Then I said, "Here I am, I have come it is written about me in the
scroll. I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my
heart." (Psalm 40:7-8 *NIV )

God has a plan for each of us, for it is written; For I know the
plans I have for you," declares
the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you
hope and a future.
( Jeremiah 29:11 )

Now when we follow the path that God has for us, we find
that God is a very kind leader. Only He knows our future, and His
plans for us are good and full of hope! This does not mean that we
will be spared pain, suffering, or hardship, but that God will see us
through to a glorious conclusion!

After all; The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the
heart. The commands of the
Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. They are more precious
than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than
honey from the comb. ( Psalms 19:8 & 10 )

Further, If the Lord delights in a man's way, He makes his steps
firm; though he stumble, he
will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with His
hand.
( Psalms 37:23-24 )

So if you are not already walking the path that God has chosen for
you, why not ask Him in prayer to lead you to it. For once you have
found that path your heart will
become filled with joy; And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Amen!
( Philippians 4:7 )

Pastor Allen

WITH ALL PRAYER AND PETITION

Ephesians 6:18
With all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with
this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all
the saints

The mother of one of my seminary students was a psychic. She said to him
once, "Jim, have you been praying for me?" "Of course I have, Mother."
"Well, don't," she insisted, "because you're disturbing my aura."

I say pray on! We never know completely the effects of our prayers, but we
do know that God includes prayer as part of His strategy for establishing
His kingdom and ensuring our spiritual victory.

One of the most dramatic deliverances I have observed happened in a man who
was a high priest in the upper echelons of Satanism. Six months after he
was set free he gave his testimony in our church. At the close of his
testimony I asked him, "Based on your experience on 'the other side,' what
is the Christian's greatest strategy against demonic influence?"

"Prayer," he answered forcefully. "And when you pray, mean it. Fervent
prayer thwarts Satan's activity like nothing else."

What is prayer? It is communication with God by which we express our
dependence on Him. God knows what we need in our battle with the powers of
darkness, and He is more ready to meet our needs than we are to ask. But
until we express our dependence on Him in prayer, God may not act. In
prayer we say, "You are the Lord, not I. You know what's best; I don't. I'm
not telling You what to do; I'm asking." Prayer is a means by which God
guides and protects His children.

Praying in the Spirit is God's way of helping us pray when we don't know
how: "The Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as
we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us" (Romans 8:26). Helps
(sunantilambano) depicts the Holy Spirit's role of coming alongside us in
our condition of human frailty and spiritual vulnerability and bearing us
to the other side of spiritual protection and victory.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord, that prayer is such a powerful weapon in my
arsenal against the powers of darkness.

