SPRING-LOADED TOWARD THE SPIRIT
Galatians 5:16
Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh

When we first became Christians, we were like one-third horsepower lawn
mower engines. We could accomplish something, but not very much because we
weren't very mature. Our ambition as Christians is to become engines that
can power earth-moving machinery--real powerhouses for the Lord. But
neither a lawn mower nor a bulldozer can accomplish anything without gas.
And neither can we accomplish anything apart from Christ (John 15:5). No
matter how mature you are, you can never be productive unless you are
walking in the Spirit.

When it comes to the choice between walking according to the flesh and
walking according to the Spirit, our will is like a toggle switch. The new
Christian's will seems to be spring-loaded toward fleshly behavior. He is
still the unwitting victim of a thoroughly trained flesh which only knows
how to operate independently of God. The mature Christian's will is
spring-loaded toward the Spirit. He makes occasional poor choices, but he
is learning to crucify the flesh and walk in the Spirit on a daily basis.

If you re hoping for a magic formula or a list of foolproof steps for
walking in the Spirit, you will be disappointed. The moment you reduce the
Spirit-filled walk to a formula or an intellectual exercise, you probably
won't be Spirit-filled anymore.

The Holy Spirit is a "He," not an "it." Our walk with God is a personal
experience, not a mechanical or legalistic formula. We see the immorality
of fleshly indulgence everywhere, but simply preaching against it and
telling people to shape up is not God's answer. The law is powerless to
give life (Galatians 3:21). Reintroducing the law to believers won't work.
But if we learn to walk by the Spirit, we won't carry out the desires of
the flesh. Let's encourage others to do the same.

Prayer: Lord, I desire to be patient with others in their walk of faith as
You are patient with me. Help me have a gracious response and a gentle
answer to others today.

Read Genesis 31 – 33
Highlights:
Laban's jealousy; Jacob flees; Jacob wrestles with the Angel of God; his
name changed to Israel; peace between Jacob and Esau.
God blessed Jacob. But the greed and jealousy of Laban and his sons
resulted in a hostile attitude toward Jacob, the servant of God. The LORD
said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers . . . and I will be
with thee. . . . I am the God of Bethel, where thou . . . vowedst a vow
(made a pledge) unto Me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return
unto the land of thy kindred (Gen. 31:3,13).
After 20 years, Jacob was returning home with his 2 wives, 2 concubines, 11
sons and 1 daughter, and many servants and flocks. Esau, who had
maliciously threatened to kill Jacob (27:41-45), was approaching with 400
men and Jacob was greatly afraid (32:3,6-7). He hastily divided his wives,
children, servants, and flocks into two groups, reasoning that if Esau
should come upon one camp and destroy it, the remaining camp could escape
in the opposite direction.
Then, in the dark of night, Jacob was left alone. He earnestly prayed and
reminded the Lord that He had said: Return unto thy country, and to thy
kindred, and I will deal well with thee (32:9). There is a lesson to be
learned from Jacob. We need to know what God has said, and then we too need
to rely on His promises. Most important, Jacob was praying for the
fulfillment of the Covenant promise concerning the Messiah that God had
made to His grandfather Abraham (22:18; 26:4; comp. Acts 3:25).
This godly and humble servant of the Lord spent the night alone with God,
prevailing in prayer. Following this, he was conferred with the highest
honor given by God to any man in Old Testament history: Thy name shall be
called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God
and with men, and hast prevailed (overcome) (Gen. 32:28). Through the
centuries, the people of God would be called by his name — Israelites.
Through his son Judah, Jesus the Messiah was promised (49:10).
We too are in a Covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ our
Savior and our Mediator, who declared that the Christian life also requires
struggle: Strive to enter in at the strait (narrow) gate: for many, I say
unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able (Luke 13:24; Matt.
7:13-14).
Even though we are faced with many difficulties, like Jacob we can, through
prevailing prayer, be overcomers because Jesus promised: In the world ye
shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world
(John 16:33).
Thought for Today:
There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but
will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to
bear it (I Cor. 10:13).
Christ Revealed:
As the Angel (Messenger) of God who guides (Gen. 31:11-13). The Angel
speaks not merely in the Name of God but as God, leaving no doubt that He
is the Lord Jesus in His preincarnate state. I and My Father are One (John
10:30).
Word Studies:
31:1 glory, wealth; 31:19 images, family idols; 31:30 sore longedst after,
greatly longed to return home; 31:36 chode, argued; 32:2 host, army
encampment; 32:16 drove, herd; 32:25 hollow, hip socket; 32:28 hast
prevailed, have overcame; 32:31 halted, limped; 33:2 hindermost, last;
33:14 softly, slowly; 33:17 booths, temporary shelters (tabernacles) (Lev.
23:42-43).

