an
English audience in a January 1928 edition:

"She talked cold turkey about sex. 'Cold turkey' means plain truth in America."

'Talking cold turkey' meant no nonsense talking and its partner
expression 'going cold turkey' meant no nonsense doing. To 'go cold
turkey' was to get straight to the scene of the action - in at the
deep end. An example of it in use is found in Debates: the official
reports of the Canadian House of Commons, 1899:

I am told that other countries, for instance Australia, have gone cold
turkey all the way. They have gone full metric and have experienced
less difficulty in the implementation of their program over the
long-term.

The earliest reference to 'cold turkey' in relation to drug withdrawal
that I can find is from the Canadian newspaper The Daily Colonist,
October 1921:

"Perhaps the most pitiful figures who have appeared before Dr.
Carleton Simon are those who voluntarily surrender themselves. When
they go before him, they [drug addicts] are given what is called the
'cold turkey' treatment."

In the state of drug withdrawal the addict's blood is directed to the
internal organs, leaving the skin white and with goose bumps. It has
been suggested that this is what is alluded to by 'cold turkey'.
There's no evidence to support that view. For the source of 'cold
turkey' we need look no further than the direct, no nonsense approach
indicated by the earlier 'in at the deep end' meaning of the term.

See other phrases that were coined in the USA.