Read Genesis 34 – 36
Highlights:
Dinah, daughter of Jacob and Leah, is raped; Simeon and Levi's revenge;
Jacob's return to Bethel; Abrahamic Covenant renewed.
Jacob continued on toward Bethel because the Lord had said: I am the God of
Bethel . . . return unto the land of thy kindred (Gen. 31:13). But, just a
short distance from Bethel, Jacob discovered the beautiful valleys and
opportunities for financial gain near Shechem (33:18). For ten years
Jacob's stay seemed to be successful. Then we read of the tragedy of his
daughter Dinah. When Shechem . . . prince of the country, saw her, he took
her, and lay with her, and defiled (violated) her (34:2). In revenge for
their sister Dinah's rape, Simeon and Levi slew all the men of Shechem.
Even godly parents can become so involved in achieving material goals that
they neglect to train up a child in the way he should go (Prov. 22:6).
Worldly attractions often gain control of their children's hearts and lead
to heartbreaking consequences.
Surely, we can learn from Jacob that material success is no assurance that
we are in the will of God. But, perhaps one of the greatest lessons we can
learn from Jacob's tragedies is that he didn't give up when his situation
looked hopeless. Instead, he turned in faith to the Lord, who said: Arise,
go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that
appeared unto thee when thou fleddest from the face of Esau thy brother
(Gen. 35:1). At this time of renewal, Jacob instructed his family: Put away
the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your
garments: And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an
altar unto God, who . . . was with me in the way which I went (35:2-3).
Three things that Jacob said to his family have a parallel for Christians.
First he said: Put away the strange gods — a reminder that old habits of
sin must be forsaken. Then he said: Be clean, and change your garments — a
reminder to follow . . . holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord
(Heb. 12:14). Thirdly, he worshiped God. We are to worship only God: Thou
shalt worship the Lord thy God, and Him only shalt thou serve (Luke 4:8).
Our participation in worship at a church is a very important way in which
God speaks to us through Bible study, hymns of praise, and sermons. We also
worship while presenting our tithes and offerings and participating in the
sacred ordinances of baptism and the Lord's Supper. Christ also loved the
Church, and gave Himself for it; That He might sanctify and cleanse it with
the washing of water by the Word (Eph. 5:25-26).
Thought for Today:
If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto
honour, sanctified, and meet for the Master's use, and prepared unto every
good work (II Tim. 2:21).
Christ Revealed:
As God Almighty, El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One (Gen. 35:11). Jesus is
the Lord . . . which is . . . the Almighty (Rev. 1:8).
Word Studies:
34:2 defiled, raped; 34:3 clave, clung to, was passionately attracted to;
34:7 wrought folly, brought disgrace; 34:27 spoiled, plundered; 34:30
troubled, made trouble for; 35:11 come out of thy loins, be among your
descendants.

Genesis 21

Abraham and Sarah rejoice in the birth of the son of promise.
INSIGHT
Perhaps we do not celebrate enough -- often enough or grandly enough.
Perhaps we do not make enough out of the good things God does for us.
Abraham made a great feast on the day Isaac was weaned. Certainly that was
a cultural event.
It would seem odd to celebrate the same event today. Yet there are other
things we could celebrate within our culture, but we don't.
When was the last time you made a big deal out of something important?
Perhaps a high school or college graduation. A successful music recital.
Climbing a mountain, or running a marathon.
God has created us with emotions that make life a richer experience for us.
Perhaps we should celebrate more -- in both quantity and quality.
PRAYER
· Celebrate your personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ by giving
Him your praise:

I will go in the strength of the Lord God;
I will make mention of Your righteousness,
of Yours only.
O God, You have taught me from my youth;
And to this day I declare Your wondrous
works (Psalm 71:16-17).

· Now pray this confession to the Lord:

Lord, You are near to those who have a
broken heart,
And save such as have a contrite spirit
(based on Psalm 34:18).

· Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree
with God's will, voice your affirmation of His Word:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of
mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation,
that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the
comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

· As you make your requests known to the Lord, pray for:
· the Lord's leading in your life,
· opportunities to share your faith,
· the concerns of your heart.

· Offer this prayer of worship to the Lord:
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask
or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the
church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen
(Ephesians 3:20-21).

Secret Places

"I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places,
so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you
by name." (Isa 45:3).
When God takes you to a depth of soul experience be alert to new truths and
new perspectives. During these times God often leads us to amazing new
discoveries. It can be a storehouse of unexpected riches for the soul.
Bible teacher F. B. Meyer once observed, "Whenever you get into a prison of
circumstances, be on watch. Prisons are rare places for seeing things. It
was in prison that Bunyan saw his wondrous allegory and Paul met the Lord
and John looked through heaven's open door and Joseph saw God's mercy. God
has no chance to show His mercy to some of us except when we are in some
distressing sorrow. The night is the time to see the stars."1
I began writing TGIF Today God Is First daily devotionals in the middle of
a seven year period of darkness. Today, the devotionals are read daily by
hundreds of thousands of people around the world. God has revealed to me
secret things that have benefited countless others. Writing has become a
central focus of God's work in me. If I had not gone through that dark
time, I wouldn't be an author today.
We must live each day to the fullest. We can't live in the past or in the
future. We must live in the moment that God gives us right now. Our time of
deliverance will come according to God's schedule. Meanwhile, we need to be
faithful in doing what God has given us to do and be content in the place
where He has placed us.
When we go through a trial of adversity, we need to understand that God is
performing radical surgery on our life. The purpose of this surgery is not
to destroy us, but to give us a new heart. God is making a fundamental
change in who we are and who we will be.
And, He will always reveal treasures from these secret places if we are
willing to walk through the process patiently.