Genesis 18

The birth of Isaac is promised.
INSIGHT
Don't you love hospitality? Isn't it a pleasant experience to enter
someone's home and feel welcome? Hospitality is the mark of an open and
giving heart.
The secret to hospitality is love. If you love your guests and go out of
your way to make them feel loved, you will be an exceptional host or
hostess.
Hospitality is such an important Christian character trait that elders in
the church must be "hospitable" (1 Timothy 3:2).
Abraham was a man given to hospitality. Likewise, hospitality should be a
trait in our own lives.
PRAYER
· In full confidence in the character of God, offer your praise to Him
through these psalms:

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous!
For praise from the upright is beautiful
(Psalm 33:1).

But I will hope continually,
And will praise You yet more and more.
My mouth shall tell of Your righteousness
And Your salvation all the day,
For I do not know their limits
(Psalm 71:14-15).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord:

I return to the Lord, my God,
For He is gracious and merciful,
Slow to anger, and of great kindness;
And He relents from doing harm
(based on Joel 2:13).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

God was manifested in the flesh,
Justified in the Spirit,
Seen by angels,
Preached among the Gentiles,
Believed on in the world,
Received up in glory (1 Timothy 3:16).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:

· greater commitment to the Lord,
· the work of specific Christian ministries,
· today's activities.

· Offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:

Let the words of my mouth and the
meditation of my heart
Be acceptable in Your sight,
O Lord, my strength and my Redeemer
(Psalm 19:14).

Knowing and Doing God's Will

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your
paths straight."(Prov. 3:5-6).
George Mueller was a pastor in England during the nineteenth century who
knew what it meant to live a life that was focused on knowing and doing the
will of God. God led him in a walk of faith that has become an incredible
testimony to all who hear his story.
Whenever he lacked for something, he prayed for the resources. During his
ministry in Bristol, England, George built four orphan houses that cared
for 2,000 children at the time. When he died at the age of 93, over 10,000
children had been provided for through his orphanages, and he had
distributed over eight million dollars that had been given to him in answer
to prayer.
How did he know and do the will of God?
"I never remember a period that I ever sincerely and patiently sought to
know the will of God by the teaching of the Holy Ghost, through the
instrumentality of the Word of God, but I have been always directed
rightly." Here is how George summed up the way he entered into a "heart"
relationship with God and learned to discern God's voice:
1) "I seek at the beginning to get my heart into such a state that it has
no will of its own in regard to a given matter.
2) Having done this, I do not leave the result to feeling or simple
impression. If so, I make myself liable to great delusions.
3) I seek the will of the Spirit of God through, or in connection with, the
Word of God. The Spirit and the Word must be combined.
4) Next, I take into account providential circumstances. These often
plainly indicate God's will in connection with His Word and Spirit.
5) I ask God in prayer to reveal His will to me aright.
Thus, (1) through prayer to God, (2) the study of the Word, and (3)
reflection, I come to a deliberate judgment according to the best of my
ability and knowledge, and if my mind is thus at peace, and continues so
after two or three more petitions, I proceed accordingly."*
Consider these five steps when discerning God's voice in your life.

