Two Men - Different Reactions
For reading & meditation - 2 Corinthians 12:1-10
""... 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.'"" (v. 9)

We must spend another day examining this very important issue of why
it is that some non-Christians seem to respond better to life's
problems than many Christians. Just recently I heard of two different
people whose business ventures collapsed. One was a Christian and the
other an agnostic. The agnostic responded to the situation by saying,
""I cannot determine what happens to me, but I can determine what it
will do to me. It will make me better and more useful."" He struck out
in another direction, and his new venture prospered to such a degree
that he won an award. The Christian responded to the collapse of his
business by saying, ""Life is unjust. What's the point of trying? I
shall withdraw from the cutthroat world of business and concentrate on
my garden."" He had to undergo some in-depth counseling before he was
on his feet again, and after six months he felt strong enough to
rebuild a new and now prosperous business. What can explain the
different
reactions of these two men? We could explain it in terms of
temperament, upbringing, and so on, but there is one thing that must
not be overlooked - the Christian had access to the grace of God
which, if utilized, should have enabled him to view the situation even
more positively than the non-Christian. As a counselor, I understand
why people respond wrongly to life's situations. However, my
understanding of it does not prevent me from recognizing that the true
biblical response to life's problems is to take full advantage of the
grace of God and turn every setback into a springboard.
Prayer:
Gracious Father, help me to respond to everything in the way a
Christian should. Help me to see that not only do You lift the
standard high, but You also supply the strength for me to attain it.
For Jesus' sake. Amen.

Morning

They shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

O LORD our God, [other] lords beside thee have had dominion over us: [but]
by thee only will we make mention of thy name.-- We are [thine]: thou never
barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.

All people of the earth shall see that thou art called by the name of the
LORD; and they shall be afraid of thee.--The LORD will not forsake his
people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make
you his people.

O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine
own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy
name.--Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and
deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake. Wherefore should
the heathen say, Where [is] their God?

The name of the LORD [is] a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and
is safe.

Evening

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his
handywork.

The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen,
being understood by the things that are made, [even] his eternal power and
Godhead.--He left not himself without witness.--Day unto day uttereth
speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge. [There is] no speech nor
language, [where] their voice is not heard.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the
stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him?
and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

[There is] one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another
glory of the stars: for [one] star differeth from [another] star in glory.
So also [is] the resurrection of the dead.--They that be wise shall shine as
the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as
the stars for ever and ever.

Morning

"The Lord looketh from heaven; He beholdeth all the sons of men."-Psalm
33:13

Perhaps no figure of speech represents God in a more gracious light than
when He is spoken of as stooping from His throne, and coming down from
heaven to attend to the wants and to behold the woes of mankind. We love
Him, who, when Sodom and Gomorrah were full of iniquity, would not destroy
those cities until He had made a personal visitation of them. We cannot help
pouring out our heart in affection for our Lord who inclines His ear from
the highest glory, and puts it to the lip of the dying sinner, whose failing
heart longs after reconciliation. How can we but love Him when we know that
He numbers the very hairs of our heads, marks our path, and orders our ways?
Specially is this great truth brought near to our heart, when we recollect
how attentive He is, not merely to the temporal interests of His creatures,
but to their spiritual concerns. Though leagues of distance lie between the
finite creature and the infinite Creator, yet there are links uniting both.
When a tear i!
s wept by thee, think not that God doth not behold; for, "Like as a father
pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him." Thy sigh is
able to move the heart of Jehovah; thy whisper can incline His ear unto
thee; thy prayer can stay His hand; thy faith can move His arm. Think not
that God sits on high taking no account of thee. Remember that however poor
and needy thou art, yet the Lord thinketh upon thee. For the eyes of the
Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in
the behalf of them whose heart is perfect towards Him.

Oh! then repeat the truth that never tires;
No God is like the God my soul desires;
He at whose voice heaven trembles, even He,
Great as He is, knows how to stoop to me.