Coming Out of the Dark Part 2
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
Isaiah 45:3 "I will give you the treasures of darkness, riches stored in
secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel,
who summons you by name."
Friend to Friend
Children are wonderfully different. When our son, Jered, was nine months
old, he began to pull up on every piece of furniture he could find. For
weeks, he maneuvered his way around our home until the day he took his
first step alone. It was a step of inches, but we celebrated as if he had
completed a marathon. On the other hand, our daughter, Danna, had a
different plan. She never pulled up on a piece of furniture and never took
"a" step. When she was ten months old, Danna stood up, looked around and
trotted across the room. Jered and Danna both walk extremely well today as
young adults, but they both began with tiny steps and in their own way.
Nobody gets depressed overnight and nobody overcomes depression overnight.
The journey out of the pit is a process of steps uniquely planned by your
Father. Let's look at some of the steps we must take in order to find our
way out of the dark.
1. Wait. The psalmist simply says,"I waited." Waiting is not passive.
Waiting is a time of preparation, a time of rest and healing, a time when
God covers us with the shadow of His wing.
To wait means to accept the pit.
Isaiah 45:3 is a compelling verse, "I will give you the treasures of
darkness, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am
the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name."
Any time the word, "LORD" is capitalized, it means "Father" or "Dearest
Daddy." This verse indicates that our Father has gone before us and, in
every dark moment or painful circumstance, has buried a treasure or stored
a secret. The only way we can find the treasure or learn the secret is to
pass through that darkness. Some things cannot be learned in the light. The
pit of depression has become a hedge of protection in my life, a warning
light that something is wrong or out of balance. To wait means to accept
the pit, knowing it is for our good.
To wait means to admit there is a problem. Isaiah 40:29 "He gives power to
the tired and worn out, and strength to the weak."
We must be willing to admit we are struggling, but pride often prevents us
from doing so. Emotional health begins at the point of emotional integrity,
being willing to say "I need help!" and being honest with ourselves and
with others. When clinical depression first overwhelmed my life, my
husband, Dan, was the pastor of a large, fast-growing church in South
Florida. We could choose to be transparent and real or we could sweep my
struggle under the rug. We concluded that to be right, we had to be real.
Dan and I shared my battle with the staff, the deacons and then with the
entire church. Yes, we took a risk but learned an important lesson in
doing so. A shared load is a lighter load because we were created to need
each other.
To wait means to be still. "I waited." To wait means to hope in and look
for someone or something who will rescue us.
So much about God can never be known on the run. We can get so wrapped up
in everyday life that we fail to be wrapped up in Him. The busier we are,
the more stillness and rest we need. During those two years in the pit, I
not only gave up every role of leadership in church, I could not even
attend church at times because of panic attacks. The Father taught me an
important truth. He is more concerned with who I am than what I do.
2. Cry out for help. Psalm 40:1 "I waited patiently for the Lord; He
turned to me and heard my cry."
People struggling with depression often look for help in the wrong places.
Let me share with you some of the rightplaces.
God. Your Fatherstands waiting to hear your voice; and when you cry out to
Him, He comes running – through His Word, through prayer and through His
people. There was a terrible storm and the little girl was afraid. When she
cried out in fear, her father came running down the hall, into the bedroom
and scooped her up in his arms as he said, "Honey, God will take care of
