But when Peter saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and
beginning to sink he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"
( Matthew 14:26,27,29 & 30 *NKJV )
Now Peter began to sink because he took his eyes off of Jesus, and
focused on the wind & waves all around him. This was because his faith
faltered. So what did Peter do but reach out to Jesus who was the only
one that could save
him! You see Peter forgot to; Walk by faith, not by sight.
( 2 CORINTHIANS 5:7 )
Now we may not be walking on water, but when our troubles surround us,
if we focus on them instead of placing our faith in Jesus, we will
start to sink as well!
So when you are facing difficulties and troubles surround you; keep
your eyes on Jesus' power
rather then on your problems. Also when you are apprehensive about
your troubles, and if you doubt Christ's presence or His great ability
to help; remember that He is the only one that can really help you as
well!
Now tonight why not read this story. You will find it in The
Book of Matthew, Chapter 14, verses 22-33, for wonderful reading it
truly is!
Finally, Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all
that you do be done with love. Amen.
( 1 Corinthians 16:13 )

When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were troubled,
saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately
Jesus spoke to them, saying, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be
afraid." So He said, "Come." And when Peter had come down out of the
boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus. But when he saw that the
wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried
out, saying, "Lord, save me!"

Coming Through as Pure Gold
"But He knoweth the way that I take: when He hath tried me, I shall
come forth as gold." Job 23:10
In order to refine gold, a goldsmith places gold over a fire until it
bubbles and glows. He skims off the impurity from the top and knows
that when he can see his reflection, the gold is pure.
That is what the Lord is doing when you go through trials. When He can
see His likeness reproduced in your life, He'll know that you have
become gold fit for His use and for His glory.
But, the fire is hot! Yes, but God controls it. No jeweler is more
careful with his gold than a father with his children. He knows what
He is doing. But, what about those things He is burning out of my
life? You don't need them. If you needed them, your loving Father
would make sure you kept them.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and
of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
Hebrews 4:12
I heard about a vacuum cleaner salesman who was up in the hills of
Arkansas and was showing one of his vacuum cleaners from house to
house. So he got to one house on the backside of a mountain, and he
walked in at the invitation of a lady and said, "Ma'am, I guarantee
you this vacuum cleaner will suck up every piece of dirt on your floor
anywhere in your house."
Then he went over to the fireplace, got a bunch of ashes in his hands,
threw them on the floor, and said, "I'm so convinced that this vacuum
cleaner will suck up those ashes that I'll personally eat them with a
spoon if this vacuum cleaner won't do it!"
So the lady of the house said, "Well, you better start eating because
we ain't got no electricity in this house!"
Now, the Bible works because unlike that vacuum cleaner, it has all
the power it needs. And because of that, it brings the power of God to
our lives. Yet, many believers today are living a 'Bible-less'
Christianity. They want all the benefits of the Christian life, but
they're missing out on the greatest one of all: the wisdom and power
of God.
So as you walk with Christ, remember the powerful resource God's given
you in His Word and you'll tap into His never-ending resources!
THE BIBLE 'WORKS' BECAUSE IT HAS THE POWER OF GOD. SO AS YOU LIVE THE
CHRISTIAN LIFE, STAY CONNECTED WITH GOD'S WORD!

Love Worth Finding Ministries
Satisfied Just Skimming the Surface?
BIBLE MEDITATION:
"He that hath My commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth
Me: and he that loveth Me shall be loved of My Father, and I will love
him, and will manifest Myself to him." John 14:21
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
A little boy fell out of bed and was crying. His mother came, picked
him up, and said, "Honey, what's wrong? How did you fall out of bed?"
He said, "Well, I guess I went to sleep too close to where I got in."
I think there are a lot of people who have done exactly that. They get
into Christ and somehow they just seem to go to sleep right there.
They say, "I'm saved and that's it." But friend, that's not it. It's
just the beginning of a relationship that will last through all
eternity.
ACTION POINT:
God wants to move you further into a knowledge of Himself. I don't
know about you, but I'm not satisfied with the status quo of my life.
I want to go deep into the heart of Jesus. I desire the same for you.

