An Atlanta-area church recently faced an interesting dilemma. An anonymous
attender dropped a ticket into the offering plate. It was the winning
Georgia Lottery ticket worth $80,000. Such a gift would generate a variety
of opinions in many churches. But most of us would agree on this--the
secret to sustained stewardship isn't in lotteries but in Lordship.

If Jesus is Lord of all, He is Lord over our finances, expenses, and
giving. He is Lord over our income and outflow. He is Lord over our
financial involvement in His work. When we support ministries He lays on
our hearts, we're not really giving to those ministries. We're giving to
Him.

These are critical days for work and for His workers. In many places
progress is faltering for lack of funds. Perhaps too many Christians are
overspending on themselves when they should be economizing for the kingdom.
The cause of Christ isn't going to be advanced by lottery tickets or lavish
lifestyles, but by the faithfulness of those who proclaim Him Lord of all.

Giving is an act of worship, and so every worshipper must be one of God's
givers, whether rich or poor. The mites God values as much as the millions.

God Is Our Loving Father
Luke 15:11-24
Humanity tends to project its own faulty habits onto God. This is
especially true regarding the nature of His love. We think we must barter,
plead, or try hard to earn the Lord's favor. But as the prodigal son
learned, the Father's love is unconditional.
The wayward son expected his father's love to be diminished. Therefore, he
went home hoping for a place among the family servants. Imagine the boy's
delight when Dad greeted him with a hug and a celebration. His actions
certainly didn't merit an outpouring of affection, but Jesus' parable is
all about a Father who doesn't give people what they deserve.

A love based on conduct would keep people guessing, Have I done enough?
Instead, God cares for you simply because you're you, and He expects
nothing in return. Consider the prodigal's life after his homecoming party.
He didn't move into the servants' quarters and get to work. He was
reinstated to his place as the second son of a wealthy man, with all of the
privilege that entails. In the same way, believers are the Lord's cherished
children (2 Cor. 6:18). When God looks at His loved ones, He doesn't focus
upon past failures, faults, or sin. He sees the heirs to His kingdom—men
and women who love Him and desire to spend eternity in His presence.
No matter how far we may wander from the Lord's perfect will for our lives,
we are always welcome back. The Bible teaches that God's love cannot be
lost, regardless of sin or poor decisions (though we may have to live with
the consequences). Our Father's arms are always open.

The Swoon Theory
For reading & meditation: Acts 2:29-41
"God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the
fact." (v. 32)
Let us pursue the question we asked yesterday: What exactly do we mean
by resurrection? Some try to explain the resurrection as resuscitation
- the return to life from apparent death. Those holding this view
subscribe to what is called "The Swoon Theory." There are two forms of
this theory. One maintains that Jesus did not die but fainted on the
cross and returned to consciousness when He was laid on the cold rock
of the tomb. The other claims that after drinking the wine vinegar
that was given to Him when He cried "I am thirsty," He fell into a
stupor so deep that it was mistaken for death. But clearly our Lord
actually died. The Gospels provide us with medical evidence for the
fact. One of the soldiers pierced His side and there came forth "blood
and water" (John 19:34). A doctor commenting on this says: "The
pericardium (the sac around the heart) was punctured and the colorless
fluid flowing from the wound proves that life would have been
extinct."
Was it really a convalescent Christ the disciples encountered on that
first Easter Day? Could such a pathetic and powerless figure have
convinced them that He had conquered death and was alive forevermore?
No, the Master, as it were, had flung from His face the mask of death,
and laid down in the hearts and minds of His disciples an impression
that stayed with them throughout the whole of their ministry. He who
had been dead was now alive - gloriously and resplendently.

Prayer:
O Father, You whose very nature is truth, would You foist upon us a
lie and have us believe Your Son rose from the dead when He did not? I
cannot believe it. The life by which I live is resurrection life. I
cannot be alive in someone who is dead. Amen.