you." The tearful child replied, "I know God loves me and will take care of
me but right now, I need somebody with skin on." If you cry out to God, He
will come to you in some way.
Doctors and counselors. Proverbs 15:22 gives us an important truth when it
says, "Plans go wrong with too few counselors; many counselors bring
success." I encourage anyone experiencing depression to get a physical
because depression is often rooted in a physical problem, requiring
medication. The medication does not eliminate the depression but simply
levels the playing field so whatever is triggering the depression can be
addressed. Christian counselors are a gift from God. He knew we would need
them.
Others. 1 Thessalonians 5:11 instructs us to "encourage each other and give
each other strength." I would never have survived the pit of clinical
depression without the help and encouragement of family and friends.
Members of our church brought meals, cleaned house and helped take care of
our kids. The deacons were guardian angels at church and other women took
my place in leadership. I would still be in that pit if it were not for
these people who helped rescue me. Has it affected their opinion of me?
Yes! It has shown them that I am just like them and has given them
permission to face their own weaknesses. You may be thinking, "I have no
one in my life that will help me." If you cry out to God, He will bring you
help.
3. Count on God to come through. One of the promises I clung to while
sitting in the darkness of depression was Psalm 107:13-14. "Then they cried
to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He
brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their
chains." The Psalmist promises that when you cry out to God, He will:
· "lift you up out of the slimy pit"
· "set your feet on a rock"
· "give you a new place to stand"
· "put a new song in your heart"
· "use your pit so that others will "see and trust God".
God is drawn to broken people. Psalm 40:1 says "He turned to me." Notice it
does not say David turned to God. Honestly, I doubt David had the strength
to turn to God – so God turned to him. God heard the cry of David, and He
will hear yours. I was angry at God but He never turned away from me.
Instead, He surrounded me with His love and compassion and as Psalm 56:8
promises, He knew every tear I cried. "You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one
in your book." You can count on God to come through.
4. Be patient. "I waited patiently for the Lord." The word "patiently"
means "without tiring and with perseverance." To come out of the darkness
takes time and requires patience. It took me many years to hit rock bottom.
It took me two years to climb out of that pit and I am still climbing. Yes,
I still battle depression from time to time. I have asked God to deliver
me, but He has said "no." Do you know what my name, Mary, means -- bitter,
but when broken, sweet. Depression keeps me broken and anything that makes
me cry out to God can be counted as a blessing. When we come to the end of
ourselves, God begins.
The story is told of a little boy who was walking home when he spotted a
caterpillar struggling to get out of its cocoon. Feeling sorry for the
helpless creature, the little boy ran home, grabbed a pair of scissors and
ran back to cut the caterpillar free. He watched it spread its wings and
try to fly, only to discover that it couldn't. It is in the struggle out of
the darkness of the cocoon that the butterfly's wings gain enough strength
to fly. Be patient. I don't know if you are in a pit and need help or if
someone you love is in that pit and you need to help them. One thing I do
know is that the purpose of the pit is to purify then restore. Right now,
surrender the broken pieces of your life to God and watch as he brings you
out of the dark. Do not quit! Do not give up! God is at work in your life.
Philippians 1:6 "And I am sure that God who began the good work within you
will keep right on helping you grow in his grace until his task within you
is finally finished on that day when Jesus Christ returns."

