Following God's plan for sex
January 11, 2012
Drink water from your own cistern,
flowing water from your own well…
Let your fountain be blessed,
and rejoice in the wife of your youth.
Proverbs 5:15-18
I once heard a grandfather who was talking about his grandson. He
said, "You know, my grandson has more temptations before school starts
at 8:30 in the morning than I had out Friday night looking for
trouble!" And you know, he's exactly right. In fact, one young lady
told her father recently, "When I see how casual sex is treated by my
classmates, there are times when I wonder, 'What am I waiting for?'"
So why should you maintain the purity and the standards of
righteousness that the Bible gives? The world today is full of so many
opportunities for men and women to go astray when it comes to sexual
purity. So why not just give in?
Well, here's your answer: because God wants what's best for you. I
can't tell you the heartbreak I've seen and the emotional damage I've
witnessed as a result of illicit sexual relationships. God doesn't
want you to experience that, so He's protected you by giving you
guidelines to obey.
God created His rules for sex with your joy in mind. Never forget
that. So whether your young and single or have been married for years,
follow God's perfect plan for sex and you'll experience His very best
for you and your spouse!
GOD'S PLAN FOR SEX WAS CREATED WITH YOUR JOY IN MIND. SO FOLLOW HIS
PLAN AND YOU'LL EXPERIENCE HIS VERY BEST FOR YOU!
As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon
January 11
Faith Sets the Bow
And it shall come to pass, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that
the beau shall be seen in the cloud. (Genesis 9:14)
Just now clouds are plentiful enough, but we are not afraid that the
world will be destroyed by a deluge. We see the rainbow often enough
to pre-vent our having any such fears. The covenant which the Lord
made with Noah stands fast, and we have no doubts about it. Why, then,
should we think that the clouds of' trouble, which now darken our sky,
will end in our destruction? Let us dismiss such groundless and
dishonoring fears.
Faith always sees the bow of covenant promise whenever sense sees the
cloud of affliction. God has a bow with which He might shoot out His
arrows of destruction. But see, it is turned upward! It is a bow
without an arrow or a string; it is a bow hung out for show, no longer
used for war. It is a bow of many colors, expressing joy and delight,
and not a bow blood-red with slaughter or black with anger. Let us be
of good courage. Never does God so darken our sky as to leave His
covenant without a witness, and even if He did, we would trust Him
since He cannot change or lie or in any other way fail to keep His
covenant of peace. Until the waters go over the earth again, we shall
have no reason for doubting our God.
As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART
January 11, 2012
Pastor Cecil A. Thompson
CLINGING!
John 15:5-7
I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in
him, he will bear much fruit;apart from Me you can do nothing. If
anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch that is thrown away
and withers; such branches are picked up, and thrown into the fire and
burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you, ask whatever
you wish, and it will be given you.
Several years ago I read a brief biographical sketch about the 18th
President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant, who was the
President at the close of the Civil War and a very interesting man.
Let me give you just a few glimpses into what he was like. He
graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point. His roommate was
Fred Dent. Once when he was interviewed about what kind of man the
President was, Fred Dent replied, "In all the time we roomed together,
I never knew Ulysses to use a single vulgar or profane word." Wow!
Fred spoke highly of Ulysses to his sister, Julia, and finally
introduced them in 1844. Ulysses fell in love with Julia and began to
court her. It is told that his proposal was somewhat unusual. They
were crossing a stream and he told Julia to cling to him and he would
see that they made it safely across. When they reached the other side,
he told Julia that if she would cling to him the rest of their life,
he would like for her to become his wife. SHE CLUNG! We are told that
they were one of the most loving couples ever to occupy the White
House. They insisted on being together on every occasion. They held
hands and always enjoyed their times together. Their children reported
that there was never any animosity between them.
Well, so much for today's history lesson. But it is not merely history
but an example of how we can make a spiritual application. I believe
we should always be looking for spiritual applications in the things
we see or hear. The Lord wants us to cling closely to Him. Wouldn't it
be wonderful if people view us as walking so close to God that it was
as though we were holding hands? I do not desire for that to sound
sacrilegious or flippant, but a word picture, no more than simply a
word picture. An example of our love for the One who died in order
that we might be as little children walking hand in hand with our
Lord, in confidence, trust, and total dependence.
Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely
and be a blessing!