He Tends His Flock
"He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms
and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have
young." Isaiah 40:11

What a shepherd we have! He lovingly and diligently watches over us.
When we are hungry he seeks out green pastures for us. We are
dependent on Him to find those pastures for us. When we are thirsty,
he finds the safe, still waters for us to drink. He will let no harm
come to us. But we must keep our eyes on our Shepherd if we are to
follow Him to the green pastures and the still waters. He provides
just what we need for the moment, but without Him we will starve or
lose our way. "No matter how difficult, how narrow, or how treacherous
the path, I've walked it first," says Jesus. "I always go before My
sheep." Like sheep, we can't tell the difference between the dangerous
cliff or the safe path. We cannot distinguish between the deadly
floodwaters of the wadis and the quiet pools. Only the Shepherd can
lead us away from those deadly waters that will destroy us to the
refreshing waters that will give us life. When He must take us from
the green
pastures through the dark valleys of life, He will stoop and gently
lift up the weariest of His little ones and carry them close to His
heart through the frightening shadow lands. It is in the warmth of His
arms that we know we are safe. Though darkness overtakes us, no harm
can come to us because we find ourselves in the arms of our precious
Shepherd.
Oh, heavenly Shepherd, thank you for leading us through this life.
Thank you for safely leading us to green pastures and to still waters.
Thank you for carrying us when we are too weary to walk any more. May
we always listen for your voice and follow you wherever you lead us
that one day we might live with you for all eternity! Amen

It would be nice if God let us order life like we order a meal.
"I'll take good health and a high IQ, please!"

Would've been nice. But it didn't happen. When it came to your life
on earth, you weren't given a voice or a vote. But when it comes to
life after death, you were!

Have you been given any greater privilege than that of choice? You've
made some bad choices in life, haven't you? You've chosen the wrong
friends, maybe the wrong career, even the wrong spouse. You say, "If
only… if only I could make up for those bad choices."

You can! One good choice for eternity offsets a thousand bad ones on earth
The choice is yours!

For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto
all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which
is to come.


There is an old adage that says, 'Don't put the cart before the
horse.' Many people try to lose weight without a specific goal in
mind. Often people set a goal that is unrealistic. In our attempts to
become more mature as Christians, we grow a little at a time. God
doesn't expect us to be perfect right away. He knows that our growth
takes time. The same is true of our attempts to lose weight. We need
to take it a little at a time. Crash diets and heavy exercise programs
are not the way to go. Our Christian growth should provide us with an
example. Let us approach our diets with patience and take it a small
step at a time.

Today's thought: Dieting is easier if we try to lose weight little by little.

The Effect Your Name Has - #6521

If you really want to impress somebody, remember their name after you
meet them. It's important, you know, to concentrate on somebody's name
and then try to repeat it several times in the conversation, "Yes,
George. It's nice to meet you, George, and say hi to your family,
George." Because, see, there's nothing someone would rather hear than
their own name. And they'll just think you're something really special
if you can remember that name, because names are really important to
people.
In fact, names are so important in our society that they're protected
by slander and liable laws. If someone publicly damages your name, and
it's something that isn't true and that they can't really defend, well
that could be worth millions of dollars in a lawsuit. Your name is
really important!
Now, here's something to think about: what kind of reaction does your
name bring when it's brought up in a group of people? Maybe a group of
people who know who you are, maybe a little, maybe a lot, but you're
not in the room when your name comes up. What's the reaction? See, I'm
sure that it makes people feel some way!
Maybe there's laughter when they think of your name, or maybe there's
respect. Maybe there's like a shrug of the shoulders, "I don't know."
Maybe it creates suspicion when they hear you're involved, or maybe
there's tension, or maybe there's peace, confidence. Your name gets a
reaction.
I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "The
Effect Your Name Has."
Our word for today from the Word of God is about your name. Proverbs
22:1 says this: "A good name is more desirable than great riches. To
be esteemed is better than silver or gold." When the Bible talks about
your name, it's really talking about your reputation. What kind of
reaction does your name or your reputation bring?
Interesting thing about reputation, a good one takes a long time to
get and a very short time to lose. And as you know, a bad reputation
is very easy to get, and then later on it can be very hard to lose. In
fact, I've known people with a wonderful reputation - years that it
took to build - and in a night, or a day, in one incident a reputation
is lost. It's worth much sacrifice; it's worth a lot of self-denial; a
lot of self-discipline to protect your good name. It's the most
valuable thing you have. That's why our society protects it with laws.
I think a good name, like the Bible talks about here, belongs to
people that you can always expect certain things from. See how you
measure up with this check list. First of all, you can always expect
excellence in what they do. You don't have to wonder if it's going to
be shoddy work or if they're going to give it a half-hearted effort.
Excellence - they're committed to doing it in the big things and the
little things. That's a good name.
Secondly, people with a good name cause people to expect consistency
from them; they're faithful, they deliver. You know they'll be there,
they'll have the same kind of quality, the same kind of commitment
whether things are going bad, or whether they're going well, or
whether things are hard or easy, or whether there's money or not;
there's going to be consistency. That's a good name.
Thirdly, they're known for their judgment. They don't just jump into
things; they're not impulsive, they're not glandular people, they
ponder, they consider, they get the facts and they make responsible
decisions that stand the test of time, not that just look good for a
day, a week, or a month. And then a good name, well, I think it
belongs to people who are known for the truth, for integrity. You can
always believe, you can always trust what they're saying; you don't
have to divide it by two and try to get the truth or wonder if it's
really the facts. You can trust their word.
Your good name? Man, it's worth everything. Don't compromise it. Don't
put a mark on anyone else's name either, because according to the
Bible, if you've got a good name, you're a moral millionaire.

