AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE -- Joshua 24:15 NIV
But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves
this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served
beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living.
But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.
Joshua was willing to take a stand. He was willing to be the example. He
was willing to be the living, breathing, walking picture of what it meant to
serve the Lord.
That's not an easy commitment to make - at least not if you take it
seriously. So many people call themselves "Christian", but they leave out
two very important ingredients - Jesus is the first, and the second is a
life that reflects who Jesus is.
Joshua's life was a shining example of a man of God. Everything he did and
said reflected his faith. He took a definite stand and he never wavered
from it.
The moment a person says, "I am a Christian," he is taking a stand. If he
is going to assume the title, he must also be willing to make a commitment
to live a life that reflects that title. If he wants to reap all the
blessings promised by our Lord, he must be willing to live a life that is
guided by the Spirit of our Lord.
So how is your life? If you were arrested for being a Christian, would you
be convicted in court? Or would they even have enough grounds to arrest
you, much less convict you? Is your life being guided by the Spirit of God
- or by the other spirits that inhabit this world? Do those around you who
don't personally know Jesus have any inkling of who He is by watching you?
We're not just talking about the big things. We're talking about the little
things, too. If a pay phone suddenly dumped ten dollars worth of change
into your hands, what would you do with it? How many personal copies do you
make on the copy machine at work without paying for them? If you knew you
could cheat on your income tax and not get caught, would you do it? How
often do you talk about other people in a way you wouldn't want repeated to
them?
Think about it. Examine your life today. Your life, moment by moment, is a
living example... of what?
