Morning

I, [even] I, [am] he that comforteth you.

Blessed [be] God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our
tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble,
by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.--Like as a
father pitieth [his] children, [so] the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For
he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we [are] dust.--As one whom his
mother comforteth, so will I comfort you.--Casting all your care upon him;
for he careth for you.

Thou, O Lord, [art] a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering,
and plenteous in mercy and truth.

Another Comforter . . . [even] the Spirit of truth.--The Spirit . . .
helpeth our infirmities.

God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more
death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for
the former things are passed away.

Evening

Ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son.

He received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a
voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am
well pleased.--Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us,
that we should be called the sons of God.

Be ye . . . followers of God, as dear children.--If children, then heirs;
heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.

The brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person.--Let
your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and
glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Jesus the author and finisher of [our] faith; who for the joy that was set
before him endured the cross, despising the shame. --These things I speak in
the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.--As the
sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by
Christ.

Morning

"There were also with Him other little ships."-Mark 4:36

Jesus was the Lord High Admiral of the sea that night, and His presence
preserved the whole convoy. It is well to sail with Jesus, even though it be
in a little ship. When we sail in Christ's company, we may not make sure of
fair weather, for great storms may toss the vessel which carries the Lord
Himself, and we must not expect to find the sea less boisterous around our
little boat. If we go with Jesus we must be content to fare as He fares; and
when the waves are rough to Him, they will be rough to us. It is by tempest
and tossing that we shall come to land, as He did before us. When the storm
swept over Galilee's dark lake all faces gathered blackness, and all hearts
dreaded shipwreck.

When all creature help was useless, the slumbering Saviour arose, and with a
word, transformed the riot of the tempest into the deep quiet of a calm;
then were the little vessels at rest as well as that which carried the Lord.
Jesus is the star of the sea; and though there be sorrow upon the sea, when
Jesus is on it there is joy too. May our hearts make Jesus their anchor,
their rudder, their lighthouse, their life-boat, and their harbour. His
Church is the Admiral's flagship, let us attend her movements, and cheer her
officers with our presence. He Himself is the great attraction; let us
follow ever in His wake, mark His signals, steer by His chart, and never
fear while He is within hail. Not one ship in the convoy shall suffer wreck;
the great Commodore will steer every barque in safety to the desired haven.
By faith we will slip our cable for another day's cruise, and sail forth
with Jesus into a sea of tribulation. Winds and waves will not spare us, but
they all obey Him!
; and, therefore, whatever squalls may occur without, faith shall feel a
blessed calm within. He is ever in the centre of the weather-beaten company:
let us rejoice in Him. His vessel has reached the haven, and so shall ours.

Evening

"I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said,
I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and Thou forgavest the
iniquity of my sin."-Psalm 32:5

David's grief for sin was bitter. Its effects were visible upon his outward
frame: "his bones waxed old"; "his moisture was turned into the drought of
summer." No remedy could he find, until he made a full confession before the
throne of the heavenly grace. He tells us that for a time he kept silence,
and his heart became more and more filled with grief: like a mountain tarn
whose outlet is blocked up, his soul was swollen with torrents of sorrow. He
fashioned excuses; he endeavoured to divert his thoughts, but it was all to
no purpose; like a festering sore his anguish gathered, and as he would not
use the lancet of confession, his spirit was full of torment, and knew no
rest. At last it came to this, that he must return unto his God in humble
penitence, or die outright; so he hastened to the mercy-seat, and there
unrolled the volume of his iniquities before the all-seeing One,
acknowledging all the evil of his ways in language such as you read in the
fifty-first and other !
penitential Psalms. Having done this, a work so simple and yet so difficult
to pride, he received at once the token of divine forgiveness; the bones
which had been broken were made to rejoice, and he came forth from his
closet to sing the blessedness of the man whose transgression is forgiven.
See the value of a grace-wrought confession of sin! It is to be prized above
all price, for in every case where there is a genuine, gracious confession,
mercy is freely given, not because the repentance and confession deserve
mercy, but for Christ's sake. Blessed be God, there is always healing for
the broken heart; the fountain is ever flowing to cleanse us from our sins.
Truly, O Lord, Thou art a God "ready to pardon!" Therefore will we
acknowledge our iniquities.

Cultivating Biblical Humility

The greatest plague on earth is pride. More people miss heaven for
pride than any other sin. Wanting our own way is how God described our
pitiful condition as lost ones.