With Jesus in the School of Prayer
One of the first lessons we give to our infant children is how to
talk. We look at them as they first learn to follow us with their eyes
and say "momma…daddy" and so on. We teach them how to talk, and they
learn by imitation and repetition.
One of the first lessons we need to learn from our Heavenly Father is
His 'how to talk to Me' lesson. These lessons are what the Bible
teaches on prayer. If you have never done so, you would be enriched
beyond measure to go from cover to cover in this book and personally
find out all that your Father wants you to know about prayer.
· Prayer in the Word of God is mentioned about 350 times.
· The word "pray" and "prayer" however are actually
translations of ten different Hebrew words and seven different Greek
words. So we might say that God offers us an amazing multitude of
personalized options in our approach to Him. Each of these 17 words
portrays attitudes and approaches to communing with our Great Almighty
King!
Prayer is often seen as being like incense in the Scriptures. Note the
prayers of the saints in Revelation 5:8. The famed Old Testament
scholar Wilson notes this word means, "To entreat, to make earnest and
fervent prayer, which ascends like incense before God. Others think
the primary meaning is power and abundance, as well as sweet odor."
All of us need to exercise ourselves in ceaseless prayer. As Jesus
told His disciples in Mark 9, there is territory we will never enter
for Him without learning the secret of Supplication which is fasting
(denying ourselves) and praying (seeking God's intervention and help
in specific events and people). So today we need to discipline
ourselves for the purpose of prayer!
Here are just a few simple habits that many of us have learned to
practice. These simple methods can revolutionize the prayer life of
those who find extended prayer difficult:
· READING PRAYER:Don't simply read through letters, but read
and pray. After each paragraph quickly pray about what you just read.
· WATCHING PRAYER:When you watch something take place live, or
on TV, immediately pray about what you are seeing. Especially do this
after news programs.
· TALKING PRAYER:When you talk on the telephone, pray for the
person you're talking with. If it is a believer, you can pray
together on the phone. This will likely lead you to a double ministry
of prayer and encouragement!
· LISTENING PRAYER:As you hear things in a meeting, on the
radio, or almost anywhere - quickly lift to God in prayer what you are
hearing.
· WRITING PRAYER:As you shoot off emails – send them with a
touch of God requested by prayer. When you write a letter or card
(which is a great ministry in itself), pray about what you are writing
and, of course, for the person you are writing to.

Jesus Our Intimate Friend
Matthew 26:47-50
I've counseled plenty of folks who argue that they are not worthy of
God's love. Of all the passages I could point to that describe the
Lord's devotion, today's is the one I think best showcases the
unqualified friendship He offers His followers.
As Jesus was praying in the garden of Gethsemane on the night before
His crucifixion, Judas Iscariot approached him with a band of men. The
betrayer stepped forward and kissed the Lord's cheek. And what was
Jesus' response? According to another disciple, Matthew, He called the
man "Friend" (Matt. 26:50).
Judas expected Jesus to establish His kingdom on earth and drive the
Romans out of Israel—anyone who could calm a storm at sea could easily
remove an oppressive government! But Judas's interest in Jesus was
more personal and political than spiritual. In fact, John reported
that his fellow disciple stole from the money box (12:6). Today the
man's name is synonymous with those who betray others for personal
gain.
In spite of Judas' greed, blind ambition, and betrayal, Jesus never
stopped loving him; He still used the word "friend" to address the one-
time disciple. The Lord does not place conditions on His love or
reject people who fail to meet certain standards. He simply cares for
us as we are.
People cannot earn Jesus Christ's love and friendship. He takes the
initiative, reaches out, and draws into fellowship those who are
willing. We are not worthy, but we are privileged to live in His love
anyway. In the Lord, we find a friend who sticks closer than a brother
(Prov. 18:24).