Psalm 5:3
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I
direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.
The sun had just begun to climb into the sky, and the dew shone
brightly on the field below. Though not ordinarily a morning person,
Ann always loved those special times when she rose in time to see the
sunrise. On mornings like this, who could doubt that there is a God?
Ann's heart filled with a joy beyond words, and nothing could remove
that joy during the day. Taking a Bible, she went to a clearing to sit
and to read and to pray.
God gives us special times in order that we might find joy and that we
might find Him. He has created a glorious world, and He has freely
given it to us. The early quiet of the day is a beautiful time to
encounter the Lord. Give Him your early hours, and He will give you
all the blessings you can hold.
Prayer: I raise my voice to You in the morning, Lord. Help me to
appreciate Your new day, and use it to the fullest. Open my eyes to
the splendor of all Your creation. Amen.

He Parted the Heavens
"I call to the Lord, who is worthy of praise...in my distress I called
to the Lord, I cried to my God for help...He parted the heavens and
came down;...He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew
me out of the deep waters." Psalm 18:3,6,9,16
What an amazing Psalm this is! Do you see the proactive role that God
will take in our lives when we call to him for help? He will part the
heavens for us and he will pull us up out of our despair. He not only
listens to our cries, He does something about them. It is when we come
to the end of ourselves, when we finally are willing to give up
control of our problem, when we realize we are helpless and all is
hopeless, it is then that we usually cry to God for help. Why is that?
Why do we wait? Why do we struggle on trying to do it ourselves, when
there is a faithful Father who is waiting for us to call to Him for
help. I guess that is our fallen human nature – the old, "I can do it
myself" attitude that we need to learn to give up. So next time you
find yourself in the midst of a problem and before you find yourself
at the end of your rope, remember Psalm 18. Remember in your despair
there is a God that cares, a God who will part the heavens and come
down to earth to lift you up from your despair. He is faithful and
worthy of our praise!
Father, thank You for hearing our calls for help. Thank You for
reaching down from heaven to lift us up and take control of our lives.
Help us to let go of our desire to control and to give You control of
our lives that we might have the desires of our heart. Amen

What Are You Worried About?I was young, and now I am old, but I have
never seen good people left helpless or their children begging for
food. Psalm 37:25
What are you worried about?
We worry about the IRS, the SAT, and the TSA!
We worry that we won't have enough money. And when we have enough
money, we worry that we won't manage it well.
We worry that the world will end before the parking meter expires. We
worry what the dog thinks if he sees us step out of the shower. We
worry that someday we'll learn that fat-free yogurt was fattening!
Honestly now. Did God save you so you would fret? Would he teach you
to walk just to watch you fall?
Would he be nailed to the cross for your sins and then disregard your
prayers? Come on!
Is scripture teasing us when it reads, "He has put his angels in
charge of you to watch over you wherever you go?" (Psalm 91:11)
I don't think so either!

Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your
hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
When I get hungry, I get nervous and anxious. I find that I snap at
people and have a very short temper. This is an indication that food
is more than just a pleasure; it is an addiction. To kick an addiction
requires restraint and peace. Jesus Christ promises blessed peace and
rest to all who come to Him. It is important for us to rely on the
gentle comfort of God when we face the trials of dieting. God knows
what we are going through, and He rejoices when we turn to Him for
peace of mind and heart. It is not vital that we understand how this
peace can come to us. What is important is that we truly believe God
will grant it.
Today's thought: In God, there is peace that is greater than the
turmoil caused by our dieting!

