Sometimes there are things in our life that aren't meant to stay.
Sometimes change may not be what we want. Sometimes change is what we
really need. And sometimes saying goodbye is the hardest thing you
think you'll ever have to do, but sometimes it's saying 'hello again'
that breaks you down and makes you the most vulnerable person you'll
ever know. Sometimes change is too much to bear, but most of the time
change is the only thing saving your life.

The Cost of Living Up To the Expectations of Others
"You are your own best judge."

When you start judging yourself by looking through the eyes of
your parents, husband, friends, or boss, you end up running around
doing more and more in an effort to gain their approval. It does not
take long before you end up feeling exhausted, resentful and ready to
give up.

Trying to live your life by the expectations of others
disconnects you from your own desires. It leaves you feeling empty and
unmotivated. The gratification that comes from fulfilling the
expectations of others is very little and short-lived.

Reclaim the energy and happiness that is rightfully yours! Be
your own judge and live by your own expectations. As you reclaim your
potential, you will thrive and feel energized, because you are
accomplishing things that are important to you. Start today!

Never Ever Give Up!
"Small victories are worth celebrating."

We're a results oriented society, so we tend to hold off
celebrations until we've reached our final goal. But the truth is that
every day holds wonderful successes and important victories. I'm
talking about celebrating progress.

Progress can be realizing mini-goals that lead to your ultimate
goal, or it can be something more subtle or unexpected, something that
happens that has meaning for you. For example, perhaps you were blamed
for something at work that was not your fault. Instead of remaining
quiet, you confidently stood your ground. Maybe you received a
compliment and were surprised by how good it made you feel.

The really wonderful thing about moments like these are that
they can happen anytime and sometimes when you least expect them. They
can also turn everything around. Just when you begin to second guess
yourself, you're reminded of your progress.

Don't give up. You are making progress!

Christ told us to help out those that
seem to be our enemies?? It is just sooooo
easy to love the lovely when it's the unlovely that
we are supposed to love. Think of the unloveliest
person you know or the one that irratates you the most,
or the one you most want to stay away from, and pray
for that person daily. It sure is hard to not like the
person your praying for.!!!!
Read Luke 6:35-b
(hoping for nothing in return.)

Psalm 5:8
Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness because of mine enemies; make
thy way straight before my face.
Barry hated to be left out of the good times his friends had, but he
hated it even worse when they went out drinking and cruising. He
didn't like to drink, and his friends always mocked him because of it.
Thank goodness for Jean. She had come along and given him an excuse
not to go out. She really disapproved of drinking and driving, so
Barry could do for Jean what he had never been able to do for himself:
say no!

God gives us the reason to say no. In those areas of our life where we
are too weak to say no to our friends, we can learn to say no because
we know that God wants us to. So many people would lead us from path
of God, many of them unintentionally. Ask the Lord for guidance. In
the face of our strongest temptations, God will give us the strength
and the reason to resist.

Prayer: O God, I find myself in some terrible situations that I don't
want to be in. Help me to free myself from those things I know
displease You. Guide me, strengthen me, liberate me, I pray. Amen.

I Will Give You Rest
"Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest." Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

What a promise this is to us! We just need to go to our Lord and He
will give us rest. How often during the day I long for rest. Rest from
my busy life, rest from the problems that arise in caring for a
husband and children, rest from all the expectations of others that
engulf me. Sometimes, I am just overwhelmed. I am weary, I am
heavy-laden and I need rest. That's when I hear my Savior's voice
saying, "Come to Me." If I listen, if I obey, if I deliberately set
aside all my cares and go to Him, I do find rest and refreshing. I can
go on to perform all the tasks that need to be done...in His strength.
It is amazing what can be accomplished in His strength! How thankful I
am for a Savior who cares about me and doesn't want me to go through
life in a frenzy. He wants me to be at peace and I can only do that
with Him at my side.
Father, help me to remember to seek out your Son, each day, that I may
know rest. Thank you for providing Jesus to be my companion on this
journey home. Thank you for the strength that He provides in carrying
my burdens for me. Truly you have blessed me with a special friend.
Let me never lose sight of Him and all He is to me. Amen

Only One YouFrom the place of His dwelling He looks on all the
inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually; He
considers all their works. Psalm 33:14-15 NKJV
The truth is—you were a brand-new idea from the mind of God!