Evening

"Go again seven times."-1 Kings 18:43
Success is certain when the Lord has promised it. Although you may have
pleaded month after month without evidence of answer, it is not possible
that the Lord should be deaf when His people are earnest in a matter which
concerns His glory. The prophet on the top of Carmel continued to wrestle
with God, and never for a moment gave way to a fear that he should be
non-suited in Jehovah's courts. Six times the servant returned, but on each
occasion no word was spoken but "Go again." We must not dream of unbelief,
but hold to our faith even to seventy times seven. Faith sends expectant
hope to look from Carmel's brow, and if nothing is beheld, she sends again
and again. So far from being crushed by repeated disappointment, faith is
animated to plead more fervently with her God. She is humbled, but not
abashed: her groans are deeper, and her sighings more vehement, but she
never relaxes her hold or stays her hand. It would be more agreeable to
flesh and blood to have a speedy answ!
er, but believing souls have learned to be submissive, and to find it good
to wait for as well as upon the Lord. Delayed answers often set the heart
searching itself, and so lead to contrition and spiritual reformation:
deadly blows are thus struck at our corruption, and the chambers of imagery
are cleansed. The great danger is lest men should faint, and miss the
blessing. Reader, do not fall into that sin, but continue in prayer and
watching. At last the little cloud was seen, the sure forerunner of torrents
of rain, and even so with you, the token for good shall surely be given, and
you shall rise as a prevailing prince to enjoy the mercy you have sought.
Elijah was a man of like passions with us: his power with God did not lie in
his own merits. If his believing prayer availed so much, why not yours?
Plead the precious blood with unceasing importunity, and it shall be with
you according to your desire.

How to carry your cross daily
September 29, 2011
"If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his
cross daily and follow me."
Luke 9:23
I want to ask you a very serious question today: Are you willing to
die in faith if necessary? What I mean is this: Is your commitment to
what you believe strong enough that you would give your life for it?
I'm asking this because if you're commitment is strong enough to die
in faith, then your commitment is strong enough to live in faith!
I love Vince Havner's famous quote about American Christianity, "The
trouble with Christians is that nobody wants to kill us anymore!" And
it's true that many have become so content that they've just gathered
in holy huddles in church sanctuaries rather than taking a stand for
Christ.
And on school campuses, in our neighborhoods, in business
organizations, and in the government, many Christians are increasingly
reducing their commitment to the lowest common denominator. They're
playing it safe because they're scared of being marginalized!
But our Christ has called us to a cross. He's called us to pick up our
cross daily and follow Him. And it's that commitment of the cross—to
live or to die—that would advance God's Kingdom. So examine yourself
and your commitment to the cross because through you, God's light can
shine in the world's darkest corners!

HAVING A FAITH WORTH LIVING FOR IS ONLY POSSIBLE WHEN YOU'RE WILLING
TO DIE FOR IT AS WELL. SO COMMIT FULLY TO CARRYING YOUR CROSS DAILY
AND ALLOW GOD'S LIGHT TO SHINE THROUGH YOU!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

Faith's Check Book, Daily Entry
C. H. Spurgeon

September 29
To Glorify Christ Jesus

He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it
unto you. (John 16:14)
The Holy Ghost Himself cannot better glorify the Lord Jesus than by
showing to us Christ's own things. Jesus is His own best commendation.
There is no adorning Him except with his own gold.
The Comforter shows us that which He has received of our Lord Jesus.
We never see anything aright till He reveals it. He has a way of
opening our minds and of opening the Scriptures, and by this double
process He sets forth our Lord to us. There is much art in setting
forth a matter, and that art belongs in the highest degree to the
Spirit of truth. He shows us the things themselves. This is a great
privilege, as those know who have enjoyed the hallowed vision.
Let us seek the illumination of the Spirit; not to gratify our
curiosity, nor even to bring us personal comfort, so much as to
glorify the Lord Jesus. Oh, to have worthy ideas of Him! Groveling
notions dishonor our precious Lord. Oh, to have such vivid impressions
of His person, and work, and glory that we may with heart and soul cry
out to His praise! Where there is a heart enriched by the Holy Ghost's
teaching there will be a Savior glorified beyond expression. Come,
Holy Spirit, heavenly light, and show us Jesus our Lord!