Isaiah 53: 6 "All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned,
every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity
of us all." (NKJV)

Pride was the first sin as Lucifer challenged God. Pride is the
ultimate sin.

All conflicts and troubles have flowed downward from pride. The source
of every gossip, every hurt feeling, every church division, and every
departed sheep is pride. At the heart of every fight is pride.

Only in Christ is true relief found. His mind is that of a bond
servant. His confession was—

· John 4:34 Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of
Him who sent Me, and to finish His work."

· John 5:30 "I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge;
and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but
the will of the Father who sent Me."

· John 6:38 "For I have come down from heaven, not to do My
own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. " (NKJV)

Paul was humble, 1 Thessalonians 2:6 "Nor did we seek glory from men,
either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as
apostles of Christ." (NKJV)

Paul had learned a wonderful habit. So should we!

pride is epidemic

The original sin of Adam and Eve was pride, trusting in their own
understanding above God's (Gen. 3:6–7).

§ The writer of Proverbs warns, "When pride comes, then comes
dishonor" (11:2),

§ "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before
stumbling" (16:18), and again

§ "Haughty eyes and a proud heart, the lamp of the wicked, is
sin" (21:4).

Pride is the supreme temptation from Satan, because pride is at the
heart of his own evil nature. Our only protection against pride, and
our only source of humility, is a proper view of God. Pride is the sin
of competing with God, and humility is the virtue of submitting to His
supreme glory.

FOLLOWING HIM

Matthew 16:24
If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him . . . follow Me

Seeking to overcome self by self-effort is a hopeless struggle. Self
will never cast out self, because an independent self motivated by the
flesh still wants to be God. We must follow Christ by being led by the
Holy Spirit down the path of death to self-rule. As Paul wrote: "We
who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus' sake,
that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh" (2
Corinthians 4:11).

This may sound like a dismal path to walk, but I assure you that it is
not. It is a tremendous experience to be known by the Shepherd and to
follow Him as obedient, dependent sheep (John 10:27). The fact that we
are led by the Spirit of God, even when it results in the death to
self-rule, is our assurance of sonship (Romans 8;14). We were not
designed to function independently of God. Only when we are dependent
on Him and intent on following Christ are we complete and free to
prove that the will of God is good, acceptable and perfect (Romans
12:2).

Self-rule is motivated by self-interest and supported only by self-
centered resources. When we come to the end of our resources, we
discover God's resources. God will let us do our thing and patiently
wait until self-interest and self-rule leave us spiritually and
emotionally bankrupt. We can turn to God any time we weary of trying
to run our own lives independently of Him. He doesn't force Himself on
us; He just simply says, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, let
him... follow Me." Are you willing to forsake self-rule and follow
Him?

Prayer: Loving Shepherd, I desire Your will for my life, and I purpose
today to follow You in obedience and dependence.

Full surrender

Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is
freedom. 2 Corinthians 3:17

Modern approaches to the subconscious can do no more than throw the pale
light of information into it. The message of the Bible, however, is not
merely information but transformation: "Where the Spirit of the Lord is,
there is freedom." So if the Spirit of the Lord is within us, there is
freedom from the conflict between the conscious and the subconscious.

If such a freedom is possible, why do so many live out their lives in
conflict? Because they have never appropriated the power and presence of the
Spirit available to them and channeled Him into the deeper regions of their
personality through self-surrender.

God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit will never barge their way into any area of
the personality. They come in when we put up the white flag of surrender
and, by a conscious act, agree to their residing and presiding within us.

It's surprising how many Christians say with the conscious mind, "I
surrender all," and yet with the subconscious say, "I want some areas for
myself."We must take ourselves in hand and decide whether or not we want the
Holy Spirit simply to evangelize certain areas of our personality, or
whether we want Him to occupy our entire being.

If you haven't properly settled this issue, then ask yourself today: "Am I
just kidding myself when I say I want to be filled with God? Is there a part
of me that says, 'Come in,' while another part of me says at the same time,
'Keep out'?"The Holy Spirit only comes into the areas where He is freely
admitted.

Daily Prayer
O Father, I think You have put Your finger right on my problem. Perhaps the
reason I have never felt the Holy Spirit's full control is because deep down
I never wanted it. But now I do. My whole being cries out for its rightful
Lord. I surrender now. Amen.