THE OPENED SIGHT
To open their eyes ... that they may receive ...
Acts 26:18
This verse is the grandest condensation of the propaganda of a
disciple of Jesus Christ in the whole of the New Testament.
The first sovereign work of grace is summed up in the word - "that
they may receive remission of sins." When a man fails in personal
Christian experience, it is nearly always because he has never
received anything. The only sign that a man is saved is that he has
received something from Jesus Christ. Our part as workers for God is
to open men's eyes that they may turn themselves from darkness to
light; but that is not salvation, that is conversion - the effort of
a roused human being. I do not think it is too sweeping to say that
the majority of nominal Christians are of this order; their eyes are
opened, but they have received nothing. Conversion is not
regeneration. This is one of the neglected factors in our preaching
today. When a man is born again, he knows that it is because he has
received something as a gift from Almighty God and not because of his
own decision. People register their vows, and sign their pledges, and
determine to go through, but none of this is salvation. Salvation
means that we are brought to the place where we are able to receive
something from God on the authority of Jesus Christ, viz., remission
of sins.
Then there follows the second mighty work of grace - "and inheritance
among them which are sanctified." In sanctification the regenerated
soul deliberately gives up his right to himself to Jesus Christ, and
identifies himself entirely with God's interest in other men.

Psalm 4:4
Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed,
and be still.
Jennifer lay in her bed, listening to the approaching thunder. Storms
scared her, yet something deep inside thrilled at their coming. She
closed her eyes and imagined the thunder as the voice of God spreading
across the face of the earth. There was a strange comfort in the
thought that God would thunder forth in such a way. Jennifer began to
pray to God, confident that He would hear her and be with her. In the
wee small hours of the night. Jennifer drifted off, asleep in the
loving arms of God until morning.
In the face of the storms of life, we need the confidence that our
Lord will be with us and that He will grant us peace. The peace of the
Lord is the strongest force on earth, and those who find their peace
in the Lord need never fear. Look deep inside and dwell with the
Spirit of God in your heart. There you will find the calm that no
storm can disturb.
Prayer: O Lord, grant me Thy perfect peace, and lift me above the
storms of my life. I trust in Your great love. Be with me, I pray.
Amen.

January 9, 2012 *[image: Daily Devotional] * *Sin can be overcome**
**But put on the Lord Jesus Christ. Romans 13:14, HCSB*
Every sin can be overcome. Don't allow yourself to admit to any exception,
for if you do, this exception will be the loose bolt that causes the bridge
to fall down. One of the sad things about certain sections of the
modern-day church is the moral fatalism that says in regard to one's sin:
"But what could I do? I am just a frail human being."
The implication is that sin is an integral part of human nature, and as
long as we remain human, we shall never be able to overcome sin. The clear
message of the gospel is spelled out in this verse: "Sin will not rule over
you" (Rm 6:14).
Today's text in The Amplified Biblereads: "But clothe yourself with the
Lord Jesus Christ, the Messiah, and make no provision for indulging the
flesh - put a stop to thinking about the evil cravings of your physical
nature - to gratify its desires and lusts." Notice the phrase: "make no
provision for indulging the flesh." In other words, do not provide for
failure; provide for victory. There must be an absoluteness about the whole
thing.
There are dangers in pretending we are winning the battle against sin when
we are not, or in approaching the whole issue from self-effort. But these
dangers, in my opinion, are not as great as mentally providing for sin in
our lives. The tyranny of this fatalism - that as long as we are in the
flesh, we must expect to sin - must be broken. The Christian life must be
lived from the standpoint that we expect not to sin. I repeat: every sin
can be overcome.
*Daily Prayer*
My Father and my God, help me to lay hold on the fact that Your offer is
not simply to help me realize what sin is, but to release me from it. May I
enter more and more into that glorious deliverance day by day. Amen.