Are You Asking God the Wrong Question?
Sharon Jaynes
Today's Truth
Cease striving and know that I am God, (Psalm 46:10, NASB).
Friend to Friend
Could it be that we have made our relationship with God far too difficult?
We strive so hard to draw closer to the heart of God. And all the while,
God's outstretched hand is reaching to draw us in. Psalm 46:10 reads,
"cease striving and know that I am God" (NASB).
Cease striving.
For over a half of a century, I had been striving, pursuing, and seeking
God. And like a cat chasing her tail, I had been going in circles. Circling
in the wilderness with the Israelites, if you will. Saved from slavery, for
sure. Headed to my own personal Promised Land, hopefully. But somehow stuck
in the wilderness wandering, ever circling but not quite reaching Jordan's
shore.
And I am not alone. Statistics show that one of the top desires of
Christians is to grow closer to God. During a recent poll, sixty-five
percent said they were declining or on a plateau in their spiritual growth.
On the other hand, Peter wrote: "His divine power has given us everything
we need for life and godliness" (2 Peter 1:3). We have everything we need
to experience the ever growing, continually maturing, abundant life, so why
aren't we? Why are most of us languishing on the desert plateaus of
mediocrity and complacency? Why are most of us satisfied munching on the
predigested truths of teachers rather than pulling up to the banquet table
and feasting with God at a table set for two?
"God, what do you really want from me?"
I've pondered that question since the genesis of my relationship with
Christ. Perhaps you have too. When you boil down all the water from the
diluted soup of questions men and women have simmered in their heart
through the centuries, this is the one question left in the pot. And
somehow, we feel that if we could answer that one question, we would
discover why that glory ache persists and how to satisfy our yearning.
I had asked the question a thousand times, but one frosty January morning,
I got quiet enough to listen. And then, in the stillness, He showed me that
I and my busy sisters have been asking the wrong question.
Rather than ask God what He wants from us, we need to ask Him what He wants
for us.
I meditated on Acts 17:28 throughout the following year after the day God
whetted my appetite with the possibilities wrapped up in those eight little
words. I came to realize that what He wants for us is to sense His
presence, experience His love, and delight in intimate relationship as we
live and move and have our being in sacred union with Him. And when we do,
He opens our eyes to His glory all around and the ache for something more
is soothed.

Let's Pray
God, what do you want for me today? Open my eyes to see and ears to hear.
Show me glimpses of Your presence as I live and move and have my being in
you. And help me not to miss it!
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well…
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth.

Proverbs 5:15-18

I once heard a grandfather who was talking about his grandson. He
said, "You know, my grandson has more temptations before school starts
at 8:30 in the morning than I had out Friday night looking for
trouble!" And you know, he's exactly right. In fact, one young lady
told her father recently, "When I see how casual sex is treated by my
classmates, there are times when I wonder, 'What am I waiting for?'"

So why should you maintain the purity and the standards of
righteousness that the Bible gives? The world today is full of so many
opportunities for men and women to go astray when it comes to sexual
purity. So why not just give in?

Well, here's your answer: because God wants what's best for you. I
can't tell you the heartbreak I've seen and the emotional damage I've
witnessed as a result of illicit sexual relationships. God doesn't
want you to experience that, so He's protected you by giving you
guidelines to obey.

God created His rules for sex with your joy in mind. Never forget
that. So whether your young and single or have been married for years,
follow God's perfect plan for sex and you'll experience His very best
for you and your spouse!

GOD'S PLAN FOR SEX WAS CREATED WITH YOUR JOY IN MIND. SO FOLLOW HIS
PLAN AND YOU'LL EXPERIENCE HIS VERY BEST FOR YOU!

Choose God's Will
by Charles R. Swindoll
Read Job 42:10--17

A major goal of wholesome, healthy Christians is the hope of reaching
maturity before death overtakes us. I will tell you without hesitation
that one of my major goals in life is to grow up as I grow older. A
commendable etching on a gravestone would be: "Here lies a man who
kept growing as he kept aging." Growing up and growing old need to
walk hand in hand. Never doubt it: maturing is a slow, arduous
process. Job accomplished it; he reached that goal. Small wonder we
read that he died an old man and full of days. He lived the rest of
his 140 years full of enthusiasm and passion. What an enviable way to
finish life.
When trouble comes we have two options. We can view it as an
intrusion, an outrage, or we can see it as an opportunity to respond
in specific obedience to God's will---that rugged virtue James calls
"endurance."
Endurance is not jaw-clenched resignation, nor is it passive
acquiescence. It's "a long obedience in the same direction." It's
staying on the path of obedience despite counter-indications. It's a
dogged determination to pursue holiness when the conditions of
holiness are not favorable. It's a choice in the midst of our
suffering to do what God has asked us to do, whatever it is, and for
as long as He asks us to do it. As Oswald Chambers wrote, "To choose
suffering makes no sense at all; to choose God's will in the midst of
our suffering makes all the sense in the world."
Where are you today? Where is your journey leading you? More
important, which option have you chosen? Are you viewing your trial as
an outrage or an opportunity? Try hard not to forget the lessons Job
teaches us about ourselves. It will make an enormous difference. As
you grow older, keep growing up. And, instead of simply reading about
the life of Job, begin living that kind of life.
That makes all the sense in the world, doesn't it?