As the body without the spirit is dead,
so faith without deeds is dead.

DAILY-E-VOTIONAL
BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART
Pastor Cecil A. Thompson
September 29, 2011

GOD'S WORD!
I John 2:3-6
We know that we have come to know Him if we obey His commands. The man
who says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar,
and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys His word, God's love
is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him:
Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.

There are far too many phony people in the world who claim to be born
again believers. I won't call them phony Christians, because you
either are a born again Christian or not one at all. Like my dad used
to say; "If it don't quack like a duck and don't waddle like a duck,
it ain't a duck!" (Grammar was not his strong point).

Today's Scripture mentions the necessity of following God's commands
and walking in the same way Jesus walked. How do we know what His
commands are and how do we know how He walked? The only way is by
spending time reading the precious word of God.

I fear that many Christians have fallen into the trap of letting
others formatting our view of what it means to walk with God. The
danger of only listening to what others say about the word of God is
that they may be slanting the interpretation to support their own
view.

Here is my honest conviction about how we should conduct ourselves.
Set aside quality time to read a substantial portion of the Bible.
Have a notebook close at hand to write down insights the Holy Spirit
will bring to your mind. Always read with a questioning mind: What
does it say? What does it mean? How do I apply it to my own life? Try
it! It is God's will for us to know His plan for our life.

Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely
and be a blessing!

God Himself
"Do not be afraid, the LORD your God himself will fight for you." Deut. 3:22

Joshua and Caleb had given Israel a good report about the land of
Canaan, but because of the Israelites' stubbornness, they were forced
to wander in the wilderness for 40 years until all those who had
rebelled against the Lord died. They would never see the Promised
Land. Now the Israelites were at the "door" to the land of Canaan once
again. God commanded them to go forth into the land and take
possession of it with Joshua as their commander. When Moses hesitated,
the Lord reassured him that He would do the fighting for Israel just
as He had in days gone by. How many times had Israel been a witness to
the Lord's power and yet they allowed their fears to dictate their
actions? Will you stand by and let fear deprive you of all that the
Lord has promised you? Will you, like the Israelites, miss out on
Canaan and wander in the wilderness for years because your fears are
stronger than your trust in God and His promises? Or will you take Him
at his word and
go forth without fear knowing that what He has promised He will do?
"The LORD your God himself will fight for you!" He has said it, do you
believe it? With a promise like that, there should be no stopping us
from attaining all that He has promised us! Will you live in the
wilderness or will you live in the Promised Land, it is up to you! If
God be for us who can stand against us? [Romans 8:31] He is more
powerful than any foe that we may come up against. Satan surely holds
no power over the God of the Universe! So, let us go forth in faith
knowing that the victory will be ours because our LORD will fight for
us!
Father, thank you for this promise. You will fight for us! Help us to
remember we do not need to depend upon our own strength or resources,
we only need to look to you and depend upon you to see us through.
Take our fears and replace them with a faith that will not be shaken.
Thank you for fighting the battle for us. Take us into the Promised
Land and give us the victory! Amen

Nothing in Between"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes
to the Father except through Me." John 14:6, NKJV

Jesus leaves us with two options. Accept him as God or reject him as a
megalomaniac. There is no third alternative . . .
Call him crazy or crown him as king. Dismiss him as a fraud or declare
him to be God. Walk away from him or bow before him, but don't play
games with him. Don't call him a great man. Don't list him among
decent folk . . . He is either God or godless. Heaven sent or hell
born. All hope or all hype. But nothing in between.

September 29

John 16:33
'These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have
overcome the world.'