Let's Pray
Father God, my heart is filled with chaos and confusion. I feel as if I am
drowning in my circumstances, my heart filled with fear and confusion. I
need the strength and peace that only You can give. Right now, I choose to
rest in You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.

~TOUCHED BY OUR FEELINGS~

Our blessed Lord has been there
through the lonely valley, He has trod,
He did not fear or falter,
Jesus fulfilled the will of God.

Our Lord knows the feelings of rejection
of sorrow, death, and pain,
He gives us power to overcome
through His blessed holy name.

He's touched by the feelings
of our infirmities and grief,
even at the tomb of Lazareth
the Lord of all creation did weep.

He knows the darkest hour
in every heart across this land
by His grace that's still amazing,
God gives us the power to stand.

If you feel all alone
or think that no one cares,
just look up to the Savior,
He's promised He'll always be there.

Child of God, don't be be dismayed by feelings
or sins of the past that may come to your mind
there's no need to fear what tomorrow will bring
for Jesus lovingly says, "my child, you are mine."

Blessings In Christ,

Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that
you may know how to answer everyone. --Colossians 4:6
There was a woman once who developed a very serious throat condition. And
as a result, her doctor prescribed medication and no talking for six
months! She thought this would be almost impossible with a husband and six
children, but she obeyed the doctor's orders.
For the next six months, when she needed the attention of her children, she
blew a whistle…her instructions became written memos…and questions and
answers were written down on pads of paper she had placed around the house.
After six months, the doctor finally allowed her to talk again.
Interestingly enough, her first comments were very revealing. She said her
children had become calmer and quieter, and as a result she said, "I don't
think I'll ever shout again like I used to."
When asked about the notes, she replied, "You'd be surprised how many
hastily written notes I crumpled up and threw in the trash before I gave
them to anyone to read. Seeing my own harsh words that I would've spoken
had an effect on me that I don't think I'll ever forget."
Many things come out of our mouths before we realize it—gossip, praise,
slander, lying, and so on. The Scripture says, "No man can tame the tongue.
It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our
Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's
likeness. …My brothers [and sisters], this should not be" (James 3:8-10).
Today, make a conscious effort to think about what you say. Determine to
listen before speaking, to evaluate the words you use, and ensure your
speech doesn't hurt others (see Titus 2:6-8).

PRAYER CHALLENGE: Pray that God will help you think about what you say
today…so that only good things come out of your mouth.

VERSE:
Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he
has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has
promised to those who love him.
-- James 1:12

THOUGHT:
This beatitude comes from Jesus' brother. He had experienced it
and not just taught it! James knew it was worth "hanging in" and
"hanging on" when his faith was under attack. He affirmed that God
loves us and that he has made incredible promises about what lies
ahead for us. He knew that eventually our period of testing would
be transformed into a time of great blessing. James wants us to
know that God longs to bless us with life! After all, that's why he
sent Jesus. (cf. John 10:10)

PRAYER:
Dear LORD and Father, thank you for all those times that you
strengthened me when I was under attack and sustained me when I was
weary and ready to quit. Write "perseverance" deep within my soul
and give me a spirit of tenacity so that I might serve you no
matter what the outward circumstances of my life may be. In the
mighty name of Jesus I pray. Amen.

Yielding to His Lordship
Day 218

God is not a therapist; He is not just someone you approach to make it
through a difficult time. He is Lord and Savior. Your greatest joy
will come when you yield your whole life to Him.

"Know that you have to leave it up to Him, and you have no control
over life or death-that's what sustained me through it all," says
Gretchen, whose husband died.

When you honor Him as God, you are better able to accept the
circumstances of life.

"Woe is me for my hurt! My wound is grievous: but I said, Truly this
is a grief, and I must bear it" (Jeremiah 10:19 KJV).

Father, yielding to Your Lordship is difficult for me, but I want to
give my every thought and effort to You, not just to get me through
the rough times, but as an act of worship to You. Amen.

Why Shouldn't I Indulge
Lysa TerKeurst

"I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made." Psalm 139:14 (NIV)

God made you wonderful. Psalm 139 says so. You are beautiful and loved
just the way you are, whether you're a size zero or a size thirty.
But, if your size is a struggle or a place of defeat, God loves you so
much He doesn't want you to stay there.

There was a time when I felt utterly defeated in the area of food and
health. I knew I needed to make changes, but not because of the number
on the scale or my clothing size. I knew it because of the battle that
raged in my heart. I craved, I desired, I thought about, and arranged
my life around food.

Yet I was a Bible teacher, a woman who loved Jesus. Why couldn't I
figure this out? I had found victory in so many areas of my life, but
this area alluded me. I constantly asked, "Why shouldn't I indulge?"

One day, I looked up the definition of the word indulge, which means
to act in an unrestrained way. For me it was unrestrained eating. You
see, eating in its proper context is not the problem. God gave us food
for nourishment, strength and even celebration. The problem comes when
pleasure is unrestrained.

