US Dep. Defense Secretary Michele Flournoy
US deputy defense secretary Michele Flournoy said Wednesday, April 21:
"The US has ruled out a military strike against Iran's nuclear program
any time soon." This is the first time a senior administration
official has publicly admitted that America has dropped its military
option against Iran. Instead, said Flournoy, the US is hoping that
"negotiations and United Nations sanctions will prevent the Middle
East nation from developing nuclear weapons."
Addressing a news conference in Singapore, she said clearly: "Military
force is an option of last resort, it's off the table in the near
term."

A few hours later, the Pentagon spokesman denied that a military
strike against Iran was off the table, indicating confusion and
polarization at the top of the Obama administration on its Iran
policy.
debkafile's military sources report that Flournoy's statement
contradicts every public assertion by president Barack Obama, defense
secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the joint Chiefs of staff
Adm. Mike Mullen, all of whom have insisted that all options are on
the table if Iran fails to curb its current nuclear activities. Deputy
Secretary Flournoy is regarded as a senior, serious and responsible
Pentagon official who is too experienced to go out on a limb with a
key policy statement to reporters without the highest authority.
The policy reversal amounts to a beckoning finger at America's open
door for Iran to return to the negotiating table.
Monday and Tuesday, April 19-20, Iran's foreign minister Manouchehr
Mottaki announced his government is willing to go back to talks with
the United States and other powers on a deal for its enriched uranium.
Turkey has offered its services as broker between Washington and
Tehran.
But if anything, Iran's position on its nuclear program has hardened
since the first round of negotiations ended in nothing, and the next
round is likely to waste more precious months and end the same way.
Tehran's only object in seeking to discuss an agreed outcome for the
nuclear controversy is to buy time and push away Washington's drive
for tough sanctions. This the Iranians have now achieved.
Fourney's statement that the United States is counting on UN sanctions
to deter Iran likewise plays into Tehran's hands, because it removes
the second bludgeon hanging over Iran's heads, that of US penalties
outside the world body. This is the only remaining option since most
of the informed sources quoted by US media in the past week view the
administration's hopes of Russia and China coming around to tough UN
sanctions as non-starters.

This wholesale US retreat on Iran leaves Israel as the only country
still holding to a military option for putting the brakes on Iran's
progress toward a nuclear bomb.
However, Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Israel's
political and military leaders are divided on the wisdom of executing
this option and attacking Iran without US support.

repeatedly called on Jerusalem to stop settlement expansion. Israeli Prime

demands, but he understands that he can't, so he's waging a PR campaign in
the United States to soften the administration's position. Netanyahu has
been saying for many years now that the president is not an autocrat and
that American foreign policy is influenced by Congress, public opinion, the
media and think tanks. Now his theory is being put to the test. Over the
past three weeks the administration has been flooded with letters by U.S.
representatives and senators, ads of support by Ron Lauder and Elie Wiesel,
editorials and columns, television interviews with the prime minister and
e-mails from Jewish supporters of Israel. They all warn, at various levels
of bluntness and harshness, that Obama is abandoning Israel in the face of
threats from Iran's nuclear program and Palestinian terror. Obama's
pressures have called Netanyahu's bluff: It's not Iran that is Netanyahu's
top priority, as he claimed before he was elected, but rather the East
Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. The fact is, the prime minister did
not call on Elie Wiesel and members of congress to warn against the "second

United States administration officials have voiced harsh criticism over
advertisements in favor of Israel's position on Jerusalem that appeared in

"All these advertisements are not a wise move," one senior American official

East Jerusalem was present in many of the comments made by senior Israeli
officials during Independence Day. Netanyahu himself said in an interview to
ABC that freezing construction in the east of the city was an impossible
demand, and refused to answer questions on the Israeli response to demands
from Washington. Instead, he called on Palestinian Authority chairman
Mahmoud Abbas to return to the negotiating table without preconditions.
Foreign Minister Lieberman, meanwhile, made Jerusalem the focal point of his
speech in a festive reception for the diplomatic corps at the President's
Residence in Jerusalem. President Shimon Peres spoke first, calling for
progress in the diplomatic process. Lieberman, who took the podium
immediately after Peres, made diametrically opposed statements in his
speech, stressing that the Palestinian Authority is no partner for peace.

The creators of the animated TV series "South Park" should be "afraid for
their lives" since there is a "very real possibility" they will end up
murdered like Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, the author of an extremist
Muslim website told WND today.