I really like football. I just don't have much time to watch it. But
this past weekend, I watched a whole game! And it wasn't even my team!
I watched the Denver Broncos win an astonishing victory over the
heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers in a wild-card playoff game. But I
was watching more than a football game.

The "Man With the Red Bandana" - #6523
Wednesday, January 11, 2012
In the old Westerns, they said the hero was the guy in the white hat.
In the life-or-death moments of September 11, 2001, it was the man
with the red bandana.
A red bandana had been Welles Crowther's trademark, I guess, since he
was a boy. He still carried one even when he was a 24-year-old
equities trader in the South Tower of the World Trade Center. And he
had it on that fateful September day when the tower was in flames.
Ling Young will never forget the man she called "the man with the red
bandana." She was sitting, bloody and dazed, waiting with others for
help in the Elevator Sky Lobby. It was on the 78th floor that the
second hijacked plane had sliced through the tower, and that's where
she was. She said, "All of a sudden I heard a gentleman come out of
the corner saying, 'I found the stairs. Follow me.'" The man was
carrying a woman on his back, and he had a red bandana in his hand.
After leading the group to a stairwell and giving them a fire
extinguisher, he disappeared back up the stairs to help some other
people.
That was the last time she saw him, and she said, "He's been on my
mind every day."
I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The
Man With the Red Bandana."
Judy Wein was in that same Sky Lobby, badly injured, and that's when
she saw a man with a red bandana over his nose and mouth come running
across the room, and he led them to the unseen staircase that would
take them to safety. And in her words, "He was the cowboy coming in to
save the town...he basically gave his life." Ling Young is sure that
"Without him, I would not be here. He definitely saved my life." Six
months after the towers fell, they found his body in the rubble.
I can't read this story without remembering the Man who gave His life
to save mine, and to save so many others. On the fateful day when He
died to rescue me, it was not a red bandana He wore. It was a crown of
thorns, jammed into His head. He bled red for me. And the way I'll
know Him when I see Him is by those awful nail prints in His hands.
The scars that will forever declare how much my sin cost and how
deeply He loves me and you. Our word for today from the Word of God,
Isaiah 49:15-16. He tells me, "I will not forget you! See, I have
engraved you on the palms of My hands."
See, I'm not alone in my desperate need for a spiritual rescuer. We
all sit in the darkness, the danger of being away from God. We're all
away from Him. We're on the edge of being swept into an awful eternity
after our last heartbeat, because we've run our own lives. We've
hijacked our life from God. We've said, "God, I'll do it my way
instead of Your way." And the only way to pay for that is to pay that
penalty for an eternity in hell. But here comes Jesus with His hand
extended saying, "I have made a way out. Come on, follow Me!"
Our eternal destiny depends on whether or not we do follow Him to the
way out. He said, "Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but
whoever rejects the Son will not see life" (John 3:36). That's the
crossroads we all come to; it is the crossroads to which God may have
brought you today, "What will you do with Jesus, My Son, who gave His
life for you?" The crown of thorns, the nails in His hands and feet,
the spear in His side, the separation from God the Father Himself, all
for you because of your sin and because of His love for you.
Today, as He reaches out His hand your direction, are you going to
grab it or are you going to walk away? This could be the day you
settle your eternity and trade in that hell for His heaven. Reach out
and grab Him. Say, "Jesus, I'm pinning all my hopes on You as my
Rescuer." Go to our website and we can help you there find your way
into a personal relationship with Jesus - YoursForLife.net.
Welles Crowther's father said, "His last hour was his legacy." Well,
Jesus' last hour, when He was on that cross and chose to be cut off
from God so we would never have to be, that was His legacy.
And with a very full heart, I can tell you, I'm part of that legacy,
and you can be too.