Leo wanted to remember how tough it was. He'd lost the weight, but he
never wanted to get back into the poor shape he'd recently been in. It
would be way too easy to fall back into bad habits, thinking that the
battle was won once for all time. It was nice to have succeeded. But
Leo planned to make sure his success lasted a good, long time. It is
nice to overcome obesity, but it is an ongoing battle. We should ally
ourselves with the one true conqueror: Jesus Christ. With Christ's
help, we can continue to triumph over our weight problems. He grants
not only peace, but power to overcome any obstacle.

Today's thought: If we empty our plate, we won't lose our weight!

Psalm 119:51
The proud have had me greatly in derision: yet I have not declined from thy law.

Umpiring had its good points and its bad points. Being a part of the
game of baseball had always been exciting to Harry, but sometimes it
wasn't worth all the abuse. Harry always gave his best effort to be
fair to everyone. Still, there was no pleasing some people. All he
knew was that he was going to go by the rules, and if others didn't
like it, that was their tough luck. At least Harry could sleep well at
night knowing that he never compromised the game due to pressure. He
might make an occasional bad call, but every call he made was done
with integrity.

Sometimes standing for what is right is the hardest thing we can do.
Others will mock us for doing things by the book, but that should only
confirm that we are on the right track. God rejoices when we do what
we know is right, and He will strengthen us so we can rise above the
derision.

Prayer: I find that I am too weak to stand up for what is right all
the time. When I am weakest, Lord, fill me with your divine strength.
Do not let me shrink from doing what I know is right. Amen.

Psalm 72:12-14 - For he will deliver the needy who cry out, the

Wimpy Death

Latest Blog from Ron Hutchcraft
"If people who don't know Jesus want to know the difference Jesus
makes, let them come to our funerals."
A friend told me that years ago. I thought of it again this week as I
joined one of our dear friends in mourning the loss of his precious
wife. They've poured out their lives for others in one of this world's
very troubled places. Because of the violence around them, one of
their little daughter's first words was "rocket." But a year ago the
bomb that changed everything was one word in a doctor's office -
"cancer."

Faucet Fascination - #6449
Thursday, September 29, 2011

I'll bet you turned on the water this morning and never gave it a
thought. Well, you probably didn't grow up in the middle of a desert.
You know, speaking of deserts, there was a great story years ago about
the legendary Lawrence of Arabia. There was a movie made about his
life. He had made many friends there in his campaigns and they had
grown up in the desert, and they did not take running water for
granted.
Well, he actually took a few of those men with him to Paris, and they
stayed in a really nice hotel. And since these guys had grown up in
the desert, they were amazed by this running water in their hotel
room. Wow! What an event! And on the day they were packing to go home,
Lawrence found them trying to remove the bathroom faucets and put them
in their suitcases to take them home with them. They wanted those
things back in the desert with them. At which point Lawrence explained
to them that the water doesn't come from the faucet, it comes from a
reservoir up in the mountains. See, they thought the water came from
what the water came through.
I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about
"Faucet Fascination."
Now, our word for today from the Word of God comes from Deuteronomy 8,
and God says in verse 2, "Remember how the Lord your God led you all
the way in the desert." Speaking of deserts...and then He says, "He
humbled you, causing you to hunger..." That's kind of curious.
"...causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, which
neither you nor your fathers had known, to teach you that man does not
live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of
the Lord."
Okay, God is the reservoir. Everything we need originates from Him:
the money, the friends, the transportation, the love, the spiritual
support. And He sends it through earthly faucets. In this case, where
He's talking about satisfying a physical need for food, He's referring
to bread. And God is teaching you that bread isn't the only way to
meet your need.
Now, we have a lot of earthly faucets that God's supply comes through:
pay checks, special people, pastors, systems, people we've always
looked to. And God can deliver a thousand different ways. We suffer
from faucet fascination. We start to put our faith in the means, and
then suddenly our faucet is gone: people move, people die, people let
you down, jobs and companies change, things break down, things
disappear. No problem! The water never came from the faucet anyway.
God has two means of upgrading our trust from the faucet to our
Father. First it says here He causes you to hunger. He allows the
systems to fail sometimes. Maybe you're anxious right now because you
have a need with no obvious supply to meet it--no bread so to speak,
like the ancient Jews. Well, we don't learn that God is our security
until our usual supply dries up. Maybe that's where you are right now.
Step two: God feeds you with something like the Bible says here,
"...that neither you nor your fathers had known." He comes up with
this surprisingly inventive substitute for the system you have been
relying on; a new unimagined means of meeting your need. And it comes
in a surprising form from a surprising place. And you say, "God, it's
you that it all comes from isn't it?" And you step up to a wonderful
new security, one that can peacefully accept the loss of any faucet in
your life. Because it was only a means that God came through.
God's your reservoir and He never dries up. So, quit trying to put
those faucets in your suitcase.

