Hare Krishna! Please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila
Prabhupada and Srila Gurudev!
On Feb 2nd 2012, we observed the Tirobhava of our beloved spiritual master
H H Srila Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj. We pray to Supreme Lord that we be
attracted all the time, only to one thing, that is the divine instructions
of our spiritual master so that we can become completely obedient to him.
Srila Narottama das thakura sings
*guru-mukha-padma-vaakya / cittete koriyaa aikya,
aar naa koriha mane aashaa *
"*Make the teachings from the lotus mouth of the spiritual master one with
your heart, and do not desire anything else*."
At the end of Dvaapar Yuga, when Lord Krishna departed to Goloka
Vrindavana, Arjuna took the same resolution out of deep feelings of
separation from Krishna, who was not only his dear friend and Supreme Lord,
but was also his beloved spiritual master. In Srimad Bhagavatam verse
1.15.27 he says,
*desha-kaalaartha-yuktaani / hrt-taapopashamaani ca
haranti smaratash cittam / govindaabhihitaani me *
"*Now I am attracted to those instructions imparted to me by the
Personality of Godhead [Govinda] because they are impregnated with
instructions for relieving the burning heart in all circumstances of time
and space*."
This verse has a subtle, but most important formula for success in
devotional service, especially when we are not able to associate with
spiritual master. Srila Prabhupada says in purport of this verse that
"*Bhagavad-Gita,
or any authentic scriptural sound representation of the Lord, is also the
incarnation of the Lord. There is no difference between the sound
representation of the Lord and the Lord Himself. One can derive the same
benefit from the Bhagavad-Gita as Arjuna did in the personal presence of
the Lord*." The same is true for spiritual Master. The spiritual master's
vani, is nondifferent from himself. Everyone may not get the personal
association with spiritual master. But we know that associating with his
instruction is non-different from his personal association. When spiritual
master is physically present in front of our eyes, we are naturally
attracted to him and obedience is automatic. But when he is not physically
with us, because of our ignorance and bodily conception, we tend to become
disobedient. This verse shows us the way out of this. Like Arjuna, our sole
attraction must be towards Guru's divine instructions. The word "now" in
the translation is very important. *"Now" means "Not later", "No
procrastination". Let us not take this resolution tomorrow or later. Now,
Now and Now, we must be attracted to these divine spiritual instructions of
our spiritual master*. And this attraction must be '*desha kaalaartha
yuktaani*' which means it must persist in all the *desha* (all locations)
and *kaala* (all times).
Maharaj says, "*Obedience is greatest remembrance of Krishna*." Being
obedient means to dovetail our goals, desires, and our activities in line
with his divine instructions. The most desirable goal for us is to fulfill
the goals set by our spiritual master. The most beautiful desire for us is
to serve Maharaj by being obedient to his instructions. Our activities, our
behavior must be according to Maharaj's liking. Spiritual master is the
mercy incarnation of Lord. The mercy comes to us in the form of his divine
instructions. The way to receive his mercy as his disciples is to have one
pointed attraction to his divine instructions. Unless we have attraction,
we cannot have attention to his instructions. Attraction and attention
would bring obedience and remembrance. Sri Naradji's success in devotional
service is well known to all of us. He has disclosed his success formula in
verse Srimad Bhagavatam verse 1.5.29.
*tasyaivam me 'nuraktasya / prashritasya hatainasah
shraddadhaanasya baalasya / daantasyaanucarasya ca *
"*I was very much attached to those sages. I was gentle in behavior, and
all my sins were eradicated in their service. In my heart I had strong
faith in them. I had subjugated the senses, and I was strictly following
them with body and mind*."
Srila Prabhupada says in purport that, "*A neophyte devotee must faithfully
serve the pure devotee, and he should be very much obedient and strictly
follow the instructions. These are the signs of a devotee who is determined
to achieve success even in the existing duration of life*." So let us
resolve that we will
1. be attracted and attached to the instructions of the spiritual master - (
*anuraktasya*)
2. be faithful to him - (*shraddadhaanasya*)
3. subjugate all other attractions of our material senses - (*daantasya*)
4. be obedient - *prashritasya*
5. strictly follow his instructions with our body as well as mind - (*
anucarasya*)
and this we should do at all places and times - (*desa-kaalaartha-yuktaani*).
This will ensure constant remembrance of Supreme Lord (*smaratash cittam*)
which will take us all to Krishna's abode where we can personally associate
with Srila Gurudev, Srila Prabhupada and Supreme Lord Krishna, and serve
Them with all our hearts.
