UNDERSTANDING WHO YOU ARE
Romans 8:14
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God
I enjoy asking people, "Who are you?" It sounds like a simple question
requiring a simple answer, but it really isn't. For example, if someone
asked me, "Who are you?" I might answer, "Neil Anderson."
"No, that's your name. Who are you?"
"I'm an American."
"No, that's where you live."
I could also say that I'm five feet nine inches tall and a little over 150
pounds--actually quite a little over 150 pounds! But my physical dimensions
and appearance aren't me either. If you chopped off my arms and legs, would
I still be me? If you transplanted my heart, kidneys or liver, would I
still be me? Of course! Now if you keep chopping, you'll get to me
eventually because I'm in here somewhere. But who I am is far more than
what you see on the outside.
We may say with the apostle Paul that we "recognize no man according to the
flesh." But we tend to identify ourselves and each other primarily by
physical appearance (tall, short, stocky, slender) or by what we do
(plumber, carpenter, nurse, engineer, clerk). Furthermore, when asked to
identify ourselves in relation to our faith, we usually talk about our
doctrinal position (Protestant, evangelical, Calvinist, charismatic), our
denominational preference (Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, Independent),
or our role in the church (Sunday school teacher, choir member, deacon,
usher).
But is who you are determined by what you do, or is what you do determined
by who you are? That's an important question, especially as it relates to
Christian maturity. I subscribe to the latter. I believe wholeheartedly
that your hope for growth, meaning and fulfillment as a Christian is based
on understanding who you are--specifically your identity in Christ as a
child of God. Your understanding of who you are in Christ will greatly
determine how you live your life.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know I am complete in You. Don't allow me to fall
back into fleshly attributes today in an attempt to impress others or You.

Read Genesis 19 – 21
Highlights:
Sodom destroyed; Lot and his daughters; birth of Isaac; Hagar and Ishmael;
agreement between Abraham and Abimelech.
Lot was wealthy and obviously had a prominent position in Sodom since he
sat in the gate of Sodom where business and legal matters were conducted
(Gen. 19:1). Lot associated with the people of Sodom because he could
market his livestock, milk, cheese, etc., even though he was vexed with
(troubled by) the filthy conversation (shameless conduct) of the wicked (II
Pet. 2:7).
The Scriptures denounce homosexuality for which Sodom was known. Since
homosexuality is so detestable in the eyes of God, we should pray that
those involved will repent and forsake this sin (I Cor. 6:9-11). The Law of
God groups homosexuality with incest and bestiality (Lev. 18:6-30; 20:13;
Rom. 1:24-27).
Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of
which God had spoken to him (Gen. 21:2). Isaac, the miracle child of the
promise of God, entered the family life of Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar the
bondwoman. Hagar's son Ishmael soon revealed his true character through his
contempt for Isaac. In the New Testament we read that Abraham had two sons,
the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. . . . these are the two
Covenants (agreements); the one from the Mount Sinai, which gendereth
(leads) to bondage, which is Agar (Hagar). . . . Now we, brethren, as Isaac
was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the
flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now
(Gal. 4:22,24,28-29).
These two sons, Ishmael and Isaac, illustrate the dual nature of our lives.
We are first born of the flesh (through human parents) (John 3:6),
symbolized by Ishmael. But the moment a sinner believes in his heart that
Jesus Christ died on the cross for his sins, repents of them, and confesses
Christ as Savior and Lord of his life, God gives them power to become the
sons of God (1:12). This is symbolized by Isaac, the child of faith.
On the Day of Pentecost, Peter answered the people by saying: Repent, and
be baptized . . . and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost (Spirit)
(Acts 2:38; also Rom. 10:9-10; I John 3:1-2; 4:15). We do not become
sinless, but we are freed from the power of sin (Rom. 6:6-7). They that are
Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections (passions) and lusts.
If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:24-25).
Thought for Today:
If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed (John
8:36).
Christ Portrayed:
By Isaac, the promised son of the Covenant of God (Gen. 21:12). Faith in
Christ sets us free from the bondage of the Law because God made a new
Covenant through Christ (Matt. 26:28; Mark 14:24; Luke 22:20; I Cor. 11:25;
also Heb. 12:24).
Word Studies:
19:3 pressed upon, urged them; 19:5 know, rape and abuse; 19:8 shadow,
protection; 19:13 is waxen, has become; 20:6 suffered, allowed; 20:16 a
covering of the eyes, compensation; 21:18 hold him in thine hand, take care
of him.

Genesis 9
God covenants with Noah never to flood the earth again.
INSIGHT
A person is only as good as his word. If he is true to his word, he can be
trusted; if he is not, he cannot. It is as simple as that. God promised
that He would never destroy the earth with a flood again. He went even
further by saying, "While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and
heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease" (based on
Genesis 8:22). Then God set a rainbow in the sky as a sign of His promise.
For thousands of years, God has been true to His Word. We sometimes get
discouraged during the tough times in life, because we tend to focus on our
particular circumstances rather than the promises of God.
We must remember the rainbow. God is true to His Word. He can be trusted.
PRAYER
· Along with the psalmist, praise God for His wonderful trustworthiness:
I have trusted in Your mercy;
My heart shall rejoice in Your salvation.
I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me
(Psalm 13:5-6).
· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life in fellowship with
Him:
Hear, O Lord, when I cry with my voice!
Have mercy also upon me, and answer me
(Psalm 27:7).
· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:
I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities
nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth,
nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of
God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 8:38-39).
· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· greater trust in God's Word,
· the work of missions in China and the rest of the Orient,
· the concerns of your heart.
· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord, in whom you can have
complete confidence:
The earth is the Lord's, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell therein.
For He has founded it upon the seas,
And established it upon the waters
(Psalm 24:1-2).

