The Princess of Disks

A young woman indicated by the Princess of Disks would be a quiet,
reserved person - sometimes shy. She will be practical and capable,
though rarely seeking the limelight. I used to know a stage manager
who always came up as a Princess of Disks - she loved the glitz of the
theatre as long as she could stay behind the scenes - having, of
course, created them first!

She's a gentle person who, like the Queen of Disks, is much concerned
with domestic matters, and with Nature and growth. As a result,
sometimes when this card comes up we may be looking at somebody who is
expecting a child. The Princess of Cups often represents conception,
the Princess of Disks shows the pregnancy and the Ace of Wands will
then indicate the birth.

The Princess of Disks woman is a reliable and diligent person,
trustworthy and hard-working. She is faithful by nature, and deals
badly with conflict. She likes life to unfolds in an ordered fashion.
In fact, she contemplates life very thoroughly, being sensitive to the
needs of others, and sympathetic to their feelings.

Despite her quiet exterior, she has a huge resource of strength and
support to offer to those who need it. She is also an excellent
practical manager with marked proficiency in dealing with money and
accounting. This will, however, generally be expressed in the home
environment where she is at her most content.

When the card comes up to indicate a period in somebody's life, rather
than the person herself, we will be looking at a young woman on the
threshold - of life, marriage, motherhood, though rarely on the
threshold of some major career ambition. That step would be more
readily indicated by the Princess of Wands.

Working with the Princess of Disks

This card is one with a great deal of hidden strength and power within
it, which promises new growth, big changes and new beginnings,
accompanied by the inner reserves to make the best of those
influences.

A day ruled by this Princess is one on which financial matters will
usually work well, and where you may quite possibly receive good news
regarding money and wealth. Pay special attention to ideas you have
during a day like this, and be prepared to think them through and act
on them as soon as the time is right.

Keep firmly in touch with everyday life, but listen for the whispers
of intuition which are sparked by part of the Princess's inner power.
This is a day to be well-earthed, but to walk with your head among the
stars.

The Princess of Disks has a hidden title - the rose of the Palace of
Earth. And here we find the deepest spiritual aspects of her
influence. The Palace of Earth is the planet, and the rose is
connected symbolically to the rosa mundi, the Rose of the World - a
symbol of resurrection and eternal life.

Thus this card touches upon the most important issues about being in
love with life - its creation, its experience, its excitement and
promise of fulfilment. When we are able to enjoy each passing minute
of our lives, we put ourselves in touch with the mighty and empowering
forces of love which flow through the Cosmos at all times. We become
more deeply aware of the creative force of the goddess, and more in
touch with our own inner vitality and life force.

Affirmation: I now welcome fresh growth and renewal into my life.

PAGE OF PENTACLES

Attribution - Earth of Earth; Capricorn

Pages can represent both boys and girls from a young age to
adolescence, but usually represents a message or a messenger. He
brings news to the querent and if this card is reversed it can mean
that no news is forthcoming or that it is delayed.

The suit of Pentacles represents the element earth. This is the suit
through which we can appreciate what we have been given and it shows
how we experience the external world.

Pentacles can represent money matters, resources, security, material
concerns, prosperity, wealth, service, status, and physical
experiences in the body.

Rider-Waite Imagery

The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite (1911)

A youthful figure, looking intently at the pentacle which hovers over
his raised hands. He moves slowly, insensible of that which is about
him.

Divinatory Meanings

Upright: Application, study, scholarship, reflection another reading
says news, messages and the bringer thereof; also rule, management.

Reversed: Prodigality, dissipation, liberality, luxury; unfavourable news.

UPRIGHT

A messenger will bring good news.

Young student eager to learn; a thirst for knowledge.

A quiet, shy child.

Exploration of spaces and places.

Inventive mind.

A diligent guardian who watches over you.

Visions, omens, premonitions.

Messages come to you by non-material means – you have a "gut" feeling
about something.

Card of the psychic.

This card also represents the perpetual and dedicated student. He is
capable of deep concentration and applies his knowledge diligently.

Quick to learn but rather overly thorough about facts and figures.

New professional and financial developments, good news about money.

Using common sense, having practical attitudes.

Dependable, responsible, conservative.

Write letters and make phone calls. It is a good day to communicate.

The Page of Pentacles is a spiritual young man. He is genuinely awed
by the fact of his mere physical existence and reveres the world that
surrounds him. This is the card of wonder.

REVERSED

Uncharacteristically rushing your research or planning.

One who opposes new ideas.

