SUCCESSFUL CHRISTIAN LIVING

Galatians 5:1
We are to grow up in all aspects into Him (Ephesians 4:15). It was for
freedom that Christ set us free

There are two concepts which determine the victory and fruitfulness of a
Christian. The first concept is maturity. Paul wrote: "We are to grow up in
all aspects into Him, who is the head, even Christ . . . to a mature man,
to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ"
(Ephesians 4:15, 13). God has given us everything we need to grow to
maturity in Christ (2 Peter 1:3). But Satan is opposed to our maturity and
will do anything he can to keep us from realizing who we are and what we
have in Christ. We must experience victory over the dark side before we can
fully mature.

The second concept of the successful Christian life is freedom. Paul
declared: "It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep
standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery" (Galatians
5:1). This verse not only assures us that God wants us free, but also warns
us that we can lose our freedom by returning to the law.

Before we received Christ, we were slaves to sin. But because of Christ's
work on the cross, sin's power over us has been broken. Satan has no right
of ownership or authority over us. He is a defeated foe, but he is
committed to keeping us from realizing that. He knows he can block your
effectiveness as a Christian if he can deceive you into believing that you
are nothing but a product of your past, subject to sin, prone to failure,
and controlled by your habits. As long as he can confuse you and blind you
with his dark lies, you won't be able to see that the chains which once
bound you are broken. You are free in Christ, but if the devil can deceive
you into believing you're not, you won't experience the freedom which is
your inheritance. I don't believe in instant maturity, but I do believe in
instant freedom, and I have seen thousands of people set free by the truth.
Once a person is free, you would be amazed at how quickly he or she matures!

Prayer: Lord, I rejoice that it was for my freedom that You came to set me
free. Remind me today to walk in Your freedom.

Read Genesis 13 – 15
Highlights:
Abram and Lot separate; Abram moves to Hebron, and builds an altar; Lot
rescued; Melchizedek blesses Abram; Covenant of God with Abram.
The testing of Abram's faith began after he and Lot left Ur of the Chaldees
in obedience to the call of God to journey more than 500 miles to the
promised land (Gen. 11:31; 12:4). Upon arrival, he discovered there was a
famine so they went into Egypt (12:10-20). Returning from Egypt they
traveled south near Sodom where the pastureland was best. Abram and Lot
both had large flocks. Soon there was a strife (quarreling) between the
herdmen of Abram's cattle and . . . of Lot's cattle (13:7). Abram could
have taken the best for himself since he was older than his nephew, as well
as being the spiritual leader of his family. Instead, he graciously said to
Lot: Let there be no strife . . . for we be (are) brethren. Is not the
whole land before thee? separate thyself . . . from me: if thou wilt take
the left . . . then I will go to the right (13:8-9). Lot selfishly took
advantage of Abram and greedily chose the whole land — all the well-watered
plain near Sodom.
It was after this experience that Abram received a promise from the Lord
that He would make Abram's seed (descendants) as numerous as the dust of
the earth (13:16). Abram went farther northwest to live in the plain of
Mamre . . . in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD (13:18). Lot
decided to ignore his spiritual need to be in fellowship with Abram.
Instead, he compromised and made friends with the people of Sodom, who were
wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly (13:10-13).
Lot was typical of many Christians today who deplore our wicked society but
still make decisions based on personal material advantages. Only a few
listen seriously to their Savior, who said: No servant can serve two
masters (Luke 16:13). When determining where we live or where we work, our
first consideration should be: "Where can I best serve the Lord?"
Before his conversion, the Apostle Paul was a prominent Pharisee. But after
he trusted Christ as Savior, notice what he wrote concerning his career
choice: What things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea
doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the
knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all
things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ (Phil. 3:7-8). It
is no surprise that God could use him to write most of the New Testament.
Paul's choice was similar to that of Joshua whom God chose to lead His
people into the promised land and who proclaimed: Fear the LORD, and serve
Him in sincerity. . . . choose you this day whom ye will serve . . . as for
me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:14-15).
Thought for Today:
I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ
Jesus (Phil. 3:14).
Christ Portrayed:
By the high priest, Melchizedek (Gen. 14:18-20; Heb. 4:15-16; 5:5-10;
7:1-4). Today Christ is our High Priest who is interceding in prayer for us
and who alone is deserving of our gifts and service to Him.
Word Studies:
13:6 bear, support; 13:12 toward, near; 14:11 victuals, provisions, food;
14:13 confederate, allies; 14:17 dale, valley; 15:4 shall come forth out of
thine own bowels, is your own flesh and blood.
Prayer Needs:

Genesis 7

God causes the great Flood.
INSIGHT
God protects His righteous ones -- always. The child of God need never fear
any imagined "random blows of fate," for they will never fall. Yes, we
receive blows -- but they are never random, and blind fate cannot wield
them.
The Lord said to Noah, "Come into the ark . . . because I have seen that
you are righteous before Me in this generation" (Genesis 7:1). Then He
delivered Noah and his family from a deluge that obliterated life on this
earth.
That is how far God will go to save His people from harm. When we feel the
blows of adversity, we can take comfort in this: God goes to the ends of
the earth to protect us from the things which would destroy us.
PRAYER
· As you consider the protection which is yours from the hand of a loving
God, offer Him this psalm of praise:

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion,
Slow to anger and great in mercy.
The Lord is good to all,
And His tender mercies are over all His
works (Psalm 145:8-9).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord to keep your life free from sin and
in
fellowship with Him:
Though my sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool
(based on Isaiah 1:18).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through
our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this
grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God (Romans
5:1-2).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· greater love for others,
· the work of missions in the Middle East, Australia, and the islands,
· your prayer list.

· Now offer this prayer of worship to the Lord, rejoicing in God's
protection throughout your life:

Now to Him who is able to establish us according to His gospel and the
preaching of Jesus Christ . . . to God, alone wise, be glory through Jesus
Christ forever. Amen (based on Romans 16:25, 27).

Discovering Your Purpose

"You know me inside and out, you know every bone in my body; You know
exactly how I was made, bit by bit, how I was sculpted from nothing into
something." (Psalm 139: 15). (Msg)
If you are going to discover how God wants to use your life and work, you
must know why you were created. If you start trying to determine your
purpose in life before understanding why you were created, you will
inevitably get hung up on the things you do as the basis for fulfillment in
your life, which will only lead to frustration and disappointment.
First and foremost, God created you to know Him and to have an intimate
relationship with Him. In fact, God says that if a man is going to boast
about anything in life, "boast about this: that he understands and knows
me" (Jer. 9:24). Mankind's relationship with God was lost in the Garden
when Adam and Eve sinned. Jesus' death on the cross, however, allows us to
restore this relationship with God and to have an intimate fellowship with
Him. The apostle Paul came to understand this when he said, "I gave up all
that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his
resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with
him to death itself" (Phil. 3:10, THE MESSAGE).
Establishing this relationship with God is vital to understanding your
purpose. If you don't have this relationship with God, you will seek to
fulfill your purpose out of wrong motives; such as fear, insecurity, pride,
money, relationships, guilt, or unresolved anger. God's desire is for you
to be motivated out of love for Him and to desire to worship Him in all
that you do. As you develop your relationship with God, He will begin to
reveal His purpose for your life. "For I know the plans I have for you,
declares the Lord" (Jer. 29:11).

Today, ask God to help you discover your unique purpose.