The Question of Calling
"I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that
you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his
glorious inheritance in the saints?" (Eph 1:18-19).
I walked up to the man and said, "Hello, my name is Os. What's yours?" His
name was also Os - Os Guinness. It was the first time he had ever had such
an experience. We chuckled about our unique names.
Os Guinness was named after Oswald Chambers. He has become a well-known
contemporary writer and has a real interest in the subject of "calling"
just as I do. He has written a masterful work entitled, "The Call." In it
he shares some important truths about "calling".
"What do I mean by 'calling'? For the moment, let me say simply that
"calling" is the truth that God calls us to himself so decisively that
everything we are, everything we do, and everything we have is invested
with a special devotion and dynamism lived out as a response to his summons
and service.
There is a distinction between a later, special calling and our original,
ordinary calling. Selfishness prefers the first, but stewardship respects
both. A special calling refers those tasks and missions laid on individuals
through a direct, specific, supernatural communication from God. Ordinary
calling, on the other hand, is the believer's sense of life-purpose and
life-task in response to God's primary call, 'follow me,' even when there
is no direct, specific, supernatural communication from God about a
secondary calling.
In other words, ordinary calling can be seen in our responsibility to
exercise a high degree of 'capitalist-style' enterprise about how we live
our lives. For example, the servants in Jesus' parable for the talents and
pounds were assessed according to how they 'got on with it' when the master
was away. In this sense no follower of Christ is without a calling, for we
all have an original calling even if we do not all have a later, special
calling. And, of course, some people have both."*
We are all called to Someone first, then something. As we grow in our
knowledge and obedience to Christ, God fulfills our calling in life.

~CALLED TO HIS SERVICE~
Called unto his service to do his blessed will
He will give us power, as at his feet, we humbly kneel.
There is a wind of God blowing ---all across this land,
The wind of the Holy Spirit will help his children stand.
Power to face each battle in the strength of His might
We do not have to stand alone....He fights for what is right,
The power of his presence will fill our hearts with love,
We know that we shall overcome, as we look to our Lord above.
Called to fulfill a mission while we walk through this land
One day we shall enter heaven's gates and at his throne shall stand,
We shall answer for the works we did, while in his service each day,
We must press on faithfully and stay in the glorious gospel way.

A Lapse Into Sin
Therefore Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his
servants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were
sore afraid.
Our folly and God's grace; if you see one, can the other be far
behind? Frequent are the occasions when God's children foolishly mire
themselves in difficulty only to have God graciously dig them out.
Even the venerable Abraham found himself in this situation more than
once.
After the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Abraham departed from the
groves of Mamre and journeyed south to the Negev. Here he dwelt
between Kadesh and Shur, pitching his tent in Gerar. Upon arriving in
the south country Abraham hatched a plan which he had tried
unsuccessfully in Egypt some twenty years earlier. He instructed his
wife, Sarah, to claim that she was his sister.
Because of the disastrous consequences which it previously had brought
on the pharaoh of Egypt, it is almost inconceivable that Abraham would
try this scheme again. Apparently the stern rebuke Abraham received
from Pharaoh had by this time faded from his memory. Still, Abraham
had only recently received God's assurance that Sarah was destined to
be the mother of the promised seed. By spreading the half truth that
she was his sister and therefore eligible for marriage, Abraham placed
Sarah's virtue in serious jeopardy. This constituted a foolish lapse
in Abraham's usually stellar performance as the friend of God.
The arrival of Abraham and Sarah brought a greeting from Abimelech,
the warlike king of Gerar. Having heard that Sarah was unmarried,
Abimelech immediately sent and brought her into his harem. This likely
was done to ally himself with the rich nomad prince, Abraham. Sarah
was by this time ninety years old and probably not the beautiful maid
she used to be. Suddenly Abraham's lie had come back to haunt him once
again.
The whole course of human history could have been different if it were
not for God's intervention. Genesis 20:3 begins, "But God," words
which usually indicate the turning point between man's foolishness and
God's grace. Abraham had lied about his wife and she was now part of
Abimelech's harem. Her virtue would undoubtedly be violated. But God
warned the Philistine king in a dream that Sarah was already a man's
wife. He also caused Abimelech to be afflicted with an illness which
prevented him from coming near Sarah. Thus, miraculously and
graciously, the mother of the chosen nation was kept from impurity,
not because of the wisdom of Abraham, but because of the grace of God.
In the dream God revealed to Abimelech that, although he had done no
wrong, nevertheless he must restore Sarah to her husband. If the king
refused, his death and that of all his kingdom would ensue. This was
enough to convince Abimelech. The king "rose early in the morning, and
called all his servants," relaying the message to them (Genesis 20:8).
Respecting the authority of the living God, Abimelech was anxious to
heed the divine directives. The Philistine wasted no time in returning
Sarah to her husband but not without a sharp rebuke to Abraham. Happy
to have his wife back safe and sound, Abraham received the reprimand
with a sigh of relief. In return he prayed to God and Abimelech was
healed along with his wife and maidservants. The kingdom returned to
normal.
Once again God's grace had prevailed over man's folly. The results
could have been drastically different, however, had not God's
providence overruled man's foolishness. Yet, how much anguish could
have been spared both Abraham and Abimelech, both Sarah and the
Philistine's wife, if there had not been that one lapse from
righteousness. The knowledge that God's grace is waiting in the wings
is insufficient grounds for contemplating foolish action. As Abraham
finally learned, every friend of God must carefully guard against even
slight lapses into the folly of sin (Romans 6:1-4).
MORNING HYMN
Sinners Jesus will receive;
Sound this word of grace to all
Who the heav'nly pathway leave,
All who linger, all who fall.