Psalm 33:14-15 says, "From the place of His dwelling, He looks on all
the inhabitants of the earth; He fashions their hearts individually."

You're the only you God made! He made you and broke the mold! No one
can duplicate your life.

Scan history for your replica—you won't find it! You're tailor made
by God. God personally formed and made you. You're not one of many!
You're it!
And if you don't take full advantage of how God made you, we don't get
you. We miss out!

Think of it this way: you're heaven's Halley's comet. And we have
one shot at seeing you shine!

The Leadership Lifestyle - #6524
Thursday, January 12, 2012

Every summer we used to take a large delegation to a great youth
conference in Ocean City, New Jersey. One of our veteran staff was in
charge of that delegation, and it was a big responsibility at the
shore. When my son was old enough to go to that conference, he
commented on Greg's leadership. He said, "You know, Greg's really
serious." Well my wife and I kind of laughed. We said, "Oh, you should
hear some of the crazy things he's done down at Ocean City." And then
my son said, "Not any more. He's in charge now." Well, my son was
making a pretty valid observation. As your authority increases, so
does your responsibility. Followers, I guess, can goof off, but
leadership; oh, that's serious business.
I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The
Leadership Lifestyle."
Now, our word for today from the Word of God is about leaders, and you
might be one whether you realize it or not. Hebrews 13:17 - "Obey your
leaders and submit to their authority." Now, I've always thought "Hey,
wouldn't it be great to be one of those leaders? You get to be obeyed
and submitted to." Yeah, wait until you hear the rest of the verse.
"...they keep watch over you as men who must give an account." Whoa.
That means that if you have anyone looking to you, you will one day
have the privilege and the opportunity to explain to God what you did
with those people. Man! "God, here's how I influenced those people and
why they ended up as they did."
Well see, God's looking for people that He can trust with a promotion.
He's looking for teachers and leaders, and musicians, and shepherds
for His Kingdom. And maybe He's trusted you with some influence: a
class, or a study group, a church, maybe a musical ministry, a
position of authority in God's work. Well, then, be careful how you
live. You can do so much good, and you can do so much harm.
In a letter that James Dobson wrote years ago he told about an
incident that occurred when he went to a Christian book seller's
convention and for the first time he saw all of his materials
displayed and his picture all over the place. And he said, "I heard as
it were almost an audible voice saying, 'Jim, look around you. I have
chosen for reasons that you don't understand to make you visible and
influential with My people. And in that sense, I am preparing to make
the work of My Kingdom vulnerable to you. That's why I'm telling you
to be careful; think before you act; hold a tighter reign on your
tongue and on your thought life than ever before. When your natural
impulse is to become angry or vindictive, resist the temptation as
much as possible, and keep your life free of willful and deliberate
sin. You will soon be in a position to hurt my people. See that it
doesn't happen.'" Whew! Man!
Now, you're not a Dobson, or some spiritual star perhaps, but maybe
God's lifted you to a place where others are looking at you or to you.
And it's exciting, but it's a heavy responsibility; one for which you
must give account the Bible says. Exercise care in what you say, what
you laugh at, what you joke about. Be careful what you watch. Be
careful what you listen to. Stop with the negative comments, the
critical comments before anybody can hear them, those displays of
anger, those double-meaning comments. Huh-uh, not for you; not now.
God has called you to some measure of leadership and the responsible
lifestyle that goes with that. I think that's an awfully powerful
incentive to be all you were meant to be in Christ. It's a good thing;
a good reason to live up to what Jesus wants all of His kids to live
up to. But He has put trust in your hands. He's put His reputation in
your hands. He has made His Kingdom vulnerable to you. You are in a
position to hurt some of God's people. See that it doesn't happen.

Today's Promise from the Bible

Psalm 145:19

He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear
their cry, and will save them.

Reflection

Fear the Lord and seek Him on His heavenly throne and you will be
given the desires of your heart. So fervent is the believer's desire
to see God and please Him that God is well pleased to fulfil this
desire. These that seek God shall see Him! This is incredible! This is
amazing! There is no reason that man in his shabby and sinful
existence has any right to expect God to reveal Himself. Yet God has
given His children surpassing desire to see Him and He in mercy will
show Himself to His children! Glory!