Matthew 20:1-16 (Click to view Bible text below.)*

*Fairness. It seems to be in our DNA. The notion of fairness seeks us out
and finds us early in life. Life should be fair, right? You know, an eye for
and eye, a tooth for a tooth. At some level, we all find this notion of
fairness comforting, if for no other reason than the basic self-centeredness
(sin) that lurks within us that says, "If I get punished, so should she!"
Or, "If his child gets a scholarship, why shouldn't mine?" Self-centeredness
does not find room for grace. It does not easily celebrate the good fortunes
of others. It works very hard, if at all, in feeling the joy that comes to
others who receive something without working for it, paying for it or
deserving it like we have. Laborers in the vineyard who all receive the same
pay regardless of how long they worked? Outrageous. Stupid. Even dangerous!
But Jesus pays no attention to our logic. The Kingdom of Heaven—the reality
he prayed would come to earth, as it is in heaven-seeks to live by grace,
abundance and the will of the Father. Even if someone gets blessed without
our approval. *

*Thank you God, for lifting us up-however we may grumble during the
process-to the pointless realities of life in the Kingdom. Thank you for not
making the Kingdom of Heaven a system of points, but of grace. May this
reality burn deeply into our hearts so that we can find the joy in it. Amen.

Thomas Aitken
Bishop, Northeastern Minnesota Synod
Master of Divinity, 1985
Matthew 20:1-16 (NRSV)*

*1 "For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the
morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. *

*2 "After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, he sent them
into his vineyard. *

*3 "When he went out about nine o'clock, he saw others standing idle in the
market-place; *

*4 "and he said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you
whatever is right.' So they went. *

*5 "When he went out again about noon and about three o'clock, he did the
same. *

*6 "And about five o'clock he went out and found others standing around; and
he said to them, 'Why are you standing here idle all day?' *

*7 "They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.' He said to them, 'You
also go into the vineyard.' *

*8 "When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, 'Call
the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going
to the first.' *

*9 "When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the
usual daily wage. *

*10 "Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each
of them also received the usual daily wage. *

*11 "And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, *

*12 "saying, 'These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal
to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.' *

*13 "But he replied to one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did
you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? *

*14 "'Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the
same as I give to you. *

*15 "'Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are
you envious because I am generous?' *

*16 "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." *

*Dealing with the small anxieties of life*

September 15, 2011

*"Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious
for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."*

*Matthew 6:34*

Dr. Howard Hendricks, a professor at Dallas Seminary, was once entertaining
a rather esteemed colleague from another seminary and he took him home for
dinner. As they sat down around the table, Dr. Hendricks asked his little
four-year-old boy to give thanks.

And with this esteemed religious leader at the end of the table, the little
boy prayed, "Dear Jesus, please be with the fence in the backyard. Amen."

Well, the visitor was rather startled by that simple prayer. So Dr.
Hendricks thought he'd better explain. He said to the man, "You see, sir, on
the other side of the fence is the biggest, baddest, meanest dog you've ever
seen. And every day my little boy prays, 'Jesus, be with that fence!'"

Now, is God interested in backyards? Sure! Is God interested in fences? Of
course! Is God interested that little boy's fear? Absolutely!

So whatever is making you anxious, whether it's finances, family issues,
health problems, or the dog on the other side of the fence, turn it over to
God and allow Him to calm your spirit!

*NO ANXIETY IS TOO SMALL FOR GOD TO HANDLE. SO PRAY AND TURN YOUR FEARS OVER
TO HIM, KNOWING THAT HE LOVES YOU, AND ALLOW HIM TO CALM YOUR SPIRIT!*

*And a man shall be as an hiding-place from the wind and a covert from the
tempest. (Isaiah 32:2) *

Who this Man is we all know. Who could He be but the Second Man, the Lord
from heaven, the man of sorrows, the Son of Man? What a hiding place He has
been to His people! He bears the full force of the wind Himself, and so He
shelters those who hide themselves in Him. We have thus escaped the wrath of
God, and we shall thus escape the anger of men, the cares of this life, and
the dread of death. Why do we stand in the wind when we may so readily and
so surely get out of it by hiding behind our Lord? Let us this day run to
Him and be at peace.

Often the common wind of trouble rises in its force and becomes a tempest,
sweeping everything before it. Things which looked firm and stable rock in
the blast, and many and great are the falls among our carnal confidences.
Our Lord Jesus, the glorious man, is a covert which is never blown down. In
Him we mark the tempest sweeping by, but we ourselves rest in delightful
serenity.