*Psalm 139:1-6,
13-18<https://mail.google.com/mail/html/compose/static_files/blank_quirks.html#134c650aff802517_verses>
(Click

"It's all about me." So it appears at first glance with Psalm 139. But that
may not be all bad for the person who needs some affirmation about who they
are. Why? Because it is not only about the individual, it is about God as
well. For the person at the end of hope, here is acknowledgment of
relationship. Now that God is there, the journey can proceed with
confidence, even in our angst.
The human creature, "fearfully and wonderfully made," cannot be of little
worth given what God has done. The nature of God is revealed in a creation
where an ecosystem reigns over complete chaos; and humanity is a beloved
part of it.
Not all is adrift and left to the whim of circumstance with this God. *"O
LORD, you have searched me and known me...."* In such capable hands the
future is secure even when threatened with the greatest of difficulties. *"I
come to the end—I am still with you."*
*Grant your world vision O God that we might appreciate with joy the wonder
of life and preserve it for the peace of the world. Amen. *

*Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18* (NRSV)
1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from
far away.
3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my
ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue, O Lord, you know it completely.
5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is so high that I cannot
attain it.
13 For it was you who formed my inward parts; you knit me together in my
mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are
your works; that I know very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In your book were written all
the days that were formed for me, when none of them as yet existed.
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them!
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand; I come to the end—I am
still with you.

*The active Word

*January 10, 2012*
*Samuel*
*Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying,
"Because I have asked for him from the LORD." 1 Samuel 1:20 (NKJV) *
*Samuel was an answer to prayer. For years, his mother Hannah cried out for
the Lord to give her the ability to conceive a child. Then one day,
according to God's perfect timing and will, her body showed signs that it
was carrying another life. Years of prayers were answered. *
*So it came as no surprise that when Hannah decided to choose a name for
her God-sent son, she settled on "Samuel," which literally means "asked of
God." Samuel's very existence was due to his mother asking and asking and
asking again for him. *
*This theme of asking God, of petitioning Him in prayer, was woven
throughout Samuel's life. He never strayed far from it. Samuel was in
continual communion with the Lord for the sake of others. And like the
summit of a majestic mountain that pierces a shroud of mist, Samuel loftily
expressed a perspective on prayer that rises above every earthly attitude
and misconception about it:*
*"Far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray
for you." 1 Samuel 12:23 (NKJV)*
*Samuel saw it as sin to not pray, and not just for himself, but also for
other people. In conception, in name, and in the fabric of his life, Samuel
is a character characterized by prayer.*
*Lord, we pray that You would touch our hearts in such a way that we would
be more like Samuel and that our lives would be characterized by continual
and constant communion with You. We pray that You would help us to grow
past the things that keep us from having our hearts unceasingly tethered to
Yours through prayer. May You change us in the deepest places of our soul
so that our perspective on prayer is transformed from a task to a natural
outflow of who we are in You.*
*
Think About It… What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?

*Testing*
*James 1:2-3, NIV: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith
develops perseverance."*
*Not many of us enjoy tests. We often view tests from one perspective,
seeing them as a critical and sometimes cruel means to judge us. Yet the
benefits of good testing far outweigh our dislike for them. Consider how
tests can be used to reveal to you the progress you have
made--demonstrating what you now know or can do that you once could not.
Tests also show us where we have areas that need improvement. Perhaps you
have heard someone say, "I think God is testing me." Perhaps He is. But
rest assured He is not doing so to see if you will pass or fail. He is not
doing so to compare you with others. Through the tests of life, God desires
to see you become stronger. He wants you to see the areas that still need
work so you can learn from your mistakes, and discover the way to have a
more abundant life in Him.*