I had to get honest enough to admit that I relied on food more than I
relied on God. I craved food more than I craved God. Chocolate was my
comfort and deliverer. Cookies were my reward. Salty chips were my
joy. Food was what I turned to in times of stress and sadness . even
in times of happiness.

I knew it was something God was challenging me to surrender to His
control. Really surrender. Surrender to the point where I'd make
radical changes for the sake of my spiritual health-perhaps even more
than my physical health.

Part of my surrender was asking myself a really raw question. May I
ask you this same question?

Is it possible we love and rely on food more that we love and rely on God?

Now before you turn your computer off, hear me out. This question is crucial.

We have to see the purpose of our struggle with food as something more
than getting to wear smaller sizes and receive compliments. Shallow
desires produce shallow efforts. These good things are nice, but not
as appealing in the moment as a cinnamon roll, or those chips, or that
brownie.

The process of getting healthy has to be about more than just losing
weight and focusing on ourselves. It's not about adjusting our diets
and hoping for good physical results. It's about recalibrating our
souls so that we want to change for the right reasons: because we are
fearfully and wonderfully made by God. And created to live in victory,
not in defeat.

I discovered that pursuing a healthy eating plan for these very
reasons was one of the most significant spiritual journeys I'd ever
dared to take with God. Today, I invite you to journey with me.

Dear Lord, if I'm being honest with myself and You, I know sometimes I
rely on food more than I rely on You. I want to recalibrate my soul
and change for the right reasons. I want to see You in and through
this entire process. Please be with me, Lord, each day. In Jesus'
Name. Amen.

Application Steps:
There are many times when we feel utterly defeated in the area of food
and health. What little changes can you begin to make starting today?

Reflections:
The process of getting healthy has to be about more than just losing
weight and focusing on myself. It's not about adjusting my diet and
hoping for good physical results. It's about recalibrating my soul so
that I want to change for the right reasons.

Power Verses:
Ephesians 1:18-19a, "I pray that the eyes of your heart my be
enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called
you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and
his incomparably great power for us who believe." (NIV)

Skeptical Thomas
And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
—John 20:28
When we think of Jesus' disciple, Thomas, one word comes to mind: doubt.
But it would be more accurate to call Thomas a skeptic, not a doubter. And
skepticism is not always a bad thing.
It has been said that skepticism is the first step toward truth. Skepticism
is not always a sign that a person is wrong; it may be a sign that he or
she is thinking. And frankly, I think some Christians could use a little
more skepticism, because sometimes we are too quick to believe anyone or
anything that comes along.
Thomas just wanted to know for himself. He didn't live off other people's
faith, and that is admirable. Of course, we know that he missed the
appearance of Jesus when He came to the disciples. So when the disciples
saw Thomas and told him what happened, he said, "Unless I see in His hands
the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and
put my hand into His side, I will not believe" (John 20:25).
The next time the disciples met, Thomas was there. And guess who showed up?
Jesus. He invited Thomas to look at and feel His wounds. But Thomas didn't
need to. Rather, he said, "My Lord and my God!" So Thomas wasn't really a
doubter. He believed when he was presented with the facts. Thomas, the
skeptic, was a believer.
On another occasion, when Jesus had told the disciples He wanted to go to
Bethany after Lazarus had died, they thought Jesus' life was at stake (see
John 11:8). But Thomas said, "Let us also go, that we may die with Him"
(John 11:16). Thomas was willing to lay his life down for the faith, and
indeed he did. According to church tradition, Thomas died as a martyr.

Good Passage
Thurs., Jan. 12, 2012

Col 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if
anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so
you also must do. (NKJ)

Matt 6:14-15 14 "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your
heavenly Father will also forgive you.
15 "But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will
your Father forgive your trespasses. (NKJ)

Its always in season to forgive others their trespasses. We are
thankful for God's forgiveness of our sins through our Lord Jesus
Christ. In turn, we choose, with God's help, to forgive others.

