TRANSLATION

While carried by the constables of Yamarāja, he is overwhelmed and trembles
in their hands. While passing on the road he is bitten by dogs, and he can
remember the sinful activities of his life. He is thus terribly distressed.

PURPORT

It appears from this verse that while passing from this planet to the planet
of Yamarāja, the culprit arrested by Yamarāja's constables meets many dogs,
which bark and bite just to remind him of his criminal activities of sense
gratification. It is said in Bhagavad-gītā <http://vedabase.net/g/gita> that
one becomes almost blind and is bereft of all sense when he is infuriated by
the desire for sense gratification. He forgets everything. Kāmais tais tair
hṛta <http://vedabase.net/h/hrta> jñānāḥ <http://vedabase.net/j/jnanah> [Bg.
7.20 <http://vedabase.net/bg/7/20/en>]. One is bereft of all intelligence
when he is too attracted by sense gratification, and he forgets that he has
to suffer the consequences also. Here the chance for recounting his
activities of sense gratification is given by the dogs engaged by Yamarāja.
While we live in the gross body, such activities of sense gratification are
encouraged even by modern government regulations. In every state all over
the world, such activities are encouraged by the government in the form of
birth control. Women are supplied pills, and they are allowed to go to a
clinical laboratory to get assistance for abortions. This is going on as a
result of sense gratification. Actually sex life is meant for begetting a
good child, but because people have no control over the senses and there is
no institution to train them to control the senses, the poor fellows fall
victim to the criminal offenses of sense gratification, and they are
punished after death as described in these pages of
Śrīmad<http://vedabase.net/s/srimad>
-Bhāgavatam <http://vedabase.net/b/bhagavatam>.

Under the scorching sun, the criminal has to pass through roads of hot sand
with forest fires on both sides. He is whipped on the back by the constables
because of his inability to walk, and he is afflicted by hunger and thirst,
but unfortunately there is no drinking water, no shelter and no place for
rest on the road. While passing on that road to the abode of Yamarāja, he
falls down in fatigue, and sometimes he becomes unconscious, but he is
forced to rise again. In this way he is very quickly brought to the presence
of Yamarāja.

Thus he has to pass ninety-nine thousand yojanas within two or three
moments, and then he is at once engaged in the torturous punishment which he
is destined to suffer. One yojana <http://vedabase.net/y/yojana> is
calculated to be eight miles, and he has to pass along a road which is
therefore as much as 792,000 miles. Such a long distance is passed over
within a few moments only. The subtle body is covered by the constables so
that the living entity can pass such a long distance quickly and at the same
time tolerate the suffering. This covering, although material, is of such
fine elements that material scientists cannot discover what the coverings
are made of. To pass 792,000 miles within a few moments seems wonderful to
the modern space travelers. They have so far traveled at a speed of 18,000
miles per hour, but here we see that a criminal passes 792,000 miles within
a few seconds only, although the process is not spiritual but material.

He is placed in the midst of burning pieces of wood, and his limbs are set
on fire. In some cases he is made to eat his own flesh or have it eaten by
others. From this verse through the next three verses the description of
punishment will be narrated. The first description is that the criminal has
to eat his own flesh, burning with fire, or allow others like himself who
are present there to eat. In the last great war, people in concentration
camps sometimes ate their own stool, so there is no wonder that in the
Yamasādana, the abode of Yamarāja, one who had a very enjoyable life eating
others' flesh has to eat his own flesh. His entrails are pulled out by the
hounds and vultures of hell, even though he is still alive to see it, and he
is subjected to torment by serpents, scorpions, gnats and other creatures
that bite him. Next his limbs are lopped off and torn asunder by elephants.
He is hurled down from hilltops, and he is also held captive either in water
or in a cave.

Sometimes unbelievers do not accept these statements of scripture regarding
hell. They disregard such authorized descriptions. Lord
Kapila<http://vedabase.net/k/kapila>therefore confirms them by saying
that these hellish conditions are also
visible on this planet. It is not that they are only on the planet where
Yamarāja lives. On the planet of Yamarāja, the sinful man is given the
chance to practice living in the hellish conditions which he will have to
endure in the next life, and then he is given a chance to take birth on
another planet to continue his hellish life. For example, if a man is to be
punished to remain in hell and eat stool and urine, then first of all he
practices such habits on the planet of Yamarāja, and then he is given a
particular type of body, that of a hog, so that he can eat stool and think
that he is enjoying life. It is stated previously that in any hellish
condition, the conditioned soul thinks he is happy. Otherwise, it would not
be possible for him to suffer hellish life.

He goes alone to the darkest regions of hell after quitting the present
body, and the money he acquired by envying other living entities is the
passage money with which he leaves this world.