Godliness

Matthew 9:11-13

There is a common misconception that believers should be perfect.
Pretending to have our lives in order, many of us wear happy faces and
speak words that sound acceptable. At times we're ashamed to admit our
shortcomings, as if they should not exist. Salvation through Jesus,
however, doesn't change the fact that sin is present in our life. When
we're born again, God forgives us and sees us as righteous. Yet our
battle with sin continues till we arrive in heaven.

In fact, striving for perfection actually can be a trap that pulls us
away from living a godly life. Functioning in this way is a form of
relying on our own capability. Jesus said that He came to heal the
spiritually sick because they recognized their weakness. With an
awareness of our inadequacy comes the realization of our need for Him.

The world sees successful individuals as powerful and self-sufficient,
but Jesus didn't care about these qualities. Instead, He wants people
to be aware of their own brokenness. This is the foundation for
godliness.

We should accept our neediness and seek God passionately. Doing so
allows the following attributes to develop: a hunger for God's Word,
faithful service, deepening trust, and decision-making based upon
principle rather than preference. Patiently and mercifully, God
matures us.

Be careful not to cover up your sins in order to look like a "good
Christian." Without recognition and confession of our sinfulness, we
are unable to rely fully on God. It is only with this awareness that
we can passionately seek Him, obey in His strength, and confess with
repentance when we miss the mark.

Coffee Break

"Which Perspective?"

"For we walk by faith, not by sight". 2 Corinthians 5:7

I had a dream that I was invited to speak at a Men's Conference. I
was so excited because I have never done that before. I love
encouraging men to be all that God has planned for them to be, plus it
would be good for the men to hear from a woman's perspective about
some things- esp. like how to treat women.

We tend to look at things from one perspective. Usually it is from
the perspective of our gender, race, age or culture. Because I am a
woman, I see things from a woman's perspective. It takes my husband
to show me that there are often two sides to the situation. I see the
situation from the emotional side. He sees it from a more practical
side.

By looking at things "one sided" we miss so much. We do this not only
on a physical level but on a spiritual one as well. We tend to look
at things from a natural perspective instead of a spiritual
perspective. We judge everything by what we can see, hear, feel,
taste or touch. We are motivated by what the natural evidence shows
us. Our behavior, attitude and actions are prompted by the physical
world around us. Our emotions are governed by those things that are
tangible.

As believers in Christ we can't look at everything on a natural
level. We must see them through the eyes of faith and from the
perspective of God's word. That's what is meant by "the just shall
live by faith". We don't live solely by what we see in the natural,
we don't live solely by what we hear from human voices. We live by
what we see in God's word and what we hear from the voice of the
Spirit. For example, when David went out to fight Goliath, King Saul
tried to put his armor on David so that he would be protected in
battle. The king was looking from a natural perspective-- you go to
war, you need weapons of protection. God's perspective was, "the
battle is the Lord's". God's perspective is what brought the giant
down and gave David the victory. Another example is the walls of
Jericho. From a natural perspective those walls couldn't come down
without some heavy artillery. God's perspective was "march around the
city and blow a horn". God's perspective brought those walls down.

There is a natural perspective and then there is God's perspective,
and for the believer God's perspective is the one we need to heed,
follow and allow to govern our lives.

Have a great day. Are you looking at things from one perspective
only- a natural perspective? Or are you living your life by looking
at things from God's perspective.

~AN UNDERSTANDING HEART~

"....But thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the Lord."
......Lev. 19: 18.
***********************
*This story is told of a little boy who hobbled into a pet store
and said, "I want to buy the puppy in the window."
"He has a crippled leg," said the owner of the store. The little boy
then pulled up his pants leg and said, "So have I, so I understand.
No one can love him like I can."