"I think it's very clear what we are saying. Under Islam, the punishment for
insulting Muhammad is death," stated Younus Abdullah Muhammad, author of
RevolutionMuslim.com.

"You saw the picture of Theo Van Gogh lying (dead) on the streets in Europe.
At the end of the day there is a very real possibility that this will be the
outcome for the 'South Park' creators," said Abdullah Muhammad, referring to
the Dutch filmmaker who was murdered by an Islamic extremist in 2004 after
making a film on Islam and violence against women.

Abdullah Muhammad was echoing threats posted on his website Sunday targeting
"South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone after an episode of their
Comedy Central network show aired last week depicted Islam's prophet
Muhammad disguised in a bear suit.

Abdullah Muhammad told WND, "We are just warning them, giving them advice
that they are not playing with a system that tolerates their kind of
behavior."

Asked specifically whether Stone and Parker should fear for their lives,
Abdullah Muhammad told WND, "Isn't that what the post said? That there will
probably be some form of retaliation."

The RevolutionMuslim.com posting stated the "South Park" duo will "probably
wind up like Theo Van Gogh for airing this show."

The Internet posting continued: "We have to warn Matt and Trey that what
they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo Van Gogh
for airing this show. This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of
what will likely happen to them."

Abdullah Muhammad told WND today, "We find it atrocious that a nation that
is presently occupying other countries, supporting the military-industrial
complex, that is harming and killing Muslims, that at the same time they
will insult a prophet we hold dear and to think there will not be
ramifications."

RevolutionMuslim.com is known for its support of the ideology of al-Qaida
and Osama bin Laden.

In February 2009, WND reported the website issued a series of videos
targeting the New York headquarters of Chabad, a Jewish outreach movement,
just two months after the group was rocked by a deadly terrorist attack in
Mumbai, India.

Videos posted on the website also asked viewers to "give the Islamic
message" to Yeshiva University, a Manhattan-based Jewish college, as well as
"Jewish Federation buildings all over the U.S." in response to the
institutions' purported funding for Israel amid its offensive against Hamas
in the Gaza Strip.

Al Gore's insistence that global warming is "settled science" has been used
to defend claims humanity is on the edge of destroying the world. Now author
Brian Sussman, whose book "Climategate" is being released Thursday – Earth
Day – agrees it's "settled," as a scam.

Sussman unveils in his book evidence that the move to restrict
carbon-dioxide emissions, tax a multitude of energy programs and create a
"Big Brother" that would limit household energy use, among other programs,
is a move to give government unlimited control over people.

National Public Radio reported in 2007 how Gore took his "climate-change
crusade" to Congress and said the science on the issue was "settled." Then
in 2009 the Environmental Protection Agency declared carbon dioxide and
other emissions are endangering the future of the world.

Sussman's book, the newest title by WND Books, has been charting for several

have taken control of the data. Further, he explains how many of the
global-warming promoters are out to make a buck for themselves.

"It's obvious to everyone that this global-warming facade is in meltdown
mode," said Joseph Farah, publisher of WND Books and founder and CEO of
WorldNetDaily.com. "Now Brian's important book comes along just in time to
reveal exactly why this Big Lie was foisted on us to begin with and what we
can do to stop it cold."

Among other things, "Climategate" reveals the underlying fraud of
environmentalism in America. It also depicts the myth that global warming is
the consensus of the scientific community.

The book traces the origins of a "climate-scare" agenda to the "diabolical
minds of Marx and Engels in the 1800s – down the ages to the global
governance of the United Nations today."

On the issue of carbon dioxide, the book points out that nature needs carbon
dioxide and generates it through multiple natural processes to ensure its
availability.

"Decomposing vegetation, the carcasses of dead animals, forest fires,
smoldering peat bogs, volcanoes, plowed soil, weathering rocks, human
utilization of fossil fuels, and even termites and crustacean shells – all
exude carbon dioxide beneficial to the plant kingdom," he writes. "And the
more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the more content the plants become –
just ask anyone who has worked in a greenhouse.

"In fact, that is a portion of the carbon-dioxide debate no one bothers to
address – the plant kingdom would abound if carbon-dioxide levels were to
increase in the global atmosphere," he writes.

WND previously reported among the topics discussed in the book is whether
there soon could be "Green Goon Squads" at your door, checking your energy
usage.

The author explains federal legislation includes a set of regulations for
energy efficiency that will be enforced "by a national, green goon squad."