When a man earns money by unfair means and maintains his family and himself
with that money, the money is enjoyed by many members of the family, but he
alone goes to hell. A person who enjoys life by earning money or by envying
another's life, and who enjoys with family and friends, will have to enjoy
alone the resultant sinful reactions accrued from such violent and illicit
life. For example, if a man secures some money by killing someone and with
that money maintains his family, those who enjoy the black money earned by
him are also partially responsible and are also sent to hell, but he who is
the leader is especially punished. The result of material enjoyment is that
one takes with him the sinful reaction only, and not the money. The money he
earned is left in this world, and he takes only the reaction.

In this world also, if a person acquires some money by murdering someone,
the family is not hanged, although its members are sinfully contaminated.
But the man who commits the murder and maintains his family is himself
hanged as a murderer. The direct offender is more responsible for sinful
activities than the indirect enjoyer. The great learned scholar Cāṇakya
Paṇḍita <http://vedabase.net/p/pandita> says, therefore, that whatever one
has in his possession had better be spent for the cause of sat, or the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, because one cannot take his possessions with
him. They remain here, and they will be lost. Either we leave the money or
the money leaves us, but we will be separated. The best use of money as long
as it is within our possession is to spend it to acquire
Kṛṣṇa<http://vedabase.net/k/krsna>
consciousness.

*The Final Examination*

This beautiful human form of life should be utilized for a beautiful
ending.Prabhupada used to say that something beautiful should be utilized
for an ugly ending.Everything is tested at the moment of death. Presently,
we see that we are in a beautiful situation-beautiful body, beautiful
environment, beautiful facilities. Now this beautiful situation should
somehow or the other be utilized for a happy ending. The ending should be
happy-that is the idea.If the end is not happy then the whole human life has
been a failure.

*Patitānām Pāvanebhyo Vaiśṇavebhyo Namo Namaḥ!*

Respected devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisance - dandavat praṇāma,

In continuation of our previous article on Chanting Hare Krishna Mahaa
Mantra, we are presenting various methods of Chanting as mentioned in the
scriptures.

Japa Variety :

The Naama-aachaarya Haridaasa Thaakura chanted a daily quota of 300,000 holy
names (192 rounds) without fail. He chanted sixty-four rounds silently in
the mind; sixty-four rounds softly murmering; and sixty-four rounds in a
resounding voice. Hari-bhakti-vilasa describes three bonafide ways to chant
the Hare Krsna mahaa-man-tra:

1. Maanasika-Chanting in the mind without any external sound.

2. Upamsu-Soft chanting that can only be heard by the
saadhaka<https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiWqNg9C6uTW7xH7jYhvOB5rRhsHOHUQgTAT29N3TMmYEC9PLfj4TefXl0hTaYRLXiA6ls41OUGfTNCBnY1QBkMAlmRj1Em7IaeW51ggRKQlpqNNuD-X6IkKXybTKoeuFpp_iqfe2YiWsM/s1600-h/sp+sitting+on+vyasasan+with+beads+scaled.jpg>Srila
Prabhupada, who generally
chanted japa this way, explains the benefits of upamsujapa: "At the present
moment the mind is always disturbed, full of anxieties. You cannot
concentrate. When you chant loudly, at least you hear "Krsna." Your mind is
immediately turned to Krsna. Immediately you associate with Krsna,
forcibly." (SPT 11/10/68)

3. Vaachika-Loud chanting that all can hear, as in kirtana, is a hundred
times more beneficial than upamsu japa. The Chaitanya-Bhaagavata tells how
the caste brahmanas once challenged Haridasa to prove which scripture
sanctioned his loud chanting. Haridasa Thakura replied, "Nowhere in the
scriptures is loud chanting of the holy name condemned. In fact, the
Srimad-Bhagavatam 10.34.17 says: yan-nama grhnann akhildn srotfn atmanam eva
ca sadyah pundti kim bhuyas, 'O Acyuta, anyone who chants Your name
purifies himself along with all who hear his chanting.' In Naradiya Purana,
Prahlada Maharaja says, 'Compared to the person who is attached to chanting
silently, the person who loudly chants the holy name of Hari is one hundred
times better. A silent chanter liberates only himself, but one who chants
loudly liberates himself and any other living entity who hears him.' "
(ct>. ch. 17)

One may alternate between these three forms of chanting in order to improve
concentration, maintain taste, and cultivate attraction in japa. For
variety, try chanting four rounds of manasic-japa. With lips closed and
tongue pressed against the palate (to prevent movement), one should
"mentally pronounce" each word of the maha-mantra. To perform manasic
japa successfully,
which is not easy, one must focus all his attention on Krsna's holy names.
By doing this one becomes aware of how inattentive he can be while chanting
softly or loudly. For example, when one is chanting loudly he may be
"grinding out" the holy names at a feverish pitch, but the mind and heart
may be a million miles from Krsna. But loud chanting can be very beneficial,
especially when the mind slips into monotony or the ghosts of desire surface
from the depths. At times like this a brisk walk in the fresh air, and a
few loud "roof top rounds" will help revive one's interest and attention in
japa. All these forms of chanting please Krsna and purify the heart,
provided they are done with sincerity and devotion. With practice a sadhaka
can choose the chanting style that gives him the best results. Or one may
follow Haridasa Thakura's example of chanting japa in all three ways
(silent, soft, loud). In all devotional endeavors, however, a sadhaka
should always seek the guidance and blessings of his preceptor.