It's good to know that our Lord also understands all our weaknesses
and afflictions as we walk through this life. He also experienced the
bitterness of being betrayed, the scourge of suffering, and the
terror of the temptations of the tempter. In all these things, He
sinned not, but did the will of the Father. Like the little boy in the
story, Jesus says, "I understand." He tells us today that nobody
can love us more than He does.

Our Lord calls souls today and invites them to receive His
amazing grace and mercy. He understands and knows each
teardrop that falls. Every broken heart is known to the Lord.

Jesus will pick up all the broken pieces of a life and put them
back together again. Only the Lord can take broken vessels
and make them into something beautiful for His glory.

Only He can set a soul free and give them true joy and peace.
His blood still cleanses from sin today. His power is there
to help with every need one may have in their life.
Jesus is still calling souls to come unto Him and find rest.
What a compassionate and understanding Savior we serve!

Blessings In Christ,

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. --Psalm
46:1
In 1873, Horatio G. Spafford, a Christian lawyer from Chicago, sent his
wife and four daughters on an ocean liner bound for Le Havre, France. But
in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the steamship collided with another
sea vessel and sank within twelve minutes.
Miraculously, Spafford's wife was rescued and taken to Le Havre with the
other handful of survivors. When she arrived, she sent a message to her
husband in Chicag "Saved—alone."
Immediately, Stafford sailed for Europe to be with his grief-stricken wife.
As his ship passed the approximate location where his daughters drowned, he
penned these words in the midst of his sorrow: "When peace, like a river,
attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea-billows roll, whatever my lot, Thou
has taught me to say, 'It is well, it is well with my soul.'"
Scripture says our Lord is "the Father of compassion and the God of all
comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those
in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God" (2
Corinthians 1:3-4). If you are struggling through a difficult time in life,
you can find comfort in the arms of God. Or, if there is a person in your
life who is going through a tough time, seek to encourage them as the Lord
has encouraged you.

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Pray that the Lord would use the difficulties in your
life to help you encourage others who may be going through hard times.

* The God Of Peace*

*2 THESSALONIANS 3:16 NKJ
16 Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always in
every way. The Lord be with you all.*

*Several times the Bible refers to God as the God of peace. But
as English readers we miss the full meaning.*

*The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and the New Testament
of the Bible was written in Greek. All English Bibles are
translations.*

*The Greek word translated peace is eirene (i-ray'-nay), which
corresponds with the Hebrew word translated peace, shalom
(shaw-lome').*

*If you study extensively, both in the Hebrew and the Greek, you
will find that these words translated peace have a rich meaning
-- far more than just an absence of conflict.*

*The primary thought is one of wholeness -- lacking nothing.
When nothing is missing you have peace. There is no anxiety
because all is well.*

*This is the idea meant to be communicated by the term "God of
peace" or the "peace of God." It includes health and prosperity
as well as the normal English meaning of absence of conflict.*

*ROMANS 15:33 NKJ
33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.*

Then Jesus said to his disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about
your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life

They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds

thing, why do you worry about the rest?

*Daily Devotional
*Betty Miller shares her daily devotionals which are based on the book of
Proverbs in the Bible. * * * The Wisdom of God*

*Verses for the Day:*

*Proverbs 21:19-20 (KJV):
**19 It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and
an angry woman.
20 There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but
a foolish man spendeth it up.**
**
**Proverbs 21:19-20 (AMP):
**19 It is better to dwell in a desert land than with a contentious woman
and with vexation.
20 There are precious treasures and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a
self-confident and foolish man swallows it up and wastes it. *

*Thoughts for the Day:*

These scriptures in *Proverbs* warn us not to get into relationships with
the wrong people, and caution us not to be foolish and waste things. *Verse
19 *tells a man that he would be better off living out in a wilderness and
a desert, than to live with a contentious and angry woman. Usually, in a
wilderness or desert, there are not many people dwelling there; so, in
essence, this means there are a lot worse things than living alone, and one
of them is living with the wrong person. Since King Solomon wrote these *
Proverbs*, he usually wrote from a man's perspective; therefore, he is
warning men not to marry a woman that is angry and does not have any
character. Of course, the opposite would be true also, a woman should not
marry an angry man without character either.