This day let us just stow ourselves away in our hiding place and sit and
sing under the protection of our Covert. Blessed Jesus! Blessed Jesus! How
we love Thee! Well we may, for Thou art to us a shelter in the time of
storm.

DAILY-E-VOTIONAL
BLESSINGS FROM THE HEART
Pastor Cecil A. Thompson

THE FAMILY GROWS!
Acts 2:40-41
With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, "Save
yourselves from this corrupt generation." Those who accepted his message
were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.

This afternoon we were thrilled to have a visit from our newest
great-granddaughter. She is only five days old but here she was bringing her
parents along with her. I am sure you believe that she had the idea and
ability to do this by herself. Hee! Hee!
In a few weeks we will have an extra special blessing when three of our
grandchildren will be visiting, and we will be able to see all four of our
great-grandchildren together. This will be extra special since one family
lives in Austin, Texas, one in Berlin, Germany, and one about two hours
north of us. What a joyful gathering we are anticipating.
As I was thinking about how our family is growing, it led me to think about
the growth of the church of Jesus Christ. It may be only a few huddled
together in a mud hut or it may be thousands gathered in a magnificent place
of worship—but His family is growing.
I recently read an e-mail message reporting that a new believer had been
beheaded for becoming a Christian. As I reflected on this report I thought
of how across the ages, there have been many who have been willing to lay
down their lives rather than turn their backs on the Lord Jesus who laid
down His life for each of us. My prayer is that all true members of the
family of God will be willing to die rather that recant. If Jesus is worth
living for, He is worth dying for. Even so come quickly Lord Jesus!
Blessings dear hearts. Draw near to God today, trust Him completely and be a
blessing!

Pastor Cecil

Our Daily Devotional:

Judging Jonah

Jonah 4:4, NIV: "But the LORD replied, 'Is it right for you to be angry?'"

When the whole city of Nineveh repented, God determined not to destroy them
as He had threatened. It may seem odd, but this angered the Lord's prophet.
Jonah was brought to Nineveh to deliver the message that the Lord was about
to destroy them--and he wanted to see it happen. But let's not be too quick
to judge Jonah. From time to time we can be like Jonah. Sure, maybe we don't
sit on a hill and long for fire and brimstone to rain down from heaven upon
those we feel deserve God's judgment. But we, in our efforts to do the
Lord's work, expect Him to do His work according to our understanding--even
becoming frustrated if He does something else. Of the various obstacles we
face in our efforts to do God's work, our frustration and anger can become
our greatest hurdle. Such frustration can quickly take our eyes off of the
work, the purpose of that work, and the Lord whose work it is. If we take
our eyes off of Him, how shall we do His work? As God leads us into His
work, He is well aware of the obstacles that lie ahead. We have a choice--we
can put our eyes back on God and move forward; or we can sit angrily on our
hill and glare at the things we think ought not be. In which case we may
want to recall God's words to Jonah: "Is it right for you to be angry?" ...
Don't be a judging Jonah.

Jake's Story

Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's
purpose that prevails. --Proverbs 19:21

Our Wheels for the World team arrived in a small town in
Poland to distribute 225 wheelchairs and Bibles. Before the day had
hardly begun, however, their plans were in shreds. The assigned room
was tiny and cramped. But before anyone could come up with a plan B,
streams of families with disabled children began pouring through the
doors. The place quickly became packed and noisy. Everything was
thrown into confusion. "Lord Jesus," the team prayed together, "may
your purpose prevail here." Then they went to work greeting families,
assessing needs, locating pre-assigned wheelchairs, and sharing the
Gospel of Jesus at every opportunity.

The afternoon wore on. A tired father, carrying his little
five-year-old disabled boy on his back, finally reached the head of
the line. But when he lifted his son into the pre-assigned chair, his
shoulders slumped. It didn't fit! "I am so sorry!" our seating
specialist exclaimed, "this is the wrong chair." But there were only a
few chairs left. Pushing aside several adult chairs, she reached for a
child-sized one. But it was highly customized, with side
supports-including blue leather backing with "Jake" stitched across
the middle. In the end, there was no other choice. It was that chair
or nothing. When the father lifted his boy into the new chair, it fit
perfectly! An interpreter exclaimed, "It's like it was made for him!"

"By the way, what is your son's name?" someone asked the
boy's mother. "Jakob," she replied-and everyone gasped! When an
interpreter explained to the boy's mystified parents that "Jake" is
the shortened version of Jakob-they, too, cried for joy. The whole
family-along with almost sixty others-opened their hearts to receive
Jesus that day. The Lord's purpose had prevailed!