September 29, 2011 *[image: Daily Devotional]* *More than performance
**My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.
Proverbs 23:26, HCSB*

Many Christians live on the surface of life and rarely, if ever, look below
the waterline. They do have inner longings sometimes to climb higher with
God, but their response to these feelings is to focus their attention on
what goes on above the waterline - the area of performance and behavior. So
they try harder in terms of more Bible reading, more prayer, more giving,
more Christian activities.

I would be the last person to view greater obedience as unimportant, but it
is not the only, or indeed the final, answer. A great mistake made by many
Christians who recognize they are not receiving from God the things they
ought to be receiving is to think that the solution lies solely in more
spiritual effort, the assumption being that as we do more above the
waterline, the problems that lie below the waterline will all come right.

Now sometimes greater obedience and more responsible effort do have this
result. I have often found, for example, that when a man who falls out of
love with his wife chooses a change in behavior and deliberately sets out to
do loving things for her, the loving behavior can trigger loving feelings.

There is more to spiritual change, however, than a change on the surface. It
can begin there, but it is not complete until the focus moves from the
surface down into the depths. Those who remain above the waterline in their
Christian living and resist the invitation to look beneath the surface will
soon become legalists - good at performing but bad at being.

*Daily Prayer*
My Father and my God, I see that if change is to take place in me, then it
must take place in all of me. Help me to see even more clearly that while
what I do is important, what I am in the depth of my being is even more
important. In Jesus'name. Amen.

Some say the polarization in our country is preventing our leaders from
taking the necessary steps to get our country back in a sound place. Debates
represent only a preview of potential future arguments. We are in a time of
little confidence. Why? We get defensive with people who challenge us. We
immediately go into debate mode or will even start swinging our fists if the
times call for it. Not Jesus. He often responds to criticism by saying,
essentially, "Oh! What? You don't like me? You're scheming behind my back?
OK then. Let me tell you a story." Go ahead and read the story assigned for
today and then come back and answer Jesus' simple question, "Who do you say
that I am?

*God we are grateful for story; our gospel story of the rejected, killed,
and resurrected Son. Amen. *

*Matthew 21:33-46* (NRSV)

33 "Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,
put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then
he leased it to tenants and went to another country.

34 "When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to
collect his produce.

35 "But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and
stoned another.

36 "Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them
in the same way.

37 "Finally he sent his son to them, saying, 'They will respect my son.'

38 "But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, 'This is the
heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.'

39 "So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.

40 "Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those
tenants?"

41 They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and
lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the
harvest time."

42 Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: 'The stone
that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's
doing, and it is amazing in our eyes'?

43 "Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and
given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.

44 "The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will
crush anyone on whom it falls."

45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they
realized that he was speaking about them.

