Human genes to be injected into goats, cows, and sheep

Scientists have been given permission to put human genes into goats, sheep
and cows for the next 20 years, to see if the animals will produce human
proteins in their milk.

But people will not be pouring the genetically modified milk on their
Weetbix just yet - the milk will be discarded.

AgResearch won Environmental Risk Management Authority approval to allow a
handful of scientists to breed and keep genetically-modified animals at the
Ruakura research facility, near Hamilton.

The work will begin with genetically modified cows, and could be expanded to
genetically modified goats within the next year.

There are no immediate plans to genetically modify sheep at Ruakura.

Simon Terry, of environmental consultancy the Sustainability Council,
welcomed conditions making it clear the milk could not be made for
commercial sale but he was concerned the 20-year time limit was three times
as long as the last GM experiment at the facility.

And he feared Ruakura would become a "GM animal warehouse" because there
were no limits on the number of animals.

Jon Carapiet, of GE-free NZ, said the decision was the beginning of a
"mega-transformation" of New Zealand agriculture.

But AgResearch's applied biotechnology head Jimmy Suttie said there were no
plans to release any genetic material into the food chain.

He said human genetic material in the animals would be "switched on" only in
the mammary glands of lactating animals, leaving the beasts otherwise
unchanged.

AgResearch hopes human proteins made by the animals could eventually be used
to make "biopharmaceuticals" to treat rare human diseases and boost New
Zealand's income in the pharmaceuticals market.

Keeping GM goats will be a first for the facility, and people who spoke at
the public hearing on the application were eager to warn the company about
goats' incredible abilities to escape.

Dr Suttie said any human DNA used would almost certainly not be from a
traceable person. It was now possible to build wholly synthetic human genes
in a test tube using information bought from overseas databanks, he said.
Agresearch has said it will not use Maori DNA because of cultural concerns.

Meanwhile, ERMA is considering broader plans by AgResearch to modify
livestock to make antigens, biopharmaceuticals, enzymes, hormones and other
products after the Court of Appeal overturned a High Court decision blocking
the applications.

It was just a phrase at the end of President Obama's news conference on
Tuesday, but it was a stark reminder of a far-reaching shift in how the
United States views the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how aggressively
it might push for a peace agreement. When Mr. Obama declared that resolving
the long-running Middle East dispute was a "vital national security interest
of the United States," he was highlighting a change that has resulted from a
lengthy debate among his top officials over how best to balance support for
Israel against other American interests. This shift, described by
administration officials who did not want to be quoted by name when
discussing internal discussions, is driving the White House's urgency to
help broker a Middle East peace deal. It increases the likelihood that Mr.
Obama, frustrated by the inability of the Israelis and the Palestinians to
come to terms, will offer his own proposed parameters for an eventual
Palestinian state. Mr. Obama said conflicts like the one in the Middle East
ended up "costing us significantly in terms of both blood and treasure" —
drawing an explicit link between the Israeli-Palestinian strife and the
safety of American soldiers as they battle Islamic extremism and terrorism
in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

This week on 'The Hal Lindsey Report'
On this week's edition of "The Hal Lindsey Report": This week, President
Obama hosted the largest gathering of heads of state in the US since the
founding of the UN in San Francisco in 1945. He convened the "Nuclear
Security Summit." Ostensibly, the goal of the summit was to encourage
nations to secure their stockpiles of nuclear materials and weapons to keep
them out of the hands of terrorists and rogue states.

However, word leaked out that Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, and Pakistan were
planning to ambush Israel to demand that it declare its nuclear weapons
arsenal. Some suspect the US was even in on the plan. So Israeli PM
Netanyahu decided to skip the summit and foil the plot. Since the media was
mostly banned from covering the summit sessions, we'll never know for
certain if that was indeed the plan or what the summit actually
accomplished.