If you are struggling today with a plan-gone-haywire in
your life, take comfort in Proverbs 19:21. The Lord's purpose will
prevail.

Father, help me to see through the strands of my shredded plans

that if your purposes are truly my purposes, your heart's
desire will

prevail.

Today's Promise from the Bible

Psalm 37:39-40

But the salvation of the righteous [is] of the LORD: [he is] their
strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and
deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them,
because they trust in him.

Reflection

In simple eloquence, the psalmist describes the beauty and strength of
our Almighty God. By His graciousness, God's everlasting righteousness
is our refuge during times of grave trial and tribulation. What a
wonderful comfort! It is breath-taking to consider His love! He is our
unrelenting rock and the deliverer of all things! Let us rejoice
forever in the knowledge of Christ's saving hand and His reassuring
promise of deliverance!

Transcending Peace

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything,
by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to
God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

In place of worry, we should pray. In the earlier verses Paul has told
us to rejoice. This can be more easily accomplished if we present our
requests to God and then just trust Him. When we trust Him, His peace
guards our hearts and minds.

The Tyranny of the Customary

In the Old Testament, the enemy that threatened Israel the most was
the dictatorship of the customary. Israel became accustomed to walking
around in circles and was blissfully content to stay by the safety of
the mountain for a while. To put it another way, it was the psychology
of the usual. God finally broke into the rut they were in and said,
"You have been here long enough. It is time for you to move on." To
put Israel's experience into perspective for our benefit today, we
must see that the mountain represents a spiritual experience or a
spiritual state of affairs. Israel's problem was that they had given
up hope of ever getting the land God had promised them. They had
become satisfied with going in circles and camping in nice,
comfortable places. They had come under the spell of the psychology of
the routine. It kept them where they were and prevented them from
getting the riches God had promised them. If their enemy, the
Edomites, would have come after them, the Israelites would have fought
down to the last man and probably would have beaten the
Edomites--Israel would have made progress. Instead they were twiddling
their thumbs, waiting for the customary to keep on being customary.

Verse
East of the Jordan in the territory of Moab, Moses began to expound
this law, saying: The LORD our God said to us at Horeb, 'You have
stayed long enough at this mountain. Break camp and advance into the
hill country of the Amorities . . . Deuteronomy 1:5-7

Thought
After forty years there, life in the wilderness became customary for
the people of Israel. Have we, too, become accustomed to life in the
wilderness even though God calls us to move beyond into the life He
has promised?

Prayer
Lord, may I move on, closer and closer to You. Give me a holy
dissatisfaction for the customary and a deepening heart hunger for
You.

Days of Heaven on Earth

Some things have their cycle in an hour and some in a century. Long or
short, God's plans shall complete their cycle. The tender annual which
blossoms for a season and dies, and the American aloe which develops
in a century-each is true to its normal principle. Many of us desire
to pluck our fruit in June rather than wait until October, and so, of
course, the fruit is sour and immature. But God's purposes ripen
slowly and fully, and faith waits while it tarries knowing it will
surely come and will not tarry too long.

It is perfect rest to fully learn and wholly trust this glorious
promise. We may know without a question that His purposes shall be
accomplished when we have fully committed our ways to Him and are
walking in watchful obedience to His every prompting. This faith will
give a calm and tranquil poise to the spirit and save us from restless
fretting and trying to do too much ourselves.

Wait, and every wrong will righten,

Wait, and every cloud will brighten,

If you only wait.

Scripture
Though it tarry, wait for it; for it will surely come, and will not
tarry—Habakkuk 2:3

Psalm 116:3
The sorrows of death encompassed me, and the pains of hell laid hold
upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

Julie didn't want to think about dying, but ever since her third heart
attack, she could think of little else. She was so afraid of dying,
and she simply hated the hospital. Worrying was the worst thing she
could do. She needed a positive frame of mind, but try as she might,
her thoughts always turned to gloom and despair.
It is unfortunate that so many people are ignorant of the everlasting
life that can follow this one. Through God's promise of glory in
eternity, we no longer have anything to fear from death. Whatever
befalls us in this lifetime, it is nothing in relation to the eternal
home that awaits us. We need to focus on the life to come in times of
trial and sorrow. In the face of death we can feel secure that
everything will be just fine.

Prayer: In times of fear, dread, and sorrow, shine Your light of love
upon me, God. Help me to remember that I have life everlasting, and
nothing that occurs now can keep me from it. Amen.

