History and Iconography
Early representations
The earliest known list of the Trumps (Sermones de Ludo Cum Aliis)
calls this card La Stella (The Star). The Visconti-Sforza Tarot quite
simply depicts a woman who, with an unmoved expression, looks at a
large, eight-pointed star held in her left hand. Her red cloak is
adorned with golden stars and her long, blue dress with a motif of
horizontal rays on top of vertical rays.
The Rosenwald Sheet keeps things even more straightforward, only
showing an eight-pointed star with a motif at the top and bottom of
the card. On the Cary Sheet, however, the image is much more
elaborate: the card portrays a nude figure who pours water from two
large jugs into a flowing stream in which the tail of at least one
fish is visible. The figure has long hair and a tattoo of a star on
his/her right shoulder. A large, eight-pointed star shines brightly in
the sky and is surrounded by four smaller stars. Iconographically, the
card particularly brings to mind depictions of Aquarius.
In the Tarot de Marseille, L'Étoile (The Star) shows a nude woman who
pours water from a vase in her left hand into a pond, and water from a
vase in her right hand onto the ground. For some reason, her
bellybutton is accentuated in both the Noblet and the Dodal. In the
background two trees or bushes can be seen, usually with the
silhouette of a bird. A large star shines in the sky, surrounded by
six smaller stars. The four elements seem to be present here: earth
(the ground and sand), air (the sky and bird), fire (the stars) and
water.
20th-century representations
The Star in the Waite-Smith Tarot is more or less the same as in the
Tarot de Marseille. A nude woman is again shown pouring water in a
pond and on the earth; to stress this balance, she now has one foot in
the water and the other on solid ground (as did the archangel on the
Temperance card in the same deck). The profile of a bird is also seen
sitting on a tree, this time resembling an ibis. An eight-pointed star
shines brightly in the sky as well, surrounded by seven smaller stars.
Suggested Divinatory Meanings
Stars shine brightly in the nightly sky and offer guidance and
orientation for those who feel lost; as a result, this card especially
signifies spiritual renewal, harmony, hope for the future, and
potential and possibilities. Carole Sédillot writes in Ombres et
Lumières du Tarot: "One needs only to look up to the infinite to
perceive her [The Star] and break through the darkness, in order to
connect with the divine."

The Star - Wellness for Body and Soul
In brief:
You feel open-hearted, creative, free from all bonds and this is your
day. Lost in pleasure you bathe in the Waters of Life, enjoying the
feeling of Life flowing around you. It is high time for you to look
after yourself, spoil yourself and give body and soul a chance to
recuperate. Treat yourself to the magic of existence.
I love the way the water plays gently over my body and keeps my soul
safe in a warm and silky cocoon. I splash about in the fountain of
youth and watch how the Waters of Life flow and flow, ever new, ever
sweet. They are Heaven's gift; the flowers are my playmates and the
angels sing their songs to me.

The Star
Whenever all hope seems lost, it will reappear to prove that you have
really lost nothing, except perhaps your sight of the path to
enlightenment. And in the absence of that sight, the Star will light
your way. Its light is not a blinding flash like the lightning bolt of
the Tower, but a soft radiating glow that warms and comforts, rather
than burning and destroying. You must remember that both of these
energies ultimately come from the same place in the sky - from Heaven.
After the light of the Tower destroys the false path you were
following, the kinder and gentler light of the Star will lead you back
to the right path.
In terms of symbolism this card is similar to Temperance; there is a
figure by a pool with two cups. But while the contents of the Cups
were mixed with each other in Temperance, here they are mixed with the
waters of the eternal spirit of the Divine. When you cannot help
yourself, the Star tells you to look to the heavens for guidance. Or,
more appropriately, look to the spark of divinity that lies within
yourself that you could not see or acknowledge before. Each of us has
a little piece of the Star deep inside, waiting to cast its light into
the world to light the way. This is what Crowley meant when he
affirmed that "every man and every woman is a star."
The Star is a card of faith, both in your own power, and in powers
greater than your own. When the Tower sweeps away all the negativity
in your life, you once again need something to fill the void, and
faith is a good place to start. What exactly is faith? It could be
said that faith is a conscious belief in an unconscious experience, of
which we may not be directly aware, but of which we can still feel the
effects. This definition fits both belief in a deity and belief in
your own abilities. Having faith in any power will allow that power to
manifest in your life. Believing that something will happen is as sure
a way as any to make it happen.
There is a lot of meditative imagery on almost all renditions of the
Star, though the most interesting symbol on the Rider-Waite version of
the card is the pool of water at the center of the scene. On some
decks the naked woman is standing in the pool, but in the Rider-Waite
version she kneels beside it. Notice that her right foot rests on the
water but does not break the surface. Once faith is placed in its
power, the pool of the subconscious becomes able to support the
conscious mind. The miraculous ability to walk on water is
symbolically translated here into the ability to trust in another
power, whether in the heavens or in yourself. Once that trust is
achieved, anything is possible.
There are few cards more positive than the Star, because when it
appears in your life it is nothing less than a beacon of hope and
inspiration. In times of darkness it shows that there is a way out,
and tells you not to worry, for illumination and freedom are at hand.
All you need is something in which to place your faith. So trust in
yourself, and in whatever powers you believe control the universe, to
help you through difficult times. Let the infinite energy of the Star
warm you and rejuvenate your soul, to provide the strength and the
clarity of purpose you need to continue on your journey.
It is important to keep in mind, however, that the Star is never a
card that shows the final solution to any problem. It simply shows the
hope and faith to get to wherever you're going; without hope we can
accomplish nothing, but hope is only a beginning. Now that you have
been inspired, you still have much work to do in order to bring your
vision into manifestation. You must combine the solidity of material
existence with the waters of your emotions and of your spirit. This is
a time when miracles can happen, so kick off your shoes and wade into
the pool, confident that the water will support you until you reach
the other side.