"I will be their God."-Jeremiah 31:33

Christian! here is all thou canst require. To make thee happy thou wantest
something that shall satisfy thee; and is not this enough? If thou canst
pour this promise into thy cup, wilt thou not say, with David, "My cup
runneth over; I have more than heart can wish"? When this is fulfilled, "I
am thy God," art thou not possessor of all things? Desire is insatiable as
death, but He who filleth all in all can fill it. The capacity of our
wishes who can measure? but the immeasurable wealth of God can more than
overflow it. I ask thee if thou art not complete when God is thine? Dost
thou want anything but God? Is not His all-sufficiency enough to satisfy
thee if all else should fail? But thou wantest more than quiet
satisfaction; thou desirest rapturous delight. Come, soul, here is music
fit for heaven in this thy portion, for God is the Maker of Heaven. Not all
the music blown from sweet instruments, or drawn from living strings, can
yield such melody as this sweet promise, "I !
will be their God." Here is a deep sea of bliss, a shoreless ocean of
delight; come, bathe thy spirit in it; swim an age, and thou shalt find no
shore; dive throughout eternity, and thou shalt find no bottom. "I will be
their God." If this do not make thine eyes sparkle, and thy heart beat high
with bliss, then assuredly thy soul is not in a healthy state. But thou
wantest more than present delights-thou cravest something concerning which
thou mayest exercise hope; and what more canst thou hope for than the
fulfillment of this great promise, "I will be their God"? This is the
masterpiece of all the promises; its enjoyment makes a heaven below, and
will make a heaven above. Dwell in the light of thy Lord, and let thy soul
be always ravished with His love. Get out the marrow and fatness which this
portion yields thee. Live up to thy privileges, and rejoice with
unspeakable joy.

"Serve the Lord with gladness."-Psalm 100:2

Delight in divine service is a token of acceptance. Those who serve God
with a sad countenance, because they do what is unpleasant to them, are not
serving Him at all; they bring the form of homage, but the life is absent.
Our God requires no slaves to grace His throne; He is the Lord of the
empire of love, and would have His servants dressed in the livery of joy.
The angels of God serve Him with songs, not with groans; a murmur or a sigh
would be a mutiny in their ranks. That obedience which is not voluntary is
disobedience, for the Lord looketh at the heart, and if He seeth that we
serve Him from force, and not because we love Him, He will reject our
offering. Service coupled with cheerfulness is heart-service, and therefore
true. Take away joyful willingness from the Christian, and you have removed
the test of his sincerity. If a man be driven to battle, he is no patriot;
but he who marches into the fray with flashing eye and beaming face,
singing, "It is sweet for one's !
country to die," proves himself to be sincere in his patriotism.
Cheerfulness is the support of our strength; in the joy of the Lord are we
strong. It acts as the remover of difficulties. It is to our service what
oil is to the wheels of a railway carriage. Without oil the axle soon grows
hot, and accidents occur; and if there be not a holy cheerfulness to oil
our wheels, our spirits will be clogged with weariness. The man who is
cheerful in his service of God, proves that obedience is his element; he
can sing,

"Make me to walk in Thy commands,
'Tis a delightful road."

Reader, let us put this question-do you serve the Lord with gladness? Let
us show to the people of the world, who think our religion to be slavery,
that it is to us a delight and a joy! Let our gladness proclaim that we
serve a good Master.