Be Cautious When You Criticize
Romans 14:10-13
When we realize that each of us must give an account to God, it will
cause us to be more cautious about criticizing a Christian brother.
We will then heed what 1 Corinthians 4:5 says: "So do not make any
hasty or premature judgments before the time when the Lord comes
[again], for He will both bring to light the secret things that are
[now hidden] in darkness, and disclose and expose the [secret] aims
(motives and purposes) of hearts. Then every man will receive his
[due] commendation from God" (Amplified).
This is advice that Paul gave to the Corinthians, and it applies just
as directly to each believer today.
We shall all be judged one day--not by each other's standards and not
even by our own standards. We shall be judged by the standards of
Christ. Before God alone, we shall give an account for our own actions
and not for those of the other person.
I do not have to give an account for you, and you do not have to give
an account for me. Before God, I will have to give an account for
myself.
No wonder Paul said, "Let us not therefore judge one another any more:
but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion
to fall in his brother's way" (Rom. 14:13). In other words, we should
stop turning critical eyes on each other.
This is sometimes a difficult instruction to follow. It is natural to
always justify oneself and one's own actions in the face of what
others are doing. It is natural to criticize the other person because
he does not see or do things our way.
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every
one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath
done, whether it be good or bad" (2 Cor. 5:10).

Fulfilling our Responsibilities
Numbers 13:1-2, 16
And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, "Send men to spy out the land of
Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel; from each tribe
of their fathers you shall send a man, every one a leader among them.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land.
And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
Fulfilling Our Responsibilities
The British naval hero Lord Nelson took his responsibilities very
seriously. During his life he conscientiously served his nation in its
ongoing conflict with France and Spain. Fatally wounded in the battle
at Trafalgar, Nelson said before he died, "Thank God, I have done my
duty."
Joshua carried heavy responsibilities as well. He was a leader among
the people of his tribe. He was one of 12 chosen to spy out the land
of Canaan. Later he would become Moses' right-hand man in leading the
armies of Israel against their enemies. In fact, Moses gave him the
nickname "Joshua," which means "he shall save his people." That was a
tremendous responsibility to live up to as well. Yet with God's help,
Joshua was able to come to the end of his days with the confidence
that he had successfully fulfilled all the duties God had given him.
Most of us discover early that life has many obligations. There is
schooling to complete, a family to raise, a job to perform, a church
to support, bills to be paid, and so much more. And, if God calls you
into leadership, there are usually additional commitments that come
with your position. Some days can seem a bit overwhelming.
But don't be overpowered by it all. With God's help, you also can
complete your responsibilities. When you get swamped, take time out,
get alone with God in some secluded place, and read His Word for
encouragement and strength. Ask God's Spirit to refresh you and to
provide the wisdom you need to successfully fulfill all that is set
before you. Be faithful to your obligations and discover the
satisfaction of a life well lived.
Being responsible before God is being responsive to God.

Quenching the Thirst

Read Psalm 104:5-13
People who live in the city sometimes forget that God is the God of
creation and nature. In the United States alone, more than 2700 acres
of pavement are laid each day. Before long, God's creation might be
completely covered by concrete and asphalt. We need to pause and get
reacquainted with the God of creation. "You who laid the foundations
of the earth, so that it should not be moved forever, You covered it
with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains.
At Your rebuke they fled; at the voice of Your thunder they hastened
away.... You have set a boundary that they may not pass over, that
they may not return to cover the earth" (vv. 5-7,9). The psalmist
refers to the Flood in Noah's day. It was God's judgment. But the next
judgment He sends will be by fire, not water.
Water also is a blessing. "He sends the springs into the valleys; they
flow among the hills" (v. 10). This is a beautiful picture of the
rivers and springs and hills, all of which enable animals to have food
and drink. "They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild
donkeys quench their thirst" (v. 11). The birds of the heavens nest in
the trees by these rivers. I like the phrase in verse 12--"they sing
among the branches." God waters the earth. The crops grow, and man and
beast are able to live. And as an extra blessing, He puts the birds in
the branches to sing. All of creation is satisfied. "The earth is
satisfied with the fruit of Your works" (v. 13).
The God of creation also is the God of salvation, and He can satisfy
your thirsty soul today.

* * *
As you observe nature, you are reminded of God's physical provision.
He also provides for the spiritual needs of His people. Do you have a
need today? Ask God to flood your soul with His blessing!
