This is in continuation of the previous mail highlighting some of the points
from the wonderful class of H.G. Devakinandan prabhu, our beloved God
brother in Singapore who visited Chennai in May 2010 and gave very
instructive and practical explanations on the following verse from Srimad
Bhagavatam 3.9.23

In Srimad Bhagavatam verse 3.9.23, Lord Brahma prays as follows

*esha prapanna-varado ramayaatma-shaktyaa
yad yat karishyati grheeta-gunaavataarah
tasmin sva-vikramam idam srjato 'pi ceto
yunjeeta karma-shamalam ca yathaa vijahyaam *

"*The Supreme Lord, the Personality of Godhead, is always the benefactor of
the surrendered souls. His activities are always enacted through His
internal potency, Ramaa, or the goddess of fortune. I pray only to engage in
His service in the creation of the material world, and I pray that I not be
materially affected by my works, for thus I may be able to give up the false
prestige of being the creator.*"

2. *What should be our actual prayer *?

In the last mail it was mentioned that Brahmaji is teaching us by his
example as to what our actual prayers should be. Here Lord Brahma is praying
*I pray only to engage in His service in the creation of the material world,
and I pray that I not be materially affected by my works, for thus I may be
able to give up the false prestige of being the creator.*'

If we go through Brahmaji's prayers in the second canto, he prays in 2.9.29
and 30 as follows:

"*Please tell me so that I may be taught in the matter by the instruction of
the Personality of Godhead and may thus act instrumentally to generate
living entities, without being conditioned by such activities. O my Lord,
the unborn, You have shaken hands with me just as a friend does with a
friend [as if equal in position]. I shall be engaged in the creation of
different types of living entities, and I shall be occupied in Your service.
I shall have no perturbation, but I pray that all this may not give rise to
pride, as if I were the Supreme.*"

We should just think why should the greatest personality chant the same
prayer twice? Brahmaji is so powerful that when Narada muni was created and
when he saw that Brahma was creating the material creation so wonderfully,
Narada was definite in the beginning that Brahma is the all in all. But it
is only after one action of Brahmaji that Narada raised a doubt as to the
presence a personality superior to Brahmaji. Narada saw that Brahmaji was
always chanting prayers while creating, in glorification of the Lord. This
shows the humility of Brahmaji. Brahma immediately directed Narada telling
that he is not the all in all. When yamadutas came to Yamaraj in the episode
of Ajamila, Yamaraj quickly responded saying 'I am not taking credit for
anything. All the principles of religion are only coming from the Supreme
Lord.' This shows the mood of a devotee that he never takes credit for
anything. In the material world, Maharaj always says, when there is a
problem we blame Krishna or someone else.

There is a nice story in Panchatantra. Once there was a Brahmana who had a
very nice garden and in that garden he grew so many nice things and when
everybody asked who did this, the Brahmana was very happy and he proudly
proclaimed, 'I did this. I did that. I have green fingers' so on and so
forth. So he was very happy and for everything he was taking all the credit
for himself. One day a cow entered the garden and started chewing all the
plants. So the Brahmana was so angry that all his hard work is being
destroyed. He took a stick and started beating the cow. A Brhamana is
supposed to protect the cows but now he lost all his common sense. When you
take credit for everything, you lose all common sense and you start beating
those persons who are showing you the constructive reason why you should not
take the credit. He beat the cow until it died. The village chief summoned
him and told him that he was to be hanged for the crime. The Brahmana
started thinking how to get out of this problem. He though that there must
be something in the scriptures to save him. The Brahmana approached the
village chief and accepted that he beat the cow but he did not kill it. The
village head wondered how it was possible. He started explaining, 'you see,
in the shastras it is said that each part of the body is under the control
of a demigod. Thus the demigod has a higher control. I am just an
instrument. So it is Indra who is to be blamed because he is the presiding
deity of the hand. 'Now word started spreading that Indra killed the cow,
until it reached svargaloka and Indra got disturbed about this reverse
publicity. He was wondering that he has never even seen the cow. Indra came
down in the form of a small boy and walked into the garden of the Brahmana.
He met the Brahmana and very much appreciated him for the beautiful garden.
As usual the Brahmana started explaining how with hard endeavor he is
watering and taking care of then plants. Eventually Indra got fed up and he
said, 'Stop Brahmana. For everything you are saying that your hands has done
everything. But when it comes to killing the cow, it is my hand that killed
and not yours. This is absolute nonsense.'