46 They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they
regarded him as a prophet.

*His Heart on Hypocrisy*

*Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His disciples... -Matthew 23:1
(NKJV)*

*A lot of warnings are given in God's Word. But few are as intense and
comprehensive as the one Jesus gives in the twenty-third chapter of
Matthew's gospel. He goes all out in warning the multitudes and His
disciples about something that He showed no mercy towards...hypocrisy.
Citing the religious leaders of Israel as an example, Jesus delivers a
devastating denunciation against the hypocrisy that had come to characterize
and control them. Just listen to some of the language the Lord uses:*
*

Woe to you...hypocrites! For you shut up the kingdom of heaven against men;
for you neither go in yourselves, nor do you allow those who are entering to
go in. Woe to you... hypocrites! For you devour widows' houses, and for a
pretense make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
"Woe to you...hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte,
and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as
yourselves... Matthew 23:13-15 (NKJV)

Jesus left no questions on how He felt about hypocrisy. He connected it with
some of the most scathing remarks ever made. And when the Son of God gives a
warning about something like that, we'd be foolish not to heed it and adjust
our hearts accordingly.

Hypocrisy is basically the state of pretending to be one thing while
actually being another. The Greek word literally means "mask wearer," and it
describes actors who wear masks to play different roles in a performance.
God wants us to be sincere and real about the people we really are. He
doesn't want us to put on a performance in public only to be someone else
behind closed doors. Our character should be consistent in all cases and
conditions. If it isn't, we inch closer to where the piously pretentious
leaders of Jesus' day were.

None of us wants to be there, and we won't when we go before God and ask Him
to create a heart that's humble and honest in us.

THINK ABOUT IT...

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?

Good Passage
Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011

Prov 19:11 The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger, and his
glory is to overlook a transgression.
Prov 16:32 He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he
that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city. (KJV)

As Christians, we allow ourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
We walk in God's peace, joy, gentleness and self control.

We refuse anger in our lives.

God bless you richly.

REASON #39 TO USE TRACTS
A good reason to use a tract is because it…can be used in church
neighborhood outreach events, mailings, and regular church visitation.

And October is a wonderful time for every Christian to use tracts to
reach their neighborhood kids with the gospel at Halloween. Please,
PLEASE don't overlook this once-a-year opportunity with kids!
"Betrayed!" is ideal to explain salvation to boys.

For ADULTS who accompany kids, use "What If No One Warned You?" and
"If We Never Meet Again"! (click on titles to go to the LMI store).

HIDDEN RICHES IN SECRET PLACES
"I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down
gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. I will give you the
treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may
know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by your
name." Isaiah 45:2-4One of the great blessings of being a child of God
is to enter in to an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ as the
Lord of our life. Until then, we only experience His presence and
power from the perimeter of life rather than dwelling in the center
where all the action is taking place.

When we surrender our will to the lordship of Christ, we will
appropriate God's promises, and know from experiential faith the
blessing of walking in companionship with Jesus Christ. We will see
God doing things in and through our lives that can only be attributed
to God. Such is the promise before us.

"I will go before you and will level the mountains." That does not
mean that when we become Christians there will be no mountains for us
to confront. It does mean, that whatever mountains of trial and
adversity we encounter, God has promised to either give us the grace
and strength to conquer them, or He will deliver us from the encounter
by His mighty power (1 Corinthians 10:13). As a believer whose trust
is solely in God, we can rest assured that every encounter we face has
first gone through the providential care, concern, and compassion of
God.

But there's more..."He will give you the treasures of darkness, and
hidden riches of secret places." You might say, "What are these?" They
are the riches that are ours in Christ Jesus revealed only to those
whose faith rests in Him, whose heart is open and responsive to His
leading, and whose spirit is sensitive to that still small voice
saying, "this is the way, walk in it."

When we encounter the difficulties and trials of life and dare to
trust His faithful hand "in" them, He reveals to us the secret
treasures found only in the "dark places" of life. In these times we
experience the comfort of His presence, the strength of His power, and
the grace of His compassion that enables us to be "more than
conquerors through Him that loved us" (Romans 8:37). This is how we
grow in grace, become mature in our faith, and learn to lean upon His
sufficiency.