May God's blessings be yours as you live for Him,

Reinhard

For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble spring
from the ground; yet man is born to trouble, as the sparks fly upward.
Snafu
Perhaps you have heard someone talk about a snafu. You probably
realized that this meant something had gone wrong, but you may not
know how the word became a part of our English language. In reality,
snafu is the first letter of each word in the phrase, "Situation
normal, all fouled up." In other words, when something goes wrong, why
be surprised? It's only normal for things to get fouled up. A snafu is
something that can be expected. It's just a part of life.
Job's circumstances, of course, predate the word snafu but not the
idea behind it. Job's friend Eliphaz recognized that "trouble" and
"man" have a natural affinity for one another. As sparks from a fire
are drawn upward by the rising heat, so trouble seems naturally drawn
to man. It reflects another adage of our time: "If something can go
wrong, it will." No matter when or where you live, snafus are going to
find you.
Christians are sometimes dismayed when things go wrong in their lives.
After all, when we trusted Jesus as our Savior, our troubles were
supposed to be over, right? Yet the truth is much different. Jesus
said, "In the world you will have tribulation" (John 16:33). That's
just a normal part of living. The apostle Peter even said, "Beloved,
do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try
you, as though some strange thing happened to you" (1 Pet. 4:12).
Snafus are not strange or out of the ordinary, even for Christians.
Perhaps you are experiencing a snafu today. Something you planned is
fouled up. Don't be surprised. Instead, turn to God. When your life
goes contrary to your expectations, He is able to give you either the
wisdom to deal with it or the grace to live with it. Trust Him.
When trouble draws close, draw close to God.

Trained to Comfort

"Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God" (Isa. 40:1).
Store up comfort. This was the prophet's mission. The world is full of
comfortless hearts, and ere thou art sufficient for this lofty
ministry, thou must be trained. And thy training is costly in the
extreme; for, to render it perfect, thou too must pass through the
same afflictions as are wringing countless hearts of tears and blood.
Thus thy own life becomes the hospital ward where thou art taught the
Divine art of comfort. Thou art wounded, that in the binding up of thy
wounds by the Great Physician, thou mayest learn how to render first
aid to the wounded everywhere. Dost thou wonder why thou art passing
through some special sorrow? Wait till ten years are passed, and thou
wilt find many others afflicted as thou art. Thou wilt tell them how
thou hast suffered and hast been comforted; then as the tale is
unfolded, and the anodynes applied which once thy God wrapped around
thee, in the eager look and the gleam of hope that shall chase the
shadow of
despair across the soul, thou shalt know why thou wast afflicted, and
bless God for the discipline that stored thy life with such a fund of
experience and helpfulness. --Selected
God does not comfort us to make us comfortable, but to make us
comforters. --Dr. Jowett

Ere I can keep and use
Its fragrance brief.
"They tell me I must break
The skylark's heart,
Ere her cage song will make
The silence start.
"They tell me love must bleed,
And friendship weep,
Ere in my deepest need
I touch that deep.

Must they be bruised and go

By caging nights, by scar

IT is a sign that the soul is living in God, if it maintain calmness
within through the consciousness of His Presence, while working for
Him in active ministrations. Such restfulness will show itself in the
commonest ways, in doing common duties at the right time, in
preserving a sweetness and evenness of temper in the midst of ordinary
interruptions and disturbances, in walking to and fro quietly on the
day's varied errands, in speaking gentle words, in sweetly meeting
unexpected calls. A calm, restful temper grows as self is learning to
lose itself in God. Such grace tells gradually on the daily life; even
the minutest detail may be brought under the power of God, and carried
out in union with Him.