The Star
The Star (or Daughter of the Firmament) is numbered seventeen and is
probably the most optimistic and beautiful card in the deck. A
beautiful young woman, often naked, is depicted pouring water from a
jug into the ground or into a pool by her feet. There are stars in the
sky above her.
Stars have long been seen as symbols of hope, regeneration, vision and
new life. When this card appears, you know somehow that life is just
about to become easier and brighter. Life's forces combine to assist
rather than hinder.
Here is the truth about our power - we can join the solid earth of
material existence with the flowing waters of spirit and create within
ourselves a Universe. We have removed self-criticism and concentrated
instead on our skills and strengths. When we regard ourselves with
love, humour, tenderness and sympathy, we access the God and Goddess
within and we are transformed.
"Every man and woman is a star" A. Crowley
Working with The Star
This card is the best one in the entire deck, in my opinion. It marks
a point where fortune smiles upon us, lighting up our dreams, hopes
and wishes with the promise of fulfilment and manifestation.
The first time I drew this card on the 'Working with....' run it
followed the 9 of Cups (the Wish card) and the Princess of Cups
(dancer of dreams) and was the 57th card I had written a commentary
on. Somehow there was no better time the Star could possibly have come
up for the first time.......
This card always marks a turning point, where positive energy flows
into life in a swift-running stream. All that is left for us to do is
to open ourselves to the remarkable powers which are always present
when this card appears.
Times like this one make miracles in life. We can attune with the
powers of the Universe more easily now than at most other times. We
can reach out and touch whatever it is that we call God or Goddess,
and welcome their presence and might in our lives.
On a day ruled by this card, dream the best way you know how to....and
realise that your dreams stand a greater chance of coming true than at
any other time. Wish your wishes ....and fill them up with as much
hope and light as you can possibly manage.
Then be glad to be alive on a day like this.
Affirmation: I can create anything I need.

THE STAR 17
The Star is represented by the number 17 or 8 – hope and prosperity of
the spiritual kind. Although the difficulties will be known, the
lessons of hope, faith, and charity will prevail.
The zodiac sign that represents the Star is Aquarius
The Pictorial Key to the Tarot by Arthur Edward Waite (1911)
Part I: The Veil and its Symbols
17. The Star, Dog-Star, or Sirius, also called fantastically the Star
of the Magi. Grouped about it are seven minor luminaries, and beneath
it is a naked female figure, with her left knee upon the earth and her
right foot upon the water. She is in the act of pouring fluids from
two vessels. A bird is perched on a tree near her; for this a
butterfly on a rose has been substituted in some later cards. So also
the Star has been called that of Hope. This is one of the cards which
Court de Gebelin describes as wholly Egyptian-that is to say, in his
own reverie.
Part II: The Doctrine Behind the Veil
A great, radiant star of eight rays, surrounded by seven lesser stars,
also of eight rays. The female figure in the foreground is entirely
naked. Her left knee is on the land and her right foot upon the water.
She pours Water of Life from two great ewers, irrigating sea and land.
Behind her is rising ground and on the right a shrub or tree, whereon
a bird alights. The figure expresses eternal youth and beauty. The
star is lâ'toile flamboyante, which appears in Masonic symbolism, but
has been confused therein. That which the figure communicates to the
living scene is the substance of the heavens and the elements. It has
been said truly that the mottoes of this card are "Waters of Life
freely" and "Gifts of the Spirit."
The summary of several tawdry explanations says that it is a card of
hope. On other planes it has been certified as immortality and
interior light. For the majority of prepared minds, the figure will
appear as the type of Truth unveiled, glorious in undying beauty,
pouring on the waters of the soul some part and measure of her
priceless possession. But she is in reality the Great Mother in the
Kabalistic Sephira Binah, which is supernal Understanding, who
communicates to the Sephiroth that are below in the measure that they
can receive her influx.

On This Day:
Tuesday February 7, 2012
This is the 38th day of the year, with 328 days remaining in 2012.
Fact of the Day: presidents and CEOs
There is aa legal difference and a functional difference between a
president and CEO of a company. Legally, each state requires
corporations to have presidents. Most also require two to three other
officers, such as vice president, secretary and treasurer, each of
which has specific duties. Legally, the president of a corporation is
the head of the corporation for corporate registration purposes. There
is no uniform legal definition for CEO. Functionally, the differences
between Presidents and CEOs vary in different corporations. Many
smaller corporations do not have CEOs; the president or other managers
perform the management functions of the CEO. CEOs are generally seen
in larger corporations. The CEO manages day-to-day operations while
the President does long-range planning. It is the same distinction
that is made in the military between strategy (the president) and
tactics (the CEO), or planning what to do versus figuring out how to
do it and getting it done. Many corpor ations have their own
definitions for what each person does. There may be a powerful CEO and
a figurehead President or a President who manages many day-to-day
operations and a CEO who only takes care of manufacturing. There are
no uniform definitions other than the legal one for the president as
the head corporate officer. You will also see many times these days
that one person is given both titles.