"The legislation also authorizes the Secretary of Energy to 'enhance
compliance by conducting training and education of builders and other
professionals in the jurisdiction concerning the national energy-efficiency
building code.'"

Sussman warns the focus is not to save energy and money.

"It's a social-engineering scheme, designed and promoted by the federal
government to change your behavior," he said.

Pollution actually has been decreasing, significantly, he documents.

From 1980 to 2005, for example, he wrote, "Fine particulate matter declined
40 percent. Ozone levels declined 20 percent, and days per year exceeding
the 8-hour ozone standard fell seventy-nine percent. Nitrogen-dioxide levels
decreased 37 percent, sulfur dioxide dropped 63 percent and carbon-monoxide
concentrations were reduced by 74 percent. Lead levels were lowered by 96
percent."

Neither are temperatures rising, he documents.

Send President Obama, House Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Reid a
Constitution!

"Since 2007, global temperatures are engaged in a significant downward
spiral, with government data illustrating a 1°F (.65°C) drop in temperature
between 2007 and 2008 alone," he reports.

He reports on e-mails that were hacked from the Climatic Research Unit at
the University of East Anglia, which contain references to "hiding"
information.

"The Climatic Research Unit had been regarded by many as one of the most
credible atmospheric institutions in the world, but with the revelation of
the e-mail exchanges, their supposed credibility was reduced to junk
science," Sussman writes.

"The e-mails reveal that the world's leading climate scientists were working
together to block Freedom of Information requests to review their data,
marginalize dissenting scientists, manipulate the peer-review process, and
obscure, massage or delete inconvenient temperature readings. One certainly
wonders, why? Especially since Al Gore has assured the world that 'the
science is settled.'"

Taking on the EPA directly, Sussman says, "Carbon dioxide only accounts for
thirty-eight-thousandths of a percent of our planet's atmosphere. It is
known as a variable gas, because, like water vapor, it has historically
fluctuated. And what percentage of the minuscule amount of CO2 is produced
by the activities of man, including the utilization of fossil fuels?
According to a thorough analysis by the Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis
Center, a research wing of the U.S. Department of Energy, it is only 3.207
percent. All of this hoopla over an atmospheric component so minute, it is
difficult to comprehend."

What could be driving the agenda of global warming? Dollars, he suggests.

"It's widely reported that Al Gore is worth at least $100 million, although
my well-connected [source] believes it may be closer to $500 million. Quite
a success story for a guy, who, according to financial-disclosure records
released just prior to his bid for the presidency, had a net worth near $2
million," he writes.

University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit

Last December, the EPA signed two findings that concluded greenhouse gases
in the atmosphere "threaten the public health and welfare of current and
future generations." The EPA's rulings could mean thousands of dollars in
additional taxes for individual consumers.

Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Joe Barton, R-Texas, then cited
the doubts about the integrity of "climate change" science in a letter and
asked for an accounting of U.S. taxpayer support for the United Nations'
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The U.S. since 1994 has given some $50 million to the panel, and
contributions under President Obama now have doubled.

Sussman, formerly a highly acclaimed San Francisco meteorologist, also is
the newest morning host at KSFO Radio (560 AM), the highest-rated talk show
in the San Francisco Bay Area and the fourth-largest radio market in the
country.

In the original scandal that spawned the name Climategate, the hacked
e-mails of Phil Jones, head of the Climatic Research Unit in Norwich,
England, and others uncovered schemes to employ "tricks" with warming
trends, squelch skeptics and defame journals that published them.

Earth Day is all the evidence of deception needed, said Sussman. First
celebrated in 1970 on the 100th anniversary of the birth of communist leader
Vladimir Lenin, it was founded by Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wis.; former
Stanford student-body president Denis Hayes; and author and Stanford
professor Paul Ehrlich.

"Lenin's core political philosophy was linked at the hip with these newly
fangled environmentalists who maintained that America's government must be
altered, its economy planned and regulated, and its citizens better
controlled," writes Sussman. "The environment would be the perfect tool to
force these changes, and the most efficient way to gain converts would be
through the public-school system – the earlier the better."

Sen. James M. Inhofe, R-Okla., has suggested the Justice Department
investigate scientists for potentially falsifying data. And the Orange
County Register has posted a chart for consumers to try to keep up with all
the scandals developing in the "global warming" community.