Close-minded.

A stubborn child who resists all discipline or control.

Rebelliousness.

Fickle.

Too serious.

Non-conformity leading to adverse social criticism (hippie)

Doing too much of your own thing will cause problems.

Take your nose out of a book!

Overly tolerant attitudes.

Someone is taking too much for granted.

Circumstances are one-sided.

Dealing with issues on a private, inner level.

Taking risks with some things that have always made you feel safe in the past.

Let go of perfectionism.

Superficial knowledge.

Shoddy performance, difficulties with a contract.

Wastefulness, extravagance, pettiness.

GENERAL MEANING: This card is traditionally entitled the Page, but in
some modern decks appears as a Princess. This card's energy has to do
with learning about compound interest and abundance. Her attention is
focused on learning the natural laws that pertain to natural
synergies.

Whether the learning is about growing vegetables, the stock market or
culturing new medicines in the lab, this Page wants to understand the
underlying mechanism that supports the creation of results and
abundance.

You may see this person in the position of the attendant or junior
partner, but that is only a current appearance. That demeanor of
humility or servitude will soon enough disappear, as her sense of
mastery increases. By studying the example of those around her,
successful and unsuccessful, she is building a game plan that will
lift her from obscurity and make her successful in her own right. She
just has to collect the necessary education and experience, which she
is doing right now. (Tarot.com)

Page of Pentacles - Astrocenter.com

Description: The Page of Pentacles is a messenger of new openings that
promise improvement, security, confidence, or the chance to make your
dreams real. When such opportunities present themselves, grab them.
They will likely entail significant increases in social status. This
card can indicate financial dealings, new and important friendships,
study, scholarship, or a fascination with work. He indicates all
different avenues of moving ahead in a practical manner. This Page is
both happy and optimistic, and thoughtful and serious, seemingly
opposite traits, but merely two sides of the same coin. While he can
represent situations, he can also indicate the presence of a person
with these traits. This is apt to be someone who will prove very
helpful.

In the reversed position, this card symbolizes a façade. This can
indicate that situations that appear successful or dependable are
actually the opposite, or it can indicate that a person will be on the
scene. This person, however well-meaning, is not going to help the
situation. Stay clear. What they really are capable of is a far cry
from reality.

Wordsmith.org The Magic of Words

Feb 13, 2012

This week's theme

Words coined after gods and goddesses

This week's words

promethean

Prometheus brings fire to mankind

Prometheus brings fire to mankind

Art: Heinrich Füger (1751-1818)

A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg

Ralph Waldo Emerson summed it up well when he said, "The religion of
one age is the literary entertainment of the next." At one time there
were magnificent temples of Apollo and Zeus, people prayed to them,
made offerings to them.

Today no one believes that those gods and goddesses were anything but
figments of ancient people's imagination. Today we learn about these
gods as part of myths.

All these ancient deities are history now, but they have left their
mark on the language. This week we'll look at five words that are
derived from the names of gods and goddesses. I could say mythological
gods and goddesses, but then I'd be repeating myself.

...................................

Waiter, there's a god in my language!

I'll be speaking on god and language at the Northwest Freethought
Conference in Seattle this March. Come say hello and you'll get to
hear Richard Dawkins among other speakers. See details.

...................................

Promethean

PRONUNCIATION:

(pruh-MEE-thee-uhn)

MEANING:

adjective: Boldly creative; defiant; audacious.

noun: A person who is boldly creative or defiantly original.

ETYMOLOGY:

After Prometheus, a demigod in Greek mythology. He made man from clay,
stole fire from Zeus by trickery, and gave it to humans. For his crime
he was chained to a rock and an eagle devoured his liver to have it
grow again to be eaten again the next day. The name means forethinker,
from Greek pro- (before) + manthanein (to learn). Earliest documented
use: 1594.

USAGE:

"A Promethean impulse lives on in the financial markets, where
quantitative investors hubristically strive to invent and speculate
beyond their capacity to understand."

Ben Wright; Fear, Frankenstein and the Rise of the Machines; Financial
News (London, UK); Oct 10, 2011.

A THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Habit with him was all the test of truth, / It must be right: I've
done it from my youth. - George Crabbe, poet and naturalist
(1754-1832)

The worthless word for the day is: decorticate

[fr. L. decorticare, to remove the bark from]

1) to remove the bark or outer layer; peel

2) to remove the outer layer or covering (of an organ or structure)

"He said he'd once used the device to partially decorticate a meth
dealer who'd been bothering Mr. Aaron."