It is through these encounters we are made to "know that I am the
Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by your name." Wow! That's
incredible, inconceivable...but that's God! There is nothing beyond
the power of God, and we as His children can be the recipients of this
infinite grace!

We respond to the Holy Spirit as He begins to mold our lives to the
"image of His Son" (Romans 8:29). We begin to live in the center of
God's will and purpose for our lives where He has freedom to lead us
in the "paths of righteousness for His name's sake." Have you ever
realized that "He summons us by our name?" What a blessed revelation!

Are you a candidate for all God wants you to be? Surrender to HIM all
the cords that bind you and let the Lord be the authority of your
life. You will never be the same when HE IS LORD OF ALL! Dare to
believe and dare to trust Him without reservation.

Purpose-Driven

Isaiah 5-6, Ephesians 1
Key Verses: Ephesians 1:6a, 12b, 14b
It is not unusual to see posted in a business or printed in an
organization's literature things like a vision statement, a mission
statement or objectives. Being purpose-driven has become one of the
trends of business that has been adopted and adapted by some churches.
Even some families and individuals have decided to write
vision/mission statements.
Long before any writer or consultant suggested having a clear sense of
vision, God communicated to His church that what He was doing was
purpose-driven. Three times in Ephesians 1 we find the same basic
expression that says, "to the praise of his glory." Each time the
phrase is attached to another aspect of God's plan for our salvation,
and each time it is in regard to another person of the Trinity.
God purposed and planned our salvation to the praise of His glory. The
provision for our salvation is in the finished work of Christ, in whom
we hope that we might be "for the praise of his glory." The Holy
Spirit is given us as a pledge of our inheritance-again, "to the
praise of his glory."
Purpose-driven? Definitely. What God did in eternity past, what Jesus
did on Calvary's cross, what the Spirit does in our life, is all with
purpose. It is all intended to bring glory to God.
So let's not mess it up! Let's live in a way that brings glory to God
and in no way cause Him shame.
It is easy for us to see salvation as just for our benefit. Ask God to
help you focus your heart and life on bringing glory to Him. Do not
think only about how what He has done is for your good. It is also for
His glory.

Claim Your Inheritance

Ephesians 1:7-15
An inheritance is something that a person comes into possession of
because of his relationship with another. It is not something that is
earned; it is a gift.
The believer's inheritance includes life itself. By receiving Christ
as Saviour, the believer inherits eternal life.
Jesus said, "He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent
me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but
is passed from death unto life" (John 5:24).
The inheritance of the believer also includes everything he needs for
his life. The believer is actually a citizen of heaven who is on a
pilgrim journey on earth. However, God has made all spiritual
blessings available to the believer.
Paul told believers, "All things belong to you, and you belong to
Christ; and Christ belongs to God" (1 Cor. 3:22,23, NASB).
God's riches made available to the believer are also emphasized in
Romans 8:32: "He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for
us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?"
Our present blessings are only a small part of our spiritual
inheritance, which is to be received in full in the future.
The moment one receives Christ as Saviour he is placed as a mature son
into the family of God and becomes an heir of an inheritance that is
beyond human comprehension.
We are to let Christ reign in our lives now, but our full spiritual
inheritance includes being with Christ and reigning with Him
throughout eternity.
"To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not
away, reserved in heaven for you" (1 Pet. 1:4).