Among the scandals listed are:

* ClimateGate: The scandal over the Climatic Research Unit e-mails from
East Anglia.

* FOIGate: In which British officials are investigating whether East
Anglia scientists refused to follow that nation's freedom-of-information law
about their work.

* ChinaGate: In which dozens of weather monitoring stations in rural
China apparently have simply disappeared. This would lead to higher
temperature averages since city levels frequently are warmer.

* HimalayaGate: In which an Indian climate official admitted in January
that he falsely claimed Himalayan glaciers would melt away by 2035 to prod
governments into action.

* And PachauriGates I and II, SternGates I and II, AmazonGate (in which
a claim that global warming would wipe out rain forests was exposed as a
fraud), PeerReviewGate, RussianGate I and II and nearly a dozen others.

WND also reported recently when the St. Louis–based Peabody Energy, the
largest private coal company in the world, petitioned the EPA to re-examine
its decisions in light of the controversy over the scientists' e-mails.

The company noted the "seriousness of the flaws" in the work.

Given the EPA's "extensive reliance" on those reports, "the agency has no
legal option but to re-examine the Endangerment Finding in light of this new
information," the petition said.

On its website, the company said the EPA's earlier ruling "could mean
regulation of hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of buildings,
farms, businesses and other facilities in the U.S."

Texas officials also have filed a lawsuit accusing the federal government of
using "tainted" information to arrive at the EPA conclusion and it asks that
the EPA's decisions be set aside. Virginia's attorney general, Ken
Cuccinelli, also filed a petition demanding the EPA reconsider its
greenhouse-gas finding.

The scientific community actually is anything but unanimous on climate
change.

The disunity is documented by the Petition Project, launched some 10 years
ago when the first few thousand signatures were gathered. The effort by Art
Robinson, a research professor of chemistry and cofounder of the Linus
Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in 1973, now lists tens of
thousands of qualified scientists who endorse the following statement:

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon
dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gases is causing or will, in the
foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and
disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific
evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many
beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the
Earth.

Among the original e-mails hacked from East Anglia and posted online was,
"The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and
it is a travesty that we can't. The CERES data published in the August
(Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society) 09 supplement on 2008
shows there should be even more warming: but the data are surely wrong. Our
observing system is inadequate."

Depleted uranium is destroying life

I have long heard sound-bites or seen passages about depleted uranium that
sounded more than dire. But given my own cognitive dissonance, and the fact
that I was writing about many other dire topics at the time, I filed
depleted uranium in my cranium for future investigation, which, given the
human aversion to bad news, could have been never.

But never was over in an exchange of emails about nuclear missiles in
Israel's arsenal. I received some startling nuclear information from San
Francisco Bay View writer, Bob Nichols. It was an illumination long-time
coming.

I started at the end of Bob's article to find out who he was. His credits
read "Bob Nichols is a Project Censored Award winning writer and a San
Francisco Bay View correspondent. A former bomb maker in a U.S. government
factory in rural Oklahoma, he reports on the two nuclear weapons labs in the
Bay Area. He can be reached at duweapons@gmail.com." His credentials were
impressive and so was the article he sent, PTSD, infertility and other
consequences of war.

In several, follow-up phone calls, Bob, in his gentle, mid-western drawl,
filled me in on the picture of the imposing disasters caused by depleted
uranium in Central Asia and in the Mid-East, in which hundreds of thousands
of tons of depleted uranium had been dropped in the past 20 years.

Bob pointed out that San Francisco itself was receiving fallout from the
Berkeley National [Nuclear Weapons] Lab, and from the Livermore Laboratory
in the South Bay area, managed by San Francisco-based Bechtel, a
nuclear-capable corporation, boosted by San Francisco's "Nuclear Nancy'
Pelosi and her friends at Bechtel" as Bob commented. The University of
California at Berkeley now earns more from weapons than from students.

The San Francisco facilities have been part of the Manhattan Project,
operating from pre-1945, contributing a dangerous amount of radiation to the
area with weapons testing and leakages of material into the Bay. It was for
this reason, Nichols told me, that he still lives in Oklahoma, though he has
a real love affair with San Francisco. Yet he fears for its human and
natural safety due to poisoning by the nuclear projects.

In fact, he bemoaned the occasion of "Fleet Week," "the happy boys sent off
to war by Mayor Gavin Newsom's Fleet Week – an event responsible for a big
chunk of the enlistments in the US Navy and marines – who will probably come
in deadly contact with another Bay Area product: depleted uranium, aka DU,
and weaponized ceramic uranium oxide gas and aerosols, UO."