The moral we learn from this is that when things are bad, we do not stop to
take the responsibility. When things are good, we cannot stop taking credit.
Here we see how Brahmaji is praying that he may be able to give up the false
prestige of being the creator. In one of the verses in Srimad Bhagavatam,
Brahmaji gives the reason as to how he has been able to develop this mood
and attitude. Krishna willing, I shall post this reason and the other
explanations by Devaki prabhu in the ensuing mails.

In the last mail it was mentioned that all of us in the deepest and darkest
recesses of our hearts, have our prayers. The good thing is that we should
direct all prayers to Krishna. Sukadeva goswami instructs us in this regard
in Srimad Bhagavatam 2.3.10

*akaamah sarva-kaamo vaa / moksha-kaama udaara-dhih
tivrena bhakti-yogena / yajeta purusham param *

*"A person who has broader intelligence, whether he be full of all material
desire, without any material desire, or desiring liberation, must by all
means worship the supreme whole, the Personality of Godhead."*

But these prayers directed to the Supreme Lord must have one qualification,
and that is the word 'tivrena bhakti yogena'. They must be focussed only on
Krishna and if they are relly focussed on Krishna, then the motives behind
the prayers must give way to glorificaton of Krishna, because if we are
really approaching Krishna as Brahmaji is approaching , then we have to
approach Krishna through His internal potency. Krishna is attracted to us on
the basis of our bhakti. If we mix that bhakti with material intentions,
then even though we open the pages of Srimad Bhagavatam, Bhagavatam does not
reveal itself to us. Sukadev goswami makes it a point to explain this at the
very start of this manual so that no one can turn around and question later
how come you did not explain this. The very first verse of Srimad Bhagavatam
establishes the supremacy of Krishna. Janmaadyasya yatah.. There is no one
else except Krishna. Krishna is the all in all for us. But immediately in
the second verse, he makes it very very clear that in order for us to
approach and understand the supremacy of Krishna, there is only one way in
which we can accept Bhagavatam into our lives and that is by

*dharmah projjhita-kaitavo 'tra paramo nirmatsaraanaam sataam *

"*Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially
motivated, this Bhagavata Purana propounds the highest truth, which is
understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart.*"

We must reject any semblance of the material fruitive intentions in our
study of Srimad Bhagavatam and devotional service. The moment there is a
thread running through, it will cause us disturbance. The reason for the
disturbance is that we are not approaching Srimad Bhagavatam in the correct
way. So we do not have to blame anyone. The blame game stops with us.
Otherwise we have thousands of reasons to tell why we are not coming to
Srimad Bhagavatam. The question we have to ask ourselves is whether we are
rejecting everything else to come to Srimad Bhagavatam. If we try to do that
withourt material intentions, then three things happen when we sit dowm to
read Srimad Bhagavatam. That is mentioned in SB 4.30.35

*yatredyante kathaa mrshtaah / trshnaayaah prashamo yatah
nirvairam yatra bhuteshu / nodvego yatra kashcana *

*"Whenever pure topics of the transcendental world are discussed, the
members of the audience forget all kinds of material hankerings, at least
for the time being. Not only that, but they are no longer envious of one
another, nor do they suffer from anxiety or fear.*

When we come together to glorify Krishna, then if Krishna is pleased, three
things will happen to us.