Other Fell into Good Ground
"But other seeds fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some
an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold." Matthew 13:8 Jesus
often spoke to the people in a parable to illustrate and
apply--through familiar, everyday experiences in life--spiritual truth
to their lives. Living largely in an agricultural society, Jesus is
here using an account of a sower casting seed over a field. Scattering
the seed by hand, he was throwing it in all directions. He realized
that some of the seed would fall on unproductive ground, but he
expected most to fall on fertile ground and bring a harvest. Jesus
gives four examples that relate to the reception of the gospel as it
is spread among the people.
"When he sowed, some of the seeds fell by the wayside, and the fowls
came and devoured them." This relates to those who come under the
sound of the gospel, are attentive, and follow the form and traditions
exercised in the service. Their minds are occupied with "other
things"--plans, business, pleasure, relationships. They hear but they
do not respond nor give place to the Word that is preached. Satan,
like the fowls of the air, hovers over them to catch the seed,
diverting their minds from the truth.
"Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth, and
forthwith they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth."
These hear the Word gladly, but their affections are like a thin layer
of earth upon a rock. They are attracted by the "novelty" of the
gospel: It delights their mind, they are moved by the sufferings of
Christ, and they are impressed with the promises of God. Immediately,
they begin to make a "profession" of faith. However, when tribulation
comes, their profession withers and is burned up, because the seed was
never rooted in their understanding or will. "And some fell among
thorns: and the thorns sprung up, and choked them." They maintain a
regard for the gospel, associate with believers, and try to be
consistent in their character and profession, but the fruit they
produce is not "perfect." Their hearts were never purged from the
"thorns." Care and pleasures corrode their lives; there is always
something they desire more
than real holiness; t! here is lack of focus upon God. Therefore,
"things" choke out the seed and it is unfruitful.
"But other seeds fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit."
These receive the Word with humility, desiring to be instructed,
applying the Word to their lives, and having a hunger and thirst in
their hearts to grow in grace. They are receptive and responsive to
the Holy Spirit and bear abundant fruit. Let me challenge you. Look
within your life.
Examine and judge yourself to see which of the four examples
characterizes your life the most. Oh, that we might "plow into our
hearts" the seed of God's Word by faith, meditation, and prayer...and
so labor that there may be a bountiful harvest! May we have the desire
to have the seed fall on good ground of a receptive heart and
responsive spirit.
Satan seeks to divert our attention, encumber our lives, and cause us
to be unresponsive to every "planting of the seed" in our hearts. May
we be sensitive to God seeking to draw us to Himself that we may be
fruitful. It is only as He lives His Life through us that there will
be any fruit for eternity and for His glory..."by their fruit ye shall
know them."

I Am Your Teacher
October 22, 1986
I, God, delight to have you near Me; I love you, daughter; have faith
in Me; in less than two months you will be hearing Me distinctively, 1
I will give you the support you want; My aim is to guide you; you will
progress enormously in less than two months, for this is My will; I am
your Teacher; all My teachings will enlighten your soul; remain near
Me; Vassula, every time you feel miserable come to Me and I will
console you, for you are My beloved; I never want to see any of My
children miserable; they should come to Me and I will console them;
1 Prediction which came true. After six weeks I could hear His voice clearer.

Job 2:11, 13
Now when Job's three friends heard of all this adversity that had come
upon him, each one came from his own place--Eliphaz the Temanite,
Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite. For they had made an
appointment together to come and mourn with him, and to comfort him.
So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights,
and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his grief was very
great.
The Power of Silence
We are a chatty society. If we're not on the phone, we're sending
e-mails. Should e-mail not be available, then we dispatch a fax. In
fact, we're so addicted to verbal communication that many people can't
leave home without a cell phone or pager in their pocket. Yet in times
of sorrow, often silence says the most.
When Job's three friends arrived, they could tell that he was in deep
grief. But rather than immediately offer their condolences, they sat
with him on the ground for a whole week without saying a word. They
restrained what must have been a strong urge to offer advice and
suggestions and chose instead to express their sympathy by silently
bearing his suffering with him.
In the presence of grief, words sometimes are a hindrance. Often we
resort to speaking because we're uncomfortable with the silence rather
than because we have something to say. Consequently, when trying to
console a friend we often engage in empty cliches. People who have
borne deep anguish, however, testify that it is the silent presence of
those who care that brings the deepest comfort. It is not their words
but their quietly sharing the load of sorrow that helps the bereaved
bear up under suffering.
Don't be in a hurry to speak to those who are grieving. A hug or a
squeeze on the arm may bring more comfort than a hundred words. Ask
God's Spirit to make it clear to you when He has prepared your
friend's heart to hear your words. Until then, let your comfort be
expressed in silence and in prayer rather than words.
Less talk often means more comfort.