As he wrote, "Iraq and virtually all the rest of the Middle East and Central
Asia have been continually dosed for almost 20 years with thousands of tons
of weaponized ceramic uranium oxide gas, also known as depleted uranium.

"When used as directed, the depleted uranium bullets, shells and bombs
become a lethal uranium gas or aerosol. The poison uranium oxide gas
aerosols last for billions of years and never stop indiscriminately maiming
and killing, which is a war crime in itself."

That was shocking to hear. So I did a bit of research to corroborate Bob's
claims and came upon a number of YouTube pieces, one particularly powerful
ten-minute piece called Depleted Uranium – The Ultimate Dirty Bomb.

It features Dr. Doug Rokke, US Army Health Physicist and Nuclear Medicine
Sciences Officer, as well as the internationally known Geological Scientist
and International Radiation Expert Leuren Moret. Please take ten minutes to
listen to it.

Dr. Rokke explains that as far back as 1973 [the Yom Kippur War],
radioactive materials carpeted Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. He mentions
too that DU radioactive contamination makes food and water unusable. He
explains how the huge jolts of electrical energy in a small amount of
depleted uranium can destroy human cells.

Most notably, Dr. Rooke estimates that from October/November 1991 in Gulf
War 1, 160,000 US soldiers were permanently disabled by US use of some 340
tons of depleted uranium. Ten years later that number had climbed to 221,000
and left 10,000 dead. Dr. Rooke, a victim himself of the lack of proper
post-battle examinations for DU poisoning, spoke with a tempered but
deliberate anger and frustration at the damage done to all, including
civilian populations, combatants, and himself.

Lauren Moret pointed out that as far back as 1943 depleted uranium usage,
aka "poison gas warfare" was encouraged in a government memo shown on
screen. She also tells us that the UN Human Rights Commission declared
depleted uranium as illegal. The ultimate irony she points out is that in
2003 we attacked Iraq and Saddam Hussein for possessing Weapons of Mass
Destruction, which turned out not to be true. Yet when we attacked Iraq in
2003, we dropped between 1000 to 2000 tons of depleted uranium, a known
Weapon of Mass Nuclear Destruction in a three-week period. This is a war
crime unto itself.

This all jibed with Bob Nichol's writings, especially the fact that the
damage of depleted uranium is forever, lasting billions of years in the
atmosphere, the earth and water, as it lasts on clothing, the skin, the
human body, destroying vital organs, causing birth defects of all kinds,
cancers, infertility, damage to the bones, brains, testicles and ovaries,
which applies to civilians and animals as well.

As Nichols writes, "Uranium munitions, containing weaponized uranium oxide
gas and aerosols, are used by presidential order in US war zones. Privates
and corporals do not decide to use these poisonous uranium gas weapons on
their own. No, that order comes from the American president."

"Uranium oxide gas weapons are called 'genocidal weapons.' They maim and
kill millions of people, their animals and their land. The actual targets by
the US Expeditionary Forces are the populations of Central Asia and the
Middle East, about a billion people." Remember that US forces themselves are
the victims as well of these weapons, the worst imaginable blowback.

In fact, Nichols points us towards a "Middle Eastern country that requires
all 18-year olds to join national service for several years. This country
even has a roughly comparable health care system to America for a population
of 7,233,701, according to the CIA World Factbook. This country is Israel."

Bob sent along an article from the noted Israeli paper, Haaretz, dated
3/21/2010: Study: Quality of Israeli sperm down 40% in past decade. Bob
claimed the number was fudged somewhat because from 2004-2008 there was a 10
million sperm a year drop-off. Taken to 2015, all of the nation would be
infertile. The motility of the tested sperm also indicated a drop-off. These
samples were taken from healthy young people who do not smoke.

"In Israel, too," Haaretz writes, a study was published about a year ago,
showing an increase of about 30 percent in defects in the male reproductive
system. In addition, in the past decade, the number of cases of testicular
cancer has doubled."

Haaretz goes on to attribute the sperm drop to "chemicals in the ground and
in drinking water…as impacting hormone levels and secondary sexual
characteristics." The paragraph concludes with "Studies published in Britain
have highlighted a clear connection between continual decline in sperm
counts and chemicals in the environment."

