WISE COUNSEL - Ruth 3:5 NIV

"I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered.

When Naomi told Ruth to go lie at Boaz' feet, it probably sounded as strange
to her as it does to us when we read it today. She wasn't an Israelite.
She wasn't familiar with Jewish law and tradition. But she was familiar
with Naomi. She knew her well. so well that her deep love for the older
woman had caused her to reject a life of safety by going back to her family,
and to remain with Naomi, no matter what.

Naomi had never led Ruth the wrong way. She'd never given her bad advice.
Ruth obviously saw Naomi as a wise counselor. someone she could depend upon,
no matter what, to give her good advice that would lead to a good outcome.
So, even though what Naomi told Ruth to do sounded not only odd, but
possibly a bit frightening, she did it anyway. "I will do whatever you say."
That statement alone shows how much confidence Ruth had in Naomi. And it
was good that she had such confidence, because the outcome was even greater
than even Naomi could have imagined. with Ruth not only having a wonderful
marriage to a loving and wealthy husband, but it resulted in her becoming
one of the ancestors not only of King David, but of Jesus Himself!

We all need a wise counselor. someone we can go to with questions we can't
seem to find answers to through prayer and Bible study. I have such a
person - a woman who has her head in heaven and her feet on the ground. a
woman who literally glows Jesus with her every word and action. a woman
whose advice has never failed me in the 27 years I've known her. a woman who
has taught me more about Jesus just by living her faith than anyone else
I've known. Her name is Betty, and she's one of my life's greatest
treasures. I always know I'll get wise counsel when I go to her with
questions. even when she's wise enough to say, "I don't know. let's ask
_____" (someone else she knows will have the answer she doesn't have).

J.R. had such a person in his life, too. but his wise counselor went to be
with the Lord some time ago. What does J.R. do now? He seeks counsel from
MY wise counselor, because he knows, as I do, that she's just as wise in her
answers to him as she has always been with me!

Who do you go to when you need answers to questions you can't find the
answers to through prayer and Bible study? Is there a wise counselor in
your life? If so, praise God for that person every day. If not, then seek
someone, making sure that the person you choose is deeply grounded in God's
word and living a life that reflects the wise counsel you know you're
seeking.

".let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get
guidance." Proverbs 1:5 NI