*Trshnaayaah prashamo yatah*: We forget all kinds of material hankerings.

*Nirvairam yatra bhuteshu*: We are no longer envious of one another. Imagine
if the function was a wedding or an engagement, everyone will be looking at
everyone to see what clothes or jewellery they are wearing. But in a
gathering where we are trying to hear Srimad Bhagavatam, nobody is looking
at each other. Frankly nobody is bothered how each other looks.

*Nodvego yatra kashcana*: there is no anxiety or fear.

The challenge is to keep these things going after we leave this room. How
are we going to do that? Brahmaji is giving the answer. This is the beauty
of Bhagavatam that for every Bhagavatam statement, there is a devotee who
shows us his behaviour. It is our duty to follow in the footsteps of that
devotee.* Not to make a statement but to live that statement*. This is
Bhagavatam. Otherwise we will always remain on theoretical level. Then we
wonder why I am chanting for ten years and there is no taste. Why there is
so much anxiety? Why is it a struggle to get up for mangala arathi? While I
know that life is short term, why I am making so many long term plans?

So let us try to understand and follow the mood of Lord Brahmaji in not
taking credit for anything knowing that we are only instruments in the hands
of the Supreme Lord. Krishna willing, Devaki prabhu's explanation on this
shall be posted in the ensuing mail.

Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila
Prabhupada and Gurudev!

This is in continuation of the previous mails highlighting some of the
points from the wonderful class of H.G. Devakinandan prabhu, our beloved God
brother in Singapore who visited Chennai in May 2010 and gave very
instructive and practical explanations on Srimad Bhagavatam 3.9.23.

2.*What should be our actual prayer*?

In the last mail it was mentioned that Brahmaji is teaching us by his
example as to what our actual prayers should be. Brahmaji is praying that
let him be engaged in the sevice of the Lord but let him not be materially
affected by his works and also he prays that he may be able to give up the
false prestige of being the creator. In Srimad Bhagavatam 2.6.34, Brahmaji
speaks a wonderful verse and this qualifies Brahma's attitude in the verse
3.9.23.

*na bhaarati me' nga mrshopalakshyate / na vai kvacin me manaso mrshaa gatih

na me hrishikaani patanty asat-pathe / yan me hrdautkanthyavataa dhrto harih
*

"*O Narada, because I have caught hold of the lotus feet of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, Hari, with great zeal, whatever I say has never
proved to have been false. Nor is the progress of my mind ever deterred. Nor
are my senses ever degraded by temporary attachment to matter.*"

So the focus of Brahmaji here is only one thing and that is dhrto harih –
catching the lotus feet of Lord Hari with great zeal and because of this
qualification, Brahmaji is free from three things.

1. Whatever Brahmaji says has never proved to be false.
2. The progress of the mind is never deterred. Otherwise when we grow old,
we become senile. Maharaj says that our sharpness of the mind never goes
because we are with Krishna and this is the way to combat senility.
3. The senses are never degraded by temporary attachment to matter.

When we catch hold of the lotus feet of the Lord, a devotee gets the mood of
Brahmaji.

The secret of approaching Krishna is to glorify Him. While starting this
prayer, Brahmaji is addressing the Lord as *prapanna varadah* - *the
benefactor of the surrenedered souls*. This is the way he starts his prayer.
He doesn't start saying, 'O Lord, somehow or the other, I may be engaged in
Your service.' He starts by glorifying Krishna. The secret to really
approach Krishna is to glorify Krishna. *If we do not glorify Krishna, then
we lose the qualifiation to pray to Him*. Except for Krishna, no one else
should be glorified. Krishna means the devotees also and for us when we are
asked who is the pure devotee we should glorify, then we should follow what
Maharaj always told us – that "*except for our own self everyone else is a
pure devotee*". If we have that mood in loving devotional service, then we
will never feel when a devotee tells us, 'Prabhu, do this'. Otherwise we
feel who is he asking me to do. If we really appreciate that someone is a
greater devotee than us, we should be ready to execute anything. For this
the mind should be properly guided. As Srila Prabhupada states in his
purport to SB 5.11.17 '*Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thaakura used to say
that to control the mind one should beat it with shoes many times just after
awakening and again before going to sleep. In this way one can control the
mind. This is the instruction of all the shaastras. If one does not do so,
one is doomed to follow the dictations of the mind.*'