Girlfriends in God

Go for the Gold Part 2
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own
understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path
to take (Proverbs 3:5-6, NIV).
Friend to Friend
Someone once said that if God showed us every detail of our lives - all at
one time - we would sit down and refuse to face another day. We were not
created to be omniscient like God. He reveals our future to us in portions
we can digest - like loving parents feeding their child only the type and
amount of food that the child can handle.
Watching our daughter introduce solid foods to our six-month-old grandson
was an intriguing process to watch. I'm not sure if it was the texture or
taste that surprised Justus, but the faces he made when that new food was
first placed in his little mouth were hilarious. When he liked the new
food, his eyes got big and he grinned and made a big smacking sound as if
to say, "Where have you been keeping this stuff?" However, a few foods
elicited a very different reaction. He scrunched up his face, turned his
head and promptly spat out the offending food. Danna quickly learned the
art of mixing foods in a single bite and also learned the same food Justus
refused to eat on Thursday was often consumed the next time she tried. God
only reveals what we can understand, perceive, apply and digest at the time.
Attainable. Proverbs 16:3 "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your
plans will succeed."
If you have seen the movie, "Miss Congeniality," you will remember when
each contestant was asked about life goals. "I want to achieve world peace"
was the popular answer. World peace is a great goal but not attainable by
one person. Perhaps a better individual goal would be to make peace with
your neighbor. I sometimes think we set life goals that are lofty and
unattainable because then we really can't do anything to reach that goal.
Reaching a life goal requires action. We are called by God to not only hear
His Word but then to put it into practice - to do something about it
through setting goals.
A goal should not be set to authenticate what you have already been doing
or want to do. God created us to mature, to grow and change, not to stand
on the sidelines of life. God wants us in the game and on the field of
life. Godly goals will push us beyond where we are and what we are capable
of. If no effort is required to reach the desired outcome, then it really
isn't a goal. When I was in college, I sensed God leading me to take organ
lessons. I had played the piano for years but, for some reason, suddenly
wanted to play the organ as well. After a few months of lessons, I was
asked to play the organ for a countywide crusade to be held at the
convention center of the small town where I grew up. Hundreds of people
would attend the crusade, and the guest speakers were well-known across the
state. I was terrified but began to practice the organ every spare minute
of every day. By the time the crusade came, I was able to play each song
that was handed to me. It was definitely "a God-thing."
Sidebar: Ask a trusted friend to hold you accountable in each area where
you want to improve, grow, or achieve. This should be a same-sexed friend
from whom you can easily take criticism and who will feel comfortably
pushing you a little when you aren't following through on your goals. When
we involve others, we tend to feel a greater sense of responsibility and
accountability. Run your plans and goals past other people. You don't want
to do this with every goal and at every step along the way, but you should
with big and important plans, especially if they impact other people.
Realistic. Hebrews 11:6 "And it is impossible to please God without faith.
Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he
rewards those who sincerely seek him."
It is easy to establish a goal that is totally unrealistic. In doing so, we
are setting ourselves up to fail. I once set a goal to read and memorize at
least two chapters of the Bible each week. Yes, it was a great goal but
unrealistic for that season of my life. I had two small children and was
directing the women's ministry of the church where my husband was the lead
pastor, teaching a community Bible study, teaching 20 voice and piano
students each week and had begun traveling and speaking for women's events.
When I did not reach that goal, I beat myself up with guilt and God was not
honored. A more realistic goal would have been to memorize a few verses
each week.
At this point, it is good to brutally examine motives. Are the goals we are
setting from God or from our own selfish desires? Do I want my relationship
with God to grow or do I want others to think I am Godly? Consciously
decide in light of Scripture which goals you will prioritize, or you will
most likely end up surrendering to the "tyranny of the urgent" or just
doing the next and easiest thing.
Timely. Ephesians 5:15-16"Be very careful, then, how you live, not as
unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days
are evil."
I have to have deadlines to achieve goals. When someone books me to speak
for an event, I always ask them to give me a deadline for submitting
handouts and slides, shipping resources, etc. I then record those deadlines
on my personal calendar. If I don't, I often find myself scrambling to get
books shipped in time for the event and end up paying extra postage or have
to download slides onto a memory stick to take with me to the event. If you
give yourself a deadline, you will get more done.
Write out a list of things that would need to change in your life in order
for your goals to come true. Sometimes the only reason we don't accomplish
our goals is that we don't have a written plan of what needs to be done.
Without having the ability to review the goals regularly, we tend to lose
our focus. Before we know it, a month or two has gone by, there is no
progress, and we are frustrated that we are no closer to the realization of
our goals.
Pray! Ask God to give you direction to create goals and help you to reach
them. He has plans and purposes for our lives. Success and purpose come
when we find out what they are and go after them wholeheartedly. Surround
your goals and plans with prayer and ask the Lord to bless you as you work
toward each one. We need to order our lives in a more conscious way. Set
forward-focused, spiritually sound goals, and be delivered from the
futility of a life with no purpose.