My Manna
"But put on the Lord Jesus Christ." Romans 13:14.
Every sin can be overcome!
Don't allow yourself to admit to any exception - - for if you do, this
exception will be the loose bolt that causes the bridge to fall down.
One of the sad things about certain sections of the modern-day church
is the moral fatalism that says in regard to one's sin:
"But what could I do? I am just a frail human being."
The implication is that sin is an integral part of human nature.
And as long as we remain human, we shall never be able to overcome
sin.
The clear message of the gospel is spelled out in this verse:
"Sin will not rule over you." Romans 6:14.
Today's text in The Amplified Bible reads:
"But clothe yourself with the Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and make
no provision for indulging the flesh - put a stop to thinking about
the evil cravings of your physical nature - to gratify its desires and
lusts."
Notice the phrase:
- "make no provision for indulging the flesh."
In other words, do not provide for failure; provide for victory.
There must be an absoluteness about the whole thing.
There are dangers in pretending we are winning the battle against sin
when we are not, or in approaching the whole issue from self-effort.
But these dangers, in my opinion, are not as great as mentally
providing for sin in our lives.
The tyranny of this fatalism - that as long as we are in the flesh, we
must expect to sin - must be broken.
The Christian life must be lived from the standpoint that we expect
not to sin.
I repeat:
Every sin can be overcome!
You may like to pray:
"My Father and my God, help me lay hold on the fact that Your offer is
not simply to help me realize what sin is, but to release me from it.
May I enter more and more into that glorious deliverance day by day;
In Jesus' Name, Amen."

**Scripture*
*Then the Lord said to Noah, "Enter the ark, you and all your household,
for I have seen that you alone are righteous before Me in this generation."
Genesis 7:1, HCSB*
*Thought*
God accomplishes His goals through people whose obedience have prepared
them to do the work God is ready to do. Noah stood out above all the crowd
for God to see. Do you look so much like the crowd that God must turn
elsewhere to do His work?
*
Prayer*
Righteous God, I want to obey You and be prepared to do Your work. Speak to
my heart today. I will step out of the crowd to join You in Your work of
redemption. Amen.

(Click

Something happens to the human system psychologically, spiritually and even
physiologically when forced to do something contrary to the will of God's
Holy Spirit that dwells within each person. Perhaps that is the definition
of *dehumanization*; there occurs a negative affect on both victim and
perpetrator as an offense is committed. If you go against God's will, it
becomes impossible for God to bless you. God will never abandon you, nor
will God refuse to forgive you, but it is illogical to believe that God
will bless wrongdoing.
St. Irenaeus said it well: *"The Glory of God is man fully
alive."*Permission to take care of your body is good news. Your health
is not only
something you give yourself; it is also a gift to your neighbor. So put on
some tunes, ear buds or simply enjoy the music permanently etched in your
brain; enjoy whatever motion you can garner. Trust that in your bliss, the
Holy Spirit does not take a hike.
*Keep us from the harm of our reckless desires that we might be united in
the one Spirit we share through Jesus Christ, our light and our life. Amen.

*1 Corinthians 6:12-20* (NRSV)
12 "All things are lawful for me", but not all things are beneficial. "All
things are lawful for me", but I will not be dominated by anything.
13 "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food", and God will
destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but
for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.
14 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power.
15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I
therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute?
Never!
16 Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body
with her? For it is said, "The two shall be one flesh."
17 But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.
18 Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body;
but the fornicator sins against the body itself.
19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within
you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own?
20 For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