Respected devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisance - dandavat praṇāma,

* This article is also in the continuation to the previous two articles
regarding CHANTING / JAPA / SANKIRTAN of the Hare Krishna Mahaa-Mantra.
According to the authorized scriptures (Shaastra), a person who is chanting
the Holy Names of the Lord, has to save himself from NAAMA-APARAADHA
(offenses while chanting). If he is successful in doing so, there remains no
doubt in his attaining the highest perfection. The following are the 'Ten
Offenses' as mentioned in the scriptures:

*The Ten Offenses to the Holy Name*

quoted in the Chaitanya-Charitaamrta (Adi Lilaa 8.24, purport):*

* *

shri sanatakumaara uvaacha (Sanatkumaar says to Naaradamuni)

sataam nindaa naamnah paramam aparaadham vitanute

yatah khyaatim yaatam kathamu sahate tad vigarihaam

1. To blaspheme the great saintly persons who are preaching the glories of
the Hare Krsna maha-mantra is the worst offense at the lotus feet of the
holy name. The Naama-prabhu, who is identical with Krsna, will never
tolerate such blasphemous activities, even from one who passes as a great
devotee.

shivasya shri-vishnor ya iha guna-naamaadi sakalam

dhiyaa bhinnam pasyet sa khalu hari-naamaahita-karah

2. In this material world the holy name of Vishnu is all-auspicious.
Vishnu's name, form, qualities, and pastimes are all transcendental,
absolute knowledge. Therefore, if one tries to separate the Absolute
Personality of Godhead from His holy name or His transcendental form,
qualities, and pastimes, thinking them material, that is offensive.
Similarly, to think that the names of demigods such as Lord Shiva are as
good as the name of Lord Visnu is also blasphemous.

guror avajnaa

3. It is offensive to consider the spiritual master material and therefore
to envy his exalted position.

shruti-shaastra-nindanam

4. It is offensive to blaspheme the Vedic literature such as the four Vedas
and the Puraanas.

artha-vaadah

5. It is offensive to consider the glories of the holy name exaggerations.

hari-naamni kalpanam

6. It is offensive to consider the holy name of the Lord imaginary.

naamno balaad yasya hi paapa-buddhir

na vidyate tasya yamair hi shuddhih

7. The greatest offense at the lotus feet of the holy name is to think that
since chanting the holy name can counteract all sinful reactions one may
therefore go on sinning and at the same time chant the holy name to
neutralize the reactions. One who thinks in this way cannot be purified by
any program of sense restraint and severe austerities, nor by the various
punishments of Yamaraja.

dharma-vrata-tyaaga-hutaadi-sarva-

shubha-kriyaa-saamyam api pramaadah

8. It is offensive to consider the chanting of the holy name equal to the
performance of ordinary religious ceremonies or fire sacrifices, the
observance of austere vows, or the practice of renunciation, all of which
are materialistic auspicious activities.

ashraddadhaane vimukhe 'py ashrnvati

yas chopadesah shiva-naamaaparaadhah

9. It is an offense to preach the glories of the holy name to those
unwilling to hear, to atheists, or to those who have no faith in chanting
the holy name.

shrutvaapi naama-mahaatmyam yah priti-rahito 'dhamah

aham-mamaadi-paramo naamni so 'py aparaadha-krt

10. If a person has heard the glories of the transcendental holy name of the
Lord but nevertheless continues in the materialistic concept of life,
thinking, "I am this body and everything belonging to this body is
mine,"and if he thus shows no respect or love for the chanting of the
holy name,
that is an offense.

api pramaadah

It is also an offense to be inattentive while chanting.

Try to withdraw your mind from the objects of the senses, exclusively
concentrate on the sounds of the mantra, meditate on the meaning of the
mantra, and remain undisturbed by any other thoughts or external situations.
Through devoted concentration on the syllables of the holy name, you will
realize step-by-step the Lord's form, qualities, and pastimes.

Every devotee who claims to be a Vaishnava must carefully guard against
these ten offenses in order to quickly achieve the desired success,
Krsna-Prema.

aparaadha-vimukto hi naamni japtam sadaachaara

naamnaiva tava devarshe sarvam setsyati naanyatah

"Sanatkumaara said, "O Devarshi Naarada, The proper way to chant the holy
name is to always avoid the ten offenses. There is no need for any other
process of spiritual elevation other than chanting the holy name, for the
holy name alone can award one the highest perfection."