Living Sanctified

1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 It is God's will that you should be sanctified:
that you should avoid sexual immorality . . . and that in this matter
no one should wrong his brother or take advantage of him. The Lord
will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and
warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy
life.

Sexual immorality is a sin against one's own body. But it is also a
sin against the partner's body. We wrong them, and take advantage of
them. Paul promises us that if we disregard others in this way, God
will punish us.

God's Word Gives Light

"I'm sorry. . . . I'm a stranger here myself." That is the only honest
answer. Others are sometimes given, but they are never valid answers.
They spring out of pride or error or uncritical and wishful thinking,
and they are not to be trusted. It is no good asking for information
of another who is as ignorant as ourselves. We are all strangers in a
strange world. Is our state hopeless then? Is no answer to be had?
Must we live in a world we do not understand and go out into a future
of dark uncertainty? No, thank God, things are not as bad as that.
There is an answer. We can find light. Our questions have been
answered. "From a child," wrote Paul to Timothy, "thou hast known the
holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation
through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by
inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness." It is the universal
testimony of the saints of the ages that when the light of the
Scriptures enters, the darkness of spiritual ignorance vanishes. God's
Word giveth light. It has answer for every qestion that matters. The
merely curious question it ignores, but every real inquiry made by the
sincere heart is met with full light. It is important that we search
the Scriptures daily, and more important still that we approach them
with faith and humility, bowing our hearts to their instructions and
commands. Then through faith in Christ we cease to be strangers and
become sons of God.

Verse
The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the
simple. Psalm 119:130

Thought
God's words give light on those most difficult of life issues. That
light does not necessarily illuminate quickly nor to our full
satisfaction. Imperative is careful searching of God's Word and
serious listening to His voice. But God does give light!

Prayer
Father, You are God. You know all things. You are from forever to
forever. To You I come with those burning questions. Your answers to
some I cannot yet understand. My mind is restricted and my experience
limited. Yet in You I find light and peace.

We must receive, as well as ask. We must take the place of believing
and recognize ourselves as in it.

A friend once said to me, "I want to get into the will of God." I
answered: "Will you then step into the will of God? And now, are you
in the will of God? My question aroused in the man a thought he had
not considered. He saw that he had been straining after but not
receiving the blessing he sought.

Jesus had said, Ask, and ye shall receive (John 16:24). The very
strain keeps back the blessing. The strong tension of all your
spiritual nature so binds you that you are not open to the blessing
which God is waiting to give you. Whosoever will, let him take the
water of life freely (Revelation 22:17).

He tells me there is cleansing

From every secret sin,

And a great and full salvation

To keep the heart within

And I take Him in His fullness,

With all His glorious grace,

For He says it is mine by taking,

And I take just what He says.

Scripture
Ask, and it shall be given you—Matthew 7:

Prayer Where and When?

"From inside the fish Jonah prayed 'In my distress I called to the
Lord, and He answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for
help, and you listened to my cry.'" (JONAH 2:1-2)
Scripture Focus: Jonah 1:1, 3:3

Is there a proper place to pray? You'd be hard pressed to make a case
for that since God's people prayed everywhere from inside of caves to
out in the desert to inside of a fish. No ornate church of any kind is
required. It seems that a good time for Jonah to talk to God would
have been when God commissioned him to preach to a Gentile city and
Jonah was unwilling to go. If he had, he might not have ended up in a
fish's stomach, praying desperately. But even from within his
unwelcoming host, Jonah sought the Lord through prayer.

"I have been banished from your sight," Jonah said (2:4). He was
wrong. God knew exactly where Jonah was. He always knows precisely
where we are, no matter how lost we may be. When we feel billions of
miles away from Him, suffocating in darkness, He hears our prayers.

We see God's grace toward His disobedient child, Jonah, as He gave him
a second chance. God's grace is ours, even when we try to run from His
will. His grace and kindness lead us to repentance.

Insight: No matter what our circumstances, the proper place to pray is
anywhere we are. the proper time to pray is now.

"Late to Choir Practice"

How do teenagers do it? As high school student, I was playing
football, working a part-time job, involved on the debate team, and
still found time to sing in the church choir, which practiced on
Wednesday nights after the prayer service. I made it a habit to arrive
late, not because it was necessary to do so, but because it wasn't a
priority for me.