*Gamaliel*
*Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of
the law held in respect by all the people... Acts 5:34 (NKJV) *
*
It was a pivotal turning point in the early Church. The apostles had just
begun to proclaim the good news about Jesus and had started to cause quite
a stir in the city of Jerusalem. This new movement of Jesus followers was
becoming a force the Jewish authorities had to reckon with as it threatened
their religious grip over the people. So they used their political power to
arrest the apostles and commanded them to stop talking about Jesus.
Of course, the apostles refused to obey, forcing the Jewish rulers into a
difficult decision. They would either have to release them and run the risk
of their message spreading, or they would have to kill them. Again, this
was a critical moment in the Church's existence, and an unlikely character
emerged to play an important role.
One of the most respected Jewish leaders, a man named Gamaliel, stepped
forward and spoke his mind on the matter. Basically, he advised the other
rulers to step back and let the apostles run their course. His logic was
simple yet very profound: If their movement was based on human effort, it
would come to nothing in the end. But if it was a genuine work of God, then
it would prevail despite their efforts to stamp it out (Acts 5:35-39).
Gamaliel was so revered by the Jews that they consented to his counsel. The
apostles were released, and the gospel continued to spread like wildfire
throughout Jerusalem, the surrounding region, and even to the ends of the
known world. Although Gamaliel wasn't a Christian, God still used him to
advance the mission of His Church.
Sometimes God will use the unexpected in order to accomplish His agenda. In
our own lives, this can come in the form of a unbelieving family member,
neighbor, or co-worker that He might use to help steer us in the right
direction. Divine intervention can come through unlikely channels, so be
alert and discerning in all of your interactions.
Think About It…
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?

*Mission First*
*Acts 6:1, NIV: "In those days when the number of disciples was increasing,
the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because
their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food."*
*The church was young, and its members uncertain. They had not been a
Christian church before and they did not have an example to follow. How to
be a church was a matter being worked out by God's grace, through the
Spirit's leadership, in the likeness of Christ, and having love one for
another. And so they struggled to grow, and to learn, and to become what
God intended His church to be. Within the process there arose on occasion
disagreement, and sometimes disunity. But the church and its mission being
of far greater importance than the wants of the individual is something
that had to be held in higher esteem. People had to put aside hurt feelings
and personal expectations. They had to work for, and sometimes fight for,
the greater good; not through dictating the 'right' way to do church, but
by learning to love the way Christ loves us. It takes a great deal of
grace, understanding, love, and patience to be a part of the diverse
gathering of people called 'the church.' It takes a unified heart within in
the church to accomplish its purpose. And it takes individuals willing to
sacrifice personal expectations to ensure the church exhibits love for
Christ, and His love for others.*

Neglect Not the Gift
"Neglect not the gift that is in thee.... Give thyself wholly to
them." 1 Timothy 4:14-15 God has given to every believer a gift or
gifts that they are responsible for using to His glory through the
ministry of the Holy Spirit. The purposes of these gifts are many.
Paul mentions three in particular: for the perfecting of the saints,
for the work of the ministry, and for the edifying of the body of
Christ.
Paul challenges every believer, "Be steadfast, unmovable, abounding
always in the work of the Lord, for as much as ye know that your labor
is not in vain in the Lord."
It is important to understand the Source of our gifts. All gifts
proceed from and are empowered by the One and Self-Same Spirit, the
third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. From the very beginning,
and throughout our spiritual journey, it is He who works all in all!
We are not to be proud nor boastful of whatever gift we possess. It
has been given to us by the Holy Spirit, and will only be effective
and fruitful when He is the One who empowers our gift(s) to be used
for God's glory.
I often have stood admiring a magnificent building ascending high into
the skyline, and have wondered at the countless features that are
designed to make it functional and safe. You wonder why this tall
structure doesn't fall over when the storms beat against it. Then I am
reminded that it was built one step at a time. Before the
superstructure was erected, a very deep hole was dug, prepared, and
secured, that formed the foundation upon which everything was to rest.
A foreman told me of all the planning, preparation, and content that
went into the foundation. I was amazed! Tremendous iron girders, a
massive amount of concrete, and reinforcement of all kinds were all
specifically placed to make certain the foundation would be absolutely
safe and would secure the building.
Then I thought of the SURE FOUNDATION we have in Christ, and the gifts
that He has given to us. How are these gifts manifested? Do they
proceed from a shallow experience we may have had? Do they emerge from
a life not enriched with grace, creating pride in some and envy in
others? Does our gift contain the insidious seed of selfish interests
that result in self-satisfaction?
Oh, to have our gift anchored in and secured by the ROCK OF AGES,
deeply planted within the hallowed grace of God and undergirded with
His love. Then, wherever God places us, in whatever circumstances we
find ourselves, the gift from Him will be manifested in meekness and
modesty, in forbearance and forgiveness, coming from a heart committed
to God. It will be manifested by His love that will supersede all of
our actions, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Oh, that we might recognize the gift God has given us, not neglecting
it through complacency or unconcern. We have a responsibility before
God and will be held accountable to use our gift in the surroundings
where God has placed us and to those that God brings into our path. Is
your gift being used for His glory?
The fruitfulness of our life and the effectiveness of the gift (or
gifts) that God has given us will not be measured by the grandeur of
the superstructure but by the depth that our lives are embedded in the
sure foundation of Christ.