Let's Pray
Father, I want to follow Your plan for my life. Please lead me and guide me
in Your ways. Give me Your wisdom and truth and show me the purpose for
which I was created. I will seek You first in my life. I will trust You
with my whole heart and do whatever You ask me to do.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

~STANDING IN JESUS~

We must stand for Jesus and be true to him each day
If we don't stand for truth...we will fall along life's way.
His ways are right and lead us to our eternal home,
We shall one day meet the Savior, nevermore to roam.

The Lord who walks beside us will guide us in paths of right,
We have a God who cares each day and watches us all through the night.
We can be secure if we stand on the Solid Rock in Him,
He is our Savior and is also our dearest Friend.

We must stand strong for Jesus and have faith in our Lord
One day we shall receive our heavenly reward,
We must press on each day as His Spirit leads the way,
We will be secure in His grip of grace if in God's will we stay.

Blessings in Christ,

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I
will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right
hand. --Isaiah 41:10
Snowflakes are fascinating.. They come in all different shapes and sizes.
Some appear as delicate lace doilies others as shining stars. Yet they all
have their similarities. Each snowflake has six points, is made up of
molecules of hydrogen and oxygen, and is symmetrical in shape.
But did you know that the ice that makes a snowflake collects around a
particle of dust floating in the atmosphere? The tiny imperfection may be
as small as 1/100,000 of a millimeter in size, but it has to exist for a
snowflake to form!
In the same way, imperfections in life can often be the catalysts that
cause something wonderful and beautiful to happen. A "foreign invader" that
crashes into our lives—such as a terminal illness, an accident, or a
heartbreak—can actually turn into a source of blessing.
As it says in Ecclesiastes 3:11, "He has made everything beautiful in its
time."
When you encounter obstacles in life, remember that they give you, as a
believer, the chance to let God make something wonderful happen. If you are
struggling with a difficult situation in your life, seek the Lord and wait
for Him to create from it a beautiful blessing. Because I promise…if you're
looking for it…He will!

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Thank God that when hardships come, He makes something
beautiful as a result! Pray that He would continue to transform your trials
into blessings by surrounding you with His grace, love, and mercy.

light for the fruit of the light consists in
all goodness, righteousness and truth.
( Ephesians 5:8-9 *NIV )

As Children of Light our actions should reflect our faith, and
shine brightly to others. We should never be afraid to show our faith
no matter where we are, or who we are with. After all we are beacons
of God's Love shining out into dark World that is searching for love
in all the wrong places. A World that is full of people without love,
hope and faith.

Therefore our Savior Jesus Christ stressed this truth in the
Sermon on the Mount, for He said; "You are the light of the
world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither
do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.
Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light
to everyone in the house.
( Matthew 5:14-15 )

Further you probably have known people that
seem to light up a room when they enter, well, In the same way, let
your light shine before men, that they may see
your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
( Matthew 5:16 )

Now you may be thinking "my light is a dim one." Well, I believe
that our dim light is magnified by the immense mirror of God's Love.
Thus it truly shines brightly when we tell others about our Heavenly
Father, and show goodness toward the people in our lives! So try it
today and see for yourself, for if everyone would light just one
little candle what a bright World this would be! Amen

All My Love & Prayers,
Pastor Allen

Coffee Break

"Hidden Lights"

"Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot
be hid." Matthew 5:14

"Ye are the light of the world." How do we become lights? We are
born into darkness and are darkness. "For ye were sometimes
darkness:" (Ephesians 5:8a) Darkness cannot change itself into
something that it is not, or into something that it is diametrically
opposed to.

The way we become light is through Jesus, He is the Light. We become
light when we become born again, when we surrender our lives to Him,
when He comes and lives within us. Then it is His light that shines
through us. This light is Jesus-- without Him we have no light.

Lights have one purpose-- to shine. When they are hidden, they are
not shining. "Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a
bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in
the house." (verse 15) Our lights were never meant to be hidden. If
Jesus is the Light that is in us- because we have no light of our own-
then He is meant to "shine" through us, not be hidden.