We have to keep on telling the mind that '*I am not the doer*'. Otherwise
the rascal mind will always counteract the mood of a devotee. That is why ,
Brahmaji to purify himself, before he starts the prayer, he glorifies
Krishna. We are not here to expand the preaching. We are here to glorify the
Lord. Preaching is the by product of glorification. It is natural and it
comes with no separate endeavor. So never come for a program for a social
reason. Brahmaji says in his prayer that the Lord's activities are always
enacted through His internal potency called Rama or the goddess of fortune
who bestows all the opulences.

Krishna willing, Devaki prabhu's explanation on what is the real opulence
shall be posted in the forthcoming mail.

Dear All,

With deep pains (and tears in my eyes), I am sad to inform you that
yesterday morning, one of my dear friend's elder son (Mr. Aditya
Suresh Joshi), age 19, studying in 1st year engineering, died in
Keshvani Hospital, Mumbai. He was admitted in Keshavani Hospital as *burned
patient.*

Reason 4 days back this boy had gone to Amravati (One of the district place
located in State of Maharashtra) on study tour. After their study was over
his classmates & teachers, all of them were standing on "Badnera"railway
station to catch the train. "Badnera" is the name of the railway station for
"Amravati "city.

As soon as they arrived on Badnera Railway station, many of them started
taking pictures of their friends using *"Mobile Phones"* and/or *"Digital
Camera"*. One of them complained that, in his camera, he was not able to
capture more number of friends in one frame. He was not able to catch the
angle. Another boy suggested climbing on to the train boogie and take
picture so that all of them can be accommodated in a single frame.

There was one goods wagon (all of them were oil tankers) train resting
between 2 main railway lines.

*Kumar Aditya* climbed up the oil boogie. Above his head, 40,000
volts electrical line was passing through. As soon as he clicked the
digital camera *40,000* *volt current passed through the camera flash light*
*to his camera and then* *from his camera to his fingers and then from his
fingers* t*o his body.* All this happened within seconds. Next moment he was
thrown from the top. His body was half burned on the spot.

At that time, his father (my friend) was traveling in Bangkok . His
many friends in Pune came to know about this via mobile SMS. They instantly
arranged air ambulance in Amravati and his burned body was brought to
Keshavani Hospital , Mumbai. I was told that this is the best hospital
in Mumbai. Prior to the incident i.e. few days ago he was talking to his
relatives. When he was admitted to the hospital, doctor informed

his relatives that don't keep any great hopes. Because of lot of complexity
issues in a half burned body. *He died yesterday morning.*

Now how many of us are aware about this technological threats &

dangers? Honestly, Kumar Aditya and his father were not aware. His family
was not aware. Our entire friend circle of more than 12,000, we were not
aware. Now should we call ourselves as fully educated and fully
knowledgeable people? Think of it.

*Please avoid mobile phones at* *petrol outlets. * *Please avoid talking on
mobile **phones while* *driving. *I also know many friends who do not
bother about this good suggestion and many of them have opted for a
"couldn't care less attitude". *Please avoid talking on mobile phones while
they are in* *charging mode*. *Avoid charging mobile phones* *near
your bed*and/or near wooden furniture.
*Avoid using mobile phones and flash lights near high voltage
electrical* *lines
like railway stations. *My friends, his family members learned our lesson
with the loss of a young life. Now would you like to empower your friends
about this accident so as to avoid future accidents?

We can save human life by empowering all friends who are in your network? I