Written in Heaven
by Jason Mitchener
Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto
you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.
Luke 10:20
At one point in His ministry, Jesus sent out seventy people to various
cites that He would later visit. Jesus instructed these seventy to
declare that the kingdom of heaven is at hand and to heal the sick.
When the seventy returned, they excitedly told Jesus, Lord, even the
devils are subject unto us through thy name.
I can picture them waiting for Jesus to applaud their powerful
ministry. I'm sure they thought Jesus would say something like, You
did wonderfully. The devils run when they see you powerful
devil-stompers coming!
That's not how Jesus responded though. He said, Notwithstanding in
this rejoice not,
that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because
your names are
written in heaven.
God doesn't want us to be puffed up with pride because we may have a
powerful ministry. The pastor of the megachurch with five thousand
members and a worldwide satellite broadcast is no greater than the
pastor of a country church with fifteen members.
At the same time, the megachurch pastor is no less than the country
church pastor.
We seem to think we can impress God with the size or power of our
ministry. God,
look at all I've accomplished in Your name. My witnessing efforts
brought ten people to You just in the last thirty minutes. And
remember that woman with seven demons?
Well, they ran when when they saw me coming. Now the woman is the
church secretary.
Aren't you proud of me, God?
Are we waiting for God to tell us we have earned the heavenly
equivalent of a gold star?
Although powerful ministry is wonderful, we shouldn't get our greatest
joy from that.
Our greatest joy should be the awesome truth that God sent His Son to
die on the
cross for us.
Our greatest joy should be knowing that because we repented from our
sins and believed in the good news of Christ's sacrifice for us, we
now have the blessed assurance that we have eternal life.
Our names are written in heaven.
Let us rejoice in the things that really matter!
"The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon
you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give
you peace." Numbers 6:24-26

Job 3:9-12
"May the stars of its morning be dark; may it look for light, but have
none, and not see the dawning of the day; because it did not shut up
the doors of my mother's womb, nor hide sorrow from my eyes. Why did I
not die at birth? Why did I not perish when I came from the womb? Why
did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should nurse?"
In the Depths of Discouragement
Some time ago the Hayden Planetarium in New York City issued an
invitation to all those interested in applying to join the crew on the
first journey to another planet. Eighteen thousand people applied.
They gave the applications to a panel of psychologists, who examined
them thoroughly and came to this conclusion--in the vast majority of
cases, those who applied did so because they were discouraged with
their lives here and hoped they could find a new life somewhere else.
Job was mired even deeper in discouragement. He wasn't simply seeking
a new life; he wished he had never been born. After losing his wealth,
his health and his family, Job felt it would have been better had he
never seen the light of his first day. Before we move too quickly to
criticize Job, most of us have to admit we've never experienced in a
matter of minutes the kind of devastating blows that this man did. Job
went from the highest heights to the lowest depths with hardly time to
take a breath.
Christians are not immune to disasters and the discouragement that
sometimes accompanies them. But as Job was to discover later, we do
have an answer--God. The Lord Jesus told His disciples, "Let not your
heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me" (John
14:1). When your heart is filled with discouragement, Jesus can fill
it with His peace.
If you are discouraged today, running away and starting a new life is
not the answer. Instead, completely place your situation in Christ's
hands. Turn over every troubling thought to His care. And let the
peace of God, which surpasses understanding, give you new hope.
Let the God of peace fill you with the peace of God.