In the next to last paragraph of Bob Nichols' article, he writes of the
Israeli situation, "Since 20 percent live sperm is considered to be the
beginning of infertility, Israel will be sterile in less than 10 years at
this rate of decline. The estimated 7 million Israeli Jews will have no more
children after that. This catastrophic development has already occasioned
legislative hearings in Israel's Knesset… Israeli sperm concentration is
just an example of what is happening to human sperm all over the Middle East
and Central Asia, by the choice and force of will of successive US
presidents."

The 800-pound gorilla in the room here is that young people tested (both men
and women) are performing in the Israeli Defense Forces, and face massive
amounts of depleted uranium in the US manufactured weaponry being used in
the ongoing conflict with the Palestinians. The land, animals, and those
involved in the conflict on both sides must be, by definition, poisoned by
these toxic weapons of nuclear destruction. That's the real story. The
Israelis have performed a service in a way just by conducting a bona fide
scientific analysis of the situation.

In nearby Iraq, three-headed babies are turning up and a virtual Pandora's
Box of birth defects that you can see here. Caution: these are not pretty
pictures, but they are true pictures of what the future could be as the
present.

fact, the first DU, which uses radioactive isotope-238 was "manufactured in
the 1940's when the US and USSR began their nuclear weapons and nuclear
power programs." P.S. Depleted uranium bombs were also used on Serbia in the
Bosnian War by President Clinton.

The total world inventory of depleted uranium stands at 1,188,273 tonnes as
of 2002. That is enough to wipe out life on the planet for billions of
years.

The United States leads the pack with 480,000 tonnes; Russia closely follow
with 460,000 million tonnes; France, 190,000 tonnes; United Kingdom, 30,000
tonnes, etcetera.

As to the Legal Status of DU, Wiki reports, "In 1996 the International Court
of Justice (ICJ) gave an advisory opinion on the 'legality of the threat or
use of nuclear weapons'.[29] This made it clear, in paragraphs 54, 55 and
56, that international law on poisonous weapons—the Second Hague Declaration
of 29 July 1899, Hague Convention IV of 18 October 1907 and the Geneva
Protocol of 17 June 1925—did not cover nuclear weapons, because their prime
or exclusive use was not to poison or asphyxiate. This ICJ opinion was about
nuclear weapons, but the sentence 'The terms have been understood, in the
practice of States, in their ordinary sense as covering weapons whose prime,
or even exclusive, effect is to poison or asphyxiate,' also removes depleted
uranium weaponry from coverage by the same treaties as their primary use is
not to poison or asphyxiate, but to destroy material and kill soldiers
through kinetic energy."

What's that? The "gunman" was a Muslim? He said something about the Qur'an?
Surely not! None of that is in the AP story, which is an object lesson in
journalistic bias and obfuscation: "Source: Chicago gunman heard voices to
kill family," by Don Babwin for Associated Press, April 14:

CHICAGO - A person close to the investigation of a shooting in Chicago that
left a woman and three children dead says the gunman told police that he
committed the crime after hearing voices telling him to kill his family.

Compare that to the Chicago Tribune [which] says that "the man had converted
to Islam several years ago while serving time in prison and had a dispute
with his wife - one of the victims - because she would not adhere to his
faith. He told police that he needed to take his family back to Allah and
out of this world of sinners, a source said....The wife's sister, Shirina
Thompson, said the suspect had been talking about "going to Allah." Both
Thompson and a neighbor in Wisconsin said the man had fought with his wife
in recent days because she refused to wear Muslim garb....Letisha Larry, one
of the suspect's sisters, said her brother had been acting strange, carrying
around the Quran and telling family members that something in the book told

But AP has none of that. He was just "hearing voices."

The whole process of news gathering and news reporting needs to be
demystified, even in this Internet age, and news reports recognized not as
objective, dispassionate accounts, but as the work of human beings with
agendas. While it is possible that Kristen Schorsch, Annie Sweeney and
Cynthia Dizikes of the Tribune are simply better, more thorough reporters
than Don Babwin of AP, it is more likely that Babwin had access to exactly
the same information that showed up in the Tribune report, but chose not to
go with it.

He probably thought it would be "Islamophobic" to do so, or that to do so
would fuel one of those fabled but nonexistent "backlashes" against innocent
Muslims. So he probably decided it was better to cover up key facts about
this incident. And the thing is, Don Babwin is no worse a journalist than
thousands of others working today. He was just doing what they all do, in
large and small ways, every day.