Therefore, kindly avoid these offenses and please always keep chanting the
Mahaa-Mantra to make your life sublime.

*Patitānām Pāvanebhyo Vaiśṇavebhyo Namo Namaḥ!*

Respected devotees,
Please accept our humble obeisance - dandavat praṇāma,

CONCLUDING PURUSHOTTAMA MAAS VRATA

Time and day:

It has been concluded the time for closing the Purushottam maas vrata would
be as follows:

The vrata should be concluded on Amaavasyaa (new moon) day which is
13th/14th May, before the Amaavasyaa finishes. After observing the regular
vows that one has been specially following for Purushottma month for that
particular day one has to close the Vrata.

It was recommended by HG Jananivaas Prabhu that fast should be broken on
13th evening before 5.00 pm.

However, Amavasya finishes differently for each time zone. The timing for
India in general is :
May 14, 2010 – Amaavasyaa (The Amaavasi begins at 07:07 AM on May 13 and
ends at 06:34 AM on May 14.) Therefore May 13 is marked as Darsha Amavasya
in some calendars.

Devotees outside India kindly check with your local temple authorities or
verify in the Vaishnava calendar:

*OR*

*Install Vaishnava Calendar in your PC:*

Concluding the vrata

1. After taking bath, worship Radha-Krishna Deities or Picture, and chant
this mantra: "O Supreme Lord, O Sanatana, O Purusottama, O Lord Hari ! I
offer my obeisances unto you. May you and your beloved Radhika, please
accept my offerings. I offer my repeated obeisance's unto Radha-Krishna, who
wears effulgent yellow garments on His beautiful body."

2. Offer pushpaanjali and obeisance's to Radha-Krishna Deities or Picture.

3. Feed and give charity to 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 brahmanas to your best ability
(e.g., new clothes, two pairs of shoes, Laksmi). The best charity is to give
a Srimad Bhagavatam to a qualified grhastha vaisnava brahmana. This act will
deliver all your ancestors to spiritual world and the association of Lord
Purusottama !

**SPECIAL ACTIONS FOR CONCLUDING THE VRATA**

1. If you ate fruits, ghee, rice, wheat etc, donate the same to brahmanas.

2. If you slept on the floor, give a bed and pillows to a brahmana.

3. If you ate on a leaf plate, feed brahmanas with ghee and sugar.

4. If you didn't cut nails or hair, donate a mirror to a brahmana.

5. If you offered ghee lamps, give new lamps and pots to a brahmana.

6.* If you broke any rules or regulations during Purusottama vrata, feed
different sweet juices to brahmanas.

7. Lord Siva says that the best charity is: "Fill a bell metal pot with
thirty maalpuaas, bind the pot with seven new threads and give to a worthy
brahmana".

Hari-bhakti-vilasa (Vol 4, Vs 437): "During Purusottama month, one should
remember Lord Krsna and then donate thirty three milk cakes cooked in ghee
[maalpuaas] to grhastha brahmanas, who are well versed in shaastras. Failing
to do so, one loses all the piety he accumulated in the previous year."

Gopal Krishna Swami is received with honor.

The 29th National Sanatan Dharma Mahasamelan was held on 17th of April at
the FICCI Auditorium, New Delhi. The meeting was organized by Sri Ramakant
Goswami, Vice Chairman, Delhi Jal Board and General Secretary for the All
India Sanatan Dharma Pratinidhi Samelan.

Gopal Krishna Swami was invited to represent ISKCON and bless the meetings.
Meera Kumar, Lok Sabha Speaker of India, and Shela Dixit, Chief Minister,
New Delhi, honored him by offering flower garlands and a kalash (sacred
water pot). They praised ISKCON for its activities around the world,
especially glorifying the preaching activities in Russia.

Gopal Krishna Swami gave a blessing speech and spoke on how the current
global scenario is very gloomy and how the water problem tops the list.
Quoting the verse "Annad bhavanti bhutani" from the third chapter of the
Bhagavad Gita, he said water comes from rain and rain comes from sacrifice,
and the sacrifice for this age is the chanting the holy names of God.

He also elaborated on the work being done by ISKCON to spread the message of
Bhagavad Gita all over the world, proudly displaying a Chinese edition of
Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

Gopal Krishna Swami then presented each of the dignitaries with a copy of
Bhagavad Gita As It Is and a picture of Krishna with his mother, Yasoda.
Among the recipients was Several notable personalities was R.S. Rana,
Ambassador of Nepal.

The four hour meeting ended with the distribution of nearly a thousand
copies each of the English Bhagavad Gita As It Is and the Hindi Back to
Godhead magazine to all the members of the audience.