NO room for a discouraged or depressed feeling is left you. If your
sphere is outwardly humble, if it even appears to be quite
insignificant, God understands it better than you do, and it is a part
of His wisdom to bring out great sentiments in humble conditions,
great principles in works that are outwardly trivial, great characters
under great adversities and heavy loads of encumbrance. Let it fill
you with cheerfulness and exalted feeling, however deep in obscurity
your lot may be, that God is leading you on, girding you for a work,
preparing you for a good that is worthy of His divine magnificence. If
God is really preparing us all to become that which is the very
highest and best thing possible, there ought never to be a discouraged
or uncheerful being in the world.

Shut Doors
"They were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the Word in Asia" (Acts 16:6).
It is interesting to study the methods of His guidance as it was
extended towards these early heralds of the Cross. It consisted
largely in prohibitions, when they attempted to take another course
than the right. When they would turn to the left, to Asia, He stayed
them. When they sought to turn to the right, to Bithynia, again He
stayed them. In after years Paul would do some of the greatest work of
his life in that very region; but just now the door was closed against
him by the Holy Spirit. The time was not yet ripe for the attack on
these apparently impregnable bastions of the kingdom of Satan. Apollos
must come there for pioneer work. Paul and Barnabas are needed yet
more urgently elsewhere, and must receive further training before
undertaking this responsible task.
Beloved, whenever you are doubtful as to your course, submit your
judgment absolutely to the Spirit of God, and ask Him to shut against
you every door but the right one. Say,
"Blessed Spirit, I cast on Thee the entire responsibility of closing
against my steps any and every course which is not of God. Let me hear
Thy voice behind me whenever I turn to the right hand or the left."
In the meanwhile, continue along the path which you have been already
treading. Abide in the calling in which you are called, unless you are
clearly told to do something else. The Spirit of Jesus waits to be to
you, O pilgrim, what He was to Paul. Only be careful to obey His least
prohibition; and where, after believing prayer, there are no apparent
hindrances, go forward with enlarged heart. Do not be surprised if the
answer comes in closed doors. But when doors are shut right and left,
an open road is sure to lead to Troas. There Luke awaits, and visions
will point the way, where vast opportunities stand open, and faithful
friends are waiting. --Paul, by Meyer
Is there some problem in your life to solve,
Some passage seeming full of mystery?
God knows, who brings the hidden things to light.
He keeps the key.
Is there some door closed by the Father's hand
Which widely opened you had hoped to see?
Trust God and wait--for when He shuts the door
He keeps the key.
Is there some earnest prayer unanswered yet,
Or answered NOT as you had thought 'twould be?
God will make clear His purpose by-and-by.
He keeps the key.
Have patience with your God, your patient God,
All wise, all knowing, no long tarrier He,
And of the door of all thy future life
He keeps the key.
Unfailing comfort, sweet and blessed rest,
To know of EVERY door He keeps the key.
That He at last when just HE sees 'tis best,
Will give it THEE.

