Celebration!
Dear Subscribers,
I wanted to send you this message so that you could share in our joy and
excitement. On Monday, June 21st, David Owusu became our first
ministry-supported, four-year degree graduate in Ghana, West Africa. I
share this with you because you, as financial supporters of Dogwood
Ministries, have helped to make David's graduation possible.
David is one of the young students that the ministry has been helping to
support. Your gifts have helped to make his graduation possible. So many
of you are so generous, and so seldom ask what the ministry is doing with
your gifts. This is just one place where we're able to help -- with the
education of these special young people who will go on serving God long
after many of us are gone. So, what you've made possible is a living gift.
David is so very special. He has distinguished himself many times during
his education, working locally with young people, as well as addressing the
United Nations in his country. Please be sure to check our web page after
the weekend. (www.dogwoodministries.org) we hope to have some pictures of
David in his cap and gown, along with a few of the many pictures he's sent
us showing him speaking to groups and working with individuals over the past
four years.
We need so many, many more like David, and Dogwood Ministries is dedicated
to helping as many as we possibly can. These young people work very hard
and sacrifice greatly to get their education. Your financial gifts continue
to make it possible for us to help. Thank you so very much.
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust
destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves
do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart
will be also." Matthew 6:19-21 NIV
God bless you all,
J.R.
P.S. As with every Friday, our weekly budget report is at the end of
today's devotional.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ASK FOR... YOU MAY GET IT! -- Joshua 23:12-16 NIV
"But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these
nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate
with them, then you may be sure that the LORD your God will no longer drive
out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for
you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this
good land, which the LORD your God has given you.
"Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart
and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you
has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed. But just
as every good promise of the LORD your God has come true, so the LORD will
bring on you all the evil he has threatened, until he has destroyed you from
this good land he has given you. If you violate the covenant of the LORD
your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down
to them, the LORD's anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish
from the good land he has given you."
Joshua was making a frightening prediction here. He was telling the people
this. The Lord has been good to you. He's given you this wonderful land
for your own. He has driven out your enemies for you. He has wrapped up
this wonderful gift and handed it to you. But He has also placed certain
restrictions on you. He has told you to throw out the pagans. He has told
you to burn all their idols. He has told you to sterilize the land, to
remove the infection of sin and to follow only Him.
But Joshua knew the people. He knew how quick they were to forget. He also
knew how really stupid they could be. So he warned them... "Folks, if you
ignore me... if you insist on doing things your own way... let me tell you
this. God is patient. He has had infinite patience with you. But after a
while, even the Lord gets fed up. So if you keep insisting that you want to
do things your way... God is going to give you your way! And guess what!
It's not a pretty picture. 'Snares.' 'Traps...' 'Whips on your backs and
thorns in your eyes...' These are not pleasant thoughts. So pay attention
to what I'm saying!"
Unlike you and me, the Lord keeps ALL of His promises. All of them. even
the ones we don't like. That's what Joshua said here. The Lord had kept
every one of His promises to the people, and He would also keep this one...
If they insisted on doing things their way, the Lord would bring on them all
the evil He had threatened! And guess what? Later on, that's exactly what
the Lord did. because Israel kept insisting on doing things its own way.
God doesn't change. He still loves you and me more than we can imagine.
And He still has infinite patience with His people. But He also has His
limits. Be careful about demanding your own way. You may just get it.