Is Jesus hidden in your life? Or is He shining? How can He be
hidden? He is hidden when we exhibit something through our lives that
He is not. He is love. When we have hate and malice toward someone,
He is hidden. When we are living in immorality, He is hidden. When
we don't show forgiveness but rather hold a grudge, He is hidden.
When we are bitter, mean tempered, rude, unkind, covetous, greedy,
condemning, arrogant, proud, boastful, abusive and lustful, He is
hidden.

On the other hand, He is shining through us and not hidden when we are
kind, tenderhearted, loving, forgiving, compassionate, giving, self-
denying, content, meek, humble, gracious, faithful, temperate and
walking in peace and joy.

So, examine yourself and see if what you are doing and the type of
life you are living is allowing Jesus to shine through you or is it
hiding Him.

Have a great day. Lights have one purpose- to shine. Are you?

January 5
Psalm 2:11
Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
The fire licked up the outside walls and cascaded up into the night.
All around the building, fire fighters scampered, trundling huge hoses
into position to battle the blaze. Jerry stood with sweat pouring down
his face and the spray from the hose soaking his body. He loved his
work and felt he really served well. He knew the dangers that were
involved, but he fought fires anyway. His job was one of the greatest
joys of his life.

Not all things that inspire fear should be avoided. A wise person
knows his limits and knows what situations he can handle and what ones
he cannot. A little fear is healthy. It gives us respect and
appreciation. It causes us to not get careless. Fear of the Lord
should not drive us from Him, but should help us to understand Him and
deal with Him reverently and respectfully. When we encounter our Lord
with both joy and trembling, we know Him in a special and meaningful
way.

Prayer: Lord, help me to never forget Your awesome power, as well as
Your awesome love. Allow me to feel a healthy fear, but never let that
fear separate me from You. Amen

St Faustina

Reading from St. Faustina's diary

O my Jesus, in terrible bitterness and pain,
I yet feel the caress of Your Divine Heart.
Like a good mother, You press me to Your bosom,
And even now You give me to experience what the veil hides.

O my Jesus, in this wilderness and terror which
surround me,
My heart still feels the warmth of Your gaze,
Which no storm can blot out from me,
As You give me the assurance of Your great love, O God.

O my Jesus, midst the great miseries of this life,
You shine like a star, O Jesus, protecting me from shipwreck.
And though my miseries be great,
I have great trust in the power of Your mercy.

O hidden Jesus, in the many struggles of my last hour,
May the omnipotence of Your grace be poured out
upon my soul,
That at death's moment I may gaze upon You
And see You face to face, as do the chosen in heaven.

O my Jesus, midst the dangers which surround me,
I go through life with a cry of joy, my head raised proudly,
Because against Your Heart so filled with love, O Jesus,
All enemies will be crushed, all darkness dispelled. (1479)

Job 1:11-12
"But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will
surely curse You to Your face!" So the Lord said to Satan, "Behold,
all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand on his
person." So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.
Lion on a Leash
Many cities and even small towns have leash laws. You can't simply let
your pets run loose; they must be kept on a leash. The logic is
obvious. With no constraints, dogs and cats not only do unsightly
things on people's yards, but they damage shrubs and flowers, dig
holes in unwanted places or make a nuisance of themselves in other
ways.
God also has a leash law, and the primary target of that law is Satan.
The Devil is a powerful enemy and can cause you a great deal of
damage. The apostle Peter compared him to a lion (1 Pet. 5:8). Yet the
life of Job demonstrates that the Devil can only go as far as God's
leash allows him. With God's permission, Satan could afflict God's
servant only to a certain extent and no further. Even though tragic
events took place, God's hand was always on the leash preventing Satan
from destroying Job.
Sometimes when we look at our difficult situations, we become fearful.
Our imagination provides fertile soil for us to grow all kinds of
potential problems and disasters. We fear the worst and are sure that
we will be overwhelmed. Yet God never removes His hand from our
enemy's leash. While we may experience difficult people and hard
times, Satan cannot attack us beyond the limit that God allows.
Trust your Heavenly Father's wisdom. Nobody knows better than He does
how far to play out the leash. While Satan may appear as a fearsome
lion, he can do no more in your life than what God allows him. On that
you can rely.
You can't trust the lion, but you can trust God's leash.