Bill Hamilton, the Minister of Music, always started rehearsals on
time and expected us to be in our places at the beginning, not five or
ten minutes late.

After everyone had left one night, Bill approached me to ask the
reason for my chronic tardiness. I had no excuse and told him so. Then
he said something that has stuck with me all these years.

"Anything worth doing is worth doing on time."

There were no threats, no intimidation, no anger... just a kind word
of wisdom to a young man in his formative years.

I am never late anyplace I go. In fact, I am always early to
everything, thanks to Bill Hamilton.

You never know when a kind word will be taken to heart by those around
you. The wisdom of kindness is heard and remembered more readily than
words of harshness. Too often the message is lost in the presentation,
not in the importance of the thought expressed. How we address each
other is just as important as the content of our conversation, and a
word spoken in kindness has more impact than a point driven home with
a hammer!

"May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing
in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." (Psalm 19:14)

GospeLines Prayer: "Father, give me words which sound like they come
from your heart. Never let your message be lost because I have been
insensitive in the way I speak to others. Thank you for teaching me to
be on time to choir practice." Amen and amen.

**And that is why I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I
know the One I have believed in and am persuaded that He is able to guard
what has been entrusted to me until that day. 2 Timothy 1:12, HCSB*

We know the importance of placing our valuables and money in safe places.
We put our important documents in the banks' safety deposit boxes. The
government insures our bank savings through the FDIC.

In today's passage Paul wrote about entrusting something far more important
than material things for safekeeping. He instructed Timothy not to be
ashamed of the gospel or of his mentor Paul who was in prison. Paul
described the gospel, its power to save, and its origin in the grace of God.

Paul was suffering for the gospel, yet he was full of confidence and hope
for the future based on the person of Jesus Christ, in whom he had
believed. He had not placed his faith in some philosophy or creed. Because
Paul knew Jesus intimately and personally, he was certain he could trust
Jesus with the salvation of his soul. He knew it would be kept safely until
that last day of accounting.

Father, thank You for Jesus, who is able to keep me until that last day.

(Click

Jerry died last month. He would not be recognized on the streets of Duluth
or Proctor as being much different from any other blue-collar railroad
engineer. He was in the Korean War and bore those common scars of the
spirit not quite yet resolved by the balm of grace.

We could see that this wiry former fullback was failing quickly. Three
weeks before his death we were sitting together at a pie social when he
punched me in the arm and said, "I can still kick your a**." From his
hospital bed, his final intelligible words to me were, "I love my church."
One sentence in jest and one deeply from his heart; I treasure them both.

Just before the funeral, a young mother of four, who had recently gone
through some extraordinarily complex domestic issues, shared with me that
Jerry had told her to just be open with members of the congregation about
her situation and all would be well. Jerry's words were life restoring.

*We give thanks that the power of your grace comes to heal and give life
through those who will likely never be aware of the difference they have
made in the lives of others. Amen. *

*John 1:43-51* (NRSV)

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to
him, "Follow me."

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom
Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from
Nazareth."

46 Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip
said to him, "Come and see."

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael coming towards him, he said of him, "Here is
truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!"

48 Nathanael asked him, "Where did you come to know me?" Jesus answered, "I
saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you."

49 Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of
Israel!"

50 Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under
the fig tree? You will see greater things than these."

51 And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened
and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man."

as Jesus-to watch Him grow and mature from a small child to a teenager and
finally to a young adult. We know that Mary would have been witness to this
as well as Joseph for a certain extent of time. But the Bible tells us that
there were other half-siblings who grew up alongside Jesus, and they
included four half-brothers and at least two half-sisters (Mark 6:3). *

*One of those half-brothers, James, went on to become the leader of the
Jerusalem Church, and he also authored an epistle that bears his name.
Notice how he began his epistle in the verse above, "James, a bondservant
of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ..." *

*It's interesting that James doesn't make it a point to identify himself as
one of the few who got to grow up alongside Jesus. He didn't write, "James,
a special someone who had an inside track on who Jesus is so you better pay
special attention to me." Instead, he put himself in with everyone else,
calling himself a "bondservant." *