In *verse 20 *we are told that those who are wise, will store up precious
treasure in their houses and shall have plenty of supplies. Having
"precious treasure" in a home is more than just owning material things; it
also means that a home where a wise man lives will be a home of peace and
joy, as well. This is because the man of the house will do what it takes to
create a Christian environment for his family. He will consider his family
a precious treasure and he will take care of them.

When oil is spoken of in scripture, it usually is referring to olive oil.
Having "oil" in the house, tells us that they had the necessities needed to
make the home comfortable. In Bible days, olive oil was very valuable. In
fact, it was at one time used as a medium of exchange, and was the evidence
of prosperity. In households, it was used in lamps for light, as an
ointment in cosmetics and medicinal compounds, and oil was also used for
cooking purposes. In the temple, it was used for sacrificial offerings and
the priests also used it for anointing purposes.

Throughout the book of *Proverbs*, we find that there are many contrasts
between wise behavior and foolish behavior. In this verse, we find that the
wise man is prosperous, while the foolish man lustful and wasteful. A
foolish man is self-indulgent, so he is a consumer, and does not think of
saving. So many in our society today have no savings, as their wants cause
them to indulge in the things they desire right now, with no restraints.
The Bible calls this lasciviousness. It is an evil that comes out of men's
hearts. When we come to the Lord Jesus, He will deliver us from these
things, if we ask Him to do so.

*Mark 7:21-23:
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts,
adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye,
blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.*

The self confident fool is also a waster. Waste is an evil also, and it
especially can be found in an affluent society. Since they have so much,
they think nothing of throwing perfectly good things away. Another reason
for waste is they feel it is too much trouble to fix something or gather up
small pieces for other uses. They never think of how someone else might use
those things. Even old clothing that cannot be worn any longer, can be
torn up and used for cleaning rags, if a person is resourceful. Jesus,
Himself, practiced frugality and thrift. We see this with the feeding of
the multitudes. Once he had fed them by multiplying the food, He ordered
His disciples to gather up the remains.

*Matthew 14:15-21:
15 And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a
desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they
may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
16 But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
17 And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
18 He said, Bring them hither to me.
19 And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the
five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and
brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the
multitude.
20 And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments
that remained twelve baskets full.
21 And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and
children.*
*
*From our study today, we can see that a wise man will have plenty, while a
foolish man who wastes, will have nothing.

*Prayer for the Day:*

*Dear Father in Heaven, I am grateful that You gave me a good husband who
is gentle and kind. I am blessed. Lord, I pray for any of my brothers and
sisters in Christ who are going through marital problems at this time.
God, give them Your love and grace to overcome the relationship problems
they may be having. May they discover the secret to a happy marriage is
laying down one's life for the other, praying for the other, preferring the
other, and honoring and loving them. Lord, we cannot change people, but You
can. May each of us ask for the changes needed in our own lives and in
doing that, we shall trust You to give us the love, patience and grace to
deal with any problems in our relationships. Give us Your wisdom, and help
us also to overcome any waste in our lives. I ask this in Jesus' name.
Amen.*

VERSE:
And a voice came from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I love; with
you I am well pleased."
-- Mark 1:11

THOUGHT:
Shortly after Jesus' baptism, he went to face Satan in a
grueling 40 days of temptation. Remember what Satan's opening words
were? "If you are the Son of God..." Wasn't it great that God had
already reassured him of his relationship before it was questioned?
What do those you love need to hear from you today? You don't know
when their time of trial will come; you just know it will, so go
ahead and reassure them before it's necessary!

PRAYER:
Almighty and loving Father, please help me to say the right
words of love and affection to those whom I love so that when
temptation comes, or when others try to draw them away from me,
they will not doubt my love for them. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.

Learning to Worship
Day 217

You were created to worship God. Worship means to honor or reverence;
to regard with great or extravagant respect or devotion
(Merriam-Webster). Do these words describe your response to God?

Dr. Ray Pritchard says, "I would define worship in the broadest sense
as the soul's response to God. It is anything that I do in my soul
where I am truly aware of my heavenly Father, and I am turning to Him
in the time of need. It might be with joy. It might be with praise.
But very often it's with a broken heart.