Having full confidence in God's Word
January 9, 2012
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for
reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the
man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Many people today love to question the Bible's authenticity. But
really, there are only three possibilities when you consider Jesus
Christ and His belief in the Bible.
One possibility is that errors existed in the Bible and Jesus didn't
know it… that He was a man of His times and just didn't have the
scientific and theological knowledge of our scholars today. Of course,
if you choose that possibility, you're faced with the fact that Jesus
Christ—who is God—had no knowledge of the errors that supposedly were
contained in the Scriptures. How can God not know His own word?
The second possibility is that there were errors in the Bible and
Jesus knew about the errors, but said nothing about it and covered it
up. But if you accept that explanation, you're dealing with the issue
of the truthfulness and the integrity of Jesus Himself, which I don't
think is a good road to travel!
The third option is that the Bible is inerrant. When you look at these
three options, that's really the only one that makes sense. So as you
read the Scriptures, remember that you can have full confidence in the
authority of the Word of God!

AS YOU READ THE SCRIPTURES, REMEMBER THAT JESUS RECOGNIZED THE BIBLE'S
AUTHORITY AND BECAUSE OF THAT, YOU CAN HAVE FULL CONFIDENCE IN IT!

Gaining by Giving

The liberal soul shall be made fat. (Proverbs 11:25)
If I desire to flourish in soul, I must not hoard up my stores but
must distribute to the poor. To be close and niggardly is the world's
way to prosperity, but it is not God's way, for He saith, "There is
that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and there is that withholdeth
more than is meet, and it tendeth to poverty." Faith's way of gaining
is giving. I must try this again and again, and I may expect that as
much of prosperity as will be good for me will carne to me as a
gracious reward for a liberal course of action.
Of course, I may not be sure of growing rich. I shall be fat but not
too fat. Too great riches might make me as unwieldy as corpulent
persons usually are and cause me the dyspepsia of worldliness, and
perhaps bring on a fatty degeneration of the heart. No, if I am fat
enough to be healthy, I may well be satisfied; and if the Lord grants
me a competence, I may be thoroughly content.
But there is a mental and spiritual fatness which I would greatly
covet, and this comes as the result of generous thoughts toward my
God, His church, and my fellow men. Let me not stint, lest I starve my
heart. Let me be bountiful and liberal, for so shall I be like my
Lord. He gave Himself for me; shall I grudge Him anything?

GRUMBLE!
Ephesians 5:19-20
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and
make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the
Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My wife, Joyce, was watching something on TV recently. The question
was asked, "What do people do about 70 times a day?" The answer was,
they complain. Isn't that amazing? With all of the blessings we have
surrounding us, we complain an average of seventy times a day.

Some people feel that they have an obligation to complain because
that's the only thing they are good at. If the only thing we are good
at is complaining, we need to go back to the Word of God and find real
purpose in life.

Our family has experienced a small degree of suffering and have always
found the Lord to be near and dear during these. Others who have
suffered even greater than we have and turned it over to the Lord have
become sweeter and have a greater testimony as a result of the ordeal.

I think the answer may be where we focus our gaze. Are we looking at
the situation or are we looking at the Savior? Are we focused on what
we do not have rather than what we do have? Do we grumble or are we
grateful? May others see Jesus in us as we walk day by day.

Blessings dear hearts. Walk with God today, trust Him completely and
be a blessing.

Psalm 4:1
Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness: thou hast enlarged me
when I was in distress; have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer.
Jeffrey was a quiet man; so quiet, in fact, that many people forget
that he was around. He rode the train into New York every morning with
the same crowd of people, never speaking to anyone, sitting alone at
the back of the car. One morning a man a few rows up began to choke on
a roll he was eating. In a flash, Jeffrey jumped to the man's aid,
grabbing him and dislodging the piece of roll. All of the riders were
amazed that the quiet man from the back of the train had been able to
come forward in a time of emergency.
We are all capable of great things in time of distress. The Lord gives
to His children the ability to serve one another, even so much as to
save another life. It is important that we continually pray for God to
guide our actions and show us ways to serve. When we open ourselves to
the will of God, we will be surprised at the wonderful things we can
do.