*This title tells us something significant about James. It speaks to his
humility and his desire to be known as a servant and not a master. He
didn't want to use his unique vantage point as a means of climbing over
others, because he understood that we're all essentially equal in Christ's
eyes. Whether you grew up under same roof with Jesus or not, He doesn't
play favorites. We all have equal access to the privileges of knowing
Jesus, and the greatest privilege of all is to serve Him. *

*James doesn't elaborate on what it was like to grow up alongside Jesus.
Instead, he reminds us that at the end of the day the greatest honor we can
ever attain or experience in this life is to be servants of the King of
kings, and that is true for absolutely everyone. *

**

*Think About It? What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does
this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I
need to make? What is my prayer for today?
*

*Our Daily Devotional:*

*God's Stirring*

*John 5:6-8, NKJV: "When Jesus saw him lying there, and knew that he
already had been in that condition a long time, He said to him, 'Do you
want to be made well?' The sick man answered Him, 'Sir, I have no man to
put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; but while I am coming,
another steps down before me.' Jesus said to him, 'Rise, take up your bed
and walk.'"*

*I venture to say that I am not alone in this, but that at certain times,
and in various ways, we are each stirred by the Spirit of God. Where once
the waters were placid, they are now unsettled--an indication of the Hand
of God at work. When we see such stirring, are we willing and ready to act
and to "get into the waters" so to speak? Or will we sit by bemoaning our
inadequacies and watch yet another opportunity pass by? Jesus asks us, "Do
you want to be well?" How many times do we say things like, "I want to lose
weight," or "I want to be better with my finances," or "I want to spend
more time in God's Word," only to allow the good intentions to fade into
the settled pool of complacency and neglect? God has a great many things He
is ready to do in our lives. And yet so many of us so often continue to sit
by the pool.*

Abundant Life in Christ
"I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly." John 10:10 Who would not like to have an abundant life?
Many immediately think of temporal and material blessings that
surround us. These are nice and certainly add to the comfort and ease
of our lives. But Christ is speaking of an ABUNDANT LIFE that goes
much deeper than the things the world strives for and acclaims as
important and necessary.

God wants us to know Him, not only as the One who has forgiven us of
our sins and is our Savior, but also to crown Him the LORD OF OUR
LIFE! He wants us to declare Him the authority and sovereign of our
life by yielding our will in obedience and compliance to His will. It
is then our lives will be open and receptive to all He wants to be to
us. We will know in reality the blessings of the covenant relationship
given to all who live under His lordship.

Let's look at a few blessings that highlight the "abundant life in
Christ" that He has for His own. When we accepted Christ as our
Savior, He set His seal upon us as His peculiar treasure. He sets
apart those who are godly for Him. He gives His angels charge over us.
God declares that from that day we are His purchased possessions. God
makes known to us and to the world around us that we are His. He gives
us the spirit of adoption whereby we cry "Abba, Father." The Holy
Spirit assures us that we are children of God. He enables us to walk
as Christ walked. He empowers us to shine as a light in the midst of a
dark and perverse world. He makes us a new creation in Christ by His
transforming power. He gives us the blessed hope of eternal life. He
will make us high above all people in praise, in name, and in honor.
He has bestowed His love on us and we are called the sons of God. He
has prepared crowns and kingdoms that we may sit with Him in eternity
and be
partakers of His glor! y forever!

This and infinitely more than words can express God has prepared for
those who love Him and embrace His covenant of life and peace. He
pledges His truth and faithfulness for the performance of His Word. We
need to hearken to His voice, even as the angels did. David wrote,
"Bless the Lord, ye his angels that excel in strength, that do His
commandments, hearkening unto the voice of His word." We should search
His Word and meditate upon it so we may know what He says to us. Oh,
that we might have an ear to hear the "still small voice" of the Holy
Spirit as He reveals, teaches, and directs our lives in His way, and
to respond without hesitation or reservation. The covenant that God
has made with us is inconceivable, irrevocable, and beyond human
comprehension. The eternal Creator of all things, by whom all things
consist, and through whom they are held together in His condescending
love, has reconciled us to Himself and gives us not only life, but
also life
more abundant!

Let me ask you, have you entered into this blessed relationship with
Christ? Are you appropriating what He has purchased for you, this
abundant life in Christ? Neglect not what is yours by faith. I
challenge you: POSSESS YOUR INHERITANCE!