"I think that in those moments when you have lost someone very
precious to you, God is honored when deep inside you turn to Him and
cry out, 'Oh God, oh Lord, You are awesome. Your ways are beyond
finding out. Lord, I do not understand, but I bow before You because
You are an awesome God.' That to me is worship."

Hezekiah was a king who trusted God with wholehearted devotion both in
good times and in bad. The Bible records that "there was no one like
him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him" (2
Kings 18:5). Even in the midst of bitter tears, Hezekiah approached
God with a reverent, worshipful heart, and God heard his prayer:
"'Remember, O Lord, how I have walked before you faithfully and with
wholehearted devotion and have done what is good in your eyes.' And
Hezekiah wept bitterly" (2 Kings 20:3).

O Lord God, my heart cries out to You. I worship You with reverence.
You are Lord of all. Amen.

Learning to Trust Again
Micca Monda Campbell

"Then Jesus said, 'Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would
see the glory of God?'" John 11:40 (NIV)

After my husband died, I felt unloved and forgotten by God. I'd
trusted Him and believed as His child nothing bad would happen to me.
Yet when something tragic did happen, I bought the lie. "I knew it,
God. I knew You really didn't love me!" He had promised never to leave
or desert me, but there I was, alone. How could God betray me? I
wondered.

Mary, Martha, and their brother Lazarus, were in Jesus' inner circle
of friends. As part of the "in" crowd, Mary and Martha felt certain
Jesus would come to them when Lazarus got ill. They had seen Jesus
heal and minister to complete strangers. Surely, He'd rush to those
whom He loved. However, we see in John 11:4-6 that was not the case.

Jesus indeed loved Mary, Martha and Lazarus. Yet, even after He heard
Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was two more days.

Let's pause here for a moment. It can be confusing. If Jesus loved His
friends why did He wait to go to their side? These verses appear to
validate a fear of rejection. "If Jesus ignored His friend Lazarus,
then He can ignore me too."

Do you know that hollow, helpless feeling that accompanies the pain of
rejection, loss and loneliness? It may be the loss of your home or of
a pregnancy, too many weekends spent alone, or perhaps a loved one
rejected you. That pain warns that trusting again is too risky.

The truth is, when we experience emotional or physical trauma, and God
doesn't respond like we think He should, we have two choices. Either
turn to God, trusting Him with the result; or run from God and feed on
bitterness. It is possible for us to take the second choice out all
together. We can learn to trust again.

Perspective is often limited by circumstances. God knows exactly what
He's doing and it's always based on love. As a young widow, when I was
overcome with fear, I wasn't really looking for answers. I needed the
assurance that God was near, in control, and that He cared about my
circumstances and me.

While others may reject us, you and I need not fear rejection from
God. In the weeks and months after my husband's death, I began to
understand God had not left me, but was in the pit with me. I started
to see a deeper truth. Bad things are going to happen to me while on
earth.

Sickness, abuse and death are part of life in a fallen world that God
will someday restore. Until then, God may allow me to go through these
things. It's not to cause me any undue pain, but rather He allows them
and then uses them to accomplish spiritual growth. Charles Stanley
explains, "Some things are so important to God that they are worth
interrupting the happiness and health of His children in order to
accomplish them."

This was true with Mary and Martha. Jesus told Martha that she would
see the glory of God if she believed. If you and I choose faith over
fear, we will see the glory of God turn our pain into life and
blessings. Over the years, as I've turned to the Lord and away from my
fears, I've seen His glory in the gifts of my new husband and three
children.

As Mary and Martha believed, they witnessed the glory of God when He
raised their brother from the dead. Their fears vanished and their
faith was restored. If you and I want to exchange our fear for faith,
we must believe that what Christ has in store for us is worth our
present pain.

Dear Lord, even when I don't understand Your actions, help me trust
that You have my best at heart. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:
Jesus told them to remove the stone covering Lazarus' grave. The stone
can represent our hurt, anger or pride. In order to see your miracle,
you may need to remove the stone that has hardened your heart against
trusting Christ.

Reflections:
Can looking at my circumstances from God's perspective lessen my anxieties?

Will I chose to trust God (again) today? Why or why not?