Made Perfect Through Suffering
"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy
to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us" (Rom.
8:18).
I kept for nearly a year the flask-shaped cocoon of an emperor moth.
It is very peculiar in its construction. A narrow opening is left in
the neck of the flask, through which the perfect insect forces its
way, so that a forsaken cocoon is as entire as one still tenanted, no
rupture of the interlacing fibers having taken place. The great
disproportion between the means of egress and the size of the
imprisoned insect makes one wonder how the exit is ever accomplished
at all--and it never is without great labor and difficulty. It is
supposed that the pressure to which the moth's body is subjected in
passing through such a narrow opening is a provision of nature for
forcing the juices into the vessels of the wings, these being less
developed at the period of emerging from the chrysalis than they are
in other insects.
I happened to witness the first efforts of my prisoned moth to escape
from its long confinement. During a whole forenoon, from time to time,
I watched it patiently striving and struggling to get out. It never
seemed able to get beyond a certain point, and at last my patience was
exhausted. Very probably the confining fibers were drier and less
elastic than if the cocoon had been left all winter on its native
heather, as nature meant it to be. At all events I thought I was wiser
and more compassionate than its Maker, and I resolved to give it a
helping hand. With the point of my scissors I snipped the confining
threads to make the exit just a very little easier, and lo!
immediately, and with perfect case, out crawled my moth dragging a
huge swollen body and little shrivelled wings. In vain I watched to
see that marvelous process of expansion in which these silently and
swiftly develop before one's eyes; and as I traced the exquisite spots
and markings of
divers colors which were all there in miniature, I longed to see
these assume their due proportions and the creature to appear in all
its perfect beauty, as it is, in truth, one of the loveliest of its
kind. But I looked in vain. My false tenderness had proved its ruin.
It never was anything but a stunted abortion, crawling painfully
through that brief life which it should have spent flying through the
air on rainbow wings. I have thought of it often, often, when watching
with pitiful eyes those who were struggling with sorrow, suffering,
and distress; and I would fain cut short the discipline and give
deliverance. Short-sighted man! How know I that one of these pangs or
groans could be spared? The far-sighted, perfect love that seeks the
perfection of its object does not weakly shrink from present,
transient suffering. Our Father's love is too true to be weak. Because
He loves His children, He chastises them that they may be partakers of
His holiness.
With this glorious end in view, He spares not for their crying. Made
perfect through sufferings, as the Elder Brother was, the sons of God
are trained up to obedience and brought to glory through much
tribulation. --Tract.

God's Peace for Our Anxieties
In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication
with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the
peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts
and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
PHILIPPIANS 4:6,7 (RV)
JUST think of having His wonderful peace guarding one's heart and
one's thoughts all day long. But it is only on condition that we
fulfil the sixth verse, "In nothing be anxious,"--this is a distinct
command, and, if we fail to fulfil it, we shall not get the blessing.
Sorrow even is anxiety, and should be laid upon our blessed Lord. Then
in prayer and supplication we must not forget that thanksgiving is
also distinctly commanded; we must praise God for His dealings with
us, even though we cannot make them out at times. Pray God to make you
cease from anxiety about yourself and your plans; just be willing to
do the work our dear Father gives you at the time.

Oh, how great peace and quietness would he possess who should cut off
all vain anxiety and place all his confidence in God.