Believing Prayer

"Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man
believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way"
(John 4:50).
"When ye pray, believe" (Mark 11:24).
When there is a matter that requires definite prayer, pray till you
believe God, until with unfeigned lips you can thank Him for the
answer. If the answer still tarries outwardly, do not pray for it in
such a way that it is evident that you are not definitely believing
for it. Such a prayer in place of being a help will be a hindrance;
and when you are finished praying, you will find that your faith has
weakened or has entirely gone. The urgency that you felt to offer this
kind of prayer is clearly from self and Satan. It may not be wrong to
mention the matter in question to the Lord again, if He is keeping you
waiting, but be sure you do so in such a way that it implies faith. Do
not pray yourself out of faith. You may tell Him that you are waiting
and that you are still believing Him and therefore praise Him for the
answer. There is nothing that so fully clinches faith as to be so sure
of the answer that you can thank God for it. Prayers that pray us
out of faith deny both God's promise in His Word and also His whisper
"Yes," that He gave us in our hearts. Such prayers are but the
expression of the unrest of one's heart, and unrest implies unbelief
in reference to the answer to prayer. "For we which have believed do
enter into rest" (Heb. 4:3). This prayer that prays ourselves out of
faith frequently arises from centering our thoughts on the difficulty
rather than on God's promise. Abraham "considered not his own body,"
"he staggered not at the promise of God" (Rom. 4:19, 20). May we watch
and pray that we enter not into temptation of praying ourselves out of
faith. --C. H. P.
Faith is not a sense, nor sight, nor reason, but a taking God at His
Word. --Evans
The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith, and the beginning of
true faith is the end of anxiety. --George Mueller
You will never learn faith in comfortable surroundings. God gives us
the promises in a quiet hour; God seals our covenants with great and
gracious words, then He steps back and waits to see how much we
believe; then He lets the tempter come, and the test seems to
contradict all that He has spoken. It is then that faith wins its
crown. That is the time to look up through the storm, and among the
trembling, frightened seamen cry, "I believe God that it shall be even
as it was told me."
"Believe and trust; through stars and suns,
Through life and death, through soul and sense,
His wise, paternal purpose runs;
The darkness of His Providence
Is starlit with Divine intents."

The Divine Shepherd Hears His Sheep

He will be very gracious unto thee at the voice of thy cry; when He
shall hear it, He will answer thee.
ISAIAH 30:19
THAT Was the Shepherd of the flock; He knew
The distant voice of one poor sheep astray;
It had forsaken Him, but He was true,
And listened for its bleating night and day.
And thou, fallen soul, afraid to live or die
In the deep pit that will not set thee free,
Lift up to Him the helpless homeward cry,
For all that tender love is seeking thee.
ANNA L. WARING
OUR Divine Shepherd followed after His lost sheep for three and thirty
years, in a way so painful and so thorny that He spilt His heart's
blood and left His life there. The poor sheep now follows Him through
obedience to His commands, or through a desire (though at times but
faint) to obey Him, calling upon Him and beseeching Him earnestly for
help; is it possible that He should now refuse to turn upon it His
life-giving look? Will He not give ear to it, and lay it upon His
divine shoulders, rejoicing over it with all His friends and with the
angels of Heaven? For if our Lord ceased not to search most diligently
and lovingly for the blind and deaf sinner, the lost drachma of the
Gospel, till He found it, how is it possible that He should abandon
him who, as a lost sheep, cries and calls upon his Shepherd?

Rewards for Obedience
1 Corinthians 3:10-15
A call to be a missionary is much like Abraham's call. It is necessary
to leave home, possessions, relatives, worldly ambitions and to go to
another country to which God has led.
But one can never out-give God. Though Abraham was called to give up
much, he was promised much more. God always promises blessings when we
obey and follow Him.
Hebrews 13:5 says, "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and
be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never
leave thee, nor forsake thee."
Much the same thing was said to the people of Israel: "Be strong and
of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy
God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor
forsake thee" (Deut. 31:6).
The psalmist said, "Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou
dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed" (Ps. 37.3).
God promised to bless Israel, and He promises to bless us when we
trust and obey. God's call for us today is that we might be separated
unto Him.
"No good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly" (Ps. 84:11).