Power Verses:
Isaiah 54:10, "'Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be
removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my
covenant of peace be removed,' says the Lord, who has compassion on
you." (NIV)

This Day's Thought

Life is a glorious opportunity, if it is used to condition us for
eternity. If we fail in this, though we succeed in everything else,
our life will have been a failure. There is no escape for the man who
squanders his opportunity to prepare to meet God.

Billy Graham

"God's Word to You"!

God's Word to You today is found in Colossians 3:12-17

12 Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate
hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, 13 bearing with one
another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other;
as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. 14 And above all
these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. 15
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were
called in one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you
richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms
and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17
And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Losing someone is hard. When it is a loved one it is even harder. Our
lives are changed from the absence. Our senses are heightened and dulled
all at once.

Our hearts break and yearn for one more word, one more hug one more
chance.

Even when we are saved and have all the faith in the world it hurts. Even
when we know in our hearts we will have another chance upon chance upon
chance for all eternity, it still hurts now.

And that's ok. God made us that way for a reason. He made us in His
image. He made us to love as He loves and have compassion as He has
compassion.

He hurts when we don't choose Him and deny His gift and sacrifice.

He understands.

And He cares. All He wants is for us to really care to.

me n' God love ya

Our emotions are governed by those things that are
tangible.

As believers in Christ we can't look at everything on a natural level.
We must see them through the eyes of faith and from the perspective
of God's word. That's what is meant by "the just shall live by
faith". We don't live solely by what we see in the natural, we don't
live solely by what we hear from human voices. We live by what we see
in God's word and what we hear from the voice of the Spirit. For
example, when David went out to fight Goliath, King Saul tried to put
his armor on David so that he would be protected in battle. The king
was looking from a natural perspective-- you go to war, you need
weapons of protection. God's perspective was, "the battle is the
Lord's". God's perspective is what brought the giant down and gave
David the victory. Another example is the walls of Jericho. From a
natural perspective those walls couldn't come down without some heavy
artillery. God's perspective was "march around the city and blow a
horn".

*Gleanings from the Word
*Experience an extraordinary God in ordinary life

Issue #3716 - Winter Chill?
It has been unseasonably mild so far this year. Normally by now we have
been locked in the deep freeze (-20 to -40) for weeks on end, but other
than the odd day which has been barely below freezing, it has typically
been at or above the freezing mark most of the winter. We have had a number
of days that hit the +10C mark (50F). For Alberta in the winter that is
phenomenal.
It looks as if we are going to drop into the freezer tonight, then back out
for a couple of days and in once again towards the weekend. We have
actually had temperatures warmer than places like Florida and Arizona so
far this month. It is downright weird ... in a nice way.
I am not operating under any delusions. There is still plenty of time for
it to get cold and stay cold for weeks on end. However every day that it
has not been cold has been a bonus. To top it off, the days are getting
longer again and that always makes winter seem that much more bearable.
There is not enough snow on the ground to cover it. We had a light skiff
last night, but it wasn't even enough to require sweeping the sidewalks.
The warm weather and lack of cold has many people worried. What are the
farmers going to do come spring? What if there is a sustained drought? That
is of course always a possibility, but then so is the possibility of an
early wet spring which would then leave them wondering when the fields
would be dry enough to seed.
People seem to have a need to panic and complain. I heard the radio on
yesterday and people were already complaining that it was going to get cold
tonight. Get a grip folks; we have had a spectacular winter so far, one of
the mildest on record. So it gets cold again, that does not negate the
blessing we have had so far. It would be normal.
We do not seem to know how blessed we are in every way. Even when times are
hard we are better off on this continent than most of the world has ever
been. Even if the weather had been unseasonably cold, we would still have
been blessed in many ways.
Every blessing, no matter how small it seems, is from God.
James 1:16-17 (ESV)
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect
gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there
is no variation or shadow due to change.
There is an old hymn by Johnson Oatman which goes...
When upon life's billows you are tempest tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Refrain
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
Refrain
When you look at others with their lands and gold,
Think that Christ has promised you His wealth untold;
Count your many blessings. Wealth can never buy
Your reward in heaven, nor your home on high.
Refrain
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be disheartened, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey's end.
Refrain
Wise and godly counsel.
Remember that every blessing is from God, be sure to give Him the glory.
Be blessed
Kevin