Friend of the World or of God?
Genesis 12:14-20
Abraham's downward steps away from God eventually led to open rebuke.
The Bible says, "Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that
thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy
wife? Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to
me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way"
(Gen. 12:18,19).
It is sad when a child of God has to be corrected by the world. All of
this came about because of Abraham's lack of faith, which resulted in
his going to Egypt--a symbol of the world of unbelief.
We, too, need to be careful about our friendship with the world. The
Word of God says, "Know ye not that the friendship of the world is
enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is
the enemy of God" (James 4:4).
Check your life. Are you a friend of the world? According to this
verse, if you are a friend of the world, you are an enemy of God.
The time that the Christian spends in a backslidden state is wasted
time. Abraham's time in Egypt was wasted as far as his spiritual
progress was concerned.
While trying to be a friend of the world, the believer is only
building with wood, hay and stubble--which someday will be consumed by
the fire of judgment. The believer will receive no reward for this
kind of work (see 1 Cor. 3:12-15).
"Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of
God" (James 4:4).

God's Separation
And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand
before Pharaoh; lo, he cometh forth to the water; and say unto him,
Thus saith the LORD, Let My people go, that they may serve Me.
In a great many respects the righteous and unrighteous appear to be
treated alike in this life. God "maketh His sun to rise on the evil
and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust"
(Matthew 5:45). However, lest the righteous begin feeling sorry for
themselves, we must not forget that a day of separation is coming when
the Shepherd will divide His sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31-33).
The sun will not forever rise on the unrighteous.
But if we look more closely, even in this life God puts a division
between His people and those of the world. Satan complained that God
had made a hedge around Job. Solomon said that the Lord "is a shield
to those who walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of justice, and
preserveth the way of His saints" (Proverbs 2:7-8).
A prime example of the Lord's protection for His people is the plagues
of Egypt. After his death, there arose a king over Egypt who knew not
Joseph. The Israelites became slaves with taskmasters set over them to
afflict them. Moses was called of God to lead the Jews out of this
land of bondage and into the promised land. But when Moses and Aaron
confronted the Egyptian king about letting God's people go, the
pharaoh only increased the burden on the Jews. The ruler hardened his
heart and there began in Egypt a series of plagues the likes of which
have not been seen since anywhere in the world.
First, their water supply turned to blood. Then frogs covered the
land. Next, it was the plague of lice or gnats. After this the Lord
said to Moses, "Rise up early in the morning, and stand before
Pharaoh" (Exodus 8:20). The man of God warned the Egyptian king that
if he would not let God's people go, the land would become black with
flies.
These were not ordinary houseflies but horseflies. They are described
by the historian Philo and other travelers as a very severe scourge.
More numerous and annoying than houseflies, these gadflies fasten
themselves to the human body, especially around the edges of the
eyelids, and suck blood from the agonized victim. They would swarm and
fill the houses of the Egyptians causing severe pain and distress.
But here for the first time an additional promise is made. God said He
would set apart the land of Goshen, where His people Israel dwelt, and
absolutely no swarm of flies would enter there. A division between
God's people and the people of Egypt was to be formed. In fact, this
division meant redemption. God would redeem Israel and protect them
from the devastating swarm.
The Bible clearly indicates the purpose of this division was "to the
end thou mayest know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth."
God's setting apart of the land of Goshen was calculated to impress
the worldly Egyptians that Jehovah alone is God. This was no trick of
Egyptian magic; it was the direct intervention of God in human
affairs. Jehovah caused a plague to fall on the unrighteous and peace
to fall on the righteous.
Even today the Lord is separating a people for His name. The believer
is set apart as a testimony to the world that Jehovah is God and He is
in absolute control of the universe. God's people are to be a distinct
and blessed group, in the world but not of it. We are set apart from
the penalty of sin that plagues the world around us. Likewise we are
set apart unto service for the God who saved us. Let's praise Him
today for His grace in our behalf.
MORNING HYMN
O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home!

Today's Promise from the Bible
Isaiah 1:19
If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land:
Reflection
Even as God promised to bless His people under the Old Covenant, how
much greater is the blessing under the New Covenant! Every believer is
already granted all spiritual blessing in the realm heavenly. And
more—for soon all of God's children will rejoice together in the
fulfilment of their promised heavenly rest, drinking from rivers of
living water and eating of the very tree of life itself!