It should be obvious to everyone by now that President Obama isn't exactly
going to be Israel's best friend. In fact, he seems to consistently
sympathize with the Arab/Muslim/Palestinian cause. I've wondered, "Why is
the White House more outraged at an Israeli plan to build apartment
buildings in Jerusalem that it is over the Iranian plan to build nuclear
weapons?" I believe the reason is that Mr. Obama views Israel as the CAUSE
of the Arab-Israeli conflict. That should come as no surprise, though.
Anti-Semitism was a theme of his pastor for 20 years. He must have heard
something he liked or agreed with else why would he have stayed in the
church for two decades?

Evidence is leaking out that the US may be trying to freeze out Israel's
nuclear establishment. Israeli scientists say they are now having difficulty
obtaining visas to come to America to study at our universities and attend
conferences and symposiums. Further, some of those scientists believe the US
has imposed an unofficial embargo on parts and supplies for Israel's aging,
French-built nuclear reactor at Dimona. One of the major factors
contributing to Israel's survival for the last 60 years in a very tough
neighborhood is its policy of "nuclear ambiguity." Do they or do they not
have nuclear weapons? That doubt (and the Israelis' infamous "Samson
Option") is precisely why the surrounding quarter of a billion Arab Muslims
have not tried another invasion for the past 35 years. It now appears,
though, that the US is taking steps to force Israel into signing the Nuclear
Non- Proliferation Treaty and revealing its strengths... or weaknesses.

The White House has devised a new plan for peace in Israel -- one that it
intends to IMPOSE on the tiny nation. I'll cover the details on the show,
but suffice it to say that portions of the plan reveal the President's
shallow understanding of the dynamics at work. Or, it may imply that he does
understand and it simply fits into a more sinister plan for the region.

The Prime Minister of Malaysia recently castigated the Muslim world for not
having a plan for "final victory" in Palestine. That's ominous. Anytime I
hear the word "final" used in connection with Israel's future, certain
images spring to mind. And trust me, those images are not far off the mark
this time, either.

All of this has a familiar ring, doesn't it? It sounds exactly like the
solution the prophet Daniel predicted for Israel in the days just before the
true Messiah returns. And though I don't believe the stars of the final act
are onstage yet, I think the present actors are moving things in the
prophesied direction.

Finally, I want to share a couple of thoughts on the occasion of the tragic
death of Poland's president, along with his wife and many leaders from that
great country. Lech Kaczynski was a valued ally of America. And, as you
know, we don't have many of those left.

Liberal Evangelicals Joining Old Religious Left in D.C. Immigration March
[Excerpts]

Joining with groups like ACORN, a wide coalition of religious left groups
marched in Washington, D.C. on March 21 on behalf of eventual amnesty and
largely open borders under the banner of Comprehensive Immigration Reform
(CIR). The National Council of Churches (NCC) is hailing CIR as a divine
mandate and a patriotic act.

"We hope to show the moral urgency of repairing America's broken immigration
system," explained an immigration spokesman for the National Council of
Churches and its relief arm, Church World Service. "It will be demonstrated
in a dramatic display of unity among supporters of comprehensive immigration
reform -- people of faith, immigrant rights groups, labor groups, and others
from all across the United States."

United Methodist, Episcopal, and Presbyterian agencies, the National Council
of Churches, Sojourners, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), and
left-wing Catholic orders are endorsing the march.

The event, titled "March For America: Change Takes Courage and Faith," was
co-sponsored by the group Reform Immigration for America, whose members
include ACORN, CodePink, National Council of LaRaza, National Gay and
Lesbian Task Force, and People for the American Way, among others, including
labor groups like the AFL-CIO.

Institute on Religion and Democracy President Mark Tooley commented: "Once
again, the religious left is exploiting 'faith' to advance and echo the
secular left's hard core agenda. Its activists will gather on the U.S.
Capitol's West Lawn to insist that God opposes well-regulated borders for
the U.S.

"Divine commands for fairness and justice do not automatically equal
liberalized immigration, any more than they equate to socialized medicine,
global warming alarmism, or American disarmament.

"The religious left, uncomfortable with the theology and moral teachings of
its own traditions, prefers the supposed clarity and liberation of left-wing
activism."