From Wanderer to Pilgrim

Read Psalm 107:1-8
One phrase is repeated four times in Psalm 107: "Oh, that men would
give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works
to the children of men!" (v. 8). The psalmist gives us five vivid
illustrations of what God has done for us and why we should praise His
name. He talks about wanderers, prisoners, hospital patients, mariners
and people seeking to build the city and sow the seed.
About wanderers the psalmist writes, "They wandered in the wilderness
in a desolate way. They found no city to dwell in. Hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted in them. Then they cried out to the Lord in their
trouble, and he delivered them out of their distresses. And He led
them forth by the right way, that they might go to a city for
habitation" (vv. 4-7). God rescued them. Then there's that refrain.
"Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for
His wonderful works to the children of men!" God has done this for
you, so thank Him.
I was a wanderer before the Lord saved me--lonely, solitary, hungry,
thirsty, aimless and wondering where to go next. Then someone told me
about Jesus Christ--that He died on the cross for my sins, was buried,
rose again on the third day and today is a living Savior for all who
will call upon Him. So I cried unto the Lord in my trouble, and He
delivered me out of my distresses. Now I'm delivered and guided and
part of His family, no longer lonely, no longer hungry and thirsty,
for Christ is the Bread of Life; He is the Living Water. I am a
pilgrim on my way to a heavenly home.

* * *
Consider God's goodness to you and the guidance He gives. He deserves
your praise. He saved you and delivered you from the penalty of your
sins. Give thanks to God for changing you from a wanderer to a
pilgrim.

Rolled Away
Joshua 5:9
Then the Lord said to Joshua, "This day I have rolled away the
reproach of Egypt from you." Therefore the name of the place is called
Gilgal to this day.
Rolled Away
According to one source, Americans spend $50 million a year on
subliminal message tapes designed to help them do everything from
improve their self-image to learn a foreign language. Unfortunately,
the National Research Council has concluded that subliminal messages
simply don't work. Despite all the hype to the contrary, these tapes
don't deliver the life-transforming changes they promise.
But there is one source who always delivers on His promises--God. As
the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, they needed to
renew their covenant with God. This relationship required that
circumcision be performed as a sign of the covenant. Those Israelites
who left Egypt had been circumcised, but those males born during the
wilderness wandering had not (vv. 4-5). It was now time for the
younger generation to take their stand and have the "reproach of
Egypt" rolled away.
Circumcision is no longer a sign of the covenant relationship with
God. When Jesus died on the cross, the outward sign of circumcision
was replaced with the inner presence of the Holy Spirit. He is the
fulfillment of the promise in Ezekiel: "I will give you a new heart
and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of
your flesh and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezek. 36:26). When the Holy
Spirit comes in, the old life is rolled away and we become "a new
creation" in Christ (2 Cor. 5:17).
This experience can be yours as well. If you are still walking in your
old life, why not receive Christ today and let Him roll your sins
away? The reproach of the past can be replaced with a hope for the
future.
Christ doesn't improve you; He transforms you.

Prepare to Meet Your God

I know that everything God does will endure forever;
nothing can be added to it and nothing taken from it. God does it so
that men will revere him. Whatever is has already been, and what will
be has been before; and God will call the past to account.
--Ecclesiastes 3:14-15

Don't be afraid of this verse. It's good news! God will
one day call your past into account, and he will no doubt see smudges
and stains, sins and faults - he will also see the blood of his Son
which will cover all (Hebrews 9:14). What else about your past? God
will see countless times of obedience and perseverance, trust and
confidence in him; he will recognize your doggedness through hardship
and your resolve against temptation - again, it will be his Son who
made the provision of grace upon grace. When God calls everything
about you into account, you will praise God for the blood and the
blessings of Jesus as never before!

You will drop to your knees before Jesus to express thanks
and gratitude. The Man of Sorrows will walk from his throne and
approach you. He will have absolutely no doubt of your appreciation,
for he knows what you have suffered, what you have endured, the
temptations to which you said "no." He will reach toward you with his
nail-scarred hands, and when you feel your hands in his, you will not
be embarrassed - that's because your own scars, and all those times
you felt rejection and pain, have given you at least a tiny taste of
what the Savior endured to purchase your redemption.

Your hardships, like nothing else, are preparing you to
meet your God. Your suffering is getting you ready - for what proof
could you bring of your love for Jesus if this life left you totally
unscarred?

Gracious God, I am full of praise for Jesus Christ. His
blood covers my sins, and his blessings of grace help me live
righteously. He deserves all the praise!

Blessings,
