Nine of Wands

Meanings

Keeping vigil. You have reached the apex you sought – now what?
Assaults will come, but you are well defended, you have the strength
and weapons you need at your disposal.

Reversed

Resistance. Just when you thought the tower was conquered, you find
that there are still defenders hidden within. Perhaps a truce, a more
peaceful solution, is the answer?

Description

A woman in a fine red and gold gown stands on top of a castle wall.
She holds a wand and eight more lean between the battlements of the
castle. She wears many opulent jewels and an ornate peaked cap. Her
head is bandaged and she wrings her hands and purses her lips as
though concerned.

This is Henry VIII's third wife, Jane Seymour, who died shortly after
giving him what he most wanted, a son. Historians are divided on the
issue of Jane. She was the least educated of Henry's wives and could
scarcely write her own name, so there are no letters of her own by
which to judge her character and actions. She has been variously
pictured as a meek and mousy maid who happened to be in the right
place at the right time, to a ruthless schemer who planned the
downfall of her mistress so she could take her place at Henry's side.

The Nine of Wands

When we reach deep inside ourselves, with a heart that is unafraid and
accepting, we will discover new depths of strength and power. These
deep reaches of wisdom, which lay dormant with in the subconscious
until we are brave enough to search them out, will bring balance and
equilibrium. And from new centredness will arise an unshakeable trust
in ourselves that will carry us forward through life.

It's true that when we travel deep inside ourselves, we will also find
material that we might prefer to leave unacknowledged - but the 9 of
Wands, Lord of Strength, reminds us that in being true to ourselves we
release energies that will help us to deal with whatever we find
within. And after all, whatever lies inside our own subconscious is,
for better or for worse, a part of us.

When the 9 of Wands turns up in a reading, we can be re-assured that
we have what it takes to get by. Even in times of stress and
difficulty, inner strength will rise up to guide us forward toward our
goals. And in the process we shall learn more about ourselves and our
abilities, gaining a new all-round perspective which brings security
and self-confidence.

This card tells us to trust ourselves. We have everything we need.
There is no necessity to analyse nor question. And absolutely no
excuse to give in to doubt!

Working with the Nine of Wands

The Lord of Strength relates to our own inner strength and power. When
he comes up, we need to allow ourselves to be reminded of our personal
wealth of experience, knowledge and talents. This is something that we
rarely take time out to assess and consider. Yet since we are
constantly adding to it, it is something we should sum up as often as
our bank accounts.

When we get a clear view of our own strengths, we gather to us a new
sense of self-confidence, holding ourselves in high esteem, and
treating ourselves as good and trusted friends. This fundamental
acceptance of ourselves is essential to allow us a long-term feeling
of well-being and optimism.

So on a day ruled by the Lord of Strength, we must count our personal
strengths. This obviously raises a simple question....how do you know
what is strong?

The quickest way to identify strengths is to look at the hardest
experiences of your life, and assess how you feel you handled them. If
you maintain a non-judgemental and objective perspective upon your
actions, then you'll see that, over the years, you have learned to
deal with trials and tribulations increasingly efficiently. Every
single time you pass through a trying experience, you will have
gathered more understanding about how to approach difficulties and
resolve them.

Your mistakes have special messages for you. To be able to admit you
could have dealt with a situation better is, if you allow it to be,
one of the most useful revelations of your life. Rather than feeling
bad about your actions, allow yourself to consider what would have
improved the outcome. Once you have done this, you'll store that away
as new knowledge...and next time a similar situation occurs you'll
remember, and act accordingly. Never be afraid of assessing your
mistakes....there's one very big thing to be said for them - they are
all yours!!!! And they can be teachers if you let them be.

Having worked through the obvious strengths and frailties, go looking
for the more subtle aspects of strength....empathy, compassion,
patience, morality, humour, respect, honesty, understanding,
sensitivity.....there are many many things that we might not at first
count among our strengths that make us stronger people.

Affirmation: I acknowledge and grow into my strength.

NINE OF WANDS

The Lord of Great Strength

Attribution - Moon in Sagittarius

The suit of Wands represents the element of fire. It is the intuitive
function, the libido, the primitive life force.

Some associations are: career, creativity, energy, desire, action,
intuition, sex, movement, victory, enthusiasm, confidence,
competition, magic and excellence.

Nines are about nearing the end, the final stage, dreams, courage,
mastery, letting go and terminating properly.

Rider-Waite Imagery

The suit of wands is associated with the element of fire and is
concerned with inspiration, creativity and growth. The number nine
represents completion and final effort. The main figure on this card
is a man holding a wand. There are 8 more wands behind him. He is
looking to the left (contraction & severity). He is wearing a white
headband that is slightly a skewed. He is wearing an orange tunic,
white shirt (purity), brown belt, yellow tights and green boots. He is
standing on a gray stage. There are green mountain ranges in the
background (natural limitations and boundaries).

The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite (1911)

The figure leans upon his staff and has an expectant look, as if
awaiting an enemy. Behind are eight other staves, erect, in orderly
disposition, like a palisade.

Divinatory Meanings

all its possible adjuncts; delay, suspension, adjournment.

On This Day:

Friday January 6, 2012

This is the 6th day of the year, with 360 days remaining in 2012.

Fact of the Day: birthday parties

The tradition of birthday parties started in Europe a long time ago.
It was feared that evil spirits were particularly attracted to people
on their birthdays. To protect them from harm, friends and family
would to come be with the birthday person and bring good thoughts and
wishes. Giving gifts brought even more good cheer to ward off the evil
spirits. This is how birthday parties began. At first it was only
kings who were recognized as important enough to have a birthday
celebration (maybe this is how the tradition of birthday crowns
began?). As time went by, children became included in birthday
celebrations. The first children's birthday parties occurred in
Germany and were called Kinderfeste.