The Lord's Battle

And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness
of Tekoa, and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me,
O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your
God, so shall ye be established; believe His prophets, so shall ye
prosper.
The battle of the forces of good against the forces of evil has raged
on for millennia. Ever since Satan's heart was lifted up with pride
and he said, "I will be like the most high" (Isaiah 14:13-14), the
forces of God have been pitted against Satan and his forces in eternal
conflict. This battle continues today. The apostle Paul reminds us
that "we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of darkness of this
world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12).
One of the greatest difficulties in being a soldier in the army of the
Lord is to recognize that we are but soldiers on the field of battle
and not generals in the war room. We are called upon to fight Satan
and his henchmen. We are engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the
forces of immorality, ungodliness and sin. Still, the battle is the
Lord's, not ours. Nowhere is this truth more graphically illustrated
than in the story of good King Jehoshaphat.
The quarter-century reign of Jehoshaphat, son of Asa, is one of the
rare bright spots in Judah's checkered history. He was 35 years old
when he ascended to the throne in 872 B.C. and he continued the work
of religious reformation and revival begun by his father. But as is
usually the case when a man attempts to serve God, the forces of Satan
began to disrupt Judah during the days of Jehoshaphat. As 2 Chronicles
20:1 indicates, the peace of Judah was suddenly interrupted by a
confederacy of the Moabites and Ammonites east of the Jordan River.
The combined forces of this deadly duo were but a manifestation of the
armies of Satan during that generation. What would the king of God's
people do? Would he fight or would he knuckle under to Satan's
stooges? Jehoshaphat did the only thing a godly person can do. He "set
himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah."
When Jehoshaphat finished his prayer, Jahaziel, the son of Zechariah,
who was in the line of Levites from Asaph, began to prophesy by the
spirit of the Lord. He called to Judah and the inhabitants of
Jerusalem and gave this message to the king and the people: "Thus
saith the LORD unto you, be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this
great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's."
Reassured by this word from the Lord, the king and people bowed their
faces to the ground and worshiped Jehovah the Lord. Then they stood to
praise the Lord God of Israel with a loud voice. And, oh yes, they did
one other thing: they put feet to their prayers. "And they rose early
in the morning and went forth into the wilderness at Tekoa and as they
went forth Jehoshaphat stood and said, hear me, O Judah, and ye
inhabitants of Jerusalem; believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be
established; believe His prophets, so shall ye prosper" (2 Chronicles
20:20). Having prayed to God and armed with the knowledge that the
battle was not theirs but His, the Jews arose early the next morning,
eager to be soldiers in God's army. When they arrived at the scene of
battle, they found no mighty armies, just dead bodies. Apparently the
confused enemy fell on one another. Ammonites killing Moabites and
Moabites killing Ammonites. Indeed, the battle was the Lord's.
This is a hard lesson to learn when the battle does not appear to be
going God's way. Perhaps that's why so many soldiers today are
discouraged and ready to desert the army of the Lord. But you and I
must remember that we are taking our place in the Lord's army, just as
Jehoshaphat and the Jews took their places so many centuries ago. The
battle still rages; the battle is still the Lord's. Let us pray to the
Lord God for victory, praise His name for assurance, and then rush off
early each morning to do battle with Satan and his armies throughout
the day. We have the same confidence as did Jehoshaphat and the Jews,
for we have the same God.
MORNING HYMN
Fierce may be the conflict,
Strong may be the foe,
But the King's own army,
None can overthrow;
Round His standard ranging,
Vict'ry is secure,
For His truth unchanging
Makes the triumph sure.
Joyfully enlisting,
By Thy grace divine,
We are on the Lord's side,
Saviour, we are Thine!

Good Passage
Thurs., Jan. 05, 2012

Ps 77:11 I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will
remember Your wonders of old. (NKJ)

Ps 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will
remember the name of the LORD our God. (NKJ)

As we start this new Year, we remember the many ways God has helped us
in our lives. We remember the miracles God worked for people in the
Bible. We remember that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ is just as
powerful today as it was in the Bible.

May God's blessings be yours as you live for Him,

Reinhard