Altar Neglect Brings Failure
Genesis 12:9-13
After Abraham pitched his tent, built an altar and called upon the
name of the Lord, the Scriptures say that "Abram journeyed, going on
still toward the south" (Gen. 12:9).
Instead of staying where he had his altar--his contact with
God--Abraham went farther south. He went away from the altar and made
"provision for the flesh" (Rom. 13:14).
Have you not also found that failures arise when you neglect the
altar? The altar is representative of our communion and fellowship
with God. Do you have an altar?
It is common to refer to the "family altar." This means having a time
when the family reads the Word of God and prays together. But do you
also have an individual altar--a time alone with God for Bible reading
and prayer?
You desperately need this time with God; to omit it is to invite all
kinds of trials and failures into your life.
I do not think I am exaggerating when I say that 85 percent of the
failures and trials that Christians have can be traced to the fact
that their altar relationship with God is not right. They have moved
away from the time of fellowship with Him.
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Ps. 119:105).

Morning Corruption
I said, Surely thou will fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; so
their dwelling should not be cut off, howsoever I punished them: but
they rose early, and corrupted all their doings.
Zephaniah is a book of contrasts. Perhaps no other prophecy in the Old
Testament paints a blacker picture of God's judgment than does
Zephaniah. It is a foreboding portrait of the day of Jehovah, the day
of the Lord. Still, no prophet paints a brighter picture of Israel's
future glory.
Zephaniah was a unique prophet. A contemporary of Jeremiah, more is
known about the pedigree of Zephaniah than any other prophet. The
first verse of this prophecy shows that his lineage was in the royal
line; he was the great-great-grandson of good King Hezekiah. His royal
heritage makes Zephaniah's rebuke of the nobles and princes all the
more significant. He spoke to Judah and Jerusalem as one of their own,
as royalty.
Taking occasion from the threat of invasion by the savage Scythian
hordes from the north, Zephaniah preached of the coming of the great
day of judgment on Judah and Jerusalem. With all the fervor of a
revivalist, Zephaniah announced, "The great day of the LORD is
near.... That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a
day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a
day of clouds and thick darkness.... And I will bring distress upon
men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned
against the LORD; and their blood shall be poured out as dust....
Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in
the day of the LORD'S wrath...for He shall make even a speedy riddance
of all them that dwell in the land" (Zephaniah 1:14-18).
In the three chapters of this tiny book nearly every word is laced
with a warning about God's wrath. In chapter 1 the utter desolation of
Judah is predicted as a judgment for idolatry and neglect of the Lord.
In chapter 2 Zephaniah predicts that the house of Judah as well as her
enemies, Moab and Ammon, will be threatened with perpetual
destruction. In chapter 3 he turns his attention to the city of
Jerusalem, calling it "filthy and polluted" and "the oppressing city."
Hurling invectives at Jerusalem's princes, her judges, her prophets,
and her priests, Zephaniah warns that "the just LORD is in the midst
thereof; He will not do iniquity: every morning doth He bring His
judgment to light, He faileth not" (Zephaniah 3:5). Literally, morning
by morning God will bring His judgment on the wicked city of
Jerusalem. No one who defies the Lord God ever escapes punishment.
Still, the princes, prophets, priests, and inhabitants of Jerusalem
paid no attention to Zephaniah's warning. Instead, "they rose early
and corrupted all their doings" (Zephaniah 3:7).
Although this section of Zephaniah's prophecy ends with the failure of
the people to heed his warnings, nonetheless the prophet concludes
with a series of promises (Zephaniah 3:8-20). The general tone of this
last portion is messianic, speaking of the day when Christ will gather
the nations and assemble His kingdoms, the day in which He will be in
the midst of Jerusalem on Mount Zion, and the faithful remnant of
Israel will rejoice and sing praises unto Him.
Zephaniah's life as a prophet was a miserable one; he was unheeded and
mocked. Still, the future fulfillment of all his prophecies will grant
him eternal vindication. It would be Zephaniah's prayer that none of
us today rise early to corrupt our ways. Let's answer his prayer.
MORNING HYMN
For the Lord our God shall come
And shall take His harvest home:
From His field shall in that day
All offenses purge away--
Give His angels charge at last
In the fire the tares to cast
But the fruitful ears to store
In His garner evermore.