My child, you are my child, saved by My grace of which you have
received, and I take joy in calling My children, child of Mine but
those not willing to accept Me do not partake of My grace even though
it is free unto all. They do not have a Father child relationship with
Me. It is as one who would die of thirst when much water is at his
disposal waiting for him to quench his thirst. Those that refuse Me
refuses eternal life with God in heavenly places. Wherever God is
will be heavenly for all the glory is of God and for God.
My children, I have very much to teach My people and all that are
willing will learn much. How ignorant is one that rejects Christ
because he understands Him not for no one can know Him personally
unless he is born of the Spirit of God. His ways are past finding
out, but those who know Him will seek Him. There is a great change in
one born of the Spirit for he is no longer what he once was for God is
with him and the Father will not forsake those who are born of Him.
Some do not like to receive much speaking so therefore I seek to have
a short visitation with you and that often. I love one as well as
another and I desire all to sit at My footstool of rest or to journey
in My footsteps and follow Me for I shall not consider leading one
astray but there is one seeking your heart that he might lead you
astray and from My pathway. The Father is keen of sight and will draw
His children back to Himself for I will not let satan rob Me of My joy
and My glory. I seek to keep My people in perfect understand and a
perfect love. Love one another as I have loved you and pray
continuously for those who are needing prayer and you will never meet
any face to face that isn't in much need of prayer for all was in need
of a Savior and My saving grace avails for all who will come to Me
seeking. Seek and you shall find.

There are two attitudes in which our will should be given to God.

First, we should have the surrendered will. This is where we must all
begin, by yielding up to God our natural will and having Him possess
it.

But next, He wants us to have the victorious will. As soon as He
receives our will in honest surrender, He wants to put His will into
it and make it stronger than ever for Him. It is hence-forth no longer
our will, but His will. And having yielded to His choice and placed
itself under His direction, He wants to put into it all the strength
and intensity of His own great will and make us positive, forceful,
victorious and unmovable-even as Himself.

Not my will, but thine, be done (Luke 22:42). That is the first step.
Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me
(John 17:24). That is the second attitude. Both are divine; both are
right; both are necessary to our right living and successful working
for God.

Scripture
Not as I will but as thou wilt (Matt. 26:39). To will and to do of his
good pleasure—Philippians 2:13

Reflection

What a breath of fresh air! As Christians, we have the privilege to
partake of the beautiful peace through the love of our merciful God.
Praise Him! Christ has conquered sin and death! Indeed, let not our
hearts be troubled, but let us take joy in the glory of Christ.

Being Blameless and Holy


1 Thessalonians 3:13: May he strengthen your hearts so that you will
be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our
Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.

We need to have strong hearts now in order to be blameless and holy
then. This is why Paul prays in Ephesians 4:16-17 that God "may
strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so
that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith." Nothing is
stronger than Christ dwelling in our hearts.

Living as Relatives to Humankind

We human beings were made for each other, and what any of us is doing
at any time cannot be a matter of indifference to the rest of us. On
the human plane all men are brothers. The Son of Man never denied this
sweet tie with humankind. Over a stubborn and sinful Jerusalem He
frankly shed tears and, in the hour of death, prayed for men who were
so blind as to nail their God on a tree. And Paul, who burned always
to be like his Lord, wept over the unbelieving Israel with an anguish
that goaded him to an utterance so daring as to cause the ages to
wonder: "I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. For
I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my
kinsmen according to the flesh." Peace of heart that is won by
refusing to bear the common yoke of human sympathy is a peace unworthy
of a Christian. To seek tranquility by stopping our ears to the cries
of human pain is to make ourselves not Christians but a kind of
degenerate stoic having no relation either to stoicism or
Christianity. We Christians should never try to escape from the
burdens and woes of life among men. The hermit and the anchorite sound
good in poetry, but stripped of their artificial romance, they are not
good examples of what the followers of Christ should be. True peace
comes not by a retreat from the world but by the overpowering presence
of Christ in the heart. "Christ in you" is the answer to our cry for
peace. The Salvation Army lassie distributing gospel literature in a
saloon is a better example of the separated life than a prim and
cold-faced saint who has long ago fled the world to take refuge in the
barren caverns of her soul.

Verse
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand
slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but
everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9

Thought
The Lord does not want anyone to perish. Do I? Do I care enough to
pray and to reach out in His name?

Prayer
Father, to the extent I can bear it, will you enable me to see people
as You see them.