Results of Backsliding
Genesis 13:1-4
Even though Abraham returned to fellowship with God, irreparable
damage had been done. When a believer backslides, he does things he
will never be able to undo.
Abraham's testimony had been weakened, and damage beyond repair had
been done to worldly Lot, Abraham's nephew. Lot had gone with Abraham
to Egypt. The backslider never backslides alone; he always takes
others with him.
Even though Abraham had backslidden and had brought about much damage,
Genesis 13:3,4 tells us that he went back "to Beth-el, unto the place
where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and Hai;
unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and
there Abram called on the name of the Lord."
God has made provision for every backslider. Just as Abraham returned
to fellowship with the Lord, you, too, can come back into fellowship
with Him if you have backslidden.
First John 2:1 says, "My little children, these things write I unto
you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the
Father, Jesus Christ the righteous."
In the first chapter of 1 John, every believer is assured: "If we
confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and
to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (v. 9).
Do not stay in the miserable place of disobedience. Come back to God
and confess your sin.
"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof
are the ways of death" (Prov. 14:12).

Persistence

Then the king arose very early in the morning, and went in haste unto
the den of lions.
We have all heard the adage "Persistence pays." There is one striking
example in Scripture, however, when persistence did more than pay. In
the case of Daniel persistence prospered.
The golden years of the Persian Empire were those of Darius the Great.
Darius extended the empire from India to the Danube River, even to
Greece itself. He also commanded his governors to aid in the
rebuilding of the Temple at Jerusalem (Ezra 6:1-12). In his desire to
rule well his kingdom, Darius set one hundred twenty princes over the
whole kingdom as vice-regents. Over these were three presidents, of
whom Daniel was the first. Daniel's prosperity as first president
evoked the jealousy of the other presidents, who sought to destroy
him. So godly was this man that the only way he could be destroyed was
through wretched trickery.
The presidents knew that Daniel would not forsake the law of his God
and therefore they proposed an unalterable decree that no one should
pray to any person other than the king for a period of thirty days.
Unaware of their vicious intent, King Darius signed the decree.
Although Daniel knew that the law had been signed, nonetheless he
continued his practice of kneeling before a window opened toward
Jerusalem and giving thanks to the Lord three times a day. His envious
colleagues laid in wait to catch Daniel forsaking the unalterable law
of the Medes and Persians. When they advised the king that Daniel had
disregarded his decree, the king was greatly distressed, for he
thought highly of Daniel. Nevertheless, he followed through on the
punishment for disobeying his decree and cast Daniel into the den of
lions. A stone was brought and laid over the mouth of the den so
Daniel could not escape. His death was inevitable.
Throughout the night the king could not sleep, nor could his mind be
soothed with music. He arose very early in the morning and went
quickly to the den of lions (Daniel 6:19). Much to his amazement,
Jehovah God had spared the life of Daniel and shut the lions' mouths.
The king was glad to receive Daniel out of the lions' den safe and
sound. After punishing those who had accused Daniel, Darius wrote a
decree to all nations that the God of Daniel should be revered and
respected as the living God.
The persistent prayer of Daniel may be viewed as a foolish practice,
given the law of the Medes and the Persians. But persistence in
godliness is never persistence in foolishness. In fact, persistence in
doing what is right always leads to prosperity.
A South Carolina man passing out tracts once stopped at a house and
rang the bell. He heard noises inside and knew that someone was in
there, but no one came to the door. He rang the bell persistently.
Finally a man appeared, grabbed the tract from his hand, and rudely
slammed the door in his face.
A week later the Christian returned to that door and this time the man
received him immediately. After he entered the house, the man took him
to the attic to see a rope dangling from the rafters with a box
beneath it. The man of the house said, "Friend, when you rang my
doorbell last week, my head was in that noose, and I was ready to
jump! But you were so persistent that I decided to go down and see who
it was. While reading your tract God spoke to me. Instead of jumping
off that box, I knelt beside it and gave my heart to the Lord."
Like Daniel of old, who was persistent in doing what is right, this
Christian's persistence in ringing that doorbell led to another man's
salvation. Regardless of what men may think, persistence in doing what
is right always brings the prosperity of God.
MORNING HYMN
Truehearted, wholehearted, faithful and loyal,
King of our lives, by Thy grace we will be;
Under the standard exalted and royal,
Strong in Thy strength we will battle for Thee.
